1. Schools should teach children to cooperate. Meanwhile, others believe that
children should learn to compete. Discuss?
The 21th
century ,which brings along chances and challenges on all side of society, has been posting new
trends in education and urging educators to find proper approaches in order to enhance students’
development. Whether students should be encouraged to cooperate or compete is a matter of controversy.
While some people claim that the competing fosters students to work independently and outperform
themselves; others vote for cooperation. I am convinced by the latter for the following reasons.
Those who embrace competing reckon that it motivates students to work hard and achieve success on
their own feet. This may seem sound since working alone ,individuals have to do to everything without
calling assistance from others and thus, they come to know their strength and weakness .Paradoxically,
students, when facing obstacles, usually have a bad habit of giving up instead of trying their best. Even if
they win over people or reach remarkable achievement, they possibly become self-centered and
underestimate others. Besides, some also play unfair or revenge their competitors owing to being ashamed
of losing. Therefore, competing gives rise to aggressiveness among students.
As far as cooperation is concerned, it proves to be an effective way to nurture crucial living skills such as
problem-solving, responsibility-sharing, communication skills. Only after joining in teamwork do
students learn how to listen and respect others’ view as well as raise their own voice and sharpen their
thinking. As a result of gathering various ideas, individuals enrich their knowledge and become open-
minded. Moreover, they feel the inspiration to keep pace with their teammates. At the same time, thanks
to sharing tasks, workload is reduced and time is saved for outdoor activities. Lastly, working in groups
brings new friends and social relationships, which will open more career opportunities for students in the
future. Even looking at a bigger picture, it is believed that by dint of cooperation, countries become more
united and active when facing global issues like environmental pollution, economic depression and
others.
In brief, apart from encouraging students to fairly take part in competitive tasks, teachers had better give
favorable conditions for them to share and work together when solving problems.
