3. Winston Churcill (1874-1965)
Prime Minister and Minister of Defence during the Second
World War. Especially famous for his speeches on the radio
which gave British people strong hope and determination in
the war.

4. Isambard Brunel (1806-59)
English civil engineer who built bridges, dockyards, and
tunnels. He was the creator of the Great Western Railway, and
designer of numerous significant ships, tunnels and bridges
His designs revolutionized public transport and modern
engineering.

5. Diana , Princess of Wales (1961-97)
She was the former wife of Prince Charles. She was
famous for her charity works and for her honest and
open conversations with the press. She died in a car
accident in Paris in 1997 while trying to escape from
photographers.

6. Charles Darwin (1809-82)
Scientist who wrote about the theory of evolution. He
established that all the species descend from common
ancestors and proposed that the pattern of evolution
resulted from a process called natural selection.

7. William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
A poet and playwright, often described as the greatest
writer in English language. His plays are especially
admired for their poetic language and dramatic
technique. He wrote about thirty eight plays in total.

8. Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727)
Scientist and Mathematician who described the gravity
and the laws of motion. He developed the principles of
modern physics.

9. John Lennon (1940-80)
A singer and guitar player with the Beatles. He and
Paul McCartney wrote most of their songs. He was a
peace campaigner. He was murdered in New York in
1980.

10. Elizabeth I (1533-1603)
She was also called the Virgin Queen. Elizabeth reign was
famous for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights
such as Shakespeare. She stayed on the throne for forty-five
years and brought to the country stability and a sense of
national identity.

11. Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)
Admiral famous for his service in the Royal Navy,
paricularly during Napoleonic Wars. His leadership,
superb strategy, and unconventional tactics resulted in
a number of decisive naval victories.
12. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658)
Military and political leader. He was a strong advocate
to the English Reformation and the English church’s
break with the papacy in Rome. The Parliament
declared the supremacy over the Church of England
in 1534. He created a Republican England.

British explorer, navigator, and cartographer. He was
the first to map Newfoundland.

14. Alfred the Great (reigned 871-879)
He was the first King of the West Saxon. Most of his
reforms can be seen in the basis of the creation of
England.

15. Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955)
During World War I he served in the Army Medical
Corps. While he was studying influenza, he
discovered penicillin. It would alter forever the
treatment of bacterial infections.
