It is proposed that the film will be of 0 to 2 Minutes duration, and that it will
be filmed at the following locations:
This film will include the following conventions of thriller films, Low key
lighting is a convention we will use when we film, because this can be used
to show mystery, yet it also is used for foreshadowing bad events.
Suspense can be created through the sounds that we use, deep dark
music can represent bad events. We will also be including shots of
overcast weather, used for foreshadowing purposes, weather such as
overcast dark and grey lighting, which will give the film an aesthetically
interesting angle. In which can create a suspenseful yet meaningful
opening sequence for the audience.
Here are some locations (with pictures) that we have chosen to film at:
2. Shack,
This is the place we have selected as it can be dark and suspicious, this
location can help us conform with the thriller genre, in terms of mystery and
the fact that the location is isolated, so it heightens the audience
expectation and suspense of the film so that Brad the man who has been
withdrawn from society cannot contact any other persons, and this creates
a dilemma for the audience because they do not know what will happen to
him.
3. After watching Shutter Island and The Dark Knight Rises thriller films/thriller
openings I have been influenced by strong symbolism and foreshadowing
that create a strong grounding in which the audience will be hooked by.
After seeing the Shutter Island opening with an opening sequence not
containing much color, but only grey skies and dark rooms. This sets the
scene as a more serious and intense movie. The isolation factor of both
The Dark Knight Rises and Shutter Island is very effective because it tells
the audience that the characters are away from society, away from any
help.
Problems encountered: The limitations of our thriller film is that we only
have certain areas In Auckland where we have found where we can shoot,
and one of our main sequence characters will be away for half of the time
we have available for filming.
……………………………………………………………………….
The film will include a strong introduction where the audience is faced with
this man who his a hostage but is heavily confused. The lighting will be
bright to show that he is completely distorted and that he has been in the
bag for a prolonged period of time. with two henchmen threatening him.
(1) Character names and their motivations/representation in the film:
Main characters name is brad. He has been taken hostage for an
unknown reason. Then there are the two henchmen who have taken
him, their motivation is to find out what his identity is, and they also
have a usb in which they are questioning him about
(2) Ideology
The ideas within the film are ideas of kidnapping, and distortedness. This is seen in
the title ‘Withdrawn’ This is implying that his mind has been taken away from him
and he has to regain his own focus, whilst being kidnapped.
4. (3) Mood and Tone:
Dark mood and tone, however no filters. The mood is also seen as scary and is in
anticipation for what is going to happen. This tone will be created through thr low
key lighting that we will be
(4) Camera Shots, camera movement/lighting/angles, lighting:
(5) Themes and motifs:
Themes of capture and captivity, where a person is getting held against his
will. The theme of darkness to represent the fact that it is a very evil thing to
do, capturing someone and holding him or her against their will. The theme
of confusion, where brad does not understand what is happening and
therefore the audience does not understand either. Mystery is a theme that
we are using to conform to the thriller genre, with our interrogating and
torturing sequence; we are using mystery in order to heighten the
audience’s expectations.
(6) Narrative
The narrative is not too extensive, however is based upon the theme of a kidnap.
There is a man called Brad who has been taken by two men. Brad is being
interrogated about his own identity, however it does not go into much detail about
his identity and therefor is left as a mystery in which conforms to the genre. Then
we have the bag taken off brads head, this then shows him as distorted, because he
does not know what is happening to him, or he does no know where he is. Then the
henchmen bring out a usb that Brad was in possession of, It is unknown to the
viewer what is on the usb, then to create again a sense of mystery
(6) Symbolism:
Symbols and ideology of no escape can be seen with shots of brad being tired up,
and there will be shots through metal bars which symbolize that he is stuck and
well guarded, much like a prison. The setting of the shack symbolizes that Brad is
isolated and therefore goes with the themes of the film and the title ‘Withdrawn, it
suggests that the prisoner is stuck in one location, and therefore heightens the
audiences expectation of the film, because the prisoner cannot contact any help
whilst he is in the shack.
(7) Sound and music:
Dark music will be used in the opening to enhance the experience in the
opening sequence. This will include dark low music with sudden tings of
sound to show the creepiness of the men who have kidnapped the main
5. character brad. This therefore enhances the audiences expectation of the
openingm
Summery:
BEGINNING:
The man is found in a dark shack, with a black bag over his head (he is being
kidnapped). The bag is then taken off his head and brad is completely
disorientated, this is heard through the high pitch sounds in which surround his
mind, he does no know what is going on, and does not know the people who have
captured him, and tied him to the chair. He is released from the bag and Brad is
then completely distorted, the camera is shown out of focus
THE CONFLICT/TENSION IN THE TRAILER:
There is conflict and tension between the kidnappers and the kidnapped person,
they are interrogating him strongly to get answers. There is questioning going on
about the black lighter, in which brad has no idea of what it is, this is creating
tension between the henchmen and brad, then one of the henchmen breaks out in
physical contact, by punching him in the stomach multiple times. This symbolizes
that he is weak and cannot do much to help himself in this position
Treatment update: what we decided to change from our original treatment in
order to suit our conditions, and enhance our film: We decided to only shoot
at one location. This location was at the factory. We decided to do this
because our credit sequence will be about 45 seconds long, and this only
leaves us with around 1 minute and 15 seconds for filming our sequence.
So we as a team decided to develop our film in depth at one location, rather
than have multiple different shots in which we cannot go into depth with.
We decided to put a dark blue/dark filter over our footage to create a sense
of coldness and isolation to enhance the viewers experience when
watching our film. We decided to change the henchmen having masks
because it allows us to give the henchmen emotions to enhance the film.
We are not using music for our sequence, however just a dark score and
mysterious score, with a ting sound to conform to the thriller genre as being
slightly crazy, in which our film is, this is because kidnapping someone is
only what a crazy person would do and they do not respect the
consequences of it. We changed our location to a factory over a shack, this
is because it enhances our narrative, because the audience may expect
6. that the henchmen are working for someone who may be a mob boss or
along the lines of that because they own a factory, this then adds to the
mystery of the film.
7. that the henchmen are working for someone who may be a mob boss or
along the lines of that because they own a factory, this then adds to the
