After logging in to Moodle, click on the course in which you want to create a Journal assignment in.
In this case, click on Demo Course.

Then click on the Turn editing on button at the top right corner to switch to the editing mode.

After turning on the editing mode, under Topic outline (or Weekly outline), choose a topic (or week)
in which you want to create a Journal assignment. In this case, we choose Topic 2.

Click on Add an activity to open the pull-down menu.

Select Journal from the menu.

You must input a name for the Journal assignment into the Journal name field.

In this case, we type in “Assignment 1 Lesson Plan”.

You are then required to input text into the Journal question box.

For example, you could write something about the assignment, such as instructions or criteria, etc.
In this case, we type in “Write a brief journal entry that reflects on your lesson plan.”

You can set the duration of the journal's availability to students.
Click on the pull-down menu next to Days available to see the options.

By default, Always open is set, allowing students to write and submit their journals at any time without a due date.
Here in this case, we choose Always open.

You can select a grade scale or a maximum mark (up to 100) for the journal.

By default, No grade is set. Click on the Grade field to change it.

Click on the Save and return to course button at the bottom of the page to finish.

You can see that a Journal assignment, named Assignment 1 Lesson Plan has been successfully created in Topic 2.

Characteristics of Journal assignment in Moodle:
• Every student has their own journal
• Each journal is private between student and teacher
• Journal can be viewed and edited by the journal owner only
• Journal can be viewed but cannot be edited by teacher
• Journal can be graded and commented by teacher
• Grade and feedback can be viewed by the journal owner only
