2. Korean drama or K-dramas are
television dramas (Hangul: 드라마;
RR: deurama) in the Korean
language, made in South Korea.
Korean dramas are popular
worldwide, partially due to the
spread of Korean popular culture
(the "Korean Wave"), and are
available through streaming
services that offer multiple language
subtitles. They have received
adaptations throughout the world,
and have had a cultural impact on
other countries.
3. Filipino drama
Philippine television drama, also known
as teleserye, Filipino telenovelas or P-
drama, is a form of melodramatic
serialized fiction in television in the
Philippines. Teleserye is rooted from two
words: "tele," which is short for
"television," and "serye," a Tagalog term
for "series" and "drama" for drama.
4. Reasons why korean dramas are popular
among filipinos
1. Theme - Korean dramas contain family-friendly themes such as
romance, friendship, history, and family values. All values that Filipino
viewers share. These themes make it easier to watch Korean dramas
as a family. While there are some action-themed series such as City
Hunter, they only show a small degree of violence.
2. Storyline - The storylines of Korean dramas are not as easy to predict
as local dramas and the pacing of the plot is much faster compared to
local dramas. The Korean way of story-telling is new to Filipino viewers.
3. Characterization - It has to be said – Korean stars are attractive.
Whether on-cam or off-cam, they look cute, especially combined with
their sense of fashion. They make Korea’s fashion shine beautifully on-
screen.
5. Let's Talk Filipino: F-Dramas!
1. Make-up - I recently watched a snippet of a new F- Drama called A Love to
Last and let me tell you, I had to look away at one point because the male
lead’s under eye was blinding. I get that aging is – for some – a drag but
packing on concealer won’t hide your age, if anything, it will bring more
attention to the fact.
2. The effects and sound - They have to work on background sounds: wind,
waves, rain, and other nature sounds that can't be controlled. I came to hear
the actors speak not the ocean sounds; come on it not as if they are
YouTube vloggers with a Canon PowerShot G7 on a windy day at the
beach.
• Storyline needs variety - Popular F-Drama synopsis: super rich person loves dirt-
poor person, poor orphan is actually rich, or husband has a mistress. I remember 3
years straight from 2014-2016 you couldn’t even turn on the TV without watching
a Filipino man cheating on his wife, in fact, after one ends another begins.
7. • Language This one's a bit obvious. So we'll look at it a bit
differently. Both countries are in Asia. Meaning both are
actually Asian Dramas. Now, in the Philippines, Dramas also
speak Tagalog and English at times. Same goes for Kdramas.
Some Kdramas have English words in them.
• Clothing looks and fashion - Looks in the Philippines and
fashion there are quite different compared to Korean looks
and fashion.
8. • First Snow - Like I mentioned in my last blog,
First snows are quite significant and important in
Kdramas. Well... in Pdramas, that's not quite the
case. The Philippines is quite near the equator
making it a LOT hotter than it is in South Korea.
It does rain there and get sunny, but never snow.
If we ever do see snow, we'll start acting
something similar to this:
9. • Korean-Dramas hit the Philippines in a blink
of an eye that began after some international
dramas (Mexicans, Taiwanese, Chinese and
Japanese Dramas). For how many years,
Pinoy Dramas conquered the primetime slot
in the Philippine Television. And now, popular
Korean Dramas are the talk of the town. I
wonder why, in the present generation, teens
and pa-teens prefers or watches more
Korean dramas than Pinoy dramas?
10. • Korean Dramas and Filipino Dramas somehow have the
same repetitive characteristics. Actually, dramas all over the
world are also repetitive. It’s either a mash-up of different
plots used in the past (that they claim makes it different) or
the same thing as before, but better acting.
• When it comes to korean dramas, its dramas become a hit
merely because of the actors and how they act. I mean come
on, most girls here in the Philippines watched Boys over
Flowers because, obviously, of the boys (guilty as charged, I
get kilig over Lee Minho and Kim Bum). I watched the whole
thing because of them but I have side-comments when it
comes to how corny or cheesey the story went. I just sticked
to it for the sake of seeing their faces and the kilig moments.
11. • On the other hand, Filipino dramas get a hit once in
a blue moon. Let’s be honest, in channel 7 what are
the real dramas that captured people’s attention,
• in Filipino dramas, the most shitty thing about it is
they use the same actors all over again. Why stick
to an actor/actress who has the face but acts very
lousy? There are no difference it’s just a recycle of
previous dramas. For the Filipino dramas, I wish
they could be more inventive and not repetitive of
the actors and plots. But yeah, in reality korean
dramas overshadow Filipino dramas and that’s sad,
for me.
