Copyright
1. The sprite graphics I produce will be copyrighted as well as the graphics that will appear on the
poster. This means that you cannot use the graphics that I produce without my permission. You can’t
reproduce my work, produce my work and slightly modify it or take the graphics that I let you use for
the poster and sprites and use them in another medium, like publicly displaying the images without
my permission. These are all infringements of copyright terms. All infringements of this law will lead
to legal action. The same goes for any images that you use; I will not be able to copy them for my
own use. Games are thoroughly checked during the copyright process as they are often copied and
ripped off. The disks are copied and sold off cheaply without the knowledge of the game developer,
this is a breach of copyright and people get away without daily. The name of the game and all linked
logos are under copyright as well.
Confidentiality is a law within business this means that you aren’t allowed to speak to anyone about
the graphics used within the game or for any other purpose such as posters until the game has been
released and the posters distributed and in public view. I will keep the product confidential and not
tell anyone that isn’t involved directly with the product what it is or anything about it. I will also keep
all costs linked to the product confidential. This includes initial costs for the product as well as costs
for distribution.
All features of the game will be kept confidential as well as story lines and vehicles/weapons that will
appear within the game. I will not release any information on news of the product or anything else
concerning the product although you are allowed to release any information you desire about the
product. It is convention for certain information to be released in anticipation for the games release
and this will make consumers want to purchase the product. Other information such as the type of
game engine used, what platforms the game will appear on such as PlayStation and Xbox will not be
released as well as who is involved in the product such as other game developers i.e. ‘Havok’.
I will not include any inappropriate material within my poster. I can though include some
inappropriate material when creating my sprites because the game is an 18+.As there is no age
restriction it allows for sexually explicit material to appear in the game but only to a certain extent. It
also allows for alcohol and drugs to be represented within the game but not on any publicly
displayed posters or adverts. Other illegal activities can appear in the game too. A game that could
be seen as racist and has had some controversial news coverage supporting the idea is Resident
Evil:4. This is because all the zombies within the game are black and the 2 main characters who are
killing the zombies are white. This could be taken out of context and seen as racist but the game was
set in Africa where the majority of people are black so it isn’t actually racist but has been under
scrutiny about the matter.
I will not include any material that will scrutinize race or gender in any way as this could be seen as
racial or sexual discrimination which could end in a legal case. I will not include anything that could
be derogatory towards anyone which could be seen as slander. I will include character
representation of real people as long as they give me their permission too. I will only represent them
within the game as they wish to be represented.
I will not include any content within the game that could be seen as homophobic as this could lead
to a law suit. An example of homophobic content in a game is Leisure suit Larry which represents gay
2. people in a very stereotypical way. It is a very sex oriented game and shows quite explicit material.
The game shows a gay man dancing in speedos and the dance is very flamboyant and is suggestive of
a stereotypical gay person.
The in-game interface also known as the ‘HUD’ (Heads Up Display) refers to basically
everything you can see on your screen related to your ‘character’. This includes the health
bar, mini-map, ammunition etc. (Depending on the game). ‘Heads-Up Display’ is an object,
usually scripted, that attaches to your screen rather than to your avatar. HUDs are often
used to control other scripted objects, providing an additional "push-button" interface for it.
An in-game interface allows the player and world to interact as one. Without it you would
have a world separated from the player.
Print media art is everything to do with the advertisement and sale of the product that is
printed. This includes: posters, game packing, box cover, manual and the label.
The print media art can be used as an incentive to pay more for the product. As you can see
in the picture you get more than just the game for the right price. It can include such things
as a more sophisticated case - with this copy of ‘halo wars legendary edition’ you get a
metal case with different images on, along with a place mat, exclusive art work of the main
character’s as well as concept art which can also be a type of print media art - .
The target audience for the game will be 18+ as this is the age restriction placed upon the
game. Although it doesn’t appeal to a wider audience because of this restriction the game is
in no way handicapped of sale. I know this because many games are 18+ and most sell really
well. Interestingly 90% of all games put on the market are exempt of law enforced ratings.
This is because most games are classified under the PEGI rating system which is a voluntary
system and holds no legal obligations. This means although games are given a 12+ 15+ and
18+ rating you do not in fact need to be these ages to buy the games. This allows for a wider
audience and possibly more sales. Another reason as to why I don’t think the rating of a
game will impact the sales is because some of the best-selling Xbox 360 games have age
restrictions on them and most are either 15 or 16+.These age restrictions will not apply to
my poster though as it will be on public display and therefore cannot contain any age
restricted content such as gore.
I will use Lossless compression to make the file size of my poster smaller once I have
completed it using Photoshop. I will also use it to reduce the size of my sprite files. This will
help me to send the files over the internet a lot faster and will take up less space when
moving them from hard drive to hard drive or hard drive to pen drive.
Thumbnail sketches are small sketches used by artists to give them a rough idea and quick plan of
their desire outcome. They are used as a memory aid to help the artist know what their picture will
eventually look like and gives them something to go back to if they forget. Thumbnail sketches can
be done using any writing material including pen or pencil. They show minimal detail and are usually
only a couple of inches in length or height. These sketches are drawn out as general shapes and
outlines but can be coloured in and in fact is a great way to sample possible colours therefore giving
3. the artist an idea of what their final design will look like. These sketches can be used when planning
concept art for the game and also final designs for characters, vehicles and even the bitmap. I will
use my thumbnail sketches to help me create my sprites. They are a small version of my final images
and will allow me to see what the final sprite will look like. It is also helpful for you because you can
see what the sprites will look like in case you want them to be changed or re-done.
Cel shading is the process used to make cartoons look like they do or any CGI for that matter. This
can be a great way to finish off a game and can be the reason for so many sales. The cel shading
gives the model its ‘look and feel’ therefore it is very important. It can give the game its atmosphere
and make it more enjoyable to play.
Composition is how the poster is laid out. For good composition everything within the poster
must be readable and a relevant size. For example having backwards text in a font that is
unreadable and a picture that is too small isn’t good composition. The best way to achieve good
composition is to look up poster conventions and follow them as these conventions are the bets
tried and tested way to create a poster. The general conventions of a games poster are: A big title in
readable font, one big picture that is often the background of the poster, also the release date if it is
known should be included on the poster and sometimes the platforms that the game will appear on.
The typography or the lettering on my poster will be ‘PriceDown’. The font is readable and the
colour contrast compared to the rest of the poster will make it stand out therefore allowing the
consumer looking at the poster to instantly know the name even at a quick glance. The title will be
the biggest text on the poster because it is the most important to the consumer. I will also include
release date but this will be in a smaller font and the font will be Bell Gothic STD light as it is an easy
to read font.
I will make sure that my images for my sprites and posters aren’t too big and that it is possible to
print the images out. I will also make sure the printer that is used to print my images is capable of
printing 24 bit colour which is the best quality of colour possible. If the printer is unable to print to
such a high quality I will make sure my images are 8bit colour so the printer is able to print out my
graphics.
My colour scheme was dark reds and greens this is because they are associated
