2. The camera:
Throughout my experiences on this media course we
have used two very different cameras:
From a small hand held flip camera. To a Cannon 650.
I’ve learnt a lot about how the Canon camera works though the
construction of our film. By using this camera we were able to achieve
maximum quality possible, the focus element to this camera is fantastic.
We wouldn’t have grasped the same effect
on the audience if some of our shots weren’t
in crisp focus as they allow the eyes to see
exactly what is going on. By having a clear
in focus shot of this girl the audience are left
with the image in their minds.
Advantages: Advantages:
Disadvantages:Disadvantages:
• Easy to use
• Portable – can be placed inside a pocket
• Doesn’t require any wires.
• Can still be attached to a tripod easily.
• Not as heavy and breakable as a canon
camera.
• Does its job of recording videos, sounds.
• Includes technical settings -timer option,
camera settings light dark ect, shutter
speed, aspect ratio ect.
• Has a flash option so it can be used at
night or in dark spaces.
• Can be attached to a tripod.
• You can take pictures as well as film
• The screen is very small.
• The picture quality is okay but not great.
• You cannot pause or stop filming so if you
make a mistake you have to continue.
• It’s a very expensive piece of equipment.
• It can be complicated to use if you aren’t
use to it.
I was fortunate to already have first hand experience using a Canon
camera as I have one in my house that I use quite often. However, I only
knew the basic skills needed and I have definitely learnt a lot more about
the camera though the project.
3. Working with:
1 Final Cut Pro
As a group we used final Cut Pro for the construction of our opening. Once we had filmed the raw
footage and dismissed the clips we no longer needed, we could import our clips into final cut pro.
2 Logic Pro x
• We were now able to arrange our footage linking the different clips of the girl
and the garden shots together to create a working sequence.
• Once we were happy with the order of our clips, we added transitions in-
between some of the clips. This helped the video to flow and look
real. We found a few we liked as they matched up with the transitions used in
• We used logic pro to make
the full soundtrack which
goes with our opening.
• We also used the
keyboard and the library of
sounds to add further
noises such as sudden
bangs, footsteps ect over
the top of the base line we
had previously chosen.
• This program was more
tricky for me as there was
so many different choices
to pick, but overall I
enjoyed the experience of
using something new.
• The final element we needed to include were the title credits, we needed to pick the font
style and size the credits would come in. After this was completed the video was edited
and we moved onto the sound.
• I found using this program easy to use and once I had gotten use to all the aspects we needed to
explore I became very familiar with everything.. The only down side to this program was it saved
onto the same computer, you couldn't’t transfer it across.
3 Garage
Band
• Once the footage was completed and the audience had something to watch we were
able to ask their opinions on the product we had created. As a group we let them watch
the video then asked a series of questions which we recorded using Garage Band.
• I like Garage band because its simple and easy to use, it was also very helpful to us as
the soundtrack we wanted was very difficult to obtain. We were able to match our initial
idea we had in mind. We were inspired by the music throughout the opening to
‘American Horror Story’ therefore we wanted to find something similar.
4 Imovie
• With our audience feedback recorded, we needed to import the sounds into iMovie. This allowed
us to edit the parts we needed and to crop the elements we didn’t need.
• I found this easy to use, the only problem was how you could only access this on the computer you
started to work on it, as there was no way of transferring it to another computer, this was the same
problem I had with final cut pro. This limited us from being able to work at home and share ideas
between other members in the group.
the ‘American Horror Story’ opening. These included ‘boom, flash, smir’
4. Bloggers:
• Bloggers was a program I became very familiar with throughout the
course. I had never experienced making a blog before so I enjoyed
learning about the different elements there was to do within. I also liked
the excitement of never doing this before and learning new interesting
points.
• I was able to learn how to upload interesting and colorful pieces of
work, and also how to import podcasts, prezi’s, slideshare
presentations and construction posts.
• From using blogger I feel I have gained key knowledge and skills that
could potentially benefit me later in life, if I ever needed to create a
blog.
• I liked how easy and simple this program was to use.
• The layout was clear and easy to read which enables
you to see where everything is straight away.
• If you have made a mistake on a post, you can easily
go back and change it just by clicking ‘edit’ rather than
having to re-do the whole piece of work.
• Other people can see your blog which makes
presenting feedback very easy to do.
• I think bloggers is a very creative and innovative way of
presenting pieces of work in an interesting format.
What did I like about bloggers: What I didn't really like about bloggers:
• I wasn’t happy with the limited choices
of colours and fonts available. There
was only 7 font styles to choose from
and 8 basic colours with different shade
options.
• I feel in some cases, the text written on
some peoples blogs looks too heavy
going and one of the reasons for this is
due to the lack of available style options.
5. Useful Websites:
1 www.artofthetitle.com
• This was a useful website for our group as we were able to watch
hundreds of thriller openings. This allowed us to see successful
footage that’s already made it onto the big screens.
• The website listed in date order, so we could see new thriller
realises to see what the public want to watch to date compared to
what's unpopular to watch now.
• Art of the title was a free and easy source for us to watch well
known films, we gained knowledge on successful thrillers and
unsuccessful ones too which helped us get where we are now with
are product.
• I was already familiar with YouTube before starting this project, but in
a different way. Before this project I used YouTube purely to listen to
new music.
• However, now I have learnt how to upload videos so that other people can watch
them, also how to copy the link onto our blog for people to watch that way I have
started doing this at home myself..
• We had to create YouTube accounts to post our videos onto, this is something I
didn't’t know how to do before and I'm glad I gained this knowledge. I now have a
separate YouTube account which allows me to subscribe to my favourite channels
and create playlists.
• Also, when deciding on the perfect soundtrack to match our video, we used YouTube
to listen to the different base sounds we could have.
• I like YouTube because it has a number of different purposes and helped us create
the final product we came out with, its easy to navigate around the website and
anyone can use it.
• The only downside to using YouTube for our soundtrack is we couldn’t just pick the
first one we liked, we needed to ensure and provide proof the sound we were using
was copyright free.

6. Overall:
I am happy with the knowledge I've gained throughout the construction of my
media product. I am now able to use programs I had never even heard of
before this year – final cut pro, bloggers, Imovie ect.
The skills I have acquired within the last 6 months will be vital to me when
creating my next product.
I have learnt a number of new things I
had no idea about before.
This is beneficial to me as I will be able
to use these skills in later life. Also,
without these vital skills I wouldn't’t
have been able to achieve the potential
highest grade possible.
