1. Romancing the Apocalypse Chapter 20 â Where Sleeping Dogs Lie
Welcome back to Romancing the Apocalypse! Episode 19 saw the âtripletsâ lift the Criminal, Law Enforcement and Politics
restrictions, leaving Journalism for their nephew Kai. Will Kaiâs mother Rachel find happiness at last with Brenda? Will Rhea get her
five top-level businesses? Will lucky Juno find perma-platness dating the lovely LucyPeppeR? Will Jenny raise her twenty puppies or
kittens and satisfy her Family-oriented soul with pettably-cute-mohawk guy Craig, despite his past with Rachel? Will I have any
marbles left when this generation of my Apocalypse is over?
For the most complete set of rules for Pinstarâs wonderfully diabolical Apocalypse Challenge, as well as the Apoca-borgâs proposed set of
rules for the FreeTime and Apartment Life expansions, check out http://apocalypsechallenge.boolprop.com.
Note: I have installed and am playing this Apocalypse through the Bon Voyage expansion only, so none of the new Borg rules apply.
2. At Robin and Gordonâs cabin across the street, they made good on their promise to move in Craig and Brenda.
3. A smudge of eyeliner and lipstick for Brenda and a shopping trip for them both, and they were ready to face the world away from Sim
State.
4. âNow that weâre past the biggest hurdle, what now?â Brenda wondered out loud.
âSit tight and wait for them to call.â
âThem? Whoâs them?â
Craig gripped the edge of the sink, admonishing himself to be more careful. âI mean Rachel. Just Rachel.â
âRachel...â Brenda sighed. âAre you sure I canât call her just once?â
âNope, itâs against the rules.â
5. Brenda had her choice of three beds upstairs, but she chose instead to catnap downstairs. Where the phone was.
7. âYes, we made it out! Craig and I are official grown-ups now... real graduates with real diplomas and some pretty mad skills, if I do say so
myself!â
9. âYouâre such a sight for sore eyes!â
âBrenda!â Rachel squealed, âyou look more beautiful than ever!â
10. âBut still the same Brenda. Iâm so glad you didnât change.â
11. They gazed at the cabin across the street.
âSo close, and yet so far.â
âI hope for not too long, though. That is, if you want..?â
âI want,â Brenda replied without hesitation.
12. Come to find out that Brenda is a Romance Sim, too. *Picture two +3500 over their heads* Donât know why, but I always thought she would
be Knowledge.
13. Not long after, Craig received his own invitation.
âGads, this place is becoming quite the little nest for you lovebirds.â
Jenny giggled, and Rhea continued to gawk, tact not being one of her strong suits.
14. Craig, however, sprang away self-consciously. âHowâs it goinâ!â he blurted.
âAll right, you Tarzan she Jane, eh?â Rhea added a Three Lakes chest pound for effect.
âRhea, Craig. Craig, Rhea,â Jenny introduced a mite tersely.
âJenny and I were just, ah... I mean...â He was knee-deep in it now, and sinking deeper by the second. Just what? Oh, nothing of
consequence, unless you counted falling in love with a loverâs sister something of consequence...
âCool âhawk,â Rhea said, reaching out a hand. âLet me feel that...â
But thatâs my âhawk! Jenny thought childishly. She put her hands on Craigâs shoulders and pulled him out of Rheaâs reach. âYou couldnât
even feel it with your gloves on,â she sniped. âCraig, Iâd like to talk to you. In private?â
âYeah, go for it, guys!â
15. Jenny couldnât help noticing a change in Craigâs demeanor.
âIs this okay? Itâs private, at least.â
Craig turned his head suddenly. âWhatâs that?â
âWhy so on edge? Weâre quite alone.â
âI thought I heard something.â
âWell, sometimes thereâs weird sounds around Ratnaâs grave, but thatâs probably just my imagination.â
That wasnât what he had meant, but now that she mentioned it... âDoes he haunt?â
âNot so far, thank goodness.â
16. Craig relaxed a little and sent a splash Jennyâs way.
âYour sisterâs a character.â
âIâve never seen Rhea be so nice to someone right off the bat.â Jenny splashed him back. âMust be that âcool âhawkâ of yours.â
18. âNot me, thatâs for sure. In fact, I think I could pet it all night...â
19. âHey, youâre awfully tense.â
âAm I?â he replied distantly.
âI thought... in the house... you felt it, too. Was I wrong?â She closed her eyes and rested her forehead against the back of his neck.
22. âWe have to stop.â
âNot on my account, I hope?â
âThereâs something I have to tell you.â
âPlease donât tell me itâs something bad?â
âNot how you mean. But yes, itâs bad, especially the way I handled it. But I donât want to go into it here.â
âNot here in the hot tub?â
âNot here at your house.â
âBecause?â
âGet dressed and Iâll take you out. Iâll explain everything. Heh, or try to, at least.â
âBut you do love me?â
âI do.â
Jenny sighed. âI guess we go out then.â
23. They didnât even make it to the car.
âReally, Craig, Jenny? How dare you! My sister!â
âI was going to come clean with you both tonight, I swear!â
âCraig?â Jenny squeaked.
âYou mean Jenny doesnât... you didnât say anything about us?â
âUs? Rachel... Craig..? Youâre..? But why didnât you say anything..? I never would have...â Jennyâs eyes welled up and she turned away
and went to the other side of the room.
âNow see what a royal mess youâve made?!â
âI know, I screwed up! Iâm sorry. Jenny... Rachel... Iâm sorry.â
24. âI didnât go after her, and I didnât mean for it to happen, Rachel, it just... did.â
â.....â
âPlease, Iâm not the scumbag you think I am.â
â.....â
âIâm not, I swear. I love your sister.â The placating tone lessened and he said with conviction, âI love Jenny.â
â.....â
âLike you love Brenda,â he added deliberately.
âJuno, can you stop that infernal drumming for one minute?!â Rachel snapped.
âSorry, I was trying to be discreet.â
âHow did you find out?â Craig asked.
âRhea was rattling on about how funny it was that Jenny Craig were all gaga over each other, âyour friend with the cool âhawk,â her
words. Then when you two walked in...â
âI was going to take Jenny out and tell her everything tonight. And then I was going to âfess up to you.â
â.....â
âI never wanted to hurt either one of you, but youâre right, I have made a royal mess.â
25. Jenny stood numbly, but still within earshot.
Rachel continued after some contemplation, âThis was a mess to begin with. Perhaps ending it this way was best, at least for us. Now I
wonât have to go pussyfooting around you with Brenda either.â
âReally? Does that mean weâre square?â
Rachel glanced at Jenny. âYes, I think you can consider me the least of your worries now.â Her tone went from half-teasing to
completely serious. âUnless you hurt her again. Then I should expect your ass will be getting the boot to kingdom come.â
Craig exhaled the breath he wasnât aware heâd been holding. âThank you, I accept.â He turned in Jennyâs direction. âJenny?â
â.....â
âJenny, please, come outside with me. We have to talk.â
Jenny wished she could storm over and tell him to go to hell. She was hurt, and jealous, but that was also the strangest breakup she had
ever heard, or ever imagined she would hear.
âCome on, Jenny,â Rachel cajoled, âCraigâs a great guy. Iâm sure heâs going to be really good at groveling for forgiveness.â
â.....â
âThatâs okay, Jenny, Iâll go. I donât want to push you.â
That was her, all right, a big pushover. Unable to stop herself, she followed him outside.
26. âIâd still like to take you out.â
âI donât want to anymore. Besides, whatâs the point?â
âIâm sorry.â
âI donât understand you and Rachel at all.â
âAt Sim State, I loved her. A lot of people loved her. And it wasnât about sleeping around, either.â
â.....â
âItâs kind of something that defies explanation. Maybe Rachel can.â
âWhy couldnât you have just told me?â
âThings happened so fast, I never knew what hit me. I couldnât think of a way to tell you without it ending, and I didnât want it to end. I
donât want it to end.â
âI canât help feeling what we have is a lie.â
âI love you, and that isnât a lie.â
Jenny scowled. âI want to be mad at you, so stop it!â
âNot until I make one thing perfectly clear...â
28. âYou are not, and never were, second best,â he said, taking her hands in his.
Yep, she was definitely a pushover, but how could she help it when he was reading her mind?
âJust shut up and go home. Iâm supposed to be teaching you a lesson and youâre ruining it!â
âIs that what you want? Me to go home?â
âI think Iâm entitled,â she said with a pout. âI have my pride, you know.â
âThen as you wish, Princess Buttercup. By the way, I want to graduate three kids from college. You?â
â...Raise twenty puppies and kittens,â she admitted.
âThatâs some pair, huh? Sounds like heaven.â
She bowed her head, but not before he saw her smile.
He took a step closer and gently kissed her forehead. âTake pity and donât make me wait too long, okay?â
She looked up and watched him go, knowing it wouldnât be long at all...
29. With the Politics restrictions lifted, there were tons of things to keep a boy busy, and no kid in this family had ever been as busy just
being a kid as Kai.
30. âCome," Rhea beckoned, "tell me about your wares.â
âIâm selling the best lemonade on the block!â
âOh yeah? How much?â
âJust fifteen simoleons.â
31. âHow about a free sample?â
âYou canât trick me. Money first, Auntie.â
âI like your business sense, kid. You must come and work for me someday. If someone would ever let me get even one business off the
ground.â
33. As Rheaâs incessant yammering about starting a business reached a fevered pitch, Juno read up on the wondrous benefits of fresh juices
and set to planting a small orchard and garden, as businesses were known to be very trying to oneâs Aspiration level.
âI did the fertilizing already, now we get to plant!â
âLike this, Uncle?â
âYeah, but be sure not to pack the dirt down too hard. Just go over it lightly like this.â
34. âOf course they like water, but not too much.â
âLike this?â
âPerfect.â
35. âUncle, whatâs that over there?â
âWhere?â
âBack here!â Kai answered, trotting toward the far back corner of the lot.
Juno saw where he was headed and hurried after him. âKai, wait!â
37. Kai came to an abrupt halt and stared.
âGray bread,â he said in a soft trance-like voice.
38. âWhat did you say?â Juno asked as he caught up.
âGray bread,â Kai repeated, louder this time.
Juno gulped and tried not to sound too shaken. âThis is where your dad is buried.â
40. âI remember when you said that, Kai. It does sort of look like gray bread, I just never thought you would... you were so young, just a
baby, really.â
âI saw it right after I drank the Smart Milk. Maybe it was the Smart Milk.â
âI bet youâre right. And now youâve discovered what it meant.â
Kai nodded.
âAre you okay?â
Kai nodded again. âWhat was he like, Uncle?â
âTo be honest, I barely knew your dad. He didnât... he wasnât here very long. Your mom can tell you much more about him than I can.â
41. âBut youâve gotta know something! Please!â
Junoâs heart ached at the crack in Kaiâs voice.
âWell, I do know he was a very famous Celebrity Chef for a long time. And before he moved in with us, we didnât have much to eat. Fish,
hamburgers and hot dogs, sandwiches, cereal and salads were about it.â
âNo spaghetti?â
âNope.â
âMac and cheese?â
âNo mac and cheese either. And no chili or pork chops or pancakes either.â
âNo pancakes?!â
âNo pancakes.â
âSo we have all that stuff to eat because of my dad?â
âYes.â
âThen he was a hero, right?â
â... Yes, you could say he was a hero.â
43. â... I canât say for sure, but I think it was a heart attack. And if you want to know anything else, youâll have to ask your mom.â
â... Okay.â
âAnd I think itâs best if you donât come here at night.â
âBecause of his ghost?â
âYeah.â
44. âDo you like ghosts, Uncle?â
â *Brrrr* Heck no! And nobody in our family has been Knowledge for a loooong time.â
âMaybe Iâll become Knowledge and want to see his ghost.â
âWhy donât we cross that bridge if you come to it, okay? And until then, I donât want you coming here at night. Itâs very important.â
âI wonât, Uncle.â
45. âTime to go back now, itâs going to get dark soon.â
48. Juno wondered if the awareness of his fatherâs grave would affect Kaiâs sleep and he started checking in on him before he went to bed
himself.
âIs something wrong, Uncle?â
50. Most days found Kai outside, and when increasingly distant cousins like Tara came over to play after school, all the better.
Tara Berry, youngest child and only daughter of 3rd (!) generation spare Haley and Blue(BerryPie360).
51. And Rhea took it upon herself to keep him in line with his homework.
55. âBut Iâm not playing with it. Itâs the only place the butterflies hang out!â
âYouâre not... here to be with your dad?â
âNo.â
His denial sounded genuine, to Rachelâs relief.
âWhat was he like, though?â Kai asked.
âHe was a very famous Celebrity Chef.â
âYeah, Uncle Juno said he brought back all the good food.â
âThatâs right.â
âWhat else?â
âYou, um, know nobodyâs perfect, right? I mean, Iâm not perfect, and even your aunts and uncle arenât perfect. And your dad... he wasnât
perfect either. But he gave me you, and youâre the best of both me and him.â
56. âThatâs all?â
âIâm sorry there isnât more to tell. He told me once that being a Celebrity Chef was everything to him. Thatâs what he was for a very long
time, way before I ever knew him, and really, I didnât know him all that long.â
âHow long were you married?â
âWe... never got married.â
âDidnât you love him?â
âI did,â she said, and that was only partially a white lie. âEspecially for giving me you.â
Kai frowned up at his mother, who began fidgeting under his scrutiny. The truth and tact didnât always go hand-in-hand.
âAnyway, itâs okay to catch butterflies here, but itâs really important that you donât come here after dark.â
âI wonât.â
âThatâs not a request, itâs an order. Understood?â
âYes, Mom. Have you ever seen Dadâs ghost?â
57. âNo. Itâs kind of funny though, I sort of expected to by now.â
âDo you like ghosts? Uncle Juno doesnât.â
âIâm kind of afraid of them, but they canât really hurt us now that thereâs plenty of food. You know, we could take his grave to a nice
cemetery in town.â
âNo, I want him to stay!â
âOnly on the condition that he doesnât scare you. Otherwise, weâre taking him into town and weâll visit him there. All right?â
Kai nodded.
âI have to work tonight. Do you want to have an early dinner?â
âCan we stay a little longer?â
â... Sure.â
58. Rachel hoped she was doing the right thing. She didnât want to scare Kai, but at the same time she didn't want to encourage the notion
of forbidden fruit. If Ratna continued to behave, she didnât see the harm in him staying. As long as Kai wanted him here, anyway.
59. The balmy afternoon wore on as Kaiâs giggles rang out and the butterflies continued to flutter by...
61. And Rhea was finally on the verge of getting the first of her five businesses.
âHell yes, itâs about time!â
62. Preparation for the businesses was a team effort. While Kai was busy at school, Rachel was busy making snapdragons.
63. And along her way to building a Servo, Rhea got the first inkling of a business idea.
âTheyâll be lining out the door for beauties like these!â
64. Kaiâs interest in catching bugs was further piqued one summer night when he saw a small team of fireflies milling lazily in the yard.
"If you can catch enough of them," his Uncle Gordon had once told him, "they will light up your jar like a lantern!"
65. âCome on, guys, just for a little while then Iâll let you go.â
66. So intent was Kai upon his mission, he wasnât aware of just how far out he had ventured.
68. He dropped the jar, the lantern forgotten, as his motherâs and uncleâs warnings rang in his ears.
69. âWhatâs your rush, boy?â
Kai froze in his tracks and braced himself to be approached by what he deduced could only be his fatherâs ghost. To his surprise and
relief, it drifted not toward him, but farther away.
70. His mom had said ghosts werenât a real danger now that they had plenty of food, and he was still full from the dinner heâd had not too
long ago...
He couldnât resist following the apparition, albeit at some distance. He stopped whenever the ghost did as it appeared to be agitated
about something, and then drifted farther still.
Kai continued to follow.
71. Only as he rounded the corner of the house did his instincts tell him he should go back inside, pronto.
72. âWhat did that mother of yours do with my bed, boy?â
Too late! âAhhhhh!â
âIs that all you have to say?â
73. âNow, donât look at me like that! That mother of yours always did bring out the worst in your old man...â
74. âNow you listen carefully. You tell that mother of yours I want my bed back! You got that, boy?â
75. âGo away, leave me alone!â Trembling from head to toe, Kai could barely manage more than a whisper.
âKai? Kai, are you out there?â
76. The sound of his uncleâs blessedly familiar voice gave him the courage to open his eyes again. He looked up warily and found his father
was gone... for the moment, at least.
âI-Iâm coming!â he called back and darted to the back slider.
77. âHere I am!â Kai huffed. âMy dadâs ghost is out there!â
He pushed his way past Juno, who did an immediate about-face...
78. ... and barreled straight into the arms of his Aunt Jenny.
âYou saw his ghost? You know youâre not supposed to go too far out at night! And alone!â
âSorry, Auntie!â
âDid he scare you?â
Kai thought he was already in enough trouble, and he sure understood why now. If they knew what he had done out there...
âN-no, I was catching fireflies and saw his ghost and I ran back to the house as fast as I could.â
âOh, thank goodness! I want you to go straight up to your room. Weâll stay up and keep watch tonight, just to be safe.â
âI wonât ever do that again, I promise!â
79. âJust one lousy bed, but no, she couldnât even get that right...â
80. Up in his room, a feeling of excitement began to mingle with his earlier fear. It had been scary, but he had faced the ghost of his father
and survived! Quite handily, too, the sudden urge to pee the main physical side effect of the encounter.
But just to be safe, he sought out a friend he hadnât given much thought to since his toddlerhood.
âIâm glad you donât want to sleep alone tonight either,â he whispered.
81. But Kai was far from alone that night as his aunts and uncle kept vigil until Rachel got back from work.
83. âThatâs the first time anyoneâs seen his ghost. I guess thatâs why we were kind of lax...â Jenny admitted sheepishly.
âYes. You were.â
âExcuse me, but now that we know his ghost is around, maybe you should find a job that doesnât keep you out all night,â Jenny retorted.
â.....â
âLadies, please!â
84. âIf our dear Ratna is going to cause a rift between my sisters, perhaps I can be persuaded to take him off your hands. I could make a
haunted house and charge admission, for instance...â
Rachel and Jenny gasped in unison.
âThat's sick!â Jenny squeaked.
âThis is not a joking matter!â Rachel responded crossly.
âYou two are no fun,â Rhea said, hiding a smirk.
85. âI talked to Kai about last night, and he's insistent that he doesnât want us to move the grave.â
âWe shouldâve kept a better eye on him,â Jenny admitted.
Rachel sighed. âYou were right at breakfast. Iâm going to quit.â
86. Rachel wasnât inclined to push skilling onto Kai like her mother, and Kai was the first Jones ever who didnât play chess, but he loved his
great-aunt Saraâs punching bag.
87. Time passed and Kai grew stronger and bigger, as kids are wont to do.
88. But what about his birthday, you may be asking?
Shoot me now. Jenny rolled a perfect want to throw a party and I thought it would be great to celebrate Kaiâs birthday at the top of the
safehouse-playhouse, complete with fireworks and sparklers. Of course, he was in his pajamas and I sent him to get dressed, not realizing
how late it already was, and the next thing I knew, Kai emerged here, already grown, and Jennyâs party dove from Good Time to Total
Disaster without the birthday boy present to blow out his birthday cake. Nice looking kid, though!
92. Things did not get off to a stellar start.
âSheesh, will you two get back inside? I brought you along to work!â
93. Rhea put Junoâs ten Outgoing points to good use and put him in charge of sales. Well, not literally in charge, as she insisted on being IN
CHARGE of everything.
His first customer was Steph aka PetTech, author of the wonderfully plotty âA Corporate Conspiracyâ legacy.
âI donât get the mask thing myself, especially when they stare at you at night,â Juno said, honest to a fault.
âWhat kind of a sales pitch is that!â Rhea snapped from the cash register.
Steph considered telling Juno about things much more disturbing than masks at Hudson House... such as disappearing bachelors.
Nah.
âI like them. Iâll take one of the red ones.â
94. âSon of a..!â How could something so basic be so bloody difficult to operate? No matter, Rhea vowed she would bash the thing into
submission if need be...
95. It took a while, but Rhea got the hang of the register and Kai hustled to keep up with restocking the masks that were becoming more
popular by the minute.
97. Thanks to plenty of espresso in the break room as well as snapdragons placed throughout the store, everyone was able to stay
refreshed.
98. A little too refreshed. Customers stayed and played kicky bag and stayed some more.
99. âEeee! So many lovely loyalty stars and simoleons...â
Donât you mean customers?
âSame thing. Tell me, what could be better than this!â
100. Yes! This business was approaching level ten!
âHereâs a special star for being incredibly gorgeous,â I said.
101. And we have one down, four to go!
Final stats for Mask:
Four RL hours (not bad!), I-lost-count-of-how-many Sim days and one tent in the back (but mostly they drank espresso)
Rhea: silver register and gold sales badges
Juno: bronze register and gold sales badges
Kai: silver restocking and gold sales badges
102. âGood job, boys!â
Unfortunately for the guys, the lemons and strawberries hadnât been ready to harvest yet. âI need a date with Lucy, bad.â
âI need a date, period, bad.â
As excited as Rhea was over the success of Mask, she was, if possible, even more so to go home, for something very special awaited her
return.
104. She carted the Servo up to the privacy of her room to begin the activation process.
105. And indeed, she had never laid eyes on anything so incredible... a work of art to rival any of the Mastersâ... masterpieces.
106. âYou are the mirror of my perfection and shall be known in this neighborhood as... Bender.â
107. Awkward Dating, Step 1:
Invite simself over and watch as she greets Juno with a very sweet Caress. Aaww.
Simself then proceeds to head for the hot tub.
117. Thanks to Junoâs Law Enforcement lift, Jenny was able to adopt a couple of puppies, Grover on the left, and Ripley on the right, which
hopefully should give her two toward the twenty she wanted to raise.
118. I donât know much about dogs, but Iâm guessing our girl Ripley here is a Schnauzer.
119. And our boy Grover looks part Chow, part... Wilford Brimley?
(Iâm a cat person and have only had one dog, a Chow/Rottweiler mix named Buddy, who lived to the age of ten. He was gorgeous and really
sweet with both cats and kids, with everybody really, and with him I learned to love dogs... as long as I donât have to live with them.)
120. A quick internet search on how to cope with the Raise 20 Puppies or Kittens LTW took me to Phishy Tutorial Pages which recommends
and illustrates an enclosed area to keep the animals with gates locked to disallow pets, and that sure makes things easy! The animals
keep each other happy and the only thing you have to do is make sure theyâre fed, have your Sims praise them for being playful with
each other, and get a high enough relationship with them to encourage breeding. If Iâd have known this strategy earlier, I wouldâve
started right after Jenny became a teen.
121. And now this rather odd-looking couple is expecting... canât wait to see the puppies. I think.
122. And now I leave you with our dear Bender with Grover in his cuter days.
Stay tuned for more businesses, more puppies, more dating and of course, more Kai. Thanks for reading and Happy Simming!
