Greece is a small country which is located in Europe and borders the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean
Sea, and the Ionian Sea. According to Economou (2010), the population of Greece was estimated
around 11 million in 2008 and is facing a decline. The culture of Greece is unique and vibrant in its
own way because its heritage reflects its national identity so well. Greek culture manifests the
social, political as well as economic spheres of its society. It is important to examine specific
elements such as values, beliefs, and perceptions that are enrooted in Greek society. The study sets
to bring out important tenets that create awareness about the culture of the Greece.
On language issues, the vast population of Greece speaks Greek which is their official language.
Greek, therefore, is the means of communication used in official business as well as the primary
vehicle of communication. Some section of communities in Greece use other languages such as
Russian, Bulgarian and Albanian, which are common among the minority groups in Greece (Martha

Muhammad was really devoted in his religion and would retreat into caves or mountains where he
would meditate. It was said when he was around the age of 40, is when he started receiving

Rome's contributions have lead to today's modern advances. Both have invented ideas and

Greek and Egyptian people made their living from farming or the things that surrounded them. This

My Reflection Of Skype
Skype Reflection I will start by saying that our conversations with everyone over Skype has been
my favorite thing I have had the pleasure to do since I have been in college. It was different,
informative, intriguing, and easily the most interesting exchange I have ever had. I not only
appreciate having been given the opportunity to be a part of this conversation, but feel fortunate to
have taken part in learning about others and their way of life. After speaking with Chris Saunders
and Panos and Stefania, I re–read Hofstede's dimensions and felt I learned more and understood it
better after speaking with them. I feel that I can read something repeatedly, but having a good
example and seeing it first–hand is the best learning experience I can have. To have a good take
away from the book with an even better example was the best way to learn this subject. When
speaking to Chris Saunders from Wales and England, I first noticed that he seemed as nervous as we
did. He was able to answer our questions with great content and was really funny. I felt that he had a
great amount of individuality and held true to his own beliefs. I also feel that Chris showed that he
fits into the masculinity dimension as he is successful as a writer and driven as a teacher. Since he
has moved around so much, he shows that he personally has a low uncertainty avoidance, as he can
take risks and is less resistant to change. An example of this is he was able to move to China, not
knowing much about the culture or the language and take the changes as they came at him. When it
came to talking to Chris, I think what surprised me the most was that there is a gap between 16 and
18 from what we would call high school to college. In the United States kids wouldn't know what to
do with themselves and I can't imagine what kind of trouble they would get into. It also surprised me
that he has lived in so many places. He has had the opportunity to learn so about so many cultures
and meet so many people and that is incredible. My impressions of Chris were that he is very
intelligent and funny. He has a great sense of what he wants in life and is able to accomplish those

Greek Idealism In Greek Culture
Imagine a perfect world where everyone in the nation spoke the same language, shared a common
worldview and was culturally united. This would be the Ideal world that the Greeks strove for and
succeeded in. Greek idealism is not how the world really is, but rather, a perfect ideal world, which
was the answer to their success. The ideas of the Greeks were created from their mind as opposed to
external reality composed of other outside forces. Throughout the paper, I will highlight specific
examples of idealism in the Greek culture, by focusing on their philosophy, art and literature. The
awakening of philosophical thought in Greece started in 600 B.C. (Messner 10–2–17). The mind
and the spirit were viewed as the two most powerful factors of someone. With the mind and the
spirit, the possibilities were endless. With these assets, they were able to portray their love of
wisdom. Philosophy is the ponder of the everyday life and what is happening in the world (Messner
10–2–17). The idealists of the philosophical world reasoned that "the physical world is illusory and
that behind it lies a realm accessible only by contemplation" (Humanities, 67). A specific example of
philosophy, is Plato's take on the Western ideal philosophy. In his philosophy he emphasizes the
importance of values and ideas, over matter (Humanities, 69). In Plato's eye, education and
knowledge are very important (Messner, 10–6–17). This is important because it helps us understand

place where modern democracy and government originated from. Democracy is a word that has

was a direct democracy where the citizens voted for their decision rather than electing people to

Reflective Essay On Greek Culture
My experience attending the "Seminar on Greece" with Dr. Khosrowshahi was a very interesting,
fun and informational way to gain knowledge of the different cultures and history of other parts of
the world. I do not have an extensive knowledge of Greek history or culture. I enjoyed learning the
different traditions and cultural rituals of the Greek culture. I learned a lot about the history of
Greece and how much the history influences many other cultures throughout the world. The most
interesting fact and important impression I took away from the seminar is my Mother's name is
"Diane", neither my mother or myself knew the Greek history behind her name. I enjoyed how Dr.
K used different ways to involve the students at the seminar to become engaged in learning and
experiencing Greek culture. I found the drum performance quite exciting and interesting. Also, the
young ladies demonstrating their cultural dance skills were very entertaining. After learning more
about Greek culture, I found it very interesting how much the alphabet and language influences
American English.
The part of the seminar I enjoyed most was Dr. K demonstrating his knowledge of Greek music by
demonstrating the drum. I enjoyed many other aspects of the seminar as well. I enjoyed the visuals,
including the pictures and videos used to provide a visual experience of Greek culture. The Greek
culture artifacts and photos from previous trips to Greece was inspiring and exciting to experience
as well. Also, student interaction was impressive throughout the entire seminar. There is not
anything I disliked about the seminar. The only thing I did not like was having to take off work to
attend. This is not anything involving the seminar or the presentation. Furthermore, I am thankful I
was able to have the opportunity to take off work to attend this continuing education experience.
Prior to this seminar, I was not aware of the extensive history of the Olympic Games. It was
interesting to learn the Olympics originated before Christ. Also, the Olympics truly represent the

Most Greek figures were influenced by animals and were occasionally created using different
animal body parts. The Egyptians were further involved in creating countless monumental
sculptures of their pharaohs and queens. Other than limestone the Egyptians also used painted wood
and sandstone and later used gold and bronze to strengthen their sculptures, while Greeks would use

Culture Shock Essay
Culture shock is a psychological reaction people feel when they live for an extended period of time
in another country or culture that is different than they are accustomed to. Many college students
who study abroad and military families experience culture shock. It is a normal process, and most
people go through it, to some degree, when they enter a new and different culture. The five stages of
culture shock are: honeymoon, crisis, recovery, adjustment, and reverse culture shock. We have
family friends who lived in Greece for three years from June of 2014 and returned in June of 2017.
Prior to their three–year stay, they annually spent several weeks each summer in Athens. Their
daughter, Maggie, experienced the five stages of culture shock.
The first few weeks were very busy for the family. Getting moved and settled in. During this time,
the honeymoon stage, the move was a new and exciting. Maggie was fascinated with the country
and was excited and happy to return for a longer period of time. Since it was summer, she was not in
school yet, she could swim in their pool and several times a week she could visit the dig site where
her parents work every summer. In Greece, she also could eat her favorite dessert, Baklava (which is

Greece is a country enriched with culture and history. So much so, that Greece has two different
variants of Cinderella. Authors Anthony L. Manna and Soula Mitakidou, and illustrator Giselle
Potter who used watercolor media, took both retellings to create the picturebook The Orphan: A
Cinderella Story From Greece. In the Author's note, Manna and Mitakidou disclose how their tale is
mostly based on their translation of the orphan's tale that can be found in Chatzitaki–Kapsomenou's
The Modern Greek Folktale, where Manna and Mitakidou also got their title. The two authors also
took inspiration from their translation of Loukato's version of the tale in Modern Greek Folk Texts.
They take references such as, religious themes, and the use of honey as a vital plot device. Manna
and Mitakidou also decided to change one very universal part of most Cinderella stories. Instead of
making their Cinderella, the orphan, be the submissive character, the authors decided to have the
orphan be her own heroine and go after her prince. Deciding her own faith, rather than just waiting
in ashes or a dark corner for her prince to come and save her. Manna and Miakidou's orphan is a
