the world by oil exploitation.
El Caño Cristales is located in the Sierra

department of Meta, Colombia.
The National

(ANLA) granted
permits to a US oil
company to drill 150
wells in protected
areas in the
municipality of La
Macarena, an area
located only 67

Cristales, the river
classified as the "
world".
Four years ago, the municipality of La Macarena, in
the department of Meta, was inspected by engineers of
the oil company Hupecol Operating, to start the
exploitation of some areas. Finally, after evaluating the
feasibility of the project, which cost 3 billion pesos (US $
1 million), the oil company applied the procedures to
begin the 150-well project.
Fernando Irégui, director of ANLA, approved the
project despite the fact that the inhabitants of the area,
as well as mayors, municipal leaders and councilors
rejected the measure because it is an ecocide.
