Goals Of Wildlife Conservation
The main goals of wildlife conservation are to preserve and protect nature so that it will be around
for future generations of both wildlife and humans to enjoy. It is essentially the attempt to protect
endangered animal and plant species and their natural habitats. In researching two different
vertebrate species in the United Kingdom, one that has benefitted from a population increase in
recent years and one that has recently seen a decline in population, the similarities and differences in
the various challenges that they face can be investigated. The proposed solutions to improve the
situation for the declining species will then be discussed.
Species Recent History
The UK population of the greater horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, has significantly
increased over the last twenty years (Bat Conservation Trust, 2017). This recent success can be
attributed to many factors such as the change in climate providing a more favourable environment
for populations to grow. The increased temperatures in the spring season result in pups being born
earlier in the year and a greater abundance of sustenance being available (Froidevaux et al, 2017).
Females will mate from autumn until spring visiting various breeding territories in doing so. This
enables the females that rarely change colonies, to strengthen their colonies by choosing the best
possible genetic material to pass to their offspring (Rossiter et al, 2000).

Wildlife Conservation in India
1. Meaning Of Wildlife
Wildlife includes all non–domesticated plants, animals and other organisms. Domesticating wild
plant and animal species for human benefit has occurred many times all over the planet, and has a
major impact on the environment, both positive and negative. Wildlife can be found in all
ecosystems. Deserts, rain forests, plains, and other areas including the most developed urban sites,
all have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that
are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that wildlife around the world is impacted by
human activities.
Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways
including the legal, social, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The activities undertaken under the adage of WCS include scientific research, national capacity
building, policy interventions, site–based conservation and developing new models of wildlife

The Project Elephant PE in short was launched in February 1992. It is a central sponsored scheme
that intended to provide all kinds of support to the elephant bearing states in India, be it financial or
technical for protection of elephants and their habitats. Elephants, the gentle giants of the forests are
much loved in India and this project was launched when their numbers started decreasing at an
alarming rate. The Project Elephant in India also aimed to decrease the human–elephant battles and
help in the welfare of domesticated elephants in India. Though project elephant was launched with
much enthusiasm years ago, but it has still not led to as much increase in the number of elephants as
it was expected. Wildlife conservationists state that the progress has been real slow and people in
charge of the project are themselves not very clear of the causes of decline in the number of
elephants. Project Elephant tries to ensure a free movement for the elephants and thus conserve large
areas for them that are called 'elephant reserve range'.

Anthropomorphism And Forest Animals
It can be suggested that Bambi's success in generating public support was a result of personifying
the forest animals. Bambi and his friends were given voices, thoughts, and emotions such as fear,
love, even curiosity that made them relatable to viewers. Anthropomorphism, by definition, is "the
attribution of human characteristics to non–human entities" (Skibins et al., 2015). "The purpose of
anthropomorphism in conservation is not to create fictional animal personas, but to create empathy
toward these animals and their ecosystems by stressing that animals have many of our
characteristics" (Chan, 2012). For example, when visiting a zoo, a mother may feel a special
connection when seeing a gorilla comfort her baby. By generating this relationship,
anthropomorphism poses a chance to increase public care for a species. Though anthropomorphism
may have an indirect relationship, it creates relatability between species, and "[r]elatability is linked
to concern, which can lead to an increased willingness to take conservation actions for a species"
(Lloyd and Woodside, 2013). Furthermore, anthropomorphism may be applied in public advertising.
Projecting human characteristics onto an animal, generating an emotional response, causes a product
to become subconsciously memorable. Using such a method in advertising has been shown to create
a link between the consumer and the brand. "The integration of explicit animal symbols... serves to
activate and connect associations in the minds of

Review of the Scientific Literature: Challenging the Conventional Value and Care of Canines
Canines are arguably the most common companion animal for the household in the United States,
while cats are the most common companion as a whole. As of 2012, the American Veterinary
Medical Foundation, a non–profit association established in 1863 and comprised of more than
86,500 veterinarians throughout various private and public practices, concluded through countless
surveys 36.5% of households that own a pet, own canines (AVMA).
In my review of the scientific literature, I will use scientific data to introduce the recent
development of canine studies and understandings to challenge the conventional perspective of the
domesticated household canine. Clinton Sanders, an emeritus sociology professor, specializing in
animal–human interactions at the University of Connecticut, is well known for one of his books,
Understanding Dogs. The canine–human encounters are one–way exchanges, lacking the
intersubjectivity at the heart of the true social interaction. People interact with animals as objects.
From the conventional perspective, dog owners babbling endearments to their canine companions
are simply taking the role of the animals and projecting humanlike attributes onto them (Sanders)."
In an effort to challenge the conventional perspective, I will visit the canine origin to find the
beginning of the canine–human relationship. I will then

Persuasive Essay On Endangered Animals
In today's modern society, humans have made countless improvements to our way of life with the
introduction of laws and ideas that makes life easier. But as we progress, we need to keep in mind
that there are other living, breathing individuals that are affected by the choices of humans. Plants
and wildlife also bear the burden that comes with changes in the environment. Activities that
humans engage in can have an affect many times greater on wildlife. Activities like deforestation for
housing developments or overfishing to provide for a high demand of seafood. Drilling for oil and
natural minerals destroys the ground that plants use for soil to grow and, in turn, limits the
hospitability of an environment for animals to thrive. Many ... Show more content on

So, if we lose a natural resource, it's gone forever, and we cannot bring it back. Therefore, we must
protect our resources while we still have them. Preserving certain animals also has a benefit for
agriculture. Most animals act as natural pest–controllers. Birds eat insects that can be harmful to
crops. These birds are at risk of danger because of the pesticides used by farmers which can poison
birds, let alone diminishing the food supply for the birds. Using insecticides can also risk poisoning
humans who consume the treated crops. Some endangered animals play a role in continuing the
ecosystem for other organisms. Animals such as the endangered Rhinoceros are umbrella organisms,
meaning that their survival guarantees the survival of other organisms below them. Rhinos use their
dung to fertilize the seeds of consumed plants. This allows more plants to grow and to be able to
provide for other organisms (Fight for Rhinos, 2017). The Asian elephant has a cultural and an
ecological importance in the Asian region. Unfortunately, these beautiful creatures are endangered
due to logging, which has destroyed the hospitability of their environment. Another threat facing all
elephants is poaching. Humans hunt these magnificent animals for their tusks and meat. Elephants
are important to the ecosystem because they control the ecosystem of their environment; the Asian

The Endangered Cross River Gorilla
With only two hundred and fifty to three hundred left, the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla
roams the African forests while on the brink of extinction (Save Our Species). Africa has many
populations of primates that are at the least endangered, and the Cross River Gorilla is the closest to
extinction and the least studied due to the rarity of observing them. (Save Our Species). These
gorillas are confined to small, mountainous areas that have been separated over and over again by
fragmentation, furthermore ruining the needed social aspect of the groups and need for vast land
(Imong, I., & Robbins, M.), (Save Our Species) The increased hunting and fragmentation of these
Gorilla's habitats has caused a large problem with how the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Within these small groups, the Cross River Gorilla has very predominant traits to keep them alive
when almost extinct and facing a harsh environment (What's Our Mission). These gorillas have a
considerably large body size and they also have quite large hands but short forearms; along with
small forward facing eyes that are put close together on top of a large nasal region (Etiendem, D., &
Tagg, N,). Due to being so big they need a lot of nutrients, and in order to obtain enough food, they
eat a large array of diets such as plants in many varieties, and fruits (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.).
Since they live in the higher parts of the mountains near the border of Nigeria, the amount of fruit
trees that exist are much lower than other regions, so they have come to rely on vegetation
(Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.). Since almost all fruit is seasonal, the primates must learn when they can
eat one type, and when vegetation is important. (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.), (Imong, I., & Robbins,
M.). The food they eat also determines how sexually successful they will be in the coming years.
The life history of the Cross River Gorilla is considerably long, ranging from gestation period to
death (Save Our Species), (Imong, I., & Robbins, M.). The normal female gorilla will not

The Environmental Impact Of The Environmental Movement...
Environmental Movement Report
Before the 1960s, environmentalism mainly focused on conservation of resources and the
wilderness and was apparent through Theodore Roosevelt's creation of five National Parks, one
hundred fifty National Forests and about two hundred thirty acres of land set aside for conservation.
In the 1960s, the environmental movement was really able to garner support as it was during many
other movements such as Civil Rights, Peace, and Women's. Many consider the spark for
environmentalism to be Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962), which exposed the harmful effects of
pollutants such as DDT on the environment and the public. While minute amounts of DDT cause
little to no harm to the organisms that are affected, as DDT moves up the food chain, it becomes
more and more concentrated. A generally accepted value is that for each level up in the food chain,
the concentration of pollutants increases by a thousand times. The effects of Silent Spring cannot be
overestimated. As people began to become more informed about pollution, more people demanded
that the federal government take action. The environmental movement then grew to encompass
global warming, clean air, energy, the ozone layer, and also pollution. These concerns were
vocalized in the very first Earth Day that occurred on April 22, 1970 and was established by United
States Senator Gaylord Nelson. A group of twenty million Americans, all coming from vastly
different backgrounds, celebrated the holiday

Tiger Conservation And Reserves Been Successful
"If the tiger is saved, it will ensure the maintenance of healthy natural ecosystems, not just for tigers,
but for everyone." (Freed)Are is the last line in the novel "Riding the Tiger: Tiger Conservation in
Human–Dominated Landscapes.". Tiger conservation is a process that our world has been trying and
carefully perfecting over the years, more so after tigers were officially put on the endangered list.
Tigers are one of the more popular endangered species in the world and because of the public eye,
the pressure for their protection is high. Mostly reserves are what organizations focus on because
they are the best answer for the tiger. So, how what about our conservation are successful? How
have they been improved? How are they dealt with on a social–political standpoint? In what ways
has human efforts towards Tiger conservation and reserves been successful? Through understanding,
research, experiments, and Trial– and–error Tiger conservations have become better and more
successful, and humans understanding of tigers have grown in order to assist in this process.
Enclosures have shown to have the most effective way of protecting tiger populations. The
enclosures are closed of plots of land that humans overall cannot interfere with, except replenishing
prey in need be and protecting the boarders. Enclosures are the best form of conservation because
there is little human intervention, the tigers are still wild and can grow and live by natural ways,
which will allow the growing

General Knowledge : Giant Pandas
General Knowledge Figure 3: Giant Pandas belongs to the bear family5 Giant Pandas are mammals
that belong to the bear family and they have very special characteristics, which can be easily
recognized. Pandas have a thick layer of black and white fur on their skin that feels like wool; it
protects from the cold during winter in the cool forest of their habitat in south central of China .
Panda bears are classified as carnivorous in terms of categorization, even though their food source is
entirely bamboo. It is reasonable to infer this as they have well–developed large sharp canine teeth
and strong agile claws for crushing tough bamboo and to protect themselves in the wild6. Though
Giant Pandas are charmingly placid and gentle when calm, they can also be dangerous. Pandas are
not docile, they were born to be fresh meat eaters, and fight if provoked. Pandas are not afraid to
face strong animals; there are very few natural enemies that can threaten them. Animals such as
Jackals, Leopards and the Yellow–throated Martens are usually the ones that and capture and harm
baby Pandas , when they're weak and helpless. This is also reflected in the movie "Kung Fu Panda"
to educate young children on animals in wild. In the plot of the movie, Kung Fu Panda's enemy is a
highly endangered species (snow leopard). The main reason they became enemies is attributed to
their requirement for similar habitat7. This research begs the question: "If Pandas are able to protect
themselves so well,

expanding human population. They have been restricted to some 20 isolated patches of forest above
1,200m on six mountain ranges in south–western China: Minshan, Qinling, Qionglai, Liangshan,
Daxiangling, and Xiaoxiangling. An analysis of satellite imagery has shown that Giant Pandas have
lost 50% of their already vastly reduced habitat between 1974 and 1989. The major factors
contributing the loss of habitat are the conversion of forests into agricultural areas, medicinal herb
collection, bamboo harvesting, poaching and large scale development such as road construction,
hydropower development and mining. Due to Chinas dense population Giant Pandas are restricted to
narrow belts of bamboo forest no more than 1.2km wide and this small amount is continuing to

The Eye Of The Beholder : Do Biological Invasions Impact...
In the eye of the beholder: Do biological invasions impact ecosystems on a functional level?
Biological invasions are generally considered an environmental threat, out competing native species
and increasing community homogenisation. Importantly though, invasive species also alter
ecosystems, yet little research has focused on whether invasions are a threat to their functioning or
services. This encompasses two main debates: determining whether invasive species alter ecosystem
functioning and, if they do, whether these impacts are positive or negative. After reviewing current
literature in an effort to resolve this controversy, it seems that in most cases, non–native species do
alter ecosystem functioning. However, whether this change had ... Show more content on

In fact many studies suggest introductions can increase species richness and habitat complexity4, 5,
though there is still a threat of ecosystem homogenisation6, and native species loss. Biological
invasions are therefore understood to have a variety of effects, yet whether environmental processes
will be altered remains unclear7. Ecosystem functioning may remain unaffected if the invasive
organism performs the same role as the species that has been replaced, but the introduction of new
functional traits or more efficient mechanisms could alter essential processes. If this is the case, the
debate must refocus to assess whether these changes will be beneficial or detrimental. Eradicating
non–natives to return the habitat to its natural state may lead to the loss of a functional trait that no
longer exists within the native community, and so the loss of an essential ecosystem service. To
make informed management decisions it is essential that we understand if, and how, biological
invasions alter ecosystem functioning. This review aims to examine current literature to begin to
resolve these two interconnected debates.
Do invasive species alter ecosystem functioning? An invasive species that performs a role which
already exists in the environment, by filling an empty niche or replacing native species, will
theoretically have no impact on the specified

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has the negative connotation of "putting in extra effort to
make a difference". However... when large companies such as Pick and Pay makes it their
responsibility to give back to the community it has the ability to change the lives of everyday,
struggling South Africans. CSR can be defined as management's obligation to promote and protect
the welfare of all stakeholders. (1) It is clear that Pick and Pay has chosen to make a difference in
the community and support their stakeholders.
"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a

Pick and Pay will ensure that all their social investments and efforts in social responsibility will
enable the community to be sustainable and thus become self–reliant and self–sufficient. By
teaching a community skills, Pick and Pay ensures that their investments will be maintained and that
they will make a difference in the community.
After 30 years of trading (2), Pick and Pay's first efforts at CSR was seen as a sprouting seed. Being
one of the first in Africa, Pick and Pay's philanthropic pillar is now based purely on Corporate

Endangered Wildlife Trust
1. Introduction
In 2009, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) was recognised as one of southern Africa's largest
environmental conservation organisations. The non–profit, non–government organisation grew
organically over the course of 35 years by broadening its vision to include "species, their habitats,
ecosystems and the role of the surrounding communities and landowners" (Price, 2010). While this
assisted in proving the EWT's commitment to its cause, this diversification put pressure on the
limited resources available to the EWT.
In 2008, prior to the financial credit crisis and the resulting economic downturn, the EWT decided to
analyse, revise and align its Conservation Strategy, and core objectives and goals. One year later,

The Three Levels Of Biodiversity
Biodiversity
What is Biodiversity?
Biodiversity describes the variety of different types of life found on Earth. It is extent of the variety
of organisms present in different ecosystems. This can denote to genetic variation, ecosystem,
variation, or species disparity (number of species) inside an area, biome, or planet.
Biodiversity is pondered at three levels:–
1. Genetic
2. Species
3. Ecosystem
Genetic Diversity
Variation amongst the same species between diverse groups and between versions of the same gene
in different individuals in a population is genetic diversity.

Cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and AIDS are some of the most lethal diseases that people die from
every single day. These diseases can be passed on into the next generation of our children. Although,
this problem could be avoided by using the method of cloning. In addition, our best and bravest
soldiers that are sent into wars often times come back with missing limbs. These veterans can't walk

quality of their life by letting them truly experience what goes on around them and that is why they

Biodiversity Is The Whole Collection Of Living Organisms
Every ecosystem on earth relies on the complex relationships made between individual species
which have evolved over millions of years. In this jigsaw framework, the loss of any one individual
species has a significant impact on the remaining species and the ecosystem, thereby affecting its
biodiversity. Per Merriam–Webster's Dictionary, biodiversity is the whole collection of living
organisms, consisting of different species of plants and animals, that cohabitate in an ecosystem.
This term collectively describes approximately all 8.7 million unique species, including every class
of bacteria, virus, plant, fungi, and animal, that coexist on earth. As such, biodiversity and the
conservation of biodiversity is extremely important to the human population and the health of all
ecosystems. For instance, biodiversity provides food and materials needed to strengthen our
economy. The selling of various plants and animals for consumption, entertainment/ recreation, and
building purposes keeps countless restaurants and supermarkets in business today. Also, through the
study of a vast array of plants and herbs, scientists have discovered cures to disease and have
lengthened the average human lifespan. By doing so, society has increased its research efforts in
medical herbs and in studying genomic sequences of various endangered species in hopes to
uncover new treatments and even piece together mysteries of the past, for instance, using molasses

The Issue Of Natural Resources Management
The next big issue in natural resources management will be concerns regarding urban sprawl and the
conflict it is causing between humans and wildlife. Urban sprawl involves a city expanding beyond
its originally set perimeters. This can occur as "edge cities" or smaller communities form around the
outskirts of a metropolitan area. Ranges that were formerly pastoral begin having people inhabiting
(Nechyba & Walsh, 2004). The wildlife that was previously occupying these spaces is disturbed.
This either pushes existing wildlife into less urbanized areas or causes more frequent contact
between humans and wildlife. Policies should be put in place in order to address the loss of habitats,
interaction between wildlife and humans, and wildlife dependence upon humans. In order for
policies to be instated, the importance of this emerging issue must be examined. The expansion of
municipal regions is "one of the leading threats to the conservation of biodiversity around the globe.
In the United States, tens of thousands of acres of wildland are converted annually to urban land
uses, and nearly 80% of all Americans live in urban areas." (Moorman, 2007). Wildlife agencies
need to educate the public on living with urban wildlife.
There are several results of development beyond the cities on native wildlife and their habitats.
"Urban sprawl and human population growth have clear and measurable consequences for wildlife"

The Importance Of The Extermination Of Animals
Studies indicates that nearly 16,000 type of animals, plants, fish and birds faces a grave danger of
becoming extinct. This issue has left many asking why this is happening, and if there is something
that can be done differently to protect them (Panda, 2013). I will specifically cover the following
animals: blue whale, polar bear, tiger and the mountain gorilla. These animals are among the 16000
animals that are critically threatened with extermination (Panda, 2013). In fact, as indicated in IUCN
Red List, approximately 22 out of a hundred of all mammalian class are likely to disappear in the
next century (Panda, 2013). I selected this topic since I had not actually deliberated the statement
previously, and was surprised after conducting preliminary research to establish the level of impact
on our planet associated with the extermination of such large number of animal species.
All that is known at this moment is what current literature work say in relation to the approximately
16000 endangered species (Panda, 2013). However, I do not intend to focus on such a large number
of animals. Therefore, I will narrow down my investigation to focus on blue whale, polar bear, tiger
and the mountain gorilla. Despite the fact that these animals are few, their number is significantly
reducing and something needs to be done in order to save them. Another issue that I wish to
investigate if the extermination of these five species of animals is likely to affect our very existence
as humans.

Benefits Of Black Rhino
The black rhino also plays an important part in a country's economy as they make up a large source
of income in countries like South Africa and Namibia, where ecotourism is extremely popular. They
are therefore contributing to the economic growth as well as the sustainability of these countries as it
produces job opportunities for the locals.
Black rhinoceroses are often seen with oxpeckers. This is an example of mutualism as both parties
benefit from the other. The colourful little bird eats all the insects and parasites on the rhino and thus
has a supply of food. It is also protected from predators whilst on top of the rhino. In return, the
rhino benefits as it no longer has bugs. The oxpecker also flies high and alerts the rhino of

Having lived in South Africa for so many years, we were made aware of the seriousness of the
poaching happening. The brutal and inhumane way these innocent animals are tortured and killed
for their horns is unacceptable and cruel. I have been fortunate enough to have gone on several
safaris where I have been able to see these beautiful creatures flourish in their natural habitat. As one
of the oldest mammals on Earth, dating back 50 million years, it is important to protect this creature
from poachers to prevent their extinction. The rhinoceros is an important mammal who plays a vital
role in the ecosystem, as they maintain local vegetation around them as well as having other animals
rely on them. These fossil–like creatures who have braved ice ages and fought off pre–historic
predators can simply not become extinct because of humans' wrong doing. The black rhino cannot
protect itself from poachers as they are helpless when it comes to the tranquilisers used. It is our
duty to put a stop to the illegal trade of rhinoceros' horns. I believe it is vital that we respect planet
Earth and coexist with each and every different species as they all play a part in the

Is Biodiversity Loss Important?
Do I contribute to biodiversity loss?
Is biodiversity loss important to me?
Biological diversity underpins the earths structure and survival encompassing all plant animal and
microbiology species (UN, 1992). Biodiversity is currently being lost at an alarming rate – with
current rates of extinction being 100 times the background rate (Stork, 2010), which has consequent
effects on other life on earth, disrupting eco–systems and environmental relationships. This raises
social, economic and political issues, while concurrently human population increases urbanisation
and demands on food and energy risking habitat and environment for species to survive. While
conservation strategies work to try to alleviate this ultimately much of the success of these projects
will ultimately rely on individual's involvement and support – the gravity of the situation is further
highlighted with more extensive and advanced species documentation. This essay will consider two
important questions in respect of my personal views on biodiversity and consideration of whether I
contribute to biodiversity loss and if biodiversity loss is important to me.
Do I contribute to biodiversity loss?
There are many ways in which humans contribute and cause biodiversity loss and homo sapien
dominance over most the globe (Johns, 2010) is considered a primary driver of the 6th mass
extinction. Personally, directly and indirectly my lifestyle and choices influence biodiversity loss in
many ways that I do and

Microbial Spatial Ecology : Old Dogmas Versus Current...
Microbial spatial ecology: old dogmas versus current perspectives Introduction Spatial patterns and
their associations with ecological phenomena is becoming an essential field within ecology, which is
extending into the microbial ecosphere. Microbes are often overlooked, which is surprising as it is
thought that they encompass a large proportion of the Earth's biodiversity (Torsvik, et al; 2002) and
exist in effectively every ecosystem. Microbes include the prokaryotes, viruses, micro–Eukarya,
fungi and algae and although microscopic, they can perform vital roles in the nutrient cycle (Beare
et al; 1992). Similarly they can mediate the oceanic carbon cycle (Karl et al; 2012). Moreover a
recent study located microbes in the biosphere that can affect the water cycle and their own
precipitation through atmospheric transportation (Christner et al; 2008). As microbes can perform
these crucial roles, you might conclude that research into their spatial patterns has been well
documented, sadly this is not the case. In the 1930s the Dutch botanist Baas–Becking described
microbial diversity as 'everything is everywhere, the environment selects'. Up until recent times this
statement has been taken to be fundamentally correct and is supported by authors such as Finlay
(2002). However criticisms exist over Finlay's conclusion, as he reasons that the global diversity of
protozoa has been established, which is disputed by Foissner (2006). That accuses Finlay of not

Essay Arguments for Environmental Conservation
Response 3: Arguments for Environmental Conservation Since the beginning of civilization
humanity has adopted a subjugating stance toward nature. Ecological exploitation has become the de
facto standard, contributing to the illusion of self–subsistence provided by modern society. This
mindset is untenable given humanities reliance on the natural world, as best demonstrated by the
critical importance of various parts of the environment to humanities continued existence. This
includes the importance of biodiversity to medicinal advancement and climate adaptation, the role of
insects in the renewal of the biosphere, and the importance of the environment for humanities
psychological health. A huge number of modern medicines are derived ... Show more content on

(31) In addition, biodiversity will be crucial for humanities continued survival in the case of climate
change or widespread crop failures. The majority of people on earth are reliant on four crops for
subsistence; wheat, rice, corn, and millet. (11) These crops are threatened by climate change and the
spread of disease facilitated by modern transportation. If humanity is to survive such an eventuality
it must be ready to draw upon the earth's biodiversity for replacements. And while there are
approximately 50 thousand plant species that could offer alternatives, this bank of resources is
quickly thinning as various ecosystems are being destroyed. (11) Other services nature provides are
more easily taken for granted. We depend on plant life to replenish the oxygen in the atmosphere,
and on insects to replace nutrients in the soil. (31) These insects are especially vital, as they are part
of the foundation of nearly all ecosystems. Without insects, plant species that rely on them for
pollination would quickly become extinct, including many of the species we rely on for food.
Following them would be species that feed on insects, as well as species which rely on vegetation as
part of their habitats. Finally, as insects make the prime contribution to soil renewal, even non–
insect pollinated plant life would begin to decline. (34) The result, according to Wilson, would

The Effects Of Environmental Degradation On The Environment
The human relationship to the environment has evolved over time as humans have made
technological advancements and cultural changes. While some may argue that humanity is distant
from nature, that could not be further from the truth. While the human relationship to nature is not
the same as it may have been in the past, humans still rely on nature for their livelihood. Humans
also have a strong impact on nature, and processes which occur in nature, through their actions.
In the last decade, the issue of environmental degradation has become a topic of global concern and
discussion. This discussion is threading together a narrative that helps the public – and scholars –
better understand the human relationship to the environment. While this push forward in
environmental agenda is a good thing, there needs to be an ongoing dialogue which allows for the
understanding that environmental degradation is not only a risk to a certain biome, but all of the
diversity that exists within a certain region – a good example of this being Papua New Guinea.
The rainforest of Papua New Guinea are incredibly rich and diverse environments; the rainforest not
only houses a wide variety of plant and animal species, but is also home many indigenous groups.
By examining the changes in Papua New Guinea's rainforest throughout time, a better understanding
of the complex and dynamic human relationship to nature will be achieved.

Zoo's Efforts to Help Conservation Essay
Since approximately 1250 B.C., ancient Egyptians had created and practiced the capture and display
of animals in what are now known as zoos (Fravel). Records describe such exotic animals as birds,
lions, giraffes, and tigers in captivity (Fravel). Since then, zoos have continued to entertain millions
with the exciting chance to view exotic animals up close and personal. Even in ancient Greece,
exotic animals were on display in fighting arenas, and in enclosed viewing areas. Originally in
America, zoos were just created so that royalty and the wealthy could flaunt their exotic animals to
the public (Leolupus). Today, with species threatened and habitats disappearing worldwide, zoos are
serving a new purpose other than the mere exhibition of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Examples of zoos that are well known for such programs include Animal Kingdom in Orlando, the
Oakland Zoo, and the San Diego Zoo. These three have won multiple awards and achievements for
breeding, conservation, and reintroduction of endangered species to their natural habitats. Many
zoos across North America participate in such programs like the Species Survival Plan Program
(SSP), which strives to increase the numbers of endangered species in zoos while ensuring healthy
and self–sustaining populations (Traw). According to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums
(AZA), programs like SSP have succeeded in increasing endangered species populations of many
animals, like red wolves, snow leopards, and giant pandas within the last three decades (Traw). It
has been estimated that the AZA has established around 113 SSP's spanning over 181 endangered
species within a variety of zoos worldwide (Traw). Breeding programs are extremely vital to
conservation efforts in zoos; without them, endangered species would be in serious threat of
extinction in their natural habitat. However, these breeding efforts also have important standards.
They make sure to breed the animals responsibly, healthily, and genetically safe. In some cases, the
goal and outcome of breeding programs is the reintroduction of the animals to their natural habitat,
which has a large impact on the recuperation of that animal's population.Reintroduction is the goal

Point Arena Mountain Beaver
The Point Arena mountain beaver (Aplodontia rufa nigra) is a federally listed endangered subspecies
that is restricted to the small area of Point Arena, in coastal Mendocino County, California
(Zielinski, et al., 2013). (See Figure 1). The Point Arena mountain beaver is a dark brown, medium–
sized burrowing rodent with small ears and eyes, and long whiskers and claws (National Park
Service (NPS), n.d.). The subspecies is semi–fossorial, spending most of its five to six year lifespan
in underground burrows (United States Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), 2011). The burrows are
typically found on moist and steep north–facing slopes or in well–drained gullies; each burrow
contains separate chambers for food storage, nesting, and excrement (NPS, ... Show more content on

The subspecies was also listed as a highest priority "Species of Special Concern" by the State of
California (USFWS, 1998). There are many factors that play into why the Point Arena mountain
beaver is classified as endangered. In addition to their low reproductive rate, according to USFWS
(1998), the vulnerability of the mountain beaver results from two reasons: 1) few populations with
extremely limited distribution; and 2) the number of individual populations are low. Habitat loss and
fragmentation is another concern for the Point Arena mountain beaver, any disaster, natural or
manmade, has the potential to impact the subspecies (USFWS, 1998). These threats include,
elimination or degradation from land development, livestock grazing, transportation and utility
corridors, invasion of alien plant species, and timber harvest (USFWS, 1998). Additional threats to
the subspecies include, predation by feral animals and household pets, poisoning, human caused
disturbances, clumped and fragmented distribution, vulnerability to localized catastrophic events,
like fires, storms, landslides, flooding, prolonged drought, and/or disease, and most notably genetic
isolation and drift (USFWS,

Persuasive Essay On Endangered Animals
The population of any species will naturally fluctuate over the course of many years, this is no cause
for concern; however, it becomes a major issue when these numbers drop unusually low. When
these numbers plunge below the healthy population range, systematic actions must be made
immediately if there is any aspiration of saving the species. Some actions include, but are not
limited to, declaring the animal as threatened or endangered and receiving the protection provided
by laws enforced internationally. Once the threat of extinction is prevalent, a species is then
considered endangered. Likewise, threatened is a term used to describe a species that is likely or
close to becoming endangered. Due to various changes in the environment, animals all over the
world are becoming progressively more endangered. In some instances these issues are irreversible;
regardless of the fact, there are a variety of ways to help these animals return to a healthy population
and avoid extinction. The three most effective ways to salvage the population of endangered animals
consist of: seeking assistance from organizations that fight to protect and assist endangered species,
enforcing more rigorous punishments for infringement of laws on poaching and exotic animal
trophy hunting, and stopping the use of toxic substances in natural environments.
There are a multitude of organizations in the United States and countries all across the world that

Investigating The Distribution Patterns Of Three Species...
Biology 2.6 Achievement Standard 91158 Cellana Denticulata, Chamaesipho Columna and
Chamaesipho Brunnea are three species living in the intertidal zone of the rocky shore. I am
investigating the distribution pattern of these three species and the factors affecting the zonation
pattern of these organisms. The aim of the investigation was to analyse and compare the distribution
of the separate species, regarding the adaptations and the intraspecific and interspecific interactions–
whether being competitive, cooperative or exploitative. The investigation took place at Sirens
Rocks. (see photo right) The distribution of these species are affected by abiotic and biotic factors of
which limit the upper vertical and lower vertical limit that the three organisms can endure, thus
providing a fundamental niche where the organisms inhabit. The ecological pattern presented at the
location of Sirens Rocks is Zonation, which is a community pattern, showing visual bands or zones
of which is created by the varying tolerance to different abiotic factors and biotic factors. The

Essay on Preventing the Extinction of the Simpona Lemur
When many hear about a lemur, they immediately think of the movie Madagascar and the fun loving
role that is played by the lemur King Julien; similarly, when hearing the name Madagascar, many
think of the land of the lemurs. However, what would happen if there were no more lemurs? This is
a harsh but readily approaching reality of Madagascar today. Lemurs are known as the world's most
endangered mammals, and specifically the Simpona, otherwise known as the Silky Sifaka lemur, is
critically endangered. If treatments of Madagascar's habitat, specificity the small mountainous area
of northeastern Madagascar where the Simpona lemur reside, continue being treated as they are

Therefore, extinction is highly possible for these lemurs because if they become extinct in the wild,
there will be none left in the world at all.
One of the biggest factors effecting the Simpona lemur population is tourists. Although tourists
come to marvel on the beautiful agriculture and species that make up Madagascar, they are
unfortunately contributing to the decline of the Simpona lemur. As the tourist rates increase
destination resorts increase, which then leads to reduced land for wildlife. Tourists are wanting to
reside within the forest to be "immersed" in the environment and have the ability to see the wildlife
from the comfort of their hotels (Simpona). This has meant deforestation had to occur to make room
for hotels located within or right near the undamaged forest. As a result this leads to people
questioning why they would go to the extent of damaging the forests and reducing the population of
lemurs for the tourists. This is a result of tourism having a major role in the economy. Tourism is a
crucial part of Madagascar's economy and without tourism the economy would plummet. This
country has become so reliant on attracting tourists that it has become one of its biggest forms of
income (WWF – Endangered Lemur Fights for Survival in Madagascar). Due to tourists being
interested in the island's biodiversity Madagascar has attracted visitors for various reasons ranging
from family vacations to scientific research. However, the main

A Research Study On Primate Conservation
Primate conservation has long been a topic of debate, reliant most heavily on the struggle to provide
the necessary resources to combat the declining rate of population growth among various species.
Orangutans in particular, both Sumatran and Bornean, have experienced a rapid drop in their free–
living populations. With an estimate of only 27,000 left in the wild, questions have been raised over
what selective pressures are impacting the steady decline of these animals existence. While hunting
and poaching have been identified as contributing factors, habitat loss primarily takes center stage in
their demise. Conservation efforts have been made and continue to be somewhat successful,

They also consume a wide variety of other food sources including leaves, seeds, pith, fungi, honey,
termites, and even small mammals. Orangutans are known to spend nearly 95% of their daily
activity budget feeding, resting, and traveling. In fact their day ranges can vary between .056 and
1.9 miles. Likewise, the proportion of their day ranges is directly related to their home ranges.
Because orangutans are so well adapted for the ecological niche they occupy, it is understandable
why their populations suffer when their habitat is destroyed. In fact, in the last 20 years orangutans
have lost nearly 80% of their natural habitat largely due to deforestation. Between the years of 1999
and 2006 roughly 55% of that deforestation was due to the expansion of the palm oil industry.
Furthermore, Indonesia and Malaysia combined account for nearly 87% of the global output of palm
oil with Indonesia generating about 18.7 and Malaysia 17.4 million tons a year. When considering
these statistics, it raises questions about why this industry is seemingly more relevant than
conserving natural resources and more importantly protecting an invaluable species of ape from
extinction. To answer this question, it might be helpful to consider how the vast majority views the
palm oil industry by comparison to the orangutans in terms of economics. Palm oil is a lucrative
business that generates billions of dollars a year. It is

residents, and habitats of an area. It includes animals, plants, microorganisms, trees, water and
people. Everything that lives in that specific ecosystem is reliant on the other elements of that
ecological society. Oceans are considered ecosystems due to the plant life supporting the animal life
and also the animal life supporting the plant life. The earth's marine waters cover two– thirds of its
surface making marine ecosystem the largest of its aquatic ecosystems. In this paper we will identify

Research traces the increase in damage done to the marine ecosystem back from 150 to 300 years
ago and it has only increased since then. The growth in population can also cause effects in the loss
or harm of wild species. In the early 1900's most mammals, birds, salmon, tuna, sharks and reptiles
were depleted, and continued to decline by 1950 as the demand grew for different resources. The
International Union for Conservation has a record of ocean animals that are on the "Red List". This
list has 620 species of marine animals listed on it and these animals are in danger of becoming
extinct. This should show the human population that we need to work harder to put in a greater
effort in protecting our oceans against pollution and overfishing. Strategies and techniques for
marine ecosystem conservation would be setting up protected areas, as with marine protected areas
(MPAs) or Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas. Other techniques include developing sustainable
fisheries and restoring the populations of endangered species through artificial means. Another focus
of conservationists is on curtailing human activities that are detrimental to either marine ecosystems
or species through policy, techniques such as fishing quotas, like those set up by the Northwest
Atlantic Fisheries Organization, or laws such as those listed below. Recognizing the economics

The Conservation Of Endangered Species
Ever since the beginning of creation, species of animals have gone extinct. The most notable in
history were the dinosaurs and the dodo bird. Now, in recent years it has been the Bali tiger, West
African black rhinoceros, American cheetah and hundreds of others. In the last century, the rate of
extinction has been accelerated to an estimated level that is ten–thousand times greater than natural
levels. Currently in the United States at least one third of native animals are at an increased risk of
extinction and over half of those are federally listed as endangered. With the Endangered Species
Perseveration Act of 1966 passed under President Nixon, the government made its first move to
offer protection to endangered species. Since then, every president, including Ronald Regan, Jimmy
Carter and Gerald Ford, have included the protection of endangered animals, as part of their
domestic policy. With the passage of numerous restrictive laws and the spending of billions of
dollars, the question has been raised many times whether the government has a duty to offer
protection to endangered species. I say that the government should protect endangered animals. One
objector might say that for the amount of money, energy and time the government has spent to
protect endangered species, they have had very little success. The United States spends an average
of $1.7 billion yearly, money that comes mostly from taxpayers, to help run their expensive
programs. To show for it all, only 21

What Effect Do Polar Bears Have On The Environment
In recent decades, the global warming threat has captured the attention of the nation and the world.
While the main focus began with concentrating on the effects this long–term natural crisis would

entails prevention in order to help other animal and plant species around the globe. One such
organization is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which has played a major
role in the conservation of the polar bear species, one of the mammals most adversely affected by
the recent climate changes. As more research has been conducted regarding the polar bears,

Part of the original decision to list the species as threatened came from the fact that the critical
habitat of these animals had been greatly reduced due to natural and human activities. Critical
habitat is defined as the "area that contains habitat features essential for the conservation of a
threatened or endangered species and which may require special management considerations"
("Critical Habitat"). From this definition coupled with the results of numerous studies, it was found
that polar bears have suffered from extreme declines in ice habitats where they carry out the
majority of their lives. One study found that "ice thickness has decreased by 40% during the past 30
years and the average annual extent of ice coverage in the polar region has diminished substantially,
with an average annual reduction of over 1 million square kilometers" (Schliebe) meaning in a
comparatively short period of time the species has been subjected to substantial decreases in their
environments. This habitat destruction is the major concern for the polar bear species as human
activity is immensely increasing the rate at which their environments are destroyed. Not only does
recent research reveal massive decreases in the area of habitats which this species occupies, but it
also provides evidence that the lifestyles of these animals are being altered. With changing season
lengths and temperatures, polar bears

Natural Selection In Zoos
Many zoological establishments take pride in breeding programs. Through such programs genetic
diversity is currently upheld to a point where euthanasia is required for those animals who either do
not make the cut genetically, or are hindering the process of genetic diversity in some way. Should
zoos be allowed to continue to preserve genetic diversity regardless of the cost to its current
residence? Some people believe that killing the animals involved is unnecessary and poor practice
by the zoo. However, others have argued that without the diverse genetics the species would be
directly affected by heritable diseases. Zoological parks are a place where domesticated animals are
exhibited in captivity. The purpose behind a zoo varies, but they ... Show more content on

Zoos should be focusing on animals that already exist within their program. Genetic diversity is
important as zoos must do the job of natural selection or risk an extinction of an entire species. This
process of natural selection should be revisited as it causes much uprising and is not withholding the
promise of protection. To ensure that generations live and grow, disease free, new genes must be
introduced. Without these genes the outcome would be a small and likely corrupted gene pool. In
my personal opinion, I understand the need of genetic diversity within species as it prevents many
diseases. However, I feel that it is inappropriate for zoos to euthanise healthy animals that may
interfere with the genetic diversity. Such animals need to be either neutered or relocated, even if it is
not transferred to another zoological park but to a game park or national

Goals Of Wildlife Conservation

  • 1. Goals Of Wildlife Conservation The main goals of wildlife conservation are to preserve and protect nature so that it will be around for future generations of both wildlife and humans to enjoy. It is essentially the attempt to protect endangered animal and plant species and their natural habitats. In researching two different vertebrate species in the United Kingdom, one that has benefitted from a population increase in recent years and one that has recently seen a decline in population, the similarities and differences in the various challenges that they face can be investigated. The proposed solutions to improve the situation for the declining species will then be discussed. Species Recent History The UK population of the greater horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, has significantly increased over the last twenty years (Bat Conservation Trust, 2017). This recent success can be attributed to many factors such as the change in climate providing a more favourable environment for populations to grow. The increased temperatures in the spring season result in pups being born earlier in the year and a greater abundance of sustenance being available (Froidevaux et al, 2017). Females will mate from autumn until spring visiting various breeding territories in doing so. This enables the females that rarely change colonies, to strengthen their colonies by choosing the best possible genetic material to pass to their offspring (Rossiter et al, 2000). • 3. Wildlife Conservation in India 1. Meaning Of Wildlife Wildlife includes all non–domesticated plants, animals and other organisms. Domesticating wild plant and animal species for human benefit has occurred many times all over the planet, and has a major impact on the environment, both positive and negative. Wildlife can be found in all ecosystems. Deserts, rain forests, plains, and other areas including the most developed urban sites, all have distinct forms of wildlife. While the term in popular culture usually refers to animals that are untouched by human factors, most scientists agree that wildlife around the world is impacted by human activities. Humans have historically tended to separate civilization from wildlife in a number of ways including the legal, social, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The activities undertaken under the adage of WCS include scientific research, national capacity building, policy interventions, site–based conservation and developing new models of wildlife conservation. The Project Elephant PE in short was launched in February 1992. It is a central sponsored scheme that intended to provide all kinds of support to the elephant bearing states in India, be it financial or technical for protection of elephants and their habitats. Elephants, the gentle giants of the forests are much loved in India and this project was launched when their numbers started decreasing at an alarming rate. The Project Elephant in India also aimed to decrease the human–elephant battles and help in the welfare of domesticated elephants in India. Though project elephant was launched with much enthusiasm years ago, but it has still not led to as much increase in the number of elephants as it was expected. Wildlife conservationists state that the progress has been real slow and people in charge of the project are themselves not very clear of the causes of decline in the number of elephants. Project Elephant tries to ensure a free movement for the elephants and thus conserve large areas for them that are called 'elephant reserve range'. Wildlife Conservation in Sariska Sariska Tiger Reserve was created in 1978. The present area of the Reserve is 866 sq. km. In the pre–independence period, the forests ... • 5. Anthropomorphism And Forest Animals It can be suggested that Bambi's success in generating public support was a result of personifying the forest animals. Bambi and his friends were given voices, thoughts, and emotions such as fear, love, even curiosity that made them relatable to viewers. Anthropomorphism, by definition, is "the attribution of human characteristics to non–human entities" (Skibins et al., 2015). "The purpose of anthropomorphism in conservation is not to create fictional animal personas, but to create empathy toward these animals and their ecosystems by stressing that animals have many of our characteristics" (Chan, 2012). For example, when visiting a zoo, a mother may feel a special connection when seeing a gorilla comfort her baby. By generating this relationship, anthropomorphism poses a chance to increase public care for a species. Though anthropomorphism may have an indirect relationship, it creates relatability between species, and "[r]elatability is linked to concern, which can lead to an increased willingness to take conservation actions for a species" (Lloyd and Woodside, 2013). Furthermore, anthropomorphism may be applied in public advertising. Projecting human characteristics onto an animal, generating an emotional response, causes a product to become subconsciously memorable. Using such a method in advertising has been shown to create a link between the consumer and the brand. "The integration of explicit animal symbols... serves to activate and connect associations in the minds of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Review Of The Scientific Literature : Challenging The... Keneth Kim Dr. Lynda Haas WR 39C 19 July, 2015 Review of the Scientific Literature: Challenging the Conventional Value and Care of Canines Canines are arguably the most common companion animal for the household in the United States, while cats are the most common companion as a whole. As of 2012, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, a non–profit association established in 1863 and comprised of more than 86,500 veterinarians throughout various private and public practices, concluded through countless surveys 36.5% of households that own a pet, own canines (AVMA). In my review of the scientific literature, I will use scientific data to introduce the recent development of canine studies and understandings to challenge the conventional perspective of the domesticated household canine. Clinton Sanders, an emeritus sociology professor, specializing in animal–human interactions at the University of Connecticut, is well known for one of his books, Understanding Dogs. The canine–human encounters are one–way exchanges, lacking the intersubjectivity at the heart of the true social interaction. People interact with animals as objects. From the conventional perspective, dog owners babbling endearments to their canine companions are simply taking the role of the animals and projecting humanlike attributes onto them (Sanders)." In an effort to challenge the conventional perspective, I will visit the canine origin to find the beginning of the canine–human relationship. I will then ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Persuasive Essay On Endangered Animals In today's modern society, humans have made countless improvements to our way of life with the introduction of laws and ideas that makes life easier. But as we progress, we need to keep in mind that there are other living, breathing individuals that are affected by the choices of humans. Plants and wildlife also bear the burden that comes with changes in the environment. Activities that humans engage in can have an affect many times greater on wildlife. Activities like deforestation for housing developments or overfishing to provide for a high demand of seafood. Drilling for oil and natural minerals destroys the ground that plants use for soil to grow and, in turn, limits the hospitability of an environment for animals to thrive. Many ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, if we lose a natural resource, it's gone forever, and we cannot bring it back. Therefore, we must protect our resources while we still have them. Preserving certain animals also has a benefit for agriculture. Most animals act as natural pest–controllers. Birds eat insects that can be harmful to crops. These birds are at risk of danger because of the pesticides used by farmers which can poison birds, let alone diminishing the food supply for the birds. Using insecticides can also risk poisoning humans who consume the treated crops. Some endangered animals play a role in continuing the ecosystem for other organisms. Animals such as the endangered Rhinoceros are umbrella organisms, meaning that their survival guarantees the survival of other organisms below them. Rhinos use their dung to fertilize the seeds of consumed plants. This allows more plants to grow and to be able to provide for other organisms (Fight for Rhinos, 2017). The Asian elephant has a cultural and an ecological importance in the Asian region. Unfortunately, these beautiful creatures are endangered due to logging, which has destroyed the hospitability of their environment. Another threat facing all elephants is poaching. Humans hunt these magnificent animals for their tusks and meat. Elephants are important to the ecosystem because they control the ecosystem of their environment; the Asian ... • 11. The Endangered Cross River Gorilla With only two hundred and fifty to three hundred left, the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla roams the African forests while on the brink of extinction (Save Our Species). Africa has many populations of primates that are at the least endangered, and the Cross River Gorilla is the closest to extinction and the least studied due to the rarity of observing them. (Save Our Species). These gorillas are confined to small, mountainous areas that have been separated over and over again by fragmentation, furthermore ruining the needed social aspect of the groups and need for vast land (Imong, I., & Robbins, M.), (Save Our Species) The increased hunting and fragmentation of these Gorilla's habitats has caused a large problem with how the ... Within these small groups, the Cross River Gorilla has very predominant traits to keep them alive when almost extinct and facing a harsh environment (What's Our Mission). These gorillas have a considerably large body size and they also have quite large hands but short forearms; along with small forward facing eyes that are put close together on top of a large nasal region (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N,). Due to being so big they need a lot of nutrients, and in order to obtain enough food, they eat a large array of diets such as plants in many varieties, and fruits (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.). Since they live in the higher parts of the mountains near the border of Nigeria, the amount of fruit trees that exist are much lower than other regions, so they have come to rely on vegetation (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.). Since almost all fruit is seasonal, the primates must learn when they can eat one type, and when vegetation is important. (Etiendem, D., & Tagg, N.), (Imong, I., & Robbins, M.). The food they eat also determines how sexually successful they will be in the coming years. • 13. The Environmental Impact Of The Environmental Movement... Environmental Movement Report Before the 1960s, environmentalism mainly focused on conservation of resources and the wilderness and was apparent through Theodore Roosevelt's creation of five National Parks, one hundred fifty National Forests and about two hundred thirty acres of land set aside for conservation. In the 1960s, the environmental movement was really able to garner support as it was during many other movements such as Civil Rights, Peace, and Women's. Many consider the spark for environmentalism to be Rachel Carson's Silent Spring (1962), which exposed the harmful effects of pollutants such as DDT on the environment and the public. While minute amounts of DDT cause little to no harm to the organisms that are affected, as DDT moves up the food chain, it becomes more and more concentrated. A generally accepted value is that for each level up in the food chain, the concentration of pollutants increases by a thousand times. The effects of Silent Spring cannot be overestimated. As people began to become more informed about pollution, more people demanded that the federal government take action. The environmental movement then grew to encompass global warming, clean air, energy, the ozone layer, and also pollution. These concerns were vocalized in the very first Earth Day that occurred on April 22, 1970 and was established by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. A group of twenty million Americans, all coming from vastly different backgrounds, celebrated the holiday ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Tiger Conservation And Reserves Been Successful "If the tiger is saved, it will ensure the maintenance of healthy natural ecosystems, not just for tigers, but for everyone." (Freed)Are is the last line in the novel "Riding the Tiger: Tiger Conservation in Human–Dominated Landscapes.". Tiger conservation is a process that our world has been trying and carefully perfecting over the years, more so after tigers were officially put on the endangered list. Tigers are one of the more popular endangered species in the world and because of the public eye, the pressure for their protection is high. Mostly reserves are what organizations focus on because they are the best answer for the tiger. So, how what about our conservation are successful? How have they been improved? How are they dealt with on a social–political standpoint? In what ways has human efforts towards Tiger conservation and reserves been successful? Through understanding, research, experiments, and Trial– and–error Tiger conservations have become better and more successful, and humans understanding of tigers have grown in order to assist in this process. Enclosures have shown to have the most effective way of protecting tiger populations. The enclosures are closed of plots of land that humans overall cannot interfere with, except replenishing prey in need be and protecting the boarders. Enclosures are the best form of conservation because there is little human intervention, the tigers are still wild and can grow and live by natural ways, which will allow the growing ... • 17. General Knowledge : Giant Pandas General Knowledge Figure 3: Giant Pandas belongs to the bear family5 Giant Pandas are mammals that belong to the bear family and they have very special characteristics, which can be easily recognized. Pandas have a thick layer of black and white fur on their skin that feels like wool; it protects from the cold during winter in the cool forest of their habitat in south central of China . Panda bears are classified as carnivorous in terms of categorization, even though their food source is entirely bamboo. It is reasonable to infer this as they have well–developed large sharp canine teeth and strong agile claws for crushing tough bamboo and to protect themselves in the wild6. Though Giant Pandas are charmingly placid and gentle when calm, they can also be dangerous. Pandas are not docile, they were born to be fresh meat eaters, and fight if provoked. Pandas are not afraid to face strong animals; there are very few natural enemies that can threaten them. Animals such as Jackals, Leopards and the Yellow–throated Martens are usually the ones that and capture and harm baby Pandas , when they're weak and helpless. This is also reflected in the movie "Kung Fu Panda" to educate young children on animals in wild. In the plot of the movie, Kung Fu Panda's enemy is a highly endangered species (snow leopard). The main reason they became enemies is attributed to their requirement for similar habitat7. This research begs the question: "If Pandas are able to protect themselves so well, ... Due China's rapidly expanding population more and more of this land is being cleared Ailuropoda melanoleuca are members of the Ursidae (bear) family. They are the only species in its genus.Biogeographical data (including habitat information and species niche within the ecosystem) Giant Pandas live in the mountainous regions of South–west China. They live in temperate broadleaf and mixed forests. They are steadily losing their forest habitat due to China's expanding human population. They have been restricted to some 20 isolated patches of forest above 1,200m on six mountain ranges in south–western China: Minshan, Qinling, Qionglai, Liangshan, Daxiangling, and Xiaoxiangling. An analysis of satellite imagery has shown that Giant Pandas have lost 50% of their already vastly reduced habitat between 1974 and 1989. The major factors contributing the loss of habitat are the conversion of forests into agricultural areas, medicinal herb collection, bamboo harvesting, poaching and large scale development such as road construction, hydropower development and mining. Due to Chinas dense population Giant Pandas are restricted to narrow belts of bamboo forest no more than 1.2km wide and this small amount is continuing to disappear as settlers push higher up the mountain ... • 23. The Eye Of The Beholder : Do Biological Invasions Impact... In the eye of the beholder: Do biological invasions impact ecosystems on a functional level? Biological invasions are generally considered an environmental threat, out competing native species and increasing community homogenisation. Importantly though, invasive species also alter ecosystems, yet little research has focused on whether invasions are a threat to their functioning or services. This encompasses two main debates: determining whether invasive species alter ecosystem functioning and, if they do, whether these impacts are positive or negative. After reviewing current literature in an effort to resolve this controversy, it seems that in most cases, non–native species do alter ecosystem functioning. However, whether this change had ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact many studies suggest introductions can increase species richness and habitat complexity4, 5, though there is still a threat of ecosystem homogenisation6, and native species loss. Biological invasions are therefore understood to have a variety of effects, yet whether environmental processes will be altered remains unclear7. Ecosystem functioning may remain unaffected if the invasive organism performs the same role as the species that has been replaced, but the introduction of new functional traits or more efficient mechanisms could alter essential processes. If this is the case, the debate must refocus to assess whether these changes will be beneficial or detrimental. Eradicating non–natives to return the habitat to its natural state may lead to the loss of a functional trait that no longer exists within the native community, and so the loss of an essential ecosystem service. To make informed management decisions it is essential that we understand if, and how, biological invasions alter ecosystem functioning. This review aims to examine current literature to begin to resolve these two interconnected debates. Do invasive species alter ecosystem functioning? An invasive species that performs a role which already exists in the environment, by filling an empty niche or replacing native species, will theoretically have no impact on the specified ... • 25. Corporate Social Responsibility Portfolio Task Business Oral Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has the negative connotation of "putting in extra effort to make a difference". However... when large companies such as Pick and Pay makes it their responsibility to give back to the community it has the ability to change the lives of everyday, struggling South Africans. CSR can be defined as management's obligation to promote and protect the welfare of all stakeholders. (1) It is clear that Pick and Pay has chosen to make a difference in the community and support their stakeholders. "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."(1) This Chinese proverb describes the epitome of sustainability. Any company, especially Pick and Pay will ensure that all their social investments and efforts in social responsibility will enable the community to be sustainable and thus become self–reliant and self–sufficient. By teaching a community skills, Pick and Pay ensures that their investments will be maintained and that they will make a difference in the community. • 29. Endangered Wildlife Trust 1. Introduction In 2009, the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) was recognised as one of southern Africa's largest environmental conservation organisations. The non–profit, non–government organisation grew organically over the course of 35 years by broadening its vision to include "species, their habitats, ecosystems and the role of the surrounding communities and landowners" (Price, 2010). While this assisted in proving the EWT's commitment to its cause, this diversification put pressure on the limited resources available to the EWT. In 2008, prior to the financial credit crisis and the resulting economic downturn, the EWT decided to analyse, revise and align its Conservation Strategy, and core objectives and goals. It is extent of the variety of organisms present in different ecosystems. This can denote to genetic variation, ecosystem, variation, or species disparity (number of species) inside an area, biome, or planet. Biodiversity is pondered at three levels:– 1. Genetic 2. • 35. Biodiversity Is The Whole Collection Of Living Organisms Every ecosystem on earth relies on the complex relationships made between individual species which have evolved over millions of years. In this jigsaw framework, the loss of any one individual species has a significant impact on the remaining species and the ecosystem, thereby affecting its biodiversity. Per Merriam–Webster's Dictionary, biodiversity is the whole collection of living organisms, consisting of different species of plants and animals, that cohabitate in an ecosystem. This term collectively describes approximately all 8.7 million unique species, including every class of bacteria, virus, plant, fungi, and animal, that coexist on earth. As such, biodiversity and the conservation of biodiversity is extremely important to the human population and the health of all ecosystems. For instance, biodiversity provides food and materials needed to strengthen our economy. The selling of various plants and animals for consumption, entertainment/ recreation, and building purposes keeps countless restaurants and supermarkets in business today. Also, through the study of a vast array of plants and herbs, scientists have discovered cures to disease and have lengthened the average human lifespan. By doing so, society has increased its research efforts in medical herbs and in studying genomic sequences of various endangered species in hopes to uncover new treatments and even piece together mysteries of the past, for instance, using molasses encased mosquitos to examine the spread ... • 37. The Issue Of Natural Resources Management The next big issue in natural resources management will be concerns regarding urban sprawl and the conflict it is causing between humans and wildlife. Urban sprawl involves a city expanding beyond its originally set perimeters. This can occur as "edge cities" or smaller communities form around the outskirts of a metropolitan area. Ranges that were formerly pastoral begin having people inhabiting (Nechyba & Walsh, 2004). The wildlife that was previously occupying these spaces is disturbed. This either pushes existing wildlife into less urbanized areas or causes more frequent contact between humans and wildlife. Policies should be put in place in order to address the loss of habitats, interaction between wildlife and humans, and wildlife dependence upon humans. In order for policies to be instated, the importance of this emerging issue must be examined. The expansion of municipal regions is "one of the leading threats to the conservation of biodiversity around the globe. In the United States, tens of thousands of acres of wildland are converted annually to urban land uses, and nearly 80% of all Americans live in urban areas." (Moorman, 2007). Wildlife agencies need to educate the public on living with urban wildlife. There are several results of development beyond the cities on native wildlife and their habitats. "Urban sprawl and human population growth have clear and measurable consequences for wildlife" (Jacobson & Decker, 2006). More people are moving into areas ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This issue has left many asking why this is happening, and if there is something that can be done differently to protect them (Panda, 2013). I will specifically cover the following animals: blue whale, polar bear, tiger and the mountain gorilla. These animals are among the 16000 animals that are critically threatened with extermination (Panda, 2013). In fact, as indicated in IUCN Red List, approximately 22 out of a hundred of all mammalian class are likely to disappear in the next century (Panda, 2013). I selected this topic since I had not actually deliberated the statement previously, and was surprised after conducting preliminary research to establish the level of impact on our planet associated with the extermination of such large number of animal species. All that is known at this moment is what current literature work say in relation to the approximately 16000 endangered species (Panda, 2013). However, I do not intend to focus on such a large number of animals. Therefore, I will narrow down my investigation to focus on blue whale, polar bear, tiger and the mountain gorilla. • 47. Is Biodiversity Loss Important? Do I contribute to biodiversity loss? Is biodiversity loss important to me? Biological diversity underpins the earths structure and survival encompassing all plant animal and microbiology species (UN, 1992). Biodiversity is currently being lost at an alarming rate – with current rates of extinction being 100 times the background rate (Stork, 2010), which has consequent effects on other life on earth, disrupting eco–systems and environmental relationships. This raises social, economic and political issues, while concurrently human population increases urbanisation and demands on food and energy risking habitat and environment for species to survive. While conservation strategies work to try to alleviate this ultimately much of the success of these projects will ultimately rely on individual's involvement and support – the gravity of the situation is further highlighted with more extensive and advanced species documentation. This essay will consider two important questions in respect of my personal views on biodiversity and consideration of whether I contribute to biodiversity loss and if biodiversity loss is important to me. Do I contribute to biodiversity loss? There are many ways in which humans contribute and cause biodiversity loss and homo sapien dominance over most the globe (Johns, 2010) is considered a primary driver of the 6th mass extinction. • 49. Microbial Spatial Ecology : Old Dogmas Versus Current... Microbial spatial ecology: old dogmas versus current perspectives Introduction Spatial patterns and their associations with ecological phenomena is becoming an essential field within ecology, which is extending into the microbial ecosphere. Microbes are often overlooked, which is surprising as it is thought that they encompass a large proportion of the Earth's biodiversity (Torsvik, et al; 2002) and exist in effectively every ecosystem. Microbes include the prokaryotes, viruses, micro–Eukarya, fungi and algae and although microscopic, they can perform vital roles in the nutrient cycle (Beare et al; 1992). Similarly they can mediate the oceanic carbon cycle (Karl et al; 2012). Moreover a recent study located microbes in the biosphere that can affect the water cycle and their own precipitation through atmospheric transportation (Christner et al; 2008). As microbes can perform these crucial roles, you might conclude that research into their spatial patterns has been well documented, sadly this is not the case. In the 1930s the Dutch botanist Baas–Becking described microbial diversity as 'everything is everywhere, the environment selects'. Up until recent times this statement has been taken to be fundamentally correct and is supported by authors such as Finlay (2002). However criticisms exist over Finlay's conclusion, as he reasons that the global diversity of protozoa has been established, which is disputed by Foissner (2006). If humanity is to survive such an eventuality it must be ready to draw upon the earth's biodiversity for replacements. And while there are approximately 50 thousand plant species that could offer alternatives, this bank of resources is quickly thinning as various ecosystems are being destroyed. (11) Other services nature provides are more easily taken for granted. We depend on plant life to replenish the oxygen in the atmosphere, and on insects to replace nutrients in the soil. (31) These insects are especially vital, as they are part of the foundation of nearly all ecosystems. Without insects, plant species that rely on them for pollination would quickly become extinct, including many of the species we rely on for food. Following them would be species that feed on insects, as well as species which rely on vegetation as part of their habitats. Finally, as insects make the prime contribution to soil renewal, even non– insect pollinated plant life would begin to decline. (34) The result, according to Wilson, would ... • 55. The Effects Of Environmental Degradation On The Environment The human relationship to the environment has evolved over time as humans have made technological advancements and cultural changes. While some may argue that humanity is distant from nature, that could not be further from the truth. While the human relationship to nature is not the same as it may have been in the past, humans still rely on nature for their livelihood. Humans also have a strong impact on nature, and processes which occur in nature, through their actions. In the last decade, the issue of environmental degradation has become a topic of global concern and discussion. This discussion is threading together a narrative that helps the public – and scholars – better understand the human relationship to the environment. While this push forward in environmental agenda is a good thing, there needs to be an ongoing dialogue which allows for the understanding that environmental degradation is not only a risk to a certain biome, but all of the diversity that exists within a certain region – a good example of this being Papua New Guinea. The rainforest of Papua New Guinea are incredibly rich and diverse environments; the rainforest not only houses a wide variety of plant and animal species, but is also home many indigenous groups. By examining the changes in Papua New Guinea's rainforest throughout time, a better understanding of the complex and dynamic human relationship to nature will be achieved. ... Persuasive Essay On Endangered Animals The population of any species will naturally fluctuate over the course of many years, this is no cause for concern; however, it becomes a major issue when these numbers drop unusually low. When these numbers plunge below the healthy population range, systematic actions must be made immediately if there is any aspiration of saving the species. Some actions include, but are not limited to, declaring the animal as threatened or endangered and receiving the protection provided by laws enforced internationally. Once the threat of extinction is prevalent, a species is then considered endangered. Likewise, threatened is a term used to describe a species that is likely or close to becoming endangered. Due to various changes in the environment, animals all over the world are becoming progressively more endangered. In some instances these issues are irreversible; regardless of the fact, there are a variety of ways to help these animals return to a healthy population and avoid extinction. The three most effective ways to salvage the population of endangered animals consist of: seeking assistance from organizations that fight to protect and assist endangered species, enforcing more rigorous punishments for infringement of laws on poaching and exotic animal trophy hunting, and stopping the use of toxic substances in natural environments. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, extinction is highly possible for these lemurs because if they become extinct in the wild, there will be none left in the world at all. One of the biggest factors effecting the Simpona lemur population is tourists. Although tourists come to marvel on the beautiful agriculture and species that make up Madagascar, they are unfortunately contributing to the decline of the Simpona lemur. As the tourist rates increase destination resorts increase, which then leads to reduced land for wildlife. Tourists are wanting to reside within the forest to be "immersed" in the environment and have the ability to see the wildlife from the comfort of their hotels (Simpona). This has meant deforestation had to occur to make room for hotels located within or right near the undamaged forest. As a result this leads to people questioning why they would go to the extent of damaging the forests and reducing the population of lemurs for the tourists. This is a result of tourism having a major role in the economy. Tourism is a crucial part of Madagascar's economy and without tourism the economy would plummet. This country has become so reliant on attracting tourists that it has become one of its biggest forms of income (WWF – Endangered Lemur Fights for Survival in Madagascar). Due to tourists being interested in the island's biodiversity Madagascar has attracted visitors for various reasons ranging from family vacations to scientific research. However, the main ... • 69. A Research Study On Primate Conservation Primate conservation has long been a topic of debate, reliant most heavily on the struggle to provide the necessary resources to combat the declining rate of population growth among various species. Orangutans in particular, both Sumatran and Bornean, have experienced a rapid drop in their free– living populations. With an estimate of only 27,000 left in the wild, questions have been raised over what selective pressures are impacting the steady decline of these animals existence. While hunting and poaching have been identified as contributing factors, habitat loss primarily takes center stage in their demise. Conservation efforts have been made and continue to be somewhat successful, however, challenges and set backs continue to threaten ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also consume a wide variety of other food sources including leaves, seeds, pith, fungi, honey, termites, and even small mammals. Orangutans are known to spend nearly 95% of their daily activity budget feeding, resting, and traveling. In fact their day ranges can vary between .056 and 1.9 miles. Likewise, the proportion of their day ranges is directly related to their home ranges. Because orangutans are so well adapted for the ecological niche they occupy, it is understandable why their populations suffer when their habitat is destroyed. In fact, in the last 20 years orangutans have lost nearly 80% of their natural habitat largely due to deforestation. Between the years of 1999 and 2006 roughly 55% of that deforestation was due to the expansion of the palm oil industry. Furthermore, Indonesia and Malaysia combined account for nearly 87% of the global output of palm oil with Indonesia generating about 18.7 and Malaysia 17.4 million tons a year. When considering these statistics, it raises questions about why this industry is seemingly more relevant than conserving natural resources and more importantly protecting an invaluable species of ape from extinction. To answer this question, it might be helpful to consider how the vast majority views the palm oil industry by comparison to the orangutans in terms of economics. Palm oil is a lucrative business that generates billions of dollars a year. It is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Natural Resources and Energy Paper Natural Resources and Energy Paper An ecosystem is a connection among living resources, residents, and habitats of an area. It includes animals, plants, microorganisms, trees, water and people. Everything that lives in that specific ecosystem is reliant on the other elements of that ecological society. Oceans are considered ecosystems due to the plant life supporting the animal life and also the animal life supporting the plant life. The earth's marine waters cover two– thirds of its surface making marine ecosystem the largest of its aquatic ecosystems. In this paper we will identify the effects that a growing human population may have on that ecosystem's resources, including loss or harm to populations of wild species, discuss one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Research traces the increase in damage done to the marine ecosystem back from 150 to 300 years ago and it has only increased since then. The growth in population can also cause effects in the loss or harm of wild species. In the early 1900's most mammals, birds, salmon, tuna, sharks and reptiles were depleted, and continued to decline by 1950 as the demand grew for different resources. The International Union for Conservation has a record of ocean animals that are on the "Red List". This list has 620 species of marine animals listed on it and these animals are in danger of becoming extinct. This should show the human population that we need to work harder to put in a greater effort in protecting our oceans against pollution and overfishing. Strategies and techniques for marine ecosystem conservation would be setting up protected areas, as with marine protected areas (MPAs) or Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas. Other techniques include developing sustainable fisheries and restoring the populations of endangered species through artificial means. Another focus of conservationists is on curtailing human activities that are detrimental to either marine ecosystems or species through policy, techniques such as fishing quotas, like those set up by the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization, or laws such as those listed below. Recognizing the economics involved in human use of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. The Conservation Of Endangered Species Ever since the beginning of creation, species of animals have gone extinct. The most notable in history were the dinosaurs and the dodo bird. Now, in recent years it has been the Bali tiger, West African black rhinoceros, American cheetah and hundreds of others. In the last century, the rate of extinction has been accelerated to an estimated level that is ten–thousand times greater than natural levels. Currently in the United States at least one third of native animals are at an increased risk of extinction and over half of those are federally listed as endangered. With the Endangered Species Perseveration Act of 1966 passed under President Nixon, the government made its first move to offer protection to endangered species. Since then, every president, including Ronald Regan, Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, have included the protection of endangered animals, as part of their domestic policy. With the passage of numerous restrictive laws and the spending of billions of dollars, the question has been raised many times whether the government has a duty to offer protection to endangered species. I say that the government should protect endangered animals. One objector might say that for the amount of money, energy and time the government has spent to protect endangered species, they have had very little success. The United States spends an average of $1.7 billion yearly, money that comes mostly from taxpayers, to help run their expensive programs. To show for it all, only 21 ... • 75. What Effect Do Polar Bears Have On The Environment In recent decades, the global warming threat has captured the attention of the nation and the world. While the main focus began with concentrating on the effects this long–term natural crisis would have on the human population, select groups have worked to approach the topic in a manner that entails prevention in order to help other animal and plant species around the globe. One such organization is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which has played a major role in the conservation of the polar bear species, one of the mammals most adversely affected by the recent climate changes. As more research has been conducted regarding the polar bears, scientific name Ursus Maritimus, the conclusions have been shocking. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Part of the original decision to list the species as threatened came from the fact that the critical habitat of these animals had been greatly reduced due to natural and human activities. Critical habitat is defined as the "area that contains habitat features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and which may require special management considerations" ("Critical Habitat"). From this definition coupled with the results of numerous studies, it was found that polar bears have suffered from extreme declines in ice habitats where they carry out the majority of their lives. One study found that "ice thickness has decreased by 40% during the past 30 years and the average annual extent of ice coverage in the polar region has diminished substantially, with an average annual reduction of over 1 million square kilometers" (Schliebe) meaning in a comparatively short period of time the species has been subjected to substantial decreases in their environments. This habitat destruction is the major concern for the polar bear species as human activity is immensely increasing the rate at which their environments are destroyed. Not only does recent research reveal massive decreases in the area of habitats which this species occupies, but it also provides evidence that the lifestyles of these animals are being altered. With changing season lengths and temperatures, polar bears ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. Natural Selection In Zoos Many zoological establishments take pride in breeding programs. Through such programs genetic diversity is currently upheld to a point where euthanasia is required for those animals who either do not make the cut genetically, or are hindering the process of genetic diversity in some way. Should zoos be allowed to continue to preserve genetic diversity regardless of the cost to its current residence? Some people believe that killing the animals involved is unnecessary and poor practice by the zoo. However, others have argued that without the diverse genetics the species would be directly affected by heritable diseases. Zoological parks are a place where domesticated animals are exhibited in captivity. The purpose behind a zoo varies, but they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Zoos should be focusing on animals that already exist within their program. Genetic diversity is important as zoos must do the job of natural selection or risk an extinction of an entire species. This process of natural selection should be revisited as it causes much uprising and is not withholding the promise of protection. To ensure that generations live and grow, disease free, new genes must be introduced. Without these genes the outcome would be a small and likely corrupted gene pool. In my personal opinion, I understand the need of genetic diversity within species as it prevents many diseases. However, I feel that it is inappropriate for zoos to euthanise healthy animals that may interfere with the genetic diversity. Such animals need to be either neutered or relocated, even if it is not transferred to another zoological park but to a game park or national ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
