Every year, common everyday people remorsefully record their confessions for the police hoping to
barter for a reduced sentence. In certain cases, police and prosecutors use their power to pursue a
forced confession regardless of revealing the true perpetrator. Even worse, citizens frequently have
no knowledge of their rights, including a class of citizens who are mentally ill. Mentally ill citizens
are inept to many social skills in life and can be manipulated effortlessly. While investigators
aggressively pursue a confession, for an easily attainable conviction, of mentally ill citizens, they
lack the training necessary and use legal, persuasive tactics that deceives the citizens and results in a
false confessions. On the founding of the United States Constitution, Madison, a federalist advocate,
said, "Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society. It ever has been and ever will be
pursued until it be obtained, or until Liberty be lost in the pursuit" (Madison). The founding fathers
constructed the constitution as a set of tools, for the government and later the people, to seek justice

Instrumental Voluntary False Confessions
Instrumental voluntary false confessions are ones in which an individual comes forward on his/her
behalf and confesses to the crime. There is minimal to no pressure from the police because the
person usually confesses right away (Schwartz, 2016, p. 36). One reason an individual might
voluntarily confess would be because the individual wants the possible fame that could come out of
confessing to a big case (Pollack, 2017). Whatever the reason may be, the person falsely comes
forward voluntarily. An example of a confession such as this is John Mark Karr's case. Karr
repeatedly confessed to raping and killing JonBenet Ramsey, a 6–year old girl. Karr was arrested;
however, it was later proven that his story of the incident didn't match the autopsy of the child
(Ricardi & Simon, 2006). It was later determined that Karr confessed for the fame (Pollack, 2017).
Thus, his confession was voluntary false. Voluntary false confessions are probably the easiest
confessions for police officers because they don't have to coerce or threat the confession out of the
suspect. Another type of false confession is instrumental–coerced false confessions. This is where a
suspect has been interrogated for hours upon hours and confess as a way to escape the mania that
takes place in the interrogation room (Schwartz, 2016, p. 37). The confession comes out of the

One of the key components was that now, civil penalties could be assessed for failure to follow
FTC's orders, such as cease and desist orders, should the respondent ignore the order. Previously,
they would just be sanctioned. In addition, the amendment to Section 5 was to include unfair and
deceptive acts or practices. Prior to this passage of the Wheeler–Lea Act, it was the burden of the
FTC to prove unfair methods of competition. The Wheeler–Lea Act expanded on the food and drug

and few with staying power. There were also staffing issues from the 1930s to present. In addition,
at one point in time, when the FTC was tasked with enforcing labeling and identification, especially

FTC also saw other challenges such as scathing reviews by critics consistently accusing the FTC of
falling short. From 1933 through 1935, there were significant turnovers of leadership areas
including the Commissioner's position. Critics would claim that the Commission had become
complacent after the existing board remained in place from 1935 to 1945. (Federal Trade

The Importance Of False Confessions
Almost any person would at first assume that if another person admitted to a crime, that reasonable
doubt is gone, and that person is guilty. They think, "Why would anybody innocent admit to a crime
they did not commit?" Statistically, according to the Innocence Project, a foundation that stands to
exonerate the wrongfully convicted, says 23% of people who have been exonerated were in prison
for false confessions. It has also been proven that even individuals free of psychological issues and
of average intelligence are susceptible to making a false confession under the right interrogation
technique. False confessions are an important ethical dilemma and any person serving on a jury or
being accused of a crime, should be aware of the possibility.
Our Rights
According to our constitution, the government may not coerce confessions. We as American citizens
are given rights that protect us from illegally obtained confessions; the first is the Miranda rights
which were established to protect a suspect from unknowingly incriminating themselves and the
second is the voluntariness requirement that prevents coerced confessions from reaching the jury.
These rules govern the admissibility of a confession into evidence, but do not determine false from
true confessions.

A false confession, by definition is "admission to a criminal act, usually accompanied by a narrative

"It was me. I did it. I'm guilty." It's what every interrogator is waiting for and hoping to hear. Any
variation will do the job, as either is the heart of each and every confession. The main purpose of an
interrogation is to elicit the truth from a suspect that they believe has lied or is guilty of the crime
they're investigating. They are looking for a confession. Confessions are the most damaging and
influential piece of evidence of the suspect's guilt that the state can use against a defendant (Leo,
2009). It makes sense. People instinctively trust confessions. After all, why would someone confess
to a crime they did not commit? The mere idea that someone would admit to committing a crime
they did not do boggles the mind simply because it just does not seem rational. However, the fact
remains that false confessions do happen, and for a multitude of different reasons. This paper will
begin with an examination of false confessions in general, then focus on the different types of false
confessions, including what leads to their occurrence, and will conclude by discussing ways in
which false confessions could be avoided.
To understand false confessions and why they occur, one must first know what a false confession is.
A false confession is merely an admission of guilt followed by a post–admission narrative of a crime

Comparing and Contrasting of Coming of Age Stories Throughout the short stories, "A&P" by John
Updike and "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" by Joyce Carol Oates there are a
various number of similarities and differences between the two. Both Updike and Oates short stories
focused on the sexuality of younger girls and force the main characters to make a life changing
decision. Leaving their innocence behind, whether they like it or not, by the end of the stories,
Sammy and Connie have come into adulthood. Throughout comparing and contrasting the stories
point of view, main characters, parent involvement, antagonists, and ending of the stories, you'll
come to see that they are coming of age stories. Both John Updike's and Joyce Carol Oates' short
stories were published in the 1960's and focused on the transitional period of the main characters.
While "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been" had multiple settings, the main climax took
part at Connie's home, and in, "A&P", the whole story took place at the supermarket. While "A&P"
was told in first person, through Sammy's eyes, "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been"
was told by an outside view in third person. Although the point of views are different, they both
helped the reader understand the text thoroughly. Without "A&P" being told through Sammy eyes,

We hear in the news about police misconduct, use of excessive force, embezzlement, but one thing I
found while researching what I should write this paper on is the Wrongful convictions of innocent
men and women, that spend years in prison being innocent, and there is nothing that gets done till
it's too late. Some wrongful convictions are honest mistakes, but many times law enforcement and
prosecutors lose sight of the obligation of ensuring truth and justice, and are focused on their
conviction rates. As with any job, they are honest people and ones that just don't care and are
corrupt, this exists in the criminal justice system. One way to prove someone is innocent now is
through DNA testing, but even at all levels of a criminal investigation there could be misconduct or
mishandling of evidence, which then causes the evidence to become compromised.
One thing I notice is a lot of the misconduct is by the arresting officers or detectives that are

Crimes are committed every second of the minute, but out of the many that are, how many have a
conviction? How many of these crimes is the correct person held responsible and brought to justice?
"According to the Innocence Project, 25% of wrongful convictions overturned by DNA evidence

Part I On November 19th, 1993 Juan Rivera was convicted for the August 17th, 1992 rape and
murder of then eleven year–old Holly Staker, who at the time was babysitting her two siblings
(University of Michigan Law School). His wrongful conviction was the result of failures by not only
the public, but also law enforcement personnel and the criminal justice system, as we will further
examine. According to the University of Michigan's Law School, Juan Rivera's initial arrest came
on October 26th after Lake County Police received a tip from an informant. Rivera was then
questioned for four days and at the end of the fourth day Rivera falsely confessed to Staker's rape

went on to type a confession for Rivera to sign. After obtaining Rivera's signature, however, the

If a film fails to capture the theme it attempts to portray, then what is the film actually about? One
would hope a film titled Transcendence would provide a unique and original story for its audience.
Instead, Transcendence is plagued with a weak script and terrible acting. The film is difficult to
follow due to its lack of flow and the cinematography feels dated, filled with cheap CGI (computer–
generated imagery) effects and poor lighting. The solid cast and a promising new director
unsuccessfully captured the overall message of the script. In a movie where "love" serves as the
main motive behind the main characters' actions, one can't help but notice the movie itself felt cold
and emotionless. The plot twist at the end of the movie not only clashed with the main character's
actions, but it also failed to muster up a significant emotional connection to the audience.

confessions, one is when a suspect is completely innocent of the crime they are said to have

Jack London's To Build a Fire
In his short story entitled "To Build a Fire," Jack London portrays a bitter conflict between man and
nature. The nature in this story is the harsh environment of the Yukon Trail. London chose to use
nature as the antagonist, almost as a force working against the main character in his struggle for
survival. London accomplished this personification of nature by giving the environment many
human characteristics, by creating numerous things going wrong that really should not have
happened, and by foreshadowing the protagonist's fate all throughout the story.

This further personifies the environment as an antagonist working against the main character.
Furthermore, the personified nature continues to thwart the protagonist, impeding his progress
towards safety. It is almost as if nature is exacting revenge on the man for his arrogance in believing
he could prevail against the natural forces. When the protagonist attempts to build a fire to ward off
the cold, nature retaliates by extinguishing the one last chance he had at survival. It is almost as if
nature is assuring the reader that it is out to get the man, because everything that could go wrong
happened.
Also throughout the story, the main character is completely surrounded by warning signs that he
should turn back. While still in the village, a refuge from the harshness of the outside world, the
man realizes that the temperature must be colder than fifty below. "He knew that at fifty below
spittle crackled on the snow, but this spittle had crackled in the air" (London 118). In addition, not
long after leaving the village, he is already stricken with the beginnings of frostbite. When he settles
down to eat lunch, his exposed skin instantly goes numb, and he is forced to don his mittens once

is that intelligence gathering typically involves the time–consuming and laborious process of sifting
through piles and piles of information to identify suspected terrorists. This process often yields
many suspects but few confirmed terrorists. For example, in the two and a half years following the
September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, U.S. intelligence agencies arrested more than 5,000 suspected
