Pros And Cons Of Hypnosis
Hypnosis has emerged over the last twenty years as an extremely effective tool to treat everything
from depression and OCD to quitting smoking and improving self–confidence. Lack of self–
confidence is more often than not something developed during childhood and adolescence. It is
something that quietly and subconsciously informs all of our actions and perceptions. As such
tackling it from a purely conscious or logical standpoint is going to be very difficult. Those who
have tried cognitive behavioural therapy or CBT often admit feeling a bit disappointed at the
treatments ability to tackle these deep, nebulous issues of self–worth and self–confidence. This is
because they are purely based in the conscious mind. While CBT type approaches certainly have
their place – analysing your thoughts and feelings and trying to bring them into line with reality is
always a good idea – CBT has become overly popular as a quick fix solution to a myriad of
problems that potentially it just isn't well suited for.
Hypnosis on the other hand, focuses exclusively on the deep subconscious. Most of us are born with
a fairly high level of self–confidence – we haven't yet begun to consider ourselves stupid or fat or
unlovable. These beliefs, unfortunately, creep in incredibly quickly. Our understanding of ourselves
and our relationship to the world is determined in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By focusing on positive visualisations, enhancing the power of positive suggestion and rehearsing
stressful situations in a calm, controlled environment. For more severe cases, particularly those
accompanied by depression or other mental illnesses, hypnosis may take longer and may need to be
accompanied by talk therapy. I would also warn that those with a history of child abuse or who are
trying to uncover repressed memories should exercise extreme caution as doing so can be very
dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced

Understanding Hypnosis
I feel it useful to provide a definition of hypnotherapy as well as hypnosis before moving on and
answering this question of this essay. Linnenkamp Doyle writes, 'hypnotherapy is the use of
hypnosis to treat disease' something that she documents in her case study. This medical idea of
hypnosis needs further exploration in terms of how it has evolved and sparked debate amongst
medical and dental practitioners. Four very significant hypnotherapists are arguably Mesmer, Braid,
Esdaile and Elliotson, all putting emphasis on the medical aspect of hypnotherapy. Mesmer, for
example, devoted his 1779 27 Propositions concerning animal magnetism.
Closer to modern day, in his book Hypnotherapy, Dave Elman not only concentrates on relaxation (a

So, I will now move onto describing the psychological and physiological effects of hypnosis. Robin
Waterfield provides a valid list of this when he describes 'a high degree of rapport between the
hypnotist and subject', use of the 'imagination' and also the generation of 'expectations' within the
subject's mind. As we can see in Linnenkamp Doyle's case study of hypnotherapy as a cure for
blindness below, these expectations ideally relate to the suggestions imposed upon the subject of
hypnosis. The suggestions and expectations will often relate to factors such as the cure or severity of
a disease suffered by the subject or the lack of pain during dental procedures undergone by the
subject.
It is clear from the effects listed by Waterfield, that the psychological and physiological effects of
hypnotherapy are highly linked to the state of receptivity and power of suggestion in the subject and
hypnotist.
Relaxation is both an effect of hypnotherapy and part of its principals. In terms of the latter,
relaxation on the part of the subject of hypnotherapy facilitates the receptivity that we have seen to
be desirable for the optimal success of hypnotic techniques. Relaxation also constitutes a boundary
between hypnosis and meditation. As Waterfield explains, 'some studies have shown that both
meditation and hypnosis have similar effects on the autonomic systems: a reduced

What is Hypnosis?
Throughout history there have been, and are still many different perspectives and opinions of what
is hypnosis, its uses and functions. In order to clearly understand what hypnosis is, one must look
firstly into the history of hypnosis and the different concepts which have emerged over the years,
from as early as 50,000AD to the modern day, throughout different cultures.
After looking at the history of hypnosis, it will go on to describe the psychological and physical
aspects of hypnosis, giving reference to Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta waves, the four different brain
waves, indicating an individuals mental state, which brain waves comes in to play during hypnosis
and its relevance. Graham Wicks' (1985 Toronto's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Hypnosis is the deliberate inducement facilitated by one person to another/others of a trance state",
(R Waterfields, Hidden Depths).
Many people have been influenced by the media, some who are sceptical about hypnosis, and some
who relate hypnosis to what is seen on TV, putting thoughts into the hypnotised individual's minds
causing them to do actions such as dance like a chicken, or hop around on one leg. However of
those that understand hypnosis, know this is an induced mental state which allows you to access
your subconscious. Nevertheless, today there is still no generally accepted definition of hypnosis,
but it is accepted that hypnosis aims to induce a different state of consciousness, in which a person
may appear to be in a sleep–like trance, they have a heightened focus and concentration, while
blocking out other distractions therefore highly responsive to suggestion.
Having mentioned all the above, a hypnotised person can at any time terminate the hypnotic trance,
they make the choice to enter the hypnotic trance and have the choice to leave. They would never do
anything against their values while under hypnosis and they can not be left indefinitely in a trance
state; they would be brought back

Benefits Of Hypnosis
Have you ever thought of using hypnosis for another purpose besides fun? There are many
beneficial uses for hypnosis that have an outcome for a person. It seems to make things feel like a
dream when unable to accomplish these things awake and conscious. Hypnosis is defined as ". . . a
trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily
accepted by the subject"(Merriam–Webster). Hypnosis can have a meaning for many things, not
only for fun at an event where there is hypnotist to make people do enjoyable things and everyone
laughs at them. There are serious reasons to putting someone under hypnosis as well. While being in
deep hypnosis, eye movement slows down and it seems to be state of sleep that ... Show more

Which is the fact that one can stop what they are doing, but wants to keep doing it even though it
may not be what someone wants to do. The person being hypnotized has the inner portion observing
what the outside actions are and the outside body doing whatever is being told. The brain chooses to
listen and do what it is being told, but understands on the inside what is happening. If someone did
not want to do something while under hypnosis, they would know and not do something crazy they
would later regret. The subject's inner conscious would take over and deny the hypnotist directions
because they are not in a dream like manner. This connecting to the sociocognitive approach, a
person keeps their social role while being under hypnosis. They would stop doing something if they
truly did not want to do something and their inner self knows the limits of what is too much to do.
Also being under hypnosis, the person can recall people in their real life such as names while
following directions and pretending they are someone else that the hypnotist tells someone to be.
This theory is an opinion that a hypnotist gives hints to the person being hypnotized what they
should do or act like (Wade and Tavris, 2002, pg. 161) . This also states that people can not have
strengths that they do not when they are under, they just broaden up an imagination more than some
people think is possible. The theory dissociation explains that a person listens to the hypnotist and
then becomes what the hypnotist tells them, while the sociocognitive theory explains that someone
can get hypnotized and while they are hypnotized they know their limits. These theories have some
of the same ideas, but overall, do not believe the same

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of hypnosis is usually a magician convincing a
person to act like a chicken, however, hypnosis is actually an approach that doctors can use to treat
pain, depression, anxiety, phobias, and more. Hypnosis is a state in which a person appears to be
under a trance and is extremely concentrated (Brandt). It is not a new concept. In fact, hypnosis has
been used by the ancient Egyptians over 2,000 years ago (healing power). In the 1770s, the Austrian
physician Franz Anton Mesmer began to study hypnosis scientifically. More recently, it was used
during World War I and World War II to treat soldiers who experienced post–traumatic stress
disorder and other mental disorders (World Book). There are some ... Show more content on

It can be used to make patients less nervous before a surgery and can comfort them during recovery.
It can also be used to combat the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, or a chronic illness (World
Book). Hypnosis can also help the 25% of Americans who avoid and fear the dentist. After a five
minute hypnosis session, patients can be relaxed enough to receive novocaine and the treatment they
need inexpensively and without medication (healing power). Finally, hypnosis can help burn
victims. These people must have their dead skin removed every day for up to a few months. The
process is so painful that most patients must be given powerful painkillers that can be addictive and
can cause confusion, gastrointestinal problems, and breathing trouble. Hypnosis can relax the patient
and can allow them to go through the treatment without experiencing pain. The hypnosis session is
inexpensive and does not require addictive medication (healing power). Despite the evidence that
supports the fact that hypnosis is a legitimate approach to treating conditions, many graduate
schools have little hypnosis training in their psychology programs (Smith). This needs to change so
that more people can become trained hypnotists so the approach can become more widespread. As
previously stated, it would benefit hospitals financially and patients physically. It is free, can treat a
variety of conditions, has no side effects, and is not addictive. Dr. Spiegel believes that it could even
be used in place of addictive opiates. More time and money must be put into research on hypnosis
and its practice as it could save hospitals and patients money in the long run and could help a variety
of patients heal

Hypnosis Past and Present
This essay will be answering the question 'What is Hypnosis?'. It will describe the psychological and
physical aspects of hypnosis and will be discussing the role of relaxation in hypnotherapy.
It will give a brief history of hypnosis. It will look back over the century's to the many people who
have influenced the progression of hypnosis, to how it is seen and practiced to this day. It will
discuss the role of relaxation and what happens to achieve relaxation.
What is Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is nothing new, in fact it has been widely practiced since the early 1700"s
Most people are familiar with the term 'mesmerized', which in fact came from an Australian doctor
named Franz Anton Mesmer who lived from 1733–1815 (1)

Is is important to know that someone in a trance state can not be 'made' to do something which they
find unacceptable. Once under a trance state it can be terminated at any time by the 'subject' (11)
A session of hypnosis begins with a series of suggestions called the 'hypnotic induction' (12)
The hypnotic induction has several stages.
Firstly the preparation stage, whereby therapist and 'client' can discuss what the client is hoping to
achieve through hypnotherapy. Then the induction, where the hypnotist relaxes the client, and
focusses their attention inwards. Then the deepening of induction, which is where the hypnotist puts
the client into a 'safe' place whereby suggestions or instructions can be given
Followed by the reorientation which is where the client is brought back to full consciousness and
awareness. (13)
Many psychological and physical changes occur whilst under hypnosis.
Some of the psychological aspects are: Attention being focussed inwardly Outside noises are no

Shor Theory Of Hypnosis
Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, consists of a state of trance in which
a center of attention and a more intense concentration is experienced. Hypnosis is usually performed
with the help of a therapist who uses verbal repetition and mental images. When a person is under
the effects of hypnosis, they usually feel calm and relaxed, and are more willing to receive
suggestions. Hypnosis can be used to help people control unwanted behaviors or to help them cope
better with anxiety or pain. Contrary to what many people believe, although people will be more
willing to receive suggestions during hypnosis, they will not lose control of their behavior.
How does hypnosis arise? According to Ronald E. Shor, from ancient times, men of the most diverse
cultures practiced hypnotic and suggestive phenomena for the healing of the faith and for magical–
religious and other purposes. Shor explains that, in spite of that, it was during the Age of Ultra–
Enlightenment in the late eighteenth century, when a healing physicist of the faith, Franz Anton ...

phenomena, they were brought within the limits of science. In the second stage, attention was

parapsychological interpretations were eliminated in favor of more precise psychological
interpretations. In the presentation, fourth stage, the insights of psychodynamics and precise

Hypnosis : A Form Of Complementary Therapy
Hypnosis (hypnotherapy) is "a form of complementary therapy that the old power of positive
suggestion to bring about sub–conscious change to our thoughts, feelings and behavior. The process
itself aims to alter our state of consciousness in a way that relaxes the conscious part of the mind
while simultaneously stimulating and focusing the subconscious part. This heightened state of
awareness to reached using skilled relaxation techniques and allows the therapist to then make
appropriate suggestions" (Smith,2011, p.11).
In general principles of hypnosis are the mitigation of anxiety, discomfort and pain by suggestions
and imagery of relaxation and well–being, as well as distraction and dissociation (Gibson &
Heap,1991).
Over the past two decades, hypnosis has been widely studied and pointed out that it is most essential
characteristic, it also ushered in the present scientific time of psychotherapy (Montgomery, Duhanel
and Redd, 2000; Mott,1982; Perry and McConkey,2001). However, in the past studies unclear to

use of hypnosis generalizability. In fact, nowadays hypnosis accounted as more important in
facilitating psychotherapy and efficacy techniques for pain management (Montgomery, Duhanel and
Redd, 2000; Mott,1982).
Therefore, in this essay it will out illustrate out the development of hypnosis, then demonstrate

Mesmer's Theory Of Hypnosis

his theory in the medical practice of mesmerism of hypnosis. Hypnosis is the practice of using
visual signals that put the subject in a state that lacks mental presence but can still receive and
understand verbal cues. Aside from the comical uses watches were in fact used as well as the use of
abstract patterns of black and white to overstimulate the senses shutting down the independent
functionality of the brain, however the control of the subject requires specific visual and verbal
communications to fix the internal problems from the subconscious. Franz was a type of eccentric

Many types of mental and physical problems are the result of mental distortions,
hypnosis, by replacing mental distortions with useful and healthy associations, is able to re–
establish health in both mind and body. Hypnosis is so successful that it should be a tool used by
most doctors and mental health practitioners. Doctors can do more with it and would need to
prescribe less pills and see more results with their patients. Science has proved that hypnosis is in

His writings are what led to future research and development of hypnosis and the investigation of

methods are without doubt the fasted growing in the western world in the field of psychotherapy. He
was also one of the most prominent founders of neurolinguistic programming (NLP). He was also
very influential in the in family and brief systemic therapy model of the Mental Health Research

(Gunnison, H., 1990). He also was the founder and first president of the American Society for
Clinical Hypnosis, as well as the first editor of its journal. Erickson goal was to give back to their

Instead of saying, "Sit back in the chair, relax, and listen to my voice", he would say: "You can sit

Franz Anton Mesmer was a man whom had discovered the work of Renaissance mystic physician
Paracelsus at around 1766. He tried to uncover a relationship of astrology and human health or
regeneration, combining human trials and studies at around 1775, he later became increasingly
unpopular amongst other physicians of his time then renounced and left country after country
leaving a few followers that would later be known as "mesmerist" who would follow his footsteps
and perform studies on patients. After his death, 2 of his followers announced great discoveries that
consisted of sleep like states humans went through using his practices; those discoveries and
revelations would later lead physicians to consider the possibility of using mesmerism as an
anesthetic during surgery. James Braid another man who became interested in "mesmerism" then
began his own trials in Manchester at about 1841. He is known as the father of modern hypnosis
using similar methods as "mesmerism" he examined subjects and got behind the science of the
human brain and its reaction under trance along with how one is hypnotized in the first place. He

Hypnosis As A Type Of Mind Control
Hypnosis is defined as the induction of a state of trance where the individual is susceptible to
supposedly involuntary changes in behavior and physical state by the power of suggestion. It is
often seen by the public as a trick done by performers for entertainment, and is not often looked at
as a legitimate treatment. There are multiple cases of hypnosis being used as a treatment for physical
and psychological problems. Many of these cases have had successful results. The perception of
hypnosis and its role in society are the focuses of this essay. First, I will explain how hypnosis is
done. Then I will explore its different uses in the medical world. Finally I will go over real cases
where hypnotherapy was used. Hypnosis is more than a party trick, and has many uses in our
society. Hypnosis is seen by the general public as a type of mind control. A common misconception
about hypnosis is that you can be forced to do something you would not normally do. In reality, the
subject has to allow themselves to be hypnotized or it will not work. It is vital the subject of
hypnotism approach it with an open mind. Around 90% of the human population is able to be
brought into a hypnotic state. (Brown,1986, p. 3) . Hypnosis is a characterized state which allows
for higher focused attention, heightened suggestibility and vivid fantasies.(Wagner). John Kihlstrom,

Hypnosis And Pain Case Study
Introduction
When considering hypnosis and pain, it becomes important to first provide working definitions of
the concepts. Since both hypnosis and pain really heavily on patient assessments and self
evaluations, it becomes essential that all ensuing research is discussed on common ground.
First let us consider hypnosis. The Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis: Theory, Research and Practice
mentions two elements that should be considered when defining hypnosis: "'hypnosis–as–procedure'
and 'hypnosis–as–product.'" The first element of this definition 'hypnosis–as–procedure' involves
two necessary components: an introduction and the first suggestion. As described by the book, the
introduction includes informing the subject that hypnosis involves potential imaginative
experiences.
Case Studies One such example involves Harold Wain, the director of the Psychiatric Liaison
Service at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The case focused on a woman with a ... Show

He noted that hypnosis alone, as in the relaxation effect produced by the hypnotic induction, did
little in terms of pain reduction. This indicates that the key to pain reduction through the use of
hypnosis revolves around the suggestions given during hypnosis rather than the process itself.
Hilgard also demonstrated that the mind is capable of hallucinating pain, although it was less severe
than the pain caused by the normal nonhypnotic state. As this also produced consistent results, it can
be generalized that verbal reports can provide significant results in experiments involving pain for
waking, hypnotic, and induced hallucination states. During these experiments, Hilgard also
examined the changes of heart rate and blood pressure during the trials. Unfortunately, he was
unable to determine significant differences between the varying states. This shows that physiological
indicators of pain shouldn't be used to determine the varying levels of subjects'

You don’t have think to make your heart beat. It happens automatically because of your
subcon mind. In order to communicate with the subcon mind the hypnotist must put the conscious
mind out by inducing a trance. (Hypnotebook).
A trance is the Alpha State of mind where the subcon mind can be communicated with. When
inducing a trance, as before stated, the conscious mind must be relaxed or confused. By relaxing the
mind to a great extent, it forgets to think and falls into a sleep like state (called the Delta State
(Hunter).) By confusing it, it becomes overwhelmed by the situation and blanks out. There are 6
confirmed ways to do this. These include Eye Fixation, Progressive Relaxation, Mental Confusion,
Mental Misdirection, Loss of Equilibrium, and Shock to the Nervous System.
Eye Fixation is the type used most in the 1800’s and also the most popularized by
Hollywood. This is where you stare at an object (such as a watch) and loose your awareness of the
situation around you. Fact is, this method does not work on most people.

Research Paper On Hypnosis
A common question is, what is hypnosis and how does it work? According to the American
Psychology Association hypnosis is a therapeutic technique in which clinicians make suggestions to
individuals who have undergone a procedure designed to relax them and focus their minds
(American Psychology Association, 2016). Hypnosis is called hypnotherapy and hypnotic
suggestion. James Braid, a 19th – century Scottish surgeon originated those terms based on the word
hypnos, which is Greek for "to sleep" (Harris, 2016).
When the person is hypnotized they feel calm and relaxed. The therapist using verbal repetition
makes them more open to suggestions. The individual being hypnotized is conscious but is able to
ignore the most of everything going on around them. When being hypnotized the person excludes all
other thoughts.

Hypnosis essay
What I think about Hypnosis is that it is fake. These are the reasons why I think that Hypnosis is
fake. One reason is that if someone let's just say, tells you to act like a chicken while they
"hypnotize" you, you are probably not going to act like a chicken, but there is a chance that you
could act like a chicken. One of the reasons I think that hypnosis is fake is because like there is
proof that is real buts like what if behind the scenes they tell each other what they are going to say
and stuff and then they say bark like a dog so the person just barks like a dog. But if it was real

Also, it's a fact that not everyone is susceptible to hypnosis. Some people seem to possess a trait
called "hypnotizability" that, like other traits, varies greatly among individuals. To be successfully
hypnotized, a person must want to undergo the process voluntarily and also possess at least a
moderate degree of hypnotizability. Even highly hypnotizable people may not benefit from
hypnotherapy, and a single session of hypnosis usually does not produce lasting results. Often, a
person will have to undergo a series of hypnotic procedures to reinforce whatever constructive
suggestions may be given. The most frequent clinical uses of hypnosis include: breaking bad habits,
overcoming insomnia, recalling forgotten experiences, and as an anesthetic for managing pain. You
can easily test the benefits of self–hypnosis. Simply sit or lie down and get comfortable in a quiet
setting. Then, close your eyes and take in a few deep breaths, slowly, in and out. This places many
people into a mild trance and a state of comfortable relaxation. In this state, say some optimistic

Different approaches and practices are available to cure different issues of mental illness. However,
it is necessary to choose a technique carefully. Hypnosis refers to various techniques and procedures
that are used to encourage the condition of awareness that is different from the basic and normal

released from different limitations and restrictions that put emphasize on their thinking in daily

suggestion. Paraphrased by Heap, these words form the basis of the paraprofessional approach to
hypnosis
How Does Hypnosis Work? When you hear the word hypnotist, what comes to mind? If you're like
many people, the word may conjure up images of a sinister stage–villain who brings about a
hypnotic state by swinging a pocket watch back and forth.
In reality, real hypnosis bears little resemblance to these stereotyped images. According to John
Kihlstrom, "The hypnotist does not hypnotize the individual. Rather, the hypnotist serves as a sort of
coach or tutor whose job is to help the person become hypnotized While hypnosis is often described
as a sleep–like trance state, it is better expressed as a state characterized by focused attention,
heightened suggestibility and vivid fantasies
The hypnotized individual appears to heed only the communications of the hypnotist and typically
responds in an uncritical, automatic fashion while ignoring all aspects of the environment other than
those pointed out by the hypnotist. In a hypnotic state an individual tends to see, feel, smell, and

The Use Of Hypnosis And Its Effects On The Brain
Hypnosis has proven to involve much activity in the brain. It is much more than a person obeying,
there are underlying mechanisms in the brain that are still being studied today.
Evidence
Hypnosis has been used for a variety of reasons. Two categories it is used a lot in are addiction and
phobias. With the use of hypnosis, a person can connect the addiction to something extremely
distasteful which in turn makes the person not want to participate in the action anymore. Or
hypnotism can change the mindset of a person with an extreme fear so that they no longer associate
that fear with the object or action. Three studies were reviewed, a 2007 study on smoking cessation,
a 2006 study on dental phobia, and a 2007 study on needle phobia. A study by Carmody, Duncan,
Simon, Solkowitz, Huggins, Lee, and Delucchi (2007) researched different hypnosis interventions
and then chose the one they believed would be the most helpful and compared it to behavioral
counseling. Both of the treatments also had nicotine patches. The intervention was geared to
heighten the commitment to stop smoking as well as prevention. The hypnosis session included
suggestion and guided imagery. Their study consisted of 265 men and women that smoked at least
10 cigarettes a day and wanted to quit. 137 of those participants received hypnosis while 128 went
through behavioral counseling.
The hypnosis treatment group received two hour long face–to–face sessions provided by a public

Hypnosis In Psychology Essay
Hypnosis in Psychology
Throughout the history of this country, hypnosis has been dismissed as a form of gimmickry.
Contrary to this, for centuries numerous cultures have used hypnosis as a means of mental and
spiritual healing. Hypnosis is defined as an induced trance–like state in which one is highly
susceptible to suggestions, or commands. There are three commonly known methods of hypnosis.
Two of which, the authoritarian and standardized approaches, are generally considered non–
beneficial towards the subject. Meanwhile the utilization approach, primarily developed by Dr.
Milton H. Erickson, is the most widely used amongst psychologists today. The authoritarian
approach focuses primarily on the power of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The utilization approach assumes that each person is unique in terms of strategies used to create
his/her trance and, consequently the hypnotist's effectiveness depends upon how well he/she is able
to adapt his/her basic strategies to those of a given subject. Thus standardized methods are not used.
The approach further assumes that unconscious processes can operate in an intelligent and creative
fashion and that people have stored in their unconscious all the resources necessary to attain this
"trance".
The question thus becomes: How does the hypnotist bring the subject under trance? Instead of
standardized techniques, he/she has to use general principles to guide his/her efforts. There are three
defined parts of the utilization approach: 1) accept and utilize the clients reality, 2) pace and lead the
subject's behavior and 3) interpret "resistance" as lack of pacing.
The first principle–accept and utilize–was stressed again and again by Erickson and is the essential
theme of Erickson and Rossi'sHypnotherapy
(1979). Briefly stated, accepting means assuming and communicating to the subject that "what
you're doing at this point in time is exactly what I'd like you to be doing. It's fine; it's perfect."
Utilizing means assuming and communicating the attitude that "what you're doing right now is
exactly that which will allow you to do X." The process of accepting and utilizing is one

Write An Essay On Hypnosis
As researchers have discovered, recorded events of hypnosis goes back 2,500 years to the times of
ancient China and Egypt, and also to ancient Greece, where the physical remnants of the sleep
healing temple of Asklepios still exist. At the sleep healing temple, the physician Asklepios would
heal people using hypnosis; people who were wanting cured would ready themselves for their
appointment days before with purifying waters, baths, and fasting, and would learn to relax in a
peaceful calm reverie. When it was their time, they would enter into the Abaton, which was a dimly
lit stone room holding a stone bench called a klini, and the patients would lay on the klini, enter
their calm reverie, and wait for Asklepios to take away whatever illness or discomfort they had.

When people are hypnotized, the rumor is they enter a "hypnotic state," which is a state of
consciousness where the person's attention is focused and not on their surroundings. During this
hypnotic state, people are more ready to respond to suggestions. A hypnotic induction is a procedure
that is used to help someone to become hypnotized. An induction helps that person relax so they can
reach their hypnotic state. The difference between hypnotic state and suggestions is when you are
getting suggestions you don't have to be in hypnosis (but you can if you want). Suggestions is a way
to see the world in a different way; whether it be different through sensation, perception, thought,
emotion, or behavior. With suggestions, a successful response is where the effect feels like it is
happening all by itself and you are not making it happen voluntarily. However, while under hypnosis
or suggestion, hypnotic amnesia can take place; hypnotic amnesia is the inability to remember
occurrences that had happened while hypnotized. This is because the subjects could be told to forget

or legs as this can be construed as defensive. You should lean in slightly to the client as you listen to
what they have to say although not too far. You don't want to make them uncomfortable. You should
use encouraging responses where appropriate. For example nodding or smiling. Be very wary
though of judging your client as this may show on your facial expression as the client speaks. You

Hypnosis And The Psychological Aspects Of It
What is psychological hypnosis; rather it is what we have perceived it to be since we were young
children. Some think of hypnosis as swinging a pocket watch back and forth in front of someone's
face and they automatically fall into a deep sleep. Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood and
controversial methods of psychological treatment. The myths and misconceptions associated with
hypnotherapy mainly come from people's ideas about what we know as "stage hypnotism". (Barrett,
2001) Hypnosis can produce changes in perception, memory, thoughts, and behavior. Most often,
speaking in a calm, monotonous voice, suggesting that the person is becoming drowsy, sleepy, and
progressively more relaxed, induces hypnosis. Someone being ... Show more content on

Even though this technique seems simple, there are many factors to it. One factor is the client's
susceptibility and willingness to use the approach. Another factor is the experience and skill of the
hypnotherapist. The last factor is the extent of the problem and the severity of it. (Ryder, 2010)
Although hypnosis seems very simple and always worth trying because, there are no "down–side",
there are limitations to the technique. (Ryder, 2010) The first limitation is that one cannot be
hypnotized against ones will. Second, hypnosis cannot make one perform behaviors that are
contrary to ones morals and values. So overall, one is very unlikely to commit criminal or immoral
acts under the influence of hypnosis, unless of course one finds such actions acceptable. Hypnosis
also cannot make one stronger than his or her physical capabilities or perform new talents. Although
hypnosis can enhance ones physical skills or athletic skills only if, the hypnosis increases ones self–
confidence and concentration. (Hockenbury, 2012)
A hypnotic trance is not therapeutic in itself, but specific suggestions and images spoken to the
clients in a trance can alter their behavior. As they rehearse, the new ways in which they want to
think and feel they lay a base for these changes in their future actions. Barrett gives one example of
this technique. He states, "I often tell people who are trying to quit smoking that they will go hours

Hypnosis In Clinical Study
The question of how hypnosis plays a role in helping in the different aspects of life is a question that
is often wondered. Hypnosis can be used in a number of ways in medicine including rehabilitation,
psychotherapy, pain relief, etc.. Certain hypnotists have believed that hypnosis is connected to
religion. Hypnosis can even play a large role when it comes to surgery and anesthesiology and the
patient's reaction to the procedure. Cognitive behavioural therapy is connected to hypnosis in more
ways than one. The study of hypnotic relaxation therapy has just become popular in the past few

Hypnosis: The Ericksonian Approach
1.) How is Hypnosis done:
For most of the part hypnosis occurs naturally especially when a person thinks deep about
something that he desires. As per the source of Joseph Nicholson there are many ways of
hypnotizing a person of which the two most important ways of hypnosis were,
1. Ellman induction: In Ellman induction method different tones were used which make people go
deeper and deeper in their thoughts to spellbind them. Hypnotists found this method as very
difficult. (Nicholson)
2. Ericksonian approach: The Ericksonian approach was named after the famous hypnotist Milton
Erickson. In this approach the person was made to go into his deep sub–conscious mind using
analogues and non–agreeable matter. (Nicholson)
Benefits of Hypnosis:
According to S. Horowitz the benefits of hypnosis "stress induced disorder, pain management

The Pros And Cons Of Hypnosis
Have you ever wondered if hypnosis works on curing people with illnesses? Some people must be
asking how a hypnosis that we watch on television and in magic show can help with curing
illnesses? Does swinging a pocket watch in front of someone's eyes until they fall asleep or be in a
state of unconscious mind, could help in improving health condition? The answer is yes! Since
hypnosis now is very popular as alternative medical treatment and it has been proven by scientific
studies, people are looking forward to try this natural type of healing instead of having conventional
treatment. Medical experts started to use hypnotherapy as one of the treatment in the medical fields
around the nineteenth century. Based on Roy Hunter,Ph.D. from Alpha University and California

Furthermore, by focusing on their healing process through the power of mind, it may remove
psychological obstacles and strengthen their confidence to get better. It has been proven that
hypnosis treatment helps patient undergo surgery smoothly. A Ph.D. psychologist named Guy H.

surgery procedure to train their mind to focus on the good outcome. For example, patients that belief

The Modern Era Of Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy
The modern era of hypnosis and hypnotherapy began with Franz Anton Mesmer, the Viennese
physician. Mesmer favored an altogether gentler approach, and his devotion to his patients was quite
extraordinary. His breakthrough case was that of Franzl Oesterline, a 27 year old woman suffering
from what Mesmer described as a convulsive malady, "the most troublesome symptoms of which
was that the blood rushed to her head and there set up the most cruel toothaches and earaches,
followed by delirium, rage, vomiting and swooning". These symptoms were so severe that Fraulein
Oesterline moved into Mesmer's house to receive round–the–clock care. Returning to the theories of
his student days, Mesmer introduced a cure by using a magnet to disrupt the gravitational tides
adversely affecting his patient. He successfully induced in Fraulein Oesterline the sensation of a
fluid draining rapidly from her body, taking her illness with it. Her recovery after that was complete
and virtually instantaneous (Kirsch et.al., 1995). From a modern perspective, we can see that the
results were produced by the hypnotic suggestion of a fluid draining from the body, a wonderful
healing metaphor that wouldn't be out of place in a 21st century hypnotherapy practice. Even
Mesmer realized that the magnet had nothing to do with the cure. His system rested on the belief
that illness was caused by depleted levels of animal magnetism, and that these could be replenished
by the healer transmitting some of his own

Hypnosis: Going To A Different World
Going To A Different World
"The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his
attitudes of mind," an American philosopher and psychologist William James once said. Hypnosis is
a state of consciousness that involves being focused on one particular concept and voluntarily
following actions and directions that are given to people under hypnosis. While many people turn to
hypnosis for pain relief and memory recovery others go to get rid of bad habits and phobias. People
continue to trust hypnosis even though there are many cons to it, especially when trying to
remember memories. Studies show that when trying to remember a crime, the person could be
having false memories because all they are really doing is fantasizing. Being under hypnosis means
to shape the mind. It has been helpful in many cases but dangerous in others. Many people go to
hypnosis to get their minds off of troubles, while many others go to get rid of pain, both mentally
and physically.
Hypnosis has been around for many years, yet it is still a misunderstood practice that few seem to
fully understand. In the nineteenth century, "hypnosis" was originated ... Show more content on

am absolutely sure you've heard about Hypnosis. Either as being a procedure of treating wounds of

years ago hypnosis was a privilege of an elite of people who understood how to practice the secrets
and techniques of the art. They had the right information. Of course, they chose to keep the precious
info away from the masses.
As a hypnosis specialist for more than 10 years now, I feel I am able to write a little something
useful, especially for those who haven't yet dived in the magical realm of hypnosis!

Did you know you possessed certain psychic talents? Qualities provided to you from your creator
before you were given birth to! As you arrived on our planet however (as a new child), you forgot
all about it. This loss–of–memory effect was constantly enhanced as you brought up with bogus and
restrictive beliefs.
Okay! It's definitely not your fault. But it surely will be, if you do nothing at all about it now that
you know what went down. So, with hypnosis it is possible to uncover all those impressive psychic
(paranormal should you prefer) abilities of yours. Might be remedial powers or intuitive skills and
so on, you are a specialist in a certain field without being aware of it most of the times. But you can
uncover the whole real truth!
This is how hypnosis can certainly help BUT you must initially confirm to yourself that you really
possess those abilities. And you are not the only human being on the earth with those advantages! So
keep confirming and having faith and you will be led to where you wish to be (having all the right
information in your hands)...
And that's all to get started with Hypnosis!

UF217: Hypnosis
Everyone knows that if you really want to mesmerize someone, you'd better have a audacious
showbiz tuxedo and a pretty dark black Van Dyke goatee. And a cape, and a top hat, probably. Also
a "mesmerizing" spiral coin, or a pendulous pocket watch. "YOU ARE GETTING VERY SLEEPY."
Actually it turns out there's something to hypnosis, but there's two avenues: there is the "stage
hypnotism" that showmen and side–show acts perform, which is horseshit, then there's the "might be
something to it" variety of hypnotherapeutic "hyper–awareness." Thing about "real" hypnotism is
we do it every day.
But let's start with stage hypnotism–the "you are now under my spell" variety. The main thing about
this kind of "act" is that the participant is 100% just onboard for the spiel. The "magician" literally
just tells the participant to cluck like a chicken, and the participant will because he was told to, and
now he's part of a show, and who is he to let everyone down? In stage hypnotism, there's no
difference between pretending you magically influenced someone's actions vs just saying "do this
thing" and they comply. Compliance is based on the simple mechanism that no one want's to be the
spoil–sport. You get called up to be on stage, and now everyone is watching, and the entire audience
(and you) have shared expectation that you'll do what you're told. And so, you do.
It's a weird form of like...group–think, or public compliance. Sounds a little rapey, but it's all fun and

Use Of Hypnosis And Medical Practice
The Use of Hypnosis in Medical Practice
A literature review
Ashley Gowty 10207287
For centuries hypnosis was far from being part of the scientific world. But in the last couple of
decades its reputation has moved from that of cult practise to a highly recognised psychological
practice. Recently there has been an emerging trend using hypnosis in a physiological manner; this
review will look at how hypnosis is currently being used in the medical field. Looking at what
exactly hypnosis is and its therapeutic uses, it's use as a treatment for pain relief and reflecting on
how hypnotizable the general population is.
The literature reviewed is generally definitive in the nature of hypnosis. Bryant and Mabbutt (2006,
p. 12) describe it as " ... a state of mind connected to deep relaxation, narrowed focus, and increased
suggestibility. They also suggest that "Hypnosis is an intermediate state between sleep and
wakefulness." Bryant and Mabbutt's description is echoed by Cyna, McAuliffe, & Andrew who
apply the use of hypnosis to the clinical setting (hypnotherapy) and suggest that it is used to "to
achieve specific therapeutic goals such as the alleviation of pain or anxiety." (Cyna, McAuliffe, &
Andrew, 2004). Staff at The Mayo Clinic extend upon the defination of hypnosis by stating that
"Hypnosis is intended to help you gain more control over undesired behaviours or emotions or to
help you cope better with a wide range of medical conditions." (Staff, 2009). They continue by

Hypnosis and meditation. When I think of these two words very vivid, and perhaps stereotyped,
images come to mind. For instance, "hypnosis" reminds me of watching a hypnotist at the county
fair. I think of how he claimed to "randomly select" ten volunteers from the audience, and sat them
in a straight line of folding chairs facing the audience. Throughout his half hour performance he
"hypnotized" his volunteers and commanded them to perform odd tasks and act like various
barnyard animals. The audience roared with laugher as one man performed the chicken dance with
intense gusto. As on the other side of the stage, a woman ran around smelling the armpits of the
other volunteers. On the other hand, a starkly different image comes to mind when ... Show more

I also learned the method can be used to treat real medical conditions like high blood pressure and
insomnia. The article talked about using the techniques of measured breathing and imagining
calming surroundings. Telling you to completely immerse yourself in this scene, and stay there for at
least five minutes. The article claims that doing this exercise will improve stress management,
confidence, communication skills, performance anxiety, focussing, and clear thinking (SMS).
While the benefits sounded fantastic, and I did want to try it, I knew I would have a hard time being
able to do this exercise successfully on my own with my busy brain. With this in mind I went
searching for a video or audio recording to aid me and guide me through the exercise. I was
successful and found a video on YouTube titled, "Relaxation Hypnotherapy – Hypnosis for Stress

In the video, which was primarily an audio recording, a woman's voice speaks to you and guides
you through a hypnosis session to reduce stress. In the beginning she tells you to lie down and close
your eyes and to begin focusing on deep breathing. From there she guides you through relaxing and

point I felt very relaxed, as well as heavy and light at the same time. She then tells you

He believed mesmerism to be a "nervous sleep" and coined the word hypnosis, from Greek word
Hypnos, meaning sleep. He discovered that getting a patient to fixate upon something was one of the
most important components of putting them into a trance.
The French scientists were also taking the interest in the subject of hypnosis, and many
breakthroughs were made by Ambroise Leibeault (1823–1904), a neurologist Jean Martin Charcot
(1825–1893) and Charles Richet (1850–1935). Ambroise Leibeault and Hippolyte Bernheim (1837–
1919) were the first who asserted that expectation is a most important factor in the induction of
hypnosis and suggestibility is its essential symptom.
The work of another Frenchman, Emile Coue (1857 – 1926), was very interesting. He is most
famous for the phrase 'Day by day in every way I am getting better and better'. His technique was
one of affirmation and his idea was that the imagination is always more powerful than the will.
Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was also interested in hypnosis at this time. He was using it in his
work, but eventually abandoned it in favour of psychoanalysis. With the rise of psychoanalysis in
the first half of this century, hypnosis declined in popularity.
Milton Erickson (1901–1980) is considered the leading authority of clinical hypnosis. Nowadays
Erickson approach to hypnosis without question is the most effective.

course my dad's brother volunteers and is chosen. He then starts following the commands, tapping,
snoring, and dancing. Watching a six foot tall, 200 pound man dance in front of hundreds of people
may have changed my mind, and unless he was on payroll, hypnosis had to be real. So what is
hypnosis, what are common misconceptions and myths, and what are different types of hypnosis?
Today I will be answering these three questions.
Hypnosis is one to the most controversial and misunderstood way of psychological healing. It gives
you the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although the hypnotist isn't picking at random he's searching for the easiest, and most willing
volunteers, because his or her job is to put on a show. Also the way the hypnotist presents them self
is key. If they were to say they were a part–time actor and will pretend to be a hypnotist it is going
to be nearly impossible to hypnotize anyone. But if they say they are a famous hypnotist, who has
traveled the world changing lives, and who can hypnotize the audience in 1 minute, almost 90% of
the people will already be in hypnosis, according to self hypnosis. The last type of hypnosis I will be
talking about, which to me is the most intriguing form of hypnotherapy, is past life regression. This
technique helps practitioners uncover memories of their past lives. By uncovering these memories,
you are able to find out why you are the way you are. If you are having trouble in your current life
that has no direct cause, the goal is to find out the root cause of the issue from your past life or
incarnation. Whether you are strictly religious or not, past life regression helps you gain an
awareness that you are more than just a physical body.
Now that you are aware of what hypnosis is and the different forms of it, let's talk about common
myths and misconceptions people have about hypnosis. Number one, the hypnotist can make you do
something against your will. This is completely wrong, hypnotist only guide you to places, and if
there is somewhere you don't want to go you

Process Essay: Hypnosis For Cancer
Hypnosis for Cancer
Imagine being able to experience less pain and nausea as you combat cancer. This medical condition
is known as a multi–system illness. It involves every part of your physical, cellular and
psychological body. In order to combat the symptoms and manifestations of cancer, you must
address all of the ways that it attacks your body.
Do you feel depressed about your diagnosis?
Do you suffer from pain, nausea or other side effects from your medication?
Are your treatments more challenging because you fear and anticipate the pain they will cause?
Cancer patients have unique needs that are not always met by standard medical treatments. In
addition to the actual treatment process, you may want to have additional emotional support,
understanding and communication. It is normal to feel depressed or apathetic after getting a
diagnosis, and this does not help your symptoms. Hypnosis is designed to alleviate the feelings of
depression or apathy that you may experience. At the same time, it can help for pain, nausea and
other side effects. Medical research shows that using hypnosis can reduce the perception of pain and
the amount of pain medication that patients need.
Imagine:
Enjoying a positive outlook as you work through the treatment process
Experiencing less pain or nausea
Physically ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When you are anxious or depressed, it feeds into your pain level. By improving your mental
outlook, hypnosis can reduce the pain that you experience. In addition, hypnosis can limit the
perception of pain by working with your subconscious. Pain is experienced when receptors in your
mind receive signals from your body. Hypnosis helps to reroute these signals so that your mind does
not hear the pain messengers. As a result, you experience a lower intensity and duration of pain.
Since nausea and many other side effects operate on the same principle, you can also reduce the
severity of symptoms that you

Pros And Cons Of Hypnosis

  • 1. Pros And Cons Of Hypnosis Hypnosis has emerged over the last twenty years as an extremely effective tool to treat everything from depression and OCD to quitting smoking and improving self–confidence. Lack of self– confidence is more often than not something developed during childhood and adolescence. It is something that quietly and subconsciously informs all of our actions and perceptions. As such tackling it from a purely conscious or logical standpoint is going to be very difficult. Those who have tried cognitive behavioural therapy or CBT often admit feeling a bit disappointed at the treatments ability to tackle these deep, nebulous issues of self–worth and self–confidence. This is because they are purely based in the conscious mind. While CBT type approaches certainly have their place – analysing your thoughts and feelings and trying to bring them into line with reality is always a good idea – CBT has become overly popular as a quick fix solution to a myriad of problems that potentially it just isn't well suited for. Hypnosis on the other hand, focuses exclusively on the deep subconscious. Most of us are born with a fairly high level of self–confidence – we haven't yet begun to consider ourselves stupid or fat or unlovable. These beliefs, unfortunately, creep in incredibly quickly. Our understanding of ourselves and our relationship to the world is determined in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By focusing on positive visualisations, enhancing the power of positive suggestion and rehearsing stressful situations in a calm, controlled environment. For more severe cases, particularly those accompanied by depression or other mental illnesses, hypnosis may take longer and may need to be accompanied by talk therapy. I would also warn that those with a history of child abuse or who are trying to uncover repressed memories should exercise extreme caution as doing so can be very dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced ... • 3. Understanding Hypnosis I feel it useful to provide a definition of hypnotherapy as well as hypnosis before moving on and answering this question of this essay. Linnenkamp Doyle writes, 'hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis to treat disease' something that she documents in her case study. This medical idea of hypnosis needs further exploration in terms of how it has evolved and sparked debate amongst medical and dental practitioners. Four very significant hypnotherapists are arguably Mesmer, Braid, Esdaile and Elliotson, all putting emphasis on the medical aspect of hypnotherapy. Mesmer, for example, devoted his 1779 27 Propositions concerning animal magnetism. Closer to modern day, in his book Hypnotherapy, Dave Elman not only concentrates on relaxation (a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So, I will now move onto describing the psychological and physiological effects of hypnosis. Robin Waterfield provides a valid list of this when he describes 'a high degree of rapport between the hypnotist and subject', use of the 'imagination' and also the generation of 'expectations' within the subject's mind. As we can see in Linnenkamp Doyle's case study of hypnotherapy as a cure for blindness below, these expectations ideally relate to the suggestions imposed upon the subject of hypnosis. The suggestions and expectations will often relate to factors such as the cure or severity of a disease suffered by the subject or the lack of pain during dental procedures undergone by the subject. It is clear from the effects listed by Waterfield, that the psychological and physiological effects of hypnotherapy are highly linked to the state of receptivity and power of suggestion in the subject and hypnotist. Relaxation is both an effect of hypnotherapy and part of its principals. In terms of the latter, relaxation on the part of the subject of hypnotherapy facilitates the receptivity that we have seen to be desirable for the optimal success of hypnotic techniques. Relaxation also constitutes a boundary between hypnosis and meditation. As Waterfield explains, 'some studies have shown that both meditation and hypnosis have similar effects on the autonomic systems: a reduced ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. What Is Hypnosis? What is Hypnosis? Throughout history there have been, and are still many different perspectives and opinions of what is hypnosis, its uses and functions. In order to clearly understand what hypnosis is, one must look firstly into the history of hypnosis and the different concepts which have emerged over the years, from as early as 50,000AD to the modern day, throughout different cultures. After looking at the history of hypnosis, it will go on to describe the psychological and physical aspects of hypnosis, giving reference to Beta, Alpha, Theta, and Delta waves, the four different brain waves, indicating an individuals mental state, which brain waves comes in to play during hypnosis and its relevance. Graham Wicks' (1985 Toronto's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Hypnosis is the deliberate inducement facilitated by one person to another/others of a trance state", (R Waterfields, Hidden Depths). Many people have been influenced by the media, some who are sceptical about hypnosis, and some who relate hypnosis to what is seen on TV, putting thoughts into the hypnotised individual's minds causing them to do actions such as dance like a chicken, or hop around on one leg. However of those that understand hypnosis, know this is an induced mental state which allows you to access your subconscious. Nevertheless, today there is still no generally accepted definition of hypnosis, but it is accepted that hypnosis aims to induce a different state of consciousness, in which a person may appear to be in a sleep–like trance, they have a heightened focus and concentration, while blocking out other distractions therefore highly responsive to suggestion. Having mentioned all the above, a hypnotised person can at any time terminate the hypnotic trance, they make the choice to enter the hypnotic trance and have the choice to leave. They would never do anything against their values while under hypnosis and they can not be left indefinitely in a trance state; they would be brought back ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Benefits Of Hypnosis Have you ever thought of using hypnosis for another purpose besides fun? There are many beneficial uses for hypnosis that have an outcome for a person. It seems to make things feel like a dream when unable to accomplish these things awake and conscious. Hypnosis is defined as ". . . a trancelike state that resembles sleep but is induced by a person whose suggestions are readily accepted by the subject"(Merriam–Webster). Hypnosis can have a meaning for many things, not only for fun at an event where there is hypnotist to make people do enjoyable things and everyone laughs at them. There are serious reasons to putting someone under hypnosis as well. While being in deep hypnosis, eye movement slows down and it seems to be state of sleep that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Which is the fact that one can stop what they are doing, but wants to keep doing it even though it may not be what someone wants to do. The person being hypnotized has the inner portion observing what the outside actions are and the outside body doing whatever is being told. The brain chooses to listen and do what it is being told, but understands on the inside what is happening. If someone did not want to do something while under hypnosis, they would know and not do something crazy they would later regret. The subject's inner conscious would take over and deny the hypnotist directions because they are not in a dream like manner. This connecting to the sociocognitive approach, a person keeps their social role while being under hypnosis. They would stop doing something if they truly did not want to do something and their inner self knows the limits of what is too much to do. Also being under hypnosis, the person can recall people in their real life such as names while following directions and pretending they are someone else that the hypnotist tells someone to be. This theory is an opinion that a hypnotist gives hints to the person being hypnotized what they should do or act like (Wade and Tavris, 2002, pg. 161) . This also states that people can not have strengths that they do not when they are under, they just broaden up an imagination more than some people think is possible. The theory dissociation explains that a person listens to the hypnotist and then becomes what the hypnotist tells them, while the sociocognitive theory explains that someone can get hypnotized and while they are hypnotized they know their limits. • 9. Hypnosis Research Paper The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of hypnosis is usually a magician convincing a person to act like a chicken, however, hypnosis is actually an approach that doctors can use to treat pain, depression, anxiety, phobias, and more. Hypnosis is a state in which a person appears to be under a trance and is extremely concentrated (Brandt). It is not a new concept. In fact, hypnosis has been used by the ancient Egyptians over 2,000 years ago (healing power). In the 1770s, the Austrian physician Franz Anton Mesmer began to study hypnosis scientifically. More recently, it was used during World War I and World War II to treat soldiers who experienced post–traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders (World Book). There are some ... It can also be used to combat the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation, or a chronic illness (World Book). Hypnosis can also help the 25% of Americans who avoid and fear the dentist. After a five minute hypnosis session, patients can be relaxed enough to receive novocaine and the treatment they need inexpensively and without medication (healing power). Finally, hypnosis can help burn victims. These people must have their dead skin removed every day for up to a few months. The process is so painful that most patients must be given powerful painkillers that can be addictive and can cause confusion, gastrointestinal problems, and breathing trouble. Hypnosis can relax the patient and can allow them to go through the treatment without experiencing pain. The hypnosis session is inexpensive and does not require addictive medication (healing power). Despite the evidence that supports the fact that hypnosis is a legitimate approach to treating conditions, many graduate schools have little hypnosis training in their psychology programs (Smith). This needs to change so that more people can become trained hypnotists so the approach can become more widespread. As previously stated, it would benefit hospitals financially and patients physically. It is free, can treat a variety of conditions, has no side effects, and is not addictive. Dr. Spiegel believes that it could even be used in place of addictive opiates. More time and money must be put into research on hypnosis and its practice as it could save hospitals and patients money in the long run and could help a variety of patients heal ... Firstly the preparation stage, whereby therapist and 'client' can discuss what the client is hoping to achieve through hypnotherapy. Then the induction, where the hypnotist relaxes the client, and focusses their attention inwards. Then the deepening of induction, which is where the hypnotist puts the client into a 'safe' place whereby suggestions or instructions can be given Followed by the reorientation which is where the client is brought back to full consciousness and awareness. • 13. Shor Theory Of Hypnosis Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, consists of a state of trance in which a center of attention and a more intense concentration is experienced. Hypnosis is usually performed with the help of a therapist who uses verbal repetition and mental images. When a person is under the effects of hypnosis, they usually feel calm and relaxed, and are more willing to receive suggestions. Hypnosis can be used to help people control unwanted behaviors or to help them cope better with anxiety or pain. Contrary to what many people believe, although people will be more willing to receive suggestions during hypnosis, they will not lose control of their behavior. How does hypnosis arise? According to Ronald E. Shor, from ancient times, men of the most diverse cultures practiced hypnotic and suggestive phenomena for the healing of the faith and for magical– religious and other purposes. Hypnosis As A Type Of Mind Control Hypnosis is defined as the induction of a state of trance where the individual is susceptible to supposedly involuntary changes in behavior and physical state by the power of suggestion. It is often seen by the public as a trick done by performers for entertainment, and is not often looked at as a legitimate treatment. There are multiple cases of hypnosis being used as a treatment for physical and psychological problems. Many of these cases have had successful results. The perception of hypnosis and its role in society are the focuses of this essay. First, I will explain how hypnosis is done. Then I will explore its different uses in the medical world. Since both hypnosis and pain really heavily on patient assessments and self evaluations, it becomes essential that all ensuing research is discussed on common ground. First let us consider hypnosis. The Oxford Handbook of Hypnosis: Theory, Research and Practice mentions two elements that should be considered when defining hypnosis: "'hypnosis–as–procedure' and 'hypnosis–as–product.'" The first element of this definition 'hypnosis–as–procedure' involves two necessary components: an introduction and the first suggestion. As described by the book, the introduction includes informing the subject that hypnosis involves potential imaginative experiences. As this also produced consistent results, it can be generalized that verbal reports can provide significant results in experiments involving pain for waking, hypnotic, and induced hallucination states. During these experiments, Hilgard also examined the changes of heart rate and blood pressure during the trials. • 31. Research Paper On Hypnosis A common question is, what is hypnosis and how does it work? According to the American Psychology Association hypnosis is a therapeutic technique in which clinicians make suggestions to individuals who have undergone a procedure designed to relax them and focus their minds (American Psychology Association, 2016). Hypnosis is called hypnotherapy and hypnotic suggestion. James Braid, a 19th – century Scottish surgeon originated those terms based on the word hypnos, which is Greek for "to sleep" (Harris, 2016). With the use of hypnosis, a person can connect the addiction to something extremely distasteful which in turn makes the person not want to participate in the action anymore. Contrary to this, for centuries numerous cultures have used hypnosis as a means of mental and spiritual healing. Hypnosis is defined as an induced trance–like state in which one is highly susceptible to suggestions, or commands. There are three commonly known methods of hypnosis. The utilization approach assumes that each person is unique in terms of strategies used to create his/her trance and, consequently the hypnotist's effectiveness depends upon how well he/she is able to adapt his/her basic strategies to those of a given subject. Thus standardized methods are not used. The approach further assumes that unconscious processes can operate in an intelligent and creative fashion and that people have stored in their unconscious all the resources necessary to attain this "trance". The question thus becomes: How does the hypnotist bring the subject under trance? Instead of standardized techniques, he/she has to use general principles to guide his/her efforts. There are three defined parts of the utilization approach: 1) accept and utilize the clients reality, 2) pace and lead the subject's behavior and 3) interpret "resistance" as lack of pacing. The first principle–accept and utilize–was stressed again and again by Erickson and is the essential theme of Erickson and Rossi'sHypnotherapy (1979). Briefly stated, accepting means assuming and communicating to the subject that "what you're doing at this point in time is exactly what I'd like you to be doing. It's fine; it's perfect." To do this, I will look at what rapport actually is and how a therapist can achieve this through the initial consultation and through notation. This is so the client's rest gaze is not on you so they only look at you when they choose to. You should adopt an open posture. No crossed arms or legs as this can be construed as defensive. You should lean in slightly to the client as you listen to what they have to say although not too far. You don't want to make them uncomfortable. You should use encouraging responses where appropriate. For example nodding or smiling. Be very wary though of judging your client as this may show on your facial expression as the client speaks. You should also have your phone off or on silent and ask the client to do the same. You do not want to have any distractions or at least, try and keep them to a minimum. (Chrysalis Year 1 Module 3 Notes P2) It is also important for a therapist to know the difference between sympathy and empathy. Showing the client sympathy can be disadvantageous as showing the client pity and sympathy distracts us from actually dealing with the actual feelings involved in the situation and trying to resolve the issue or at the very least working towards a solution. • 50. Hypnosis And The Psychological Aspects Of It What is psychological hypnosis; rather it is what we have perceived it to be since we were young children. Some think of hypnosis as swinging a pocket watch back and forth in front of someone's face and they automatically fall into a deep sleep. Hypnosis is one of the most misunderstood and controversial methods of psychological treatment. The myths and misconceptions associated with hypnotherapy mainly come from people's ideas about what we know as "stage hypnotism". (Barrett, 2001) Hypnosis can produce changes in perception, memory, thoughts, and behavior. Most often, speaking in a calm, monotonous voice, suggesting that the person is becoming drowsy, sleepy, and progressively more relaxed, induces hypnosis. Someone being ... Another factor is the experience and skill of the hypnotherapist. The last factor is the extent of the problem and the severity of it. (Ryder, 2010) Although hypnosis seems very simple and always worth trying because, there are no "down–side", there are limitations to the technique. (Ryder, 2010) The first limitation is that one cannot be hypnotized against ones will. Second, hypnosis cannot make one perform behaviors that are contrary to ones morals and values. So overall, one is very unlikely to commit criminal or immoral acts under the influence of hypnosis, unless of course one finds such actions acceptable. Hypnosis also cannot make one stronger than his or her physical capabilities or perform new talents. Although hypnosis can enhance ones physical skills or athletic skills only if, the hypnosis increases ones self– confidence and concentration. (Hockenbury, 2012) A hypnotic trance is not therapeutic in itself, but specific suggestions and images spoken to the clients in a trance can alter their behavior. As they rehearse, the new ways in which they want to think and feel they lay a base for these changes in their future actions. Barrett gives one example of this technique. • 58. The Modern Era Of Hypnosis And Hypnotherapy The modern era of hypnosis and hypnotherapy began with Franz Anton Mesmer, the Viennese physician. Mesmer favored an altogether gentler approach, and his devotion to his patients was quite extraordinary. His breakthrough case was that of Franzl Oesterline, a 27 year old woman suffering from what Mesmer described as a convulsive malady, "the most troublesome symptoms of which was that the blood rushed to her head and there set up the most cruel toothaches and earaches, followed by delirium, rage, vomiting and swooning". These symptoms were so severe that Fraulein Oesterline moved into Mesmer's house to receive round–the–clock care. Returning to the theories of his student days, Mesmer introduced a cure by using a magnet to disrupt the gravitational tides adversely affecting his patient. He successfully induced in Fraulein Oesterline the sensation of a fluid draining rapidly from her body, taking her illness with it. Her recovery after that was complete and virtually instantaneous (Kirsch et.al., 1995). From a modern perspective, we can see that the results were produced by the hypnotic suggestion of a fluid draining from the body, a wonderful healing metaphor that wouldn't be out of place in a 21st century hypnotherapy practice. Even Mesmer realized that the magnet had nothing to do with the cure. His system rested on the belief that illness was caused by depleted levels of animal magnetism, and that these could be replenished by the healer transmitting some of his own ... Hypnosis: Going To A Different World Going To A Different World "The greatest discovery of my generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind," an American philosopher and psychologist William James once said. Hypnosis is a state of consciousness that involves being focused on one particular concept and voluntarily following actions and directions that are given to people under hypnosis. While many people turn to hypnosis for pain relief and memory recovery others go to get rid of bad habits and phobias. People continue to trust hypnosis even though there are many cons to it, especially when trying to remember memories. Studies show that when trying to remember a crime, the person could be having false memories because all they are really doing is fantasizing. Being under hypnosis means to shape the mind. It has been helpful in many cases but dangerous in others. Many people go to hypnosis to get their minds off of troubles, while many others go to get rid of pain, both mentally and physically. • 64. Notes On Hypnosis : Hypnosis UF217: Hypnosis Everyone knows that if you really want to mesmerize someone, you'd better have a audacious showbiz tuxedo and a pretty dark black Van Dyke goatee. And a cape, and a top hat, probably. Also a "mesmerizing" spiral coin, or a pendulous pocket watch. "YOU ARE GETTING VERY SLEEPY." Actually it turns out there's something to hypnosis, but there's two avenues: there is the "stage hypnotism" that showmen and side–show acts perform, which is horseshit, then there's the "might be something to it" variety of hypnotherapeutic "hyper–awareness." Thing about "real" hypnotism is we do it every day. But let's start with stage hypnotism–the "you are now under my spell" variety. The main thing about this kind of "act" is that the participant is 100% just onboard for the spiel. The "magician" literally just tells the participant to cluck like a chicken, and the participant will because he was told to, and now he's part of a show, and who is he to let everyone down? In stage hypnotism, there's no difference between pretending you magically influenced someone's actions vs just saying "do this thing" and they comply. Compliance is based on the simple mechanism that no one want's to be the spoil–sport. You get called up to be on stage, and now everyone is watching, and the entire audience (and you) have shared expectation that you'll do what you're told. And so, you do. It's a weird form of like...group–think, or public compliance. Sounds a little rapey, but it's all fun and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. Use Of Hypnosis And Medical Practice The Use of Hypnosis in Medical Practice A literature review Ashley Gowty 10207287 For centuries hypnosis was far from being part of the scientific world. But in the last couple of decades its reputation has moved from that of cult practise to a highly recognised psychological practice. Recently there has been an emerging trend using hypnosis in a physiological manner; this review will look at how hypnosis is currently being used in the medical field. Looking at what exactly hypnosis is and its therapeutic uses, it's use as a treatment for pain relief and reflecting on how hypnotizable the general population is. The literature reviewed is generally definitive in the nature of hypnosis. Bryant and Mabbutt (2006, p. 12) describe it as " ... a state of mind connected to deep relaxation, narrowed focus, and increased suggestibility. They also suggest that "Hypnosis is an intermediate state between sleep and wakefulness." Bryant and Mabbutt's description is echoed by Cyna, McAuliffe, & Andrew who apply the use of hypnosis to the clinical setting (hypnotherapy) and suggest that it is used to "to achieve specific therapeutic goals such as the alleviation of pain or anxiety." (Cyna, McAuliffe, & Andrew, 2004). For instance, "hypnosis" reminds me of watching a hypnotist at the county fair. I think of how he claimed to "randomly select" ten volunteers from the audience, and sat them in a straight line of folding chairs facing the audience. Throughout his half hour performance he "hypnotized" his volunteers and commanded them to perform odd tasks and act like various barnyard animals. The audience roared with laugher as one man performed the chicken dance with intense gusto. As on the other side of the stage, a woman ran around smelling the armpits of the other volunteers. He believed mesmerism to be a "nervous sleep" and coined the word hypnosis, from Greek word Hypnos, meaning sleep. He discovered that getting a patient to fixate upon something was one of the most important components of putting them into a trance. The French scientists were also taking the interest in the subject of hypnosis, and many breakthroughs were made by Ambroise Leibeault (1823–1904), a neurologist Jean Martin Charcot (1825–1893) and Charles Richet (1850–1935). Ambroise Leibeault and Hippolyte Bernheim (1837– 1919) were the first who asserted that expectation is a most important factor in the induction of hypnosis and suggestibility is its essential symptom. The work of another Frenchman, Emile Coue (1857 – 1926), was very interesting. He is most famous for the phrase 'Day by day in every way I am getting better and better'. His technique was one of affirmation and his idea was that the imagination is always more powerful than the will. Sigmund Freud (1856–1939) was also interested in hypnosis at this time. He was using it in his work, but eventually abandoned it in favour of psychoanalysis. With the rise of psychoanalysis in the first half of this century, hypnosis declined in popularity.
