Missionary Work and Its Evolvement in Christianity
In the church's tradition, there are traces of missionary activity and signs of an understanding of
mission. People, guided by the Holy Spirit, have lived their lives in a way obeying the will of God
and being close to Him. They talked about their faith and the how they know God. After the
persecution period, they then have the courage to speak and, hence, they gossip the Gospel
everywhere and this gossiping is aided by the power of the Holy Spirit which they received in
baptism. This implies that through baptism, every man and woman has the responsibility to share
the Goodness of Christ with or without words. But, as time went by, others found it crucial to stay
away from worldly allurements by staying in secluded places. They were inspired to stay close to
Christ and staying close to Christ is to shun worldly things. This marks the rise of the monastic
movements. However, these monastic movements are not mere movements but are missionary
activities in themselves because they portray a particular vocation of the Church. They considered
mission as moving away from the world and have more time in praying for all people and for the
church. Furthermore, this kind of missionary activity has extended even to the lay people, but not
living an ascetic life, instead, they proclaim their mission in their day to day experience with their
family – e.g. a mother's role is a mission towards the children and children towards mothers. There
was a strong change in the concept of mission and

Similarities Between John And Elaine Beekman
John and Elaine Beekman are missionaries God sent to the Chol tribes in Chiapas, Mexico. This is
where they translated the New Testament and hymns into the native language, they helped many
come to know Christ, they taught them how to read and write; and they also helped the sick and
needy. John Beekman was born with a heart murmur and he was restricted to many physical
activities, he had no interest for Christ and when he was older he read a book called The Wonders of
Prophecy by John Urquhart, which made him change the way he lived – he now had a purpose – to
follow Christ. He resigned from his job as an accountant at a telephone company and went to study
at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He spent many years learning Greek, pastoring, and ... Show

Beekman had a baby girl called Sharon, but the baby died four days later. The Beekman's used
Sharon death as a testimony to the Chol women as a means of comfort when they lost children. The
Chols also celebrated a lot of fiestas and celebrations but most of them were to pagan gods and the
Beekman's soon helped change them so they were worshipping God and thanking him for
everything that he had done. (For example, Christmas to believers and unbelievers were very
different. Believers would gather together to worship God and pray. Unbelievers celebrated by
drinking, dancing, beating drums, and screaming). Mr. Beekman trusted God because he told Mrs.
Beekman, "The Lord has given us a vision for the work among the Chols here." And he never
doubted God for anything. Soon enough God started working among many of the people in the Chol
villages. Soon the Beekman's were teaching them to read and write. Mr. Beekman was teaching
many of the boys how to preach and tell others about Christ. One Preacher boy said, " We do servico
for Christ because the Holy Spirit compels us by filling our hearts with love." He wanted to tell
everyone about God and His love for them and he did everything thing he could to preach to

The Cultural And Social Behavior Of A Society
The cultural means relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society. Therefore, when
doing world mission we must be able to relate to the culture in which we are ministering to. We are
not to forget who we are as far as culturally, but we are to have the knowledge of that particular
culture. For example, in Chapter 3 in our textbook, it speaks of Patrick, an English slave who
escaped from Ireland and later returned as a missionary. Being that he "understood the people and
their language, their issues, and their ways", served as a channel for the people to easily receive
from him. Being able to relate to a group of people, having the knowledge of that particular group,
and being able to understand the group in which you are ministering to is very essential in doing
mission work. You have to be careful how you approach people and when you do be conscious of
how you engage unbelievers. In conclusion, cultural simply refers to relations. On the other hand,
this particular question is referring to the negative fallouts (listed in the text) as results to decisions
missionaries have made overtime. Should those missionaries be representatives of all missionaries?
In my opinion, the spread of Christianity, as I refer to as the period of missionary work, has had a
major, positive influence on the world in many, many ways. Some missionaries may be looked upon
as bringing about negative change and some are looked upon as bringing about positive change. I
believe it

The Effect of White Missionaries on an African Tribe in...
The Effect of White Missionaries on an African Tribe in Things Fall Apart by Achebe In the book
"Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, we see the effect the white missionaries had on an African
tribe and the antihero Okonkwo. The main character Okonkwo is a tragic hero. Achebe depicts
Okonkwo as a Shakespearean hero with a tragic flaw, that tragic flaw is the fact that he will do
anything in his power not to be a weak man like his father Unoka. Okonkwo did what he did
because he hated his father and would do anything in his power to be the exact opposite of his
father. Unoka is Okonkwo's father, he is a very lazy man and has amassed many debts. Okonkwo is
very ashamed of Unoka and seems to hate him very much. Achebe states ... Show more content on

When the missionaries came to their land, people hated them, but when they started getting people
to go their way, the Ibo started to fall apart. The missionaries came and told people, like women
whose twins were left to die in the forest, that they don't have to kill their children the next time they
have twins if they join them and their religion. This made many people think that they took the evil
people out of the tribe but in fact they were gaining power by getting a lot of people to follow them.
For example, there was a girl named Nneka who had, several times, given birth to twins who were
thrown away. Achebe says, Nneka had had four previous pregnancies and childbirths. But each time
she had borne twins, and they had been immediately thrown away. Her husband and his family were
already becoming highly critical of such a woman and were not unduly perturbed when they found
out she had fled to join the Christians. It was a good riddance. This shows us the Achebe
understands and is not surprised when the women fled with Christians. We can see that because
when he says that her family was not "unduly perturbed when they found out she had left", this tells
us that he didn't really care about the people who left. He understood why they left but as he said it
was a "good riddance". As we see, it is highly

My Mentorship Bible Study
I was baptized as an infant and accepted Jesus as my savior when I was four years old. The Lord
blessed me with Christian parents and the opportunity to grow up always hearing the Word. We are
members of New City Fellowship of Fredericksburg. It is a PCA church with an intentional cross–
cultural vision. My family and I are very involved in our church. We actively participate in worship,
small groups, Bible study and serving where the Lord calls us. Personally, I am part of a small group
and a mentorship Bible study group for older teen girls lead by some of the older women. Before the
mentorship group, I was in youth group. This mentorship group has helped further my knowledge
and understanding of God's word.

We did so by helping the Ferguson family with their daily household chores as well as help the
residents of the Therapy Center with some of their jobs. We shared God's love by helping the
residents with tasks like picking plums, making jam, and helping them rebuild a wall on one of their
sheds. We assisted the Ferguson family in helping take care of their two boys and newborn daughter,
clearing and preparing their garden, making and canning pasta sauce, making a concrete driveway
and helping rebuild their shed. Because we were staying in the Therapy center and were very far
from any cities, we ate our meals in the nearby castle where we had a cook prepare our meals. Every
morning, during breakfast, we did a devotion and every evening, after dinner, we had a little
worship service, and sometimes the residents would join us.
This mission trip gave me the opportunity to serve others in a tangible way and has helped further
my servant's heart and want to do more for the people around me. It also gave me more knowledge
of what other countries are like and how many people need God's love and word. The trip also
furthered my knowledge of God's word and love and how to share it with others. I hope to go on
more missions trips in the future to help and assist others and show them God's love or even serve in
my community doing the same thing. It also gave me a desire to explore God's

Jonathan Goforth An Open Door In China Summary
Jonathan Goforth: An Open Door in China by Janet and Geoff Benge gives the account of Jonathan
Goforth, a missionary to China who ultimately had to put his life and the lives of his family in God's
hands, in order to spread the gospel to people who had never been reached before. Jonathan Goforth
was born in 1859 and was raised on a small farm in Ontario, Canada. At twenty–four years old, he
attended Knox College, with the intention of going into missions. While still schooling, he joined
the William Street Mission and managed to evangelize the poorest area of Toronto and even worked
in a prison, spreading God's Word to the people that nobody else wanted to work to reach. Jonathan
started speaking at churches around Canada and eventually ... Show more content on

In his last year of college, he was told that his class at Knox College was going to sponsor him
Rosalind in their mission efforts in China. After a rough voyage aboard the SS Parthia, Jonathan and
Rosalind Goforth eventually made it to Shanghai. After some deliberation, it was decided that the
Goforths would focus their efforts in the North Honan province of China with the Canadian
Presbyterian Mission. They stayed in the city of Chefoo for a period of time, however, to learn
Mandarin. From Chefoo, they moved to Pangchwang, and then on to Linching, each move bringing
them closer to North Honan. They moved to Chuwang, where they faced more challenges brought
on by the Chinese people's resentment of foreigners. The time that the Goforths spent in China
happened to fall during the same time as the Boxer Rebellion. This made life increasingly difficult
for the family. They faced trials such as nasty rumors, and the theft of many of their belongings, but
the family persisted nonetheless. In one instance, Jonathan was maliciously attacked and wounded
by bandits, who bludgeoned him with knives and swords, leaving him fighting for

Reflection On My Belief Of God
It's common to not notice the tiny blessings of each day. Call it luck, God, good karma, whatever
you want, but sometimes things just go right. Other times those lucky instances are so impactful that
we have no choice but notice them. I attribute these miracles to God, though I have not always done
so. When I began high school my belief in God was very basic, limited to the assumption that there
could be no other possible explanation for the world around me. This reasoning worked for a while,
but then suddenly as if a switch had been flipped, it just didn't provide me with the same peace it
once had. The faith I now have comes from sma experiences where I noticed God's hand in my life.
One such experience was a day trip my best friend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking around I saw those near me begin to take notice of the two young girls, dressed up for their
day in the city, painfully out of place in a neighborhood where the overall crime rate is two hundred
and fourteen percent higher than the national average. Music blared from the speakers of a car
parked nearby, though not loud enough to cover the overlapping voices of those socializing.Closest
to us a boy about our age stood cursing into a phone. Now It 's not my intention mean to stereotype
or make it sound like I have anything against Anacostia, but in that moment it was foreign and
unknown. A Sinking feeling settled in and I realized I had no idea which direction this chair was in,
nor how far.THUMP THUMP, THUMP THUMP, my heartbeat. Faster and faster until a tingling
feeling reached my hands, numbing them. I sensed Jordan was just as uncomfortable. Without
realizing it she had taken a step closer, leaving us standing practically on top of each other. Before I
could, she turned saying, "You know I don 't really want to see that chair sculpture anymore."
Agreeing with her I shakily responded with our now infamous inside joke,"Yeah, no chair is worth
it." What happened next was the first miracle of the day. We started out with a brisk walk to the
platform and soon it evolved into a quick jog, even then we just barely made it in as the doors were
closing. My heart was still racing, though not from the run. I stood

The Contribution Of David Gates
David gates is an aviator, nurse, computer specialist, he uses these skills as a medical missionary in
South America. Previously he used his nursing skills along with his skills in aviation as an entering
wedge into many countries where they were reluctant to allow Christians and as a result the places
were much more open for church work. After coming back form the mission field, he started a
mission foundation, Gospel Missions International. His life is one of continual service and he used
his skills to change many peoples lives, not only on the physical level but also on the spiritual level.
His testimony has influenced my life ever since I was a child. And his experiences of combining
medical ministry with aviation has inspired me to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All through his life, David Gates didn 't stop being a missionary. He now uses his testimony to
inspire others through speaking and through his book to follow in his footsteps and to become
missionaries. He also started a ministry that trains people who have a desire to one day become a
medical missionary, thus ensuring that this work does not end. David Gates has inspired countless
people to become a missionary. But he didn 't just stop at inspiring them. He also started a mission
foundation called Global Missions International. His foundation helps dreams become realities for
many missionaries. Through Gospel Missions International, he is supporting people like DJ and Jodi
Knott, and Herman and Saray Gonzalez and others who are working in South America as missionary
pilot nurses. They are changing the world one person at a time and many times beginning with the
physical needs of the people.
From research, it didn 't appear that David Gates had any direct influence on Adventist nursing, but
he did use nursing to open the door in many countries for Adventists to be able to witness. And now,
through his ministry, he is still is able to send missionaries to other countries that previously would
not have been open for them had it not been for medical missionary work. "Today GMI directs and
supports medical aviation programs in Guyana, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Norway, reaching people in

Shamanism In Alaska Research Paper
Christian mission in Alaska dates back to around 1794; it might have been a little before this time
due to the Russian fur trade, but it was in 1794 when the first Russian Orthodox missionaries came.
The spread of Christianity in Alaska continued to spread over the years. Alaska Mission for Christ is
an organization that leads many mission teams in different villages of Alaska today. Before
Christianity came to Alaska, Shamanism was a huge part of the Native Alaskan culture. This paper
will discuss Shamanism and its impact, the start of Christian missions in Alaska, as well as, Alaska
Mission for Christ and its work with Christian Mission today. Before Christianity was introduced to
Alaska, the natives believed and practiced Shamanism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1794, the first Russian Orthodox missionaries came to Alaska to begin further sharing
Christianity to the natives. "Many of the Orthodox missionaries defended Alaska Native people. The
tsar in St. Petersburg had always prohibited the poor treatment of Natives, but many fur traders
ignored his orders." Of the missionaries who defended the natives, "none [were] more important
[than] Ioann Veniaminov, later named Bishop Innocent, the first Orthodox bishop in Alaska" (Alaska
Humanities Forum). Veniaminov worked to translate the Russian Liturgical into the vernacular of
the people and continued to learn about their culture, he also helped out with giving vaccinations
when there was a smallpox epidemic. Veniaminov cared for the natives and took care of them and
learned their culture and language instead of forcing his upon them. In 1870, a Presbyterian
missionary came to Alaska. This missionary's name was Sheldon Jackson and not only shared
Christianity with the natives, but was also heavily involved in their educational programs. "Jackson
had no problem in mixing religion with education when it came to establishing churches in Alaska,"
converting the natives and starting schools. "Jackson actively discouraged the use of indigenous
languages, traditional cultures and spiritualties" (Andersen). Jackson is a complete 180 compared to
Veniaminov. "Missionaries were paid from government educational funds to run their schools, while
the goal of their teaching was not only to educate but to evangelize." Even though Jackson's actions
did not seem the best, "the effects of [his] allocations to Protestant missionary work is [still] evident
by thriving Protestant churches of different kinds in villages relatively close together" (Andersen).
These were two main groups in the beginning of the spread of Christianity in

Christian Mission Book Review Essay
Christian Mission Book Review Part two begins with David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary, and
a professional doctor. He was very interested in exploration and his main goal was to stop
Portuguese and Arab slave trade, he believed in human self–worth. He got his men and his supplies
and started his voyage to Africa to map Africa, he was successful at mapping most of Zambezi.
Livingstone was accused of not being a "real" missionary and he was too political but he always
made sure he was working with God in mind. Livingstone died at the age of 60 in 1873 defending
the African's freedom. His people cut out his heart and buried it, the rest of his body was mummified
and taken to Westminster Abbey to be buried, as he wished. A statue was built in his honor with the
base reading, "Missionary, Explorer, Liberator". Livingstone is one example of how much political
and economic power a Christian missionary can have. He also encouraged the work of the Jesuits in
China. The western power and missionaries have created bad names for the social/cultural changes
or for being connected with colonialism, imperialism, westernity, and modernity mostly by the
missionaries. Some say that Christianity has challenged or strengthened the local power. "Scientific
racism" first came up in the 1850s Joseph–Arthur de Gobineu's book called Essi sur l'inegalite des
races humanines. He believed that the African and Asian people could be a part of the Christian
religion or culture because

I Am Eternally Grateful For All
In the past four years of my life, I have encountered many experiences that many people in today's
society, will not be able to experience for themselves. For that I am eternally grateful for all the
support I have received for all that I have done. Who can say that they were a Princess for a year and
traveled all over the western Wisconsin to represent their town in parades and events? Who can say
that when they were 13 years old, they got to travel across the country with their church group and
do mission work in Seattle, Washington by bus? Who can say that they traveled to New Jersey for

It took a total of four states to reach our destination. The week spent with my mission group was one
of the most emotionally challenging weeks I have encountered. Seeing others have nothing
compared to what you do, is one of the most shocking things that you can experience. Being face to
face with those who live in tents and eat one meal a day shows you how good some of us have it.
Our mission group attended a program called "Tent City." This is an area where those who don't
have the money to keep their homes, live. These people set up an area just for tents that are shared
with three to five people. We got to serve these people by feeding them a whole dinner. While we
were there we listened to the stories that they had to share. We learned about their previous lives and
how they ended up here. This was the day that reality had hit me. I lived by taking advantage and
never thought about how others lived. This was also that day that changed the way I lived. I started
to think of others and in some way, put them before me. I love to see people smile and laugh, so I do
what can to see that, even if I am not always happy.
Two years later, the same group and I traveled to New Jersey to do mission work after a hurricane
swept through. As we arrived, on the outside it looked like paradise. White sand beaches were
everywhere I looked. Alongside the beaches were tall and bright houses that were surrounded by
vibrant flowers, but on the inside it was broken and so were the

The Mission And Mission Of The Church's Global Outreach
Mission refers to an individual or group of people being sent out to complete a specific task or
purpose, such as ministering to those who lack the knowledge of Christ. Culbertson and Gailey
define missions as the "attempt to fulfill God 's call to make disciples of all people" (Culbertson
224). In Discovering Missions, Culbertson and Gailey speak on the countless aspects of missions
and the importance of global mission. The term mission means "sending out" or "assigned task"
(Culbertson 9). Missiology is a reflection upon the practice of Christian mission (Culbertson 9). The
difference between mission and missions is that mission is simply a "response to God's calling" and
the term missions are referring to "specific ways and organizational structures in which the Church's
global outreach is carried out" (Culbertson 11). The ultimate mission is discipleship. A strong
foundation is required to accept such a calling and to be effective in it.
"If God's people today want to be covenant partakers, they must view global mission as something
more than optional or tangential" (Culbertson 35). Not everyone is called to do global mission. In
other words, not everyone has the foundation required to answer to such a calling. In accepting a
call to missionary work, one must put themselves aside for the sake of others. The ultimate mission
is discipleship. The church is to reach people and win souls. Through winning souls, the believers
are to be built up and equipped for the work of

Evangelizing With Western Christian Music
Evangelizing with Western Christian Music When does evangelization through Western Christian
music provide the exact opposite of evangelization among indigenous cultures? Robin P. Harris,
James R. Krabill, and Vida Chenoweth provide arguments based on the concept that Christian
missionaries cannot fully preach the gospel through the utilization of Western Christian scriptural
songs. While all three individuals provide logical arguments, I, under the acquirement of my
viewpoint on the unspoken power of music on individuals, disagree with their sentiments. First, we
need to clearly constitute a definition of "universal" that makes it universal among all individuals. In
the context of universal music, the music should be, according to Harris, "understood in their
historical and cultural contexts to be interpreted correctly" (Krabill, 6). In this way, Christian
missionaries can fully understand certain cultural implications on music that can, in effect, prevent
the unwanted force of shoving the liturgy within the blaring sound of the organ, an instrument not
familiar and, frankly, not preferred by indigenous societies beyond the Western groups. But what
indicated that music defines a universal language initial to Harris' viewpoint? Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow, a famous writer during the early nineteenth century, created this term and clearly
inspired the Western musical society to adopt the term as poetical accuracy of what music
represents. To this day, ask any individual if

Mary Slessor 's The Lord
Mary Slessor's story has been told countless times for her bravery and dedication to the call of the
Lord. However, despite the fame that she had acquired, she held on her to humility and gave glory to
the Lord instead. She said, "Blessed the man and woman who is able to serve cheerfully in the
second rank – a big test." This quote shows her desire to serve the Lord and give Him credit before
she gave herself and glory. Mary exhibited this type of humility throughout her mission work in
Africa. During her time there, she accomplished many difficult tasks and challenges while still

Mary Slessor exhibited determination like no other. While in Calabar, she felt the Lord leading her
to a nearby tribe, otherwise known as the Okoyong people, who was "specially noted for its lawless
heathenism" (Livingstone 46). The tribe consistently denied her request to come see them and were
adamant that they did not want any missionaries. Despite this discouragement, she set out on her
own in a canoe down the Calabar River, so that she could minister to the people. When she decided
she wanted to make a home among this tribe, the people of her previous village told her she would
surely be killed. However, she preserved knowing that Lord's purpose for her involved the Okoyong
people. It was in this village that she cared for the children, began to teach them how to read and
write, shared community with the women, and planted the first ever Okoyong church. Beyond her
determination, she maintained a courageous attitude among this people group. During her time
there, the son of the chief of the tribe had died from an accident caused by a log. Because of this, the
chief sentenced all the people who were around to death. Instead of being fearful for her own life,
Mary fought for the lives of these people against the drunken mob. She devised a plan to help the
prisoners escape and trusted in the Lord to help her execute her plan without using force. After
demonstrating such valor, she managed to save every single prisoner. This was one of the first times

Things Fall Apart – White Missionaries Caused Umofia to Fall Apart
Faith has always been a guiding force in man's life. Chinua
Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart is a story that describes the effects of a
new Christian religion in a tribal village of Africa. The tribe has their
own language, known as Obi, a dignified culture and a value system that has
continued for many years as they trace back into their ancestry. Yet,
voids that this culture can no longer fill for modern tribesmen enable
white missionaries to intrude upon this system and convert many of the
tribe's younger members to the Christian faith. The tribal system falls

Unfortunately, this was not the feeling shared by many in the
clan and Okonkwo, in trying to make–up for his father's mistakes, took on
the responsibilities of an old man as a young boy and had the mind set of
an elder in the community because as was stated, those were the people he
ate his meals with and held his discussions with.
Okonkwo's own son, Nwoye, did not have the same work ethic and was not
working to prove his manhood to the rest of the village. Therefore, for
Okonkwo to expect hard work ethics of his son by instinct was unrealistic,
because Okonkwo's work ethic was certainly not a genetic result either.
This work ethic however is a central value of the community and when
younger members of the generation do not feel as though they are
responsible for the tribe's continued existence then they may not feel as
though an active participation in village life is necessary. On the other
hand, perhaps Okonkwo's work ethic was much stronger than the normal that
is necessary for the tribe to continue to flourish and he beats Nwoye
forgiving only the minimum amount of work expected of him. Perhaps it is
the feeling of failure that turns a member of the tribe like Nwoye to
Christianity. Perhaps he felt that he would be an inadequate member and
would be unable meet the standards

As I grew up I dreamed of exotic places I might be sent when it came time for me to apply to go and

were Japan, Norway, Cleveland and England just to name a few. A few months before I turned 19, I

was told I had been called to serve in southern part of Tokyo, Japan. I was told I would be learning

were also studying other languages. Greetings were shared in many languages by excited students.
I was assigned to two different leadership positions while in training. I learned that what I thought

Use Of Writing Used By The Missionaries Of Josiah Venture
and observed the larger purpose they all serve as a whole. I gathered many primary sources that
were written in different points of time. I was able to make sense of much of the data from my past
experience with support raising. I have spent several summers in the states with my parents as they
use these methods of support raising so I myself am also very familiar with many of Josiah Venture's
methods.
Results The results of this study show the importance of all of these forms of writing used by the
missionaries of Josiah Venture. It is important to realize that the supporters of all of these
missionaries are mainly residence of the United States and other European countries. The strategies
and roles of these writing types may not apply to every culture a certain missionary communicates
with. However, I the values and meaning behind these methods likely apply to all cultures.

letters. Like I said earlier in my paper, I interviewed my grandfather Richard Patty who served in the

William Carey: The Father of Modern Missions
William Carey was an English missionary. He was known as the "father of modern missions". He
was one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society. He translated the bible into Bengali,
Sanskrit and other languages and dialects used in India.
William Carey was born on August 17, 1761 in the village of Paulerspury in Northamptonshire,
England. As a child he was very interested in natural sciences, particularly growing plants. He was
naturally gifted in languages. He taught himself Latin. At the age of 14, William's father sent him to
a cobbler in the nearby village to learn repairing shoes and shoemaking. John Warr who was an
older apprentice Christian working there had a great influence on William. While in his apprentice,
William taught himself Greek with the help of a local villager who had a college education. Later, he
also taught himself Hebrew, Italian, Dutch and French.
William became involved with a local association of Christians. He became acquainted with people
like John Ryland, John Sutcliff and Andrew Fuller, who would become his close friends in later
years and they found the Baptist Missionary Society in October 1792. William was invited to preach

Came First Church
P Which came first, the Church or the mission of the Church? How do you answer that question?
When I have asked people that question, they usually answer "the Church." We experience the
Church before we understand mission. We go to church. We worship in church. We come to know
and grow in our faith through the Church. People point out that the Holy Spirit came upon the 120
followers of Christ in the Upper Room 10 days after Christ's Ascension. When the window opened
and Peter gave his first sermon, the Church began. What is often forgotten is what occurred 10 days
before Pentecost.
For that we read Matthew 28:19–20, the last words Jesus spoke to his followers: "'Go, therefore, and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the
Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you...'" Jesus gave his followers a
mission, which preceded the formation of the Church. The formation of the Church would evolve
later, as we read about in the Acts of the Apostles. The mission, given by Christ, preceded the
Church, and the Church emerged from that mission.
If we take a moment and return to that rocky mountaintop in Matthew 28:19–20. Feel the breeze.
Feel the rocky soil under your feet. Hear all the people speaking around you. Be aware that Jesus is

Escobar says that "the heart of mission" is the drive to share the good news wit all, to cross every
boarder with the gospel. We live in a multicultural world where western Christianity is being
confronted by the Christianity of the Southern hemisphere, which is "marked by a culture of
poverty, an oral liturgy, narrative preaching, uninhibited emotionalism, maximum participation in
prayer and worship, dreams and vision, faith healing, and an intense search for community and
belonging." As a result,

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Missionary Kid By Tim Stewart
Tim Stewart, creator of the Dictionary of Christianese website, in his article "Missionary Kid (MK)"
(2013), argues that missionary kids can either be little devils or precious angles, but either way they
have a unique and diverse upbringing. He supports this claim by first defining a good MK as
someone who practices what the bible teaches (par. 1), then by declaring the bad stereotype of the
MK who falters under the pressure and becomes a rebel or troublemaker (par. 2), finally by showing
that MKs grow up surrounded by a different culture than their parent's, which provides many
beneficial circumstances for learning (par. 3–6), while also cultivating issues when returning
"home". Steward's purpose in writing this is to educate Christians about

Who Is Achebe's Things Fall Apart?
Although a confluence of factors are responsible for the destruction of Umofian society, Achebe
suggests that the real culprits are the missionaries and the African converts due to the proposition of
fighting fellow clan members, the growing discontent in Umofia, and the loss of kinship. This loss
of culture signifies the prospect and reality of change in a society, sporadically provoking
annihilation. The correct perspective is that Achebe advocates that the real culprits are the
missionaries and the African converts due to the proposition of fighting fellow clan members. This
is seen through Achebe's question of "How... we can fight when our own brothers have turned
against us?"(Achebe 176). By asking a rhetorical question, Achebe implies the unlikeliness of
Umofians to harm fellow clan members because of a detrimental idea. This proposition, thus,
instigates fear into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, Achebe argues that "An abominable religion has settled among you. A young man can
now leave his father and his brothers" (Achebe 167). By instigating a stereotype of a sagacious,
elderly man, Achebe suggests that there is a loss of kinship due to the missionaries' varying
traditions. These customs, consequently, appealed to the outcasts of the Umofian society and lured
in many clan members. Additionally, Victor C. Uchendu insists that "There is a loving reverence for
the deceased ancestors...", but now "they are scolded as if they were still living" (Doc D). Document
D emphasizes the contrast of how ancestors used to be revered as and what they were deemed as
after many Africans converted. This assimilation into European culture, thus, undermined the
importance of ancestors and fostered a loss of kinship. This loss of kinship, therefore, urges Achebe
to suggest that it is a direct result of the missionaries and the African

Effie Dinkelacker: A Brief Biography
When we think of famous missionaries, the ones that often come to mind are Jim Elliot, David
Livingstone, and Mary Cloutier. But I am here to introduce you to a new missionary that served in
modern day China. Her name is Effie Irene Dinkelacker. I have looked online and found out that
God used her as a missionary in China, a loving wife, a professor at Temple University, and a Godly
woman who had more faith than I can even imagine. The youngest of six, Effie Dinkelacker was
born on September 11th of 1893 in Lattimer Pennsylvania. She lived on a farm for the beginning of
her life, living in a very rural part of the state of Pennsylvania she quickly realized that she was
called to be a medical missionary so she went off to college to get training for it. She did not go into
missions until about 1916 (ancestry.com). She left from New York City and arrived in Tsinan China
in the Shantung province. She was accompanied by one of her sisters and many others were in the
mission with her. Her main ministry there was an a nurse in the city of Tsinan. Tsinan China was one

Effie left China and took a boat back to America, stopping at London England along the way. After
she came back home on furlough she moved back into her childhood home and found a job as a 3rd

years. Eventually life started to get better for her when in 1927 she got married to Mr. Harold Wilke
on Sept. 14, 1927. She moved in with him and continued her job as a 3rd shift nurse. Life was
looking good, they started thinking about expanding their family until around 1930 when she went
through a horrible divorce that must have really gotten to her. I mean, she wanted to be a missionary
and serve God, but she only was there for three years then she went home to work in the United

I Am A Missionary, By Albert Schweitzer 's The Primeval...
In class we discussed various meanings for what it means to be a missionary. Overall we came to the
general conclusion on the first day of class 09/07/2016 that a missionary is someone who goes to a
different community to help fulfill some sort of purpose. The words italicized is what we as a class
decided are integral parts of the identity and mission of a missionary. In addition to this baseline
definition we also discussed possible reasons in which one may feeled compelled to take on a
mission. Some of the ideas brainstormed include: taking on the mission to fulfill a calling, for
gratification, or for religious and ideological agendas. The reading I will be focusing on is from
Albert Schweitzer 's The Primeval Forest specifically the chapter titled "The Mission". The reading
fits into this definition quite well. Specifically the chapter shows a lot about Schnitzer 's purpose and
reasons for embarking on a mission trip in the Ogowe. Throughout the reading Schnitzer discuss a
lot about Christianity and the capacity in which he believes the people of the Ogowe may or may not
be able to digest Christianity.
"They have, then, a great natural capacity for taking in the elements if religion, though the historical
element in Christianity lies, naturally, outside their ken. ... Christianity is for him the light that
shines amid the darkness of his fears; it assures him that he is not in the power of nature spirits,
ancestral spirits of fetishes" (Schweitzer 115). Before coming to

Christianity Rediscovered By Vincent J. Donovan
Christianity Rediscovered
Chapter One:
In the first chapter of "Christianity Rediscovered" by Vincent J. Donovan he is introducing us to the
idea that missionaries now have a poor reputation due to their history. He says "History has offered
the opportunity to deflect and distort the meaning of missionary work in every age". For a long time
a missionary was a person spreading the word of God and after years of doing so we have
diminished many different beliefs, practices, cultures and history. At the time it was thought to be
the right thing, to spread out and share the gospel to help people find meaning and acceptance. In
today's age a missionary is a lot of different things, in many cases it is more focused on the health
and physical wellbeing of the people. Many people still share the gospel through missionary work,
but in other cases it is more of a material aid. Donovan introduces the book as a voyage of discovery
he wants us to put our normal beliefs aside to see his perspective of living a missionaries life and
struggling with the fact of if you are helping or hurting.
Donovan speaks about the missionaries who came to East Africa after they were taken into slavery.
The missionaries thought it would be a good idea to come over and buy the people to save them
from harsh lives, so they bought as many as they could. Doing this they also taught them all of their
customs and where forced into Christianity instead of their beliefs ways and cultures. This struck off

White Missionaries In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart
The presence of the missionaries in Things Fall Apart was not only negative to Umuofia, but

the other Indians in his reservation feel less than them and stupid. In both books, whites repressed
the culture of the people that they lived with and forced them to confine to their ways.

Funds are a serious problem in third world countries and the fact is that they just don't have all the
money to support your work among them. The job would not enable supply for a family and keep it
going without outside help. Business missionaries have the skills needed to work with people in and
out of country to identify money raising opportunities. In addition, using the skills learned in math
classes and accounting class, one would be able to manage the funds appropriately. Working papers
and figuring out expenses can cause long work hours, but these hours do not have to be spent far
from home. Doing work at home and around the kids will show them the amount of effort that is
needed to be put into what they have and show them they have to work hard for the things they
want. Being around children is one of the most important things a parent can do with their parenting.

fundamental information needed for raising money, researching prospective donors and how to
contact them, maintaining funds, and handling the legal side of it all. These skills will dramatically
affect the ability to support a family. Missions work is not something that pays, it is solely based on
others donating to your cause. While looking at the two options for missions work,

The Bible By The Poisonwood Bible
Midterm
Movies and books about missionaries haven't portrayed missionaries in a positive light. Fiction
writers and movie producers have led people on to believe, that missionaries are self–serving and as
having specific intentions. One of the prime examples of misrepresenting a missionary; is the book
called The Poisonwood Bible. I had to read The Poisonwood Bible in an English class.
The Poisonwood Bible is the story of a missionary named Nathan Price and his family. Nathan was
Reverend and he was mean to his wife and children. Nathan and his family lived in the Congo. He
was disrespectful to his wife and his children were terrified of him. I remember reading the book
thinking, how does he represent God?
Missionaries are sent out to cross cultural barriers and spread the gospel. Missionaries are not sent
too foreign countries to destroy or to break the people down. Missionaries have faced scrutiny,
because of the negative of missionaries in movies and in books. There some positive movies made
about missionaries.
Jesus was the perfect missionary. Jesus went to different places and taught the word of God. Jesus
drew people unto him. Jesus told his disciples, that if they follow him, he would make them
fishermen of men. Jesus taught anywhere. Jesus delivered the word so profoundly.

of many nations. According to Matthew Jesus was the Messiah for all people. When Jesus became

Racial Discrimination And Religion
Racial discrimination and religion are among the most discussed personal and public policy topics
today. The United States is often divided over issues that have these differences at their heart. From
the controversy surrounding confederate monuments in public locations to freedom of religion, the
country, it seems, can never come together and agree in these areas. These issues have, in fact, been
hot topics for discussion and disagreement for centuries. Even in the Antebellum period, people
were at odds with each other attempting to resolve differences that, while they were unique for their
time, still were manifestations of the same larger issues of race and religion. In those days, there was
great fervor related to both the Great Awakening and rise of abolitionism in response to the slave
system of the South that persisted into the 19th century. The Great Awakening refers to a dramatic
rise in the popularity in evangelical religion in America. The First Great Awakening took place in
the early to mid 18th century while English–speaking America was still made up of colonies that
were owned by the British. The Second Great Awakening, which is more pertinent to this research,
reached its peak early in the 19th century. During the Second Great Awakening there was a dramatic
swell in evangelical church membership occurred in denominations like the Baptists and
Methodists, whose ministers were the leaders of the movement. Religious discord could come from
a variety of sources,

`` A Winter Of Lahore `` By Ashley Carus Wilson
Irene Petrie: Missionary to Kashmir
Written by Ashley Carus–Wilson, this book is a biography of Irene Petrie, a missionary who went
abroad to India for four year, and died during her time there. Carus–Wilson is sister to Petrie, and
wrote this book for the purpose of ensuring that her sister was remembered and honored by the
community. The chapter being examined is entitled, "A Winter in Lahore", and details Petrie's first
arrival to India and her mission work thereafter.
The audience of this text can be identified as a variety of individuals involved in the Protestant
Christian religion. It is evident that this book is written with the intent of praising missionaries,
especially brave females like Irene Petrie. Many members of the church community during this time
were very interested in learning about the bravery and dedication of the inspiring missionaries.
These individuals most likely loved reading books such as this to learn more about the missionaries
who dedicated their lives to God in hopes of converting the uncultured, barbaric Indian people. It is
reasonable to assume that these individuals were also the ones who helped support such dangerous
missionary endeavors spiritually, if not also financially. By showing all the accomplishments of
Petrie, Carus–Wilson is able to exemplify a missionary success story, which further increases the
support of the missionary field.

Gailey And Culbertson: Book Review
Authors, Gailey and Culbertson in chapters 1–7 indicated that for many people, mission and
missions mean almost the same thing and are often used interchangeably. Those advocating for the
use of mission felt that missions emphasized too much the human side while the singular word
mission would be a needed reminder that missionary work is trying to accomplish God's mission
(Gailey, Culbertson p 11). Mission is seen as the comprehensive label for the Church's response to
God's calling while missions are the particular ways and organizational structures through which the
Church's global outreach is carried out. Christ's Great Commission is a powerful call to the Church

The Short Term Mission Trips
Think about the poverty and problems that all countries around the world are facing today and every
day. As Americans we have an urge to go into these countries to help as much as possible because of
that we have begun a revolution. Americans began going on mission trips around the 1960s but did
not really pick up until the 1990s. The trend grew after multiple natural disasters, Americans saw
and need and went, since then short term mission trips show no sign stopping anytime soon. As the
popularity of leaving our comfort zones, many people have found issues with the way the trips are
led to the extent of questioning whether or not these trips are really worth the amount of money and
time that they consume. Through periodicals, interviews, narratives, and articles, I will show the
issues and improvements that could be made to the living situations, attitude of the Americans, and
relationships that are acquired during the short term mission trips.
In October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch slammed onto the coasts of multiple South American
countries. Countless people lost their homes, over eleven thousand people lost their lives, and the
hurricane left five billion dollars' worth of damage in its wake ("Hurricane Mitch"). This event
caused a new wave of events also of short term mission trips. Americans seeing the cities torn to
shreds decided to act. For a couple of weeks at a time, different groups would go clean up, rebuild,

Counties were calling for a moratorium on western missionaries. It is only obvious why this
occurred. The issues once again stemmed around many of the western missionaries attitudes that
their ways were the ways for all. The young churches in some of the areas such as Asia, African and
Latin America wanted to develop their own ways of doing things. The "missionary go home"
movement included receiving money from western cultures. These churches that wanted to venture
out on their own without the western control put blame on "missionary racism, paternalism, and
colonialism." What many western missionaries began to figure out was "they were powerless
without indigenous partners who could express the gospel in their own framework." With that being
said, the western missionaries who decided to spread the gospel and to do God's work, based on
God's agenda did, in fact, serve a very good purpose in spreading the gospel. Throughout the history

Missionary Trip To America Research Paper
By attending the missionary trip to South Africa, I have touched the lives of many just as they have

harmony. Others are like a splash. They transform people's lives with grace, mercy, and forgiveness;
they bring people closer. When one thinks of a mission trip, what is the general assumed
illustration? A group of Christians reconstructing non–believers into religious disciples? Churches
being built so that worshippers have someplace to go to interact with Christ? For me, a mission trip
can be that or something small, like we seemed to do while recently visiting Southern Africa.

What is the purpose of this when we can just read scriptures or listen to preachers from the comfort

Things Fall Apart Analytical Essay
A Christian Missionary is a person who is called by God to preach his word. Their job is to spread to
everyone. Mr. Brown is a more effective Christian Missionary than Reverend Smith. Mr. Brown is
willing to make an effort to understand Igbo's beliefs. He didn't try to tell them what they believed in
was wrong. Mr. Brown made the people of Umuofia have a feeling of growth again. He told them
that "everything was possible." (Things Fall Apart 178) He didn't come in trying to tell the people of
Umuofia what to do; his first impression was easy going. By him being so generous it earned him a
lot of respect from the clan. Ross W. Sanderson argues, that "Professor Patterson stated in his very

of war and hate, but the God of peace and love." (Unapologetic Christianity 34) Being hateful

Auntie said there was a being called God. Based on her description I believed it!
Moroni, I learned, knew that I, and others like me, would be looking for acceptance. He included in
his portion of the record the reason why church was important for me by inscribing how it worked in
his day expressing that "the church did meet together oft... to speak one with another concerning the
welfare of their souls." Truly, going to church has been my salvation from the time I was a pup–kid!
My Auntie started it all with Pastor White. I have a testimony of attending church before I really
knew God!
Church helped foster the culture of faith in my life and prepared me for later life–events that would
lead me to God. Others in the church exhibited the pastor's resolve for inclusion. For example, the
kids at Pastor White's church performed a play once. I do not recall the sister 's name that headed

N Africa Block Of Islam
n Africa block of Islam that is estimated at being the fourth largest community of Muslims in the
world. Out of 4,600,000 inhabitants there are less than 2,000 followers of Christ that exist within
their ranks, making this group of Christians less than 0.05% of the population. With the majority of
Kanuri being Orthodox Sunni Muslims, and having a strong belief in their Muslims faith stand to

about the Kanuri. Whereas, from these studies some information lead to several things that need to
be taken into considered in the attempt to convert the Kanuri people to Christianity: 1. The Kanuri
are said to be a primitive people. They have very little access to modern technology. They live
strictly of what they grow and sell themselves. 2. The literacy rate of Kanuri is very low; Base of on
this low rate they are dependent on oratorical communication. Only ten percent of the population

Missionary Work And Its Evolvement In Christianity

  • 1. Missionary Work and Its Evolvement in Christianity In the church's tradition, there are traces of missionary activity and signs of an understanding of mission. People, guided by the Holy Spirit, have lived their lives in a way obeying the will of God and being close to Him. They talked about their faith and the how they know God. After the persecution period, they then have the courage to speak and, hence, they gossip the Gospel everywhere and this gossiping is aided by the power of the Holy Spirit which they received in baptism. This implies that through baptism, every man and woman has the responsibility to share the Goodness of Christ with or without words. But, as time went by, others found it crucial to stay away from worldly allurements by staying in secluded places. They were inspired to stay close to Christ and staying close to Christ is to shun worldly things. This marks the rise of the monastic movements. However, these monastic movements are not mere movements but are missionary activities in themselves because they portray a particular vocation of the Church. They considered mission as moving away from the world and have more time in praying for all people and for the church. Furthermore, this kind of missionary activity has extended even to the lay people, but not living an ascetic life, instead, they proclaim their mission in their day to day experience with their family – e.g. a mother's role is a mission towards the children and children towards mothers. There was a strong change in the concept of mission and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Similarities Between John And Elaine Beekman John and Elaine Beekman are missionaries God sent to the Chol tribes in Chiapas, Mexico. This is where they translated the New Testament and hymns into the native language, they helped many come to know Christ, they taught them how to read and write; and they also helped the sick and needy. John Beekman was born with a heart murmur and he was restricted to many physical activities, he had no interest for Christ and when he was older he read a book called The Wonders of Prophecy by John Urquhart, which made him change the way he lived – he now had a purpose – to follow Christ. He resigned from his job as an accountant at a telephone company and went to study at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He spent many years learning Greek, pastoring, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Beekman had a baby girl called Sharon, but the baby died four days later. The Beekman's used Sharon death as a testimony to the Chol women as a means of comfort when they lost children. The Chols also celebrated a lot of fiestas and celebrations but most of them were to pagan gods and the Beekman's soon helped change them so they were worshipping God and thanking him for everything that he had done. (For example, Christmas to believers and unbelievers were very different. Believers would gather together to worship God and pray. Unbelievers celebrated by drinking, dancing, beating drums, and screaming). Mr. Beekman trusted God because he told Mrs. Beekman, "The Lord has given us a vision for the work among the Chols here." And he never doubted God for anything. Soon enough God started working among many of the people in the Chol villages. Soon the Beekman's were teaching them to read and write. Mr. Beekman was teaching many of the boys how to preach and tell others about Christ. One Preacher boy said, " We do servico for Christ because the Holy Spirit compels us by filling our hearts with love." He wanted to tell everyone about God and His love for them and he did everything thing he could to preach to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Cultural And Social Behavior Of A Society The cultural means relating to the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a society. Therefore, when doing world mission we must be able to relate to the culture in which we are ministering to. We are not to forget who we are as far as culturally, but we are to have the knowledge of that particular culture. For example, in Chapter 3 in our textbook, it speaks of Patrick, an English slave who escaped from Ireland and later returned as a missionary. Being that he "understood the people and their language, their issues, and their ways", served as a channel for the people to easily receive from him. Being able to relate to a group of people, having the knowledge of that particular group, and being able to understand the group in which you are ministering to is very essential in doing mission work. You have to be careful how you approach people and when you do be conscious of how you engage unbelievers. In conclusion, cultural simply refers to relations. On the other hand, this particular question is referring to the negative fallouts (listed in the text) as results to decisions missionaries have made overtime. Should those missionaries be representatives of all missionaries? In my opinion, the spread of Christianity, as I refer to as the period of missionary work, has had a major, positive influence on the world in many, many ways. Some missionaries may be looked upon as bringing about negative change and some are looked upon as bringing about positive change. I believe it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Effect of White Missionaries on an African Tribe in... The Effect of White Missionaries on an African Tribe in Things Fall Apart by Achebe In the book "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe, we see the effect the white missionaries had on an African tribe and the antihero Okonkwo. The main character Okonkwo is a tragic hero. Achebe depicts Okonkwo as a Shakespearean hero with a tragic flaw, that tragic flaw is the fact that he will do anything in his power not to be a weak man like his father Unoka. Okonkwo did what he did because he hated his father and would do anything in his power to be the exact opposite of his father. Unoka is Okonkwo's father, he is a very lazy man and has amassed many debts. Okonkwo is very ashamed of Unoka and seems to hate him very much. Achebe states ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When the missionaries came to their land, people hated them, but when they started getting people to go their way, the Ibo started to fall apart. The missionaries came and told people, like women whose twins were left to die in the forest, that they don't have to kill their children the next time they have twins if they join them and their religion. This made many people think that they took the evil people out of the tribe but in fact they were gaining power by getting a lot of people to follow them. For example, there was a girl named Nneka who had, several times, given birth to twins who were thrown away. Achebe says, Nneka had had four previous pregnancies and childbirths. But each time she had borne twins, and they had been immediately thrown away. Her husband and his family were already becoming highly critical of such a woman and were not unduly perturbed when they found out she had fled to join the Christians. It was a good riddance. This shows us the Achebe understands and is not surprised when the women fled with Christians. We can see that because when he says that her family was not "unduly perturbed when they found out she had left", this tells us that he didn't really care about the people who left. He understood why they left but as he said it was a "good riddance". As we see, it is highly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. My Mentorship Bible Study I was baptized as an infant and accepted Jesus as my savior when I was four years old. The Lord blessed me with Christian parents and the opportunity to grow up always hearing the Word. We are members of New City Fellowship of Fredericksburg. It is a PCA church with an intentional cross– cultural vision. My family and I are very involved in our church. We actively participate in worship, small groups, Bible study and serving where the Lord calls us. Personally, I am part of a small group and a mentorship Bible study group for older teen girls lead by some of the older women. Before the mentorship group, I was in youth group. This mentorship group has helped further my knowledge and understanding of God's word. In addition to worshiping and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We did so by helping the Ferguson family with their daily household chores as well as help the residents of the Therapy Center with some of their jobs. We shared God's love by helping the residents with tasks like picking plums, making jam, and helping them rebuild a wall on one of their sheds. We assisted the Ferguson family in helping take care of their two boys and newborn daughter, clearing and preparing their garden, making and canning pasta sauce, making a concrete driveway and helping rebuild their shed. Because we were staying in the Therapy center and were very far from any cities, we ate our meals in the nearby castle where we had a cook prepare our meals. Every morning, during breakfast, we did a devotion and every evening, after dinner, we had a little worship service, and sometimes the residents would join us. This mission trip gave me the opportunity to serve others in a tangible way and has helped further my servant's heart and want to do more for the people around me. It also gave me more knowledge of what other countries are like and how many people need God's love and word. The trip also furthered my knowledge of God's word and love and how to share it with others. I hope to go on more missions trips in the future to help and assist others and show them God's love or even serve in my community doing the same thing. It also gave me a desire to explore God's ... • 11. Jonathan Goforth An Open Door In China Summary Jonathan Goforth: An Open Door in China by Janet and Geoff Benge gives the account of Jonathan Goforth, a missionary to China who ultimately had to put his life and the lives of his family in God's hands, in order to spread the gospel to people who had never been reached before. Jonathan Goforth was born in 1859 and was raised on a small farm in Ontario, Canada. At twenty–four years old, he attended Knox College, with the intention of going into missions. While still schooling, he joined the William Street Mission and managed to evangelize the poorest area of Toronto and even worked in a prison, spreading God's Word to the people that nobody else wanted to work to reach. Jonathan started speaking at churches around Canada and eventually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his last year of college, he was told that his class at Knox College was going to sponsor him Rosalind in their mission efforts in China. After a rough voyage aboard the SS Parthia, Jonathan and Rosalind Goforth eventually made it to Shanghai. After some deliberation, it was decided that the Goforths would focus their efforts in the North Honan province of China with the Canadian Presbyterian Mission. They stayed in the city of Chefoo for a period of time, however, to learn Mandarin. From Chefoo, they moved to Pangchwang, and then on to Linching, each move bringing them closer to North Honan. They moved to Chuwang, where they faced more challenges brought on by the Chinese people's resentment of foreigners. The time that the Goforths spent in China happened to fall during the same time as the Boxer Rebellion. This made life increasingly difficult for the family. They faced trials such as nasty rumors, and the theft of many of their belongings, but the family persisted nonetheless. In one instance, Jonathan was maliciously attacked and wounded by bandits, who bludgeoned him with knives and swords, leaving him fighting for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Reflection On My Belief Of God It's common to not notice the tiny blessings of each day. Call it luck, God, good karma, whatever you want, but sometimes things just go right. Other times those lucky instances are so impactful that we have no choice but notice them. I attribute these miracles to God, though I have not always done so. When I began high school my belief in God was very basic, limited to the assumption that there could be no other possible explanation for the world around me. This reasoning worked for a while, but then suddenly as if a switch had been flipped, it just didn't provide me with the same peace it once had. The faith I now have comes from sma experiences where I noticed God's hand in my life. One such experience was a day trip my best friend ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Faster and faster until a tingling feeling reached my hands, numbing them. I sensed Jordan was just as uncomfortable. Without realizing it she had taken a step closer, leaving us standing practically on top of each other. Before I could, she turned saying, "You know I don 't really want to see that chair sculpture anymore." Agreeing with her I shakily responded with our now infamous inside joke,"Yeah, no chair is worth it." What happened next was the first miracle of the day. Previously he used his nursing skills along with his skills in aviation as an entering wedge into many countries where they were reluctant to allow Christians and as a result the places were much more open for church work. After coming back form the mission field, he started a mission foundation, Gospel Missions International. He also started a ministry that trains people who have a desire to one day become a medical missionary, thus ensuring that this work does not end. David Gates has inspired countless people to become a missionary. But he didn 't just stop at inspiring them. He also started a mission foundation called Global Missions International. His foundation helps dreams become realities for many missionaries. Through Gospel Missions International, he is supporting people like DJ and Jodi Knott, and Herman and Saray Gonzalez and others who are working in South America as missionary pilot nurses. They are changing the world one person at a time and many times beginning with the physical needs of the people. From research, it didn 't appear that David Gates had any direct influence on Adventist nursing, but he did use nursing to open the door in many countries for Adventists to be able to witness. And now, through his ministry, he is still is able to send missionaries to other countries that previously would not have been open for them had it not been for medical missionary work. Shamanism In Alaska Research Paper Christian mission in Alaska dates back to around 1794; it might have been a little before this time due to the Russian fur trade, but it was in 1794 when the first Russian Orthodox missionaries came. The spread of Christianity in Alaska continued to spread over the years. Alaska Mission for Christ is an organization that leads many mission teams in different villages of Alaska today. Before Christianity came to Alaska, Shamanism was a huge part of the Native Alaskan culture. In 1794, the first Russian Orthodox missionaries came to Alaska to begin further sharing Christianity to the natives. "Many of the Orthodox missionaries defended Alaska Native people. The tsar in St. Petersburg had always prohibited the poor treatment of Natives, but many fur traders ignored his orders." Of the missionaries who defended the natives, "none [were] more important [than] Ioann Veniaminov, later named Bishop Innocent, the first Orthodox bishop in Alaska" (Alaska Humanities Forum). Veniaminov worked to translate the Russian Liturgical into the vernacular of the people and continued to learn about their culture, he also helped out with giving vaccinations when there was a smallpox epidemic. Veniaminov cared for the natives and took care of them and learned their culture and language instead of forcing his upon them. In 1870, a Presbyterian missionary came to Alaska. This missionary's name was Sheldon Jackson and not only shared Christianity with the natives, but was also heavily involved in their educational programs. "Jackson had no problem in mixing religion with education when it came to establishing churches in Alaska," converting the natives and starting schools. "Jackson actively discouraged the use of indigenous languages, traditional cultures and spiritualties" (Andersen). Jackson is a complete 180 compared to Veniaminov. "Missionaries were paid from government educational funds to run their schools, while the goal of their teaching was not only to educate but to evangelize." • 19. Christian Mission Book Review Essay Christian Mission Book Review Part two begins with David Livingstone, a Scottish missionary, and a professional doctor. He was very interested in exploration and his main goal was to stop Portuguese and Arab slave trade, he believed in human self–worth. He got his men and his supplies and started his voyage to Africa to map Africa, he was successful at mapping most of Zambezi. Livingstone was accused of not being a "real" missionary and he was too political but he always made sure he was working with God in mind. Livingstone died at the age of 60 in 1873 defending the African's freedom. His people cut out his heart and buried it, the rest of his body was mummified and taken to Westminster Abbey to be buried, as he wished. A statue was built in his honor with the base reading, "Missionary, Explorer, Liberator". Livingstone is one example of how much political and economic power a Christian missionary can have. He also encouraged the work of the Jesuits in China. The western power and missionaries have created bad names for the social/cultural changes or for being connected with colonialism, imperialism, westernity, and modernity mostly by the missionaries. Some say that Christianity has challenged or strengthened the local power. "Scientific racism" first came up in the 1850s Joseph–Arthur de Gobineu's book called Essi sur l'inegalite des races humanines. For that I am eternally grateful for all the support I have received for all that I have done. Who can say that they were a Princess for a year and traveled all over the western Wisconsin to represent their town in parades and events? Who can say that when they were 13 years old, they got to travel across the country with their church group and do mission work in Seattle, Washington by bus? The week spent with my mission group was one of the most emotionally challenging weeks I have encountered. Seeing others have nothing compared to what you do, is one of the most shocking things that you can experience. Being face to face with those who live in tents and eat one meal a day shows you how good some of us have it. Our mission group attended a program called "Tent City." This is an area where those who don't have the money to keep their homes, live. These people set up an area just for tents that are shared with three to five people. We got to serve these people by feeding them a whole dinner. While we were there we listened to the stories that they had to share. We learned about their previous lives and how they ended up here. This was the day that reality had hit me. I lived by taking advantage and never thought about how others lived. This was also that day that changed the way I lived. I started to think of others and in some way, put them before me. I love to see people smile and laugh, so I do what can to see that, even if I am not always happy. Two years later, the same group and I traveled to New Jersey to do mission work after a hurricane swept through. As we arrived, on the outside it looked like paradise. White sand beaches were everywhere I looked. Alongside the beaches were tall and bright houses that were surrounded by vibrant flowers, but on the inside it was broken and so were the ... • 23. The Mission And Mission Of The Church's Global Outreach Mission refers to an individual or group of people being sent out to complete a specific task or purpose, such as ministering to those who lack the knowledge of Christ. Culbertson and Gailey define missions as the "attempt to fulfill God 's call to make disciples of all people" (Culbertson 224). In Discovering Missions, Culbertson and Gailey speak on the countless aspects of missions and the importance of global mission. The term mission means "sending out" or "assigned task" (Culbertson 9). Missiology is a reflection upon the practice of Christian mission (Culbertson 9). The difference between mission and missions is that mission is simply a "response to God's calling" and the term missions are referring to "specific ways and organizational structures in which the Church's global outreach is carried out" (Culbertson 11). The ultimate mission is discipleship. A strong foundation is required to accept such a calling and to be effective in it. "If God's people today want to be covenant partakers, they must view global mission as something more than optional or tangential" (Culbertson 35). Not everyone is called to do global mission. In other words, not everyone has the foundation required to answer to such a calling. In accepting a call to missionary work, one must put themselves aside for the sake of others. The ultimate mission is discipleship. The church is to reach people and win souls. Through winning souls, the believers are to be built up and equipped for the work of ... Evangelizing With Western Christian Music Evangelizing with Western Christian Music When does evangelization through Western Christian music provide the exact opposite of evangelization among indigenous cultures? Robin P. Harris, James R. Krabill, and Vida Chenoweth provide arguments based on the concept that Christian missionaries cannot fully preach the gospel through the utilization of Western Christian scriptural songs. While all three individuals provide logical arguments, I, under the acquirement of my viewpoint on the unspoken power of music on individuals, disagree with their sentiments. First, we need to clearly constitute a definition of "universal" that makes it universal among all individuals. In the context of universal music, the music should be, according to Harris, "understood in their historical and cultural contexts to be interpreted correctly" (Krabill, 6). In this way, Christian missionaries can fully understand certain cultural implications on music that can, in effect, prevent the unwanted force of shoving the liturgy within the blaring sound of the organ, an instrument not familiar and, frankly, not preferred by indigenous societies beyond the Western groups. But what indicated that music defines a universal language initial to Harris' viewpoint? Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a famous writer during the early nineteenth century, created this term and clearly inspired the Western musical society to adopt the term as poetical accuracy of what music represents. He was one of the founders of the Baptist Missionary Society. He translated the bible into Bengali, Sanskrit and other languages and dialects used in India. William Carey was born on August 17, 1761 in the village of Paulerspury in Northamptonshire, England. As a child he was very interested in natural sciences, particularly growing plants. He was naturally gifted in languages. He taught himself Latin. At the age of 14, William's father sent him to a cobbler in the nearby village to learn repairing shoes and shoemaking. John Warr who was an older apprentice Christian working there had a great influence on William. While in his apprentice, William taught himself Greek with the help of a local villager who had a college education. Later, he also taught himself Hebrew, Italian, Dutch and French. William became involved with a local association of Christians. He became acquainted with people like John Ryland, John Sutcliff and Andrew Fuller, who would become his close friends in later years and they found the Baptist Missionary Society in October 1792. We experience the Church before we understand mission. We go to church. We worship in church. We come to know and grow in our faith through the Church. People point out that the Holy Spirit came upon the 120 followers of Christ in the Upper Room 10 days after Christ's Ascension. When the window opened and Peter gave his first sermon, the Church began. What is often forgotten is what occurred 10 days before Pentecost. For that we read Matthew 28:19–20, the last words Jesus spoke to his followers: "'Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you...'" Jesus gave his followers a mission, which preceded the formation of the Church. The formation of the Church would evolve later, as we read about in the Acts of the Apostles. The mission, given by Christ, preceded the Church, and the Church emerged from that mission. If we take a moment and return to that rocky mountaintop in Matthew 28:19–20. Feel the breeze. Although a confluence of factors are responsible for the destruction of Umofian society, Achebe suggests that the real culprits are the missionaries and the African converts due to the proposition of fighting fellow clan members, the growing discontent in Umofia, and the loss of kinship. This loss of culture signifies the prospect and reality of change in a society, sporadically provoking annihilation. The correct perspective is that Achebe advocates that the real culprits are the missionaries and the African converts due to the proposition of fighting fellow clan members. This is seen through Achebe's question of "How... we can fight when our own brothers have turned against us?"(Achebe 176). • 48. I Am A Missionary, By Albert Schweitzer 's The Primeval... In class we discussed various meanings for what it means to be a missionary. Overall we came to the general conclusion on the first day of class 09/07/2016 that a missionary is someone who goes to a different community to help fulfill some sort of purpose. The words italicized is what we as a class decided are integral parts of the identity and mission of a missionary. In addition to this baseline definition we also discussed possible reasons in which one may feeled compelled to take on a mission. Some of the ideas brainstormed include: taking on the mission to fulfill a calling, for gratification, or for religious and ideological agendas. The reading I will be focusing on is from Albert Schweitzer 's The Primeval Forest specifically the chapter titled "The Mission". The reading fits into this definition quite well. Specifically the chapter shows a lot about Schnitzer 's purpose and reasons for embarking on a mission trip in the Ogowe. Throughout the reading Schnitzer discuss a lot about Christianity and the capacity in which he believes the people of the Ogowe may or may not be able to digest Christianity. • 50. Christianity Rediscovered By Vincent J. Donovan Christianity Rediscovered Chapter One: In the first chapter of "Christianity Rediscovered" by Vincent J. Donovan he is introducing us to the idea that missionaries now have a poor reputation due to their history. He says "History has offered the opportunity to deflect and distort the meaning of missionary work in every age". For a long time a missionary was a person spreading the word of God and after years of doing so we have diminished many different beliefs, practices, cultures and history. At the time it was thought to be the right thing, to spread out and share the gospel to help people find meaning and acceptance. In today's age a missionary is a lot of different things, in many cases it is more focused on the health and physical wellbeing of the people. Many people still share the gospel through missionary work, but in other cases it is more of a material aid. Donovan introduces the book as a voyage of discovery he wants us to put our normal beliefs aside to see his perspective of living a missionaries life and struggling with the fact of if you are helping or hurting. Donovan speaks about the missionaries who came to East Africa after they were taken into slavery. The missionaries thought it would be a good idea to come over and buy the people to save them from harsh lives, so they bought as many as they could. Given the chance, my mother would have gone to college." (35) While Junior is at school, he get's upset with the way that he is taught, so he throws a book at the teacher. After Arnold get's a suspension, his teacher comes to talk to him about his future. "'We were supposed to make you give up being Indian. our songs and stories and language and dancing. Everything. We weren't trying to kill Indian people. We were trying to kill Indian culture.'" (35) White teachers were taught to kill the Indian inside to save a child from a culture that whites found threatening and bad. Junior constantly talks about how he and his family and everyone in his reservation are very poor. Bruce began questioning who God was in his life, he understood God as frightening, who cast out judgment upon His creation. To help him better understand he began studying the Bible with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Later he learns that Jesus saves His children from their own sin after this He accepts Christ to be his Lord and Savior that he cannot keep to himself. Afterward, his friend Kent shares with Bruce that he accepted Christ as his Savior. As a result, Kent invites him to his Interdenominational church where Bruce stays until he learns that God has called him into the mission field. When he was staying with Julio's family, Bruce told Julio that he was interested in sharing the Gospel with the Indians in South America so Julio introduced Bruce to Dr. Christian who was a medic that helped the Indians with their health. Bruce went with Dr. Christian on one of his trips to help the Indian tribes. Strangely enough, while he was there Dr. Christian let Bruce stay with an Indian tribe for three weeks while Dr. Christian went to other Indian tribes to treat them with the medications he had. Consequently, Bruce wanted to stay with this certain Indian tribe because the missionary who he had sent his letter to, Mr. Saunders, lived near there. However, Mr. Saunders and many of the other missionaries did not like and support Bruce in his coming to South America without a mission board to sponsor him so they told him he was on his own. On the other hand, Bruce tended to enjoy his time with the Indian tribe he was with, but it was hard for him to share the Gospel since they did not speak the same language and also had negative opinions about ... I'll fight while there remains one dark soul without the light of God" (Communications Bureau, 2007). He will fight, and so should you. There are endless things in Africa that are in need of help, and they cannot all be changed by one person. Being a missionary isn't just about the things that will be seen, but about the places and people that need help. Funds are a serious problem in third world countries and the fact is that they just don't have all the money to support your work among them. The job would not enable supply for a family and keep it going without outside help. Business missionaries have the skills needed to work with people in and out of country to identify money raising opportunities. In addition, using the skills learned in math classes and accounting class, one would be able to manage the funds appropriately. Working papers and figuring out expenses can cause long work hours, but these hours do not have to be spent far from home. Doing work at home and around the kids will show them the amount of effort that is needed to be put into what they have and show them they have to work hard for the things they want. Being around children is one of the most important things a parent can do with their parenting. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014) Fundraisers, a business degree will offer the fundamental information needed for raising money, researching prospective donors and how to contact them, maintaining funds, and handling the legal side of it all. These skills will dramatically affect the ability to support a family. Missions work is not something that pays, it is solely based on others donating to your cause. • 58. The Bible By The Poisonwood Bible Midterm Movies and books about missionaries haven't portrayed missionaries in a positive light. Fiction writers and movie producers have led people on to believe, that missionaries are self–serving and as having specific intentions. One of the prime examples of misrepresenting a missionary; is the book called The Poisonwood Bible. I had to read The Poisonwood Bible in an English class. The Poisonwood Bible is the story of a missionary named Nathan Price and his family. Nathan was Reverend and he was mean to his wife and children. Nathan and his family lived in the Congo. He was disrespectful to his wife and his children were terrified of him. I remember reading the book thinking, how does he represent God? Missionaries are sent out to cross cultural barriers and spread the gospel. Missionaries are not sent too foreign countries to destroy or to break the people down. Missionaries have faced scrutiny, because of the negative of missionaries in movies and in books. There some positive movies made about missionaries. Jesus was the perfect missionary. Jesus went to different places and taught the word of God. Jesus drew people unto him. Jesus told his disciples, that if they follow him, he would make them fishermen of men. Jesus taught anywhere. Jesus delivered the word so profoundly. Jesus was from the lineage of Abraham. God made a covenant with Abraham to make him the father of many nations. According to Matthew Jesus was the Messiah for all people. When Jesus became angry, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 60. Racial Discrimination And Religion Racial discrimination and religion are among the most discussed personal and public policy topics today. The United States is often divided over issues that have these differences at their heart. From the controversy surrounding confederate monuments in public locations to freedom of religion, the country, it seems, can never come together and agree in these areas. These issues have, in fact, been hot topics for discussion and disagreement for centuries. Even in the Antebellum period, people were at odds with each other attempting to resolve differences that, while they were unique for their time, still were manifestations of the same larger issues of race and religion. In those days, there was great fervor related to both the Great Awakening and rise of abolitionism in response to the slave system of the South that persisted into the 19th century. The Great Awakening refers to a dramatic rise in the popularity in evangelical religion in America. The First Great Awakening took place in the early to mid 18th century while English–speaking America was still made up of colonies that were owned by the British. The Second Great Awakening, which is more pertinent to this research, reached its peak early in the 19th century. During the Second Great Awakening there was a dramatic swell in evangelical church membership occurred in denominations like the Baptists and Methodists, whose ministers were the leaders of the movement. Carus–Wilson is sister to Petrie, and wrote this book for the purpose of ensuring that her sister was remembered and honored by the community. The chapter being examined is entitled, "A Winter in Lahore", and details Petrie's first arrival to India and her mission work thereafter. The audience of this text can be identified as a variety of individuals involved in the Protestant Christian religion. It is evident that this book is written with the intent of praising missionaries, especially brave females like Irene Petrie. Many members of the church community during this time were very interested in learning about the bravery and dedication of the inspiring missionaries. These individuals most likely loved reading books such as this to learn more about the missionaries who dedicated their lives to God in hopes of converting the uncultured, barbaric Indian people. It is reasonable to assume that these individuals were also the ones who helped support such dangerous missionary endeavors spiritually, if not also financially. By showing all the accomplishments of Petrie, Carus–Wilson is able to exemplify a missionary success story, which further increases the support of the missionary field. Gailey And Culbertson: Book Review Authors, Gailey and Culbertson in chapters 1–7 indicated that for many people, mission and missions mean almost the same thing and are often used interchangeably. Those advocating for the use of mission felt that missions emphasized too much the human side while the singular word mission would be a needed reminder that missionary work is trying to accomplish God's mission (Gailey, Culbertson p 11). Mission is seen as the comprehensive label for the Church's response to God's calling while missions are the particular ways and organizational structures through which the Church's global outreach is carried out. It is also a blessing to do the work of the Lord. You have to be well equipped to face the different spirits that you will have to encounter. • 66. The Short Term Mission Trips Think about the poverty and problems that all countries around the world are facing today and every day. As Americans we have an urge to go into these countries to help as much as possible because of that we have begun a revolution. Americans began going on mission trips around the 1960s but did not really pick up until the 1990s. The trend grew after multiple natural disasters, Americans saw and need and went, since then short term mission trips show no sign stopping anytime soon. As the popularity of leaving our comfort zones, many people have found issues with the way the trips are led to the extent of questioning whether or not these trips are really worth the amount of money and time that they consume. Through periodicals, interviews, narratives, and articles, I will show the issues and improvements that could be made to the living situations, attitude of the Americans, and relationships that are acquired during the short term mission trips. In October of 1998, Hurricane Mitch slammed onto the coasts of multiple South American countries. Countless people lost their homes, over eleven thousand people lost their lives, and the hurricane left five billion dollars' worth of damage in its wake ("Hurricane Mitch"). This event caused a new wave of events also of short term mission trips. Americans seeing the cities torn to shreds decided to act. Dana Roberts, in her book, Christian Mission; How Christianity Became A World Religion, makes a multitude of statements and provides very useful insight into how mission, specifically Christian mission, has historically been engaged through politically charged issues. Throughout this paper, I will use several of her examples to explain how Christianity has wiggled its way into the form of mission throughout the world. Examples will be show as to how some mission is indeed, following the statement that Jeremy Besset made in his class, COS Mission 423 in the spring of 2016 that the goal of God's mission is the restoration of creation to the shape in which God originally made it. The paper will also address areas where mission is not necessarily ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Counties were calling for a moratorium on western missionaries. It is only obvious why this occurred. The issues once again stemmed around many of the western missionaries attitudes that their ways were the ways for all. The young churches in some of the areas such as Asia, African and Latin America wanted to develop their own ways of doing things. The "missionary go home" movement included receiving money from western cultures. These churches that wanted to venture out on their own without the western control put blame on "missionary racism, paternalism, and colonialism." What many western missionaries began to figure out was "they were powerless without indigenous partners who could express the gospel in their own framework." With that being said, the western missionaries who decided to spread the gospel and to do God's work, based on God's agenda did, in fact, serve a very good purpose in spreading the gospel. Throughout the history of time, there have been missionaries who have been very successful in spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ. • 70. Missionary Trip To America Research Paper By attending the missionary trip to South Africa, I have touched the lives of many just as they have for me in their own ways. However, they may not even realize that they have changed my life for the better. Some touches are like a ripple in the water; blending and mixing to create a beautiful harmony. Others are like a splash. They transform people's lives with grace, mercy, and forgiveness; they bring people closer. When one thinks of a mission trip, what is the general assumed illustration? A group of Christians reconstructing non–believers into religious disciples? Churches being built so that worshippers have someplace to go to interact with Christ? For me, a mission trip can be that or something small, like we seemed to do while recently visiting Southern Africa. Visiting South Africa provided an extraordinary experience for me. What is the purpose of this when we can just read scriptures or listen to preachers from the comfort of our homes? We go to church for fellowship, discipleship, and for evangelism. Evangelism is all about spreading the gospel to the world, which the church helps to do firsthand. The gospel has a lot of teachings, but they cannot all be summed up by the church. Mr. Brown is a more effective Christian Missionary than Reverend Smith. Mr. Brown is willing to make an effort to understand Igbo's beliefs. He didn't try to tell them what they believed in was wrong. Mr. Brown made the people of Umuofia have a feeling of growth again. He told them that "everything was possible." I loved Pastor White–the things that he taught in church even though I did not understand them all. I loved it when he preached because excitement filled the air–the dancing and the shouting in the church! Pastor White was God to me. Everything he did, I supposed it is what God would do had He stood before us, as did this man. Looking back, Pastor White was prophet, seer and revelator in my mind– not that I knew what those words meant at the time. Personally, I did not know God. I knew that Auntie said there was a being called God. Based on her description I believed it! Moroni, I learned, knew that I, and others like me, would be looking for acceptance. He included in his portion of the record the reason why church was important for me by inscribing how it worked in his day expressing that "the church did meet together oft... to speak one with another concerning the welfare of their souls." Truly, going to church has been my salvation from the time I was a pup–kid! My Auntie started it all with Pastor White. I have a testimony of attending church before I really knew God! Church helped foster the culture of faith in my life and prepared me for later life–events that would lead me to God. Others in the church exhibited the pastor's resolve for inclusion.
