Asylum Seekers Persuasive Speech
Within this world, there will always be conflicts. There will always be persecutions and there will
always be discrimination, based on race, religion or gender. In these instances, there will inevitably
be innocent people affected. People that must, out of fear, leave behind the places they love, the
possessions they own and the people they know, all to be safe. Around the world today, there are
almost 900,000 asylum seekers, all fleeing from their home country, in search for a better life. What
exactly do we mean by an asylum seeker? The term asylum seeker refers to a human being seeking
refuge from hardship or persecution. So if Australia is the 'land of fair go' why are we so narrow–
minded when it comes to the issue of asylum seekers? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Obviously we don't seem to be much of a humanitarian, decent country if this is how we treat those
who need our help. The government is so fixated on stopping the boats, when instead they could be
stopping the incrimination of asylum seekers in the Australian community, caused by asylum
seekers being seen as a political issue instead of a humanitarian one. Politicians use terms such as
'deviant individuals' and 'illegal immigrants' in the attempt to criminalise and demonise asylum
seekers, scaring the country into believing that they are terrorists wanting to corrupt the Australian
way of life. Footage of immigration minister Scott Morrison addressing asylum seekers detained on
Manus Island and Nauru is frightening. He informs asylum seekers that they are where they are
because "you entered Australia illegally", that "you will be here for a very, very long time", that
"you will never enter Australia" and that "I urge you to think carefully about your next decision and
to make a decision to get on with the rest of your life and to not remain here and take the option to
go back to the country from which you've originally come." Mr Morrison, they did not come here
illegally. International law allows those fleeing persecution to right to

Asylum Seekers In Australia
Where to Next?
The Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court ruling that Australia's detention of asylum seekers on
Manus Island is illegal and that the centre must close has once again raised in Australian society the
very divisive issue of asylum seekers and their treatment. Commentaries following the Supreme
Court decision have portrayed Australia's approach to asylum seekers as inhumane and uncaring.
With continual political, humanitarian and media attention, the histrionics surrounding the issue are
rife and many of the crucial facts as to Australia's response to asylum seekers and the purpose for
our offshore processing centres long forgotten. It's time to restore a factual basis and balance to the
discussion. Can Australians be proud of our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The establishment by the Australian Government of offshore processing of asylum seekers on
Manus Island in Papua New Guinea and similarly in Nauru was a direct action to prevent this. By
making it clear internationally that anyone arriving without a visa in Australia by boat would have
no chance of being settled in Australia it removed the financial incentive for people smugglers. It
ensured that people smugglers had no product to sell. It was aimed at preventing people embarking
on a trip across dangerous seas with the high risk of death. The success of this approach cannot be
denied. In 2007–2008, while the Howard Government's Pacific Solution was in place, only 25
asylum seekers travelled by boat to Australia. In 2010, when the policy changed and asylum seekers
were transferred to Australia, 5000 people travelled by boat to Australia to seek asylum – a 19900%

Cosi Fan Tutte Essay
..Year 12 English Essay..
Nowra's play is set in a 'burnt out theatre'. Discuss the importance of setting and imagery in
conveying Nowra's ideas in Cosi.
The burnt out theatre in Nowra's play 'Cosi' represents the life inside an asylum, a life that the
characters know all too well. Life inside an asylum is portrayed as a dark, cold and isolated place,
where the outside world is not often talked about and for others almost doesn't exist. Most of the
characters cannot handle reality but for Nowra is is about exposing the hard times and the difficult
lives of the patients. Lewis is fresh out of university and took on a job as a play director at the
asylum, but is a bit unsettled when he first inspects the theatre that they will be ... Show more

Doug hates them because he likes to be naturally high all the time. Zac likes them because
everything passes like he's in a dream or limbo. I think I'm a naturally addictive personality. I like
what they give you here, because not to be on drugs, whatever sort, is like being in limbo for me.
Drugs make me feel sort of living. Completely opposite for Doug.' (Pg36–37) Non of the patients
would be in the institution if they could cope with the outside world.
The asylum introduces a new world to Lewis, one that is far from his own life,'Asylums are the most
inefficient places on this earth.'(pg 58) One that will challenge him to be more outspoken, more
attentive and more of a leader. This is shown when Roy tries to do Lewis' job for him and complains
about Lewis' directions. 'Couldn't direct a poofter.' (Pg10) Lewis gets emotionally attached to the
patients and more or less throws his relationship and education out the window to help fulfill their
dream, 'Cosi Fan Tutte'. 'It's not the fact that you've let me down, Jerry, it's more the fact that you've
let everyone down. [He looks at the theatre] This theatre could have been ringing with the music of
the spheres, instead of that, a dreadful silence has descended upon us.'– Roy. Lewis helps them come
out of their shells and see their true self worth.
Nowra's setting of the burnt out theatre has a big role in the lives of the patients, it shows the
conditions that the patients lived in before Lewis discovered them

Persuasive Essay On Asylum Seekers
Asylum Seekers are people who escape their home and country to due threats to their life. These
people need all the support and compassion they need yet why are we not allowing people to come
to Australia? Is Australia not a country where we look after the needy, disadvantaged and the
vulnerable?
In 1951, Australia signed the UN Refugee Convention which defines a refugee as a person who is
outside their country of nationality, and has a fear of being mistreated because of his or her race,
religion or nationality. Thus, it appears deceitful that we sign the convention yet turn our backs
against the asylum seekers and assert we cannot help them.
This means that Australia is a signatory in the to the Refugee Convention of 1951, meaning that ...

As Australians, the possibility that these asylum seekers, who land on our shores travelled by boat,
are terrorists is highly unlikely. The distance from that most asylum seekers travel from is more than
11,000 kilometres. If a terrorist decided to attack our country, wouldn't there be far better methods
than to risk their lives in the dangerous oceans. It is disappointing to see that some Australians are
claiming all asylum seekers as terrorists, however this is not the case many of these asylum seekers
are genuine refugees who risk their lives hoping for a better life, and leave their past behind.
Visualise that you are in the shoes of one of the Asylum Seekers. They travelled by boat with their
family to get to Australia to escape a threat to their lives; would you do the same thing? How would
you feel if people from Australia did not let you in and turned their backs on you? You would feel
horrible, realising that after travelling for weeks onto to realise that there was no point. This is what
asylum seekers out there are feeling. They want to live in Australia, they want a happy life and feel

Pros And Disadvantages Of Asylum
I. Asylum is granted only in cases of political offences and not to common criminals.
II. Asylum is granted in accordance with the laws and usages of the state of refuge, and it is for the
latter to appreciate whether the offence committed by the refugee is a political offence or a common
crime.
III. The territorial state may request the departure of the refugee from its territory and the state of
refuge may then require the former state to deliver a safe conduct enabling the refugee to leave the
country safely.
IV. The state which granted asylum sometimes, with the same end in view, requests that a safe–
conduct be issued to refugee.

Asylum on Humanitarian grounds: Asylum in a foreign embassy or legation is a subject which
affords a good illustration of the change and development of the rules of international law. In
modern times, it is asserted, the right to asylum, if it were generally recognized, would tend to
constitute an abuse. It would interfere with good government. The practice of asylum is 'even looked
on with a tolerant eye' and the personnel of a foreign legation are not very glad to use this right. To
the diplomatic agent concerned the practice is nothing but a burden. But the practice is defended on
humanitarian grounds. Motives of humanity exclude a rigid refusal to receive a man who may be in
peril of his life, but the general rule now is to limit the reception of such political refugees to cases
where the person received is in instant or imminent personal

Asylum Seekers In Australia
The asylum seeker "debate" is a contentious topic in Australian media. According to The Universal
Declaration of Human Rights, it is considered an inherent right for every individual worldwide, "to
seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution" (United Nations, 2014). Article 14 is
listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is accepted by many nations as the
international standard of basic human rights and liberties. This report will assess the extent of
Australia's violation of these international standards, and consider their national approach to the
treatment of refugees and individuals seeking asylum. It will provide evidence to expose the

Consequently the Australian Government has the legal requirements to ensure that the human rights
of individuals seeking asylum (engaging under the countries jurisdiction) are respected and
protected, under their obligation to numerous international treaties . These treaties specify the right
to not be detained arbitrarily. Additionally, as a signatory party to the Refugee Convention, Australia
has agreed to a principle known as the principle of non–refoulement , whereby they are obligated to
ensure that asylum seekers, who fulfil the definition of a refugee, are not turned back to their origin
country where their liberties are threatened (Refugee Council of Australia, 2011).
Under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), The Convention against
Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) and the
Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Australia must not to return people or send people to
third countries where they would face a violation of their human rights; applying to both refugees

Male Dominance over Female characters in John Harwood's novel, The Asylum
Today's society perceives women to be stronger and dominant individuals in comparison to men,
although, in reality, there are numerous circumstances in which men exhibit more power and control
over the important decisions in women's lives. In his novel, The Asylum, John Harwood portrays the
ways in which men exert power over women through the relationships between Rosina and her
father as well as Dr. Straker and Georgina. Through the characters of Rosina and Georgina,
Harwood depicts that women face many insecurities which ultimately causes the relationships ...

Rather than admitting her true feelings, Rosina gives her consent for the alliance in order to please
her father due to her fear of him, exemplifying that her diffident personality in the novel leads to the
tenuous bonds between them both. Furthermore, Rosina's father's obedience leads him to become
very stern towards Rosina's freedom as "Your [Rosina's] duty is to obey me, and you will learn to
like him [Mr. Bradstone] because I wish it... Until then, as I say, you are to remain outdoors: I have
given orders to ensure that you do. Disobey me in this, and you will be confined to your room"
(135–136). Thomas's ascendancy over his daughter's decisions is evident as he is very strict and
intimidating, Rosina must obey commands in order to live with him or else there are bound to be
dire consequences. Instead of fighting for her rights and freedom, Rosina feebly agrees to her
father's instructions, thus reinforcing the one–sided relationship between both father and daughter.
Moving on, Georgina and Dr. Straker's bond also begins to diminish as Dr. Straker's dominance over
Georgina's confinement at Tregannon Asylum eventually leads to the loss of control over her
decisions. First and foremost, at the asylum, Georgina wakes up to find her

Personal Narrative: Overbrook Asylum
It was a gray day. Unable to pierce the layers of powdery black skies along with the fog, the sun did
not shine. The thick mist that was not really rain, and not really fog covered the southeastern corner
of New Jersey. Just like most days in the area surrounding the Overbrook Asylum, it was daunting.
On the outside, Overbrook was a welcoming place, as far as sanatoriums go, where patients were
treated with care along with respect; the inside was very different. Hired on at the asylum as a nurse
in May of 1910, I commenced my duties and was eager to be able to lend a helping hand to the
people in need. What made people tick or to what made people think the way they did had always
interested me. The hospital provided me a living area for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Governments Enact Laws Governing Refugee And Asylum...
Governments enact laws governing refugee and asylum seekers based on political factors. Ties
between the country of origin and the country of asylum, national security and current event are
some of the factors that cause governments to enact laws for political reasons. As a result, countries
will use certain criteria to accept different flows of refuges that will foster a policy of discrimination.
Policies enacted for political reasons do not always reflect the social climate of the country, but
more times than not the social factors and the political factors are aligned with the same ideologies.
Using the country of origin in the evaluation process is the most conventional method of identifying
ties between countries of origin and the country of asylum, acknowledge national security threats as
well as deal with current events. Every application process requires applicants to state their country
of origin. "Close political links between the governments of a country of possible asylum and the
country of origin make people afraid to ask for asylum in the relevant country of destination"
(Havinga and Bocker, 1999). Applicants know that the friendship between the two countries is
bound to result in a denial of asylum. The country of asylum would not want to embarrass the
country of origin. In the countries that a friendship is evident, asylum is almost certainly denied
because a "bestowal of refugee status upon asylum seekers implies that the sending government

It is widely accepted that Governments are primarily responsible for guaranteeing the basic human

support and protection – often it may not have been there in the first place. Without the assistance of
other States this vulnerable group of individuals can be open to persecution and violations of their

back the Asylum Seekers than to process them onshore in Australia. The Criminal Code 1995 would
be the most effective legislation in this case. Section 73 of the Commonwealth Criminal Code

Asylum Crisis Essay
Across the globe there has been a massive influx of refugees seeking refuge and help. This is in a
large part due to the extreme violence occurring in the Middle East, but it also stems from people
leaving their native countries because of poverty, religious beliefs, or other things that put them at
risk. The nations of Europe have been hit extremely hard with incoming refuges. This makes sense,
seeing how close they are to the middle east. What may be surprising is that Canada is also having
many problems arising because of the amount of refuges coming into the country. In this paper we
shall examine the problems stemming from the refuges in Canada and consider some ways that
these problems may be solved. To start we need to understand ... Show more content on

For each person who claims asylum in Canada, the government spends between $15,000 and
$20,000 (Forrest 2017). Considering just how many people are coming in and filing for asylum, that
is quite a substantial amount of money. Moreover, this means that money that could have been used
for other government programs to help the natural citizens is now being diverted towards this group
of people. As for terrorist attacks, this is a much smaller problem. From 2014 to 2017, there have
only been 6 terrorist attacks, none of which were on a massive scale (Press 2017). What's more is
that for the most part, terrorist attacks are not committed by refugees. In fact, the odds of a person
being killed by a refugee in a terrorist attack is 1 in 3.6 billion (Nichols 2017). You are more likely
to be struck by lightning twice (1 in 9 million) then to be killed by a refugee terrorist. Now the
question is begin brought up about how are the refugees affecting the unemployment rate? Well to
start off let's look at Alberta. In 2017, nearly 80% of the refugees who settled in Alberta had found
employment and this isn't including the ones who started their own businesses (Stark 2017). Now
this is not the same for every province in Canada obviously, but it does show that the refugees can

Australia's Asylum-Seeker Policy Analysis
What is the true cost of Australia's asylum seeker policies?
Australia's policies in regard to asylum seekers and refugee processing, are viewed as very
controversial, and often inhumane by the international community (Lock, Quenault & Tomlinson
2002, p.37). To discuss this policy, I will apply an external analysis. In order to decide whether this
policy is seen as good or bad, through a social, economic and human rights perspective.
The policy originated in 1992 where asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Australia, are permitted
to mandatory detention (Manne 2016). This policy expanded in 2001 to the 'Pacific Solution', where
those deemed 'unlawful citizens' are to be kept in offshore mandatory detention in countries such as
Papua New Guinea, Manus Island and Nauru. However, the costs of this would be covered by the
Australian government (Henderson 2014, p.1163–1165). Because of this, numbers of asylum seekers
accepted into Australia significantly decreased (Lohana, Khaskhely, Khan, & Razzaq 2016, p.175).
Post 9–11 this idea was well supported as the perception arose that asylum seekers are 'queue
jumpers', and others even associating them as 'terrorists' (Lock, Quenault & Tomlinson 2002, p.39).
People also believed that boat arrivals were unworthy of resettlement, and would freeload off
Australia welfare and resources (Lohana, Khaskhely, Khan, & Razzaq 2016 p.177).

Why Are Asylum Seekers Be Allowed In Australia
Asylum seekers
Asylum seekers are not illegal, it is a human right to seek asylum by boat in Australia, and this is
shown by the UN refugee convention and Australian migration act 1958. Thousands of asylum
seekers have asked to be protected over the past decade. The main reasons why so many asylum
seekers are coming to Australia is because war, civil UN rest and persecution. 1000 asylum seekers
have died trying to get to Australia over the past decade and 27 people have died in the Australian
detention centres over the past 12 years.
My view
I believe that asylum seekers should be allowed into the country. I think all women who have
children should not be but in detention centres, and they should be first priority to enable them
access to a safe place. However if they are coming into our country they need to follow our rules. I
believe that the nature and context of asylum seekers is an economic and historical. ... Show more

An asylum seeker is a person who has fled from their country but is not yet accepted as a refuge.
Their refugee status is processed by the United Nations high commissioner for refugees or a
government that is a participant to the United Nations refuge conventions. They decide whether they
are in danger, or if they are trying to get into the country for free, in that case the government does
not have to follow the convention relating to the status of refugees.
Why do asylum seekers come to Australia?
Asylum seekers come to Australia, because for some people coming to Australia, it is the closest

Creative Story : A Short Story
As Thanksgiving was coming to a close. Two figures left a warm, cozy house. The aroma of many
foods drafted out the door before it slammed shut. The figures was a boy and a girl both closely
related but not so. The girl had blue eyes and blonde hair with pale skin while the boy had hazel
eyes and brown hair and tan skin. The male of the duo was called Noah ,while the girl was called
April. As they left the proximity of the house, they decided to explore the neighborhood. So off they
went looking at interesting things that caught their eye and skipping over what didn't. As they
rounded the corner, Noah saw a gigantic pile of leaves and no kids in sight. "Come on," He said."
Let's go and play in it." However, April said that she did not have a good feeling about the pile of
leaves. After a couple of minutes of pleading her to jump in with him, she was tired of his whiny
voice so she agreed. They backed up a couple of meters and they started to run. Closer and closer
until they jumped. As soon as there bodies impacted the pile, leaves began to flutter about with wind
unseen. With the impact of two bodies the ground started to shift and was beginning to make a
maniacal screech. They looked at each other alarmed and tried to get up and leave. However, before
they could the ground under them gave way. Into the hole they went, and with a bump unto a giant
slide they went. April looked down and saw the end was not going to come anytime soon.
They both saw a light when they neared the end. Noah got off the slide first and helped April off the
slide. Noah thought " she was right" as they looked around the place where they landed. They crept
closer and closer to light and the door where it was coming from. Noah slowly put his hand out and
slowly reached for the door knob. April said," don't open the door, let's find a way out instead." "
come on, nothing bad will happen." said Noah and he pulled the door open and they only found that
light spilled out. He stepped into the doorway and said see nothing bad however April saw a figure
out of the corner of her eye, she turned and only saw Darkness where the figure stood. She turned
and looked at Noah. April told Noah that they have to get out of this place no one asked

Mental Health Issues For Asylum Seekers
The issue of asylum seekers recently was reignited, with the dramatic increase in the number of
illegal boats arriving in Australia. From the 30th of September 2013, there were a reported 6,403
people in closed detention, this number including 1,078 children. It is not surprising from these high
detention rates and poor living standards that between January 2011 and February 2013 that there
were 4,313 reported incidents of actual, threatened or attempted serious self–harm in these
immigration detention facilities. From 12 deaths that occurred between the 1st of July 2010 and the
20th of June 2013 6 of these have been found by coroners to be suicides (Triggs, 2013). These
statistics are incredibly alarming, especially when not much action is being taken to prevent not only
mental illness but also the consequences of prolonged mental illness – suicide. The purpose of this
report is to analyse and scrutinize the reason why mental health issues for asylum seekers are
becoming an issue in Australia, and find out what exactly is being done to combat this ever–growing
issue in Australia.
An asylum seeker is a person who has fled their own country and applied for protection as a refugee.
As an asylum seeker their experience is extremely different to that of a Migrant. A Migrant chooses
to leave their home country, and can choose where to go and when they might return to their home
country, whereas, an asylum seeker or refugee are forced to flee their country for their own safety,

act to shut down detentions centres by the government. These refugees are unable to contact the

government has refused to help these people out of what the Government placed them in the first

Asylum Seekers In Australia Essay
Asylum seekers are people who have left their home country to find asylum in another country as a
political refugee. Now in Australia, asylum seekers are being forced to detention centres by the
Australian government. Citizens of the Australian community are deciding whether asylum seekers
should be allowed to become residents in Australia. Asylum seekers should be given asylum in
Australia because they have not committed any crimes and Australia takes a minimum number of
asylum seekers in a year compared to other underdeveloped countries. Furthermore, asylum seekers
have greatly contributed to the Australian society.
The Australian government had signed The Refugee convention but are now not following the
fundamental articles in the convention. The Refugee convention is a series of articles that state how
to treat and help refugees and asylum seekers. Article 31 of the Refugee convention clearly states
that refugees should not be penalised for arriving without valid travel documents and how they
arrive at the country i.e by boat. If the person is seeking asylum, the action is not considered illegal.

Political Asylum : A Common Incident For The Western...
Political asylum is a common incident for both the western developed countries and the Third World
countries. Bangladesh is also going through the trend of political asylum for last few decades. For
discussing the political economy of the political asylum of Bangladeshi people, we have to have a
clear concept about political economy, political asylum and the nexus between two of them first.
Political Economy: Political economy means the study of different economic theories and methods
that influence political ideology. In a broader sense, political economy is the nexus between
economics, law and politics and how concerned institutions work to develop in various social and
economic system, such as socialism, capitalism, and communism, and also is an systematic
approach or analysis of how public policy is formulated and implemented. (Investopedia, 2016)
Political Asylum: According to the Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and
International Human Rights Law, the political asylum means providing shelter of that people who
are frightened to live in their own country or badly treated because of their religion, political
opinions, membership of a particular social group or social activities, personal lifestyle and sexual
orientation. (Wikipedia, 2014). These people given political asylum are naturally called as refuges
but they are not economic refugees who move towards rich countries from a poor country only for
economic reason, in search of living and

The Issue Of Asylum Seekers Has Been Considered As One
The issue of Asylum seekers has been considered as one of the controversial issues in Australia due
to the implementation of the Federal governments' harsh and stringent policy against boat refugees,
who flee from their countries because of violence or persecution. It is stated that this hard line
approach aims to curb the influx of illegal immigrants thereby making Australian Immigration
System credible and strong (Anderson & Iggulden 2016). According to Refugee Convention 1954,
Australia, a signatory under United Nation(UN) Refugee Agency, is regarded as one of the generous
country in dealing with the protection and rights of refugees and has created a meritorious history of
accepting asylum seekers from all over the world (Refugee ... Show more content on

Besides this, it also meant to analyze and scrutinize people whether they are following an orderly
queue or not (Cox 2015).
However, it is argued that that as one of the signatories of the Refugee Convention to the United
Nation (UN), Australia has a moral obligation to protect the human rights of all asylum seekers,
despite the reasons for their arrival and whether they arrive with or without a valid visa (Australian
Human Rights Commission 2015). Hence it is clear that being a signatory of Refugee Convention
Laws, the opposition has a legal commitment to guarantee the safety of asylum seekers. Another
point worth noting is that when compared to the resettlement of refugees in Australia (57,362) to
other countries, the top10 countries hosting refugees were in third world countries ; Turkey (2.5
million), Pakistan(1.6 million) ,Lebanon(1.1 million)and the remaining countries were in Africa. It
is noticeable that, the resettled refugees accounted for about.99% of the global total of 14 million
people and Australia has ranked 26th overall and 46th in terms of GDP (ABC News 2016).
Some people believe that asylum seekers are jumping out of the queue to come to Australia to seek
asylum. However, it is truly a misconception that the people seeking asylum are queue jumpers. It is
necessary to point that there is no orderly 'queue' to the resettlement of refugees. Only a

Why Do Asylum Seekers Enter Australia Essay
Ask yourself this, if we were on a plane and it broke down with everyone being stuck on an island.
Would the government not try to find us? To save our lives and bring us back to a better place where
there is food, shelter and an overall better living environment. Then why not look for asylums
seekers out there? An asylum's seekers life here in Australia is another life saved from war, conflict
and other disasters. Asylum seekers should be able to come into Australia through boat and by any
means necessary as something that is an act of humanity and not an act of the law, rules and
regulations. Because they don't have time to wait around and be saved by someone. We do not get to
decide whether or not their life can be here but we do get a say about it! So let's all make a
difference. The main reasons for me bearing this opinion is one of three. For one, Asylum seekers
should be able to enter Australia on a boat because they are trying to get away from war and

Social construction theorists suggest that identity differences are categories constructed by social
rather than biological processes. Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often
dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia's
current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of colonial
invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play and
linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but varying
conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is
considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a
transient grasp of elusive 'Australianness' in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is
not, thereby degrading ideals of multi–cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia's postcolonial
desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian 'Other' underpins the politicisation of the 'boat
people' phenomenon. This relates closely to Chomsky's assertion that intentionally inducing fear of a
"terrifying enemy" is a standard device used "to whip the domestic population of any country into

Refugees And Asylum Of Refugees
Hundreds of thousands of people every year are forced to leave their homes. Refugees are defined as
people who have to leave their homes in order to survive and be safe. Natural disasters and the folly
of man cause masses of people to flee their native countries into neighboring territories to wait until
it is safe to go back home or to relocate for good. A refugee refers to a person or people who, outside
their country of origin, are unable to save themselves from their country or are unable to return there
for fear of persecution (Jastram, 2001). What makes a refugee a refugee? Who deserves refugee
status? A common misconception is that refugees and asylum seekers are the same things. The right
to seek asylum was granted to people by the 1951 Geneva Convention. The 1967 Protocol expanded
the notion of refugee displacement from just Europe to the rest of the world following World War II
(Wettergren, 2014. 566). The terms are very different. An Asylum Seeker is defined as a person who
has left their country and has applied for recognition as a refugee in another country but is still
waiting for the decision on their application (Refugee 2011). When people are forced to leave their
own countries and immigrant to another one, they are considered asylum seekers until their requests
for refugee status has been accepted. After their application is accepted, they are officially
recognized as a refugee. The right to determine whether or not a person is a refugee is not reserved

Genocide, poverty, religious intolerance, misogynism, these are only a few of the atrocities the

death or refuge. So the obvious choice is refuge. They stowaway on ships or airplanes, pack into

People worry about population control, jobs, crime, disease, and any other social problem people
decide to connect immigrants with. When someone applies for refuge in a country this is called
"asylum seeking" ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). European countries are popular for this because
they usually have stronger human rights foundations ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). Unfortunately,
because of anti–terrorism efforts, it has become increasingly hard for people to seek asylum in these
countries ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). Many asylum seekers in the past have gained citizenship,
and have become normal members of society, but often times their only hope is for repatriation
("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). A problem faced by both host nations and refugees is that the
accommodations given at the detention camps are meant to be temporary. They are only meant to
hold the persons until the conflict in their country has stopped, but millions of refugees around the
globe have been detained anywhere from 10 to almost 60 years (S. Feldman 2010). One of the
largest refugee camps in the world is located in Dadaab, Kenya. The conditions in the camp are

The Importance Of Social Work For Refugees And Asylum Seekers
Social Workers have a duty, professionally and morally to support refugee children and asylum
seekers.
Social workers have a professional and moral duty to ensure that services are provided to those who
most need it. The duty that Social workers have toward Refugees and asylum seekers, particularly
children is strong but not often met. People's wellbeing is a key ideal within social work and is
strongly represented within the Care Act 2014, the earlier Children's Act 2004 is also clear on the
protection of children's rights in the UK. In the essay there will be a discussion on how in some
areas the statute is not strong enough to allow Social Workers to work properly, but also how there
needs to be changes regarding social work focus on refugees.
Recently, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has campaigns to help reform the UK's current
law on family. The law only recognises parents or spouses and civil partners as family. A child
refugee may have an older sibling, or more extended family such as an uncle but they would not be
allowed into the country under the Family Reunion rules. The dangers for children trying to reach
family in the UK are high and it leaves them at risk of exploitation, 78% of adolescents face some
form of exploitation whilst travelling the Central Mediterranean route to Europe, UNICEF (2017).

Theme Of Isolation In The Asylum
In various works of literature, characters that are isolated serve to convey various meanings and
illustrate various arguments. Throughout the novel The Asylum, the author John Harwood places
characters in contexts of isolation to demonstrate a change in their thoughts, actions, and emotions.
The contextual isolation of Georgina Ferrars and Rosina Wentworth exemplify the ways that their
notions change and their feelings build with exposure to isolation. When both protagonists
experience forms of isolation, they contemplate and re–evaluate their actions and decisions, which
in turn lends themselves to a change in their various perceptions and emotions.
Georgina Ferrars finds herself in isolated contexts throughout the novel, developing her thoughts
and emotions. Firstly, during the course of time she spends at the Tregannon House, Georgina builds
a strong relationship with Frederic Mordaunt, the doctor's secretary. When Mr. Mordaunt leaves the
asylum at once and returns one day, Georgina can't handle the hate she built for him over those
months. Once Mordaunt leaves the conversation, Georgina "remained on the bench, shaking with
emotion and realising, as [her] anger subsided, how foolishly [she] had behaved" (Harwood, 98). As
Georgina is exposed to this important moment of isolation, she registers that Frederic has inner
feelings for her, and brings back their relationship. After being left alone for a few moments,
Georgina contemplates her actions and immediately regrets

seems serene though "The ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass, torn
everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings"
(Golding 10) later it shows dark things. The boys were happy at first and were having fun since
there were no rules. They swim in the water and play in the sand like they think it is a vacation. On

The Issue Of Asylum Seekers
While the issue of asylum seekers has mainly challenged Australia's political power and resources,
the debate is mostly ethical and putting human dignity first is integral. Whilst both political parties
have very similar policies in regards to the topical issues, which are in essence going partially
against the Church's stance and human dignity. Australia has the economy, land, low population and
living style to support more asylum seekers/refugees, especially when we have a ranking of 48 in
the world on the scale of how many refugees we currently have accepted.
With both political parties having fairly similar opinions on the refugee situation, only having slight
differences, only a few differences separate the two, with labor wanting to increase the refugee
intake per year to almost double of what the coalition currently has in place which is 13,750 and
labor plan to raise it up to 27,000. (Australian Labor Party) Also labor also plans to reinstate the
UN's refugee convention, which Abbott is currently undermining, which is technically international
law. In one way this breach of international law Abbot has broken is refusing to take refugees that
has been allocated to Australia by the UN, for it is overstepping the coalitions humanitarian intake

noises of those who are screaming for someone to get them out but no one heard them. No one ever
does. There were many cells but in one cell, lying on the ground, was Clarisse McClellan. "Three
days or was it six?" said Clarisse, "I wonder what kind of day today will be? Maybe they'll take us
out to look at butterflies and enjoy the surrounding. I wonder if the fireman noticed I was gone?"
Startled by a loud noise, Clarisse got up. She knew it was time, time, time, she thought, she always
wondered why people followed time. "Wake up! Get out!" The guards yelled.
Like the others, she was waiting for the doors to open. The time was six o'clock in the morning.
Everyday, Clarisse and the other "patients" were told to get up and get food. Each day was different
than the day before, one day you'd be tested the other you'd be strolling around the courtyard.
Clarisse was no different than the others, in actuality everyone was alike but declared different from
the outside world. "Hey Clarisse! Over here!" yelled a boy.
The boy, Floyd, he was as old as Clarisse but unlike her, he had been in the asylum for a few weeks
before Clarisse was brought in. They had become friends by bumping into each other on the way to
get food, they shared the same likeness. Always thought why not how

Analysis Of John Hughes 's ' The Tale Of Asylum '
Published in March 2016, Asylum is a complex, fractured novel that hovers on the border of reality
and unreality. It is the most recent work by author John Hughes, whose novel The Idea of Home
received the Premier's Award for Nonfiction in 2005. The tale of Asylum is intriguing, a Kafkaesque
allegory that binds the strangeness felt by refugees seeking asylum, with an image of purgatory
borrowed from classical works of fiction. It is split into two acts, and within these acts, multiple
fragments. The reader encounters excerpts from reports and inquiries as well as 'Legends' of both
'The Doors' and 'The Place'. The landscape of the text is split into three places, 'Sanctuary', the
'Doors', and 'Place'. Its protagonists are Baba and Ash, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In this respect, Hughes alienates readers who prefer a linear narrative plot, with characters and
motives that are easy to decipher. Ed Wright (2012) incurred the same issue upon reading Hughes'
earlier novel The Remnants. He argues that there are books 'that can only be fully appreciated once
the real terror of one's own mortality has been felt'. His own experience reading Proust before he
was able to full appreciate it returned upon reading The Remnants (Wright 2012). The confusing
nature of the text can be, admittedly, difficult at times to follow. Only upon a second reading can the
true meaning of the text be gaged. The first chapter of Asylum, which introduces Baba, sets the tone
for the novel. 'The Official', as Hughes calls the character, asks for Baba's name. The reader is able
to see inside Baba's mind, as he comments that he 'only knew a handful of their words' (Hughes
2016, 3). From the outset there is uncertainty and mystery, as the reader does not know the identity
of the Official, just their title, or the true identity of Baba other than what he tells the Official. Baba
then ventures into the outside world, where he happens upon the 'Sanctuary', a place that is 'a temple
built to resemble a ruin' (Hughes 2016, 13). It is here that he meets Ash, a barber who wears a white
robe, and who tells Baba when he arrives that he will wear the black. They cut the hair of their
clients and listen to their stories, before the client

Asylum Seekers Persuasive Speech

  • 1. Asylum Seekers Persuasive Speech Within this world, there will always be conflicts. There will always be persecutions and there will always be discrimination, based on race, religion or gender. In these instances, there will inevitably be innocent people affected. People that must, out of fear, leave behind the places they love, the possessions they own and the people they know, all to be safe. Around the world today, there are almost 900,000 asylum seekers, all fleeing from their home country, in search for a better life. What exactly do we mean by an asylum seeker? The term asylum seeker refers to a human being seeking refuge from hardship or persecution. So if Australia is the 'land of fair go' why are we so narrow– minded when it comes to the issue of asylum seekers? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Obviously we don't seem to be much of a humanitarian, decent country if this is how we treat those who need our help. The government is so fixated on stopping the boats, when instead they could be stopping the incrimination of asylum seekers in the Australian community, caused by asylum seekers being seen as a political issue instead of a humanitarian one. Politicians use terms such as 'deviant individuals' and 'illegal immigrants' in the attempt to criminalise and demonise asylum seekers, scaring the country into believing that they are terrorists wanting to corrupt the Australian way of life. Footage of immigration minister Scott Morrison addressing asylum seekers detained on Manus Island and Nauru is frightening. He informs asylum seekers that they are where they are because "you entered Australia illegally", that "you will be here for a very, very long time", that "you will never enter Australia" and that "I urge you to think carefully about your next decision and to make a decision to get on with the rest of your life and to not remain here and take the option to go back to the country from which you've originally come." Mr Morrison, they did not come here illegally. International law allows those fleeing persecution to right to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Asylum Seekers In Australia Where to Next? The Papua New Guinea's Supreme Court ruling that Australia's detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island is illegal and that the centre must close has once again raised in Australian society the very divisive issue of asylum seekers and their treatment. Commentaries following the Supreme Court decision have portrayed Australia's approach to asylum seekers as inhumane and uncaring. With continual political, humanitarian and media attention, the histrionics surrounding the issue are rife and many of the crucial facts as to Australia's response to asylum seekers and the purpose for our offshore processing centres long forgotten. It's time to restore a factual basis and balance to the discussion. Can Australians be proud of our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The establishment by the Australian Government of offshore processing of asylum seekers on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea and similarly in Nauru was a direct action to prevent this. By making it clear internationally that anyone arriving without a visa in Australia by boat would have no chance of being settled in Australia it removed the financial incentive for people smugglers. It ensured that people smugglers had no product to sell. It was aimed at preventing people embarking on a trip across dangerous seas with the high risk of death. The success of this approach cannot be denied. In 2007–2008, while the Howard Government's Pacific Solution was in place, only 25 asylum seekers travelled by boat to Australia. In 2010, when the policy changed and asylum seekers were transferred to Australia, 5000 people travelled by boat to Australia to seek asylum – a 19900% ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The burnt out theatre in Nowra's play 'Cosi' represents the life inside an asylum, a life that the characters know all too well. Life inside an asylum is portrayed as a dark, cold and isolated place, where the outside world is not often talked about and for others almost doesn't exist. Most of the characters cannot handle reality but for Nowra is is about exposing the hard times and the difficult lives of the patients. Completely opposite for Doug.' (Pg36–37) Non of the patients would be in the institution if they could cope with the outside world. The asylum introduces a new world to Lewis, one that is far from his own life,'Asylums are the most inefficient places on this earth.'(pg 58) One that will challenge him to be more outspoken, more attentive and more of a leader. This is shown when Roy tries to do Lewis' job for him and complains about Lewis' directions. 'Couldn't direct a poofter.' (Pg10) Lewis gets emotionally attached to the patients and more or less throws his relationship and education out the window to help fulfill their dream, 'Cosi Fan Tutte'. 'It's not the fact that you've let me down, Jerry, it's more the fact that you've let everyone down. [He looks at the theatre] This theatre could have been ringing with the music of the spheres, instead of that, a dreadful silence has descended upon us.'– Roy. Lewis helps them come out of their shells and see their true self worth. Nowra's setting of the burnt out theatre has a big role in the lives of the patients, it shows the conditions that the patients lived in before Lewis discovered them ... • 7. Persuasive Essay On Asylum Seekers Asylum Seekers are people who escape their home and country to due threats to their life. These people need all the support and compassion they need yet why are we not allowing people to come to Australia? Is Australia not a country where we look after the needy, disadvantaged and the vulnerable? In 1951, Australia signed the UN Refugee Convention which defines a refugee as a person who is outside their country of nationality, and has a fear of being mistreated because of his or her race, religion or nationality. Thus, it appears deceitful that we sign the convention yet turn our backs against the asylum seekers and assert we cannot help them. As Australians, the possibility that these asylum seekers, who land on our shores travelled by boat, are terrorists is highly unlikely. The distance from that most asylum seekers travel from is more than 11,000 kilometres. If a terrorist decided to attack our country, wouldn't there be far better methods than to risk their lives in the dangerous oceans. It is disappointing to see that some Australians are claiming all asylum seekers as terrorists, however this is not the case many of these asylum seekers are genuine refugees who risk their lives hoping for a better life, and leave their past behind. Visualise that you are in the shoes of one of the Asylum Seekers. They travelled by boat with their family to get to Australia to escape a threat to their lives; would you do the same thing? How would you feel if people from Australia did not let you in and turned their backs on you? • 9. Pros And Disadvantages Of Asylum I. Asylum is granted only in cases of political offences and not to common criminals. II. Asylum is granted in accordance with the laws and usages of the state of refuge, and it is for the latter to appreciate whether the offence committed by the refugee is a political offence or a common crime. III. The territorial state may request the departure of the refugee from its territory and the state of refuge may then require the former state to deliver a safe conduct enabling the refugee to leave the country safely. IV. The state which granted asylum sometimes, with the same end in view, requests that a safe– conduct be issued to refugee. 3. As such a conference was convened at Caracas in 1954, which drew up an Inter–American Convention on Diplomatic asylum. Asylum on Humanitarian grounds: Asylum in a foreign embassy or legation is a subject which affords a good illustration of the change and development of the rules of international law. In modern times, it is asserted, the right to asylum, if it were generally recognized, would tend to constitute an abuse. It would interfere with good government. The practice of asylum is 'even looked on with a tolerant eye' and the personnel of a foreign legation are not very glad to use this right. To the diplomatic agent concerned the practice is nothing but a burden. But the practice is defended on humanitarian grounds. Motives of humanity exclude a rigid refusal to receive a man who may be in peril of his life, but the general rule now is to limit the reception of such political refugees to cases where the person received is in instant or imminent personal ... • 13. Asylum Seekers In Australia The asylum seeker "debate" is a contentious topic in Australian media. According to The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is considered an inherent right for every individual worldwide, "to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution" (United Nations, 2014). Article 14 is listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is accepted by many nations as the international standard of basic human rights and liberties. Consequently the Australian Government has the legal requirements to ensure that the human rights of individuals seeking asylum (engaging under the countries jurisdiction) are respected and protected, under their obligation to numerous international treaties . These treaties specify the right to not be detained arbitrarily. Under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), The Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Australia must not to return people or send people to third countries where they would face a violation of their human rights; applying to both refugees and non–refugees (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2014, para. 2). Male Dominance over Female characters in John Harwood's novel, The Asylum Today's society perceives women to be stronger and dominant individuals in comparison to men, although, in reality, there are numerous circumstances in which men exhibit more power and control over the important decisions in women's lives. In his novel, The Asylum, John Harwood portrays the ways in which men exert power over women through the relationships between Rosina and her father as well as Dr. Straker and Georgina. Rather than admitting her true feelings, Rosina gives her consent for the alliance in order to please her father due to her fear of him, exemplifying that her diffident personality in the novel leads to the tenuous bonds between them both. Until then, as I say, you are to remain outdoors: I have given orders to ensure that you do. Disobey me in this, and you will be confined to your room" (135–136). Thomas's ascendancy over his daughter's decisions is evident as he is very strict and intimidating, Rosina must obey commands in order to live with him or else there are bound to be dire consequences. Instead of fighting for her rights and freedom, Rosina feebly agrees to her father's instructions, thus reinforcing the one–sided relationship between both father and daughter. The thick mist that was not really rain, and not really fog covered the southeastern corner of New Jersey. Just like most days in the area surrounding the Overbrook Asylum, it was daunting. On the outside, Overbrook was a welcoming place, as far as sanatoriums go, where patients were treated with care along with respect; the inside was very different. Hired on at the asylum as a nurse in May of 1910, I commenced my duties and was eager to be able to lend a helping hand to the people in need. • 19. Governments Enact Laws Governing Refugee And Asylum... Governments enact laws governing refugee and asylum seekers based on political factors. Ties between the country of origin and the country of asylum, national security and current event are some of the factors that cause governments to enact laws for political reasons. As a result, countries will use certain criteria to accept different flows of refuges that will foster a policy of discrimination. Policies enacted for political reasons do not always reflect the social climate of the country, but more times than not the social factors and the political factors are aligned with the same ideologies. Using the country of origin in the evaluation process is the most conventional method of identifying ties between countries of origin and the country of asylum, acknowledge national security threats as well as deal with current events. Every application process requires applicants to state their country of origin. "Close political links between the governments of a country of possible asylum and the country of origin make people afraid to ask for asylum in the relevant country of destination" (Havinga and Bocker, 1999). Applicants know that the friendship between the two countries is bound to result in a denial of asylum. The country of asylum would not want to embarrass the country of origin. • 27. Asylum Crisis Essay Across the globe there has been a massive influx of refugees seeking refuge and help. This is in a large part due to the extreme violence occurring in the Middle East, but it also stems from people leaving their native countries because of poverty, religious beliefs, or other things that put them at risk. The nations of Europe have been hit extremely hard with incoming refuges. This makes sense, seeing how close they are to the middle east. What may be surprising is that Canada is also having many problems arising because of the amount of refuges coming into the country. In this paper we shall examine the problems stemming from the refuges in Canada and consider some ways that these problems may be solved. To start we need to understand ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For each person who claims asylum in Canada, the government spends between $15,000 and $20,000 (Forrest 2017). Considering just how many people are coming in and filing for asylum, that is quite a substantial amount of money. Moreover, this means that money that could have been used for other government programs to help the natural citizens is now being diverted towards this group of people. As for terrorist attacks, this is a much smaller problem. From 2014 to 2017, there have only been 6 terrorist attacks, none of which were on a massive scale (Press 2017). What's more is that for the most part, terrorist attacks are not committed by refugees. In fact, the odds of a person being killed by a refugee in a terrorist attack is 1 in 3.6 billion (Nichols 2017). You are more likely to be struck by lightning twice (1 in 9 million) then to be killed by a refugee terrorist. Now the question is begin brought up about how are the refugees affecting the unemployment rate? Well to start off let's look at Alberta. In 2017, nearly 80% of the refugees who settled in Alberta had found employment and this isn't including the ones who started their own businesses (Stark 2017). Now this is not the same for every province in Canada obviously, but it does show that the refugees can be a positive influence on the economy. • 29. Australia's Asylum-Seeker Policy Analysis What is the true cost of Australia's asylum seeker policies? Australia's policies in regard to asylum seekers and refugee processing, are viewed as very controversial, and often inhumane by the international community (Lock, Quenault & Tomlinson 2002, p.37). To discuss this policy, I will apply an external analysis. In order to decide whether this policy is seen as good or bad, through a social, economic and human rights perspective. The policy originated in 1992 where asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Australia, are permitted to mandatory detention (Manne 2016). This policy expanded in 2001 to the 'Pacific Solution', where those deemed 'unlawful citizens' are to be kept in offshore mandatory detention in countries such as Papua New Guinea, Manus Island and Nauru. However, the costs of this would be covered by the Australian government (Henderson 2014, p.1163–1165). Because of this, numbers of asylum seekers accepted into Australia significantly decreased (Lohana, Khaskhely, Khan, & Razzaq 2016, p.175). Post 9–11 this idea was well supported as the perception arose that asylum seekers are 'queue jumpers', and others even associating them as 'terrorists' (Lock, Quenault & Tomlinson 2002, p.39). People also believed that boat arrivals were unworthy of resettlement, and would freeload off Australia welfare and resources (Lohana, Khaskhely, Khan, & Razzaq 2016 p.177). ... • 33. Why Are Asylum Seekers Be Allowed In Australia Asylum seekers Asylum seekers are not illegal, it is a human right to seek asylum by boat in Australia, and this is shown by the UN refugee convention and Australian migration act 1958. Thousands of asylum seekers have asked to be protected over the past decade. The main reasons why so many asylum seekers are coming to Australia is because war, civil UN rest and persecution. 1000 asylum seekers have died trying to get to Australia over the past decade and 27 people have died in the Australian detention centres over the past 12 years. My view I believe that asylum seekers should be allowed into the country. I think all women who have children should not be but in detention centres, and they should be first priority to enable them access to a safe place. However if they are coming into our country they need to follow our rules. I believe that the nature and context of asylum seekers is an economic and historical. ... • 39. Mental Health Issues For Asylum Seekers The issue of asylum seekers recently was reignited, with the dramatic increase in the number of illegal boats arriving in Australia. From the 30th of September 2013, there were a reported 6,403 people in closed detention, this number including 1,078 children. It is not surprising from these high detention rates and poor living standards that between January 2011 and February 2013 that there were 4,313 reported incidents of actual, threatened or attempted serious self–harm in these immigration detention facilities. From 12 deaths that occurred between the 1st of July 2010 and the 20th of June 2013 6 of these have been found by coroners to be suicides (Triggs, 2013). These statistics are incredibly alarming, especially when not much action is being taken to prevent not only mental illness but also the consequences of prolonged mental illness – suicide. Hence it is clear that being a signatory of Refugee Convention Laws, the opposition has a legal commitment to guarantee the safety of asylum seekers. Another point worth noting is that when compared to the resettlement of refugees in Australia (57,362) to other countries, the top10 countries hosting refugees were in third world countries ; Turkey (2.5 million), Pakistan(1.6 million) ,Lebanon(1.1 million)and the remaining countries were in Africa. Importantly, social categories are bounded by and are often dichotomised in both the private and public psyche. Markus et al further argue that Australia's current social and political responses to difference are situated within the broader context of colonial invasion, Indigenous oppression and the White Australia Policy. In the political power play and linguistic treatment of the emblematically powerless reveals not only core party values, but varying conceptions of Australian identity. This is especially recognisable when political debate is considered in the context of three distinct time periods and political situations, demonstrating a transient grasp of elusive 'Australianness' in a society defined not by what is desirable, but what is not, thereby degrading ideals of multi–cultural egalitarianism. Put simply, Australia's postcolonial desire to control its borders and regulate the Hegelian 'Other' underpins the politicisation of the 'boat people' phenomenon. This relates closely to Chomsky's assertion that intentionally inducing fear of a "terrifying enemy" is a standard device used "to whip the domestic population of any country into line" behind contentious ... Essay On Asylum Seekers I created this article on asylum seekers and Australia's refusal to cooperate in the acceptance of these refugees as an attempt to raise awareness the "issue" of asylum seekers. It is also intended to examine the reasons why people are asylum seekers in the first place. I hope that "We've boundless plains to share: Terms and conditions apply" will provide a factual, emotive and relative read. This is the third lie, the lie to the Home Office. 1.1 Motivation It is fair to say that my rationale for selecting this area of research was of course my own interest and learning but in addition, that this may help to add greater depth of understanding, tolerance in an area that is often used to discredit and negatively label asylum seekers and refugees. It also appears from my preliminary searches that there is dearth of information on this subject. 1.2 Research Aims Objectives I felt I needed to know more to understand the reasons why asylum seekers may lie, and what function and purpose do these lies serve. Silence also serves a number of purposes and at certain times of our lives, such as when one is a teenager it is considered as natural way of operating. • 59. Refugees And Asylum Of Refugees Hundreds of thousands of people every year are forced to leave their homes. Refugees are defined as people who have to leave their homes in order to survive and be safe. Natural disasters and the folly of man cause masses of people to flee their native countries into neighboring territories to wait until it is safe to go back home or to relocate for good. A refugee refers to a person or people who, outside their country of origin, are unable to save themselves from their country or are unable to return there for fear of persecution (Jastram, 2001). What makes a refugee a refugee? Who deserves refugee status? A common misconception is that refugees and asylum seekers are the same things. The right to seek asylum was granted to people by the 1951 Geneva Convention. The 1967 Protocol expanded the notion of refugee displacement from just Europe to the rest of the world following World War II (Wettergren, 2014. 566). The terms are very different. An Asylum Seeker is defined as a person who has left their country and has applied for recognition as a refugee in another country but is still waiting for the decision on their application (Refugee 2011). When people are forced to leave their own countries and immigrant to another one, they are considered asylum seekers until their requests for refugee status has been accepted. After their application is accepted, they are officially recognized as a refugee. The right to determine whether or not a person is a refugee is not reserved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has been a profound honour to be invited to address you about the eloquently breach of basic human rights asylum seeker face while being detained in our shores. Mandatory detention should be abolished as it causes indiscriminate health risk. Instead, the Australia government should allow asylum seekers to settle into the community. We should be viewing asylum seekers as a humanitarian issue instead of a political one. In 1951 we stood tall and proud with our green and gold colours as we signed the non refoulement and become a part of the refugee convention. Their only means of escape are death or refuge. So the obvious choice is refuge. They stowaway on ships or airplanes, pack into cars, or just start walking to a country where they have a small hope of not only surviving, but living a normal life. Most of them will end up in detention camps, and most will end up in camps where the conditions are very poor. Some will apply for asylum and be in camp for an undetermined amount of time. Others will not and could be held for even longer, maybe indefinitely. The effects of detention on the human mind are debilitating, and a child ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People worry about population control, jobs, crime, disease, and any other social problem people decide to connect immigrants with. When someone applies for refuge in a country this is called "asylum seeking" ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). European countries are popular for this because they usually have stronger human rights foundations ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). Unfortunately, because of anti–terrorism efforts, it has become increasingly hard for people to seek asylum in these countries ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). Many asylum seekers in the past have gained citizenship, and have become normal members of society, but often times their only hope is for repatriation ("Refugees and Asylum" 2011). A problem faced by both host nations and refugees is that the accommodations given at the detention camps are meant to be temporary. They are only meant to hold the persons until the conflict in their country has stopped, but millions of refugees around the globe have been detained anywhere from 10 to almost 60 years (S. Feldman 2010). One of the largest refugee camps in the world is located in Dadaab, Kenya. The conditions in the camp are horrendous. • 65. The Importance Of Social Work For Refugees And Asylum Seekers Social Workers have a duty, professionally and morally to support refugee children and asylum seekers. Social workers have a professional and moral duty to ensure that services are provided to those who most need it. The duty that Social workers have toward Refugees and asylum seekers, particularly children is strong but not often met. People's wellbeing is a key ideal within social work and is strongly represented within the Care Act 2014, the earlier Children's Act 2004 is also clear on the protection of children's rights in the UK. In the essay there will be a discussion on how in some areas the statute is not strong enough to allow Social Workers to work properly, but also how there needs to be changes regarding social work focus on refugees. Recently, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has campaigns to help reform the UK's current law on family. The law only recognises parents or spouses and civil partners as family. A child refugee may have an older sibling, or more extended family such as an uncle but they would not be allowed into the country under the Family Reunion rules. The dangers for children trying to reach family in the UK are high and it leaves them at risk of exploitation, 78% of adolescents face some form of exploitation whilst travelling the Central Mediterranean route to Europe, UNICEF (2017). Social Workers have a duty here to protest the UK's laws, and the decision of the Government not to join the EU's relocation scheme for Refugees. They did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Theme Of Isolation In The Asylum In various works of literature, characters that are isolated serve to convey various meanings and illustrate various arguments. Throughout the novel The Asylum, the author John Harwood places characters in contexts of isolation to demonstrate a change in their thoughts, actions, and emotions. The contextual isolation of Georgina Ferrars and Rosina Wentworth exemplify the ways that their notions change and their feelings build with exposure to isolation. When both protagonists experience forms of isolation, they contemplate and re–evaluate their actions and decisions, which in turn lends themselves to a change in their various perceptions and emotions. Georgina Ferrars finds herself in isolated contexts throughout the novel, developing her thoughts and emotions. Firstly, during the course of time she spends at the Tregannon House, Georgina builds a strong relationship with Frederic Mordaunt, the doctor's secretary. When Mr. Mordaunt leaves the asylum at once and returns one day, Georgina can't handle the hate she built for him over those months. Once Mordaunt leaves the conversation, Georgina "remained on the bench, shaking with emotion and realising, as [her] anger subsided, how foolishly [she] had behaved" (Harwood, 98). As Georgina is exposed to this important moment of isolation, she registers that Frederic has inner feelings for her, and brings back their relationship. After being left alone for a few moments, Georgina contemplates her actions and immediately regrets ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The island seems serene though "The ground beneath them was a bank covered with coarse grass, torn everywhere by the upheavals of fallen trees, scattered with decaying coconuts and palm saplings" (Golding 10) later it shows dark things. Persuasive Speech On Asylum Seekers is a derogatory term given to asylum seekers who arrive in Australia by boat, without obtaining a valid visa or other form of authorisation such as a passport. Most people arriving by boats are facing desperate and life threatening situations in their country of origin, and fear a form of persecution such as torture, murder and imprisonment. These people are often so desperate to flee their corrupt or dangerous countries that they risk their lives to travel to Australia by boat. The Issue Of Asylum Seekers While the issue of asylum seekers has mainly challenged Australia's political power and resources, the debate is mostly ethical and putting human dignity first is integral. Whilst both political parties have very similar policies in regards to the topical issues, which are in essence going partially against the Church's stance and human dignity. Australia has the economy, land, low population and living style to support more asylum seekers/refugees, especially when we have a ranking of 48 in the world on the scale of how many refugees we currently have accepted. With both political parties having fairly similar opinions on the refugee situation, only having slight differences, only a few differences separate the two, with labor wanting to increase the refugee intake per year to almost double of what the coalition currently has in place which is 13,750 and labor plan to raise it up to 27,000. In one way this breach of international law Abbot has broken is refusing to take refugees that has been allocated to Australia by the UN, for it is overstepping the coalitions humanitarian intake policy. • 77. Analysis Of John Hughes 's ' The Tale Of Asylum ' Published in March 2016, Asylum is a complex, fractured novel that hovers on the border of reality and unreality. It is the most recent work by author John Hughes, whose novel The Idea of Home received the Premier's Award for Nonfiction in 2005. The tale of Asylum is intriguing, a Kafkaesque allegory that binds the strangeness felt by refugees seeking asylum, with an image of purgatory borrowed from classical works of fiction. It is split into two acts, and within these acts, multiple fragments. The reader encounters excerpts from reports and inquiries as well as 'Legends' of both 'The Doors' and 'The Place'. The landscape of the text is split into three places, 'Sanctuary', the 'Doors', and 'Place'. Its protagonists are Baba and Ash, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this respect, Hughes alienates readers who prefer a linear narrative plot, with characters and motives that are easy to decipher. Ed Wright (2012) incurred the same issue upon reading Hughes' earlier novel The Remnants. He argues that there are books 'that can only be fully appreciated once the real terror of one's own mortality has been felt'. His own experience reading Proust before he was able to full appreciate it returned upon reading The Remnants (Wright 2012). The confusing nature of the text can be, admittedly, difficult at times to follow. Only upon a second reading can the true meaning of the text be gaged. The first chapter of Asylum, which introduces Baba, sets the tone for the novel. 'The Official', as Hughes calls the character, asks for Baba's name. The reader is able to see inside Baba's mind, as he comments that he 'only knew a handful of their words' (Hughes 2016, 3). From the outset there is uncertainty and mystery, as the reader does not know the identity of the Official, just their title, or the true identity of Baba other than what he tells the Official. Baba then ventures into the outside world, where he happens upon the 'Sanctuary', a place that is 'a temple built to resemble a ruin' (Hughes 2016, 13). It is here that he meets Ash, a barber who wears a white robe, and who tells Baba when he arrives that he will wear the black.
