If you love the way your skin looks when you are tan in the middle of the summer, and you like to cover up blemishes and other skin flaws with a
tan, a spray tan is a great option. Getting a spray tan can boost your mood and help you stay healthy over time, instead of lounging in the sun without
protective sun screen. Here are a few great benefits with a spray tan.
Slimming and Contouring
With shading and applying different tones of bronze to the body, it's possible for the spray tan professional to help you look slimmer. The contouring

the appearance of target trouble areas like the thighs and hips.
Eliminate Sagging Skin and Age Spots
Exposure to the sun, or UVA and UBV rays in the tanning bed, can lead to dry and wrinkled skin and can cause age spots. This can make the skin
look much older than it is, it causes peeling and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Speech About Skin Cancer
There was once a time, when hearing that someone is suffering from cancer was a rare thing, because cancer was not a prominent disease. However,
today, most people know someone who is suffering from cancer in some part of their body. Skin cancer has become one of the most prevalent types of
cancer.
What is interesting is that while there are several things that people do not know about skin cancer, there are just as many myths associated with it as
well. Here are some of the most common myths, related to skin cancer:
People with dark skin are not at risk for sun damage or skin cancer:
It is considered that people with lighter skin are more prone to skin cancer, while people with darker skin are safe. Although people with darker skin
are comparatively safer, in no way is their skin completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even when the sun is hidden behind the clouds, the ultraviolet rays are able to penetrate and they can cause much damage to your skin. While you
might not feel the heat of the sun as much, there is still the chance of you getting a sunburn. This is why, even on a cloudy day, you need to make sure
that you wear plenty of sunscreen and have protective clothing when stepping out.
All sunscreens are the same:
While most people think that sunscreens that have a sun protection factor or SPF of 30 is the best, there are actually several levels to this protective
lotion too. Understanding the same is the first step towards being sun safe. For starters, if you do not apply ample amount of sunscreen or apply it
incorrectly, then even the most powerful sunscreen might not be enough. If you are someone who does not like to slather on sunscreen, then it would
make sense to invest in a higher grade. People who spend greater amount of time in the sun and tend to sweat a lot will have to apply more sunscreen.
It is only UVB radiation that can lead to skin damage and

Persuasive Essay : How The Sun Can Save Your Skin
Are you the type of person that likes to soak up the sun on a nice day? Do you like to go to tanning salons to get a nice tan for any occasion? Or do
you like to spend summer days hanging around the pool? What do these activities have in common? When doing some research, I have learned that all
of these activities can cause harm to your skin. According to the AmericanCancer Society there has been an estimated 95,000 cases of skin cancer in
the United States so far this year, and an estimated 13,000 cases of death for both men and women. I am not trying to tell you that you should never
go outside, but I am trying to tell you of some of the dangers the sun can cause your skin if not properly protected. Many people are not aware of the
harms that the sun can cause, and do not protect their skin. I would like to tell you some basic information about the sun, the ways its Ultraviolent rays
can harm your body, and some ways to protect your skin from harm.
The sun is a vital part of human existence and we wouldn't be where we are today without it, it is unavoidable. The sun is what keeps so many living
things going and provides us with a natural source of Vitamin D which helps keep your bones healthy. However, the sun can also be harmful, the sun
emits Ultraviolent, or UV Rays. There are three different types of UV Rays, UVA, the most common form of sun exposure, UVB, less sun exposure
but more intense, and UVC, which is blocked by the Earth's ozone layer. Although we cannot see

Indoor Tanning and Cancer
Guaranteed brown, beautiful and golden skin in only a few tans! Indoor tanning promises and creates a beautiful tan in only a few sessions. The
result from this tan is dark and clear skin that makes a person feel and look better. No wonder this craze is so popular. Who wouldn't want to look
like they just came back from the Caribbean with beautiful skin? I mean having tan skin does make a person look better right? This question is
obviously a personal opinion, but this new habit of tanning indoors has become a growing concern. There are many long term effects to indoor tanning
that are harmful to a person. But most people do not understand this because the short–term effects are the most satisfying. ... Show more content on

The basic component in tanning is ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light, whether produced by a tanning unit or by the sun, contains two components;
UVA and UVB. These are the two types of ultraviolet radiation that are known to negatively effect the skin. UVA has a longer wavelength that
causes photoaging and can produce some melanomas. UVB has a shorter wavelength that also causes photoaging and has been implicated in skin
cancers. Photoaging is the premature aging or deep wrinkling of skin. Indoor tanning units utilize both forms of light waves to tan a person with a
minimized risk of sunburn. Tanning outdoors does not give you this option because the sun omits every type of UV rays, so a person is more likely
to burn. A person's skin epidermis consists of two layers: The germinative layer and the horny layer. Another name for the germinative layer is the
"living layer." And another name for the horny layer is the "dead" layer. When exposed to ultraviolet light, melanocytes in the germinative layer
produce melanin that is absorbed by surrounding cells. Melanin is a dark pigment found in the pigment–bearing cells of the skin, and melanocytes are
epidermal cells capable of synthesizing melanin. This creates a protective barrier from ultraviolet light reaching deeper into the layers of the skin. The
pale pink melanin granules are stored in the core of keratin cells. UVA darkens the melanin,

Essay on The Dangers of Tanning Booths
Imagine going to a tanning salon and asking information on the safety of indoor tanning. The employees tell you that it is safe, in fact, they encourage
the use, saying it is good for you. Imagine six months later going to your doctor for a checkup and having your doctor tell you he is concerned about
something you thought was a beauty mark. You come to find that you have malignantmelanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer at the age of 27. After
doing some research it was obvious that going to this tanning salon was the cause. You have just taken a glimpse into the life of Lisa Whitehead who
shared her story to prevent something like this from happening to others. This essay will analyze issues related to Indoor Tanning. It will employ the...

They confuse people about the real risks of indoor tanning. Many people with Vitamin D deficiency heard that brief exposure to UV light was good
for them. The tanning industry ran with that. They used this as an advertising claim and lured many people inside. Such carefully crafted claims are
what convince people that tanning beds are safe.
Another false claim that the tanning industry advertises is that tanning beds prevent cancers, such as prostate, lung, breast, colon, ovarian, and
pancreatic cancers. These claims, based on research conducted by William Grant, PhD, a NASA scientist whose work is partially funded by the Indoor
Tanning Association, were dismissed by the dermatology community. "It is dangerous to mislead the public into thinking sunlight is a safe and
effective 'cure' for other health conditions," says Raymond L. Cornelison Jr., MD, president of the American Academy of Dermatology.
Tanning salons turn their attention toward cancer prevention and turn their backs on causing skin cancer. Lavine wrote, "The JNCI review noted that
indoor tanning can increase a fair–skinned individual's risk of developing melanoma by 55%. And it can take a mere 10 indoor–tanning sessions to
cause precancerous DNA damage, reports a recent review study by a Kings College London researcher (Lavine)." Melanoma is not the only form of
skin cancer. Tanning beds play a role in the formation of other skin cancers as

The Pros And Cons Of Tanning
Tanning has become increasingly popular over years. The question is it beneficial or a bad business deal to start. The truth is tanning is convenient
method utilized by many individuals to gain skin tone and color, builds self– esteem and promote relaxation. It can be beneficial in many aspects of our
lives as well as an alternative to more harmful exposure but there are always risks at everything you do. Dermatologists today are against it for the
simple fact that they believe it causes skin cancer. According to NCI (National Cancer Institute) exposure to UV radiation–whether from the sun or
from artificial sources such as sunlamps utilized in tanning beds–increases of developing skin cancer. IRAC (International Agency for Research on...

Being capable of doing this would be beneficial to some people because it doesn't take as long and sitting out in the sun. There is a controlled dosage
of the ultraviolet rays to reassure the consumer does not receive a large amount of UV ray, these dosages should be spread out over several sessions. A
great aspect of tanning is clients get privacy in their own booth. Weight, being too white, tan lines and uncomfortable bathing suits are not an issue with
the tanning beds. Another advantage to tanning is it is all year round. It doesn't matter if it is snowing or raining outside you can still get the benefit of
a captivating skin color.
Indoor tanning beds can have a negative impact on your skin. It can cause premature wrinkles, rashes, and can cause cancer. Tanning is like a slow
cooker that can slowly affect your skin and your aging process. When tanning it is suggested to ask the salon staff the recommended exposure limits
for your skin type. Always precautious when you decide to tan for example if you do not wear goggles then it can damage your ocular perceivers such
as losing your vision. Wearing indoor sunscreen would be a good precaution for your skin and you should consider your medical history for going
tanning. Secondly, knowing the type of bulbs when tanning is very important. The tanning lamps release ultraviolet rays your body can tan. They
contain: inert gasses, a little mercury, and phosphorus coating.

The Dangers of Tanning Essay
Spring is finally here, and Spring Break and the Senior Prom are around corner. The teenagers and the college kids are planning a drive to the
tanning salons or a day at the beach. The media has instilled in women that tan skin is a sign of youth and sex appeal. Some people go to the
tanning salons and others spend hours outside in the sun to achieve the sun goddess look. Many don't realize the dangers that come with the sun or a
box with light bulbs that has more UVA radiation than the sun does. From fair to dark skin, people are being destroyed by the same UVA radiation
that gives people that "sexy glow". Being in the sun is inevitable, but people can still protect their skin from many forms of skin cancer by doing the

For they realize the dangers of tanning beds. Tanning beds generally emit 93% to 99% UVA radiation, which gives off thirteen times more radiation
than the sun. It's easy for some people, who have read the facts, to stop tanning in tanning beds, but others have fallen prey to it and they won't stop
because it's too enjoyable. Research has found that tanning beds seems affects more than just the skin. During tanning sessions, exposure UV light
seems to elevate people's mood and may be addictive. Those who are addictive are called tanorexia. (Linke) According to the American Academy of
Dermatology Association, skin that has been exposed to UV light generates and releases beta–endorphin, which is an opium–like chemical.
Beta–endorphin is best known for supplying the sense of well being, or a "runner's high" that accompanies energetic exercise. (Ruscitto) Tanning beds
can put people's mood in high spirits. A person, who tans frequently, who tries to stop tanning is hard for them, because when they do, they have
symptoms of withdrawal including nausea and jitters. An infrequent tanner experiences no withdrawal symptoms. People who are addictive can't stop,
and are speeding straight towards danger. Twenty minutes in a tanning bed is like spending a whole day at the beach with no sun block. UVA rays
penetrate deep into the skin tissue, changing the DNA structure. Scientists discovered that tanning beds are as dangerous as arsenic and mustard gas.

What is UV radiation?
Before one can discuss harmful effects of tanning equipment and increased sun exposure, one must be familiar with the components of ultraviolet light
and how affects the skin. Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet (UV) light: UVA and UVB. UVArays consist of longer wavelengths that penetrate
deep into the dermal layer of skin. Limited exposure to UVA rays causes skin to tan; however, most experts agree that overexposure to UVA can lead to
other long–term skin damage. UVB rays' wavelengths are much shorter, affecting the outermost layers of skin. UVB rays are known as the "burning
rays" and are considered more dangerous. Tanning beds and sun lamps generally emit 93% to 99% UVA... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tanning beds, therefore, have the power to control exposure time and the ratio of UVA to UVB rays for a "perfect balance" (http://www.shop.net
/suncity/). Since tanning beds filter out most of the burning UVB rays, chances of getting burned decrease dramatically (http://www.darquetan.com
/faq.htm). Therefore, the companies can claim that the tanning beds cannot be any more harmful than the sun.
Tanning salons also state that some UV radiation is needed for the manufacturing of vitamin D. Vitamin D certifies that a constant level of calcium
remains in the blood and controls its absorption. In an advertisement for tanning equipment, one tanning bed company, The Beach House Tanning,
claims that the sun is the only source of Vitamin D (http://www.beachouse.com/tanning_benefits.htm). However, vitamin D is also found in foods such
as dairy products, cereal, and fish (http://shrike.depaul.edu/~vbard/vitdpg.html), and it takes far less UV radiation to obtain the necessary amount of
vitamin D than it does to get a suntan (http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/tanning.html).
In addition, tanning industries claim that UVA radiation has no harmful effects on the skin. They say that only UVB radiation can harm the outermost
layer of the skin. Since UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, then they say that tanning beds cannot cause any type of premature aging, burn the skin,
or thicken

Skin Cancer : The Common Malignancy Essay
Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States, where approximately 3.5 million cases of non–melanoma skin cancer and 75000
cases of melanoma are diagnosed each year. (American Journal of Public Health) There is around 9000 deaths for each year from indoor and outdoor

from the basal and squamous cells. To viably treat melanoma there is billions of dollars spent every year. The main source of skin tumor is tanning
inside and outside. In this day and time in reality the media impacts everybody when it comes to a tan, except particularly youngsters, to feel like they

health benefit claims such as improved appearance, enhanced mood, and increased vitamin D levels have been attributed to tanning. Furthermore, the
Indoor Tanning Association claims that 'catching some rays may lengthen your life'" (Sivamani, Crane, & Dellavalle, 2009). According to Slevin

UV radiation, you only make vitamin D for a short amount of time–staying exposed for longer periods of time doesn't increase vitamin D levels further"
(p. 58). However, there are alternative methods of tanning than sun bathing. Tanning sprays and lotions are increasing in popularity as the public has
become more educated about the dangers on tanning. Frequent use of sunscreen can help to combat some of the exposure to UV radiation. Although
it is not a miracle cure to stop all skin cancers or skin conditions, it can dramatically reduce the amount of UV radiation absorbed by the skin. For

in the United States? Congress tells people that the tax is to help pay for the treatment that an individual must have because of the harm ultraviolent
rays have on a person's skin. (New York Times) I just wonder if Congress thought about this tax to its full capacity. If Congress has not noticed the

wallets from the recession and now this. The consumer of the tanning industry is just the average person next door and we all have a neighbor that
we know who is suffering financially. When push comes to shove one will likely choose a necessity over a luxury. I just wonder is congress trying
to put the country's people in a panic. July 1, 2010 the tanning tax went into effect; a ten percent tax on all indoor tanning using ultraviolent radiation
was passed. This tax is supposed to help those that need help with skin cancer treatment. By congress taxing the tanning industry, for this reason leads
me to ask what is next. Is congress going to pass a tax for going to the beach? This tax seems like only the beginning of what is to come.

Persuasive Essay On Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer
Did you know that over 5.4 million people in the U.S. each year have a case of nonmelanoma skin cancer every year and there are new cases of skin
cancer. People that use tanning beds are at a higher risk of skin cancer. Also for the people that use SPF 15 or higher have a twenty four percent chance
of having skin aging. People that are beginners at tanning don't know how long to expose their body to the sun and don't know what happens to them
when they sunburn from overexposure or using tanning beds. When using a tanning bed there is a higher risk of skin cancer than tanning out in the
sun, but when tanning in the sun people don't know what happens to their skin when it sunburns like premature skin aging, sun spots, and wrinkles.
Tanning for children can put them at a risk for short–term or long–term eye damage. The experts believe that all types of tanning damages the skin and
there is no safe way to tan. Tanning can cause premature skin aging immune system suppression and eventual development of skin cancer. "It is
particularly important to prevent sunburns in young children by limiting sun exposure and using sunscreen or sunblock" (Gale). Unprotected skin can
be damaged by 15 minutes of sun exposure, although a sunburn is not apparent until at least 12 hour later. The parent that let their children and teens

can be considered safe" (Gale). 71 percent of tanning bed companies promote their unlimited tanning packages and will allow teenagers, and most of the
tanning places don't need the parents permission. Parents should stop promoting their children and teens to tan because parents don't know what it does

In addition, sunscreen has two major types: chemical and physical (Facts About Sunscreen 2006). The chemical sunscreens have UVB and UVA
absorbers that would lower the chance of UV radiation penetration (Facts About Sunscreen 2006). Because these chemicals are present, the sunscreen is
colorless and thin in consistency (Facts About Sunscreen 2006). In contrast, physical sunscreens, also known as sunblock, contains titanium dioxide
and zinc oxide in order to completely blocking the UV radiation (Facts About Sunscreen 2006). Because sunblock contains these ingredients, they turn
out to be much thicker and opaque compared to sunscreen (Fayed 2014). Between the two, sunscreen is more commonly used. Both sunscreen and
sunblock have SPF, but ranges differently. The SPF can range from two being the lowest and fifty being the highest referring to the ability of being
able to protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun. It is important that consumers know the difference in SPF so that they know which one can protect
the skin and last longer in order to deter the formation of skin cancers and or burns.

Persuasive Essay On The Importance Of Tanning
Introduction (Sarah) Mostly everyone in America has heard of the common pass time called tanning, but whether a person's opinion is acceptable
or rude, there is some facts they should know before they make their decisions on tanning. Tanning is very common, not only in the United States,
but also around the world(CC). Tanning is a favorite hobby for people in America. People tan outside or can go to a tanning salon, that uses
tanning beds. Tanning beds have a UV light that simulates sun rays, causing the light to help a person gains color in their skin and also helps
people's skin clear up. This topic is not a major controversial issue, but is still important to discuss, because there are people who have gotten skin
cancer from tanning too much. Many people have a different point of views on this topic because there are a vast amount of cases which involve a
teenager getting cancer, but others do not overdo it, so they do not understand why people have other views on it. There are people that find tanning
therapeutic, it might be the only option that keeps them calm and relaxes their anxiety. Also, they see changes in their skin color and texture. "My
skin clears up; I don't need as much makeup. I think I look better" (Fellingham, 2014, P. 3). Tanning can be safe with the help of tan salon workers
and very therapeutic, but also has been known to give people cancer and most of the customers are teenagers and that is not safe; bottom line a person
needs some form of light to help them to change their state of mind, whether it be tanning or plain sunlight, humans still need it. Background (Sarah)

Skin Cancer Prevention
Preventing Skin Cancer Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer. There are three main types. Squamous cell and basal cell skin cancer are
the most common. Melanoma skin cancer is the most dangerous type. Most skin cancers are caused by skin damage from exposure to ultraviolet
(UV) light. UV light comes from the sun and from artificial tanning beds. Suntans and sunburns result from exposure to UV light. Skin cancer
occurs most often in older people, but it is usually the result of damage done earlier in life. The tans and sunburns you get at any age can lead to
skin cancer in the future. To help prevent this, you can take steps to protect yourself. HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM SKIN CANCER?

Tanning Beds: Article Summary
Felts, Michael, et al. "College Students' Knowledge, Attitudes and Perceptions of Risks Regarding Intentional Sun Exposure: A 17–Year Follow–Up."

/college–students–knowledge–attitudes–and–perceptions. This article examines the risks and effects of ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds. Felts has
conducted a thorough investigation of ultraviolet radiation effects and compared the results to those of a study performed seventeen years earlier.
Specifically, both studies found that immediate effects of ultraviolet radiation are sunburns, eye damage, and a delay of the immune system. On the
other hand, the long–term effects are wrinkles, premature aging of the skin, and skin cancer. Therefore, while this article was useful for determining
the effects of using tanning beds, flaws are present in the author's research because of the lack of statistics on skin cancer caused by ultraviolet
radiation. This article is useful for the research topic to prove that the use of tanning beds has a negative effects on the body.

and allergic reactions. For reasons related to appearance and the association made between looking tan and being healthy, people always disregard the
effects that tanning beds may have on his or her body. The main limitation in this article is there is not enough supporting evidence for research. Even

Melanoma Research Paper
Melanoma
Melanoma is a very serious type of skin cancer and can be extremely dangerous if it's not taken care of properly. Melanoma usually develops in the
melanocyte cells when the skin has been exposed to ultraviolet radiation from tanning beds or from being outside in the direct sunlight for too long or
over a long period of time. When unrepaired skin DNA becomes too damaged, it can trigger a mutation in the cells which leads to the skin cells to
rapidly multiply, turning into the cancerous growths. In some cases, melanoma can form in the eyes, nose, mouth, genitals and, in rare situations, form
in the intestines (Mayo Clinic).

Skin cells normally push the new healthy cells toward the top to replace the old cells that need to be replaced but, in some cases, when the cell DNA
is too damaged then the new skin cells start to grow rapidly which turn into cancerous growths. Doctors believe that the main lead cause of melanoma
is too much exposure to UV rays that comes mostly from sunlight and tanning beds (Cancer Research UK). The Melanoma Research Foundation says
that, "approximately 90% of melanoma cases can be linked to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays..." Having blistering sunburns during early childhood
can increase the chances of getting melanoma, along with getting sunburns and excessive exposure later in life can increase risks as well. According
to the Skin Cancer Foundation, people who live in places that have more sunlight like Florida, Arizona and California have a higher chance of getting
skin cancer. Lighter skinned people who live in the colder northern states can also get skin cancer and some locations actually have a higher number of
skin cancer patients. The healthy amount of exposure to the sun is about 20 minutes to be able to get the right amount of Vitamin D required by the
body, after 20 minutes or so it would be smart to use sunscreen in order to avoid getting a sunburn. It is also smart to avoid using a tanning booth or

Benefits Of Using A Self Tanner After Getting A Sun Tan
The cells in your skin will darken after you have spent a lot of time in the sun. This is why your complexion appears darker after sun tanning. If you use
a self tanner, then you will be able to give yourself a deeper and richer tan. Your complexion may be uneven after sun tanning. However, you can use a

Difference Between Sun And Tanning Beds
The difference between the sun and a tanning bed are the amount of UVA and UVB rays that are emitted, tanning beds, use fluorescent bulbs that emit

Radiation Associated With Skin Cancer
Abstract Ultraviolet (UV) radiation associated with skin cancer is one of the most common cancers. If the skin is exposed to the sun, some humans
would have a higher risk of skin cancer. Sunscreen is a source that protects the skin, which is highly recommended to be used if your skin is sensitive
to the sunlight. This theory will show how students who attended Human Biology Lab class approach on how certain level of SPF in sunscreen can

In addition, there are questions about why do most people have a higher risk of skin cancer than others. Reasons are everyone does not have the
same skin prototype. Skin prototype is one of the leading causes in a person's risk of skin cancer (Gutierrez and Regan, 2014). People with milky
skin and fair skin have the highest risk of developing skin cancer because they are the ones who will most likely burn when the sun touches their
skin. These people are also known to have the prototype 1 or 2 skin types. However, people with darker skin types tend to not burn easily because
they have more pigmentation; and they are indeed protected from the sun. Sunscreen is a source of skin protection, which is recommended to be used
if your skin is very vulnerable to the sun (Koh, 1995). This experiment focuses mainly on the use of different levels of protection sunscreens, and the

Melanoma Effects On Skin Cancer
This year alone, 5.4 million people have had some form of skin cancer. This is the amount of people who live in Washington, D.C. Skin cancer affects
many and melanoma is just one type of skin cancer. Melanoma can be caused by hereditary genes and overexposure to ultraviolet rays.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer, but what is it, and how does it form? Well, according to the Mayo Clinic, melanoma causesDNA damage to cells
which begin to grow out of control and can eventually form a mass of cancerous cells (Mayoclinic.org). Elderly men are at highest risk, but
melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults 25 to 29 years old (ASCO). Therefore, all ages are prone to melanoma. Melanoma not only

The American Society of Clinical Oncology explains that Familial melanoma is a genetic or inherited condition where the risk of melanoma can be
passed from generation to generation (ASCO). Therefore, if both of your parents are at risk for melanoma, you automatically are too. They go on to
state that familial melanoma also refers to families in which two or more first–degree relatives have melanoma (ASCO). When a type of melanoma is
referred to as familial melanoma, know that this means someone has a risk or has developed melanoma because of their genetic relations to
someone with the risk or with melanoma. The American Society of Clinical Oncology explains this gene mutation by stating, "a parent with a gene
mutation may pass along a copy of his or her normal gene or a copy of the gene with the mutation. Therefore, a child who has a parent with a
mutation has a 50% chance of inheriting that mutation. A brother, sister, or parent of a person who has a mutation also has a 50% chance of having
the same mutation" (ASCO). Parents with the melanoma gene mutation have a 50% chance of giving it to their child, if the child does receive this
mutation, they too, have a 50% chance of passing it to their offspring. However, in recent years, studies have made it possible for parents carrying this
gene to not pass it on to their children. Scientists discovered a

Persuasive Essay On Skin Cancer
"The cause of skin cancer is, Cumulative sun exposure causes mainly basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe sunburns,

"People don't perceive that Idaho has a skin cancer problem," says Patti Moran, who manages the state's Cancer Prevention and Control program. "But
the death and diagnoses rates are very telling. We know that many Idahoans spend time in the sun taking advantage of our great outdoor recreation
opportunities. We're urging people to remember to protect their skin every time they go outside to prevent skin cancer." Another thing that us as
Idahoans do often are using tanning beds, something that I am guilty of myself. It is so cold here for majority of the year that often times people

Essay on The Evolution of Skin Tanning
The Evolution of Skin Tanning
One of Catherine's insatiable obsessions in Ernest Hemingway's The Garden of Eden is to darken her skin color. She accomplishes this by sun tanning
at every opportunity possible, and naturally, her skin turns many shades darker. Catherine's skin tanning fixation at the time the story takes place
coincides with the premiere of skin tanning as a stylish and chic fashionable pursuit.
Traditionally, tanned skin was undesirable to the public. Prior to the industrial revolution, most manual labor was done outside under the sun where
such constant exposure resulted in darker skin. Consequently, because manual labor was a staple of the lower classes, tanned skinned also became

Even though these conditions were probably worse than work outside, impoverished laborers were no longer distinguished by a dark tan. However,
the single most important occurrence that changed the world's perception on tanning forever dealt with Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, a famous French
designer, who during one summer in the 1920s vacationed on the French Riviera aboard a friend's yacht. When she returned with darkened skin,
even though the tan was probably not intended, it sent shockwaves through the fashion world, and overnight a new trend was born (History of
Tanning). If any other woman had returned with a tan, it would never have received so much attention, but it was Chanel, with her own company of
perfume, who epitomized the changing role of women in the 1920s. Women were becoming more active in all aspects of live, from the home to the
workplace to social situations (Chapter 1). Additionally, they weren't forced to wear as restrictive clothing as before, which allowed for more parts
of the body to be exposed to the sun. A tan began to symbolize the new era of dynamic women who were no longer passive and constrained by society
and previously–held standards. There was no better way to exhibit this newfound exuberance and independence than with a tan which until this point in
history was as undesirable and taboo as socially possible. In fact, tanning took on completely opposite connotations than before, as it began to stand for
a person's youth and wealth, as

The Negative Effects of Using Tanning Salons
Tall, fit, and tan... Sounds attractive? It is not to rare to encounter young teenage girls who's aims are to achieve this "perfect" image. These looks are
popularized through stars, models, and individuals that the younger population look up to. Enforcing insecurity amongst teens, advertisements portray
these ultimate, beautiful, "natural" looks. However, what they do not portray is the time, effort, and health risks involved. Unfortunately these teens do
not take into consideration the harsh circumstances that these procedures consist of. In other words, they are not aware of the after affects that will
alter their health along with their image. A large part of the population of the United States including men and women, teenage or adult, are insecure
about their body image. They're not lying when they say, "Beauty is Pain." Many of these treatments and procedures people undergo drastically
change the look of their image. Given all these considerations the use of indoor tanning salons has been a controversial topic to many people. The
essential question is, should a federal ban against the use of tanning salons by minors be enacted? Absolutely yes, minors should not be able to use the
amenities of tanning salons due to the long term affects that will disturb their well being. The negative effects of using tanning salons do not

Underage Tanning Law
Many teens today feel pressured to live up to society's standards. They believe that perfect hair, flawless makeup, designer clothes, and bronze skin
is required. This is where tanning beds come into play. About 29.5 percent of teenagers use indoor tanning devices. (Health Day News). However,
is the warm, golden glow going to be achievable any more? State Representatives are considering new restrictions, and changing existing laws, in
regards to teen tanning. These new commands will ban teens from tanning. Are these bills acceptable? Are they needed? The Senate and Assembly
of New York agreed to ban teens ages 16 years and younger from tanning beds (Precious). Lawmakers in New Jersey are adding new rules to teen
tanning; no one can tan under the age of 17. (N.J. Bans Minors from Tanning Beds). Therefore, teen tanning bed use is a very controversial topic.
Have you ever felt the "false sense of security that [you] may not feel under direct sunlight" from a tanning bed (Jeffrey)? Your body relaxes, you feel

Tanning Beds Are Becoming Popular Amongst Younger People
Tanning Beds
Tanning is becoming popular amongst younger people, possibly leading them to their death. Social media, peers, and celebrities have taught us that our
appearance is more important than our health. Tanning beds are becoming the next trend; the next cigarette. Instagram has become flooded with
images of young, fit people with an unnatural orange glow, followed by an endless stream of comments reading "goals." The cheapest, fastest and
easiest way to get a natural looking tan is to use a tanning bed. Tanning beds expose humans to extreme UV rays, deepening the shade of pigment in
the skin. Extreme UV exposure is the most common reason people get skin cancer, as if the sun wasn't enough UV exposure as is. Tanning has become
a life–threatening trend amongst the younger generation and what they don't realize is that: they need to learn to love themselves the way they were
born, they are becoming addicted to tanning and distant to their loved ones, and their lives can be taken away from tanning.
A wide majority of people are struggling with self–esteem issues and lean towards tanning beds to make them feel better about themselves. The major
influences that media portrays impact how people see themselves when they look in the mirror. The trend of using tanning beds has morphed a society
where people think those who are beautiful are the ones who are tan. Young women believe that they have to fit in with the crowd in order to be
accepted. Becky Kocon had this problem

Children Must Be More Educated About The Risks Of Sun...
Teenagers need to be more educated about the risks of sun exposure and the consequences excessive tanning can cause. Programs aimed at educating
America's youth were implemented in the early 1990's; however those programs have been unsuccessful (Geller et al., 2002). Higher rates of
sunburns tend to occur in regions where sun safety education has not been implemented (Saridi et al., 2014). The major reasons teens are at a greater
risk for developing skin cancer as adults is due to improper sunscreen use, and therefore more sunburns, as well due to the use of tanning beds (Geller
et al., 2002).
Social factors and sunscreen use. Adolescents tend to not take sun protective measures in order to tan to look more attractive to peers (Saridi et al.,
2014). Beliefs about tanned skin being more attractive have been around for many years and these beliefs need to be reshaped in order to make real
change to increase sun safety (Geller et al., 2002). Teens' views about sun tanning and teens' sun tanning actions are greatly influenced by friends'
behaviors (Mewse, Lea, Ntala, & Eiser, 2011). Teens see the positive effects of tanning such as a better appearance, much quicker than they do the
negative effects such as wrinkles and skin cancer, and it can be hard for them to relate tanning to future cancer (Hall, Jones, & Saraiya, 2001). A
common theme among many studies evaluating teens and sun tanning concluded that the main reasons teens tan is to look more attractive, fit in

The Effects Of Tanning On A Bathing Suit
The other day I was pondering the still popular, yet seemingly dangerous practice of tanning as I looked down at my chalky white legs and thought, is
the desire to tan really that mysterious? It seems obvious that people just like the way it looks to be tan. In fact, one survey of American teenagers
revealed that two thirds of them feel 'healthier' and 'more sophisticated' with a tan (qtd. in "Sun Tanning"). I know I feel better about putting on a
bathing suit if I'm not so starkly white that I worry about blinding young children. I also know that it just feels good to be in the sun. The warm
rays beating down on my back and shoulders as I work outdoors or go for a hike seem therapeutic and natural. I'll admit I've seen the inside of a
tanning booth a few times before I took a spring break trip to California and, yes, that felt good too. As I searched more deeply into the issue of why
people tan, it became apparent that despite the dire warnings there is a deeper, biological reason for the undying popularity of bronzed skin, we need
the sun. Actually, the human body is 'hard–wired' to need healthy doses of sunlight. Through our skin we process vitamin D, which is gained almost
solely from the sun's Ultraviolet B (UBV) rays. We also need the sun to regulate our hormone levels and fend off depression. In an article about the
health benefits of vitamin D, Reinhold Vieth explains that when "humans evolved at equatorial latitudes, without modern clothing and shelter, their

because of their class. The lower group had the reputation from their brown and callused skin that they had no money and worked for everything to
live. The upper class had the idea that they had to be pale and skinny to show off their wealth and riches; therefore, becoming spenders instead of

Explain The Risks Of Artificial Tanning Or Prolonged...
Riley Hill
Ms. Herring
7th Grade ELA
11/10/17
What are the risks of artificial tanning or prolonged exposure to the sun?
Tanning is when a person is really pale but when the sun rays hit your skin your skin becomes browner. You tan in the summer because that is when the
sun is out. Spray tanning is the form of self–tanning. A liquid mist is sprayed onto your body. The mist has an ingredient in it called Dihydroxyacetone
that interacts with your skin's chemistry to turn it tan or brown. Spray tans are more healthy than tanning in the sun, but they are both still bad for you.
Spray tans and Suntans are two different things. Spray tans are less dangerous than tanning in the sun. When you get a spray tan the only thing that
can happen to you is that you might get an allergic reaction. When you tan in the sun there are greater risks of skin and eye damage. Sun tanning can
give you skin cancer, Wrinkles, eye damage, and painful sunburns. Tanning beds are also really dangerous if you don't put on glasses or goggles then
you could go blind.
When you do spray tans you can have an allergic reaction but, with sun tanning the consequences are much larger. Skin cell damage from sun tanning
at the molecular level causes the development of molecules which destroys collagen, which makes the skin firm and youthful, causing premature aging
of the skin. Sun's rays can cause these things to the eyes, tearing, Pain, and Swollen eyelids, A feeling of sand in the eye Hazy, or decreased vision.
Sun damage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
You should always stay indoors for a little while then going outside all the time. You should spend 1 hour indoors and an hour outdoors. If you stay
outside for a long time then you should always put more sunscreen every 2 hours. Always put on sunscreen or sunglasses so the sun's rays don't hurt
you. That is why spray tans are more healthy than tanning in the sun, but they are both still bad for

  • 2. Speech About Skin Cancer There was once a time, when hearing that someone is suffering from cancer was a rare thing, because cancer was not a prominent disease. However, today, most people know someone who is suffering from cancer in some part of their body. Skin cancer has become one of the most prevalent types of cancer. What is interesting is that while there are several things that people do not know about skin cancer, there are just as many myths associated with it as well. Here are some of the most common myths, related to skin cancer: People with dark skin are not at risk for sun damage or skin cancer: It is considered that people with lighter skin are more prone to skin cancer, while people with darker skin are safe. Although people with darker skin are comparatively safer, in no way is their skin completely ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even when the sun is hidden behind the clouds, the ultraviolet rays are able to penetrate and they can cause much damage to your skin. While you might not feel the heat of the sun as much, there is still the chance of you getting a sunburn. This is why, even on a cloudy day, you need to make sure that you wear plenty of sunscreen and have protective clothing when stepping out. All sunscreens are the same: While most people think that sunscreens that have a sun protection factor or SPF of 30 is the best, there are actually several levels to this protective lotion too. Understanding the same is the first step towards being sun safe. For starters, if you do not apply ample amount of sunscreen or apply it incorrectly, then even the most powerful sunscreen might not be enough. If you are someone who does not like to slather on sunscreen, then it would make sense to invest in a higher grade. People who spend greater amount of time in the sun and tend to sweat a lot will have to apply more sunscreen. It is only UVB radiation that can lead to skin damage and ... • 3. Persuasive Essay : How The Sun Can Save Your Skin Are you the type of person that likes to soak up the sun on a nice day? Do you like to go to tanning salons to get a nice tan for any occasion? Or do you like to spend summer days hanging around the pool? What do these activities have in common? When doing some research, I have learned that all of these activities can cause harm to your skin. According to the AmericanCancer Society there has been an estimated 95,000 cases of skin cancer in the United States so far this year, and an estimated 13,000 cases of death for both men and women. I am not trying to tell you that you should never go outside, but I am trying to tell you of some of the dangers the sun can cause your skin if not properly protected. Many people are not aware of the harms that the sun can cause, and do not protect their skin. I would like to tell you some basic information about the sun, the ways its Ultraviolent rays can harm your body, and some ways to protect your skin from harm. The sun is a vital part of human existence and we wouldn't be where we are today without it, it is unavoidable. The sun is what keeps so many living things going and provides us with a natural source of Vitamin D which helps keep your bones healthy. However, the sun can also be harmful, the sun emits Ultraviolent, or UV Rays. There are three different types of UV Rays, UVA, the most common form of sun exposure, UVB, less sun exposure but more intense, and UVC, which is blocked by the Earth's ozone layer. Indoor tanning promises and creates a beautiful tan in only a few sessions. The result from this tan is dark and clear skin that makes a person feel and look better. No wonder this craze is so popular. Who wouldn't want to look like they just came back from the Caribbean with beautiful skin? I mean having tan skin does make a person look better right? This question is obviously a personal opinion, but this new habit of tanning indoors has become a growing concern. There are many long term effects to indoor tanning that are harmful to a person. But most people do not understand this because the short–term effects are the most satisfying. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The basic component in tanning is ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light, whether produced by a tanning unit or by the sun, contains two components; UVA and UVB. These are the two types of ultraviolet radiation that are known to negatively effect the skin. UVA has a longer wavelength that causes photoaging and can produce some melanomas. UVB has a shorter wavelength that also causes photoaging and has been implicated in skin cancers. Photoaging is the premature aging or deep wrinkling of skin. Indoor tanning units utilize both forms of light waves to tan a person with a minimized risk of sunburn. Tanning outdoors does not give you this option because the sun omits every type of UV rays, so a person is more likely to burn. A person's skin epidermis consists of two layers: The germinative layer and the horny layer. Another name for the germinative layer is the "living layer." And another name for the horny layer is the "dead" layer. When exposed to ultraviolet light, melanocytes in the germinative layer produce melanin that is absorbed by surrounding cells. Melanin is a dark pigment found in the pigment–bearing cells of the skin, and melanocytes are epidermal cells capable of synthesizing melanin. This creates a protective barrier from ultraviolet light reaching deeper into the layers of the skin. The pale pink melanin granules are stored in the core of keratin cells. UVA darkens the melanin, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Many people with Vitamin D deficiency heard that brief exposure to UV light was good for them. The tanning industry ran with that. They used this as an advertising claim and lured many people inside. Such carefully crafted claims are what convince people that tanning beds are safe. Another false claim that the tanning industry advertises is that tanning beds prevent cancers, such as prostate, lung, breast, colon, ovarian, and pancreatic cancers. These claims, based on research conducted by William Grant, PhD, a NASA scientist whose work is partially funded by the Indoor Tanning Association, were dismissed by the dermatology community. "It is dangerous to mislead the public into thinking sunlight is a safe and effective 'cure' for other health conditions," says Raymond L. Cornelison Jr., MD, president of the American Academy of Dermatology. Tanning salons turn their attention toward cancer prevention and turn their backs on causing skin cancer. Lavine wrote, "The JNCI review noted that indoor tanning can increase a fair–skinned individual's risk of developing melanoma by 55%. And it can take a mere 10 indoor–tanning sessions to cause precancerous DNA damage, reports a recent review study by a Kings College London researcher (Lavine)." The truth is tanning is convenient method utilized by many individuals to gain skin tone and color, builds self– esteem and promote relaxation. It can be beneficial in many aspects of our lives as well as an alternative to more harmful exposure but there are always risks at everything you do. Dermatologists today are against it for the simple fact that they believe it causes skin cancer. There is a controlled dosage of the ultraviolet rays to reassure the consumer does not receive a large amount of UV ray, these dosages should be spread out over several sessions. A great aspect of tanning is clients get privacy in their own booth. Weight, being too white, tan lines and uncomfortable bathing suits are not an issue with the tanning beds. Another advantage to tanning is it is all year round. It doesn't matter if it is snowing or raining outside you can still get the benefit of a captivating skin color. Indoor tanning beds can have a negative impact on your skin. It can cause premature wrinkles, rashes, and can cause cancer. Tanning is like a slow cooker that can slowly affect your skin and your aging process. When tanning it is suggested to ask the salon staff the recommended exposure limits for your skin type. • 8. Tanning Beds and Skin Cancer Essay Tanning Beds and Skin Cancer What is UV radiation? Before one can discuss harmful effects of tanning equipment and increased sun exposure, one must be familiar with the components of ultraviolet light and how affects the skin. Sunlight contains two types of ultraviolet (UV) light: UVA and UVB. UVArays consist of longer wavelengths that penetrate deep into the dermal layer of skin. Limited exposure to UVA rays causes skin to tan; however, most experts agree that overexposure to UVA can lead to other long–term skin damage. UVB rays' wavelengths are much shorter, affecting the outermost layers of skin. UVB rays are known as the "burning rays" and are considered more dangerous. Tanning beds and sun lamps generally emit 93% to 99% UVA... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tanning beds, therefore, have the power to control exposure time and the ratio of UVA to UVB rays for a "perfect balance" (http://www.shop.net /suncity/). Since tanning beds filter out most of the burning UVB rays, chances of getting burned decrease dramatically (http://www.darquetan.com /faq.htm). Therefore, the companies can claim that the tanning beds cannot be any more harmful than the sun. Tanning salons also state that some UV radiation is needed for the manufacturing of vitamin D. Vitamin D certifies that a constant level of calcium remains in the blood and controls its absorption. In an advertisement for tanning equipment, one tanning bed company, The Beach House Tanning, claims that the sun is the only source of Vitamin D (http://www.beachouse.com/tanning_benefits.htm). However, vitamin D is also found in foods such as dairy products, cereal, and fish (http://shrike.depaul.edu/~vbard/vitdpg.html), and it takes far less UV radiation to obtain the necessary amount of vitamin D than it does to get a suntan (http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/tanning.html). In addition, tanning industries claim that UVA radiation has no harmful effects on the skin. They say that only UVB radiation can harm the outermost layer of the skin. Well, according to the Mayo Clinic, melanoma causesDNA damage to cells which begin to grow out of control and can eventually form a mass of cancerous cells (Mayoclinic.org). Elderly men are at highest risk, but melanoma is the most common cancer in young adults 25 to 29 years old (ASCO). Therefore, all ages are prone to melanoma. The American Society of Clinical Oncology explains that Familial melanoma is a genetic or inherited condition where the risk of melanoma can be passed from generation to generation (ASCO). Therefore, if both of your parents are at risk for melanoma, you automatically are too. They go on to state that familial melanoma also refers to families in which two or more first–degree relatives have melanoma (ASCO). When a type of melanoma is referred to as familial melanoma, know that this means someone has a risk or has developed melanoma because of their genetic relations to someone with the risk or with melanoma. The American Society of Clinical Oncology explains this gene mutation by stating, "a parent with a gene mutation may pass along a copy of his or her normal gene or a copy of the gene with the mutation. Therefore, a child who has a parent with a mutation has a 50% chance of inheriting that mutation. A brother, sister, or parent of a person who has a mutation also has a 50% chance of having the same mutation" (ASCO). Parents with the melanoma gene mutation have a 50% chance of giving it to their child, if the child does receive this mutation, they too, have a 50% chance of passing it to their offspring. However, in recent years, studies have made it possible for parents carrying this gene to not pass it on to their children. Scientists discovered a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Persuasive Essay On Skin Cancer "The cause of skin cancer is, Cumulative sun exposure causes mainly basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, while episodes of severe sunburns, usually before age 18, can cause melanoma later in life." As the natural man we all consider ourselves invincible that is, until cancer strikes. Idaho has among the highest rates of new melanoma diagnoses and deaths in the U.S. Prompting health officials to encourage all Idahoans to protect themselves from sun exposure to prevent the potentially deadly disease. "In 2008 more than 1 million people were diagnosed with skin cancer, making it the most common of all cancers. About 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their life. About 40 people each year die in Idaho from this cancer." "People don't perceive that Idaho has a skin cancer problem," says Patti Moran, who manages the state's Cancer Prevention and Control program. "But the death and diagnoses rates are very telling. We know that many Idahoans spend time in the sun taking advantage of our great outdoor recreation opportunities. We're urging people to remember to protect their skin every time they go outside to prevent skin cancer." Another thing that us as Idahoans do often are using tanning beds, something that I am guilty of myself. • 28. Essay on The Evolution of Skin Tanning The Evolution of Skin Tanning One of Catherine's insatiable obsessions in Ernest Hemingway's The Garden of Eden is to darken her skin color. She accomplishes this by sun tanning at every opportunity possible, and naturally, her skin turns many shades darker. Catherine's skin tanning fixation at the time the story takes place coincides with the premiere of skin tanning as a stylish and chic fashionable pursuit. Traditionally, tanned skin was undesirable to the public. Prior to the industrial revolution, most manual labor was done outside under the sun where such constant exposure resulted in darker skin. Consequently, because manual labor was a staple of the lower classes, tanned skinned also became associated with the destitute ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though these conditions were probably worse than work outside, impoverished laborers were no longer distinguished by a dark tan. However, the single most important occurrence that changed the world's perception on tanning forever dealt with Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel, a famous French designer, who during one summer in the 1920s vacationed on the French Riviera aboard a friend's yacht. When she returned with darkened skin, even though the tan was probably not intended, it sent shockwaves through the fashion world, and overnight a new trend was born (History of Tanning). If any other woman had returned with a tan, it would never have received so much attention, but it was Chanel, with her own company of perfume, who epitomized the changing role of women in the 1920s. Women were becoming more active in all aspects of live, from the home to the workplace to social situations (Chapter 1). Additionally, they weren't forced to wear as restrictive clothing as before, which allowed for more parts of the body to be exposed to the sun. A tan began to symbolize the new era of dynamic women who were no longer passive and constrained by society and previously–held standards. There was no better way to exhibit this newfound exuberance and independence than with a tan which until this point in history was as undesirable and taboo as socially possible. In fact, tanning took on completely opposite connotations than before, as it began to stand for a person's youth and wealth, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 31. Tanning Beds Are Becoming Popular Amongst Younger People Tanning Beds Tanning is becoming popular amongst younger people, possibly leading them to their death. Social media, peers, and celebrities have taught us that our appearance is more important than our health. Tanning beds are becoming the next trend; the next cigarette. Instagram has become flooded with images of young, fit people with an unnatural orange glow, followed by an endless stream of comments reading "goals." The cheapest, fastest and easiest way to get a natural looking tan is to use a tanning bed. Tanning beds expose humans to extreme UV rays, deepening the shade of pigment in the skin. Extreme UV exposure is the most common reason people get skin cancer, as if the sun wasn't enough UV exposure as is. Tanning has become a life–threatening trend amongst the younger generation and what they don't realize is that: they need to learn to love themselves the way they were born, they are becoming addicted to tanning and distant to their loved ones, and their lives can be taken away from tanning. A wide majority of people are struggling with self–esteem issues and lean towards tanning beds to make them feel better about themselves. The major influences that media portrays impact how people see themselves when they look in the mirror. • 32. Children Must Be More Educated About The Risks Of Sun... Teenagers need to be more educated about the risks of sun exposure and the consequences excessive tanning can cause. Programs aimed at educating America's youth were implemented in the early 1990's; however those programs have been unsuccessful (Geller et al., 2002). Higher rates of sunburns tend to occur in regions where sun safety education has not been implemented (Saridi et al., 2014). The major reasons teens are at a greater risk for developing skin cancer as adults is due to improper sunscreen use, and therefore more sunburns, as well due to the use of tanning beds (Geller et al., 2002). Social factors and sunscreen use. Adolescents tend to not take sun protective measures in order to tan to look more attractive to peers (Saridi et al., 2014). Beliefs about tanned skin being more attractive have been around for many years and these beliefs need to be reshaped in order to make real change to increase sun safety (Geller et al., 2002). Teens' views about sun tanning and teens' sun tanning actions are greatly influenced by friends' behaviors (Mewse, Lea, Ntala, & Eiser, 2011). Teens see the positive effects of tanning such as a better appearance, much quicker than they do the negative effects such as wrinkles and skin cancer, and it can be hard for them to relate tanning to future cancer (Hall, Jones, & Saraiya, 2001). A common theme among many studies evaluating teens and sun tanning concluded that the main reasons teens tan is to look more attractive, fit in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Little big history is a research tool in the field of big history that allows for an in–depth analysis of a specific object or phenomenon – something a creature from outer space would very much appreciate if they had no knowledge on a topic, but also something a regular person could find very interesting. • 34. The Effects Of Tanning On A Bathing Suit The other day I was pondering the still popular, yet seemingly dangerous practice of tanning as I looked down at my chalky white legs and thought, is the desire to tan really that mysterious? It seems obvious that people just like the way it looks to be tan. In fact, one survey of American teenagers revealed that two thirds of them feel 'healthier' and 'more sophisticated' with a tan (qtd. in "Sun Tanning"). I know I feel better about putting on a bathing suit if I'm not so starkly white that I worry about blinding young children. I also know that it just feels good to be in the sun. The warm rays beating down on my back and shoulders as I work outdoors or go for a hike seem therapeutic and natural. I'll admit I've seen the inside of a tanning booth a few times before I took a spring break trip to California and, yes, that felt good too. As I searched more deeply into the issue of why people tan, it became apparent that despite the dire warnings there is a deeper, biological reason for the undying popularity of bronzed skin, we need the sun. Actually, the human body is 'hard–wired' to need healthy doses of sunlight. Through our skin we process vitamin D, which is gained almost solely from the sun's Ultraviolet B (UBV) rays. We also need the sun to regulate our hormone levels and fend off depression. In an article about the health benefits of vitamin D, Reinhold Vieth explains that when "humans evolved at equatorial latitudes, without modern clothing and shelter, their ... The Pros And Cons Of Tanning Campaigns Originally back in the 1900s, having a tan introduced what the general public called the "Man Tan," meaning the only reason people had one was because of their class. The upper class had the idea that they had to be pale and skinny to show off their wealth and riches; therefore, becoming spenders instead of savers. Tanning is when a person is really pale but when the sun rays hit your skin your skin becomes browner. You tan in the summer because that is when the sun is out. Spray tanning is the form of self–tanning. A liquid mist is sprayed onto your body. The mist has an ingredient in it called Dihydroxyacetone that interacts with your skin's chemistry to turn it tan or brown.
