Sexism
Since the beginning of history, sexism has always been a prominent barrier between
sexes. The notion that women are not on the same level as men has always been in existence. We
see that even during the book of exodus this belief stems from the creation of Eve, through a rib
of Adam. From scripture, Eve 's roll was to be considered as a servant and a temptress, the sole
reason why Adam ate the apple. Consequently Eve is blamed as being the reason mankind is not
living in a paradise. Sexism has continued throughout ancient history and continues occur in our
own environment to this day.
Sexism is defined as the discrimination or hatred against people based on their gender

Most people would debate that
men are much stronger and better athletes. According to the race however, there was very little
difference between man and woman versus the first man and the last man. Clearly this shows
that gender bias if not ethical is clearly incorrect.
What about emotions? Do certain genders carry more tendency to act a certain way? In
1970 a study conducted by two psychologists at Stanford university showed four amazing things.
They sifted though nearly 1500 research papers, studied behavior tendencies and only found
four differences: Males are more aggressive then females, girls have better verbal skills
then boys, boys have better visual–spatial ability and boys have better mathematical ability from
about thirteen onward. Another interesting piece of information that they discovered that on
average these differences were extremely small. (Shaw, 21)

Sexism Against Women
Sexism is prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, commonly towards women, on the basis of
their sex. Sexism is still present in today's society, especially against women. There are many ways
as to how people are sexist towards women. The three places that sexism against women is a big
issue: the media, pop culture and the sports industry. Some people do not allow women the same
opportunities that men have just because they are women. By creating sexism in these places, people
are treating women unfairly and with disrespect. The stereotypes that are created by women paints a
certain image of women that people believe to be true. The media is especially known for creating
unrealistic images of women.
One place where sexism against women is present is in the media. Women are portrayed a certain
way in advertisements, like TV commercials. The author of the book, book title, stated that,
"according to advertisers, women drink iced tea and eat yogurt, salads, chocolate and cake",
(DiAngelo and Sensoy, 86). This statement paints a certain stereotype of women based on the things
that they eat. It is a known fact that all women do not have the same diet and do not eat all the same
foods, so it is weird that advertisers say that all women eat the foods that they mentioned. In today's
society, social media is now a big part of the category media. An article was written on the topic of
sexism involving Twitter. The article mentions how hashtags that are used on twitter are sexist.

Sexism Is A Social Disease
"Sexism is a social disease." This quote was made by someone anonymous, but it is shockingly true.
Sexism is a large issue in our society. Women are oppressed by so many, and ridiculed for choices
that they make. They are shot down for anything they do, and we must change this. Through public
speaking, rallies, and social media, we can help to combat sexism.
"The best way to start making a difference against such small–mindedness in real life is to make
people aware of real–life examples of sexist and unacceptable behavior, as opposed to paying
undeserved attention to distracting symbols that, in the end, are nothing more than symbols, and
don't personally or directly affect anyone in nearly the same way as real actions." (How to Really
Make a Stand... 1) The article states that the way to begin making a difference against sexism is to
make people aware of it. I believe that this is true, and through social media and public events, you
can do this. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

who made the sexist comment. I think this is an exceptional way to make the person aware of their

Sexism And Hostile Sexism
Sexism, is a prejudice plain and simple. One of the earliest forms of violence directed toward
women was the Witch Hunt Trials of the Middle Ages. Bishops debated whether a woman was
really human at all. If her nose were too long, she had red hair, a humped back, or if she was
exceptionally beautiful, she was thought to be a witch and was burned at the stake. There was an
estimated nine million women burned during the Witch Trials. During the "Women's Liberation
Movement in the 1960's, feminist theorists explained that oppression of women was widespread in
nearly all human society, and spoke of sexism instead of male chauvinism. Male chauvinists were
usually individual men who expressed the belief that they were superior to women" (Napikoski). By
the mid 20th century sexism was established and began to appear in advertising. Between the 1970's
and 1990's women began to feel more equal to men until the 1980's where they were portrayed as
sex symbols on national television (The Origin and History of SEXISM). There are two main types
of sexism, benevolent and hostile, and their definitions are opposite from one another. Hostile
sexism is what most people perceive as sexism today as it seems sexism is occurring more and more
often and is, notably, more vulgar. It is the notion that women are inferior or not as worthy; a belief
that males are intrinsically superior. For many years women have been degraded and looked down
upon with the idea that their place is in the kitchen with

Then and Now: Changes of Racism, Sexism, and Classism
In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout, the protagonists in the book, experience
and learn about the problems of racism, sexism, and classism when their father, Atticus, agrees to
defend Tom Robinson, an African American, in a trial. Set in the 1930s, most people were treated
unfairly because of their race, gender, or social class. Even though problems about race, gender, and
class decreased over time, these problems are still very prevalent today. Even though racism
decreased dramatically over the past decades, there are still problems today that are strikingly
similar to the problems in To Kill A Mockingbird. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to Jem
and Scout about the unfairness of court: "when it 's a white man's word against a black man's, the
white man always wins. They 're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (Lee 220). Even though this
was set in the 1930's, juries from court still have a racial bias to this day. In fact, from the
Sentencing Project, an organization that advocates change in sentencing policy and advocating
alternatives to incarceration, it has been shown that African Americans are "six times more likely to
be incarcerated than white males... if current trends continue, one of every three black Americans
can expect to go to prison in his lifetime" (Sentencing Project 1). In the United States, people have

Benevolent Sexism Essay
Benevolent sexism is a courteous attitude toward women (which feels favorable) but in actuality is
sexist because the motivation behind it casts women as weak individuals in need of men's
assistance. This evaluation of gender only appears subjectively positive, yet damages gender
equality. Benevolent sexism is harmful because of the motivation that drives it. However, if the
motivation of the individual (men or women) assisting is not based on the original assumption that
women are weak individuals that need help, I believe purely chivalrous actions makes a better world
and should be encouraged. The friendly, fuzzy feelings from benevolent sexism come at a cost, "
[they]..aren't all sunshine and butterflies" (Tannenbaum, 2013). Even though they benefit women
(compliments, perks), benevolent sexism often creates a damaging stereotype for women in male
dominated fields. The motivation behind the chivalrous acts directed towards women comes from
the traditional gender stereotyping of masculine dominance, thus proposing inequality based on
gender. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The insidious fraction allows it to influence opinions of an individual in a non–direct way, which is
much harder to detect (it hides under the guise of positivity). For example, imagine a hypothetical
situation––a firm is voting to legalize an anti–female policy in leadership roles because they lack the
assertiveness and toughness to lead. The voting would cause an uproar and protested because it
directly promotes gender inequality in the workplace. However, consider the second hypothetical
situation––a firm is voting to legalize an anti–female policy in leadership roles because they are
much more attentive to details than men and make better accountant (or any other non–leadership
role). The latter situation (even though the purpose of the policy is the same) would cause less
uproar and protest due to the different wording and

Racism And Sexism
Racism and sexism are the unfortunate realities to exist in our society. Both of said institutions can
shape the experiences of people, especially people of color. In order to speak more about this, it is
best to define what racism and sexism is. Racism can be defined as the belief in the superiority of
one race over another. On the other hand, sexism is the behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster
stereotypes of social roles based on gender. It comes as no surprise that both acts of racism and
sexism often, if not always, results in the discrimination as well as prejudice towards people of
different races, ethnicities, as well as gender. It has been theorized that racism and sexism are not
fixed ideas, rather, they are social constructs

Sexism Research Paper
Sexism Exists
We no longer live in the "Mad Men" era, but the modern workplace is still responsible for some of
the Mad Men style sexism. Women often times have trouble getting hired for important jobs,
obtaining high–level positions, and they commonly face greater harassment threats in the office.
Despite big gains, women only make up slightly more than ten percent of big company chief
financial officers. More than one–third of public companies had zero women senior officers,
according to a recent survey from Catalyst, an organization aimed at expanding business
opportunities for women. According to a recent study from the Institute for Women's Policy
Research, a woman gets paid seventy–seven cents to every dollar a man makes. That's a difference
of more than $10,000 per year on average. Among recent college graduates, women make eighty–
two percent of what men make. In their first year of work after graduation college, men make
$7,6000 more than women on average, this is according to a fact sheet from Congress' joint
economic committee. The trend continues even after women began to rise up the corporate ladder,

Here are the reasons why I am a part of the 16% of people who do not believe sexism is still an issue
today. Men are statistically more likely to take jobs that women won't. In March of 2016, 80,543
men, six–teen years and over were employed. In March of 2016, only 70,777 women, six–teen years
and over were employed. This is not because of sexist reasoning, this is because of women not
wanting to do the hard work that a man is willing to do daily. So whenever I am asked if I think this
drastic employment rate is sexism, I will firmly say no. I believe that the employment rate difference
has to do with the fact that many women refuse to work jobs that are physically more challenging or
that require long

Institutional Sexism In The Workplace
The U.S. is known to have many issues in its society including racism and sexism. There have been
laws that were made in attempt to stop discrimination against color but to this day, women still aren't
seen as equals to men. Institutional sexism is the discrimination of a certain gender at a workplace.
Sexism is portrayed in the differences between the number of men versus the number of females that
have management positions, get higher pay, have more opportunities for advancement and, are more
likely to get hired. This oppression against women can impact lives of many women emotionally,
mentally, and physically. Sexism also leads to sexual violence and domestic violence because the
idea that women and men are unequal causes women to be taken advantage of at home, at work, and
everywhere else. Institutional sexism is a topic that needs to be talked about more because the U.S.
needs have a law that doesn't allow sexual discrimination anywhere. Institutional sexism in the
workplace is an ongoing issue nationally and internationally that takes advantage of women and
their work that needs to stop.
There are many industries and working fields where women weren't trusted to be leaders when
compared to men. The healthcare field has been filled with women for a while yet most of the
leadership positions are mostly occupied with men. Men are more likely to have leadership positions
in both men and female dominated fields (Stamarski and Son Hing 2015). Women face this

women from all different levels of society. From powerful producers to government dignitaries,
women seem to be often exposed to situations that undermine their dignity and often casts a shadow
of insecurity and despair. Is clearly not enough to admit that sexism is a problem, what is important

Sexism in the workplace Throughout human history, the female gender was seen as lesser hen men.
Women were told they couldn't vote until the 1910's, they were put down for doing jobs like
construction working, mining, and factory work. In fact, the first major push for women in working
class jobs in America wasn't until the 1940s. The main reason for this was that the U.S needed mass
production to beat the Axis powers in World War Two. But things have changed, right? We are
living in the age of equality where men and women are treated as equal, and neither are put down
for their genders. So why is it all over the news about men and women not being treated equal?

While there are plenty of people backing up the idea of women make 79 cents to every dollar men
make, and in some cases this is true, women do make less because they're women. But you should
know that your media is lying to you. The wage gap isn't nearly as large as it is made out to be. The
equation for the women's pay gap, as told by American Progress's website, "calculated by dividing
the median earnings of full–time, year–round, working women by the median earnings of full–time,
year–round, working men, all rounded to the nearest $100. The wage gap looks slightly different
depending on which data source is used in the calculation." Now do you notice anything missing? It
does not take in occupation, skill level, previous experiences, pretty much it doesn't mention
anything to do with qualifications for the job. The reason everyone thinks that the pay gap is a thing
is because of the media. They'll Do anything to get the public riled up that they ignore facts. These
big media source outlets get so involved in politics that they block out any distinct point made. So,
to sum up, the wage gap does not exist to the extent claimed because It does not take in the idea of
occupation of the worker, the skill level, the basic education, and that it doesn't even take in jobs that

Do we really have equality even though the title 9 was passed and women are entitled to vote? I
mean why do men see women as " weak objects " such as when the teacher needs someone to carry

couple of strong boys " Why can't it be I need some help. That way it doesn't single out girls and it
isn't sexist. Why does there have to be a label that boys can do more than a girl can.
But Sexism doesn't just occur to women. It happens in men to. It is said that a woman's sentence is a

Hollywood Sexism
Power in Hollywood
Women are more than 50 percent of the population in America. Everyday woman face sexism but,
Hollywood in particular has many cases of misogynism. Despite Hollywood projecting progressive
ideas they severely lack in the sexism part. Misogynist portrayal of women in Hollywood results
from men having the power in Hollywood.
Women are a low percent of those behind the camera. "In 2014, a whopping 85 percent of films had
no female directors, 80 percent had no female writers, and one–third lacked female producers,
according to a San Diego State University study (Davidson). How can there be strong women
characters if there are not that many women working behind the scenes? With the lack of women
behind the camera, the roles women play are often degrading and sexist. Women are often portrayed
in service jobs such as waitresses instead of in leadership roles. In the top 500 films from 2007–
2012, 28.8 percent of women wore sexually revealing clothes while men only accounted for 7
percent (IndieWire). TV and movies teach girls from a young age that they are meant to be a wife or
homemaker and not much else. It is hard to dream to be a doctor or a CEO of a big company if you
do not see it when you turn on the TV. And it is not that women are not qualified to work behind the
camera, they are just not given the chance. It is hard to change your portrayal in film and TV if you
are not the one writing the characters or directing.

Sexism In The Help
In a sexism stricken society there are drawbacks that affect women every day of their lives.
According to men, about 56% of them think sexism is no longer an issue (Source). Today, sexism is
still a threat to women of all over the world. Kathryn Stockett, the author of The Help, addresses
sexism to make the time period genuine to the reader. The sexism in Stockett's book is brought forth
indirectly. Stockett uses two of her main protagonists as an example on how sexism affects women
and the roles they are supposed to play. Sexism is a practice that is detrimental to women, entices
violence, and creates a social barrier between the sexes.
To begin with, women often find themselves in adverse situations that they have no control over.

Comparing today's society to the society in The Help, jobs were only offered to women who fit the
look of a petite, feminine woman and nowadays people are hired for the amount of experience they
had. Stockett emphasizes the gender barrier many women experience during the time period she
depicts in her book. In the beginning chapters when Miss. Skeeter is looking for a job she
encounters a, "squat, single column under HELP WANTED: FEMALE" (Stockett 68), in the daily
paper implying there is a limit of jobs that women can work. Most of them happened to be secretary
positions. This is not only hurtful to women who do not fit the conventional stereotype of a woman,
but to women who want to change their world even if it means baby steps. Men are always offered,
"at least four columns filled with bank managers, accountants, loan officers, cotton collate operators.
On this page, Percy & Gray, LP, is offering Jr. Stenographers fifty more cents an hour" (Stockett 69),
additionally adding to the notion that men have more job opportunities and make more money. The
way that sexism plays its role in society make it seem like there is no way of overcoming this
obstacle faced by women. Breaking the large social boundary that women should play house while
the men watch television is happening in real life in today's time. All thing considered, women today

What Is Sexism
Sexism is a form of discrimination that harms both males and females. Sexism is not only practiced
in culture but it is reinforced in schools through hidden curriculum. In order for the this issue to be
eradicated you need to make people aware that gender discrimination still exist in todays society.
This essay will discuss the issue of sexism. Sexism is a human rights concern as it violates rights of
women by not being treated equally and violates the right to freedom of expression for men. Gender
role stereotypes are socially constructed by society following the view of functionalism, conflict
theory and symbolic interaction. There are two types of sexism benevolent sexism and hostile
sexism that affects both genders. Sexism impacts negatively on education in regards to girls, causing
girls to feel uncomfortable, unwelcomed and scared and leads to them dropping out of school.

person. Discrimination itself means making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing
based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual
merit (Merriam–Webster). One way of expressing discrimination is denying one a job because of
his/her race or gender, or treating others unfairly because of his/her race or gender. Discrimination
can lead to quitting a job, and possibly doing something harmful to oneself or to the aggressor.

However in highflying jobs there still is a large wage difference. The NES showed that woman's

amount of work they do to claim equal pay.
In the 1960's want ads were universally segregated by sex. There was the "help wanted–male" and

Benevolent Sexism In Business
Better Together: Why Benevolent Sexism Is Harmful to Women in Business
In the fight for equality, it is obvious to defend against forms of sexism that are used for
antagonization. However, chivalrous attitudes that cast women as weak and in need of men are often
ignored. Social psychologists have studied the effects of benevolent sexism using experiments
testing one's performance shortly after being labeled as incompetent. Benevolent sexism is not a
series of compliments, but rather a threat to one's ability to think, learn, and perceive information.
The workplace is an environment of which benevolent sexism occurs most often and one of which
most are familiar with. Benevolent sexism in business does not allow men and women to achieve
the same goals within the work place. Forcing an individual into a social role can limit them to only
specific simple tasks that do not allow for maximum personal growth.
Often times, benevolent sexism is mistaken for a well–intentioned compliment. However, there are
real world dangers that come with assigning a stereotype to an individual. Within business, one of
the most common forms of benevolent sexism is assuming that because a woman has the ability to
bear children she should engage in any nurturing roles. Melanie Tannenbaum elucidates the issue
with labeling women as more caring, maternal, and compassionate in the 2013 article, "The Problem
When Sexism Just Sounds So Darn Friendly". Tannenbaum states:

Sexism In America Today
The article I read was You're Sexist. And So Am I from USA Today. This article went into
discussing how everyone has internalized sexism, believing in sexism in their head, whether they
like to believe it or not. This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in
order for them to be respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because
all of these social codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One
example of this was in the article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around
them someday becoming mothers. Women are expected to have children and then take time off from
work to raise their children. No one believes that men should be expected to stay at home and raise
children because it is not the societal norm. Therefore when a woman chooses a career around
impending motherhood, she is falling into subjectivity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An important aspect of this is how many women are being sexually objectified. The article said that
this is one way women internalized sexism because they believe if they do not wear promiscuous
clothing that they are "safe" from sexual predators. However, no women would flat out say another
woman was assaulted due to her clothing, they are often thinking about their own clothing choices if
they were in that situation. Furthermore, the article does talk about how women have made strides
towards gender equality, but there is still sexism. Another aspect of SCWAMP discussed in the
article was property holding. The property, in this case, would be knowledge on how to be a girl.
This knowledge would be on things such as shaving your legs, makeup, and trendsetting clothes.

The Importance Of Benevolent Sexism
When I first stumbled upon benevolent sexism in the textbook I had to stick to the section for a little
bit. I was very intrigued by the concept as I was completely unaware that it classified as sexism, let
alone that it was actually harmful to the egalitarian movement. Benevolent sexism is mistaken with
an appreciation and respect for women, which can make it hard to identify and then classify
correctly. In the textbook, this concept is described as the following: "a more subtle kind of sexism
that argues for women's special niceness and purity (...) You may initially think that benevolent
sexism cannot be harmful. However, it still emphasizes that women are different from men and that
they are also weaker." (Matlin 58) This struck a chord with me particularly because I did initially
think that it could not be harmful, and was oblivious to the consequences that its existence entailed.
Discussion in class as well as textbook readings showed that this sexism was very much alive and
running in our society, which prompted me to think, why is it that there aren't obvious efforts against
benevolent sexism? My own experience answered this question; a great portion of women do not
see this invisible sexism and endorse it unknowingly.
This concept goes well with what we discussed in class known as "gender complementarity", the
idea that women serves as complements to men, we are here to assist them and complete them. This
idea fetishes the woman and turns her into an object with a

Sexism And Social Psychology
Sexism in Relation to Social Psychology
People, on many occasions, have preconceived opinions that are not based on any reason or actual
experience, this is known as prejudice. Whereas sexism is a discrimination or prejudice based on an
individual's sex; a preconceived belief that one sex is superior and more valuable than another sex.
In Personality and Social Psychology Factors Explaining Sexism the authors state, "The personality
approach holds factors within the individual as the major causes of prejudice, the social psychology
approach links prejudice to factors like people's social group membership and social identity, and
situational factors" (Akrami, N., et al. 2011).
Within the first study written by Akrami, the participants were non psychology university students,

Sexism In Today's Society
Everyday all over the world even in the land of the free there is at least a couple hundred of woman
and men who get added into the list of sexism victims. I am pretty sure every person on this plant
has been added into that list. I think everyone should be aware of this and should prevent this act
from damaging another human being. Thanks to movements such as Feminism which is the belief of
social, political, and economic equality of the sexes. Because of feminism you girls and boys are
understanding and fixing gender roles. I believe because of this discrimination it can cause someone
to feel bad about doing or feeling something that makes them happy or making them feel
unaccepted. In today's society there are plenty of acts of sexism towards women still going on, and
nobody really does anything to stop this from happening. An example of one of the many acts of
sexism towards women today is Institutional sexism. It has been said that Women make 77 cent for
every dollar a man earns. Inequality like that should not still be existing in today's society, there are

Today 18/50 states protect transgenders lives from being fired form their jobs. There are children

Sexism : The Definition Of Sexism In Society
Sexism Sexism is defined as "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex." Sexism
is also another term for sex discrimination and/or gender discrimination. Sexism is a social issue
because of the unequal rights and privileges between men and women, but also because of the way it
promotes women and men to act on a basis of ancestral roles. Sexisms grip on society is a long and
painful history, that hasn't fully evolved and may never. Though sexism does effect men, it mostly
effects women. Women haven't always had the same privileges and rights as men, they weren't
allowed to vote, could not join the military, had little job opportunities, and rarely had a college
education. Whereas, men typically were able to join the military, were allowed to vote, own
property, have jobs, and usually were able to obtain a college education. It was commonly believed
that women should remain in their homes, to raise the children and take care of their home and
husband. While men should be at work to pay the bills, and put food on the table. Different countries
have taken different steps to advance women's rights, and have made many great changes. "In 1994,
ten countries had women as the heads of their governments, however, in more than 100 countries
there were no woman serving on their legislative bodies" (Busse, Greene, Haynes). Despite women's
efforts to receive equal pay with men, "70% of the worlds poor are women" (Busse, Green, Haynes).

Sexism In America
Women in the United States have acquired constitutional rights over the time; however,
discrimination still exists. Sexism occurs frequently in the workplace. In fact, sexism is one of the
main barriers that women face. For example, women in the same job as men usually earn less, even
though both have the same education and skills that are require for completing the job. Indeed,
paying women less than men for the same job is a blatant discrimination that could be solve by
providing equality among genders. Sexism is a term that describes the inequality among genders.
According to Guynn (2013) the issue of sexism occurs in many companies. Men usually think that
women are not capable of completing certain task because they might not to be strong ... Show more

America has always been a nation of immigrants. Over our history, generations of immigrants
seeking a better life for themselves and their families have come to this country and made it what it
is today. Our country has a lot of races such as Asians, Native Americans, Hispanics, African
Americans and many others. I am Hispanic. Being Hispanic has its advantages because we have the
opportunities to practice our own culture that it is enriched with wonderful traditions and the
American culture as well. Another privileged of being Hispanic is being bilingual. Knowing two
languages can help us advance in the workplace. When it comes to social class, Hispanic are at the
lowest rung of the social ladder. We do not have a lot of saying when it comes to politics. We are
consider the largest minority group in the United Sates, but yet all Hispanics are considered to be a
low social class. On the other hand, being Hispanic has its disadvantages we get stereotype a lot.
Many people argue that Hispanics take jobs away, but it is not true. We have only taken the hard
labor jobs such as agriculture; basically, the jobs that no one else will do. According Pew Hispanic
Center (2012) more than a quarter of a Hispanics [immigrants] are janitors, 350,000 are maids and
housekeepers, and 300,000 are groundskeepers. Despite this, many backbreaking jobs Hispanics
perform at low wages provide goods and services to all Americans. We, Hispanic, are known for our
willingness to work hard for our families. Our culture is very family oriented. We tend to help our
own members and work hard for their best interest. Being Hispanic has taught that I have keep

The Problem Of Gender Sexism
Nowadays, there are still a lot of powerless groups exist in this world, such as the group of women.
The problem of gender sexism exists from the beginning of the history and still continues in today's
society. Women are still inferior to men in my country, whether from family and job status, social
position and political views, women are treated unequal and disrespectful, therefore, this problem
needs more abundant attention. "Sexism, like many forms of prejudice, only survives in a traditional
environments and this is how it continues in China" from All–China Women's Federation's website,
yet this problem is still happening in China, but there must be a way to solve it.
Since ancient times, people have thought that men should give priority to their jobs and the society
and women should take family as the core. As a result, men and women are created and have
different definitions. Gender is actually made by the society and its meaning is also created by the
society. I do not know such a definition is good or bad. The good one is that distinction between
men and women makes the society get balanced development. Women and other family members
take care of the family and men make more contributions to the family and society. But the
weakness is that some feudal and extreme cultures would develop the distinction of gender into
discrimination. In many developing countries, women are considered to be lower than men. The
distinction of gender can exist, but it should exist

Heterosexism And Sexism
Sexism and Heterosexism Sexism is a type of discrimination which I feel is such a part of our
culture that we often do not even recognize it and it is widely overlooked. Johnson (2013) suggests
"we need to deal with the social roots that generate and nurture the social problems that are reflected
in the behavior of individuals" (p. 335). Unquestionably, it becomes difficult to recognize, and
therefore begin to change, that which is the social norm in our world; and yet, to do nothing
perpetuates the problem of a patriarchal culture (Johnson, 2013).
In a patriarchal culture, on group is exercising control over another group, or groups, in an effort to
exert domination in all areas (Johnson, 2013). "The symbols and ideas that make up patriarchal ...

This is to say nothing of attitudes against women when sexism is combined with racism. Based on
information presented by Blackmon (2008), South Carolina governor Cole Blease was quoted as
saying "I have...very serious doubt as to whether the crime of rape can be committed against a
negro" (p. 305). According to Katz (2013), it will take not only women activists, but men who are
willing to reject the sexist attitudes of the males who have come before them to eradicate the gender
inequality which is commonplace in today's society. Additionally, sex segregation in the workplace
deserves acknowledgement. In the twenty first century, so many advancements have been made for
women in this area; and yet, women are still left disadvantaged in the economic arena (Bernstein,
2013). Bernstein (2013) acknowledges women are still predominantly shouldering the burdens of
raising a family, and even though 15% of women are holding historically male dominated positions,
their average yearly–pay with a graduate degree lags male pay by approximately $35,000 a year.
Given the overall acceptance of sexism in our society, women are inundated with female ideals of
the perfect woman and body images which set impossible standards. Statistics show exposure to

Sexism In The Workplace Essay
Some people say that sexism no longer exists in the workplace, yet only "19%" of women are in a
presidential or chief position at work(Bomey ). Women are less likely to be hired for a job despite
having all the qualifications, women earn less than men, and women are continuously harassed in
the workplace. Despite the fact that women are capable to "perform with the same skill and success"
as men, the issue of gender discrimination still continues to rise( ). In society, sometimes it can be
difficult to recognize issues of sexism not only at work but in life. With the failure to realize gender
discrimination and harassment in the world, educating people on the issue of sexism can make the
workplace a success.
A majority of women aspire to obtain a higher position in their work force, but achieving that role
can be difficult. Some people believe that the reason there is more male leaders than females is
because women are not intelligent enough to uphold high–thinking jobs. However, according to a
reliable source, " women now actually surpass men in educational achievement" ("Gender inequality

The Importance Of Sexism On Women
Sexism towards women is deeply rooted in history. Today's culture sees men as the dominant sex
due to biological differences between men and women. Constantly throughout time, men exploit and
look down on women. They were subjected to stay in the house and forbidden to explore activities
and careers that were not for women. With medical and technological advances, women started to
stand up for themselves and exit out of their traditional roles at home. Today, a tremendous amount
of progress has been made towards gender equality, but women still battle against sexist attitudes.
This includes a perpetuating rape culture that blames women for dressing in a way that is "asking for
it" to women making 77 cents on the dollar when compared to a man's salary. These are examples of
sexism women are subjected to and the authors in the articles "Marked Women," "Sexism in
English," and "A Woman's Beauty," argue how women are marked based upon various aspects of
their life whereas men are unmarked and viewed in a holistic way.
Every action, every choice, every piece of a woman tells a story about her even if it is not her
intention. In the article "Marked Women," Deborah Tannen sheds light on the idea that women are
inherently marked in everything they do. Clothes that a woman chooses to wear mark her so that a
judgement can be formed about her character. Wearing shorts too short or clothes too tight mark
women as promiscuous or "asking for it." Loose clothing and sweatpants are marked

Sexism Definition Essay
When was the last time you really thought about gender equality or sexism, and how it could be
affecting you? Sexism has been around for who knows how long, but it seems that just recently
people have started to do something about it. There are major movements and websites like now.org
and National Women's Day. It is has only been 95 years since women have been able to vote in the
United States, which was made possible by the 19th amendment. Yes, we have had big success so
far, but that doesn't mean the fight is over yet. Sexism is a serious issue that should no longer be

definition of sexism will get you many different definitions. The world's most used search engine
defines it as "prejudice, stereotyping, or discriminating, typically against women, on the basis of sex

women should receive the equal treatment and should not be discriminated against based on
gender," (Billing). Equality, to most, means we want to be treated with equal respect, but not the
same as the next person (Billing). Women, men, and everyone ... Show more content on

An everlasting Conflict
Sexism is categorized by extreme cases, but when in reality, both female and male parties execute
sexism everyday even in the simplest forms. Though women tend to receive more grieve when it
comes to sexist acts or sexist slurs made by men, the level of sexist disputes has decreases
drastically with time. The play "Trifles" displays the major difference is the mindset of the split
sexes. The setting presents a time when women were belittled and not taken seriously. Susan

Yes, women's bodies are used to sell products, or portray a "perfect image" of how men want their
women, but women must voluntarily advertize their own bodies. Some females may considered
"sexy" or "racy" photos and commercials to be degrading, but those women choosing to do so can
find it very empowering. They not only feel confident but they are becoming something that men
swoon over and yearn for; ergo creating a sense of authority. Sexism runs rampant in every facet of
our society.
The story of "Trifles" exposes the sexism that women dealt with then, and still to some extent deal
with today. The men show major examples of diminishing and downplaying the women's
intelligence when ignoring them throughout examining the crime scene. Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale
find incriminating evidence against Minnie, but the men never think to ask them their opinion; they
are too preoccupied searching for solid tangible, evidence. Although the women find evidence to
believe Minnie is the killer, I believe they feel somewhat responsible for her. This concluding that
both genders are somewhat sexist. The men on the husband's side, and the women on Minnie's side.
Perception differs with their gender. While the men look for "something to show anger, or sudden
feeling", something more obvious; the messy kitchen is labeled as bad housekeeping, instead of
being used as evidence. The clues are presented but their male perception enables the men from
seeing them. (Glaspell's)

Sexism As A Scientist Or Engineer

have been discrimination of being unfit or not 'apprehensiveness' enough for being a scientist or

they would destroy something. Determining or judging the action of the gender in different position

What comprises sexism and feminism? Do sexist images in the media have an impact on women
and girls? And, what are the broader political issues here? I am hoping that we can reframe the
debate around sexism and nudity in the media in a way that makes sense for socialists.
We're all probably aware of sexist representations in the media from newspapers and magazines to
the movies, TV and radio. For example, Rolling Stone magazine didn't used to be a soft porn
magazine, but it is so common now for female musicians to be in soft–porn poses on its cover.

As one student told the BBC's Inside Out program: "I work when I want to. I make the amount of
money I want to, and if I don't feel like it I can quit. No–one is pushing me to do it."
"But contrast this with the comment of a regular frequenter of lap dancing clubs: "It makes me feel
like a king to be sitting there with all these women surrounding me, giving me loads of attention.
Nothing beats the thrill of calling a woman over, sitting her down and talking to her, knowing that if
you give her money she is going to take all her clothes off. It's great to have that kind of control, that
power, and it's an ego boost to have all girls competing with each other to dance for you."
"However empowered individual dancers might feel (and of course not all dancers are well paid) lap
dancing itself promotes the idea that women are not thinking 'whole' beings but body parts – objects
available for men to control and enjoy." 1
This new 'feminism' also represents a shift from a collective to an individualistic approach to
women's equality. If a given woman feels oppressed, feels exploited, or feels demeaned, it is
because something is wrong with her. Perhaps she is not aggressive enough or not motivated
enough. She has not figured out how to advance within the current system. When women buy into

Examples Of Sexism In The Crucible
Sexism and the Crucible Ever since the beginning of the technology era, all unethical things have
been glorified. Shootings, rape, kidnappings, and cheating seem to be all over the media today.
However, they do not focus on what actually happened, but instead on who is the victim and who is
the villain. Has sexism changed since 1692 and what beliefs about it stayed the same? Adultery,
slut–shaming are examples of how sexism still prevail as an issue that women must face, however,

To start, in high school girls get so much more hate for anything they do sexually. Rumors spread

because the girl told me herself and she got a lot of disrespect due to the fact that she cheated.
Although, the boyfriend cheated as well and really did not face too many problems. To continue,
Kristen Stewart cheated multiple times on her boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Kristen cheated with the
director of her movie Snow White and the Huntsmen. Pattinson allegedly tried his hardest to forgive
and forget but eventually that relationship ended. Additionally, the cheating also broke up the
director and his wife as well. To start, almost all the blogs and stories about cheating say Kristen
Stewart cheats on Robert. Barely any mention that the director cheated on his wife and they had
already had two kids. Cheating is wrong either way, but it is a lot worse to have children that find
out their father was not faithful to their mother. However, it is barely mentioned that he did such a
preposterous thing, not just to one person like Kristen but three. Kristen still faces much hate for
doing this while no one really speaks about the director. It can be said because Kristen and Robert
were a more known couple than the director, Rupert Sanders, and his wife, but that does not change
the fact that it takes two people to cheat. Both spouses were devastated yet only one of the cheaters

Sexism
Sexism, also known as gender discrimination is the prejudice subjected to a person based on their
sex or gender (Rosen 542). Sexism affects either gender, but it is mainly high against women and
the girl child. The vice has strong links to the stereotypes and gender roles that individuals in society
identify with. These beliefs and stereotypes may include the idea that one gender (male) is superior
to the other (female). This article reviews the subject of sexism and details examples where this vice
happens. Facts from research around this topic are also availed together with statistics around the
issue.
Main Ideas
Over the years, sexism has been described as an open hostility toward women. However, over
current decades, sexism has become less obvious because of emerging normative pressures not to
convey unconcealed hurtful observations. Example of current sexist beliefs includes the way people
in the modern generation consider husband and wife equally. Sexism can be experienced at school,
the workplace or via the objectification of a particular sex. Extreme sexism may foster gender
discrimination, rape, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence, including but not limited
to pornography and prostitution (Alhassan & Nantogma 400). Sexism is not a vice that started

every commercial has someone missing proper attire, or insinuating the other is dumb or not as

But, some people see it as a joke and laugh it off. That's the thing about this advertising campaign:
The ads can offend and entertain in equal measures (McManis). Though on the outside looking in,
we would think something would be done about it. Many of the commercials we see for home
improvement products have the routine stay–at–home mom trying to figure out a way to make her
job easier. These include Glade, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox, and Swiffer. The list could go on. In
these commercials, the women are seen in the old fashioned way of they're only good enough to
clean and take care of kids. What about fathers who stay at home? Or the working single mother or
father who have the same responsibilities and more? These commercials fail to show the reality of
everyday life. No men are shown with these responsibilities, making it seem as if they are incapable
of such tedious duties.
Watching a football game, we can usually find an attractive young lady being swept off her feet by a
less attractive man after he opens his beer of choice. Or, if we're lucky, we can witness several
young women on a desert island with the male drinker after, of course he opens his can of beer.

the proper beverage. These women seldom have anything to say besides "Yes" making them seem

Sexism In Society
Sexism, racism, and violence have been a part of the world since the beginning of time. Everyday, it
is clear that issues such as these continue to play a role in the lives of many people. Our society has
moved forward in the direction towards ending racism, sexism, and violence, but these changes still
do not meet the standard of decency. Despite the modern movement for women's rights being
implemented into today's society, as well as efforts to eliminate racism and violent language,
humanity needs to become more progressive in order to create a truly equal society. Violence in
language gives the general public the image that violence is tolerable, while also promoting
brutality. Language guidelines from the North York Women Teacher's Association alter violent
phrases such as, "get away with murder" into its alternative, "avoid consequences." Violence has
made its way into modern language where the majority of people do not necessarily try to stop it.

will not cease to exist unless the degrading of women stops. According to Kakutani's "The Word

Negative Effects Of Sexism
Eradication of Sexism
Sexism is another social problem troubling human societies all over the world. Though the roots of
sexism are a lot less broad when compared to racism (when taking into account there are only two
flexible, recognizable human sexes), there is still a large amount of conflict surrounding the social
problems between men and women. If one might not know sexism (or gender discrimination) is
prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. Sexism is something that can be
affected by anyone. It has been effective mostly in history as well as the present, which has
predominantly targeted many women and girls. As many people believed in Laurel Ulrich's quote "
Well behaved women seldom make history " meant women who behave themselves as women
should, rarely make history. This quote is accurate because each woman who made history had to
portray themselves in a terrible manner or behave badly at some point in time to get there point
across or make themselves significant . The eradication of sexism needs to be enforced because
sexism creates disadvantages towards women in the world, substantially in the workplace. Sexism
allows the development of negative emotions in young girls and women, and it impacts the self–
perception of men. I would like to change the issue of sexism towards women in our society. This
conflict troubles societies around the country in several ways, and taking several forms. Sexism is a

Sexism

  • 1. Sexism Since the beginning of history, sexism has always been a prominent barrier between sexes. The notion that women are not on the same level as men has always been in existence. We see that even during the book of exodus this belief stems from the creation of Eve, through a rib of Adam. From scripture, Eve 's roll was to be considered as a servant and a temptress, the sole reason why Adam ate the apple. Consequently Eve is blamed as being the reason mankind is not living in a paradise. Sexism has continued throughout ancient history and continues occur in our own environment to this day. Sexism is defined as the discrimination or hatred against people based on their gender rather then their individual ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most people would debate that men are much stronger and better athletes. According to the race however, there was very little difference between man and woman versus the first man and the last man. Clearly this shows that gender bias if not ethical is clearly incorrect. What about emotions? Do certain genders carry more tendency to act a certain way? In 1970 a study conducted by two psychologists at Stanford university showed four amazing things. They sifted though nearly 1500 research papers, studied behavior tendencies and only found four differences: Males are more aggressive then females, girls have better verbal skills then boys, boys have better visual–spatial ability and boys have better mathematical ability from about thirteen onward. Another interesting piece of information that they discovered that on

  • 3. Sexism Against Women Sexism is prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination, commonly towards women, on the basis of their sex. Sexism is still present in today's society, especially against women. There are many ways as to how people are sexist towards women. The three places that sexism against women is a big issue: the media, pop culture and the sports industry. Some people do not allow women the same opportunities that men have just because they are women. By creating sexism in these places, people are treating women unfairly and with disrespect. The stereotypes that are created by women paints a certain image of women that people believe to be true. The media is especially known for creating unrealistic images of women. One place where sexism against women is present is in the media. Women are portrayed a certain way in advertisements, like TV commercials. The author of the book, book title, stated that, "according to advertisers, women drink iced tea and eat yogurt, salads, chocolate and cake", (DiAngelo and Sensoy, 86). This statement paints a certain stereotype of women based on the things that they eat. It is a known fact that all women do not have the same diet and do not eat all the same foods, so it is weird that advertisers say that all women eat the foods that they mentioned. In today's society, social media is now a big part of the category media. An article was written on the topic of sexism involving Twitter. The article mentions how hashtags that are used on twitter are sexist. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Sexism Is A Social Disease "Sexism is a social disease." This quote was made by someone anonymous, but it is shockingly true. Sexism is a large issue in our society. Women are oppressed by so many, and ridiculed for choices that they make. They are shot down for anything they do, and we must change this. Through public speaking, rallies, and social media, we can help to combat sexism. "The best way to start making a difference against such small–mindedness in real life is to make people aware of real–life examples of sexist and unacceptable behavior, as opposed to paying undeserved attention to distracting symbols that, in the end, are nothing more than symbols, and don't personally or directly affect anyone in nearly the same way as real actions." (How to Really Make a Stand... 1) The article states that the way to begin making a difference against sexism is to make people aware of it. I believe that this is true, and through social media and public events, you can do this. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As soon as a sexist comment or action has been made, call it out either by using a stock phrase or indicating your discomfort, dislike, or unresponsiveness. This shuts down the possibility for repetition." (Moore 1) This article says that one way to combat sexism is by calling out the person who made the sexist comment. I think this is an exceptional way to make the person aware of their sexist actions so that they will not do it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Sexism And Hostile Sexism Sexism, is a prejudice plain and simple. One of the earliest forms of violence directed toward women was the Witch Hunt Trials of the Middle Ages. Bishops debated whether a woman was really human at all. If her nose were too long, she had red hair, a humped back, or if she was exceptionally beautiful, she was thought to be a witch and was burned at the stake. There was an estimated nine million women burned during the Witch Trials. During the "Women's Liberation Movement in the 1960's, feminist theorists explained that oppression of women was widespread in nearly all human society, and spoke of sexism instead of male chauvinism. Male chauvinists were usually individual men who expressed the belief that they were superior to women" (Napikoski). By the mid 20th century sexism was established and began to appear in advertising. Between the 1970's and 1990's women began to feel more equal to men until the 1980's where they were portrayed as sex symbols on national television (The Origin and History of SEXISM). There are two main types of sexism, benevolent and hostile, and their definitions are opposite from one another. Hostile sexism is what most people perceive as sexism today as it seems sexism is occurring more and more often and is, notably, more vulgar. It is the notion that women are inferior or not as worthy; a belief that males are intrinsically superior. For many years women have been degraded and looked down upon with the idea that their place is in the kitchen with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Racism, Sexism, And Classism Merlyn Manoj April 13, 2016 Period 2 Kale Then and Now: Changes of Racism, Sexism, and Classism In To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, Jem and Scout, the protagonists in the book, experience and learn about the problems of racism, sexism, and classism when their father, Atticus, agrees to defend Tom Robinson, an African American, in a trial. Set in the 1930s, most people were treated unfairly because of their race, gender, or social class. Even though problems about race, gender, and class decreased over time, these problems are still very prevalent today. Even though racism decreased dramatically over the past decades, there are still problems today that are strikingly similar to the problems in To Kill A Mockingbird. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus explains to Jem and Scout about the unfairness of court: "when it 's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They 're ugly, but those are the facts of life" (Lee 220). Even though this was set in the 1930's, juries from court still have a racial bias to this day. In fact, from the Sentencing Project, an organization that advocates change in sentencing policy and advocating alternatives to incarceration, it has been shown that African Americans are "six times more likely to be incarcerated than white males... if current trends continue, one of every three black Americans can expect to go to prison in his lifetime" (Sentencing Project 1). • 7. Benevolent Sexism Essay Benevolent sexism is a courteous attitude toward women (which feels favorable) but in actuality is sexist because the motivation behind it casts women as weak individuals in need of men's assistance. This evaluation of gender only appears subjectively positive, yet damages gender equality. Benevolent sexism is harmful because of the motivation that drives it. However, if the motivation of the individual (men or women) assisting is not based on the original assumption that women are weak individuals that need help, I believe purely chivalrous actions makes a better world and should be encouraged. The friendly, fuzzy feelings from benevolent sexism come at a cost, " [they]..aren't all sunshine and butterflies" (Tannenbaum, 2013). Even though they benefit women (compliments, perks), benevolent sexism often creates a damaging stereotype for women in male dominated fields. The motivation behind the chivalrous acts directed towards women comes from the traditional gender stereotyping of masculine dominance, thus proposing inequality based on gender. ... The insidious fraction allows it to influence opinions of an individual in a non–direct way, which is much harder to detect (it hides under the guise of positivity). For example, imagine a hypothetical situation––a firm is voting to legalize an anti–female policy in leadership roles because they lack the assertiveness and toughness to lead. The voting would cause an uproar and protested because it directly promotes gender inequality in the workplace. However, consider the second hypothetical situation––a firm is voting to legalize an anti–female policy in leadership roles because they are much more attentive to details than men and make better accountant (or any other non–leadership role). The latter situation (even though the purpose of the policy is the same) would cause less uproar and protest due to the different wording and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Racism And Sexism Racism and sexism are the unfortunate realities to exist in our society. Both of said institutions can shape the experiences of people, especially people of color. In order to speak more about this, it is best to define what racism and sexism is. Racism can be defined as the belief in the superiority of one race over another. On the other hand, sexism is the behavior, conditions, or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on gender. It comes as no surprise that both acts of racism and sexism often, if not always, results in the discrimination as well as prejudice towards people of different races, ethnicities, as well as gender. It has been theorized that racism and sexism are not fixed ideas, rather, they are social constructs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Sexism Research Paper Sexism Exists We no longer live in the "Mad Men" era, but the modern workplace is still responsible for some of the Mad Men style sexism. Women often times have trouble getting hired for important jobs, obtaining high–level positions, and they commonly face greater harassment threats in the office. Despite big gains, women only make up slightly more than ten percent of big company chief financial officers. More than one–third of public companies had zero women senior officers, according to a recent survey from Catalyst, an organization aimed at expanding business opportunities for women. According to a recent study from the Institute for Women's Policy Research, a woman gets paid seventy–seven cents to every dollar a man makes. That's a difference of more than $10,000 per year on average. Among recent college graduates, women make eighty– two percent of what men make. In their first year of work after graduation college, men make $7,6000 more than women on average, this is according to a fact sheet from Congress' joint economic committee. The trend continues even after women began to rise up the corporate ladder, female worker make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here are the reasons why I am a part of the 16% of people who do not believe sexism is still an issue today. Men are statistically more likely to take jobs that women won't. In March of 2016, 80,543 men, six–teen years and over were employed. In March of 2016, only 70,777 women, six–teen years and over were employed. This is not because of sexist reasoning, this is because of women not wanting to do the hard work that a man is willing to do daily. So whenever I am asked if I think this drastic employment rate is sexism, I will firmly say no. I believe that the employment rate difference has to do with the fact that many women refuse to work jobs that are physically more challenging or that require long ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Institutional Sexism In The Workplace The U.S. is known to have many issues in its society including racism and sexism. There have been laws that were made in attempt to stop discrimination against color but to this day, women still aren't seen as equals to men. Institutional sexism is the discrimination of a certain gender at a workplace. Sexism is portrayed in the differences between the number of men versus the number of females that have management positions, get higher pay, have more opportunities for advancement and, are more likely to get hired. This oppression against women can impact lives of many women emotionally, mentally, and physically. Sexism also leads to sexual violence and domestic violence because the idea that women and men are unequal causes women to be taken advantage of at home, at work, and everywhere else. Institutional sexism is a topic that needs to be talked about more because the U.S. needs have a law that doesn't allow sexual discrimination anywhere. Institutional sexism in the workplace is an ongoing issue nationally and internationally that takes advantage of women and their work that needs to stop. There are many industries and working fields where women weren't trusted to be leaders when compared to men. The healthcare field has been filled with women for a while yet most of the leadership positions are mostly occupied with men. Men are more likely to have leadership positions in both men and female dominated fields (Stamarski and Son Hing 2015). Women face this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When sexism is mentioned, which gender comes to mind first? Society seems to have attached the sexism issue on females exclusively. The topic of sexism occurs in indirect and direct ways in all types of media. Sexual discrimination will continue to exist l if nobody attempts to end it. Sexism leads to downgrading women and men's capability. Insecurities and violence are a leading result of sexism. Furthermore, in recent years we have seen how the media and news over and over again confirms sexism as a very serious problem in the workplace that affects women from all different levels of society. From powerful producers to government dignitaries, women seem to be often exposed to situations that undermine their dignity and often casts a shadow of insecurity and despair. Is clearly not enough to admit that sexism is a problem, what is important to address is why employers tend to overlook or dismiss such behavior in the work environment. • 13. Sexism In Workplace Sexism in the workplace Throughout human history, the female gender was seen as lesser hen men. Women were told they couldn't vote until the 1910's, they were put down for doing jobs like construction working, mining, and factory work. In fact, the first major push for women in working class jobs in America wasn't until the 1940s. The main reason for this was that the U.S needed mass production to beat the Axis powers in World War Two. But things have changed, right? We are living in the age of equality where men and women are treated as equal, and neither are put down for their genders. So why is it all over the news about men and women not being treated equal? Constantly we hear about Donald Trump (albeit not for just sexism in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While there are plenty of people backing up the idea of women make 79 cents to every dollar men make, and in some cases this is true, women do make less because they're women. But you should know that your media is lying to you. The wage gap isn't nearly as large as it is made out to be. The equation for the women's pay gap, as told by American Progress's website, "calculated by dividing the median earnings of full–time, year–round, working women by the median earnings of full–time, year–round, working men, all rounded to the nearest $100. The wage gap looks slightly different depending on which data source is used in the calculation." Now do you notice anything missing? It does not take in occupation, skill level, previous experiences, pretty much it doesn't mention anything to do with qualifications for the job. The reason everyone thinks that the pay gap is a thing is because of the media. They'll Do anything to get the public riled up that they ignore facts. These big media source outlets get so involved in politics that they block out any distinct point made. So, to sum up, the wage gap does not exist to the extent claimed because It does not take in the idea of occupation of the worker, the skill level, the basic education, and that it doesn't even take in jobs that are low income, for example teachers. • 19. Benevolent Sexism In Business Better Together: Why Benevolent Sexism Is Harmful to Women in Business In the fight for equality, it is obvious to defend against forms of sexism that are used for antagonization. However, chivalrous attitudes that cast women as weak and in need of men are often ignored. Social psychologists have studied the effects of benevolent sexism using experiments testing one's performance shortly after being labeled as incompetent. Benevolent sexism is not a series of compliments, but rather a threat to one's ability to think, learn, and perceive information. The workplace is an environment of which benevolent sexism occurs most often and one of which most are familiar with. Benevolent sexism in business does not allow men and women to achieve the same goals within the work place. Forcing an individual into a social role can limit them to only specific simple tasks that do not allow for maximum personal growth. Often times, benevolent sexism is mistaken for a well–intentioned compliment. However, there are real world dangers that come with assigning a stereotype to an individual. Within business, one of the most common forms of benevolent sexism is assuming that because a woman has the ability to bear children she should engage in any nurturing roles. This article went into discussing how everyone has internalized sexism, believing in sexism in their head, whether they like to believe it or not. This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in order for them to be respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because all of these social codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One example of this was in the article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around them someday becoming mothers. Women are expected to have children and then take time off from work to raise their children. No one believes that men should be expected to stay at home and raise children because it is not the societal norm. • 21. The Importance Of Benevolent Sexism When I first stumbled upon benevolent sexism in the textbook I had to stick to the section for a little bit. I was very intrigued by the concept as I was completely unaware that it classified as sexism, let alone that it was actually harmful to the egalitarian movement. Benevolent sexism is mistaken with an appreciation and respect for women, which can make it hard to identify and then classify correctly. In the textbook, this concept is described as the following: "a more subtle kind of sexism that argues for women's special niceness and purity (...) You may initially think that benevolent sexism cannot be harmful. However, it still emphasizes that women are different from men and that they are also weaker." (Matlin 58) This struck a chord with me particularly because I did initially think that it could not be harmful, and was oblivious to the consequences that its existence entailed. Discussion in class as well as textbook readings showed that this sexism was very much alive and running in our society, which prompted me to think, why is it that there aren't obvious efforts against benevolent sexism? My own experience answered this question; a great portion of women do not see this invisible sexism and endorse it unknowingly. This concept goes well with what we discussed in class known as "gender complementarity", the idea that women serves as complements to men, we are here to assist them and complete them. This idea fetishes the woman and turns her into an object with a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Sexism : The Definition Of Sexism In Society Sexism Sexism is defined as "prejudice, stereotyping, or discrimination on the basis of sex." Sexism is also another term for sex discrimination and/or gender discrimination. Sexism is a social issue because of the unequal rights and privileges between men and women, but also because of the way it promotes women and men to act on a basis of ancestral roles. Sexisms grip on society is a long and painful history, that hasn't fully evolved and may never. Though sexism does effect men, it mostly effects women. Women haven't always had the same privileges and rights as men, they weren't allowed to vote, could not join the military, had little job opportunities, and rarely had a college education. Whereas, men typically were able to join the military, were allowed to vote, own property, have jobs, and usually were able to obtain a college education. It was commonly believed that women should remain in their homes, to raise the children and take care of their home and husband. While men should be at work to pay the bills, and put food on the table. Different countries have taken different steps to advance women's rights, and have made many great changes. "In 1994, ten countries had women as the heads of their governments, however, in more than 100 countries there were no woman serving on their legislative bodies" (Busse, Greene, Haynes). The problem of gender sexism exists from the beginning of the history and still continues in today's society. "Sexism, like many forms of prejudice, only survives in a traditional environments and this is how it continues in China" from All–China Women's Federation's website, yet this problem is still happening in China, but there must be a way to solve it. According to Katz (2013), it will take not only women activists, but men who are willing to reject the sexist attitudes of the males who have come before them to eradicate the gender inequality which is commonplace in today's society. Additionally, sex segregation in the workplace deserves acknowledgement. In the twenty first century, so many advancements have been made for women in this area; and yet, women are still left disadvantaged in the economic arena (Bernstein, 2013). Constantly throughout time, men exploit and look down on women. They were subjected to stay in the house and forbidden to explore activities and careers that were not for women. With medical and technological advances, women started to stand up for themselves and exit out of their traditional roles at home. Today, a tremendous amount of progress has been made towards gender equality, but women still battle against sexist attitudes. This includes a perpetuating rape culture that blames women for dressing in a way that is "asking for it" to women making 77 cents on the dollar when compared to a man's salary. These are examples of sexism women are subjected to and the authors in the articles "Marked Women," "Sexism in English," and "A Woman's Beauty," argue how women are marked based upon various aspects of their life whereas men are unmarked and viewed in a holistic way. Every action, every choice, every piece of a woman tells a story about her even if it is not her intention. In the article "Marked Women," Deborah Tannen sheds light on the idea that women are inherently marked in everything they do. For example, Rolling Stone magazine didn't used to be a soft porn magazine, but it is so common now for female musicians to be in soft–porn poses on its cover. Howard Stern, the radio DJ, is always asking his female guests and callers what they are wearing. Stern focuses heavily on women's physical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As one student told the BBC's Inside Out program: "I work when I want to. I make the amount of money I want to, and if I don't feel like it I can quit. No–one is pushing me to do it." "But contrast this with the comment of a regular frequenter of lap dancing clubs: "It makes me feel like a king to be sitting there with all these women surrounding me, giving me loads of attention. Nothing beats the thrill of calling a woman over, sitting her down and talking to her, knowing that if you give her money she is going to take all her clothes off. It's great to have that kind of control, that power, and it's an ego boost to have all girls competing with each other to dance for you." "However empowered individual dancers might feel (and of course not all dancers are well paid) lap dancing itself promotes the idea that women are not thinking 'whole' beings but body parts – objects available for men to control and enjoy." 1 This new 'feminism' also represents a shift from a collective to an individualistic approach to women's equality. If a given woman feels oppressed, feels exploited, or feels demeaned, it is because something is wrong with her. Perhaps she is not aggressive enough or not motivated enough. She has not figured out how to advance within the current system. When women buy into the basic concepts of capitalist culture, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Examples Of Sexism In The Crucible Sexism and the Crucible Ever since the beginning of the technology era, all unethical things have been glorified. Shootings, rape, kidnappings, and cheating seem to be all over the media today. However, they do not focus on what actually happened, but instead on who is the victim and who is the villain. Has sexism changed since 1692 and what beliefs about it stayed the same? Adultery, slut–shaming are examples of how sexism still prevail as an issue that women must face, however, the social effect today is still worse for women than men. Today in society with technology it is a lot harder to get away with cheating. It is not normal for people to be gone for long periods of time without telling anyone else. In 1692, John could have simply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To start, in high school girls get so much more hate for anything they do sexually. Rumors spread around about a girl who cheated on her boyfriend with a person at a different school. It was true because the girl told me herself and she got a lot of disrespect due to the fact that she cheated. Although, the boyfriend cheated as well and really did not face too many problems. To continue, Kristen Stewart cheated multiple times on her boyfriend Robert Pattinson. Kristen cheated with the director of her movie Snow White and the Huntsmen. Pattinson allegedly tried his hardest to forgive and forget but eventually that relationship ended. Additionally, the cheating also broke up the director and his wife as well. To start, almost all the blogs and stories about cheating say Kristen Stewart cheats on Robert. Barely any mention that the director cheated on his wife and they had already had two kids. Cheating is wrong either way, but it is a lot worse to have children that find out their father was not faithful to their mother. However, it is barely mentioned that he did such a preposterous thing, not just to one person like Kristen but three. Kristen still faces much hate for doing this while no one really speaks about the director. It can be said because Kristen and Robert were a more known couple than the director, Rupert Sanders, and his wife, but that does not change the fact that it takes two people to cheat. Both spouses were devastated yet only one of the cheaters was really blamed for the cheating that took place. It is unjust that women usually become bigger disgraces then men when they cheat. In the Crucible, Proctor mentions in the first act that he would rather cut off his hand than touch Abigail. In the second act, there is an inside view into the tension between Proctor and ... • 35. Sexism In Society Our society is strong, intelligent, growing, and many other things. One thing that's not so great about our society is that sexism has almost always been a problem, especially for women. Sexist jokes, songs, people, etc. have left the world to be discriminated because of what sex they are. There is sexism everywhere. In schools, work spaces, sports, video games, music, even churches. I think sexism is wrong because it hurts people emotionally and its just ridiculous to underestimate or overestimate someone just because of what sex they are. There is sexism going on everywhere, and one major place it's happening is in work spaces. People working as doctors, nurses, construction workers, architects, and more. When women become doctors, some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Women equal rights has been so big in the last few years, and people have forgotten that sexism still exists. If you find the solution to a problem, it's not fixed until you actually make the solution work, and we haven't yet. So many people still think that men have advantages over women, even if they don't know they think this. The truth is, people have been sexist before we even knew what sexism was. Many years ago, men would only let women stay home, make food, and care for the children. It took us so long to realize that this is wrong. For hundreds of years the triangle of superiority has gone men, then women; then people of color, but I'm not even going to go into that. Honestly, it should be people in general on the top. No one above, no one underneath. I admit, sexism has gotten better over the years, but it's still a problem in the world. I think it's great that we've acknowledged that we're being sexist, but now we need to take action. Actually try to not be sexist; Some people more than others. Our society has wildly improved, and we've come a long way. Now we just need to finish the final stretch of cutting sexism out of our ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Sexism Of Women No matter how far back we look in the history, we can say that women suffered sexism from the very beginning. It is sad to say, but it is a living thing, even in Hungary too. I think the bias of women can be separated to three major subject. Fistly, women usually suffers sexism on interviews. This happens because the companies ask them about what is their plans to start a family/ have a baby. In general, companies prefer to hire a man instead of woman, because the man wouldn't go on a birth–holiday obviously, like the lady would. The second field of sexism of women is the payment. There are a bunch of statistics (made by the General Statistics Office) which reveal that women generally get lower salaries than man – although the differences ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Sexism : Main Ideas And Aspects Of Sexism Smruti Patel Luis Nazario ENG 121 10/8/17 Coherence Sexism Sexism, also known as gender discrimination is the prejudice subjected to a person based on their sex or gender (Rosen 542). Sexism affects either gender, but it is mainly high against women and the girl child. The vice has strong links to the stereotypes and gender roles that individuals in society identify with. These beliefs and stereotypes may include the idea that one gender (male) is superior to the other (female). This article reviews the subject of sexism and details examples where this vice happens. Facts from research around this topic are also availed together with statistics around the issue. Main Ideas Over the years, sexism has been described as an open hostility toward women. However, over current decades, sexism has become less obvious because of emerging normative pressures not to convey unconcealed hurtful observations. Example of current sexist beliefs includes the way people in the modern generation consider husband and wife equally. Sexism can be experienced at school, the workplace or via the objectification of a particular sex. Extreme sexism may foster gender discrimination, rape, sexual harassment and other forms of sexual violence, including but not limited to pornography and prostitution (Alhassan & Nantogma 400). • 38. Sexism in Television Commercials Sexism in Television Commercials Many of us have seen a commercial and felt offended by the sexist attitudes represented. It appears that on every channel, there is another television commercial trying to sell its product with beautiful women. These commercials can range from selling beer to selling cars (Sadiq). From sports to personal hygiene and home improvement products. Almost every commercial has someone missing proper attire, or insinuating the other is dumb or not as intelligent. These commercials make men and women feel degraded and ashamed. Remember when the World Cup was the biggest sporting even in the world? But, some people see it as a joke and laugh it off. That's the thing about this advertising campaign: The ads can offend and entertain in equal measures (McManis). Though on the outside looking in, we would think something would be done about it. Many of the commercials we see for home improvement products have the routine stay–at–home mom trying to figure out a way to make her job easier. These include Glade, Scrubbing Bubbles, Clorox, and Swiffer. The list could go on. In these commercials, the women are seen in the old fashioned way of they're only good enough to clean and take care of kids. What about fathers who stay at home? Or the working single mother or father who have the same responsibilities and more? These commercials fail to show the reality of everyday life. No men are shown with these responsibilities, making it seem as if they are incapable of such tedious duties. Watching a football game, we can usually find an attractive young lady being swept off her feet by a less attractive man after he opens his beer of choice. Or, if we're lucky, we can witness several young women on a desert island with the male drinker after, of course he opens his can of beer. These advertisements present women as a goal, a trophy if you will, that can only be attained with the proper beverage. These women seldom have anything to say besides "Yes" making them seem like unintelligent objects (Sadiq). This ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Sexism In Society Sexism, racism, and violence have been a part of the world since the beginning of time. Everyday, it is clear that issues such as these continue to play a role in the lives of many people. Our society has moved forward in the direction towards ending racism, sexism, and violence, but these changes still do not meet the standard of decency. Despite the modern movement for women's rights being implemented into today's society, as well as efforts to eliminate racism and violent language, humanity needs to become more progressive in order to create a truly equal society. Violence in language gives the general public the image that violence is tolerable, while also promoting brutality. Language guidelines from the North York Women Teacher's Association alter violent phrases such as, "get away with murder" into its alternative, "avoid consequences." Violence has made its way into modern language where the majority of people do not necessarily try to stop it. According to Michiko Kakutani, a Pulitzer Prize–winning literary critic, "the prohibition of certain words, phrases, and ideas is advanced in the cause of building a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sexism in modern life is men receiving a higher salary than women for just being men. The idea that women cannot be strong while being independent is absurd. Society uses harsh language towards women as if the negativity in the words have a neutral tone and meaning, when in fact they represent the very reason why women are still viewed as weaker and dependent upon men. Sexism will not cease to exist unless the degrading of women stops. According to Kakutani's "The Word Police," the 1991 edition of the Random House Webster's Dictionary includes linguistic mutations to avoid sexism, such as the change from "women" to "womyn," and "waiter" or "waitress" to "waitron." This shows how some communities have accepted that both genders should be equally treated and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Negative Effects Of Sexism Eradication of Sexism Sexism is another social problem troubling human societies all over the world. Though the roots of sexism are a lot less broad when compared to racism (when taking into account there are only two flexible, recognizable human sexes), there is still a large amount of conflict surrounding the social problems between men and women. If one might not know sexism (or gender discrimination) is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. Sexism is something that can be affected by anyone. It has been effective mostly in history as well as the present, which has predominantly targeted many women and girls. As many people believed in Laurel Ulrich's quote " Well behaved women seldom make history " meant women who behave themselves as women should, rarely make history. This quote is accurate because each woman who made history had to portray themselves in a terrible manner or behave badly at some point in time to get there point across or make themselves significant . The eradication of sexism needs to be enforced because sexism creates disadvantages towards women in the world, substantially in the workplace. Sexism allows the development of negative emotions in young girls and women, and it impacts the self– perception of men. I would like to change the issue of sexism towards women in our society. This conflict troubles societies around the country in several ways, and taking several forms. Sexism is a recurring problem in our country that has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
