1. WHY DO BASEMENTS FLOOD?
With water in your basement ,precious belongings can be seriously damaged if not destroyed. Walls and floors can be permanently
stained. Even worse, a wet or moist basement that is left untreated can develop mold growth that can spread to the rest of your home.
but what causes basement to flood?
SOMETHING BROKE
Burst pipes
broken water heater
broken washing machine
failed sump pump
HOW IT WAS BUILT
cracks in the walls and floor
the clay bowl effect
the stack effect
condensation and humidity
SOMETHING BROKE
if a pipe bursts, a washing machine breaks, a sump
pump fails, or a water heater bursts, you basement can be suddenly flooded.
You will need to clear the water, dehumidify the basement, and fix the broken appliance or pipe.
CRACKS IN THE WALLS & FLOOR
As cement cures, it shrinks. If the cement walls and floor of your basement were poorly built, of if your home is aging, cracks
can appear. Leaks also often occur at the seam of the wall and the foundation.
THE CLAY BOWL EFFECT
When the home is built, a hole slightly larger than the home is excavated.
The foundation and basement are built in that hole.
The earth that is put back into the hole is looser than the virgin earth collects water that puts pressure on the basement and
tries to find any way in.
THE STACK EFFECT & RELATIVE HUMIDITY
Hot air rises and exits out of the upper floors and attic.
A vacuum is created that pulls air into the home through the lower floors and basement.
Warm, humid air enters the basement where it cools. the relative humidity of the air rises(even if no moisture is added )and
condensation forms.
Even without condensation, humidity of 60% or higher is an ideal environment for mold, which can spread spores
throughout the house.
