Transformational Leadership
o Coined by Downton in 1973
o Popularized by Burns in 1978
“Occurs when one or more persons engage with others
in such a way that leaders and followers raise one
another to higher levels of motivation and morality”
(Burns, 1995, p. 101).

  • 3. Three Questions 1. How did we design an orientation program that combines transformational leadership and mentoring? 2. Which components of transformational leadership can be improved through mentorship? 3. Does using a transformational leadership mentoring program work?
  • 4. Design o Orientation • How to do the job • Completed in a short amount of time o Onboarding • Acclimate new hire to your organization • Can take six months to one year o Mentoring • Helps with onboarding • Assists with transformation of new hire from follower to leader
  • 5. Transformational Leadership o Coined by Downton in 1973 o Popularized by Burns in 1978 “Occurs when one or more persons engage with others in such a way that leaders and followers raise one another to higher levels of motivation and morality” (Burns, 1995, p. 101).
  • 6. Literature Review o Studies reviewed: Barling, Weber, & Kelloway, 1996; Hassan, Fuwad, & Rauf, 2009; Mason, Griffin, & Parker, 2014 • Investigated the effectiveness of transformational leadership training programs • Found these programs have a positive effect on employees
  • 8. Results o Gallup’s CliftonStrengths Assessment • One-hour assessment consists of 177 pairs of statements which measure your natural patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving in order to determine your talents o The assessment was taken three times: • September 2015 • January 2018 • October 2018
  • 9.
