Sarolta Ban
Surreal photography is an art form where photographers like Sarolta Ban take
hallucinogenic types of photos. These photos are not something you see
everyday the photos are normally taken and then edited intently until the photo
looks as good and weird as it can get. Sarolta Ban is a type of surreal
photographer where she takes more than a couple of days working on one photo
to get it to the best standard. Sarolta Ban is famous in the surreal photography
world mainly because her photographs really get the viewer thinking about what
is going on.
Composition rule of thirds
In this photo it is quite obvious to see that the photographer has taken rule of
thirds in mind because the photo hits the hot spots as you can see the man
walking the house is standing up straight nearly hitting the hot spots but the
main part of the photo which is the dog house is hitting the hot spot perfectly
which draws the person looking straight to that.
Lighting use of shadows
This photo has a very dark look to it the lighting is in a very precise place which
gives the photo the gloomy look which the photographer is going for, the
brightest part in the photo is the smoke/fog in the back ground which gives the
photo more of a dark effect by doing this it adds to the meaning of what the
photo is.
2. Toby Adshead
Focus depth of field
In this photo Sarolta Ban has used depth of field this gives the photo more of an
effect and makes the viewer look straight at the object that is important in the
case of this photo the man and the dog house is in focus but the rest isn’t but to
the viewer this does not matter the only thing that is important is the object
which is in focus. Depth is mainly used to show emotion or something which
needs to be seen.
Cropping
In this photo it is easy to see that it has been cropped because the smoke/fog in
the background fits perfectly with the photo plus with surreal photography it is
highly edited to make the photo look just right which means the photo has more
than likely been cropped.
What is the narrative?
The narrative of this photo shows a lot of different stories but the main thing that
jumps out of the photo is that the man walking the house may have lost his dog
recently and walks his house because he misses him this will explain why the
man is looking down at the floor as he is walking, this will also explain why the
photo is very dark and gloomy and there is no life in the photo because the man’s
dog has died.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in this photo is very dull and has nothing really in the
background the main prop in this photo isn’t just the dog house but the field the
man looks like he is walking this might show the dog he used to may have run on
it. Another good prop in this photo is the lead he is using to pull the house which
gives the whole photo its meaning.
3. Toby Adshead
Composition rule of thirds
In this photo Sarolta Ban has used rule of thirds very well as you can see the
digger fits perfectly in both of the hot spots which is going to bring the person
who looks at the photo to look straight there by doing this it shows that this is
the main part of the photo and the most important thing to look at.
Lighting use of shadows
This photo shows a lot of shadows as you can see the diggers which are
representing trees fading of in to the distance this adds effect it makes it look like
it is never ending also with the lighting of the fog it makes the diggers a lot more
scary but also adds the effect of darkness and gloominess this helps a lot and
makes the photo what it is.
Focus depth of field
The depth of field in this photo is a key part because it helps to understand what
the photo is actually trying to get across, the digger that is in focus shows what
the photo actually because of the man admiring it gives the hint that the digger is
representing a tree also by only having this in focus and having the background
blurred adds the effect that the trail of diggers is never ending.
Cropping
Cropping this photo is highly effective with surreal photography every photo is
edited but with this photo getting rid of the left over photo which is not needed is
good because it is the only part you need to see and if you could see any more of
the photo it wouldn’t have the same effect.
4. Toby Adshead
What is the narrative?
The narrative of this photo is showing how big businesses are taking over forests
and other such big lands it the diggers represent what they are using to take the
trees down this is very effective because it adds meaning to the photo but the
main story line of the photo is the man still admiring the digger which would of
been a tree. Another thing which shows what is going on is the floor in the photo
its cracked due to pollution and vehicles driving over it this photo give an
example the we are killing our self’s by doing this to our wild life. Another story
this photo could tell is that robots and big new machinery is taking over man role
and making man feel small and by doing this it is sucking the colour out of life.
Mise-en-scene
Every object in this photo adds meaning such as the floor, man, digger and the
mist each one of these add to mise-en-scene, the props all add their own unique
meaning and by doing this it makes the photo seem a lot more that what it is, by
making the man look small it adds to the machinery taking over man kind and
taking all the jobs, but yet the floor looks polluted like the machinery is doing all
this and the mist adds a gloomy affect to what is going on and gives the image
more of a dark effect and adds to the dark picture the photographer is trying to
put forward.

Steve McCurry
Steve McCurry’s photographs are a portrait type of photography and he takes
photos exactly how he sees things even if the person is in pain or if the are in
danger. This type of photography adds more depth mainly because you know
the person on who the photograph is not behind and big lights or anything else
and you know the photograph was taken there and then. A portrait
photographer is a photographer that really catches the detail of a person and
also the emotions of the person. These types of photographers capture
everything that the person is feeling through imagery.
Composition rule of thirds
This photo uses rule of thirds very well you can see that every hot spot shows a
different part of the girls face also the girls eye is perfectly on the line even
though it is not on the hot spot it is still one of the most striking parts of the
photo.
Lighting use of shadows
The lighting in the photo is only produced by natural light however the girl is
placed perfectly and it gives her all the light that she needs, there is no real
shadow in the photo apart of the darker back ground which matches her
clothing.
Focus depth of field
6. Toby Adshead
The depth of field in this photo is the main part which brings the photo to life the
blurred out back ground really brings the girls face out and shows her real
emotion and all the detail in her face it also makes your look straight at her and
nothing else.
Cropping
This photo has more than likely been cropped this is because it fits the green
perfectly in the back ground with nothing else being a distraction, the photo also
looks to be cropped so you can see the girls face with perfect detail.
What is the narrative?
The photos narrative is to show the true emotion the Afghan girl and the things
that she is going through. The photo shows that she is just looking at something
but you don’t know what by doing this it makes the girl look very sad and scared
of what lays a head of her life while she is living between the wars that is going
on.
Mise-en-scene
In the photo that main visual colours are the green and red this is good because
the colours show different meanings and adds different atmosphere to the photo
where as if she was wearing bright pink and blue the photo wouldn’t have the
same effect on the viewer the other good visual in the photo is the green wall in
the back ground this plays a very important role towards the photo it’s not only
that the green matches her clothing it also shows that the place where she is
looks dark and gloomy which adds to the effect that there is a war going on.
Composition rule of thirds
The rule of thirds in this photo is very well done because everything that needs
to be looked at is perfectly in the middle box which makes the viewer look
straight at it by doing this it adds a lot more effect in the photo.
7. Toby Adshead
Lighting use of shadows
This photo also uses natural light which gives the photo more of a gloomy edge
because the light isn’t bright and all perfectly on the boy. Shadows aren’t really
used in this photo apart from just behind the child where you can see an outline
going all around which makes the child standout more towards the photograph.
What is the narrative?
The narrative of this photo is to show what is actually happening in this war on
what kids can get their hands on to because of what they are seeing around them
but however the boy is crying which makes him look like is being forced to do
what he is doing and may be showing another story that someone has told him to
do it and this is why he is crying. The narrative of this photograph is also truth it
shows what it is doing to the people who are suffering and no one can help them
as if they are just sitting there and dying.
Focus depth of field
The depth of field is hardly visible in the photo because the child stands out so
much against the grey wall but you can see that the back ground is slightly
blurred because the photographer want to make the boy the centre of attention
and make sure there are no distraction coming from the background on the
photo.
Cropping
This photo has quite obviously been cropped because by doing this it cuts out the
distractions from the back ground and makes the child seem like it’s just him
there and because this is set in the war there are no back drops so you need to
find one and crop out the wrong parts.
Mise-en-scene
The main thing that has the most impact in this photo is quite obviously the gun
even if it is real or not it shows everything about the photo if the gun was not
there the photo would completely change how you see the boy, the gun that the
boy looks like he is about to shoot himself with shows the real danger of the war,
the other thing that stands out in the photo is that the boy is crying if the boy was
not crying the photo would still be bad but it may look like the child is playing or
not being scared of the war but because he is crying it shows that there is a lot of
danger in the war and he is scared of them, his dirty t shit also shows that he
8. Toby Adshead
doesn’t have clothes to wear and that he is not look after properly while the war
is happening.
Robert Capa
War photography is a type of photography where the photographer has to risk their
life to take the photos. War Photography also means that you can normally only take
one photo before you have to move on because if you stay to take another photograph
you are risking your life even more. Robert Capa is a war photographer and because
he risks his life to take the photographs it adds more of an actual incite of what the
war was like. Robert Capa is also a photographer who takes photos as they are and
there is no lighting when he takes the photo.
Composition ruleof thirds
The ruleof thirds in this photo is used well; each hot spot of the
photo is filled up with something as you can see the bottom left hot
9. Toby Adshead
spot is filled with some sort of broken boat and the right of it is filled
with men about to fight.
Lighting use of shadows
This photo has a lack of contrast, which addsto the effect of the war.
The photo also looks like the colour has been drained which makes
the sea stand outa lot more. The photo also being black and white
addsaffect and makes it look gloomy which is what the photographer
is trying to get across.
What is the narrative?
The narrativeof this photo is to show what happened at the D-day
and to show the pain the soldiers wheregoing through. The photo is
a documentation of what truly happened on D-day showsthe pain of
World War 2.
Focus depthof field
The depthof field in this photo is used well and brings the soldiersin
to focus so you can see it is the main focal pointof the photo, you can
also see that the back ground is blurred outso the beach is the main
thing to look at.
Framing
Becausethe photo is documentation the framingof the photo is
straight in the middlebecause the picturehas to be taken there and
then which addsmoreeffect to the documentation photography. The
reason it was taken there and then is because bullets would of been
firing at him as well as the other soldiers.
10. Toby Adshead
Cropping
This photo has not been cropped becauseback then the facilities to
edit the photos would notof been accessible.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in this photo is war you can see the big anti tank metal bars
and the soldiers in there uniform, in the back ground you can also see the
carnage that is going on in the back ground. The sea also adds effect and makes
the photo feel cold.
Rule of thirds
The rule of thirds in the photo is used well because the hot spot looks just at the
top of the flag, which is one of the main focal points of the photo, another main
focal point is the army man on the right he is the main person getting the flag up
and he looks like he is putting the most effort in to the flag rising.
11. Toby Adshead
Lighting use of shadows
Because Robert Capa was a documentary photographer most of his photos lack a
lot of lighting and uses of shadows however in this photo it is very well lit. The
photo has a lack of contrast which adds to more of a war effect. The photo almost
looks blue to give it more of a cold feeling and by doing this it gives it more of a
war look.
What is the narrative?
The narrative of this photo is to show a documentation of what was going on in
the war Robert Capa took photos like this to give people and also to show them
what the army and the people fighting for the country are doing. Robert Capa
took this photo to give people hope about the war because raising a flag shows
that they have overcome what was originally there.
Focus depth of field
The focus depth of field is used very well in this photo, you can see this because
every soldier is in focus and the back ground/the sky isn’t really in focus by
doing this it bring the soldiers to the main focal point and more importantly the
flag. The main focus point of the photo is the flag having a sort of blurred out
back ground makes the flag seem a lot more important than it actually is.
Framing
Because the photo was taken as the war was happening the framing isn’t perfect
however the flag is in one of the hot spot on the top left corner which brings the
person looking to look straight at that point. The reason for the framing to not be
perfect is because Robert Capa was in the middle of a war zone which means that
he has to take the photos as fast as he can so him any the other soldiers don’t get
hurt.
Cropping
This photo would not have been cropped because back then this type of facility
would not have been accessible.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene in this photo is mainly the flag this is because it is the main
focal point and it is the main thing which the photographer wants the audience.
The other main thing in this photograph is also quite obviously the soldiers they
look like they are struggling which the flag this may be because they are tired out
12. Toby Adshead
from fighting and not had sleep in many days. Another big feature off this photo
is the ground they are standing on it looks like they are on a lot of rubble of some
sort of blown up house or some sort of bunker this adds effect because it shows
the hard work the soldiers have gone through.
