Robert Capa – Picture One
Purpose –
The purpose of the picture is to show
Robert Capa’s audience on how war
actually is. The picture was taken to show
people how war actually was, it made to
show people around the world that there
is soldiers dying around the world. The
picture shows soldiers on the floor, hiding
behind a metal barricades also as you can
see there is some dead soldiers
around the floor which gives the
picture more of an effect because
there is many dead soldiers on the
floor. This picture would generate
income due to the fact that it’s in a
collection called “The Magnificent
Eleven”. The main purpose of the
image is to generate income so that
Robert Capa will be able to pay for
bills etc. But another purpose for the
picture is to show the truth to people
on what is going on around the world.
Composition & framing –
Robert Capa has used the rule of thirds in this picture to make sure that it turns out
interesting. Also we see that Robert Capa has used natural lighting for this picture
because he wouldn’t have been able to set any lights up due to the fact that he was
in a war. By using natural lighting, it gives the picture more of a real feel because it’s
natural and not staged. The foreground for the picture would be the metal
barricades because they are the focus of the picture whereas the background of the
picture would be the boats, which make the picture more interesting. There
wouldn’t be a middle ground in the picture. We see that the picture is also taken in
landscape due to the fact that the photographer probably wanted more things inside
the picture to make it more interesting.
Image Analysis –
We see that the picture was taken in a black and white colour due to the fact that
there weren’t any colour cameras. But by having the picture in black and white it
doesn’t change in anyway even if there was colour in the picture. If there was colour
within the picture it may show more of a meaning due to the fact that there is colour

and that colour gives a meaning off the picture but by having the picture in black and
white, it still shows loads of meaning from the colours. By having the picture in black
and white it gives more of an impact due to the fact that it shows all of the people
that people are suffering from the war. The lighting for the picture was just natural
light which means that the natural light would have had to been perfect to make the
picture look interesting. As we can see that the picture is natural which shows
people suffering from being shot at. We see that any lighting hasn’t been used due
to the fact that he is in a battlefield and that he wouldn’t have enough time to setup
lights before he is actually shot.
Meaning –
The meaning of the photograph is to show the audience on how bad war is, it shows
us that people are suffering from being forced into the war and fighting for the
country. The picture is making a point towards people that view the picture due to
the fact that it portrays that loads of people have gone there and there isn’t many
left because many of them have died. The picture is making a massive statement
about the world because it’s a war picture which shows dead soldiers that have been
fighting for there country, this picture is basically telling everyone to stop fighting
due to the fact that many people are suffering from it.
Robert Capa – Picture Two
Purpose –
The photograph was taken because Robert Capa
wanted to show people on what happens if you
go to war. The picture was taken to show people
on how horrible war is and to make sure that it
gets to peoples head and that people protest to
stop the war. The picture would be shown in
newspapers, posters etc. this is because it shows
the people around the world of people suffering
from war because family members have gone to
war and died. This picture shows the real side of
the war without propaganda, this shows the
people on how war actually is. The picture would
generate income by people that want to use the
picture would have to pay for it so that they can
use it. Also if people wanted to see the picture,
they might have to pay for it. As we can see there
is a dead American soldier on the floor who has
been shot from having a house-to-house battle
with different soldiers.

Composition & framing –
As we can see Robert Capa has used the rule of thirds to make sure that the picture
turns out interesting. As you can see the body isn’t right in the middle, it’s
interesting how the body is split by the bottom left and the middle, and that most of
the chair is in the bottom right. By having natural lighting within the picture, it makes
it more interesting due to the fact that that the light is showing the man and
showing the blood on the floor which is reflecting the sun off it. Also we can see that
half of his body is lit up to make sure that you can see the dead soldier on the floor.
The foreground of the picture would be the blood and chair due to the fact that the
blood is mainly focused, as soon as you see the blood you will see the dead body
next to it. The middle ground for the picture would be the steps because it shows the
audience that the soldier was on the steps. The background is the tree in the back,
which is framed by the doorway; this would be the background because it makes the
picture more interesting.
Image Analysis –
We see that Robert Capa has taken the picture, in black and white because there
weren’t any cameras, which took pictures with colour. But having the picture in black
and white it still has the same impact as it would, this is because people that view
this picture will be able to imagine the colours of what the picture would look like
with picture. Robert Capa would of used natural lighting for the picture to make sure
that people are able to see the picture at the most naturalist point of view, he
wanted to make sure that the audience sees war as it is and how bad it is for people
that go in there and have family. This will show the people that view the picture that
people suffer from other people going into war because if someone from your family
went to war and then died, it will make you suffer. Robert Capa is trying to make the
war to end due to the fact that loads of people are suffering from the war. The
picture shows the natural blood on the floor; Robert Capa probably couldn’t of done
anything to help the soldier because he might have been shot in head. Robert Capa
would have had to make sure that the picture was taken at the perfect time to make
sure that picture looks interesting and that the lighting within the picture is perfect.
Robert Capa wouldn’t of had time to setup lighting to take this picture due to the
fact that there was a gun battle seconds before that picture was taken.
Meaning –
The main meaning of the photograph is to show people around the world that is very
hard and that it shouldn’t carry on due to the fact that there are many people
suffering around the world. The person within the picture could have had a family
and then they would have had to hear the horrible news from the army that he has
passed away from fighting. The picture is making a statement that people should
stop war because there is many people dying and loads of people are losing family
members to it. The picture portrays that the world is breaking because everyone is

fighting. The main meaning of the photograph is to show people that war is deadly
and that if it doesn’t stop people are going to keep dying.
Charlie Waite – Picture One
Purpose –
The photograph was taken to show people how
beautiful nature is. The purpose of the picture is to
show the contrast between the purple lavenders and
the blue sky. The picture would generate income from
selling them in galleries and online, they sell for a high
price due to the fact that they look so beautiful and
they catch people’s eyes. It would be shown at
galleries due to the fact that people would want to buy
them. And by showing the tree by itself on the end can
present loads of different things, but by having the
tree there is interesting due to the fact that it’s on its
own. This picture is basically taken to make sure that it
sells because Charlie Waite wants to make money, it
would sell because it looks so good and something that
doesn’t look real because how good it looks.
Composition & framing –
The rule of thirds hasn’t really been used due to the
fact that the tree is in the middle of it and that the
picture has leading lines within the lavenders which
make the picture look interesting, this is what makes
the picture sell loads of copies because the lines make
the picture look amazing. Also Charlie Waite is known
for having leading lines throughout his pictures. The
main focus of the picture is the tree because the leading lines direct the viewer’s eye
straight towards the main focus of the picture. This makes the picture good because
you are able to see the main focus of the picture because the leading lines are
pointing out the tree. The picture is very interesting due to the fact everything is
leading towards the tree, which is alone. Most of the picture is filled up with
lavenders but by having the tree by itself it will make sure that the viewer looks
towards the tree straight away.
Image Analysis –
Charlie Waite is one of the best landscape photographers; in this picture we see that
he has used loads of skill, which he has learned over the years to make sure it comes
out perfect. As you can see the leading lines throughout the lavenders it makes sure

that the viewers focus on one point of the picture, which is the tree. It’s the main
focus point due to the fact that you can see the leading lines within the lavenders,
which go straight to the tree. We see the colour contrast with the blue and purple
from the picture, the lavenders has been made to look different to sky to make sure
that the lavenders stand out which will lead to the tree. Natural lighting would have
been used due to the fact that he is taking a picture of a massive field filled with
lavenders and that he couldn’t light it up. He wouldn’t have been able to put lighting
into the picture because he is taking a picture of a big field. The colours within the
picture make the tree stand out, all of the colours are different to each other we see
the black and purple for the lavender and the white and blue for the sky. By having
loads of different colours in the picture, it makes sure that the tree stands out
because the black with the lavenders lead straight towards the main focus of the
picture. The picture gives a feel like you wish you was there due to the fact it would
have been so calm and relaxing and that you would love to enjoy the look of nature.
Meaning –
The main meaning of the picture is to make sure the audience enjoys the relaxing
feeling to the picture. It makes the audience want to be there and enjoy the relaxing
feeling. This picture makes the point that nature is beautiful and that if you was
there, you will enjoy the beautiful look of nature. This picture makes nature look
really relaxing, it makes sure world think about how relaxing nature is. It also makes
sure that people are able to go out of there own way and go looking for relaxing
places and then take pictures of it.
Charlie Waite – Picture Two
Purpose –
The picture was taken to show the upwards-leading
lines, it was taken to show his viewers how good the
picture looks because of the perfect lighting of the sun
and the perfect reflections of the trees. The main
purpose that the picture was taken is because Charlie
Waite needs to make money due to the fact that he
also has to pay bills like other people. The picture
would generate loads of income due to the fact that
Charlie Waite is a very popular photographer who sells
his images for a lot of money, this picture would cost
around £400. The picture would be shown at Charlie
Waite’s gallery and this would be very good for him
due to the fact that he has loads of fans that keep up
to date with all of his work. Charlie Waite makes loads
from his pictures because he is one of the best
landscape photographers and the way he takes the
pictures is amazing and that it makes people follow his
work.

Composition & framing –
The image has been composed in a way so that you can see the reflection of the
trees on the water, he would of made sure that you can see the reflection of the
trees in the water this is because it will make the picture look much better. Rule of
thirds hasn’t been really used due to the fact that there are many trees within the
picture but the main focus of the picture is the tree in the middle, which is mainly in
the middle frame. The middle tree is the main focus because it gives out the most
detail out of all of the trees. We can see the leading lines within the picture, the
leading lines lead upwards to the top of the image, this is because the trees grow
upwards and leading lines are going to the top of the image. We see that natural
lighting would have had been used in this picture because Charlie Waite wouldn’t of
had anything which can light up the woods like that, he took the picture at the
perfect moment which makes sure you can see the reflection of the trees in the
water. The sun is the most powerful lighting, there isn’t nothing that is more
powerful than the sun, so by having natural lighting within this pictures makes sure
that Charlie Waite would have had to take the picture at the right moment.
Image Analysis –
This picture makes sure that you have to see the reflection of the trees in the water;
it makes sure that the people that look at this image will enjoy it because the beauty
of the leading lines and that there is a reflection of the trees gives the picture more
of a meaning. All of the colours within the picture are different to each other
because we see the background of the picture, which is the sky and some bushes
behind all of the trees; the trees give the normal tree looking which loads of detail
coming off them. You can see the leading lines within the image because the
reflection of the trees adds more to the leading lines because it starts off the bottom
of the image and the goes upwards. The image would make people want to go out of
there way and go explore and look for beautiful locations where they can take an
image or enjoy the relaxing feeling of nature.
Meaning –
The main meaning of the photograph is to show the audience on how beautiful
nature is, the picture makes sure that the audience understands that you have to be
there at the perfect time to make sure you see the perfect image. The picture is
making a point, which is to make sure that the audience understands that nature is
beautiful and relaxing. You could say that the image says that the only way is up; this
is because the leading lines go upwards. The picture might inspire people to do
things for example if someone wanted to be a professional photographer, this
picture might inspire the person to go out and look for the perfect image.

Steve McCurry – Picture One
Purpose –
The main purpose of the picture was to make sure
that Steve McCurry makes money from it. He
would make loads of money from this due to the
fact that he is very famous. This picture would sell
over £200 because he is very famous and that
loads of people love his work. Another purpose of
this picture is to show the audience that the kid is
running away from something; it could be the
hands on the wall, which he is running away from.
Steve McCurry would of taken this picture because
he will be able to put it in his gallery and people
would buy it straight away due to the fact that he is
a very famous portrait photographer. The picture is
showing the moment of the kid running away, he
could be having fun or he could be running away
from something that he doesn’t want to be near.
Composition & framing –
The main focus of the image is the little kid because he is in the middle frame and
that he is running away from something, as soon as you look at the picture it will
make you looks at the little kid straight away. The hands on the wall are really
interesting due to the fact that the lead straight towards the little kid while he is
running. Its composed in a way which makes it look like the kid is running away from
something, it makes sure that the audience thinks that the little kid is running from
something. By having the hands on the wall it will show that the little kid is running
away from the hands which could indicate loads of different things. The rule of thirds
makes sure that the pictures focuses on the points that it needs to focus on, for
example in the left middle frame, you can see some hands inside the frame which
make sure that the hands are in focus and the little kid is in focus at the same time
due to the fact that he is in a different frame.
Image Analysis –
The use of colour is very interesting in the picture because it shows loads of different
meanings, by having the bright coloured houses can show that the little kid is
enjoying himself. But by having the red hands on the walls can show loads of
different things because red can mean loads of different things, the red hands could
indicate danger which may be the reason on why the kid is running. Natural lighting
would have been used in this picture because the light is coming from the front of
the kid; it makes sure that the kid is lit up from the front side of him. The natural
lighting within the picture makes sure that you can see the detailed parts of the
picture, it lights everything up which needs lighting up. Steve McCurry would have

had to take this picture at the right moment because he would of needed the light to
be in the right position so that the light lights everything that is needed to be lighten.
Meaning –
The main meaning for this picture is that the little kid is running away from
something. The colour within the picture can tell loads of different stories because
by having the bright colours in it make sure that the picture is telling a story that the
little kid is enjoying himself but by having the red hands on the wall can make the
story change due to the fact that the red hands could indicate danger and that he is
running away from it. This is because the hands are leading straight towards the little
kid.
Steve McCurry – Picture Two
Purpose –
The main purpose of this image is to make money from it,
which actually happened due to the fact that this picture
blew up, the picture was seen in loads of newspapers etc.
The other purpose of this image is to show people that
young children around the world are suffering. This picture
was called ‘the First World’s Third World Mona Lisa’ because
people say that its been likened to look like it. The purpose
of this picture is to show the hardship of the way she is living
in a refugee located in Pakistan.
Composition & framing –
The main focus of this picture is the face of the young girl;
the picture makes sure people see a suffering girl. As you
can see in the rule of thirds the girls face is mainly inside the
middle frame this means that the main focus of the picture
will be her face. The eyes within the picture stand out
because it’s the punctum, which means that the eyes make
the picture special and interesting. Normally red and green
doesn’t go together but we see that Steve McCurry has
made it look nice, Steve McCurry made sure that red and
green go together in this picture. This only works because
the green is a darker colour to the red of her clothes. The
picture has been composed in a way which you can see the
eyes in the middle frame because they are the main focus in
the portrait.

Image Analysis –
The use of colour within the picture is very important because usually green and red
doesn’t go together but in this picture we see that Steve McCurry has made sure
that it looks good. You can see the punctum within her eyes, which makes the main
focus of the image her eyes. Within the picture you can also see that she has ripped
clothes and that she is having a bad time wherever she is living. Steve McCurry
positioned the girl in the right way to make sure that the sun is hitting her face and
lighten it up which means that the picture was taken with natural lighting. The
picture was taken in a refugee camp in Afghanistan.
Meaning –
The meaning of this picture is to show people how hard it is for some people around
the world, that they have to live in terrible conditions and try and survive. This
picture put a massive point across to the world, after the 9/11 attacks the picture got
increased interest for woman rights to help promote support for the war in
Afghanistan. This picture shows people will show people in the first world counties
on how bad it is for people around the world that are living in refugees. This picture
made a huge point around the world because it got onto many newspapers and it
got the front cover of the ‘National Geographic magazine’. Also the picture got
named ‘the most recognized photograph’.
