1. BIOLOGY MIDTERM REVIEW
Characteristics of Life
• Be able to state the characteristics of life and provide an example of each.
Organic Compounds
• Be able to discuss the properties, structures, functions, and examples of …..
lipids, carbohydrates, proteins, and nucleic acids.
• Be able to name the monomers for each of the groups of organic molecules.
• Be able to discuss the various levels of protein structure and the different bonds
that maintain the shape of a protein at each of the levels.
• Be able to discuss how the shape of a protein determines its function and be able to
name environmental conditions that can alter its structure.
The Cell
• Be able to compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
• Be able to compare and contrast plant and animal cells.
• Be able to identify the various types of structures (ex. phospholipids, cell
membrane proteins) that compose the cell membrane. Also review what the cell
membrane looks like.
• Be able to identify the functions of the organelles and how these structures work
together to help the cell perform its daily life processes.
Cell Transport
• Be able to predict how the size of gummy bears or raisins will change when put in
hypertonic, hypotonic, and isotonic solutions.
• Be able to distinguish between diffusion, osmosis, and active transport
Structure of DNA
• Be able to label a diagram of the DNA molecule. Review the base-pairing rules and
the various types of bonds within the double helix.
Photosynthesis, Cellular Respiration, and Fermentation
• Be able to identify the products and reactants of each of these
processes.
• Be able to discuss where each of these processes takes place in the cell.
