Definitions

1. Writing definitions in an accurate and concise way is often a challenge when sitting
examinations. For this reason, we re wrote the definitions from our 2nd term exam in
pairs and then shared them in class.
Self Determination:
A right that nations have to rule themselves.
Trenches:
Hole in the ground deep enough to cover a soldier. Used in WW1. They had 2 purposes: one
to protect soldiers from direct fire and two, so that soldiers could have a place to sleep.
Rhineland:
Land in the border between Germany and France, belonging to Germany. It was
demilitarised from German troops by the T of Versailles.
Wilson:
US president who created the 14 points and represented the US at Versailles. He wanted a
fair and lasting peace.
Reparations:
Money Germany had to pay after WW1 because of the damage she had caused.
League’s objectives:
● Encourage disarmament.
● Encourage trade and business between countries.
● Improve living and working conditions.
● Discourage aggression.
Treaty of Brest Litovsk:
Treaty signed between the Central Powers and Russia in 1917 because Russia wanted to
get out of the war.
Treaty of Sevres:
Treaty between the allies and Turkey. After signing it she lost land and her army was limited.
Lloyd George:
Prime minister of Great Britain, he was one of the winners of WW1 and creators of the treaty
of Versailles.
Treaty of St Germain:
Treaty that dealt with Austria. Her army was reduced, the A­H Empire was broken down into
new states such as Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
Encirclement:
Fear the Germans had of a possible attack from France and Russia together.
