Editor's Notes
Introduction:(Birds tweeting). When you hear this sound, what do you think of? Maybe you think of a bright, crisp beautiful Spring morning? Perhaps, you think of a refreshing walk out on a meadow, in your nearby state park. Unfortunately, neither of these are the correct; this sound (birds tweeting) is the sound of your company falling behind & becoming another out-of-date business. For those of you who use social media, when you hear the sound of birds tweeting, most, if not all of you think of Twitter. For those of you who don’t know, you may be asking; “What’s Twitter”? In order to state it simply: its opportunity, its social media, and it is not the future, it’s the present and its here to stay.
Now Twitter, like many other websites are a form of social media. There are many social media sites that are out there being used every day, every hour and most certainly every moment. I’m certain you have heard of some of the most popular social media sites such as; Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, YouTube and of course, Twitter. These sites do one thing above all else, and that is communicating with each other. Maybe Johnny from Indianapolis wants to tweet about how great your product was that he bought from you last week. Guess what, Johnny integrated his ‘tweets’ so that they hit all of his social media pages simultaneously. Johnny’s one post is now on 4 separate websites. Oh! Johnny also has 600 followers on Twitter, 850 friends on his Facebook, 250 Tumblr followers and 300 Instagram followers. Johnny made one post and in moments 2000 people have viewed it, in one form or another. This is what social media does! It connects users in a way we as a society never thought possible before. Social media now enables people all over the world to share any of their ideas, opinions and news. Topping all of this off, social media shares anything a user desires at such lightening fast speed, Einstein would be jealous. Here’s the best part; Johnny did this all from his smart phone while riding his daily commuter train to work.
It is great that Johnny can do this, especially since he is such a huge fan of North Western Technologies, but what if Johnny wasn’t? In social media, there is an on-going conversation & whether you like it or not, it includes North Western Technologies. What consumers are saying about you, negative or positive, they’re sharing it with their closest 1000 followers, friends and networks and without having your own social media for your company, you have no way to counteract this negative opinion. That now, in the matter of minutes, not even a hour, has spread like wild-fire across the internet. Now, its up to costly public relations to help fix your company’s reputation, when all you needed to do was participate.
Choosing to participate in the conversation is key to your company’s survival in the future. Social media gives consumers a voice they’ve never had before & it gives your company a communication tool you never thought possible. Consumers are no longer becoming disgruntled when receiving calls from a telemarketer who is being paid to ask poll questions by a company. Not when you can just tweet the poll & several of your followers will respond instantaneously. More-so, consumers want to talk to their favorite companies, they want that direct link to where you plan on taking the corporation, what new ideas you’re working on or even to express their own ideas they have, which they’ll give willingly, but more importantly, freely. All you have to do is participate.
Participation is the future. There is no fighting it. What social media can do for you is bring you back to your consumers and the forefront of the technological industry. The statistics don’t lie. In 2010 it was reported by the Neilson Company that; “Social media users worldwide grew nearly 30 percent in 2010, from 244 million to nearly 315 million users” (Social Media’s Influence). Obviously, this is where your consumers are, in their social media cocoons. CBS News reported that “Over 70% of social network users shop online” (Dave Johnson). These are your consumers! They’re reading reviews, tweeting opinions and making up their minds in a matter of moments all online. On the same note the BBC reported that; “Companies that adopt social technologies can see a 50% increase in customer satisfaction, 48% increase in business leads and 24% increase in revenue” (Marc Benioff). Finally, a recent article in Forbes online magazine states; “85% of all businesses that have a dedicated social media platform as part of their marketing strategy reported an increase in their market exposure” (Jessica Bosari). The future and opportunity are here. Social media has made them best friends & they’re knocking on your door. The only question you have left is; are you ready to answer it?
