Substance Abuse In Prison
In the United States, the rise in both illicit drug and alcohol abuse is continuing at an alarming rate. In 2009 alone, the United States saw 23.5 million
people over the age of 12 needing treatment for drug or alcohol abuse (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2011). Per the Drug Enforcement
Administration, in the same year (2009), almost 32,000 arrests on drug related charges were carried out (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2015).
Even with the threat of prison time, and most federal prisons being filled with inmates on drug and alcohol related charges, 46.4% in 2016 the use and
abuse of these substances is still on the rise (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2016). Because of this, and the seemingly ineffective incarceration system, the

Personal Narrative: How I Get To The United States
I never understood how I got to the United States. I decided to uncover my past and ask my parents,my father; Jae Cho at the age of 60, and my
mother; Eunwoo Cho at 53. My parents met at a bar in Seoul during high school. From there they knew they had a special connection. After a year, my
.father moved to tennessee because all of his friends were there. His days consisted of struggling in high school trying to learn english, and skating
every other second he had. After years of agonizing training, he qualified for the 1984 winter olympics. After his skating career, he went to the
University of Wisconsin. My mom was still in korea at the time, starting her acting career. She acted in indie films but eventually got recognition and

How Did The Olympics And It's Impact On America
The 1992 Olympics was a huge impact on America and the Olympics games. The Dream Team was a success on proving what a genuine team was.
People had concerns that pro basketball shouldn't be played in the Olympics. Originally amateurs against other college teams played basketballs in
the Olympics. FIBA allowed professional to play in the Olympics outside the U.S. America was unsure for professionals to play. The Olympic team
lost in the Seoul games in1998 and brought home the bronze medal. The NBA wanted to win the Gold medal. It was a priority for the NBA and the
United States. The best players would be put together to come home with the Gold medal. This was a marketing dream to have the absolute best
basketball players working together at the Olympics. On April 7th 1989 was official that professionals would play on the Olympic basketball team.

Some of the players had hesitation to be apart of the Olympic history. Some of the players were excited while some had to think about if they
really wanted this. Michael Jordon, 6'6" Guard, played ninety day of golf in the summer. Jordon originally did not want to be apart of the
Olympic team. He then later was convinced to play since he was one of the best players and this game is bigger than the NBA finals. He had
concerns since we absolutely wanted to play with the best players around. Magic Johnson, 6'9" Guard, automatically said yes. He wanted to be
apart of the Olympics. He was one of the players to say yes first hoping that the other players would follow his lead. Larry Bird, 6'9" Forward, felt it
was very important that Magic was on the team. He felt this would be a great ending for both of their

Violence : The Cycle Of Violence And Gun Control
On December 14, 2012, a 20–year–old white male named Adam Lanza armed with a Bushmaster 223 assault rifle and a Glock 10mm handgun
entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He proceeded to kill 20 children, 7 adults and then took his own life. Similar
horrific acts of violence and mass shooting have become the norm in today's society. The moment one occurs it becomes the only topic of discussion
in the news and in politics. Followed by political rhetoric on gun control with no tangible results. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC),
"in 2014 11,008 persons died from firearm homicides" (CDC, n.d.). Homicide are a small figure in the overall estimated amount of violent crimes
committed with firearms. The constant bombardment of inflammatory news and ineffective regulations contribute to the continues cycle of violence
and increases sales of firearms. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Notes that, "In 2015, an estimated 1,197,704 violent crimes occurred
nationwide, an increase of 3.9 percent from the 2014 estimate." (FBI, 2015). As long as criminals have access to firearms citizens will always have a
reason to arm themselves.
The initial reaction of victims during violent acts is to call 911 and wait for assistance to arrive. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notes
that in active shooter events, "64 cases where the duration could be ascertained, 44 (69 percent) ended in less than five minutes with 23 ending in two

Michael Phelps Research Paper
Perhaps the single–greatest Olympian to have ever competed, regardless of athletic discipline or the era of competition, Michael Phelps is a
modern–day legend amongst ordinary mankind. Attending the last five Olympic Games, he has swam at the international level for well over twenty
years; his towering figure easily inciting fear within his equally seasoned competitors. A national figure at the age of nineteen, Phelps has accrued a
vast amount of success, to the point where he has even started his own line of swimming gear – sort of like Michael Jordan. And while his story of
immense feats hasn't always been one of a clean, linear path to success, he has certainly proven that it's possible to come back from the brink of
collapse. When Michael Phelps attended his first Olympics ever, hosted in Sydney, Australia, he walked away with resoundingly zero medals in his
hands. Indeed, he had completely failed to make the podium a single time... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
That's when his tumultuous life in 2004 comes into play, when he was only nineteen years old. Phelps was found driving while under the influence
of alcohol in Maryland, which led to an eighteen month probation. That wouldn't be quite so bad if five years later, he was pasted all over the front
of tabloids; not for his swimming acumen, but instead due to a photo of him smoking marijuana at a University of South Carolina party. Not the worst
act ever committed, but his sponsors over at Kellogg didn't particularly appreciate the photo. He was subsequently cut from the supplier of boxed
sugars and carbohydrates, and given a three month. Following this, in 2014, Michael Phelps was yet again found driving under the influence, and was
barred from the World Championships the subsequent year. Due to his absence, his teammates were unable to qualify for several top–tier swimming

The Olympic Event Is Not An Exemption Because
Introduction
Legadec 2007 argues that the universe had entered a totally new era of extreme events accompanied by risks risk of their own kind. The globalization
process has greatly contributed a lot to the risk–changing environment that is growth in technology, environmental, economic and social culture. These
factors are facilitated by urbanization, the increase in the interdependence and the technological innovations
However, the Olympic event can be theorized as one of the magnets that greatly amplifiers both the operational and organizational risks. The Olympic
event does generate its own unique set of risks and at the same time in also boosts the consequences and the probability of threats and hazards. For

Internal risks
The scope and scale of the modern Olympic is one of the direct sources of the internal risk which is likely to be encountered by the host government
(Brazil) and the city (Rio de Janeiro) during the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games at the national level. The level of the total amount of resources
required to comfortably stage the Olympic Games has greatly been increased by the consistent increment of the number of events, officials,
participants and the media viewers. Currently the 20016 Olympic budgets are estimated to be around $33 billion. The economic risks that face both
the international organizing committee and the host city (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have been increased by the increase in scale of Olympic movement.
The gradual increase in cost and revenue over the years has resulted to potential losses increasing proportionally to the potential gains (D 'agati, 2013).
Majority of the host governments at the recent Olympics have typically underwritten the cost of policing, infrastructure and other public services,
while on the other hand they try to offset operational costs against the commercial revenue. The 2016 Olympics is not exception to this kind of risk
because of the desire to secure the Olympic bid. Therefore, the relationship of direct scale to risk is significantly represent in the in the operational and
organizational risk for both the Brazil 2016 organizing committee of the Olympic Games

January 15, 2017 Intellectual Disabilities in the 60's
Disabilities were viewed in many different ways by different societies and even differently by different families within a society. After WWII the
view of different types of people changed. Views on people with disabilities changed because of the number of veterans who returned with physical
and mental disabilities and because the number of people with disabilities who were employed for the first time in the war effort. Another reason that
people with disabilities were viewed differently was because President Roosevelt was unable to walk because of polio. President Kennedy had a sister
that had an intellectual disability. So people began to view people with disabilities differently. My family also viewed disabilities differently than most
families. My brother, Sammy, who was born in 1955 had Down's syndrome. My grandmother had a sister named "Bam" that had an intellectual

but the process of body identification was too long; numerous families and relatives of victims have gone through profound distress due to the lack of

It is a fact that boxing was one of the most favorite and preferred sports among the people of United States and they used to encourage boxers, so
that they can perform with more enthusiasm and zeal. Gradually, people of America had taken a step back and diverted their choices towards other
sports or games. In this regard, Bernick and Banks (2013) have proposed an idea that large number of factors was involved in this act. The rest of paper
gives in–depth and accurate factors or causes, which were involved in the decline of American boxing industry.
Diminishing of Heavyweight Division
According to Silverman (2012), one of the major causes or factors, which were involved in the declining trends of boxing in America, is diminishing
use of heavyweight division. It has been examined that one of the major aspects, which caused people of America to get engage in other sports is the
stoppage of heavyweight division in boxing. This idea was supported by Bernick and Banks (2013), according to which, the citizens of America loved
to experience knockouts, which were quite impossible without heavyweight divisions. With the passage of time, they lost their interest from boxing
and found other interesting and eye catching sports, like football, cricket, hockey, etc. It is a fact that Ray Robinson was a middleweight, during his

Olympic Games Pros And Cons
Hosting the Olympic Games is a massive risk that cities all around the world are willing to take. While many people assume that hosting the Games is
a way out a debt, it can also be just the opposite. There are many factors that contribute to the overall success and failure of hosting the Olympics. For
one, the results differ between cities. Cities within countries that are more economically stable seem to profit from hosting more than cities in countries
that are less developed and economically stable. Hosting the Summer versus Winter Games can also impact the end results. In general, the Summer
Olympics tend to make a more significant impact, as they are more popular among viewers (Dick and Wang). Regardless, both the Summer and Winter
Olympics unquestionably have both positive and negative impacts on the community and the citizens of its host city. While hosting theOlympic Games
in U.S. cities has both pros and cons, in the end, the pros drastically outweigh the cons.
Through the twenty–eight Summer Games and the twenty–three Winter Games, numerous cities have prospered from welcoming the Olympics.

He thought of old childhood games, such as duck on a rock. The goal was to throw a stone at the "duck" (rock) and try to knock it over first. Then,
he got an idea. At this point, there were only two days left to finish making up this sport, so he didn't have enough time to come up with new
equipment. He needed a goal and a ball. For the goal, he decided to use a peach basket. At that time, he just decided to use a soccer ball to throw in
the peach baskets. He set up the peach baskets and explained the rules. Soon, the gym was full of people watching, and playing. Everyone was
having a great time. Basketball was invented on December 21, 1891, when James was at the age of thirty. Then, teams started forming around town.
Women started playing. Then, it started to become a popular sport throughout America. A few years after, basketball started evolving. The baskets

The Olympic Games Of The United States Essay
In 1896, the Olympic Games were officially reborn into the modern era thanks to a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin (Lewis, 1992). In
1904, the Games of the III Olympiad arrived in the United States, marking itself as the first Olympics to be held in said country as well as the first
hosted outside of Europe. Often forgotten, this specific Olympics also signifies the beginning of the horrible luck Chicago, Illinois, has had regarding
the hosting rights. With four losses under its belt and a history of bad news, Chicago is frequently told–to no one's surprise–that it should simply give
up on its dream and focus on improving itself. However, who's to say that the Jewel of the Midwest can't do both? By incorporating a
well–thought–out narrative of what the city has gone through into their appeal process, Chicago could very well win the bid next time
around–whenever that might be. The city boasts an efficiently compact setting; a history and love of sports that entices amiable relations between
residents; and an enthralling tale to tell. Overall, Chicago can use its need for a strong community to reach the top of the podium in the rigorous battle
for host city status. A point often overlooked, the city technically won the hosting rights once.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the city the right to host the third Olympics in 1904. Be that as it may, those games did not take
place in Chicago as planned. Instead, Saint Louis, Missouri, captured the rights

Economic Benefits Of Hostinging The Olympic Games
There is also question as to how much benefit is actually derived from hosting the Olympics. According to a study conducted by Chengli Tien of
National Taiwan Normal University, Huai–Chun Lo of Yuan Ze University, and Hsiou
–Wei Lin of National Taiwan University, the economic impact of
hosting the Olympic Games is only on a short–term basis. The study concludes that GDP only rises by an average around 2% in the years leading up
to the Olympics, with very minimal effect during or after the Olympics. The unemployment of host cities decreases by a meager 0.3% annually. David
Forrest, an economist and professor at the University of Liverpool, has spoken against hosting the Olympics, saying "There is an absolute consensus
among sports economists that it is economically damaging to host the Games, unless one puts a very high value on the local population enjoying the
party. The only publications attributing benefits to hosting are by consultancies paid by politicians to validate their vanity projects."
I had the chance to talk with a close family friend who lived in Lake Placid growing up and was a resident of the town when they hosted the 1980
Winter Olympics. According to Tom Irvin, he and the rest of Lake Placid were ecstatic about hosting the games. Not only did it bring attention to the

in China, which marks sovereignty and power of the country in a global view. Therefore, when the long time expectation is about to become real, the
primary goal for Chinese government and citizens is to show the best part of China to the world. This paper focuses on what and how the Chinese

Benefits of Weightlifting Essay
Many people look for an activity that will better them in every way possible; weightlifting is the greatest activity in the world for such goals!
Weightlifting yields so many benefits and it can improve the quality of life for anyone who can do it. Weightlifting is one of the activities that, in
conjunction with other exercise and proper diet, will improve overall health, physical performance, and mentality. First and foremost, the health benefits
that come from weightlifting are numerous and immense. Weightlifting increases muscle strength and it increases bone density as well. Increase in

Hope lies on the horizon for fat and obese people as well! Contrary to popular belief, Weightlifting can help people with losing weight and trimming
down excess fat tissue. A study conducted by researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine demonstrated that weightlifting, or any weight
or load–bearing exercise, can help increase metabolism and, in turn, reduce body fat percentage ("'Weight Training'"). The researchers genetically
modified the mice to grow their type 2 muscle fibers and bulk them up; with this addition of muscle, the mice showed various signs of metabolic
improvements throughout the body – such as fat reduction ("'Weight Training'"). The same science can be applied to human beings. Weightlifting
works and develops fast twitch (type 2) muscle fibers; a good amount of muscle on the body will help with fat reduction by increasing the speed of
the metabolism. A study conducted by the Journal of Applied Physiology supports this data as well; after a 16 week strength training, 13 men aged
50–65 years showed increases in resting metabolic rate, decrease in body fat percentage with no change in weight, and an increase in strength
(Pratley). Since bigger and stronger muscles help burn fat then obviously it can help those struggling with obesity and all of the

Performance Of Sports And Performance Enhancing Drugs
Performance Enhancers in Elite Sports Performance enhancing drugs are as old as sports themselves. Even the ancient athlete that competed in some
of the first Olympic Games were know to use substances to boost their performance. It is on record that "Olympian Thomas Hicks won the marathon
after receiving an injection of strychnine during the race in the third Olympiad". (Savulescu, 1) It wasn't until the 70's that athletes began being tested
for performance enhancing drugs and they became banned. Even then college athletes weren't tested. Only a select few Olympians and professional
athletes were tested. The International Amateur Athletic Federation projects that only 10%–15% of athletes are tested at all in major competition.
(Savulescu, 5) Part of this was due to the fact that the technology to test for these substances was relatively new and unavailable. But the main reason
performance enhancing drugs are illegal for athletic use is because they are seen as an unfair advantage for the athletes that use them and of course
because of the health risks involved with using some of these drugs in dose that wouldn't be prescribed by a physician. These reasons are either untrue
or can be eliminated with their legalization. Either way, performance enhancing drugs should be allowed at the elite levels of competition such as
profession sports and the Olympics. The best way for our government has found to control a substance and make it safer is through legalization and
regulation.

I. (Gain attention and interest) I remember joining the high school swim team back in my sophomore year. I remember struggling to catch a breath in

In 1873, this hybrid stroke became known as the Trudgen stroke.
4.Trudgen effectively changed England's swimming styles from endurance based to more speed based. iv. Another swimming pioneer, Fredrick Cavill ,
helped further develop Trudgen's stroke into an even faster stroke known as the front crawl (livestrong.com).
1.He was an Englishman and a notable swimmer who emigrated to Australia.
2.Like Arthur Trudgen, Cavill observed the natives of the Solomon Islands and found that Trudgen's stroke would have been significantly faster if he
would have incorporated the native's kicking action.
3.Cavill refined the native's stroke and taught it to his sons, one of which would later use the stroke in a competition in England.
4.Since England was still using the Trudgen stoke, Cavill's son Richard, destroyed his competition with the more efficient stroke, which he described
as, "crawling through the water" (usaswimming.org). Hence, the name front crawl.

The Olympics of 1936 were a very important part of the Nazi takeover. They used the event to display their power and the superiority of the Aryan race.
The Nazis tried to say everything was fair about it and all were welcome, but that was not the way it really was. This was only the beginning of the

The War Of The Cold War
Feelings Do Matter
At the close of World War Two in 1945, the United States entered another kind of war, the Cold War, which did not involve two adversaries in open
battle fields using bullets against the Soviet Union. Throughout the Cold War, incidents fueled feelings of anxiety, mistrust and pride.
Often pride is defined as "a feeling that you are more important or better than other people" (Pride). Mistrust on the other hand is the "feeling that
someone is not honest and cannot be trusted", which still holds true to this day in regards to American and Russian relations (Mistrust). A meaning of
anxiety is the "fear or nervousness about what might happen" (Anxiety). This feeling was definitely present during the Cold War.
In fact, much anxiety existed during the Cold War, in part due to American fear that the Soviet Union would use Nuclear weapons against them. The
Soviets shared a similar feeling that nuclear weapons would be used against them. Due to this mutual fear, missiles placed within range of American
soil would create a crisis.
As a result, when it was discovered the Soviet Union was building a missile inventory on the island of Cuba, the Cuban Missile Crisis unfolded October
16 to 28, 1962. In response to this discovery, "the United States took forceful military steps for a potential invasion of Cuba" by staging troops off the

The Battle Against Our Anatomy Essay
Throughout the years women have fought for many things to make themselves equal to men, including one controversial topic. Athletic sports. There
have been many battles, especially with the Olympics and allowing women to participate in male dominated sports. However, there were reasons for
the hesitation. A woman's bodies vs. a man's body are very much different with different builds, especially with builds proving it difficult for some
women. One event that took women a long time to finally compete at Olympics for was ski jumping due to the concerns about the injuries that only

ACL just by jumping, because when women land they land with their bodies more upright. Plus injury rates of the ACL maybe linked to hormones and
the women's menstrual cycle.
Women unlike men have weaker upper torsos and prone to shoulder injuries especially those that swim, play softball, or volleyball. The doctor

However, within a study Gender difference in sport injuries separating the risk and types of the injuries within cross–country skiers, swimmers,

Substance Abuse In Prison

  • 1. Substance Abuse In Prison In the United States, the rise in both illicit drug and alcohol abuse is continuing at an alarming rate. In 2009 alone, the United States saw 23.5 million people over the age of 12 needing treatment for drug or alcohol abuse (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2011). Per the Drug Enforcement Administration, in the same year (2009), almost 32,000 arrests on drug related charges were carried out (Drug Enforcement Administration, 2015). Even with the threat of prison time, and most federal prisons being filled with inmates on drug and alcohol related charges, 46.4% in 2016 the use and abuse of these substances is still on the rise (Federal Bureau of Prisons, 2016). Because of this, and the seemingly ineffective incarceration system, the call for... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She is in pursuit of her B.S in Human Service. People had concerns that pro basketball shouldn't be played in the Olympics. Originally amateurs against other college teams played basketballs in the Olympics. FIBA allowed professional to play in the Olympics outside the U.S. America was unsure for professionals to play. The Olympic team lost in the Seoul games in1998 and brought home the bronze medal. The NBA wanted to win the Gold medal. It was a priority for the NBA and the United States. The best players would be put together to come home with the Gold medal. Violence : The Cycle Of Violence And Gun Control On December 14, 2012, a 20–year–old white male named Adam Lanza armed with a Bushmaster 223 assault rifle and a Glock 10mm handgun entered the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. He proceeded to kill 20 children, 7 adults and then took his own life. Similar horrific acts of violence and mass shooting have become the norm in today's society. The moment one occurs it becomes the only topic of discussion in the news and in politics. Followed by political rhetoric on gun control with no tangible results. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), "in 2014 11,008 persons died from firearm homicides" (CDC, n.d.). Homicide are a small figure in the overall estimated amount of violent crimes committed with firearms. The constant bombardment of inflammatory news and ineffective regulations contribute to the continues cycle of violence and increases sales of firearms. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Notes that, "In 2015, an estimated 1,197,704 violent crimes occurred nationwide, an increase of 3.9 percent from the 2014 estimate." (FBI, 2015). As long as criminals have access to firearms citizens will always have a reason to arm themselves. The initial reaction of victims during violent acts is to call 911 and wait for assistance to arrive. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) notes that in active shooter events, "64 cases where the duration could be ascertained, 44 (69 percent) ended in less than five minutes with 23 ending in two minutes or ... Michael Phelps Research Paper Perhaps the single–greatest Olympian to have ever competed, regardless of athletic discipline or the era of competition, Michael Phelps is a modern–day legend amongst ordinary mankind. Attending the last five Olympic Games, he has swam at the international level for well over twenty years; his towering figure easily inciting fear within his equally seasoned competitors. A national figure at the age of nineteen, Phelps has accrued a vast amount of success, to the point where he has even started his own line of swimming gear – sort of like Michael Jordan. And while his story of immense feats hasn't always been one of a clean, linear path to success, he has certainly proven that it's possible to come back from the brink of collapse. When Michael Phelps attended his first Olympics ever, hosted in Sydney, Australia, he walked away with resoundingly zero medals in his hands. Not the worst act ever committed, but his sponsors over at Kellogg didn't particularly appreciate the photo. He was subsequently cut from the supplier of boxed sugars and carbohydrates, and given a three month. The globalization process has greatly contributed a lot to the risk–changing environment that is growth in technology, environmental, economic and social culture. These factors are facilitated by urbanization, the increase in the interdependence and the technological innovations However, the Olympic event can be theorized as one of the magnets that greatly amplifiers both the operational and organizational risks. Internal risks The scope and scale of the modern Olympic is one of the direct sources of the internal risk which is likely to be encountered by the host government (Brazil) and the city (Rio de Janeiro) during the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games at the national level. The level of the total amount of resources required to comfortably stage the Olympic Games has greatly been increased by the consistent increment of the number of events, officials, participants and the media viewers. Currently the 20016 Olympic budgets are estimated to be around $33 billion. The economic risks that face both the international organizing committee and the host city (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have been increased by the increase in scale of Olympic movement. The gradual increase in cost and revenue over the years has resulted to potential losses increasing proportionally to the potential gains (D 'agati, 2013). Majority of the host governments at the recent Olympics have typically underwritten the cost of policing, infrastructure and other public services, while on the other hand they try to offset operational costs against the commercial revenue. The 2016 Olympics is not exception to this kind of risk because of the desire to secure the Olympic bid. Intellectual Disabilities In The 60's Analysis Intellectual Disabilities in the 60's Constance de Leon Touro University Concept Analysis Behaviorism CTAV –602D Briel Josephson January 15, 2017 Intellectual Disabilities in the 60's Disabilities were viewed in many different ways by different societies and even differently by different families within a society. After WWII the view of different types of people changed. Views on people with disabilities changed because of the number of veterans who returned with physical and mental disabilities and because the number of people with disabilities who were employed for the first time in the war effort. Another reason that people with disabilities were viewed differently was because President Roosevelt was unable to walk because of polio. President Kennedy had a sister that had an intellectual disability. So people began to view people with disabilities differently. My family also viewed disabilities differently than most families. In 1904, the Games of the III Olympiad arrived in the United States, marking itself as the first Olympics to be held in said country as well as the first hosted outside of Europe. Often forgotten, this specific Olympics also signifies the beginning of the horrible luck Chicago, Illinois, has had regarding the hosting rights. With four losses under its belt and a history of bad news, Chicago is frequently told–to no one's surprise–that it should simply give up on its dream and focus on improving itself. However, who's to say that the Jewel of the Midwest can't do both? By incorporating a well–thought–out narrative of what the city has gone through into their appeal process, Chicago could very well win the bid next time around–whenever that might be. The city boasts an efficiently compact setting; a history and love of sports that entices amiable relations between residents; and an enthralling tale to tell. Overall, Chicago can use its need for a strong community to reach the top of the podium in the rigorous battle for host city status. A point often overlooked, the city technically won the hosting rights once. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the city the right to host the third Olympics in 1904. Even the ancient athlete that competed in some of the first Olympic Games were know to use substances to boost their performance. It is on record that "Olympian Thomas Hicks won the marathon after receiving an injection of strychnine during the race in the third Olympiad". (Savulescu, 1) It wasn't until the 70's that athletes began being tested for performance enhancing drugs and they became banned. Even then college athletes weren't tested. Only a select few Olympians and professional athletes were tested. The International Amateur Athletic Federation projects that only 10%–15% of athletes are tested at all in major competition. (Savulescu, 5) Part of this was due to the fact that the technology to test for these substances was relatively new and unavailable. But the main reason performance enhancing drugs are illegal for athletic use is because they are seen as an unfair advantage for the athletes that use them and of course because of the health risks involved with using some of these drugs in dose that wouldn't be prescribed by a physician. These reasons are either untrue or can be eliminated with their legalization. Either way, performance enhancing drugs should be allowed at the elite levels of competition such as profession sports and the Olympics.
