Legal protection given to creator (artist, writer, musician, etc).
Promotes creativity because creators know their work is protected
and they control its use.
Creators have the right to sue if someone violates copyright.

Allows for limited use of copyrighted material WITHOUT getting
permission, BUT STILL GIVE CREDIT!
What matters:
• Use: educational, parody, commentary, news reporting all OK
• Amount: How much is being used?
• Effect on original work’s value: will creator lose $$?
9. PUBLIC DOMAIN IS…
Works that have expired copyrights; can be used by anyone in
their entirety. Almost all works published before 1923.
Examples:
Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Garden, Little Brother
