COPYRIGHT?

2. COPYRIGHT IS…
Legal protection given to creator (artist, writer, musician, etc).
Promotes creativity because creators know their work is protected
and they control its use.
Creators have the right to sue if someone violates copyright.
Examples: Coldplay, Zumba fitness, Happy Birthday (update!),
Wizard of Oz

3. COPYRIGHT…
Exists automatically as soon as something is created and is good
for the life of the creator + 70 years
Ideas can’t be copyrighted!

4. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?
Use copyright free materials! Ex: photos for a project
Ask permission before using copyrighted materials.
Always give credit to the original author!!
When in doubt, don’t use copyrighted materials

7. A CREATIVE COMMONS EXAMPLE:
My friend Sonya posted this picture on Flickr and gave it a license of
Since then her picture has been used multiple times in
blogs, newspaper articles, etc. No one has to contact her
for permission or pay her money because her permission
is part of the creative commons license. All they have to
do is give her credit.

8. FAIR USE IS…
Allows for limited use of copyrighted material WITHOUT getting
permission, BUT STILL GIVE CREDIT!
What matters:
• Use: educational, parody, commentary, news reporting all OK
• Amount: How much is being used?
• Effect on original work’s value: will creator lose $$?

9. PUBLIC DOMAIN IS…
Works that have expired copyrights; can be used by anyone in
their entirety. Almost all works published before 1923.
Examples:
Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Garden, Little Brother
