6. Tell me again what copyright is??
Copyright is a protection that the creator of something
new has. It protects their work from being used
without the permission of the creator.
It protects works of art like
music, paintings, photos, video, writings, or anything
else that you can create!
Just because you can find and get a work
does not give you the right to use it.
7. Class Survey Time!
Have any of you ever found a picture on the internet and
made it your desktop picture because you liked it?
survey has been taken.
If that wasn’t a picture that you took or didn’t get permission
from the person that did take it you have broken the law.
8. It seems so easy to get Copyrighted
material, it can’t be wrong.
Unfortunately this is what a lot of people think. The internet
and Peer to Peer file sharing networks like Limewire have
made getting copyrighted material like songs, pictures, and
video so easy and even easier to get away with. And because
it seems like everyone is doing it, there must not be anything
wrong with it.
It is also wrong to take word for word writing directly from
another source like a book or an online database. If you try
to turn this work in as your own it is called plagiarism and it
also is against the law. You are both cheating and stealing
when you do this.
9. Is there any way I can use something
that someone created without getting in
trouble?
Yes, there is a defense called Fair Use that protects my usage
of copyrighted material as long as I don’t violate certain
restrictions.
I am not trying to make money off of the copyright material.
I am not using so much of the material that I am hurting the
copyrighted material’s sales.
I have a good reason why I am using the copyrighted
material.
10. For Example…
If I was in a classroom and we were talking good and bad
qualities of a movie. Both 101 Dalmatians and Robin Hood
have stealing in them but in one of these movies the one we
consider the hero is doing the stealing. Lets consider the
reasons we are doing that after watching these clips.
Because of Fair Use I could show the following Disney clips
from 101 Dalmatians and Robin Hood. I am not trying to
make money, I am using it in an educational setting to discuss
two characters and I am not showing so much of the videos
that I am hurting the sales of the videos.
11. What if I change the original work?
Whenever you are working with material that is not originally
yours even if you are changing it, (such as in a mash-up) if
you do this outside of the bounds of fair use and outside of
the creators permission then you are breaking the law.
It is always best to get the original authors permission or at
least make a good faith effort to obtain the authors
permission. Always give credit for the original work.
