2. CONVENTIONS -
DEFINITION
Conventions
Plural noun
The ‘rules’ that are generally understood and accepted when producing a
media text in a particular genre. For example, the conventions of a soap
opera include the setting in a small community of place of work, the fact
that there is generally one episode broadcast per day, of ten with an
omnibus at the weekend, the cliff-hanger ending to encourage the
audience to watch again tomorrow, and many more.
3. CONVENTIONS
The main conventions of a magazine are:
Masthead
Tagline
Colour scheme
Font
Photography
Cover lines
Pulling quotes
Writing style
Different genres have different ways of presenting their conventions. I had to combine two genres for my
magazine, and they were rock and grunge, so I had to take into account two different house styles.
4. COMPARING TWO GENRES
One way I compared two genres was analyzing them together, for
this I picked NME (Rock) and CLASH (Grunge).
5. The next three slides will show comparisons of my magazine to
NME and CLASH. On the left is NME, mine is the middle, and
CLASH is on the right.
