2. Fundamental Problem
Since the future scenario affects the law of Singapore where the elderly
will be more likely to repeatedly commit crimes due to the lighter
sentence, working hours to pay those taxes regarding the new
scheme, how might we minimise the possibility of elderly crime
offenders so that there would be a smaller percentage of convicts by
the end of the year 2065?
3. Potential Solution 1
Community Centres will organise regular activities to
create opportunities for the citizens to bond and to reach
out to the citizens. When citizens come together and talk,
they get to know one another better. They will also realise
the importance of social interaction, hence, they will think
less of committing crimes.
We will organise such activities...
5. Research and Rationale
According to the People’s Association website, there are already
programmes catered for the elderly.
The PA Wellness Programme offers those aged 50 and above
opportunities to take part in activities to help them remain
mentally, physically and socially active.
There is also PA Senior Citizens’ Executive Committees (SCECs)
is the largest seniors’ network in Singapore. Through this
network, the SCEC plans and organises a wide array of activities
and courses to enrich the life experiences of senior citizens.
6. Potential Solution 2
Town councils will organise talks and exhibits for the
elderly to improve their awareness of the surroundings.
Through motivational talks and exhibits such as these, the
elderly in Singapore will understand more about crimes in
Singapore and how they might be made use of. These talks
will hopefully teach the elderly to make a decision for
themselves and not to be made use of.
8. Research and Rationale
PA Senior Citizens’ Executive Committees (SCECs) plan and organise
activities and courses to enrich the life experiences of senior citizens.
There are sports and dance activities that are specially designed to help
participants stay fit and healthy. There are also courses that fulfill the
pursuit of lifelong learning by offering skills to pick up a new language,
improve one's cooking, and even explore the possibilities of computer
technology. It aims to engage and empower seniors to lead active,
healthy and meaningful lives in the community.
9. Potential Solution 3...
The Ministry of Social and Family Development will be
establishing a hotline that the elderly can call in to talk about
their troubles. The hotline will be run by social workers to reach
out to the elderly. All cases will be made confidential, but should
the need arise, volunteers could be dispatched to assist the
elderly in some special cases. The elderly will thus know a direct
number to contact for a listening ear when they need help and
will have a lesser chance of committing a crime.
11. Research and Rationale
According to the list of helplines provided by the National Council of Social
Service, there is a seniors helpline that provides tele-counselling and
information on the availability of community resources for anyone aged 50
years and above and their caregivers. The Seniors Helpline also provides tele-
befriending services for lonely elderly who need someone to talk to.It is
manned by trained volunteers who are supervised by professional staff. Most
volunteers are bilingual and speak at least one dialect. The helpline service
provides a listening ear for anyone who wishes to talk about matters concerning
older persons. It also offers information and referral assistance to community
services for the elderly and their caregivers.
12. Potential Solution 4
The Directors of The Restrain Bracelet Foundation will be providing the
elderly with restrain bracelets. Elderly above the age of 65 will receive
this restraining bracelet. There will also be a manual that explains to
them clearly how this works. This Restraining bracelet can sense when
one is about to do no good. Upon sensing the danger, it will
immediately vibrate and emit a blinking light to warn the user not to
commit the crime. The bracelet can also send a distress signal when the
user is being robbed. This will help decrease the crime rate of the
elderly.
14. Research and Rationale
According to The Young Scientists magazine, there is already a similar
product on the market but it has a different purpose.
Aria is a bracelet device created by May Wilson which helps those with
impared hearing to overcome their problem.Whenever the phone rings
or someone presses the doorbell, the bangle will alert the wearer by
vibrating and emitting a blinking light to indicate the above.
15. Potential Solution 5
The government will be studying the mindsets of elderly criminals.
The elderly will be given occasional group therapy sessions where they
can voice out their troubles to the medical experts. The experts will also
ask them a few questions which can be tabulated to see if the elderly
has a motive to commit a crime. By using this approach, the elderly will
be more relaxed and will be less intimidated.
17. Research and Rationale
About.com a pychological website has stated some advantages of having group
therapies. Here are some reasons, the group contains elderly who are facing
difficult problems in their life. Thus by sharing it with the rest, others can give
advice to them too.
The group will also be more cohesive as all of them are working towards a
common goal which is to decrease the number of crimes they make. Also, group
therapy is also more cost-effective since it serves the purpose as an entire
group.
The group members also can support and encourage one another as their face
this journey together.
