Evaluation Part 4 and 5: Audience Identification and Appeal
Representation media
1.
2. Why its useful relating
representation to my work
It is useful to relate representation into our teaser trailers as
different representations will draw in certain audiences and as our
teaser trailer is part of a marketing company we need to know
what audiences will be interested in our movie campaign and
using representation can show clearly what type of audiences we
need to entice and market towards.
3. Introducing Dyers typography
Richard Dyers typography is a series of four questions in which you can apply to a film
or teaser trailer to help you find out what is being represented and the four questions
are:
1. What is represented? What information, through the use of media language, does
the text give you about the characters, subject matter or place.
2. How is this representative of social groups? What does the text suggest is typical?
Consider what it says about particular social groups by looking at stereotypes if so
why are they there, is it positive or negative, does it reinforce or challenge the
dominant ideology?
3. Who is responsible for the representation? Consider the filmmakers and the
institutions responsible for productions. What agenda do the producers have? Why
would they want to represent things in a certain way which could be target audience,
genre, commercial aspect or artistic expression
4. What does the audience make of it? What could the audience response be?
Consider different audiences as everyone will have different tastes.
4. Applying Richard Dyers
typography to my teaser trailer
1. What is represented? The information given in my teaser trailer suggests that there is one
central character who is being bullied by a group of other characters, the girl in the teaser trailer
seems to be his only friend but he pushes her away.
2. How is this representative of social groups? It represents bullies in a stereotypical way as they
are all wearing hoodies and sport branded clothing which is used so we can distinctly tell who
they are and shows this in a negative way as not everyone who wears a hoody and sport
branded clothing is a bully. A lot of movies associated with bullying normally show a male
character being represented as the victim like ours which is negative as it can also happen to
females and not just men.
3. Who is responsible for the representation? my group is responsible for this representation as
we chose what characters were to appear in the teaser trailer. We decided to put in the
representation of bullying as it appeals to a wide target audience and can be very relatable for a
lot of people.
4. What does the audience make of it? For people who have been affected by bullying as an
audience they can either have a preferred reading of the teaser in thinking that it is absolutely
true and bullying happens this way or maybe a negotiated reading in which people may think
some cases of that is true but other cases of bullying shown maybe a bit extreme. Some people
may even take oppositional reading and think the bullying represented is not true as there is
also cyber bullying which is not looked at in the movie.
5. Conclusion
In conclusion mainly males will be interested in watching the
movie as it is mostly male represented theory to back up my point
is the Bechdel Test which is three questions which related to
females in a movie and they are:
1. It has to have at least two women in it, who
2. talk to each other, about
3. something besides a man.
Our teaser fails this test as there is only one woman in the trailer
and is suggested she only talks to the victim who is a male and if
does speak to other females in the movie it would be about the
male victim.
