In many homes sweets and other special things are made on
festival days. Here is a recipe for Sooji halwa. Is this how you
make it in your family?
You will need:
* 1/2 cup sooji
* 2 small spoons of ghee
* 1/3 cup sugar
* 1.5 cups of water
Method
• Boil the sugar with water and make a sugar syrup.
• Heat a kadhai. Add the ghee. Fry the sooji till it is brown
• Add the sugar syrup and stir till the halwa is thick
• The halwa is ready to eat.
Which is your favourite sweet or snack? Find out how it is made and write the recipe. You can write it in
your notebook or on a separate piece of paper.
Activity – 3 :
Read the story below and complete it. You can work with a friend.
'Will you buy some firecrackers for me, for this Diwali?', said Malati, the daughter of Gadadhar, a truck
loader. Malati is 15 years old.
Gadadhar had been out of work for two months. He fractured his hand when lifting a large stone. 'Malati
beti, we cannot afford to celebrate Diwali this year. We have no money. The money that Mama brings is
just enough for our daily food.'
'1 know that. That is why I thought of taking up a job during the holidays so that we will have some money.
The maalkin of the house where Mama works needs some help with house cleaning for Diwali. She asked
me to help her. If I go, I will get some money for Diwali.'

'1 don't want you to go to work at this age Malati. We may be
poor, but we will not allow our children to work for money,'
Gadadhar replied angrily.' And don't you have to study for your
class 10 exams?'
'What is the point of studying well when we don't have any
money for me to go to a good inter-college?
'We will find the money somehow, Malati beti, to send you to
college,' said Gadadhar in a tired voice. 'Papa, let me go to
work. I will earn some money. Maybe I can continue school
after a few years. If I can work now and save some money we
can send Ramesh to college. He will be in class 10 in two years.'
How would you complete this story ? Should Malati got to work
? What would you do Gadadhar’s situation ? (Write your ending
to the story in Odia or English)

Activity – 4 :
Here is a problem for you to solve.
You are crossing the Mahanadi in a small boat. The boat can hold only seven but there are 30 people in
it, including you. None of you knows how to swim. Suddenly the boat seems to be sinking because of the
overload.
You can save only some of the people in the boat. You have to get a few people out of the boat! That
would reduce the weight of the boat and it won't sink. Those who are in the boat will be saved. There is
nothing else that can be thrown out to save the boat from sinking.
What would you do? How would you get people to leave the boat? Would you push them, request them,
etc.? Which people would remain on the boat? Would you, yourself: leave the boat? Remember, you can't
swim. Do you think you could save any people or would everyone drown with the boat?
Activity – 5 :
Here's another interesting little story.
A year ago, my brother got a job in the city. He went away, and I got his cycle. So every day, I come to
school on his nice, big, strong cycle. He took very good care of this cycle. It runs smoothly. It has a nice
bell. I can go really fast on it. But the school is so near that I am there in just 5 minutes.
That is why I love going on long rides with my friends. Last week we went to the river. It is about 10 kms
away. I really enjoyed the ride. Mama told me not to swim in the river at that spot. The water flows fast
there. It can be dangerous. We had so much fun playing cricket in a field close to the river that there was
no time to enter the water. In the evening we returned home tired but very happy.
Do you think he would have been happier with a motorcycle? What would you have done in his place?
Activity – 6 :
Read this story about whether young people should have mobile phones.
I wanted to get a mobile phone.
My father said, 'It is very expensive.'
I said, 'No, it's just Rs. I000.'
'But then you have to pay for the call charges every month. Where will
that money come from?'
My mother said, 'I don't like the idea of giving you a mobile. You will
always be on the phone, talking.'
'No, Mummy. You know I'm responsible. If I am getting late I can let you
know. Won't you feel better knowing I am safe?'

'No, I don't like the idea of you having a mobile phone.'
My younger brother said, 'If Didi has a mobile phone you have to get me one too.' 'See?'
said Mummy. 'Now you are making him also want one.'
'But she should have a mobile phone!' We turned around. It was my Dadi. 'She
should have a phone? Why Ma-ji?,' asked my mother.
'So I can talk to her whenever I want! Especially when she is away from home.'
'But how will you talk to her, Ma-ji ? We don't have a land-line, and you don't have a phone yourself.' 'That
is what I am saying. Why don't you get me a phone too!'
So what do you think, who got a phone in the end?
Activity – 7 :
Read the incident below and decide what you would do in this situation?
As you and your friend were cycling to school, your friend loses his balance. A car coming from behind hits
your friend's cycle. He falls down, you drop your cycle, run to him and you find that he is conscious but is
bleeding. The car driver has stopped the car and is willing to take your friend and you to the closest
hospital, which is 5 km away. The driver insists that you be with him till your friend is admitted to the
hospital.
You want to do that, but it is your first board exam - your English paper! You have prepared well and do
not want to miss the exam. But you have to help your friend who is injured badly, by being with him in the
hospital till his parents come. But then, you will miss your exam and perhaps will have to sit out one year.
What will you do?
Activity : 8 :
You find something that doesn't belong to you.
What would you do?
Your family is poor and so are most families in
your neighbourhood. You have always wanted
to help your own and the other families. Your
parents work very hard, but don't earn much.
One day, you are walking on the road to the
school, when you see a huge sack full of
expensive basmati rice packets falling from the
back of the truck. You try to stop the truck but

it drives away. There is no one else on the road. It is festival time and your family would love to have that
kind of rice to make biryani. You can feed the entire neighbourhood.
The rice belongs to someone else, and to take it and use it for your family would be stealing.
What would you do if:
• you have noted the truck number ?
• you have not noted the truck number but can find out some details written
on the sack ? A telephone number in Delhi is mentioned on the sack.
• You don’t know and have no way of knowing who the owner is ?
• Your younger brother is with you and tells you that you should sell it in the
local grain shop and use the money to buy some things for everyone in your
family ?
• Your sister tells you that you should share the rice with everyone in the
neighbourhood ?
