The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture
The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary
pattern of physical features in a human being 's development. These features include, but are not
limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how
humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of
alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the
environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is that
humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences.
Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and form
human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs,
clothing/foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings,
literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief
systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they have
learned from their families this begins to create a culture. Personality plays a central role in both
nature vs nurture and culture. Furthermore, personality is stated "the total organization of inherited
and acquired characteristics of an individual as evidenced by the individual 's behavior (Hunt 119).

The Song By Bruce Springsteen
I was not born in the United States; yet, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." hit from his 1984
album by the same title is still culturally and politically significant. Springsteen is one of those
artists that is still heard in modern times because of the great amount of fame he has acquired
throughout his career. The song bring some attention to the wrongdoings of the United States
government in their treatment of their veterans, especially after the Vietnam War. It raises awareness
by using a catchy melody to draw listeners in; but Springsteen fails to achieve his ultimate goal of
influencing young adults to protest against their government because the memorable words in the
chorus overshadow the plot in the verses. This makes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Springsteen's choice to involve himself in political issues, although not explicitly, was something
that was building up throughout his life as he transitioned from a young adult to an adult in his mid–
thirties. As explained by New York Times writer Nicholas Dawidoff in an article from 1997 titled
"The Pop Populist", Springsteen's main concerns were not that of chasing young woman, but that of
needing to change the world around him (Dawidoff). By the time Springsteen wrote "Born in the
U.S.A.", he had already built a good reputation for himself in the United States. This makes it
possible for Springsteen to influence large crowds of people to take action or, at the very least, listen
to what he has to say. Ronald Reagan used this song to praise American values. The irony of this is
that the song is doing the exact opposite of praising the United States for their role in the Vietnam
War and their treatment of their veterans. In an article titled "Bruce Springsteen, Ronald Reagan and
the American Dream", Susan Mackey–Kallis, an associate professor from Villanova University, with
co–author Ian McDermott, explain how Springsteen, himself, spoke out against usage of music in
this manner of only paying attention to the surface (Mackey–Kallis 7). This also true for many
listeners throughout the country. Listening to this song based on the

of not getting his old job back. He ends by saying that he was born in the USA, but this is more of a
negative statement than one of patriotism. At least, that's how I interpreted the lyrics. Throughout
the song, the same two keyboard (synthesizer?) chord is repeated, while the drums mostly keeps the
same beat. It toke a couple listens and watching the music video to hear that the electric guitar also
has an influence after the first verse. As much as I generally enjoy Springsteen's work of the
seventies and the eighties, his locals make it difficult to understand during the first couple of listens.
But, his vocals are meant to angry as, in one respect, this is a protest song.

Bruce Springsteen's Song Born In The USA
"Born in the U.S.A." was a song written and performed by Bruce Springsteen. The song was first
released on June 4, 1984 appearing on the album that conveniently shared the same name with the
song, Born in the U.S.A. The song was originally written and produced by Springsteen in 1982 and
was titled "Vietnam." However, the song was cut from Bruce Springsteen's album, Nebraska that
was released in 1982 and the song was later renamed. The song was an instant hit after it's release in
1984, appearing on Billboards Top 100 for 17 weeks straight and being considered a Top 10 single
in America during 1984. The album Born in the U.S.A. also received tremendous success selling

The song from its release sparked great controversy over it's meaning, with the up tempo beat and
catchy chorus "I was Born in the U.S.A." was often misinterpreted as a patriotic American song,
during a time when U.S. morale was low and American's had nostalgia for the 1950's (Pompeian).
President Ronald Reagan was the most notable for misinterpreting the lyrics behind "Born in The
U.S.A." as he used it for his 1984 campaign. Although "Born In The U.S.A" has a catchy chorus,
which can easily be mistaken as a patriotic song, it is in the verses where Springsteen speaks of the
troubles Vietnam War veterans had when readjusting to American society and the struggles
Americans faced with deindustrialization and the economic troubles during the 1980's. First, "Born
in the U.S.A." brings to light the struggles that Vietnam veterans had readjusting into American
society after the war and also helps the listener sympathize for the Vietnam

Woody Guthrie's Song 'This Land Is Your Land'

is everyone's, not just the people who can pay for it. He traveled across the U.S.A singing hundreds
of song that he wrote. He also made quotes that are still famous today. This song and these quotes
are similar to each other, but they also are different from each other. In these ways, This Land is
Your Land is similar to Woody's quotes. First of all, they are similar because they both say Woody
will never give up singing until his very last second on Earth. He states it in the quotes, where he
says I will fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. In the song, he
says nobody living can ever stop me. Another similarity is they are saying that everyone is worth it,
everyone has a place. That is what Woody believed in. Finally, they are similar because they both
came from Woody, they both told what he felt in his heart. It is easy to tell when your hear the music
or read the quotes. They have deep passion in them. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bless America, and the quotes were Woody pouring his heart out. Woody liked God Bless America
because it has what he thought was right, and you're going to think very hard about a response to a
song you like. When a person is just saying what they believe in, it isn't going to be planed

their right to freedom of speech as a way to express their point of view on issues facing the country.
Over time, voicing one's opinion went from outspoken newspaper articles to large rallies, and during
the Vietnam War, music was a prevalent tool in aiding the protests. Allowing political messages to
be shared nationally, the music had touched the lives of the younger generation. Author Jerome L.

Initially, wars involving the United States were typically well supported by the people, but the
abhorrence towards the military 's actions in Vietnam lead musical artists to stand in opposition to
the war, encouraging the anti–war movement.
As the war persisted, not everyone's voice was being heard. To quickly spread the message to a
wider demographic, American musical artists incorporated political beliefs into their music. For
example, Jimi Hendrix wrote songs such as "Machine Gun" to show his disdain towards the war, but
the biggest statement he made was his performance at Woodstock. Creating his own interpretation of
"The Star–Spangled Banner", Hendrix would always be remembered as taking a stand against the
political leaders in charge of the United State's involvement in Vietnam. The effect Hendrix created
is captured by author Desmond Manderson as he explains the performance had "interrogated the
memory and ideals of the United States ... explicitly contrasting old with new, patriotism with
violence, and victimhood with aggression" (315). Also, the rock group The Doors contributed to the
movement by writing the song "Unknown Soldier", which depicts the real tragedy of a soldier 's
fate. One of the most

The Causes Of The Hmong War
The Hmong people claim to have helped in the war, but no one has noticed who they were. The
Hmong came from southeast Asia, many fled from the war as a refuge from their country, it's
melancholy that people need to do this. The main cause was a political war and it has lug on for a
while, the war caused many deaths in the Hmong people and for other different ethnic groups in the
southeast Asian countries. When America came to preclude the war from going further, they were
aided by a secret army made by the Hmong people. But there were many casualties, especially in the
Hmong population, near one third of the population perished in the involvement in the war. And
they couldn't take any more casualties so they fled. When they arrived in America, they mostly
settled in Minnesota therefore separated slowly into other states. And as that happened, they slowly
lost their customs as they lived in America. Then the Hmong was mistreated, they had been slowly
forgotten and their aid was never recognized by the USA.
The Hmong came to the U.S.A to escape the tragedy that happened in the southeast Asian countries,
several of their relatives was left behind unhurriedly suffering, aside from that when the Hmong
people were brought to the U.S.A there were many that was aided but minority families had many

There are millions of illegal immigrants in the United States, as Markon (2016) argues that illegal

Many seem to think that "Born in the U.S.A." is an extremely patriotic song in which Springsteen is
almost proclaiming how proud he is to be an American but this is far from reality. The song actually
deals with the Vietnam War and the suffering that occurs when veterans come back home. One of
Springsteen's verse makes this scene quite a real one for us as listeners, "Come back home to the
refinery/ Hiring man said "son if it was up to me/ Went down to see my V.A. man/ He said "son, don
't you understand"" (Springsteen). This particular verse deals with the struggle that many veterans
had when they came back home and began looking for jobs.
Vietnam was unlike any other war America had been a part of before. First and foremost, most
people consider the war a loss for America. The main objective of the war was to stop the spread of
Communism to South Vietnam. American troops were able to accomplish this task but as soon as
they were pulled out and sent home, the North invaded the South and took over. In the end
Communism had spread to South Vietnam. Returning troops are generally welcomed home like the
heros that they are. Take World War 2 for example, the troops coming home for combat were
welcomed with parades all across the country, but not after Vietnam (COL. Jack Jacobs, U.S.
ARMY (RET.))
Prior to the end of America's involvement in Vietnam, the country was divided. Large amounts of
demonstrations called for an end to the

Charlotte And Jessica Herrin: Article Analysis
Do you think people need to live in the richest countries to become a successful entrepreneur? The
answer is No! If anyone struggle to achieve his or her goal, there will be success wherever they are.
In The Blue Sweater, in chapter 12, Jacqueline Novogratz mentioned Charlotte who lived in
Rwanda, the poorest country in the world, and become a successful businesswoman. Also, Jessica
Herrin who have lived in the U.S.A was a successful businesswoman. Both, Charlotte and Jessica
Herrin were successful entrepreneurs; however their education background and nationalities were
different. To begin with, Charlotte and Herrin were successful entrepreneurs. Charlotte had nothing
when her friend gave her four litters of milk. However, Charlotte used the milk to start her business:
she sold the milk and earned $3. Then she took a $50 loan to buy more milk. She worked hard until
she opened a small cafe. After a while, she bought a share restaurant, and the restaurant was
successful; it served more than 250 meals a day. In addition to the restaurant, she rented out chairs
for events. Finally, she owned most part of the building, and became successful. Similarly, Jessica
Herrin had nothing when she began weddingchannal.com in 2014. Herrin worked day and ... Show

The Effects Of Illegal Immigrants On The United States
There are millions of illegal immigrants in the United States, as Markon (2016) argues that the
majority are from South and Central America, Europe, and Mexico. They form a population of
between 10 million to 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States. One of these
illegal is my father, who came to the U.S.A in 1996 to work and tried to pay the numerous debts that
he got in my country; in addition, my country had a large concern where there weren't jobs and
several banks had gone broke because of the change from Sucre to the dollar. At that time, my father

James (1991) points out that illegal made various effects to be legal, such as creating fake
documents like Social Security or green cards, and faking marriage. All those affairs are called
fraud, and they can be deported directly without any opportunity to get a trial. Anti– immigration
supports comment that "the problem with undocumented immigrant workers is that flouting the law
has become the norm." (Miller, 2010).
Another reason why people support deportation is because some illegals come as criminals and
cross the border to damage the country. According to James (1991) says some of illegals cross the
border to bring drugs like cocaine, heroin, and marijuana, or do illicit things. The drugs, which a lot
of Americans consume, come from South America to Mexico. Where a drug dealer produces, then
and sends them to the U.S.A. In the 1990's the maximum portion of the drugs came from Mexico,
where drug traffickers passed the drugs through the river that is between Mexico and the U.S.A
(James, 1991). These acts have created the increase of crime and violence and have made it unsafe
peacefully to live for the citizens and for the life of the "members of the Border Patrol by illegal
border crossers" (James, 1991).
However, not all undocumented immigrants cause a harmful effect and

The Most Important Of Writers Developed With A New Type Of...
American Modernist writers experimented with a new type of fictional writing in the 1920's through
the 1930's during and after the war. One of the most important of these writers was John Dos Passos.
Dos Passos was a creative novelist where in his writing he analyzed his love/hate relationship with
the traditions of American life and consistently questioned the American dream (Wagner–Martin).
His full name was John Roderigo Dos Passos. He was born on January 14th, 1896 in Chicago
Illinois. His father, John Randolph Dos Passos, was a wealthy lawyer who could afford to give him
the best education growing up. In 1907, he was sent to study at the Choate school in Wallingford,
Connecticut (Donne). He then went with a private tutor on a six–month tour of France, England,
Italy, Greece, and the Middle East in order to study the masters of classic art, architecture, and
literature (Donne). In 1913, he attended Harvard University. After he graduation in 1916, he traveled
to Spain to study art and architecture. After that, Dos Passos volunteered as an ambulance driver in
World War I. "Experiences on the Western front confirmed Dos Passos in his belief that the war was
a foolish waste" (Badertscher). When World War 1 demanded that writers deal with a world that was
being disrupted in many ways, novelists like John Dos Passos changed fiction by creating characters
to emphasise the individuals in society.

Born In The USA: Song Analysis
Throughout this course I have learned that Bruce's songs have a deeper meaning than the tempo,
instruments and lyrics of the song present. This is proven again with the songs Nebraska, Born in
the USA, Ghost of Tom Joad, and Streets of Philadelphia. These songs can almost be looked at
spiritually and emotionally for those who feel they don't fit in with society. As Chet Flippo says
about Bruce's songs in his interview "a fundamentalist acceptance of life and its troubles, along with
the faith that true belief will bring a better way." All four songs describe "outcasts" or "rascals"
perfectly. The two songs that surprised me the most are "Nebraska" and "Born in the U.S.A." Each
song has a completely different tempo and background. Nebraska being based on a murder spree
and Born in the USA about Vietnam Veterans, but both can speak to listeners that fall under the
isolation category and can help their spiritual and emotional well–being by feeling like they are not
alone. Listening to Nebraska I felt like there was not an overall deep meaning. I just thought it was a
very depressing song about a guy killing ten people and being put on death row for it, until the last
lyric "well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world." This lyric really speaks for those that
may feel like they don't belong with this world or may feel like ... Show more content on

Bruce Springsteen's Song 'Born In The USA'
Ask anyone during the mid 1980's and I can promise you they have heard "Born in the U.S.A" by
Bruce Springsteen. Written in 1984, this record setting single was the theme song for America
during the Vietnam war. "Born in the U.S.A" swept the nation by storm, selling 18 million copies.
Every American may know to scream as loud as they can when the lyrics "BORN IN THE U.S.A"
come on, but they may not necessarily know the true meaning behind the song. Many think it's a
song about patriotism, but it's actually a song that shows the cruel treatment that Vietnam veterans
received upon returning home. This widely supported song deals with the negative effects of the
Vietnam War on Americans and the cruel mistreatment of Vietnam veterans when they returned
home from the war. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning of the song, Bruce sings, "Got in a little hometown jam, so they put a rifle in my
hand, sent me off to a foreign land, to go and kill the yellow man" (""Born In The U.S.A." Lyrics.").
This is referring to when the government sent soldiers over to Vietnam to kill the Viet Cong. The
song continues to scream patriotism as shown in the repeated lyrics "Born in the U.S.A". The song
then goes into the struggles for Vietnam veterans when they returned home from the war. It then
continues to talk about the hardship these veterans faced when looking for a job. No one at the time
wanted to hire anyone who was affiliated with the war because many Americans were against it. The
song then goes into talking about one of this buddies who went over to fight the Viet Cong. Bruce
sings about how the Viet Cong is still there and he died in an effort to defeat them. This not only
talks about one person who died, it is also a representation of all soldiers who lost their lives during
the war. This song was not only a song intended to raise Americans patriotism, it also showed the
hardships Vietnam veterans had to face both over seas, as well as back

Bruce Springsteen Is Known For His Genuine And Relatable
Bruce Springsteen is known for his genuine and relatable poems. He composes poems based on their
ability to speak to the average American, and their ability to provide an identifiable composition of
lyrics to millions of people across the nation. The repeating refrain within "Born In The U.S.A."
brings attention to alternate viewpoints of current and controversial events, while his spontaneous
rhyming results in a musical flow. These patterns are also present within "Leaving The Cold.""Born

When he comes back from the Vietnam War, he comes back to essentially nothing. He is not given
many opportunities that could result in any type of expansion and affluence; he has "Nowhere to run
ain't go nowhere to go" (29). He was born in the U.S.A. and his country has used and abandoned
him. The narrative and refrain together create this cynical view of America as a whole. Although a
large majority believes the United States of America has its peoples' best interest at heart,
Springsteen suggests that some may view this nation as simply using its people instead. "Leaving
The Cold" also displays the unifying pattern of narrative and refrain. This poem was composed
around 1991; the year in which the Cold War finally came to an end. The refrain describes a man
who is dressed in a red suit who comes to the American people and leads them out of a dark and
cold era and into a period of welfare. Springsteen discusses throughout the narrative of the poem
how Presidents of the United States come into term and leave when they have finished serving the
people. Political elections are often a source of dissension. Numerous opinions and rumors can alter
the process, the outcome, and the permanent perception of a presidency. Springsteen suggests that
"It's insane to think how we become blind / And remember the chills but forget / The red and suited
lad / Who comes to lead us out of the cold" (14–16). People commonly focus on the negative

The birth of Motown music came to be in a small recording studio aptly named Hitsville, U.S.A.

Motown helped break down some racial barriers during this era. America during this era was one of
gross racial stereotypes. Motown forced America to confront its own feelings about race,
community, intolerance, justice and reality. Motown coincided with the emergence of the civil rights
movement and both were inextricably linked. Motown was a type of prelude for Dr. Martin Luther
King; it helped set the stage for the major changes that were underway. Motown broke many of the
traditional stereotypes of African Americans. This music was the backbone for conversation,

The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture

  • 1. The Concepts Of Nature Vs Nurture The concepts of Nature vs Nurture, are major concepts in social science. Nature is the hereditary pattern of physical features in a human being 's development. These features include, but are not limited to, our personality, usual and unusual appearances and the general measurements of how humans hold the attributes of being sociable, hostile behavior, their emotions, and the usage of alcohol and drugs. On the other hand Nurture is slightly different. Nurture is the influence of the environment that plays upon the behavior and characteristics in a human. The idea of nurture is that humans will grow up to form their personality on the way they are raised and life experiences. Culture is defined by the people in the environment, however, the environment helps shape and form human personalities in order to forge a culture. Culture is created by religions/beliefs, clothing/foods, language/social habits as well as the humanistic discipline; such as music, paintings, literature, and many more. Culture is generated by humankind, because humans hold their belief systems and patterns that was passed down by generations; by humans passing down what they have learned from their families this begins to create a culture. Personality plays a central role in both nature vs nurture and culture. Furthermore, personality is stated "the total organization of inherited and acquired characteristics of an individual as evidenced by the individual 's behavior (Hunt 119). Personality is either ... • 3. The Song By Bruce Springsteen I was not born in the United States; yet, Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." hit from his 1984 album by the same title is still culturally and politically significant. Springsteen is one of those artists that is still heard in modern times because of the great amount of fame he has acquired throughout his career. The song bring some attention to the wrongdoings of the United States government in their treatment of their veterans, especially after the Vietnam War. It raises awareness by using a catchy melody to draw listeners in; but Springsteen fails to achieve his ultimate goal of influencing young adults to protest against their government because the memorable words in the chorus overshadow the plot in the verses. This makes the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Springsteen's choice to involve himself in political issues, although not explicitly, was something that was building up throughout his life as he transitioned from a young adult to an adult in his mid– thirties. As explained by New York Times writer Nicholas Dawidoff in an article from 1997 titled "The Pop Populist", Springsteen's main concerns were not that of chasing young woman, but that of needing to change the world around him (Dawidoff). By the time Springsteen wrote "Born in the U.S.A.", he had already built a good reputation for himself in the United States. This makes it possible for Springsteen to influence large crowds of people to take action or, at the very least, listen to what he has to say. Ronald Reagan used this song to praise American values. The irony of this is that the song is doing the exact opposite of praising the United States for their role in the Vietnam War and their treatment of their veterans. In an article titled "Bruce Springsteen, Ronald Reagan and the American Dream", Susan Mackey–Kallis, an associate professor from Villanova University, with co–author Ian McDermott, explain how Springsteen, himself, spoke out against usage of music in this manner of only paying attention to the surface (Mackey–Kallis 7). This also true for many listeners throughout the country. Listening to this song based on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The narrator then finds himself in prison, after attempting to burn down the refinery in protest of not getting his old job back. He ends by saying that he was born in the USA, but this is more of a negative statement than one of patriotism. At least, that's how I interpreted the lyrics. Throughout the song, the same two keyboard (synthesizer?) chord is repeated, while the drums mostly keeps the same beat. It toke a couple listens and watching the music video to hear that the electric guitar also has an influence after the first verse. As much as I generally enjoy Springsteen's work of the seventies and the eighties, his locals make it difficult to understand during the first couple of listens. But, his vocals are meant to angry as, in one respect, this is a protest song. Works Cited "Born in the U.S.A. (song)." Wikipedia. Wikimedia Foundation, 2 Nov. 2016. Web. 2 Nov. 2016. . Z, Jay. The song was first released on June 4, 1984 appearing on the album that conveniently shared the same name with the song, Born in the U.S.A. The song was originally written and produced by Springsteen in 1982 and was titled "Vietnam." The song from its release sparked great controversy over it's meaning, with the up tempo beat and catchy chorus "I was Born in the U.S.A." was often misinterpreted as a patriotic American song, during a time when U.S. morale was low and American's had nostalgia for the 1950's (Pompeian). President Ronald Reagan was the most notable for misinterpreting the lyrics behind "Born in The U.S.A." as he used it for his 1984 campaign. Although "Born In The U.S.A" has a catchy chorus, which can easily be mistaken as a patriotic song, it is in the verses where Springsteen speaks of the troubles Vietnam War veterans had when readjusting to American society and the struggles Americans faced with deindustrialization and the economic troubles during the 1980's. First, "Born in the U.S.A." brings to light the struggles that Vietnam veterans had readjusting into American society after the war and also helps the listener sympathize for the Vietnam ... He wrote it to explain that America is everyone's, not just the people who can pay for it. He traveled across the U.S.A singing hundreds of song that he wrote. He also made quotes that are still famous today. This song and these quotes are similar to each other, but they also are different from each other. In these ways, This Land is Your Land is similar to Woody's quotes. First of all, they are similar because they both say Woody will never give up singing until his very last second on Earth. He states it in the quotes, where he says I will fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. In the song, he says nobody living can ever stop me. Another similarity is they are saying that everyone is worth it, everyone has a place. That is what Woody believed in. The Sixties Between The Microgrooves Essay Kensi Laube Professor Sattler American History II 17 March 2017 Research Paper Since the Constitution of the United States was written, Americans have practiced their right to freedom of speech as a way to express their point of view on issues facing the country. Over time, voicing one's opinion went from outspoken newspaper articles to large rallies, and during the Vietnam War, music was a prevalent tool in aiding the protests. Allowing political messages to be shared nationally, the music had touched the lives of the younger generation. Author Jerome L. Initially, wars involving the United States were typically well supported by the people, but the abhorrence towards the military 's actions in Vietnam lead musical artists to stand in opposition to the war, encouraging the anti–war movement. As the war persisted, not everyone's voice was being heard. To quickly spread the message to a wider demographic, American musical artists incorporated political beliefs into their music. For example, Jimi Hendrix wrote songs such as "Machine Gun" to show his disdain towards the war, but the biggest statement he made was his performance at Woodstock. Creating his own interpretation of "The Star–Spangled Banner", Hendrix would always be remembered as taking a stand against the political leaders in charge of the United State's involvement in Vietnam. The effect Hendrix created is captured by author Desmond Manderson as he explains the performance had "interrogated the memory and ideals of the United States ... explicitly contrasting old with new, patriotism with violence, and victimhood with aggression" (315). You may think I am dumb and talk about I am being winner is dumbest thing I have ever talk. You can call me whatever you can because I was born with great title that few people in this world had, have, and will have. The title that might get you to know what is that. Let 's talk about Bhutan. I think everybody know that country Bhutan that is known as "World 's Happiest Country in The Earth." Imagining that is beginning beautiful. The country is beautiful due to the bloods and sweet of my grandparents, and parents. Country that called every country 's people to come and learn about good things on "Happiness." You know how well know Bhutan was. On the other part there was m,e a kids who know that happiness was not becoming happy. In my mind happiness was living in the struggle life. Struggle life that food aren't enough to eat. Education isn't good and proper. Where there is no hope and life is more worst than prison life. Struggle life? You might tell me struggling isn't happiness but I know that is happiness. Many seem to think that "Born in the U.S.A." is an extremely patriotic song in which Springsteen is almost proclaiming how proud he is to be an American but this is far from reality. The song actually deals with the Vietnam War and the suffering that occurs when veterans come back home. One of Springsteen's verse makes this scene quite a real one for us as listeners, "Come back home to the refinery/ Hiring man said "son if it was up to me/ Went down to see my V.A. man/ He said "son, don 't you understand"" (Springsteen). This particular verse deals with the struggle that many veterans had when they came back home and began looking for jobs. Vietnam was unlike any other war America had been a part of before. First and foremost, most people consider the war a loss for America. The main objective of the war was to stop the spread of Communism to South Vietnam. American troops were able to accomplish this task but as soon as they were pulled out and sent home, the North invaded the South and took over. In the end Communism had spread to South Vietnam. Anti– immigration supports comment that "the problem with undocumented immigrant workers is that flouting the law has become the norm." (Miller, 2010). American Modernist writers experimented with a new type of fictional writing in the 1920's through the 1930's during and after the war. One of the most important of these writers was John Dos Passos. Dos Passos was a creative novelist where in his writing he analyzed his love/hate relationship with the traditions of American life and consistently questioned the American dream (Wagner–Martin). His full name was John Roderigo Dos Passos. He was born on January 14th, 1896 in Chicago Illinois. His father, John Randolph Dos Passos, was a wealthy lawyer who could afford to give him the best education growing up. In 1907, he was sent to study at the Choate school in Wallingford, Connecticut (Donne). He then went with a private tutor on a six–month tour of France, England, Italy, Greece, and the Middle East in order to study the masters of classic art, architecture, and literature (Donne). In 1913, he attended Harvard University. After he graduation in 1916, he traveled to Spain to study art and architecture. After that, Dos Passos volunteered as an ambulance driver in World War I. "Experiences on the Western front confirmed Dos Passos in his belief that the war was a foolish waste" (Badertscher). This is proven again with the songs Nebraska, Born in the USA, Ghost of Tom Joad, and Streets of Philadelphia. These songs can almost be looked at spiritually and emotionally for those who feel they don't fit in with society. As Chet Flippo says about Bruce's songs in his interview "a fundamentalist acceptance of life and its troubles, along with the faith that true belief will bring a better way." All four songs describe "outcasts" or "rascals" perfectly. The two songs that surprised me the most are "Nebraska" and "Born in the U.S.A." Each song has a completely different tempo and background. Nebraska being based on a murder spree and Born in the USA about Vietnam Veterans, but both can speak to listeners that fall under the isolation category and can help their spiritual and emotional well–being by feeling like they are not alone. Listening to Nebraska I felt like there was not an overall deep meaning. I just thought it was a very depressing song about a guy killing ten people and being put on death row for it, until the last lyric "well sir I guess there's just a meanness in this world." He is not given many opportunities that could result in any type of expansion and affluence; he has "Nowhere to run ain't go nowhere to go" (29). He was born in the U.S.A. and his country has used and abandoned him. The narrative and refrain together create this cynical view of America as a whole. Although a large majority believes the United States of America has its peoples' best interest at heart, Springsteen suggests that some may view this nation as simply using its people instead. "Leaving The Cold" also displays the unifying pattern of narrative and refrain. This poem was composed around 1991; the year in which the Cold War finally came to an end. The refrain describes a man who is dressed in a red suit who comes to the American people and leads them out of a dark and cold era and into a period of welfare. Springsteen discusses throughout the narrative of the poem how Presidents of the United States come into term and leave when they have finished serving the people. Political elections are often a source of dissension. Numerous opinions and rumors can alter the process, the outcome, and the permanent perception of a presidency.
