The Importance Of Higher Education
During high school, many students begin to debate the significance of a higher education and
question the importance of obtaining a college degree. However, attaining a college education offers
opportunities for graduates that can not be received without it. Unlike previous generations, students
who graduate high school today are not able to acquire the several well–paying jobs that were once
offered. Today, graduating college compares to the importance of graduating high school decades
ago. America has turned into an economy built on knowledge, and a higher education continues to
be one of the greatest investments one can make for a successful future, "In today's economy, higher
education is no longer a luxury for the privileged few, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Another side of the debate proposes that the best way to increase college affordability is through
improving access to financial aid. Students need more and better financial aid to keep up with the
rising costs of college. Heavy debt and incompletion of degrees due to financial reasons may be
reduced if sufficient financial aid programs are established. Efforts should be aimed at simplifying
the complex financial aid application form.
Overall, if colleges reevaluate their policies to make higher education more affordable, they will
save students and taxpayers millions of dollars without undermining their academic goals.
One side of the debate argues that in order to make college more affordable, the government should
introduce different ways to help students gain free college credits through college level learning
online. They argue that there are plenty of online courseware available at no cost, but that getting
credit for completing the free courses is too difficult. They want the government to make tests
available free of cost for mandatory introduction college courses and for colleges to accept financial
aid funds to pay for the credits earned this way. This could allow a student to complete up to one
year of higher level education with no cost at an accommodating self–paced structure. The forgoing
policies would be beneficial as they may encourage

Religion In Higher Education
Introduction/ Historical significance Throughout the years there's been a tremendous change in the
collegiate way of living. The American college life as we know it simulated the swinging of a
pendulum in a deep curve. In the colonial days practices such as loco parentis was prevalent in
higher education institutions. Religion was also a huge part in higher education as well as campus
life. Extracurricular activities came to the surface as students began to form their own organizations
and identities. The integration of extracurricular activities into academic programs was quite the
challenge in the early colonial days. Many leaders of higher education began to have a change of
mind concerning the expansion of extracurricular activities ... Show more content on

Has it been restored? Although higher education institutions are now considered secular, this was
not the case in the early colonial age. Jacobsen and Jacobsen (2012) mentioned that the three stages
of campus religion in the history of American higher education could presumably be split into the
following three stages: Protestant, Privatized and Multiform (p.2). At the time of the Protestant age,
religion and morality (character formation) were paramount to higher education institutions. At the
time of the Privatized age, religion was commonly shifted into the private scope of personal choice
as learning and teaching began to target impartiality and practicality. The third section (Multiform)
is the current age we live in. In this current age there are many sorts of religions that are prominent
in cultural discourse. Jacobsen and Jacobsen (2012) observed that, "religion's "return" has been
facilitated by several broad developments within higher education, including new emphases on
multiculturalism, professional studies, and student–centered

The Internationalisation Of Higher Education
The internationalisation of Higher Education is a mainstream focus, however a review of the
literature highlights issues of concerns to some scholars and researchers. Callan (2006) states that "a
reading of the literature on the internationalisation, both European and world–wide (particularly
North America) shows that.... the concept has been understood and applied in a highly variable
fashion" (Callan,2006, p. 16). Kehm and Teichler (2007) concur, postulating that the
internationalisation of HE is fraught 'with strong political undercurrents' embracing transnational
and off–shore campuses and issues of cultural diversity and quality control (Kehm and Teichler,
2007, p. 261). Careful analysis of the literature would seem to support Knight's view that
"Internationalisation is changing the world of Higher Education and globalisation is changing the
world of internationalisation" (Knight,2004, p.5).
Welch (2002) looks at the historical and economic background on globalisation and links this to the
phenomenon of internationalisation of higher education. He summarises the works of authors
including Sklair, Harvey and Giddens. He looks at the rationales that have been utilised to justify
the internationalisation of HE, including Knights' taxonomy of political, economic and academic
rationales. Welch also examines international student flows, as well as the extent to which
internationalisation impacts on Australian universities. He examines the growth of the international

The Education Of Higher Education
Institutions of higher learning compete amongst each other, enabling them to focus on subjects that
do not pertain to education. The education system has become more of a business organization,
making learning their second priority and further shifting their focus from the quality of education
and students to the quantity of students and the popularity of their institution. The economy of the
country has also had a big impact on shaping universities operating systems. American modern
economy is based on knowledge, thus there is an increasing high demand for higher education.
Higher education has become a market system, and universities have to change their traditional
structure in order to become a valuable competitor; although education is in demand, the supply of
quality in education is decreasing. Competition among traditional universities and the increase of
for–profit schools have diminished the value of higher education. Educational instiutions are
evolving into businesses and primarily focusing on the profit aspect.Education is a very valuable
business, it creates a lot of free cash flow and there is a high rate of educational needs that continue
to grow. In the essay"The Sandbox Experiment" , by Peter Sacks, the author makes an argument that
professors are placed in situations where they are forced to moderate their course material in order
to please their students(Sacks 1–2). Sacks conducts the "Sandbox experiment" which demonstrated

Education is a key to a better and successful life. According to the article, "Why is higher education

Institutions Of Higher Learning. An Institution Of Higher
Institutions of higher learning
An institution of higher learning is defined as a place that offers undergraduate and graduate degree
programs (Barrow, Brock, & Rouse, 2013). In the United States they date back to before the
American Revolution, and have continually adapted to meet the needs of learners (Barrow, Brock,
& Rouse, 2013). For example, institutions of higher learning are always incorporating new
programs and working towards creating a quality learning environment. In the 21st century
institutions of higher learning have moved in the direction of making a higher education more
available and now have the ability to reach local learners and learners on the other side of the world
(Alexey, 2016).

While the College of William and Mary focused on preparing learners for ordination into the
Church of England, they were the first institution of higher learning to have full time faculty.
Harvard University maintained a small amount of faculty that were well known for their knowledge,
and by 1782 added medical studies (Harvard University, 2016). Harvard University is also well
known for buildings originally built in the 18th century that are still standing. For example,
Massachusetts Hall, built in 1720 and Wadsworth House build in 1726 (Harvard University, 2016).
Buildings built during the 17th century that did not survive and have their original locations marked
with brass markers. The College of William and Mary is known for the Sir Christopher Wren
Building, which is the oldest college building still standing (Fishman, 2015).
During the 19th century, Harvard University added additional programs and celebrated its
bicentennial. Harvard's 15th President Josiah Quincy displayed a new university shield with the
motto "Veritas" at the universities 200th birthday celebration, the shield was officially adopted in
1843 (Christen, 2013). Quincy remained the university 's president from 1829 to 1845, during a time
when teaching methods evolved and a larger variety of courses became available. During Quincy's
time as President, students had more freedom to select courses of their choice and the use of lectures

Purpose of Higher Education
Louis Menand, a professor of English and American literature at Harvard University, presented
three different theories for the purpose of higher education in The New Yorker's article named, Live
and Learn: Why We Have College. Menand (2011) claims that the reasons for a college education
are meritocratic, democratic, and vocational. These theories are great models for the purpose of
higher education in our culture at different points in our history. Our colleges and universities
conduct instruction with clear and definite intentions. The institutions of higher education adopt
certain techniques designed to serve specific goals. These methods evolve with time and shape the
way that generations think and reason. The government's influence in ... Show more content on

The federal government stayed on the sidelines during this time, even though reports warned that
without education reform, the United States could lose its dominance in the global economy.
However, the government did not show any significant interest in the battles about the best form of
education during this decade.
In 2006, the Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, revived the need to review the state of
higher education in the United States. The report, A Test of Leadership: Charting the Future of US
Higher Education, laid the foundation for the current purpose of higher education in our nation. The
report implied that the institutions must listen to capitalism instead of democracy. Most of the report
emphasized on how the industry complained about under–prepared graduates that lacked
communication and mathematical skills. The report clearly states, "we want a world–class higher
education system that creates knowledge, contributes to economic prosperity and global
competitiveness, and empowers citizens" (as cited by Hutcheson, 2011). Additionally, the
commission recommended that everyone should complete some sort of higher education, like
vocational training or an associate degree, to contribute to the goal of global competitiveness. That
recommendation supports the projection of the market's needs for workers with some level of post–
secondary training in

The Future of Higher Education
Higher education is generally referring to any form of education after secondary education. The
industry of higher education has been established already for almost several centuries, and in
contemporary times, this industry is indeed going to experience modifications on how the industry
will function and continue on. The Princeton Review was established in 1981, and their main
mission of test–preparation, tutoring services, and higher education admission counseling have
remained constant throughout these years (The Princeton Review). But due to the many changing
factors in the contemporary society, some changes must be made on the rising tuition costs and on
an unprepared workforce, as based on Time Magazine (Meacham). Also, due to the emergence of
the Internet, online higher education courses also plays a major role in the future of higher
education. One of the major changes that should be implemented into the Princeton Review is to
lower the costs that are spent on entering higher education. According to the College Board,
statistics have shown that the price of college has risen exponentially from 1973 to 2014, where an
average college education in a private school costs around $30,000 USD compared to around
$10,000 USD in 1973. Also in a public school, the costs rose to around $8,000 USD in 2014
compared to $2,000 USD in 1973 (College Board). Other than the general costs of higher education,
there are also other spending required, especially in areas like college

College and universities deal with a myriad of issues that impact students, faculty, and
administrators. Mattie (2007) asserts "risk can be defined as any issue that impacts an institution's
ability to meet its objectives" (p. 3). Issues like sexual harassment, student discipline, free speech,
academic misconduct, tenure, race and religion are risk but how they are managed can impact
institutions. This review will examine Carol L. J. Hustoles 2012 dissertation Through the Eyes of

Based on some of the findings from the study, it is suggested that institutions should: be proactively
providing training for their department chairs on legal and risk management issues while involving
legal counsel in training, increase the amount of training chairpersons receive, continuously involve
campus attorneys in issues that arise, and chairs should become familiar with the provisions in
collective bargaining. The study conducted by Hustoles provides great insight into how attorneys
view the role and performance of administrators. Although risk management is the task of everyone
on campus, attorneys have to deal with all legal issues on campus. Hustoles (2012) study also
sought to fill in the literature gap as there is no literature that discusses the attorneys view in risk
management. According to Hustoles this is the only study that offers that data. The study can be
beneficial to institutions as they train administrators to deal with risk

The Importance Of Higher Education
Although there are many students who participate in higher education like college, it is not a
universal normality. Even so, college is universally credited as the place that helps people reach
their definition of success. College is a step in the right direction as many people will note. It is a
place that educates students in a specific field they hope to make a career out of. College has a
stigma though, it is thought of as a place that produces robots of society; highly educated, skilled,
and very ambitious people. College should not be seen as the manufacturer of robots, it should be
thought of as the place students go to learn how to be better unique individuals who can unify to
help make the world a better place. It might sound like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The reason why critical thinking is so important in college, is because it helps build a strong
foundation and mindset that leads to success. "The heartbeat of critical thinking is the longing to
know–to understand how life works," (bell hooks). This quote shows the motives behind critical
thinking, wanting to know how life works. Life involves many different areas, from people, animals,
nature, and more. It should also be noted that when more people want to know how the world
works, those people will be more inclined to make rational, reasonable, and educated decisions.
Students learn about the who, what, when, where, and why because it helps them in life when
considering which choices to make. Although the purpose of creating opportunities and providing
knowledge is very important, college should be about much more than that. Education is a tricky
topic to speak about in terms of purpose. While college is recognized for the education that helps
students build careers, it is not focusing on an important topic, respect. While respect may seem like
a very simple concept, saying please, excuse me, and thank you, it goes deep beyond those surface
points. Respect comes into play when students have graduated college. Many people will hold the
power of their diploma as a weapon against those who do not have one themselves. As mentioned
before, college is not accessible to everyone, and it is not because these

The Education Of Higher Education
The idea of Higher Education is a crucial thread in the fabric of this nation, woven through our
culture, beliefs and politics. The best of American Higher Education outstrips any others in the
world and the output of American Institutions is unparalleled. To stay competitive and expand the
current education horizon, different types of institutions, evolve and prioritize differently to ensure
the best education quality to targeted students. However, today Higher Education is facing more
challenges and critiques than at any other point in history. Indeed, when encountering the
unavoidable struggle between pleasing students and following government regulations, colleges
start to rouse from their academic wish–fulfillment fantasies and realize that the idea of Higher
Education does not swab away the realism of this materialistic world: higher education cannot
simply satisfy everyone. Three distinctive educational models, public universities, non–profit
private universities and for–profit universities, demonstrate the complex dynamic among schools,
government and students. Although the three educational models share different education
philosophy and serve multiple objectives, they all have the same purpose in the end: to help one
realize his or her own unique potential in order to manage the diversity of expectations and
challenges one would face in the society. As we know, each educational model strives to provide the

Is Higher Education Worth It?
Is Higher Education Worth It? When young adults finish high school they are driven to enroll into a
higher education program. With the constant talks of soaring tuition costs, in addition to the massive
student loan debt, taking this step can be worrisome. Reyna Gobel, a journalist on financing college
and repaying student debt, states. "It's easy to stop believing that a college education is worth it
when the nation has over a trillion dollars in debt, but college graduates still earn more over a
lifetime than those without a degree. Plus, they're more employable." More than three–quarters of
college graduates agree that higher education is indeed still worth the cost. Additional education in a
field you're passionate about will drive your success, making education an invaluable asset.
Unfortunately, the increase in student loan debt has been on the rise increasing a staggering 91%
from 2003 till 2012. This is leaving the majority of graduates with an average total debt of around
$21,326 according to (Meta Brown and Sydnee Caldwell). Keep in mind these numbers are
pertaining to a four–year degree. This can be incredibly frightening for numerous people.
Nevertheless, this should not deter you from obtaining the education you seek. The potential
earnings you can make with a solid educational foundation is much higher of that of a high school
diploma.

pave the path to a better economy and society, starting a career, and ensuring a better life, that is
why going to college should be free. Education is one of the most important things we can give

wanting to further their education. Some families are not able to afford the high price tag of college.
Having access to free higher education will eliminate students struggling after graduating to pay
their loans off, ensuring a more stable life. Every person should have the right to have access to
education. If everyone had access to higher education the public at large will be more educated thus
having educated workers. Having workers that are educated attracts more future employees. With
having an educated public there would be more concern with bettering their jobs and their lifestyle.
The country as a whole would do better with people graduating from college and start working,
rather than just graduating from high school and begin working. The class gap would shrink in size
because with everyone having access to free higher education there will be better jobs for everyone.

Higher education has become a staple of American society. With over 20 million students attending
over 4,500 degree granting institutions, the role that higher education has played on larger society is
paramount (Thelin, 2017). However, despite the popularity of higher education institutions, the
exact purpose of higher education has changed from century to century and may serve different
purposes depending on who is asked. Higher education today is arguably both a public and private
good. While state and federal governments have invested in a variety of higher education initiatives,

Although it seems as if the founding of Harvard and other colleges during the Colonial Era were
beneficial to the larger society, it seems as if these colleges contributed to higher education in the
United States manifesting as a private good. Despite the number of opportunities Harvard and other
colonial colleges had on American society, these institutions further divided the elite from the rest of
society, since all students came from wealthy families. In fact, soon after the founding of Harvard
and other colonial colleges, being educated was tantamount to being elite (Marine, 2017).
Furthermore, acceptance into these institutions was limited to White men, who were required to
have prior knowledge of both Latin and Greek (Bastedo et al, 2016). With early United States higher
education serving such a limited clientele, going to college was clearly not on the minds of most
Americans. However, through the signing of the Morrill Land–Grant Colleges Act by President
Abraham Lincoln in 1862, college could become a reality for more Americans (Loss 2012; Widmer,

A higher education can help with people's emotional state and the health of that person. There is also
the case that you don't have to be in college for that long to start working and gain a high paying
wage. "And. beyond money, education seems to make people happier and healthier"
(D). Not only does seeking a higher education gets you a higher paying wage it also makes you a
happier person. This could work by the interaction with fellow students on the campus and more
knowledge than the average human. Money isn't the only reason why people are happier after

There isn't going to be a substantial wage growth for the new college graduates. A higher education
may not be what everyone thinks it is, being a source to making more money when you get out of

how expensive college really is. College cost is exceedingly high as of right now and may become

Goals Of Higher Education
The general public of the United States believes greatly in the higher education system. For many
graduating high school students, the goal is to become enrolled and graduate from college. In order
to determine whether the education system works, one must determine if students who attend
college gain from entering, but more so from leaving college. The American higher education
system functions very well and accomplishes its goal. But throughout the country there are many
goals that the system of higher education sets for itself, as well as set by the general public.
Colleges have very many goals that they have set out to accomplish. The United States hopes to
have more people attend universities, to increase diversity within higher education, and to make
college affordable. In the United States the population with a college degree has increased
throughout the years as a goal of the United States to have a more educated population of more
diverse backgrounds.
While the cost does not deter individuals from enrolling in institutions of higher education a large
portion of the population would not be able to afford college without the help form financial

Federal regulation, endowment, State appropriations," (Tuition Rising). But why are the costs
rising? Patrick M. Callan, president of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education,
states that "there's not much going on in either private or public higher education that is very serious
about cost control," (Tuition Rising). He believes that "Underlying all this is that more kids are
graduating from high school every year, most of them want to go to college, and so it's a seller's
market. Universities raise tuition because they can,"(Tuition Rising). This makes us wonder if
universities are tricking us of our money since they have not documented where tuition is going. In
order to avoid confusion from students and parents who want answers, the government should
require institutions to have documentation of what tuition is funding.
Financial aid is a popular choice for students to fund their college education, which presently costs

The Importance Of Higher Education
Introduction
Education is basically the process involves by facilitating learning, or the achievement of skills,
knowledge, habits, beliefs and values. Education is considered as the golden ticket to a better life.
However, this golden ticket is not acquired by many young individuals, during the perfect age to
pursue higher education. At the preset era, students lack proper interest in the benefits of the
institutions that are surrounding them. Education has becoming less available to the general public;
the main reason behind this is the increased cost of higher education. This happens due to the
enormous reductions to funding colleges and universities.
Segregation in case of receiving education can never be logically justified as all human beings have
the right to obtain knowledge although economic differences might create a problem in respect of
the institution that they might join for receiving education .Higher education is a way to shape the
future of one individual and that of society. Higher education plays an important role in career
building of an individual. A university education is doubtlessly an essential instrument of
emancipation in contemporary life.
Methods
Teaching is considered as one of the main mechanism in educational planning. Teaching is also a
key factor in conducting educational plans. Despite of getting a good teaching, the outcomes are far
from ideal. There are several ways of obtaining knowledge other than following the discourse of

Current Research
Current research over student debt and its burden has allowed an insight and analyzation over the
government's role in higher education at the federal, state, and local level. Through data of
institution cost efficiency and inefficiency, tax exporting, and the backgrounds of student borrowers,
policymakers and can create a visual representation of the importance of state allocations towards
higher education.
Government matters. A study done by Sav (2016), explores the decreases in state and federal Pell
Grant funding for public colleges in the United States whose funding decreased from 32% to 23%
from 2004–2013. Sav's study concluded that state funding appropriations contributed significantly
to the higher education ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Second, it is crucial that the states, rather than the federal government solely, play a more concrete
role in reducing the burden for millions of student borrowers. Third, policymakers should take into
consideration the dynamics and backgrounds of the student body in higher education institutions
when considering appropriations.
Collective Themes
Several themes and elements are recurrent in this research of college affordability. Federalism
concerns add fuel to the debate of the role of government in higher education policymaking. Ethical,
equity, economic, and political issues arise that divide citizens between considering higher
education a public or a private good, whether it has economic benefits, and whether it is worth
taxpayer dollars. The themes are consistent through the perspectives of the history, media,
government enactments, public opinion, political parties, interest groups and research.
Federalism
The relationship between the national government and state governments has changed and expanded
immensely (Kraft & Furlong, 2015). How does the issue of rising tuition, high student loan
interests, and student debt detail federalism? The authority of each level of government is
questioned in education policy. How much power should the national government have over higher
education?
Constitutionally, the national government only has explicitly enumerated

Essay on “Higher Education Without Higher Interest Rates”
The current state of the economy has spurred a debate as to what type of education is worth the time
and study that students invest. Some contend that students should attain degrees in more quantitative
subjects, such as math and science. Others state that vocational degrees are best in this economy.
Personal views aside, a central tenet is clear–a college education, often complemented by
postgraduate education, is the reliable path to success for most Americans. That being said, there are
still several real–life obstacles that impede access to such an education. There are several, specific
public policy initiatives that can help alleviate these hindrances. In order for Americans to have
more job opportunities with higher wages, Congress ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In other words, higher education is valuable but expensive. Most would agree that higher education
encourages ingenuity and critical thinking–attributes which are valuable in any profession. Though
people like to cite Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg as not finishing college but finding once–in–a–
lifetime success, the rule remains that those individuals are the exception, not the rule. Having a
college degree makes attaining a higher paying job possible. Clearly higher education pays off, but
there are some people who do not have enough money to pay for college. Only thirty percent of
Americans have earned a college degree. This number does not seem staggering, but when
compared with college tuition debt to credit card debt, the results are stark. In general, Americans
have more college tuition debt than credit card debt (State of the Union). When considering an
average college graduate and his or her consumer/credit debt, it is easy to see why the student loan
burden is one that students find increasingly difficult to confront. This is worsened by the current
state of the economy, where educated men and women have difficulties finding jobs because of the
market. As a result, they are straddled with student loan debt. This debt, coupled with consumer debt
and dim job prospects, are a burden which can easily become overwhelming for the average 22 year
old (Federal Student Aid).

The Value Of Higher Education
Though Leonhardt acknowledges that college can cost an arm and a leg, as it may produce a
financial burden, respectfully argues that regardless of student debt, a person with a degree will still,
over a lifetime, benefit financially more than someone without a higher education. Leonhardt goes
on to argue that the lack of individuals pursuing a higher education is why the "pay gap" has
continued to multiply. Leonhardt contends a straightforward solution for the "inevitable" trend of
few individuals graduating from such institutions, as he goes onto say that "college is a no–brainer."
Leonhardt stresses that actual financial cost of a higher education is worthwhile as the value of a
higher education is what places and defines us society as he goes on to say "it's [a higher education]
the most reliable ticket to the middle class and beyond." It's not to say that a higher education is the
only set way to live a comfortable lifestyle, because there are people who are millionaires and even
trillionaires with no actual degree. A good example would be Steve Jobs, who dropped out of
college, yet still became co–founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc. and a
majority shareholder of Pixar. What are the chances of being the next Steve Jobs? It's possible, but
not likely; which is why higher education is fundamental to a higher paying job. Leonhardt
continues by insisting that the ones that aren't stressing higher education "are those with the luxury

Higher Education is Necessary
Higher education, it is vital for success, a better future, and the key to many opportunities. This has
been what we have been told our entire life, but is it true? Is higher education necessary? These are
the questions that pop into the heads of many college students every time they must write a paper or
have a hard test coming up. Is it really worth it? Should I stop? Then the answer to all these
questions come flying to their heads, and they continue writing those papers and study those
flashcards once more. Although many people do not think college is worth it, or necessary, it is
because it provides a higher income level, knowledge, and self– improvement.

With this higher pay they can enjoy a less stressful and a more comfortable life. With higher
education one can make more money.
Higher education not only provides higher income but also knowledge. In the article, "Top 20
Reasons why Education Is Important" it is stated that "The basic thing that you get from education
is knowledge. You get to know about various things ranging from mathematics to history, literature
to political science" (Khemka). The importance of this statement is the fact that education provides
knowledge. And with higher education comes even greater knowledge. The knowledge you receive
from education plays a great role in your future life. It can help you understand what is happening
around the world more cohesively. In high school you receive knowledge about economics, the US
government, and the human body which are later fine–tuned and greatly added to by higher
education. The knowledge received from higher education helps us understand our own
government, our rights, and today's society. As the intellectual reformer, philosopher, and champion
of modern science Francis Bacon said, "Knowledge is Power"( Simpson). He was one of the
greatest philosophers and contributors of today's society and he gained his knowledge and wisdom
from no other then, higher education. We should all take examples of great philosophers such as Sir
Bacon, and understand education is knowledge, and knowledge is power. Sir Bacon was from a

The Cost Of Higher Education
Over the past four decades, the costs of higher education has risen at a rate that surpasses the rate on
inflation. Students, parents, and policymakers are concern about the rapid increase. The literature
supports that there are multiple trends such as a decline in federal and state support as well as
outdated policies and practices that have contributed to continued rise. Thelin (2015) analyzed
Edwin Slosson's 1910 anthology on Great American Universities, which provided data on fourteen
prominent institutions of that era. They were both private and public institutions. He examined why
college costs so little a century ago. The data was compiled in 1908–1909, by the Carnegie

Since the recession, public colleges and university across the United States have increased tuition to
offset the decline in state funding (Mitchell, Palacious, and Leachman 2014). Tuition at four–year
public colleges has risen by 28 percent after adjusting for inflation. Over the past two decade, tuition
has increased faster than median income. The authors stated that federal student aid and tax credits
have increased, but not enough to cover the shortage of increased tuition costs. In fact, please note
that tuition only accounts for part of revenue losses from state funding reductions. Public
institutions have had to cut faculty positions, curriculum offerings, closed campuses, closed
computer laboratories, and reduced library services, etc. (Mitchell etal, 2014). The University of
Carolina, Chapel Hill cut 493 positions, 16,000 course seats, increased class sizes, computer
laboratories, and eliminated two distance education centers. Additionally, the literature indicates that
future jobs will require a more educated workforce, and adequate funding for higher education is
vital to keep tuition affordable and to maintain high quality public colleges and universities. Indeed,
states must invest in developing a skilled and diverse workforce to compete for jobs. The authors
also posit that policymakers must make sound budget decision to bring higher education back to
pre–recession levels. This may

Justification For Higher Education After analyzing William A. Henry III s In Defense of Elitism and

College is a Waste of Time and Money , it is clear that Henry s argument concerning the purpose of
an education is more rational than Bird s due to the fact that Henry supports his claims with credible
statistics, logical insight, and uses current real world scenarios. Bird, on the contrary, bases her
argument solely on manipulated statistics, overly dramatic claims, and ridiculously out–of–this–

As wasteful as it may seem, college graduates working in fields that don t even require a degree is
indeed a trend today. It reminds me of a close family friend of mine who graduated from the
University of California, Riverside in 2000 as a math major. Today he is working as a private
investigator for an insurance company. This job not only lacks the requirement of a four year college
degree, but can actually be obtained rather quickly by simply enrolling in a six–week training
program. It is certainly not fair to simply categorize my friend in Henry s group of mediocrities just
yet, but it is safe to say that he would have been better off not going to college in the first place. In
his case, Henry s claim that college may well be a credential without being a qualification (333) is
confirmed. While Henry makes his claims with regards to rationality, Bird attempts to undermine
the thinking of her readers by overdramatizing her claims and then trying to support them with
manipulated statistics. Her simple argument is that too many students are in college for the wrong
reasons and therefore they are wasting their time and money. Unfortunately, her approach and lines
of reasoning for various claims are not so simple. Bird expresses her feelings that she is
overwhelmed by the prevailing sadness on American campuses (324).

A college education. Many parents and even parents–to–be are bombarded with this goal,
sometimes before their child is even born. How will they save? What is the best way to save? How
much should they save? Magazines for new parents deal with this issue on a regular basis. Parents
are warned in American Baby, "Start early...Eighteen years from now...a college education will cost
close to $85,000 at a public university and just over $200,000 at a private institution." Parents are

Ancient Greeks pursued an education in order to be better citizens and because they valued the mind
and thinking. In an article in Change, Arthur Levine and Jeanette Cureton quote John Henry
Cardinal Newman who wrote The Idea of a University in the mid 1800's. "His ideal was a
residential community of students and teachers devoted to the intellect. To him a college was 'an
alma mater, knowing her children one by one, not a foundry, or a mint, or a treadmill.' " To
Newman, a university was a gathering–place for those who wanted to enrich their lives through
learning, not a place where students could be molded. Is this the case today? The New Jersey City
University states that a liberal arts curriculum will "provide students with the kind of knowledge
that will help them live a more rewarding life––one that is rich with meaning." Their College of Arts

"expand their perceptions and give them a firm foundation for living, working, and decision

The Value Of Higher Education
Is Higher Education Worth The Price? With the price of education skyrocketing, it is important to
know that education is the number one priority in order to advance future generations regardless of
cost. "As a critical behavior for business success, problem solving, or community engagement,
developing students' leadership capacities informs and impacts outcomes across higher education's
divergent purposes (Chunoo, Vivechkanand and Laura Osteen)." Therefore, higher education is
worth the price no matter how much it costs. It is important to note that in order to better ourselves
and our children we must educate them so that we can improve society as a whole. Without higher
education it would be nearly impossible for professionals to perform their best. We need higher
education in order to succeed and be the best that we can be. With higher education we can help our
generation develop the necessary skills to survive. "We believe that higher ed–ucation contributes to
the betterment of society by preparing individuals or a responsible civic life that has a commitment
to social change at its core (Chunoo, Vivechkanand, and Laura Osteen)". By helping our future and
current generation aim for a higher education we are helping them thrive as a society. Not only are
we helping them thrive but we are helping them become stronger and more cohesive as a whole. If
one aims for higher education one is aiming to become an active useful member of society. A

The Importance Of Higher Education
Students from around the world can come study and have access to these higher learning
institutions. As suppose to dating back to the Ancient Greece era when educational studies were for
those that were well prosperous citizens. In the United States today, education at a higher learning
horizon has been easily accessible which includes college and universities. Students are
unconcerned about the quality of the education and conceive to be a repetitive sequence for
universities to educate students on the same material on a year to year basis. It is not a about the
learning for this education system anymore, it is about getting your degree while graduating on time
to began a career profession in the real world, being what you called "street smart," and have a
negative outlook on what higher learning is in the world today.
The greater purpose of college or higher education is to ensure a career after graduation. There are
many statistics that show that, you earn and make more dollars with a college degree than a high
school diploma and much more suitable to ensure employment after obtaining a degree. Hrabowski
stated that, "College graduates are much more likely to be employed than those only with a high

The Cost of Higher Education Has Resulted in Extreme Student Loan
Debt, How Do We Reverse This Cycle?
During high school we are often told that higher education is essentially a precursor to achieving
success in the workforce, meaning that your success is dependent upon earning a degree. We are
also told that higher education is the key to "happiness" because it is clear that both a fulfilling and
lucrative career is a direct representation of success. Sometimes parents, teachers, and guidance
counselors forget to mention the tremendous cost of attending college. They almost never mention
the ongoing student loan debt bubble, its impact, or even how much tuition has risen. Odland
estimates that college tuition rates have surpassed the nations inflations rates by approximately
400% (College Costs Out of Control). Student debt is not only devastating the personal finances of
the average college graduate, it has long–lasting negative effects on the economy, and families of
those attending higher education institution. There's a universal agreement that student debt is an
ongoing issue, yet there has been little done to solve this problem. In most cases the cost of college
is significantly greater than the potential salary that can be expected after college (Ramsey, Why
Student Loan Debt is STUPID). Not many students can afford to pay the cost of college out of their
own pocket; tuition, books, supplies, living expenses, food, and transportation. It has been

The Importance Of Higher Education
Higher education is necessary to our society. Without it, the world would not be the same.
Universities all around the world are training students to prepare for various positions in various
fields. Personally, I am enjoying my first semester in higher education. However, there are plenty of
ways that it could improve. I believe that an emphasis on the well–being of students will improve all
other aspects of their university experiences. There are two particular issues that can be better dealt
with that students would greatly benefit from. By putting an emphasis on improving both the mental
health and the financial literacy of students, institutes of higher education could be changing both
themselves and their students for the better.
Mental health issues are orthodox among students of higher education. According to Therapy Today,
a journaling the United Kingdom, one thousand one hundred and eighty British university students
left their universities in the year two thousand and fifteen for reasons directly related to mental
health issues ("University Dropouts Rise Due to Mental Ill Health"). Five years earlier the number
of students dropping out for the same reason was three hundred and eighty. The number more than
tripled! This is a grave matter. Alas, it is intelligible; higher education is stressful. A first–year
college student typically has to adjust to being independent and self–sufficient for the first time, and
they usually do so after leaving their principal support groups. Furthermore, a college student has to
adjust to their new and demanding schedule while simultaneously creating a new social life. This
can be accomplished only by learning time management skills. High stress can lead to both anxiety
and depression, and depression can lead to suicide. According to the National Institute of Mental
Health, suicide is the second highest cause of death among people age fifteen to thirty–four, and in
people aged eighteen to twenty–five, the age of an undergraduate student, suicidal thoughts are
double the number of any other age group (National Institute of Mental Health). According to Indian
psychologist Vijay Mahadeorao Bhujade, a number of problems can arise from neglecting students'
mental health

An African Proverb once said "If you think education is expensive try ignorance." This statement
rings true today in relation to higher education. The importance of higher education cannot be
stressed enough. A longer and happier life are just two of the things college graduates have over non
college graduates. College graduates are more likely to have job satisfaction and security throughout
their lifetime. One must see college as an investment in themselves, which is definitely worth the
price.

On average college graduates live an amazing seven years longer than those without a college
degree. This is caused by a few factors. College graduates usually make healthier decisions which
prolong life. Also, college graduates usually face less stress about finances. Getting rid of stress is
always a good thing. Higher education and the jobs that go along with it usually exercise the brain.
There is a clear link between mental exercise and Alzheimer's prevention. Next, college graduates
usually can receive better healthcare due to increased finances. Those are some reasons why higher
education leads to a longer and happier life.
Higher education can bring job security and satisfaction. To an employer a college degree makes
one harder to replace. They also allow for one to move up within a company. Many promotions
within a company require higher education. Recessions are a part of life in the United States.
College graduates are less likely to lose their job during a recession. College are also more likely to
enjoy their jobs for a number of reasons. One big reason is that college graduates are more likely to
receive benefits from their employer. Health insurance benefits can save a family $393 per person
per month. Also, many college graduates receive travel incentives from their jobs. It can be a great
motivation to perform at work. It is clear, that job security and job satisfact are a benefits of higher

Over the course of a student's education they are told by teachers, counselors, and family members
that college is the way to success. Students are told that college is the way to getting a stable job
which leads to a stable life. The price of a higher education is very high and continues to increase.
An average public in–state college tuition in 1997–1998 was around 3,200 dollars a year. This
school year the average public in–state tuition has risen to 10,700. The problem is that students are
being told that college is a necessity, but the price continues to rise, making it difficult for students
to get a higher education. The evolution of society and industry has made the attainment of a college
degree less attainable or necessary than in the past.
Higher level education has been made to look like a necessity. Most high school students are
expected to go to a college or university after they graduate. As stated in an online article, "Close to
90 percent of today's high–school graduates are expected to attend college at some point in young
adulthood." (Supiano par. 1). This article also stated that most adults with children want their kids to
go to college (Supiano). Students should have different options to choose from and not be pressured
into committing to such a big decision. There are other options and students should be exposed to
them because they might find something they feel more comfortable with and that they might enjoy

The Evolution Of Higher Education
The Evolution of Higher Education Higher education has continued to evolve just as society has in
its accessibility and purpose in surviving its students. In Mark Edmundson's On the uses of a liberal
education: 1. as lite entertainment for bored college students, he discusses how consumer culture has
turned every aspect of higher education into a buyer's market which students feed into. William
Deresiewicz's The Neoliberal Arts: How college sold its should to the market expands on this idea
from the 90's through a modern interpretation. Deresiewicz uses the term neoliberalism to discuss
how universities are at fault for succumbing to societal influences of ideals based on monetary
value. Deresiewicz's definition of neoliberalism expands on Edmundson's prior ideas of consumer
culture, yet challenges the latter in the role of college students in a market–based university culture.
When Deresiewicz speaks of neoliberalism, it is a critique of the modern culture and how it affects
the priorities of higher education in this age. He states that, "Neoliberalism is an ideology that
reduces all values to money values... The purpose of education in a neoliberal age is to produce
producers" (Deresiewicz 3). In this sense, neoliberalism is about creating students, teachers, and
effectively an educational market, that will continue to influence society into creating more
individuals focused on keeping the wheel of consumerism turning. This process will continue to

Higher education in the U.S. has grown to become a vast enterprise comprising some 7,253 colleges
and universities, 17.3 million students, 1.5 million faculty and staff members, and aggregate annual
expenditures exceeding 515 million dollars (National Center for Education Statistics, 2016).
According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2016), in fall of 2014, undergraduate
enrollment saw an increase of 31 percent increase from 2000, when enrollment was 13.2 million
students. Interestingly enough, while total undergraduate enrollment increased by 37 percent
between 2000 and 2010, enrollment decreased by four percent between 2010 and 2014.
Furthermore, of the total 17.3 million students, 10.6 million were enrolled in four–year institutions,
with the remaining 6.7 million enrolled in two–year institutions. To accommodate student
enrollment, enrollment increased by 44 percent in four–year institutions and by 29 percent in two–

students enrolled, 56 percent were White, 17 percent were Hispanic, 14 percent were Black, six
percent were Asian, and the remaining seven percent were American Indian/Alaska Native or

For most high school seniors the cost of higher education may be a daily or at least. It is an even a
concern in that a group of students, who all share a common, concern, around the same age, but with
no reliable income. Each one is making a huge investment in their future, but in majority of cases
adding more and more debt to their lifestyles. Though majority of students receive financial aid, the
amount of debt which tuition builds is beyond stressing. For some students relying on their family
can help pay the tab. Still, most students have loans and debts in their own name. So many different
things make up our tuition, none being cheap. Now a day's college is about investing your own
money and time in order to receive the best education out there, in the outcome receiving the job of
your dreams. This investment could also bring you a life of debt. Are all these costs truly necessary?
Education in America is expensive, and much of the expense can be reevaluated significantly
Tuition prices are usually the first thing in which comes to mind when you begin planning for
college. Tuition is the largest component of the tab when you are planning on attending a university.
Tuition is charged by colleges for the enrollments of a student. The average tuition cost for a private,
for a year of school is $28,500 per year. This is only being for tuition which could total about
$120,000 over a 4 year degree. A starting salary for a recent college graduate is about $50,000.

The Importance Of Higher Education
Colleges and Universities are institutions of higher learning. These institutions are continuously
changing and evolving as means for preparing their students for the ever changing and evolving
world. The institutions' curriculums and courses that are offered to the students are reflections of
those changes. Higher learning institution's graduate students will learn how to conduct research
into new theories, conduct experiments that have never been done and analyze social changes for
the betterment of all. Our technological and economic growth is dependent on what types of
students the universities and colleges are producing. This is one of the vital aspects of the
importance of a higher education. I have always felt that I was destined to attend a higher learning
institution. My life experiences and education exposure prior to me attending a higher learning
institution seem to be a teaser as to what I can experience and discover at such institution. I also felt
that an education at such institutions is more important than then the education I obtained in high
school in regards to what I want to do with my life. I am not discounting the value of a high school
education. In fact, I strongly feel it is necessary for all. For clarification, in high school, I had a
general idea as to what career path I wanted to pursue. But, at a higher learning institution, I was
able to define my career path and plot a course to achieve its goals. The education that you

Importance Of Higher Education For Success

  • 1. The Importance Of Higher Education During high school, many students begin to debate the significance of a higher education and question the importance of obtaining a college degree. However, attaining a college education offers opportunities for graduates that can not be received without it. Unlike previous generations, students who graduate high school today are not able to acquire the several well–paying jobs that were once offered. Today, graduating college compares to the importance of graduating high school decades ago. America has turned into an economy built on knowledge, and a higher education continues to be one of the greatest investments one can make for a successful future, "In today's economy, higher education is no longer a luxury for the privileged few, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another side of the debate proposes that the best way to increase college affordability is through improving access to financial aid. Students need more and better financial aid to keep up with the rising costs of college. Heavy debt and incompletion of degrees due to financial reasons may be reduced if sufficient financial aid programs are established. Efforts should be aimed at simplifying the complex financial aid application form. Overall, if colleges reevaluate their policies to make higher education more affordable, they will save students and taxpayers millions of dollars without undermining their academic goals. One side of the debate argues that in order to make college more affordable, the government should introduce different ways to help students gain free college credits through college level learning online. They argue that there are plenty of online courseware available at no cost, but that getting credit for completing the free courses is too difficult. They want the government to make tests available free of cost for mandatory introduction college courses and for colleges to accept financial aid funds to pay for the credits earned this way. This could allow a student to complete up to one year of higher level education with no cost at an accommodating self–paced structure. The forgoing policies would be beneficial as they may encourage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Religion In Higher Education Introduction/ Historical significance Throughout the years there's been a tremendous change in the collegiate way of living. The American college life as we know it simulated the swinging of a pendulum in a deep curve. In the colonial days practices such as loco parentis was prevalent in higher education institutions. Religion was also a huge part in higher education as well as campus life. Extracurricular activities came to the surface as students began to form their own organizations and identities. The integration of extracurricular activities into academic programs was quite the challenge in the early colonial days. Many leaders of higher education began to have a change of mind concerning the expansion of extracurricular activities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Has it been restored? Although higher education institutions are now considered secular, this was not the case in the early colonial age. Jacobsen and Jacobsen (2012) mentioned that the three stages of campus religion in the history of American higher education could presumably be split into the following three stages: Protestant, Privatized and Multiform (p.2). At the time of the Protestant age, religion and morality (character formation) were paramount to higher education institutions. At the time of the Privatized age, religion was commonly shifted into the private scope of personal choice as learning and teaching began to target impartiality and practicality. The third section (Multiform) is the current age we live in. In this current age there are many sorts of religions that are prominent in cultural discourse. Jacobsen and Jacobsen (2012) observed that, "religion's "return" has been facilitated by several broad developments within higher education, including new emphases on multiculturalism, professional studies, and student–centered ... • 3. The Internationalisation Of Higher Education The internationalisation of Higher Education is a mainstream focus, however a review of the literature highlights issues of concerns to some scholars and researchers. Callan (2006) states that "a reading of the literature on the internationalisation, both European and world–wide (particularly North America) shows that.... the concept has been understood and applied in a highly variable fashion" (Callan,2006, p. 16). Kehm and Teichler (2007) concur, postulating that the internationalisation of HE is fraught 'with strong political undercurrents' embracing transnational and off–shore campuses and issues of cultural diversity and quality control (Kehm and Teichler, 2007, p. 261). Careful analysis of the literature would seem to support Knight's view that "Internationalisation is changing the world of Higher Education and globalisation is changing the world of internationalisation" (Knight,2004, p.5). Welch (2002) looks at the historical and economic background on globalisation and links this to the phenomenon of internationalisation of higher education. He summarises the works of authors including Sklair, Harvey and Giddens. He looks at the rationales that have been utilised to justify the internationalisation of HE, including Knights' taxonomy of political, economic and academic rationales. Welch also examines international student flows, as well as the extent to which internationalisation impacts on Australian universities. He examines the growth of the international student ... • 4. The Education Of Higher Education Institutions of higher learning compete amongst each other, enabling them to focus on subjects that do not pertain to education. The education system has become more of a business organization, making learning their second priority and further shifting their focus from the quality of education and students to the quantity of students and the popularity of their institution. The economy of the country has also had a big impact on shaping universities operating systems. American modern economy is based on knowledge, thus there is an increasing high demand for higher education. Higher education has become a market system, and universities have to change their traditional structure in order to become a valuable competitor; although education is in demand, the supply of quality in education is decreasing. Competition among traditional universities and the increase of for–profit schools have diminished the value of higher education. Educational instiutions are evolving into businesses and primarily focusing on the profit aspect.Education is a very valuable business, it creates a lot of free cash flow and there is a high rate of educational needs that continue to grow. In the essay"The Sandbox Experiment" , by Peter Sacks, the author makes an argument that professors are placed in situations where they are forced to moderate their course material in order to please their students(Sacks 1–2). Sacks conducts the "Sandbox experiment" which demonstrated how professors change their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Importance Of Higher Education Education is a key to a better and successful life. According to the article, "Why is higher education is important" by Dr. Heather Allen, defines that "higher education is education provided by universities, college, and other institutions that award academic degrees. Higher education includes both the undergraduate (i.e., college) and the graduate (or postgraduate) levels. Higher education includes most professional education and is strongly vocationally or professionally oriented. "Hence, higher education makes individuals much more intelligent than what they would be with just a high school education. The more intelligent an individual is, the better quality of life they are likely to have. Higher education systems can very valuable because they provide individuals with life skills that are essential to being successful in life. While studying at a higher education system, one is forced to develop to essential time management skills much more so than at the high school level. With the time needed for studying, attending classes, completing homework, so one needs to manage their time in order to avoid falling out. These time management skills help individuals later on in life. Another important life skill that individuals who attend higher education systems gain is money management skills. • 6. Institutions Of Higher Learning. An Institution Of Higher Institutions of higher learning An institution of higher learning is defined as a place that offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs (Barrow, Brock, & Rouse, 2013). In the United States they date back to before the American Revolution, and have continually adapted to meet the needs of learners (Barrow, Brock, & Rouse, 2013). For example, institutions of higher learning are always incorporating new programs and working towards creating a quality learning environment. In the 21st century institutions of higher learning have moved in the direction of making a higher education more available and now have the ability to reach local learners and learners on the other side of the world (Alexey, 2016). While the College of William and Mary focused on preparing learners for ordination into the Church of England, they were the first institution of higher learning to have full time faculty. Harvard University maintained a small amount of faculty that were well known for their knowledge, and by 1782 added medical studies (Harvard University, 2016). Harvard University is also well known for buildings originally built in the 18th century that are still standing. For example, Massachusetts Hall, built in 1720 and Wadsworth House build in 1726 (Harvard University, 2016). Buildings built during the 17th century that did not survive and have their original locations marked with brass markers. The College of William and Mary is known for the Sir Christopher Wren Building, which is the oldest college building still standing (Fishman, 2015). During the 19th century, Harvard University added additional programs and celebrated its bicentennial. Harvard's 15th President Josiah Quincy displayed a new university shield with the motto "Veritas" at the universities 200th birthday celebration, the shield was officially adopted in 1843 (Christen, 2013). Quincy remained the university 's president from 1829 to 1845, during a time when teaching methods evolved and a larger variety of courses became available. • 7. Purpose of Higher Education Louis Menand, a professor of English and American literature at Harvard University, presented three different theories for the purpose of higher education in The New Yorker's article named, Live and Learn: Why We Have College. Menand (2011) claims that the reasons for a college education are meritocratic, democratic, and vocational. These theories are great models for the purpose of higher education in our culture at different points in our history. Our colleges and universities conduct instruction with clear and definite intentions. The institutions of higher education adopt certain techniques designed to serve specific goals. These methods evolve with time and shape the way that generations think and reason. The government's influence in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The federal government stayed on the sidelines during this time, even though reports warned that without education reform, the United States could lose its dominance in the global economy. However, the government did not show any significant interest in the battles about the best form of education during this decade. In 2006, the Secretary of Education, Margaret Spellings, revived the need to review the state of higher education in the United States. The report, A Test of Leadership: Charting the Future of US Higher Education, laid the foundation for the current purpose of higher education in our nation. The report implied that the institutions must listen to capitalism instead of democracy. Most of the report emphasized on how the industry complained about under–prepared graduates that lacked communication and mathematical skills. The report clearly states, "we want a world–class higher education system that creates knowledge, contributes to economic prosperity and global competitiveness, and empowers citizens" (as cited by Hutcheson, 2011). Additionally, the commission recommended that everyone should complete some sort of higher education, like vocational training or an associate degree, to contribute to the goal of global competitiveness. That recommendation supports the projection of the market's needs for workers with some level of post– secondary training in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Future of Higher Education Higher education is generally referring to any form of education after secondary education. The industry of higher education has been established already for almost several centuries, and in contemporary times, this industry is indeed going to experience modifications on how the industry will function and continue on. The Princeton Review was established in 1981, and their main mission of test–preparation, tutoring services, and higher education admission counseling have remained constant throughout these years (The Princeton Review). But due to the many changing factors in the contemporary society, some changes must be made on the rising tuition costs and on an unprepared workforce, as based on Time Magazine (Meacham). Also, due to the emergence of the Internet, online higher education courses also plays a major role in the future of higher education. One of the major changes that should be implemented into the Princeton Review is to lower the costs that are spent on entering higher education. According to the College Board, statistics have shown that the price of college has risen exponentially from 1973 to 2014, where an average college education in a private school costs around $30,000 USD compared to around $10,000 USD in 1973. Also in a public school, the costs rose to around $8,000 USD in 2014 compared to $2,000 USD in 1973 (College Board). Mattie (2007) asserts "risk can be defined as any issue that impacts an institution's ability to meet its objectives" (p. 3). Issues like sexual harassment, student discipline, free speech, academic misconduct, tenure, race and religion are risk but how they are managed can impact institutions. This review will examine Carol L. J. Hustoles 2012 dissertation Through the Eyes of Higher Education Attorneys: How Department Chairs Are Navigating the Waters of Legal Issues and Risk Management. The dissertation discussed what institutional risk management is and the role of department chairs in relation to legal issues as well as their role ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Based on some of the findings from the study, it is suggested that institutions should: be proactively providing training for their department chairs on legal and risk management issues while involving legal counsel in training, increase the amount of training chairpersons receive, continuously involve campus attorneys in issues that arise, and chairs should become familiar with the provisions in collective bargaining. The study conducted by Hustoles provides great insight into how attorneys view the role and performance of administrators. Although risk management is the task of everyone on campus, attorneys have to deal with all legal issues on campus. Hustoles (2012) study also sought to fill in the literature gap as there is no literature that discusses the attorneys view in risk management. According to Hustoles this is the only study that offers that data. The study can be beneficial to institutions as they train administrators to deal with risk ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Importance Of Higher Education Although there are many students who participate in higher education like college, it is not a universal normality. Even so, college is universally credited as the place that helps people reach their definition of success. College is a step in the right direction as many people will note. It is a place that educates students in a specific field they hope to make a career out of. College has a stigma though, it is thought of as a place that produces robots of society; highly educated, skilled, and very ambitious people. College should not be seen as the manufacturer of robots, it should be thought of as the place students go to learn how to be better unique individuals who can unify to help make the world a better place. It might sound like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The reason why critical thinking is so important in college, is because it helps build a strong foundation and mindset that leads to success. "The heartbeat of critical thinking is the longing to know–to understand how life works," (bell hooks). This quote shows the motives behind critical thinking, wanting to know how life works. Life involves many different areas, from people, animals, nature, and more. It should also be noted that when more people want to know how the world works, those people will be more inclined to make rational, reasonable, and educated decisions. Students learn about the who, what, when, where, and why because it helps them in life when considering which choices to make. Although the purpose of creating opportunities and providing knowledge is very important, college should be about much more than that. Education is a tricky topic to speak about in terms of purpose. While college is recognized for the education that helps students build careers, it is not focusing on an important topic, respect. While respect may seem like a very simple concept, saying please, excuse me, and thank you, it goes deep beyond those surface points. Respect comes into play when students have graduated college. Many people will hold the power of their diploma as a weapon against those who do not have one themselves. As mentioned before, college is not accessible to everyone, and it is not because these ... • 12. The Education Of Higher Education The idea of Higher Education is a crucial thread in the fabric of this nation, woven through our culture, beliefs and politics. The best of American Higher Education outstrips any others in the world and the output of American Institutions is unparalleled. To stay competitive and expand the current education horizon, different types of institutions, evolve and prioritize differently to ensure the best education quality to targeted students. However, today Higher Education is facing more challenges and critiques than at any other point in history. Indeed, when encountering the unavoidable struggle between pleasing students and following government regulations, colleges start to rouse from their academic wish–fulfillment fantasies and realize that the idea of Higher Education does not swab away the realism of this materialistic world: higher education cannot simply satisfy everyone. Three distinctive educational models, public universities, non–profit private universities and for–profit universities, demonstrate the complex dynamic among schools, government and students. Although the three educational models share different education philosophy and serve multiple objectives, they all have the same purpose in the end: to help one realize his or her own unique potential in order to manage the diversity of expectations and challenges one would face in the society. As we know, each educational model strives to provide the best education to its students with the resources it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Is Higher Education Worth It? Is Higher Education Worth It? When young adults finish high school they are driven to enroll into a higher education program. With the constant talks of soaring tuition costs, in addition to the massive student loan debt, taking this step can be worrisome. Reyna Gobel, a journalist on financing college and repaying student debt, states. "It's easy to stop believing that a college education is worth it when the nation has over a trillion dollars in debt, but college graduates still earn more over a lifetime than those without a degree. Plus, they're more employable." More than three–quarters of college graduates agree that higher education is indeed still worth the cost. Additional education in a field you're passionate about will drive your success, making education an invaluable asset. Unfortunately, the increase in student loan debt has been on the rise increasing a staggering 91% from 2003 till 2012. This is leaving the majority of graduates with an average total debt of around $21,326 according to (Meta Brown and Sydnee Caldwell). Keep in mind these numbers are pertaining to a four–year degree. This can be incredibly frightening for numerous people. Nevertheless, this should not deter you from obtaining the education you seek. Although it seems as if the founding of Harvard and other colleges during the Colonial Era were beneficial to the larger society, it seems as if these colleges contributed to higher education in the United States manifesting as a private good. Despite the number of opportunities Harvard and other colonial colleges had on American society, these institutions further divided the elite from the rest of society, since all students came from wealthy families. In fact, soon after the founding of Harvard and other colonial colleges, being educated was tantamount to being elite (Marine, 2017). Furthermore, acceptance into these institutions was limited to White men, who were required to have prior knowledge of both Latin and Greek (Bastedo et al, 2016). With early United States higher education serving such a limited clientele, going to college was clearly not on the minds of most Americans. However, through the signing of the Morrill Land–Grant Colleges Act by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862, college could become a reality for more Americans (Loss 2012; Widmer, 2015). Universities all around the world are training students to prepare for various positions in various fields. Personally, I am enjoying my first semester in higher education. However, there are plenty of ways that it could improve. I believe that an emphasis on the well–being of students will improve all other aspects of their university experiences. There are two particular issues that can be better dealt with that students would greatly benefit from. By putting an emphasis on improving both the mental health and the financial literacy of students, institutes of higher education could be changing both themselves and their students for the better. Mental health issues are orthodox among students of higher education. According to Therapy Today, a journaling the United Kingdom, one thousand one hundred and eighty British university students left their universities in the year two thousand and fifteen for reasons directly related to mental health issues ("University Dropouts Rise Due to Mental Ill Health"). Five years earlier the number of students dropping out for the same reason was three hundred and eighty. The number more than tripled! This is a grave matter. Alas, it is intelligible; higher education is stressful. A first–year college student typically has to adjust to being independent and self–sufficient for the first time, and they usually do so after leaving their principal support groups. Furthermore, a college student has to adjust to their new and demanding schedule while simultaneously creating a new social life. This can be accomplished only by learning time management skills. High stress can lead to both anxiety and depression, and depression can lead to suicide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, suicide is the second highest cause of death among people age fifteen to thirty–four, and in people aged eighteen to twenty–five, the age of an undergraduate student, suicidal thoughts are double the number of any other age group (National Institute of Mental Health).
