this was a perfect opportunity for active learning," Dr. Van Fleet » Public Reiations Staff
said.
According to Dr. Van Fleet, the project has gained even more weight News Publications
in the last two years since a course in Evidence Informed Practice
was introduced into the T3 chiropractic curriculum. "In this class, the » Nort.!:lwest~m_ToQgy:

Students prepare for the project by studying the defense

Dr. Van Fleet said. In addition, students get to research the topic of
their choice. "I often hear that many students like the project ~ krnartinCiiJnwhealth.edu
because they can live out their creative side," Dr. Van Fleet said.
James Jessen, T4 chiropractic student in the Immunology and
Clinical Microbiology class, did his project on omega-3 and its effects
on Multiple Sclerosis. "The main reason we chose to research this
topic was because a couple of members in our group, myself
included, have friends or family members that are diagnosed with
MS," Jessen said. "We wanted to learn about the disease and how to
help people with it in a holistic manner, if at all possible."
After doing research, Jessen's said his group found very promising
evidence that omega-3's can help reduce the symptoms and even
slow the progression of MS.
According to Jessen, omega-3's are a commonly suggested
supplement by chiropractors because of their anti-inflammatory
properties. "Learning more about the properties of omega-3's is
going to help us treat patients in the future when we become
doctors." Jessen said. "We were really excited to present on it."
