In 1835 in Margate, England, a mysterious Shell Grotto was discovered when a boy fell down a hole in his family's garden. When his father James Newlove pulled him out, the boy described the amazing sight of a cave built entirely of millions of seashells. Newlove explored the grotto further and found an altar built of shell mosaics. To this day the original purpose of the Shell Grotto remains a mystery, though some theories suggest it was once a temple or meeting place for a religious sect. It remains a one-of-a-kind tourist attraction in England, though its condition is deteriorating.
