Mental Attitude: Male Memory Performance Declines Faster with Age! Though brain shrinkage occurs with age, it appears
that brain volume in the areas of the brain that concern memory tend to decrease at a faster rate in men starting at around age 40.
Experts suspect that lower rates of vascular disease among women may contribute to their superior brain health as they enter
their later years. JAMA Neurology, March 2015
Health Alert: Body Mass Index Linked to Colorectal Cancer Prognosis! A meta-analysis of 508 studies involving nearly
59,000 patients found that a patient's body mass index (BMI) score at the time of colorectal cancer diagnosis greatly influences
their odds of surviving the disease. In particular, obese patients (BMI over 30) appear to have a 22% greater risk of cancer-
related mortality and a 25% greater risk for premature death than those with a normal body mass index score in the 18.5-24.9
range. One the other hand, underweight patients (BMI under 18.5) have a 63% greater chance of premature death when
compared to individuals with a normal BMI score. PLOS ONE, March 2015
Diet: Folic Acid May Reduce Stroke Risk in People with Hypertension. Chinese researchers have found that folic acid may
help reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure. The study tracked more than 20,000 adults with high blood
pressure over four years. Investigators found that participants who randomly received folic acid along with their blood pressure
medication had a 21% lower risk of stroke than those taking blood pressure medication alone during the course of the study. Dr.
Suzanne Steinbaum, a preventive cardiologist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City adds, "If all that is required to prevent
the greatest health threat worldwide is a vitamin, then we need to consider checking patients' blood levels of folic acid and
supplementing if needed." Journal of the American Medical Association, March 2015
Exercise: Resistance Training May Improve Flexibility in Older Women. Fifty-three women performed 10 to 15 repetitions
of eight resistance exercises regularly over a 12-week period. At the conclusion of the study, investigators noted significant
improvements in both neck extension and hip flexion flexibility among the participants.
Clinical Innervations In Aging, March 2015
Chiropractic: What Types of Job Activities Increase Back Pain Risk? Compared with young workers in jobs with low
physical demands, those with jobs that include either repetitive asymmetric movements or heavy vibration exposure are 80%
more at risk for both upper and lower back pain. Interestingly, young workers whose jobs involve sitting for most of the day
have a 56% greater risk for back pain than workers with low physically demanding jobs that keep them on their feet.
Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment, & Health, March 2015
Wellness/Prevention: Increased Screening Could Cut Annual Colon Cancer Deaths by 21,000. Currently, only 58% of
Americans aged 50-75 undergo screenings for colon cancer. According to a new report, increasing older adults’ screening rates
to 80% by 2018 could lead to 21,000 fewer deaths from the disease each year by 2030. Researcher Dr. Richard Wender adds,
"The barriers to increasing colorectal cancer screening in the United States are significant and numerous… But this study shows
that investing in efforts to clear these hurdles will result in a major cancer prevention success." Cancer, March 2015
