Ecological Footprint Quiz Analysis
After taking the Ecological Footprint Quiz, it was calculated that we would need 4.9 earths if everyone lived my lifestyle. This is fairly congruent
with the American average of 5 earths. While I know that my life style is not sustainable, it is very easy to lose track of just how unsustainable the
average American life is. According to the pie chart breakdown, 48% of my ecologic impact is in "services" area. In further researching information
about this, I found that these services are not variable in the calculator; everyone taking the quiz has a portion of their nation's "services" footprint
simply due to living in that country. As is described on the website, "service areas include (but are not limited to) health care, entertainment,
restaurants, real estate, legal services, government and the military" (Global Footprint Calculator, 2015). It is interesting that the government services
that I may or may not take part of are included in my footprint simply because I live in the United States. I suppose that one way I can lower my
ecological footprint is simply by moving to a different country.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I spend eight to ten hours of my day at a desk typing on a computer and speaking on the phone. If the power were to go out, there would be no work for
me to do. Even when I leave work, I am usually tied to my phone or laptop completing schoolwork or browsing social media. In many ways, my
lifestyle is centered around our available energy sources. Based on this quiz, I use about 18.3 global acres of earth's productive area with an
expenditure of about 18.9 tons of carbon dioxide on average. It seems that energy land is the production area responsible for the majority of my carbon

Ecological Footprint In Canada
Introduction In order to preserve Canada's natural capital, it is imperative to improve Canada's ecological footprint. A country's ecological footprint
consists of that country's impact on their environment via their use of resources2. Canada has a small population which results in a much lower
ecological footprint than countries with bigger populations¬6. Canada's total ecological footprint is 224 global hectares (gha)6. This is comparable to
the United States with a total ecological footprint of 2.3 billion gha, China with 2.9 billion gha and India with 1.1 billion gha6. This does not mean that
Canada is better at preserving natural capital than these other countries6. Canada's per capita ecological footprint is 6.4gha6. The University of ... Show

One of the largest contributors to a high ecological footprint is related to personal transportation and the construction, maintenance and operations of
buildings3. When more people are living in an area, the amount of energy and transportation needed decreases and so does the area's ecological
footprint3. This occurs because as walking increases, the amount of personal driving decreases.
Another way Vancouver is working to reduce its ecological footprint is by protecting land in the "Green Zone"7. About 60% of the region's land is
protected7. This includes agricultural land, watersheds, and natural and recreational areas7. These "Green Zones" will limit access and help preserve
the region's natural capital.
The David Suzuki Foundation proposed a South Coast Conservation Program in order to "conserve and restore at risk species and ecosystems on the
British Columbia South Coast"9. The projects main focus is to preserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity9. These are essential components in
improving natural capital. The Emily Carr University of Art in Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver joined forces with The David Suzuki Foundation
(DSF)10. Their goal was an to provide a natural capital application as an educational tool to provide data on natural capital have it more readily

What Is Your Overall Impact On Your Ecological Footprint
An ecological footprint is your overall impact on the environment based on the resources that you use. The resources that you use will give an
estimate to determine the area that is needed to support your lifestyle. Typically a person in a modern society that is industrialized can have a
bigger ecological footprint than a person in a society that is not as developed and where certain resources have not reached. After taking the quiz
my overall footprint was 4.6 planet earths. It surprised me very much because when I first went on the website I took the basic quiz first just to
get an idea of what the point of the test was, and I got a total of 5 planet earths. Once I was done I thought for sure that I would get a lot less if I had
to put in details, so I answered everything honestly and it only decreased by .4 planets. I was also surprised because for a few questions my answers
were "infrequently", or "occasionally" which I thought would help.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The lowest was a tie between mobility and shelter which both came in at 10%. I think the practices that had the greatest impact were the questions
about electricity amount and gas amount. Although in a city like Philadelphia where you obviously use more gas in the winter for heating purposes
and electricity in the summer for cooling purposes, the answers to those questions can differ by season. I think the other habit that might have increased
my footprint was the amount of packaged and non–locally grown foods that I consume. I selected the answer that mentions the can of ravioli with the
salad as a supplement. I do cook regularly, but everything is packaged or bought at a supermarket where the food is shipped from other parts. Even
the salads that I do eat are packaged and/or

Personal Ecological Footprint
An ecological footprint is the amount of Earth's resources that humans use in terms of how much land is required to produce those resources. By
this equation, people are currently using 1.5 times as much resources as the Earth can sustain (GFN). Before calculating my personal ecological
footprint, I predicted that mine would be somewhat less than the average American because I try to make sustainable choices in my everyday
actions. I walk everywhere with the occasional exception of riding a bus for short distances, try to conserve energy, and recycle as often as I can,
however, I eat a significant amount of animal products and processed foods. I also predicted that because I live in a highly developed nation, my
impact would be much greater... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The amount of resources humans currently use is far greater than the Earth can support, and eventually the finite sources of energy such as coal, gas,
and oil will run out. Even renewable resources such as trees and farming land are being depleted at a faster rate than they can be naturally replenished.
The only way that the Earth's resources can continue to support the growing human population is if we attempt to reduce our ecological footprint, and
there are several ways to go about this task. For one, people can find sustainable methods of fulfilling their needs for things like energy and food.
Instead of using so much land for taking care of livestock and growing feed, farms can focus on growing vegetables for humans which use much
less energy and water. People will have to eat less meat and purchase food that was grown locally to reduce transportation costs. Forests, farmland,
and fisheries need to be used in a more sustainable manner so that they are not depleted before they can be replenished. We could also reduce our
footprint by making use of cleaner, alternative sources of energy like wind and solar power instead of non–renewable ones like gas and oil that will
soon run out. Although it is not practical for everyone to stop driving cars and flying, newly manufactured cars should be built as fuel efficient as
possible or be able to be

Through the ecological footprint experiment I conducted, I realized that if everybody were to live in this manner, we would be in need of 6.13 earths.
This is the amount of the land's ecosystem habitat that the human race today would require in order to survive sustainably (Dunn, 2008). The online
ecological footprint calculator is a very innovative and informative application that poses great benefit to the society. The ecological footprint calculator
calculates the amount of inputs and outputs of an individual's lifestyle in effect of the natural resources within their region of habitat. This
consequently enables for a self–assessment at the individual level, where one can follow specific measures to reduce their ecological footprint to ...

These measures are inclusive of aspects such as the consumption of a healthy diet, estimating one's exact consumption requirements for a day, and
investing in food storage for future use measures such as freezing of food amongst others.
The goods and services footprint level was also calculated to be at a high. This project on my nature of consumption of goods and services within
my general day. It projects that in use of goods and services, my behavior is one that includes a lot of wastage. The best reversal measures of this
would be to practice restrained sustainable use of goods and services. This includes aspects such as choosing quality fabric clothes to reduce the rate
of my buying and throwing away of old clothes; and the same projected to other goods and services.
The lowest of my ecological footprint was from my housing footprint. This means that the nature of my interrelation of housing is sustainable. This
can be related to the fact that I have been living in one house with other members of my family. The house is medium sized and all rooms are full
except one.
The experiment also provided for a projection of my footprints share in the different biomes. The largest share was with forestland footprint, then
pastureland footprint, followed by marine fisheries footprint, and finally the cropland footprint. These shared biomes establish the level of effect that
my ecological footprint has on the different

The Ecological Footprint Of The Human Race
The ecological footprint of the human race is only getting bigger and bigger as our population steadily increases. It is estimated that our population
grows 1.1% each year and it doesn 't show a trace of slowing down (who.int). We have all hopefully heard the phrase "reduce, reuse, and recycle." This
phrase alone could help us gradually reduce our ecological footprint, but many poor countries don 't have governing systems that takes in and sorts
plastic or paper products. Some environmentalists say that unless something drastically changes, humans are doomed in the future because of lack of
resources. Some say that by then, humans will have sufficient technology to sustain ourselves and our large resource consuming population.
I think most people can agree that if we all change our mindset and governments work together to solve the problem, there can be drastic improvements.
As stated from greenliving.com, "An increase in population size makes excessive demands on natural resources, and increases the demand on
agriculture and livestock." Overall, there are many negative impacts associated with population explosion. Some environmentalists believe that the
human race will reach its carrying capacity relatively soon and our population will plummet. I beg to differ because I think that humans will find a
way to solve the population problem before disasters arrive. The most efficient and easy way to solve the problem is very controversial. In The

Opportunities And Barriers Of Sustainability
Opportunities and Barriers to Sustainability
In order to be an integral part in saving the Earth's environment and ensuring resources for future generations, the way individuals live needs to
change. Being fortunate enough to reside in one of the nation's most developed countries, I wanted to make sure the way I have been living has
been meeting the standards set by sustainable living. Using the overall environmental footprint provided by Global Footprint Network, I was able to
pinpoint the areas in my life that needed to improve in order for me to be more sustainable. I chose to use this Footprint calculator because it gives
you a breakdown on how many resources from the planet are needed in order to provide for your living standards. Once you have input the
information, the calculator provides a general ecological footprint explanation and gives real case scenarios in which you can do to reduce it. The
results for my footprint were as follows: If everyone were to live the way I do, we would need 5.3 planet earths to provide enough resources. It
would take 23.6 global acres of land for energy production, which would emit 23.6 tons of carbon dioxide, and the biggest impacts on my personal
footprint included 36 percent of services, 21 percent food and 19 percent mobility.
Clearly, my desires for comfort, mobility and relief from labor has led me to make impractical decision making. One of the benefits of the Footprint
Calculator is that creates what if scenarios, that

Earth Day Is An Annual Events That Happen
Earth Day is an annual events that happen on April 22th in every year. It is a mark in the history, also the environment field. On April 22th, 1970, it
woke everyone that human need to protect the environment they are living today (The History of Earth Day | Earth Day Network). This brought the
caution to people that we need to aware the environmental concerns from now. The Earth Day can bring more knowledge and information to educate
people. It also reminds people years and years that we need to do everything and protect the world we only have before it is too late.
Forty–six years later, there are more and more countries, organizations, schools and others institutions join activities which help protect the
environment. For instance, cut the electricity for an hour, planets more trees, and build up protect areas. The government also release many laws to
enforce the protection such as Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act.
One case I heard before, in 2007, HSBC set up a Green Bank for the company. The Green Bank account can record the company's carbon footprint. And
which helps to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide by their company's activity. At the end of the year, the company need to pay for their
pollution. The theme of this projects, is help the our world and let people realize, the more we pollute right now, the more money we need to fixed in
the future. As one of the people who is living in the same world, I decided to do my part to protect the environment, the

"We're all scared. But we must tell the truth about what's happening and challenge people to do something to prevent it" – Paul Ehrlich. (Leahy,2013)
The future of our planet has been a great concern for the global community for many years. In their article 'Can a Collapse of Global Civilisation be
Avoided?' Paul and Anne Ehrlich explore the current ecological and socio–cultural trends that they believe, if left untreated, will lead to the inevitable
collapse. Unlike past civilizations, the modern global community has the knowledge, skills and technologies to solve the several pressing issues Ehrlich
presents in this article. So what are those issues? Since the agricultural revolution, technological developments and advancements have... Show more

There are at least two billion people are hungry or malnourished and the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that food production will
need to increase by 70% (FAO Report, 2009) to keep up with the demands of a growing population. Overconsumption also contributes to the
widening gap. In fact, if every person consumed resources at a US level, four to five more earths would be needed! (Ehrlich, 2013)The article also
poses the question of how best to humanely restrict population growth. It is suggested that women should be provided with access to education and
all sexually active people are provided with contraception and access to abortions, a decision that would meet much opposition from religious
organisations. Finally, Ehrlich discusses the role of the scientific community and the need for global cooperation if anything is to be done. The need
for better education is greatly emphasised, not only for the public but also for governments and economists. Collaboration between social scientists
and natural scientists is suggested in order to better understand how to facilitate the 'mobilization' of society that is required to solve these issues on a
global level. Public myths such as the saving powers of technological innovation need to be broken and an emphasis placed on developing 'foresight
intelligence', which Ehrlich claims will provide the long–term analysis and

Walmart Case Study
Founded by Sam Walton, Walmart is an American multinational retail chain, incorporated in the year 1969, has fully transformed the landscape of
retail organized business with it's innovative business strategies. Case description The case primarily discusses about the sustainable operations
strategies in the USA and how they can be successfully moulded for the ever growing Chinese Market. Pressure was mounting on wal–mart, as there
was a hue and cry of being power centric and environmentally insensitive which led them to turn their focus on better initiatives. The organization was
facing increased public criticism on account of a few issues. It was being blamed in issues like contention over low health benefits for its workers and
gender discriminations in internal promotions. It's image was tarnished as there were many accusations. In an attempt to portray a better public image,
the idea of sustainable operations was floated by the company . The outcomes of the continuous deliberation was 3 categories of projects– Quick wins
(Which would yield the stakeholders quick gains over a short period of time), Innovative projects (which would provide the stakeholders prospective
gains within one to three years), and finally the Game changers (Which would take a long time to yield results) Moreover during the planning phase, it
was discovered that the chinese consumers were highly cost sensitive and other factors of comfort during shopping were less powerful in comparison
to cost.

Human Nature And Awareness Toward Environmental Protection
Many individuals are unaware of the harm that they cause to our planet. We live in a society where we eat and use electricity without knowing where
it comes from or what damage it might cause to our planet. We have needs that do no make sense to the rest of the world. While some of us enjoy our
luxurious meals, other individuals are given little choice. Richer countries have been accustomed to the point where many are unaware of the problems
that they cause. The ecological footprint is a very good tool to show us how we use our nature and raise awareness toward environmental protection.
After taking my ecological footprint quiz I was surprised that my results were so poor. I think of myself who is environmentally stable. I do not
litter by throwing garbage on the streets, I even pick up any garbage that I see thrown in sanitary places. My ecological footprint said that we would
need 4.6 planets earths to provide enough resources if everyone lived like me. This quiz educated me that I am not environmentally friendly as I think
I am. Also, in order to support my lifestyle it takes about 22.6 tons of carbon dioxide. My main cause to this planet is my consumption of energy.
Usually I drive about 70 miles everyday because I commute to school. I never realized how much energy that takes until now. Driving is one of the
most polluting things that we do especially here in the United States. Consumption of gasoline can release toxic wastes that can cause air pollution,

When starting this assignment I had no clue exactly what my ecological footprint was, I never really paid attention to what and ecological footprint
was until this assignment. In order for me to figure out what my ecological footprint is I chose to take two quizzes in order to see if my answers all

thought I was and I definitely need to make some changes. My first ecological footprint quiz that I took was through Global Footprint Network. The
quiz was simulated and it questioned how I go about things on a daily bases. Once all the questions were answered it gave me the diagnostic of my
ecological footprint and I discovered I am about the complete opposite of ecofriendly. At the end of the quiz after receiving my diagnostic the website

began to question the accuracy of both quizzes but then I realized that the second quiz asked me more questions of me and my family rather than

Human Impact On My Ecological Footprint Calculator
An ecological footprint calculator determines how much land area it takes to support the lifestyle of each individual on planet Earth. Ecological
footprint calculators give individuals the opportunity to discover their major areas of resource consumption and to find out what pursuable measures
are needed to utilize fewer resources. At the end of the quiz, the calculator reveals how many planet Earths it takes to support the lifestyle of each
individual. An individual does not realize the excessive utilization of resources because a necessary supply is constantly available. Fortunately, human
influence can have a positive impact on the planet because environmental awareness improves the health of the ecosystem and preserves each species.

procedures of ecological awareness, but are not a sufficient amount to change my ecological footprint calculation. The top economic sector impacting
my ecological footprint was services, and the lowest was shelter. Forgetting to turn off the lights when I leave a room in the house is a habit that has a

Essay On Ecological Footprint
Climate change is affecting the earth through increases in temperature, melting of polar ice caps, changes in precipitation patterns, and many more
environmental changes. Countries throughout the world emit greenhouse gasses everyday which contributes to the greenhouse effect on our
atmosphere. This causes a heating of our atmosphere affecting our environment alongside increasing the global temperature. It is up to policy makers
and government officials to enforce more efficient and environmentally protecting laws to fight against climate change. Projections of becoming more
eco–centric is favourable for the world environmentally and countries in an economic standpoint (Enkvist, 2007). Reducing our ecological footprint is
beneficial in all aspects of society. The steps to become more environment aware which policy makers can make, either big or small, can accumulate to
a big change throughout countries. Economic growth due to changes in becoming greener is an incentive to countries to benefit both their wealth and
the environment (Enkvist, 2007). In addition, the few negative impacts on humans through new policies have mitigation effects which compensate and
is substantial to improve on human health on a global scale (Haines, 2009). Socio–economic and political conditions have to be assessed when making
such changes and can prove to delay the progression of greener options (Vuuren, 2007). Developed countries, especially, need reduction of their
greenhouse gases to decrease ecological footprint and for less contribution to climate change. Taking steps to reduce greenhouse–gas emissions have
beneficial impact on human health. From reducing the use of auto vehicles, making households more energy efficient, to using lower carbon fuel
technologies, can improve the quality of life of the current and next generations. Policy makers in developed countries can enforce new laws to benefit
a whole range of problems currently (Haines, 2009). There are many sectors to take measures to reduce GHG emissions such as household energy,
agriculture, transport, and electricity generation (Gurria, 2009). Efforts have been seen to reduce child mortality by reducing pollution, increase
avoidance of diseases of the heart and lungs.

this is one of the complicated things about teaching issues regarding the environment––some students don't form their own opinions after learning and

Triple Bottom Line Accounting Concept And Framework
Triple Bottom Line Accounting
By: Emma Juskovic
The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) accounting concept and framework was first created by John Elkington in the mid 1990's, and has since changed the
way for–profit, non–profit and government agencies measure the sustainability of their initiatives and company. The TBL framework is flexible and
can be adopted and molded based on the specific needs of an organization. The framework is comprised of three parts, which are: social (People),
environmental (Planet), and financial (Profit), commonly referred to as 3Ps. This framework does spark debate regarding the ethical problems behind

Businesses can prepare their own analysis for each category by obtaining numerous pieces of information, which relate to their current state as well as
knowledge about how their company's decisions and operations impact their society and environment.
Financial measures in the Triple Bottom Line accounting framework should follow the common financial accounting guidelines, Generally Accepted
Accounting Principle's, and International Financial Reporting Standard's. The financial measures in the Triple Bottom Line accounting framework
however are not under as much scrutiny as the Environmental and Social measures, though there is debate over certain ethical aspects of Financial
Accounting as a well. Financial Accounting in a business is usually not changed in a dramatic way, when a company decides to adopt the TBL
framework. Some changes that financial records might reflect include an increase in expenses related to environmental or social care, a decrease in
expenses that reflect a detriment to the society or environment (i.e. Transportation Expense), a possible increase in revenues as a result of customer
support of the adoption of TBL.
Triple Bottom Line accounting brings light to the importance of accounting for Environmental measures, as it helps a company track their ecological
footprint and make plans to improve it. A company can be profitable for several years, however if

To further understand these environmental processes, one must divulge into these individual environmental concepts to properly understand their

world environment by the economic imperative of globalization" (Vamvakas, 2014).

In 2008, the Canadian government established the federal sustainable act which has "signaled a change in how the Government of Canada would fulfill
its commitment to sustainable development. The Act called for a comprehensive approach representing all of government through a Federal
Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) that is updated every three years. This approach, currently in its second cycle, provides a
whole–of–government view of actions to achieve environmental sustainability, is integrated into core federal planning and reporting, and is supported
by a robust measurement strategy" (COG, 2014). The Ecological footprint "acknowledges that humanity is facing difficult challenges, makes them
apparent, and directs action toward sustainable living" (Vamvakas, 2014). The formal definition of the ecological footprint briefly identifies the link
and interconnectedness among the concept of sustainable development.
The ecological footprint theory and explanation was developed by Mathis Wackernagel and William E. Rees in 1996, to account for the earth's natural
resource depletion and consumption associated with humanity (Bunker). Greg Bunker, author of Ecological Footprint Analysis defines the ecological
footprint as "the total area of biologically productive land and water required by an entity to sustain its current consumption levels. The Ecological

The Effects Of Overpopulation On The Environment
The current world's population is estimated at approximately six billion people in the world and even this number can be inaccurate. According to
Sernau (2012), what is harder to estimate are the effects that this growth and change will have on our planet. When looking at overpopulation and the
effects on the environment, we look at the overpopulation in cities and countries across the nation. Many economic problems in our society place an
impact on our environment from overpopulation come from the overuse of resources, lack of resources, and pollution. There are many solutions to this
problem but the common factor is humans have to put controls in place and take care of the environment, so the required resources do not become
extinct.
Human population growth is a major contributor to global warming, given that more people means more resources. When reading an article on
population growth on climate change (Scientific American, 2017), it reports that many population experts believe the answer lies in improving the
health of women and children in developing nations. By reducing poverty and infant mortality, increasing women's and girls' access to basic human
rights (health care, education, economic opportunity), educating women about birth control options and ensuring access to voluntary family planning
services, women will choose to limit family size (Scientific American, 2017). The birth rate continues to be a big factor in overpopulation as reducing
the family size and

Action Oriented Procedures And Measurability
The objective of each target is to indicate action oriented procedures and measurability. I consider target 12.1 and 12.7 to be measurable because you
can determine the number of countries actively engaged in SCP. The engagement can be seen through national policy, action plans or corresponding
activities linked to sustainable development (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.2 is difficult to measure because it requires a multitude of calculations,
some of which include: carbon footprint, domestic material input and domestic material consumption (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.3 is
unquestionably quantifiable due to its specificity regarding the amount of per capita global food waste being reduced. Target 12.4 can be measured
using data concerning the amount of chemicals found within water, soil and food agriculture produced every year as well as the number of reports
on management for those in agreed relations (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.5 remains unclear and immeasurable based on lack of definition. The use

Wwf Essay
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non–governmental organization working on issues regarding the conservation, research and
restoration of the environment, formerly named the World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in Canada and the United States. It is the
world's largest independent conservation organization with over 5 million supporters worldwide, working in more than 100 countries, supporting
around 1,300 conservation and environmental projects. WWF is a foundation, in 2010 deriving 57% of funding from individuals and bequests, 17%
from government sources (such as the World Bank, DFID, USAID) and 11% from corporations.
The group says its mission is "to halt and reverse the destruction of our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These concepts laid the foundation for sustainable development, a philosophy that now permeates conservation, development, and even corporate
strategies.
1990S
The 1990s saw more widespread acceptance of the global links between the environment, human activities and human welfare – as well as the value of
biodiversity and the emerging threat of climate change.
These issues were explicitly incorporated in WWF's 1990 Mission Statement, and have framed the organization's on–the–ground and policy work ever
since. Continuing the move from country–based projects to a targeted and more unified approach, WWF developed a global conservation strategy that
focused efforts on the world's most critical ecoregions and in six key areas – species, forest, marine and freshwater conservation, climate change and
toxic chemicals. In addition to its long–standing relationships with traditional conservation partners, WWF also began to more actively engage with
business and other new partners to promote sustainable resource management.
2000S
The turn of the century saw WWF vastly upscale its ambition, aiming for transformational changes that lead to lasting conservation, sustainable
development and sustainable lifestyles.
With twin goals of conserving biodiversity and reducing humanity's Ecological Footprint, the organization is drawing on the combined strength and
expertise of its global network to create innovative partnerships that integrate

Ecological Footprint Analysis Paper
The concept of footprint analysis is that it can change overtime, depending on the number of individuals living in that particular area and by how much
they consume in terms of energy, technology, goods and resources. It gave me an idea of how much land water is needed to support my lifestyle,
determine my population, geography, climate, food and needs for energy. Moreover, it gives me a few ideas of what I can do to reduce my ecological
footprint in each consumption category such as transportation, housing, food and goods.
My results and what I learned are the fact that many activities impact our footprint and there would be a need for 5.2 Planet Earths to provide enough

Debt Definition Essay
Debt has become the new American bedfellow; "The average U.S. household with debt carries $15,762 in credit card debt and $130,922 in total debt"
(Issa). One should keep in mind that the "$130,922"is a median debt; some live debt–free while others have substantially higher debt (Issa). For twelve
years running, the cost of living in our country has grown greater than our median wages contributing to the overall mountain of debt incurred (Issa).
Our country has grown used to the debt that looms because that is what the American way has become; buy bigger, one can always settle finances at a
later date. Juliet Schor discussed how "The new consumerism, with its growing aspirational gap, has begun to jeopardize the quality of American life".

Ecological Footprint Quiz
When I read that the average American consumes 35 times more resources than the average citizen of India I feel; helpless (d) and guilty (e).
Helpless because, although one person can make a difference, it becomes discouraging when your neighbors and/or community do/does not offer
services (green/solar energy) or practice the same habits (recycling). So I feel helpless as if at times my efforts are futile. And guilty because after this
week's ecological footprint quiz I see I am also part of the problem.
How I feel when I read that human activities are projected to make the earth's climate warmer are; sad (c), concerned (f). Sad because of the effect
climate change has on both species and ecosystems. The species of earth require the right temperatures, fresh water and food sources to survive

Causes And Effects Of Deforestation
Deforestation
Introduction
Deforestation is one of the largest environmental issues facing humanity in the twenty–first century. This type of environmental degradation involves
cutting down trees in natural areas, mainly forests, in order to make room for human developments such as agriculture or infrastructure. Deforestation
has been occurring for centuries all around the world, but as technology becomes more efficient and the human population continues to grow, the
effects of deforestation now are greater than before. More land is being removed to provide for human needs and desires, which has, in turn,
negatively affected the places being degraded as well as Earth's environment as a whole.
Biogeochemical Cycles Biogeochemical cycles are "processes by which matter cycles from the living world to the nonliving physical environment and
back again," which include the carbon, water, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycles (Raven et al. 59). Trees and other plants serve as important
factors that remove carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the environment. As trees are being increasingly logged, the amount of carbon dioxide that
can be removed from the atmosphere is declining. Thus, deforestation has altered the balance of the carbon cycle, as more carbon dioxide is being
released into the atmosphere at a higher rate than it can be withdrawn from the atmosphere. Due to this higher concentration of atmospheric carbon
dioxide from deforestation, global climate changes such as

Throughout human history scholars have been publishing works that discuss the correlation and effects of exponential growth and carrying capacity
on a population species. Exponential growth is described as "the increase of a population (or of anything) by a fixed percentage each year" (Withgott,
Laposata, and Murck 2016), whereas carrying capacity is "the maximum population size that a given environment can sustain" (Withgott, Laposata, and
Murck 2016). Three notable authors to contribute to the topic of exponential growth and carrying capacity are Thomas Malthus, Paul Ehrlich, and

1.What exactly is an ecological footprint? Do you think this is a useful measure for understand and evaluating your impact on the natural environment?
Why or why not?
Ecological footprint is the capacity to continue providing resources or consumption of waste, the biological productivity of the regional space. It
means maintaining a person, region, and the country needs to be able to accommodate human discharge of waste, with biological productivity of the
geographical area, which needs to evaluate to carry a population of a certain quality of life, how much renewable resources are available for human
use, or an ecosystem capacity of absorbing waste. In my mind, I think this is relatively somewhat useful. Because the calculation of ecological footprint

An Description Of An Ecological Footprint Essay
Introduction
An ecological footprint tells us how much land and sea area is required to produce the resources and living necessities for some number of human
beings upon it , as well as how much that area of land or sea absorbs carbon dioxide emissions. But it also helps us tell how much our particular
land/sea area used for living compared to the land/sea area available on the planet (thus one might say, as in my case, that if everyone lived like me
we would require 3.9 earths to allow for them to live, sustainably). ==========
An ecological footprint is an important unit of measurement to have because it helps give us some indication about the total amount of resources we
are using, and some of its effect on the planet. Thus a footprint can help us reach a better level of sustainable living by giving us some way to
measure our progress towards or away from that particular goal (where otherwise we would have no way of telling truly how sustainably we were
living). ==========
Analysis ==========
If everyone lived like me, we would need 3.9 earths to provide the necessary resources. To support my lifestyle, it would take 17.4 global acres of the
Earth's productive area (or 17 tons of carbon dioxide). Most of which, over 55% would be for energy/land. About 13% would be necessary for crop
land. About a 4% would be needed for grazing. About 18% would be forested land, along with roughly 7% of built up land and roughly 3% in fishing
grounds. (All of these measurements

ecological footprinting tool is used to highlight problem areas and provide clear information on usage. By using this footprinting tool and related
academic literature seven potential strategies have been identified. Recommended Strategies: 1.Reduce single occupant transport by 50% 2.Reduce
Energy usage by 20% 3.Offset 30% of Energy consumption 4.Reduce air travel by 50% 5.Reduce the usage of paper–products by 50% (20% in
advertising and marketing) 6.Install 100kw of Photovoltaic solar cells 7.Introduce vertical gardens on north facing walls By utilising these schemes a
total reduction of 408.9 gha and 0.1 planets is achieved. While this is a modest reduction these strategies, when implemented on a university wide scale,
could dramatically reduce the overall footprint of the university and aid in meeting the 'One Planet 2030' Goal. Introduction In order to live sustainably

The Environmental Impact of Cattle Farming Essay
Mass Cattle farming within modern societies can pose many environmental implications, if caution is not taken. Not only do they contribute to land
degradation, they contaminate soil and water, promote over consumption, and waste excessively high amounts of resources. For many cities in Canada,
this problem affects the condition of their environment. Key initiatives and programs are being mounted, now more than ever, to aid in minimizing
such a demanding issue. More specifically, in Edmonton the framework that has been implemented to address these issues have been provided by
several grants, courtesy of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency. These grants amounting to approximately $2 million, were issued in the beginning
of 2011, and are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of the answer, it is crucial that we look into this conception of the future with harsh eyes so we can remain practical and accountable. We
are in no means searching for a simple solution, merely the right one.
By analyzing research findings and case studies we will be able to disassemble the environmental impact of cattle farming, and make sense of our
counteraction.
The framework being assessed is the form of conflict resolution, or more specifically stress management, battling environmental degradation. Whether
or not the community's stance is feasible is debatable. Ideally, the big picture promises an increase in value–production capacity, and several steps
toward a sustainable market. (Canada News Centre, 2011).

An Ecological Footprint Analysis On The Environment
An ecological footprint analysis is a method to calculate the existing requirements created by each of us in the world 's environmentally productive
area through our forms of the consumption of food and additional goods and the distribution of built up ecologically decomposed terrain. Research
allows us to use this ecological footprint analysis to record the existing food system's pressures on the environment. Ecological Footprint descriptions
record the land of biologically beneficial soil and water required to manufacture the resources exhausted by a certain population and to take up its
waste (Collins & Flynn, 2015). The ecological footprint permits us to oversee a dominant risk to sustainability. An example of this could be the
liquidation of the globe's natural capital as we utilize further resources than the environment can regenerate and generate more excess than the
environment can reprocess (Collins & Flynn, 2015). Examination exposes the prominent function performed by the food system within this liquidation
and highlights how overwhelmingly a sustainable outlook depends on redesigning that routine.
To create a single meal may take a large ecological footprint. The data presented by the Global Footprint Network, suggests that my current standard of
living would require enough resources to sustain about 3.5 planet Earths (Ecological Footprint Quiz, 2016). This demonstrates why understand

that businesses are part of the society. Therefore, Businesses should not take only from the society, but consider its activities' environmental impacts as

True Wealth, She Presents, By Juliet Schor
In Juliet Schor's True Wealth, she presents, argues for, and envisions an economy, which stresses on the conceptualization of plentitude. In her
publication, the main points can be broken down into three separate categories: challenges, the ideals of plentitude, and the four fundamentals or
solution towards plentitude. The collection of formal analysis and insight towards key economical concepts and data serves as a concrete foundation
for her proposed framework of a sustainable economic and environmental future.
In chapter 1, page 12–20, Schor present a series of statements to criticize on the sustainability and concept of the BAU or defined as "business as
usual" economy. She emphasizes that the BAU economy will yield less of a return in profitability in the coming decades with a possibility towards
economic stagnation, and an increase in unemployment rate as a result of industrial decline in profitability. Furthermore, she illustrates how there will
be an increase in environmental pollution and damages to the world, and scarcities in resources due to abnormal climate change in relation to the
profitability of natural resource industries such as agriculture and so forth.
Throughout chapter 2 and 3, Schor condemns the notion of BAU growth and a higher GDP. She presents an "Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint,
and Biocapacity" on page 60, and breaks down the basis of the "Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC)" on page 73–75. Through the analysis of these

The Trouble With Wilderness By Norton 533
William Cronon, "The Trouble with Wilderness" Norton 533
William Cronon's work on environmental philosophy The Trouble with Wilderness is most perceptive work ever produced. It has thoughtful impacts
for everyone who revolves around the discussion of the environment.
The Cronon argues that individuals have to change the way of our thinking about wilderness. Cronon's article Getting back to wrong nature or the
trouble with wilderness describes that the wilderness, as individuals see, has no direct relativity to nature. He is of the opinion that people have
excluded nature from their Western Culture. The main idea of Cronon's text is that people can find a solution of their environmental disturbance if they
stop thinking of wilderness as "a dualistic picture in which the human is completely outside the nature" (Cronon). The concept of wilderness in
people's mind was of an aggressive and horrifying desert.
The author argues the issues and troubles with wilderness by using the frontier and sublime thoughts. The author argues that there are two primary
thoughts that explain this evolution: the sublime and the frontier. The sublime is about the idealistic origin of a wonderful site that stimulates the inner
reflexes. In his article, he wrote about sublime landscape. In his opiniom, it is a place where "one might meet devils and run the risk of losing one's
soul, but one might also meet God". This religious thought of wilderness was an embryonic thought (Cronon).

Footprints in the Ecological Sand: An Evaluation of my Personal Consumption
My Score
An 'ecological footprint' is defined by Wackernagel and Rees (1998) as the area of land needed to support a particular lifestyle. After taking the
'ecological footprint calculator' (http://www.wwf.org.au/footprint_calculator/), my result was 2.08 planets. This result surprised me as because I need
more planets than the one we have, then my result and by extension my lifestyle, is not sustainable.
Consumption in Relation to my Score
A main aspect evaluated by an environmental footprint calculator is consumption. The footprint calculator evaluated my differed consumption in the
following areas: food, materials, shelter and mobility. Slater (1997) reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ecological footprint calculator comprises both personal and societal impacts. It is easier to pick and choose which foods, transport and goods we
consume through lifestyle choices than control societal impacts or services such as the government aid, healthcare, infrastructure and roads. Generally
citizens are allocated their share of societal impacts by the government.
The societal impact, as part of our footprints, generally does not vary. And, as Dietz, Rosa and York (2007) state, therefore in certain countries it is not
possible to reduce your footprint below one planet.
Consequently, if we wanted to achieve full sustainability, our focus needs to shift towards changing our own lifestyle as well as swaying our
governments. If I were to make considerable changes to my individual behavior, an important portion of my personal footprint comes from within the
government's control– the way infrastructure is constructed, goods are produced and the government

The Impact Of Climate Change And Global Warming
I. Environmental Issues
What is climate change? Climate change and global warming are two phases that can be used interchangeably because they both reflect the strong
warming trends that scientist have observing over the past century. Climate change occurs when the usual weather for a region switches to the opposite
and this can cause concerns with regional and global food production and security. Food is one of society's key sensitives to climate (Clark, 2012) and
the impact of climate change on a global scale will affect the way food is grown and the availability of food for everyone. For example, in the winter of
2015, New England experienced record–breaking cold and snowstorms and in the Pacific Northwest, it was the complete opposite with unusual
warmth. If the climate continues to change, plant biodiversity and animal life that are native to one region could become extinct or it will have to adapt.
In Ohio, cool water species of fish such as walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, muskies and white bass may struggle with the warmer water
temperatures pushing them northward. With the rising warmer waters, species such as largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, carp, white perch,
bluegill and channel catfish populations would stay here in Lake Erie as warmer water would suit them best ("Sandusky Register", 2017). Fish such
as striped bass may be able to establish in the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence Seaway ("Sandusky Register", 2017) just like the white perch did 40
years ago.
II. Human Impact
The United Nations estimates that one in nine people in the world do not have access to sufficient food to lead a healthy lifestyle ("The Environmental
Impact of Food Waste According", 2016) and nearly one–third of the food produced in the world is wasted and lost for various reasons. Food loss and
waste can cause a huge economical loss and cause severe damage to the world. Food loss happens especially on the manufacturing degree due to
natural calamities, loss of proper infrastructure and negative practices while food waste normally happens when people purchase food, food that has
expired and people who intentionally discards edible food. When food is wasted and goes

Ecological Footprint Quiz Analysis

  • 1. Ecological Footprint Quiz Analysis After taking the Ecological Footprint Quiz, it was calculated that we would need 4.9 earths if everyone lived my lifestyle. This is fairly congruent with the American average of 5 earths. While I know that my life style is not sustainable, it is very easy to lose track of just how unsustainable the average American life is. According to the pie chart breakdown, 48% of my ecologic impact is in "services" area. In further researching information about this, I found that these services are not variable in the calculator; everyone taking the quiz has a portion of their nation's "services" footprint simply due to living in that country. As is described on the website, "service areas include (but are not limited to) health care, entertainment, restaurants, real estate, legal services, government and the military" (Global Footprint Calculator, 2015). It is interesting that the government services that I may or may not take part of are included in my footprint simply because I live in the United States. I suppose that one way I can lower my ecological footprint is simply by moving to a different country.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I spend eight to ten hours of my day at a desk typing on a computer and speaking on the phone. If the power were to go out, there would be no work for me to do. Even when I leave work, I am usually tied to my phone or laptop completing schoolwork or browsing social media. In many ways, my lifestyle is centered around our available energy sources. Based on this quiz, I use about 18.3 global acres of earth's productive area with an expenditure of about 18.9 tons of carbon dioxide on average. It seems that energy land is the production area responsible for the majority of my carbon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Ecological Footprint In Canada Introduction In order to preserve Canada's natural capital, it is imperative to improve Canada's ecological footprint. A country's ecological footprint consists of that country's impact on their environment via their use of resources2. Canada has a small population which results in a much lower ecological footprint than countries with bigger populationsВ¬6. Canada's total ecological footprint is 224 global hectares (gha)6. This is comparable to the United States with a total ecological footprint of 2.3 billion gha, China with 2.9 billion gha and India with 1.1 billion gha6. This does not mean that Canada is better at preserving natural capital than these other countries6. Canada's per capita ecological footprint is 6.4gha6. The University of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the largest contributors to a high ecological footprint is related to personal transportation and the construction, maintenance and operations of buildings3. When more people are living in an area, the amount of energy and transportation needed decreases and so does the area's ecological footprint3. This occurs because as walking increases, the amount of personal driving decreases. Another way Vancouver is working to reduce its ecological footprint is by protecting land in the "Green Zone"7. About 60% of the region's land is protected7. This includes agricultural land, watersheds, and natural and recreational areas7. These "Green Zones" will limit access and help preserve the region's natural capital. The David Suzuki Foundation proposed a South Coast Conservation Program in order to "conserve and restore at risk species and ecosystems on the British Columbia South Coast"9. The projects main focus is to preserve ecosystems and maintain biodiversity9. These are essential components in improving natural capital. The Emily Carr University of Art in Design (ECUAD) in Vancouver joined forces with The David Suzuki Foundation (DSF)10. Their goal was an to provide a natural capital application as an educational tool to provide data on natural capital have it more readily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. What Is Your Overall Impact On Your Ecological Footprint An ecological footprint is your overall impact on the environment based on the resources that you use. The resources that you use will give an estimate to determine the area that is needed to support your lifestyle. Typically a person in a modern society that is industrialized can have a bigger ecological footprint than a person in a society that is not as developed and where certain resources have not reached. After taking the quiz my overall footprint was 4.6 planet earths. It surprised me very much because when I first went on the website I took the basic quiz first just to get an idea of what the point of the test was, and I got a total of 5 planet earths. Once I was done I thought for sure that I would get a lot less if I had to put in details, so I answered everything honestly and it only decreased by .4 planets. I was also surprised because for a few questions my answers were "infrequently", or "occasionally" which I thought would help.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lowest was a tie between mobility and shelter which both came in at 10%. I think the practices that had the greatest impact were the questions about electricity amount and gas amount. Although in a city like Philadelphia where you obviously use more gas in the winter for heating purposes and electricity in the summer for cooling purposes, the answers to those questions can differ by season. I think the other habit that might have increased my footprint was the amount of packaged and non–locally grown foods that I consume. I selected the answer that mentions the can of ravioli with the salad as a supplement. I do cook regularly, but everything is packaged or bought at a supermarket where the food is shipped from other parts. Even the salads that I do eat are packaged and/or ... • 4. Personal Ecological Footprint An ecological footprint is the amount of Earth's resources that humans use in terms of how much land is required to produce those resources. By this equation, people are currently using 1.5 times as much resources as the Earth can sustain (GFN). Before calculating my personal ecological footprint, I predicted that mine would be somewhat less than the average American because I try to make sustainable choices in my everyday actions. I walk everywhere with the occasional exception of riding a bus for short distances, try to conserve energy, and recycle as often as I can, however, I eat a significant amount of animal products and processed foods. I also predicted that because I live in a highly developed nation, my impact would be much greater... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The amount of resources humans currently use is far greater than the Earth can support, and eventually the finite sources of energy such as coal, gas, and oil will run out. Even renewable resources such as trees and farming land are being depleted at a faster rate than they can be naturally replenished. The only way that the Earth's resources can continue to support the growing human population is if we attempt to reduce our ecological footprint, and there are several ways to go about this task. For one, people can find sustainable methods of fulfilling their needs for things like energy and food. Instead of using so much land for taking care of livestock and growing feed, farms can focus on growing vegetables for humans which use much less energy and water. People will have to eat less meat and purchase food that was grown locally to reduce transportation costs. Forests, farmland, and fisheries need to be used in a more sustainable manner so that they are not depleted before they can be replenished. We could also reduce our footprint by making use of cleaner, alternative sources of energy like wind and solar power instead of non–renewable ones like gas and oil that will soon run out. Although it is not practical for everyone to stop driving cars and flying, newly manufactured cars should be built as fuel efficient as possible or be able to be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Through the ecological footprint experiment I conducted, I... Through the ecological footprint experiment I conducted, I realized that if everybody were to live in this manner, we would be in need of 6.13 earths. This is the amount of the land's ecosystem habitat that the human race today would require in order to survive sustainably (Dunn, 2008). The online ecological footprint calculator is a very innovative and informative application that poses great benefit to the society. The ecological footprint calculator calculates the amount of inputs and outputs of an individual's lifestyle in effect of the natural resources within their region of habitat. This consequently enables for a self–assessment at the individual level, where one can follow specific measures to reduce their ecological footprint to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These measures are inclusive of aspects such as the consumption of a healthy diet, estimating one's exact consumption requirements for a day, and investing in food storage for future use measures such as freezing of food amongst others. The goods and services footprint level was also calculated to be at a high. This project on my nature of consumption of goods and services within my general day. It projects that in use of goods and services, my behavior is one that includes a lot of wastage. The best reversal measures of this would be to practice restrained sustainable use of goods and services. This includes aspects such as choosing quality fabric clothes to reduce the rate of my buying and throwing away of old clothes; and the same projected to other goods and services. The lowest of my ecological footprint was from my housing footprint. This means that the nature of my interrelation of housing is sustainable. This can be related to the fact that I have been living in one house with other members of my family. The house is medium sized and all rooms are full except one. The experiment also provided for a projection of my footprints share in the different biomes. The largest share was with forestland footprint, then pastureland footprint, followed by marine fisheries footprint, and finally the cropland footprint. These shared biomes establish the level of effect that my ecological footprint has on the different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The Ecological Footprint Of The Human Race The ecological footprint of the human race is only getting bigger and bigger as our population steadily increases. It is estimated that our population grows 1.1% each year and it doesn 't show a trace of slowing down (who.int). We have all hopefully heard the phrase "reduce, reuse, and recycle." This phrase alone could help us gradually reduce our ecological footprint, but many poor countries don 't have governing systems that takes in and sorts plastic or paper products. Some environmentalists say that unless something drastically changes, humans are doomed in the future because of lack of resources. Some say that by then, humans will have sufficient technology to sustain ourselves and our large resource consuming population. I think most people can agree that if we all change our mindset and governments work together to solve the problem, there can be drastic improvements. As stated from greenliving.com, "An increase in population size makes excessive demands on natural resources, and increases the demand on agriculture and livestock." Overall, there are many negative impacts associated with population explosion. Some environmentalists believe that the human race will reach its carrying capacity relatively soon and our population will plummet. I beg to differ because I think that humans will find a way to solve the population problem before disasters arrive. The most efficient and easy way to solve the problem is very controversial. • 7. Opportunities And Barriers Of Sustainability Opportunities and Barriers to Sustainability In order to be an integral part in saving the Earth's environment and ensuring resources for future generations, the way individuals live needs to change. Being fortunate enough to reside in one of the nation's most developed countries, I wanted to make sure the way I have been living has been meeting the standards set by sustainable living. Using the overall environmental footprint provided by Global Footprint Network, I was able to pinpoint the areas in my life that needed to improve in order for me to be more sustainable. I chose to use this Footprint calculator because it gives you a breakdown on how many resources from the planet are needed in order to provide for your living standards. Once you have input the information, the calculator provides a general ecological footprint explanation and gives real case scenarios in which you can do to reduce it. The results for my footprint were as follows: If everyone were to live the way I do, we would need 5.3 planet earths to provide enough resources. It would take 23.6 global acres of land for energy production, which would emit 23.6 tons of carbon dioxide, and the biggest impacts on my personal footprint included 36 percent of services, 21 percent food and 19 percent mobility. Clearly, my desires for comfort, mobility and relief from labor has led me to make impractical decision making. One of the benefits of the Footprint Calculator is that creates what if scenarios, that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Earth Day Is An Annual Events That Happen Earth Day is an annual events that happen on April 22th in every year. It is a mark in the history, also the environment field. On April 22th, 1970, it woke everyone that human need to protect the environment they are living today (The History of Earth Day | Earth Day Network). This brought the caution to people that we need to aware the environmental concerns from now. The Earth Day can bring more knowledge and information to educate people. It also reminds people years and years that we need to do everything and protect the world we only have before it is too late. Forty–six years later, there are more and more countries, organizations, schools and others institutions join activities which help protect the environment. For instance, cut the electricity for an hour, planets more trees, and build up protect areas. The government also release many laws to enforce the protection such as Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act. One case I heard before, in 2007, HSBC set up a Green Bank for the company. The Green Bank account can record the company's carbon footprint. And which helps to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide by their company's activity. At the end of the year, the company need to pay for their pollution. (Leahy,2013) The future of our planet has been a great concern for the global community for many years. In their article 'Can a Collapse of Global Civilisation be Avoided?' Paul and Anne Ehrlich explore the current ecological and socio–cultural trends that they believe, if left untreated, will lead to the inevitable collapse. There are at least two billion people are hungry or malnourished and the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that food production will need to increase by 70% (FAO Report, 2009) to keep up with the demands of a growing population. Overconsumption also contributes to the widening gap. In fact, if every person consumed resources at a US level, four to five more earths would be needed! (Ehrlich, 2013)The article also poses the question of how best to humanely restrict population growth. It is suggested that women should be provided with access to education and all sexually active people are provided with contraception and access to abortions, a decision that would meet much opposition from religious organisations. Finally, Ehrlich discusses the role of the scientific community and the need for global cooperation if anything is to be done. The need for better education is greatly emphasised, not only for the public but also for governments and economists. Collaboration between social scientists and natural scientists is suggested in order to better understand how to facilitate the 'mobilization' of society that is required to solve these issues on a global level. Public myths such as the saving powers of technological innovation need to be broken and an emphasis placed on developing 'foresight intelligence', which Ehrlich claims will provide the long–term analysis and ... Walmart Case Study Founded by Sam Walton, Walmart is an American multinational retail chain, incorporated in the year 1969, has fully transformed the landscape of retail organized business with it's innovative business strategies. Case description The case primarily discusses about the sustainable operations strategies in the USA and how they can be successfully moulded for the ever growing Chinese Market. Pressure was mounting on wal–mart, as there was a hue and cry of being power centric and environmentally insensitive which led them to turn their focus on better initiatives. The organization was facing increased public criticism on account of a few issues. It was being blamed in issues like contention over low health benefits for its workers and gender discriminations in internal promotions. It's image was tarnished as there were many accusations. In an attempt to portray a better public image, the idea of sustainable operations was floated by the company . The outcomes of the continuous deliberation was 3 categories of projects– Quick wins (Which would yield the stakeholders quick gains over a short period of time), Innovative projects (which would provide the stakeholders prospective gains within one to three years), and finally the Game changers (Which would take a long time to yield results) Moreover during the planning phase, it was discovered that the chinese consumers were highly cost sensitive and other factors of comfort during shopping were less powerful in comparison to cost. ... • 11. Human Nature And Awareness Toward Environmental Protection Many individuals are unaware of the harm that they cause to our planet. We live in a society where we eat and use electricity without knowing where it comes from or what damage it might cause to our planet. We have needs that do no make sense to the rest of the world. While some of us enjoy our luxurious meals, other individuals are given little choice. Richer countries have been accustomed to the point where many are unaware of the problems that they cause. The ecological footprint is a very good tool to show us how we use our nature and raise awareness toward environmental protection. After taking my ecological footprint quiz I was surprised that my results were so poor. I think of myself who is environmentally stable. I do not litter by throwing garbage on the streets, I even pick up any garbage that I see thrown in sanitary places. My ecological footprint said that we would need 4.6 planets earths to provide enough resources if everyone lived like me. This quiz educated me that I am not environmentally friendly as I think I am. Also, in order to support my lifestyle it takes about 22.6 tons of carbon dioxide. My main cause to this planet is my consumption of energy. Usually I drive about 70 miles everyday because I commute to school. I never realized how much energy that takes until now. Driving is one of the most polluting things that we do especially here in the United States. Consumption of gasoline can release toxic wastes that can cause air pollution, which ... My Ecological Footprint When starting this assignment I had no clue exactly what my ecological footprint was, I never really paid attention to what and ecological footprint was until this assignment. In order for me to figure out what my ecological footprint is I chose to take two quizzes in order to see if my answers all matched up. After taking both tests my results were all different but all stated that the way I am going about life in our habit is not so eco–friendly as I thought I was and I definitely need to make some changes. My first ecological footprint quiz that I took was through Global Footprint Network. The quiz was simulated and it questioned how I go about things on a daily bases. Once all the questions were answered it gave me the diagnostic of my ecological footprint and I discovered I am about the complete opposite of ecofriendly. At the end of the quiz after receiving my diagnostic the website gave me more additional information on how ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I thought the ecological footprint quizzes would have close to the same questions but to my surprise WWF.org had extremely different questions compared to Global Footprint Network. According to this second quiz I use just enough eco–friendly products that if everyone was to live like me that we would be only be okay living if we had 4.35 earths. After taking both quizzes I began to question the accuracy of both quizzes but then I realized that the second quiz asked me more questions of me and my family rather than just solely based on me. For example, the second quiz asked a question such as, how much meat do you and your family consume on a weekly bases? Whereas the first quiz asked how much meat I consume on a daily bases. Also, when the second quiz asked question they gave very few detailed answers to choose from therefore I received a biased ecological footprint unlike the first quiz that was based just on ... • 13. Human Impact On My Ecological Footprint Calculator An ecological footprint calculator determines how much land area it takes to support the lifestyle of each individual on planet Earth. Ecological footprint calculators give individuals the opportunity to discover their major areas of resource consumption and to find out what pursuable measures are needed to utilize fewer resources. At the end of the quiz, the calculator reveals how many planet Earths it takes to support the lifestyle of each individual. An individual does not realize the excessive utilization of resources because a necessary supply is constantly available. Fortunately, human influence can have a positive impact on the planet because environmental awareness improves the health of the ecosystem and preserves each species. Thus,... Recycling, turning off electronics when leaving a room, and using public transportation are my common procedures of ecological awareness, but are not a sufficient amount to change my ecological footprint calculation. The top economic sector impacting my ecological footprint was services, and the lowest was shelter. Forgetting to turn off the lights when I leave a room in the house is a habit that has a huge impact on services being the top economic sector of my ecological footprint. • 14. Essay On Ecological Footprint Climate change is affecting the earth through increases in temperature, melting of polar ice caps, changes in precipitation patterns, and many more environmental changes. Countries throughout the world emit greenhouse gasses everyday which contributes to the greenhouse effect on our atmosphere. This causes a heating of our atmosphere affecting our environment alongside increasing the global temperature. It is up to policy makers and government officials to enforce more efficient and environmentally protecting laws to fight against climate change. Projections of becoming more eco–centric is favourable for the world environmentally and countries in an economic standpoint (Enkvist, 2007). Reducing our ecological footprint is beneficial in all aspects of society. The steps to become more environment aware which policy makers can make, either big or small, can accumulate to a big change throughout countries. Economic growth due to changes in becoming greener is an incentive to countries to benefit both their wealth and the environment (Enkvist, 2007). In addition, the few negative impacts on humans through new policies have mitigation effects which compensate and is substantial to improve on human health on a global scale (Haines, 2009). Socio–economic and political conditions have to be assessed when making such changes and can prove to delay the progression of greener options (Vuuren, 2007). Developed countries, especially, need reduction of their greenhouse gases to decrease ecological footprint and for less contribution to climate change. Taking steps to reduce greenhouse–gas emissions have beneficial impact on human health. From reducing the use of auto vehicles, making households more energy efficient, to using lower carbon fuel technologies, can improve the quality of life of the current and next generations. Policy makers in developed countries can enforce new laws to benefit a whole range of problems currently (Haines, 2009). There are many sectors to take measures to reduce GHG emissions such as household energy, agriculture, transport, and electricity generation (Gurria, 2009). Efforts have been seen to reduce child mortality by reducing pollution, increase avoidance of diseases of the heart and lungs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sharing this information with others is complex; with many attitudes and priorities already made before discussions happen. Triple Bottom Line Accounting Concept And Framework Triple Bottom Line Accounting By: Emma Juskovic The Triple Bottom Line (TBL) accounting concept and framework was first created by John Elkington in the mid 1990's, and has since changed the way for–profit, non–profit and government agencies measure the sustainability of their initiatives and company. The TBL framework is flexible and can be adopted and molded based on the specific needs of an organization. The framework is comprised of three parts, which are: social (People), environmental (Planet), and financial (Profit), commonly referred to as 3Ps. This framework does spark debate regarding the ethical problems behind measuring, quantifying and accounting for social and environmental variables, which is often not supported by many ... Businesses can prepare their own analysis for each category by obtaining numerous pieces of information, which relate to their current state as well as knowledge about how their company's decisions and operations impact their society and environment. Financial measures in the Triple Bottom Line accounting framework should follow the common financial accounting guidelines, Generally Accepted Accounting Principle's, and International Financial Reporting Standard's. The financial measures in the Triple Bottom Line accounting framework however are not under as much scrutiny as the Environmental and Social measures, though there is debate over certain ethical aspects of Financial Accounting as a well. Financial Accounting in a business is usually not changed in a dramatic way, when a company decides to adopt the TBL framework. Some changes that financial records might reflect include an increase in expenses related to environmental or social care, a decrease in expenses that reflect a detriment to the society or environment (i.e. Transportation Expense), a possible increase in revenues as a result of customer support of the adoption of TBL. Triple Bottom Line accounting brings light to the importance of accounting for Environmental measures, as it helps a company track their ecological footprint and make plans to improve it. This approach, currently in its second cycle, provides a whole–of–government view of actions to achieve environmental sustainability, is integrated into core federal planning and reporting, and is supported by a robust measurement strategy" (COG, 2014). The Ecological footprint "acknowledges that humanity is facing difficult challenges, makes them apparent, and directs action toward sustainable living" (Vamvakas, 2014). The formal definition of the ecological footprint briefly identifies the link and interconnectedness among the concept of sustainable development. The ecological footprint theory and explanation was developed by Mathis Wackernagel and William E. According to Sernau (2012), what is harder to estimate are the effects that this growth and change will have on our planet. When looking at overpopulation and the effects on the environment, we look at the overpopulation in cities and countries across the nation. Many economic problems in our society place an impact on our environment from overpopulation come from the overuse of resources, lack of resources, and pollution. There are many solutions to this problem but the common factor is humans have to put controls in place and take care of the environment, so the required resources do not become extinct. Human population growth is a major contributor to global warming, given that more people means more resources. When reading an article on population growth on climate change (Scientific American, 2017), it reports that many population experts believe the answer lies in improving the health of women and children in developing nations. By reducing poverty and infant mortality, increasing women's and girls' access to basic human rights (health care, education, economic opportunity), educating women about birth control options and ensuring access to voluntary family planning services, women will choose to limit family size (Scientific American, 2017). I consider target 12.1 and 12.7 to be measurable because you can determine the number of countries actively engaged in SCP. The engagement can be seen through national policy, action plans or corresponding activities linked to sustainable development (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.2 is difficult to measure because it requires a multitude of calculations, some of which include: carbon footprint, domestic material input and domestic material consumption (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.3 is unquestionably quantifiable due to its specificity regarding the amount of per capita global food waste being reduced. Target 12.4 can be measured using data concerning the amount of chemicals found within water, soil and food agriculture produced every year as well as the number of reports on management for those in agreed relations (Bioregional, 2015). Target 12.5 remains unclear and immeasurable based on lack of definition. The use of the term "substantially" does not give any feedback about quantity, but rather pose the question, by how much? Target 12.6 is similar to 12.1; it can be measured by the number of companies publishing reports (Bioregional, 2015). • 28. Causes And Effects Of Deforestation Deforestation Introduction Deforestation is one of the largest environmental issues facing humanity in the twenty–first century. This type of environmental degradation involves cutting down trees in natural areas, mainly forests, in order to make room for human developments such as agriculture or infrastructure. Deforestation has been occurring for centuries all around the world, but as technology becomes more efficient and the human population continues to grow, the effects of deforestation now are greater than before. More land is being removed to provide for human needs and desires, which has, in turn, negatively affected the places being degraded as well as Earth's environment as a whole. Biogeochemical Cycles Biogeochemical cycles are "processes by which matter cycles from the living world to the nonliving physical environment and back again," which include the carbon, water, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycles (Raven et al. 59). Trees and other plants serve as important factors that remove carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from the environment. As trees are being increasingly logged, the amount of carbon dioxide that can be removed from the atmosphere is declining. Thus, deforestation has altered the balance of the carbon cycle, as more carbon dioxide is being released into the atmosphere at a higher rate than it can be withdrawn from the atmosphere. Due to this higher concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide from deforestation, global climate changes such as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 33. An Description Of An Ecological Footprint Essay Introduction An ecological footprint tells us how much land and sea area is required to produce the resources and living necessities for some number of human beings upon it , as well as how much that area of land or sea absorbs carbon dioxide emissions. But it also helps us tell how much our particular land/sea area used for living compared to the land/sea area available on the planet (thus one might say, as in my case, that if everyone lived like me we would require 3.9 earths to allow for them to live, sustainably). ========== An ecological footprint is an important unit of measurement to have because it helps give us some indication about the total amount of resources we are using, and some of its effect on the planet. Thus a footprint can help us reach a better level of sustainable living by giving us some way to measure our progress towards or away from that particular goal (where otherwise we would have no way of telling truly how sustainably we were living). ========== Analysis ========== If everyone lived like me, we would need 3.9 earths to provide the necessary resources. To support my lifestyle, it would take 17.4 global acres of the Earth's productive area (or 17 tons of carbon dioxide). Most of which, over 55% would be for energy/land. About 13% would be necessary for crop land. About a 4% would be needed for grazing. About 18% would be forested land, along with roughly 7% of built up land and roughly 3% in fishing grounds. By using this footprinting tool and related academic literature seven potential strategies have been identified. Recommended Strategies: 1.Reduce single occupant transport by 50% 2.Reduce Energy usage by 20% 3.Offset 30% of Energy consumption 4.Reduce air travel by 50% 5.Reduce the usage of paper–products by 50% (20% in advertising and marketing) 6.Install 100kw of Photovoltaic solar cells 7.Introduce vertical gardens on north facing walls By utilising these schemes a total reduction of 408.9 gha and 0.1 planets is achieved. While this is a modest reduction these strategies, when implemented on a university wide scale, could dramatically reduce the overall footprint of the university and aid in meeting the 'One Planet 2030' Goal. Introduction In order to live sustainably in a world with limited resources and increasing environmental, social and economic inequity it is vital for institutions, individuals and companies to examine the way ... • 35. The Environmental Impact of Cattle Farming Essay Mass Cattle farming within modern societies can pose many environmental implications, if caution is not taken. Not only do they contribute to land degradation, they contaminate soil and water, promote over consumption, and waste excessively high amounts of resources. For many cities in Canada, this problem affects the condition of their environment. Key initiatives and programs are being mounted, now more than ever, to aid in minimizing such a demanding issue. More specifically, in Edmonton the framework that has been implemented to address these issues have been provided by several grants, courtesy of the Alberta Livestock and Meat Agency. These grants amounting to approximately $2 million, were issued in the beginning of 2011, and are... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regardless of the answer, it is crucial that we look into this conception of the future with harsh eyes so we can remain practical and accountable. We are in no means searching for a simple solution, merely the right one. By analyzing research findings and case studies we will be able to disassemble the environmental impact of cattle farming, and make sense of our counteraction. The framework being assessed is the form of conflict resolution, or more specifically stress management, battling environmental degradation. Whether or not the community's stance is feasible is debatable. Ideally, the big picture promises an increase in value–production capacity, and several steps toward a sustainable market. (Canada News Centre, 2011). "Agriculture today must balance a wide array of demands and environmental challenges that are continually evolving in their nature and complexity. A major challenge is achieving long–term environmental sustainability of production. At the same time, agriculture is increasingly valued by Canadians for its environmental benefits, including its provision of some wildlife habitat; the visual beauty of farmland; and environmental services, such as nutrient cycling and the storage and filtering of water. Governments, farmers, and others have worked together for many years to promote research, programming, and related actions to address environmental concerns. However, an environmentally sustainable form of agriculture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. An Ecological Footprint Analysis On The Environment An ecological footprint analysis is a method to calculate the existing requirements created by each of us in the world 's environmentally productive area through our forms of the consumption of food and additional goods and the distribution of built up ecologically decomposed terrain. Research allows us to use this ecological footprint analysis to record the existing food system's pressures on the environment. Ecological Footprint descriptions record the land of biologically beneficial soil and water required to manufacture the resources exhausted by a certain population and to take up its waste (Collins & Flynn, 2015). The ecological footprint permits us to oversee a dominant risk to sustainability. An example of this could be the liquidation of the globe's natural capital as we utilize further resources than the environment can regenerate and generate more excess than the environment can reprocess (Collins & Flynn, 2015). Examination exposes the prominent function performed by the food system within this liquidation and highlights how overwhelmingly a sustainable outlook depends on redesigning that routine. To create a single meal may take a large ecological footprint. The data presented by the Global Footprint Network, suggests that my current standard of living would require enough resources to sustain about 3.5 planet Earths (Ecological Footprint Quiz, 2016). This demonstrates why understand ecological foot printing is so important and how we can make efforts to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. The Transitional Change From Financial Accounting The Transitional Change from Financial Accounting to Environmental Accounting: Reasons and Consequences Firstly, the purpose of this assignment is to examine the evolution of environmental accounting and its main drivers, and demonstrate the effectiveness and implications of its application. It will start with a brief explanation of the primary financial accounting system and the purpose of accounting disclosures. It will also bring up the debate regarding focusing on maximizing shareholders' wealth solely or incorporating the environmental and ethical impact of businesses on their valuations (Bainbridge, 2002; Coase, 1988). Recently, there has been increasing recognition and widespread empirical evidence of the relationship between... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is a necessity for all organizations to maintain credibility of information disclosed, since is not only to report the value of the firm, but to provide enough information to the internal and external parties interested in assessing the firm's performance themselves. Another line of thought on stakeholders who pursue information about business performance; a pressure has been increasing on businesses in recent years, because of the belief that businesses are part of the society. Therefore, Businesses should not take only from the society, but consider its activities' environmental impacts as well. So, a considerable debate emerged about what should accounting actually account and to which parties a business is accountable. On one hand, there is the capitalistic perspective of focusing solely on the maximization of shareholders' wealth. The god father of management Adam Smith (1776) was the first who pointed out that any person is supposed to act rationally in their own self–interest to maximize efficiency and value for society. Also, (Margolis and Walsh, 2003) believed that shareholders have superiority over other stakeholders and board of directors. In other words, management work towards fulfilling their main responsibility to maximize shareholders' value (Bainbridge, 2002). To reduce costs and maximize profits in the business world, companies try to reduce its costs by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. True Wealth, She Presents, By Juliet Schor In Juliet Schor's True Wealth, she presents, argues for, and envisions an economy, which stresses on the conceptualization of plentitude. In her publication, the main points can be broken down into three separate categories: challenges, the ideals of plentitude, and the four fundamentals or solution towards plentitude. The collection of formal analysis and insight towards key economical concepts and data serves as a concrete foundation for her proposed framework of a sustainable economic and environmental future. In chapter 1, page 12–20, Schor present a series of statements to criticize on the sustainability and concept of the BAU or defined as "business as usual" economy. She emphasizes that the BAU economy will yield less of a return in profitability in the coming decades with a possibility towards economic stagnation, and an increase in unemployment rate as a result of industrial decline in profitability. Furthermore, she illustrates how there will be an increase in environmental pollution and damages to the world, and scarcities in resources due to abnormal climate change in relation to the profitability of natural resource industries such as agriculture and so forth. Throughout chapter 2 and 3, Schor condemns the notion of BAU growth and a higher GDP. She presents an "Ecological Footprint, Carbon Footprint, and Biocapacity" on page 60, and breaks down the basis of the "Environmental Kuznet Curve (EKC)" on page 73–75. Through the analysis of these figures, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Trouble With Wilderness By Norton 533 William Cronon, "The Trouble with Wilderness" Norton 533 William Cronon's work on environmental philosophy The Trouble with Wilderness is most perceptive work ever produced. It has thoughtful impacts for everyone who revolves around the discussion of the environment. The Cronon argues that individuals have to change the way of our thinking about wilderness. Cronon's article Getting back to wrong nature or the trouble with wilderness describes that the wilderness, as individuals see, has no direct relativity to nature. He is of the opinion that people have excluded nature from their Western Culture. The main idea of Cronon's text is that people can find a solution of their environmental disturbance if they stop thinking of wilderness as "a dualistic picture in which the human is completely outside the nature" (Cronon). The concept of wilderness in people's mind was of an aggressive and horrifying desert. The author argues the issues and troubles with wilderness by using the frontier and sublime thoughts. The author argues that there are two primary thoughts that explain this evolution: the sublime and the frontier. The sublime is about the idealistic origin of a wonderful site that stimulates the inner reflexes. In his article, he wrote about sublime landscape. In his opiniom, it is a place where "one might meet devils and run the risk of losing one's soul, but one might also meet God". This religious thought of wilderness was an embryonic thought (Cronon). • 40. Footprints In The Ecological Sand Footprints in the Ecological Sand: An Evaluation of my Personal Consumption My Score An 'ecological footprint' is defined by Wackernagel and Rees (1998) as the area of land needed to support a particular lifestyle. After taking the 'ecological footprint calculator' (http://www.wwf.org.au/footprint_calculator/), my result was 2.08 planets. This result surprised me as because I need more planets than the one we have, then my result and by extension my lifestyle, is not sustainable. Consumption in Relation to my Score A main aspect evaluated by an environmental footprint calculator is consumption. The footprint calculator evaluated my differed consumption in the following areas: food, materials, shelter and mobility. Slater (1997) reasons ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ecological footprint calculator comprises both personal and societal impacts. It is easier to pick and choose which foods, transport and goods we consume through lifestyle choices than control societal impacts or services such as the government aid, healthcare, infrastructure and roads. Generally citizens are allocated their share of societal impacts by the government. The societal impact, as part of our footprints, generally does not vary. And, as Dietz, Rosa and York (2007) state, therefore in certain countries it is not possible to reduce your footprint below one planet. Consequently, if we wanted to achieve full sustainability, our focus needs to shift towards changing our own lifestyle as well as swaying our governments. If I were to make considerable changes to my individual behavior, an important portion of my personal footprint comes from within the government's control– the way infrastructure is constructed, goods are produced and the government ... • 41. The Impact Of Climate Change And Global Warming I. Environmental Issues What is climate change? Climate change and global warming are two phases that can be used interchangeably because they both reflect the strong warming trends that scientist have observing over the past century. Climate change occurs when the usual weather for a region switches to the opposite and this can cause concerns with regional and global food production and security. Food is one of society's key sensitives to climate (Clark, 2012) and the impact of climate change on a global scale will affect the way food is grown and the availability of food for everyone. For example, in the winter of 2015, New England experienced record–breaking cold and snowstorms and in the Pacific Northwest, it was the complete opposite with unusual warmth. If the climate continues to change, plant biodiversity and animal life that are native to one region could become extinct or it will have to adapt. In Ohio, cool water species of fish such as walleye, yellow perch, northern pike, muskies and white bass may struggle with the warmer water temperatures pushing them northward. With the rising warmer waters, species such as largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, carp, white perch, bluegill and channel catfish populations would stay here in Lake Erie as warmer water would suit them best ("Sandusky Register", 2017). Fish such as striped bass may be able to establish in the Great Lakes via the St. Lawrence Seaway ("Sandusky Register", 2017) just like the white perch did 40 years ago. II. Human Impact The United Nations estimates that one in nine people in the world do not have access to sufficient food to lead a healthy lifestyle ("The Environmental Impact of Food Waste According", 2016) and nearly one–third of the food produced in the world is wasted and lost for various reasons. Food loss and waste can cause a huge economical loss and cause severe damage to the world. Food loss happens especially on the manufacturing degree due to natural calamities, loss of proper infrastructure and negative practices while food waste normally happens when people purchase food, food that has expired and people who intentionally discards edible food. When food is wasted and goes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
