Principal Approach of PreSEIS On-Site
: Principal approach of PreSEIS On–site. (a) The algorithm uses the logarithmic values of the
integrated absolute amplitudes of acceleration, velocity, and displacement waveform time series ,
and u(t) at a single sensor, as well as VS30 site characterization. Outputs are (1)simple
earthquake/noise discrimination and near/far source classification, and estimates of (2) the moment
magnitude M, (3) the epicentral distance Δ, and (4) the PGV. All estimates are updated with
progressing time t0. (b) PreSEIS On–site uses two–layer–feed–forward (TLFF) neural networks
composed of simple processing units arranged in input layers, hidden layers, and output layers. Ten
TLFF networks, which form a so–called committee, are trained on the same task (e.g., the prediction
of M) using slightly different training datasets; the median value taken over the outputs of all 10
TLFF networks defines the output of PreSEIS On–site. (Böse et al. 2012)
2.9 UrEDAS:
UrEDAS is an EEW system operational in Japan along the Shinkansen lines since 1992. UrEDAS
estimates source parameters in real time from the data collected at a single station without the need
for storage. The main functions of UrEDAS are estimation of the earthquake location, magnitude,
vulnerability assessment and issuing of warning if required. Like all other EEW systems UrEDAS
uses the initial P wave motion for the estimation of the source parameters. UrEDAS recognises a P

Developing Technology And Integrated Hsr System
China, by far, has the largest existing HSR network, followed by Japan, France, Spain and Germany.
China also has the most ambitious expansion plans, with the most kilometers of lines currently
under construction and the most planned. Spain is also undergoing an HSR construction and
planning boom, with France and Turkey also notably having ambitious HSR expansion plans.
If it is assumed that expansion proceeds as planned, in the next few decades, China will have the
largest HSR network, with Spain and France in a distant second and third, both surpassing Japan in
total system size. Overall, Japan has the most developed and integrated HSR system, being the first
country to develop the technology and make it commercially available in 1964. ... Show more

France has the fastest tested time for a non–maglev, steel–wheeled train, at 574 km/h. It is a matter
of history that H Neuvon, who was a member of the Japanese delegation (1960) visiting France
about the 25kV overhead traction system and played an important role in the first Shinkansen, was
closely associated with the Indian Railways in introducing the Rajdhani Express trains. While IR is
still stuck at the 1964 determined 130 kmph restriction, the Japanese have already migrated to
double the speed already.
China, while being a newcomer to HSR, has very rapidly expanded its HSR system and has some of
the most ambitious plans, by far, of any country for HSR expansion within the country and across
the entire Asian continent. In contrast, the United States as a whole has only just recently, with the
endorsement and backing of President Obama, begun an effort to develop HSR by allotting funds
for the exploration, planning, and in some cases, building of regional HSR systems.
Having said this, part of the current efforts to develop HSR includes funding projects, such the one
in California, connecting Sacramento to L.A., which have been in the planning phases for some time

This means that unlike other methods of damping, such as constrained layer damping, the dynamic
response and material properties are unaffected by its addition into the system. Furthermore, many
applications require a damping system that will not degrade in performance over time. This is not
the case for other viscous dampers; for instance, many dampers require a viscous liquid which may
leak over time. These two points are just a few of the many advantages offered by eddy current
damping systems. The most widely researched and well–developed area of eddy current damping
systems falls in the category of magnetic braking. While the research in this area will be thoroughly
discussed, the literature is very dense and every paper cannot be reviewed. The work in magnetic
braking will be presented first, followed by studies into eddy current damping of rotating machinery,
and finally a wide range of research using eddy currents for dynamic systems will be presented. The
concept of using eddy currents for damping purposes has been known for a considerable time, with
manuscripts dating to the late 1800s. Therefore, the history of the eddy current damper will not be
presented and only work from the past few decades will be revilements are generated in the

How Could Magnetically Levitated Trains Relieve the...
Introduction
Transportation is one of the most essential spheres of human's life in such aspects as economic
growth, communication, tourism, and utilization of space. Thence, it is very important for it to have
minimal effect on the environment, be safe, cheap, comfortable, and fast in use. Conventional
transport, such as trains and airplanes, causes a number of problems including air pollution, high
amounts of energy consumption, huge need of maintenance, high prices, and risks of safety, thus not
being efficient enough. Therefore, new generation of transport must correspond to definite
requirements: be efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound. The technology of the new kind of
transport – magnetically levitated trains – could be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, according to Figure 2, the amount of CO2 increases with the rise of speed. Conventional
trains are also not efficient in economic aspect, since there is a demand for constant maintenance
(Figure 1), such as periodic replacement of gear, wheels, rails, etc., which may lead to huge financial
expenses. Figure 1. Comparison of Maglev and Wheel–On–Rail Systems. Source: H.–W. Lee, Kim,
and J. Lee 2006, 1917. Figure 2. The Energy Consumption of a Train Calculated for Different
Speeds and its CO2 –Emissions per Passengers. Source: Garcia, 2010, 41.
Air transport is constructed to be faster and more convenient than trains, however there are also
several burdens that are associated with airplanes. The most important aircraft problem is vast fuel
utilization – European Commission 2009 indicates that airplanes have huge CO2 emission – 51.5
gram per passenger–kilometer. In addition, serious risks of safety usually worry people, for instance,
there is a recent loss of Boeing–777 airplane with all the passengers, which is usually considered to
be very safe, and still cannot be found (Ranter 2014). Airplanes are also very dependent on weather
conditions, – as can be seen on Figure 3, number of delays lead to considerably high financial
expenses – more than 7 billions in 2012. Figure 3. Annual and Per–Minute Cost of Delays to U.S.

Texas Central Railway Pros And Cons
The Central Railway will make the trip either from Dallas to Houston or Houston to Dallas a much
faster and more enjoyable trip. The high speed of the train will make a trip that could be 4 hours
down to about "90 minutes by 2021" (Formby). The faster travel will lessen traffic to a dramatic
difference. Besides being a fast train, this form of transportation will be environmentally safe. The
Central Railway "consumes 1/8th less energy per seat and expends 1/12th carbon dioxide than a
Boeing B777–200*" (Texas Central). Jere Thompson Jr. who has served on transportation

In Europe, "Japan's Tokaido Shinkansen system" of the fast railway has had "no fatalities or injuries
due to train accidents" (Texas Central). The fast travel train in Europe was portrayed to Texas as
safe, quick, and enjoyable. Texas has gained knowledge from Europe's train to make sure the train
will have the latest technologies and safety to Texas Central Railway (Texas Central). Therefore,
making the drive and the experience of visiting the two cities will not only be more enjoyable but
safer.
The high–speed train in Japan has shown researchers in the United States what the future holds if
Texas develops high–speed train travel. The quicker train will allow tourists to travel between
different cities without having to get on a plane to travel and without the hassle of dealing with
airport security, parking, luggage transport, and lengthy layovers. High–speed travel on the Texas
Central Railway system will support the economy as it has in Japan (Texas Central). The two cities

A Report On Growth Of Japan From The Post War Period
A report on growth of Japan from the post war period to present This report explores the rapid
growth in Japanese economy after the Second World War and how the growth would affect the
Gross Domestic Product. The Solow Growth Model was used to explain the catching up theory on
Japan's economy and showed ways to recover the economy after the disaster in 2011. Background
Japan is the second largest developed economy and the third biggest in the free market economy
among the world. Facing the intense competition, Japan decided to transform and focus their
industry from agriculture and low–tech manufacturing to high–technology and precision goods (e.g.
optical instruments and hybrid vehicles) sectors in 1970s to resolve the on–going crisis. Japan had
become a wealthy country and moved from a less developed country into a more developed country
by the end of 1980s and successfully transformed itself into a high–technology region in 1990.
Hence they have the largest electronics industry in the world. Japan's economy is well known for its
efficiency and competitiveness in exports sectors. However the productivity is lower in segments
such as agriculture, distribution and services. (Blomstrom et al., 2000) After World War II, Japan
had a strong economic growth in which their economy experienced a period of rapid growth as
Japan implemented various political and economic reform measures. After 1958, the government
began to guide the organisations' production focus on automobiles,

Japan's Power In The United States
Currently in the world there are 196 countries, each one with unique qualities and political
structures. Japan is an island nation in East Asia that is located in the Pacific Ocean. It has a total of
6, 852 islands that make up about ninety seven percent of Japan's land area. It is the world's tenth
largest population with 126 million people. The emperor ran the country until it was forced to
surrender and the United States assisted in the reform of the country. Currently, Japan is a
democracy with a constitution that used the structure of the United States as a model. It uses the
three–branch system, however, one of its branches drastically outweighs the other two in regards to

A new constitution took affect in 1947; establishing a parliamentary system, with all adults eligible
to vote and the emperor became mostly a symbolic head of state (Infoplease). United States troops
were stationed in Japan because of a security treaty that was signed between the two countries in
1951 (Infoplease). However, in 1952, Japan regained full sovereignty and the Ryuku Islands,
including Okinawa, were returned by the United States (Infoplease). During this time, the Liberal
Democratic Party was formed (BBC). This party will govern the country, almost uninterruptedly, for
the rest of the century and beyond (BBC). Also during this time, United States servicemen raped an
Okinawa schoolgirl causing mass protest demanding the removal of United States forces from the
island (BBC). Japan had an extraordinary postwar economic recovery and continued to grow
through the 1970s and 1980s until it was the world's second largest economy (after the United
States) (Infoplease). Because of scandals involving leaders of industry, government officials and
bankers, Japan suffered in the Asian economic crisis in 1998, (Infoplease). In 2009, the Democratic
Party of Japan won the general election and ended the unbroken rule of the Liberal Democratic
Party (BBC). Also, in 2009, it faced the worst economic crisis since World War II because its
economy shrank by 3.3% (BBC). However, it started to grow in 2010 but China overtook Japan as

JR Rail Pass
The Japan Railway (JR) is the main railway company that owns and operates the once government
owned. They offer a rail pass called the JR Rail Pass, for tourists visiting Japan. Users can use
almost all JR line's trains for an unlimited amount of times. JR also owns and operates around 70%
of Japan's railway network. The pass are divided in six different passes. First the passes are grouped
in three different travel lengths, they are 7, 14 & 21 days. These then are all divided up into two
classes, Green (which is first class) and the regular–class passes.
Enhanced Travel & Modernization (Advantage)
One of the many points why Japan is popular is because of its modernization and evolved

In 2015, three of the groups, East, West and Central saw increases to their profits.
"Sales at East Japan Railway Co. grew 4 percent from the year before to ¥2.8 trillion, with operating
profit of ¥487 billion, up 14.1 percent. Sales increased 4 percent to ¥1.7 trillion at Central Japan
Railway Co. Operating profit expanded 14.2 percent to ¥578 billion. West Japan Railway Co. saw
its sales rise 7.5 percent to ¥1.4 trillion and its operating profit surge 29.9 percent to ¥181 billion."
(Jiji, 2016).
And these can go towards the future building of more subway lines and rails for easier, faster,
enhanced trains. Making the stations and in general Japan more appealing to visit. The amount of
money that is made from these passes boost the tourism industry with more and more people visiting
and buying these tickets.
Closing
With more and more people visiting Japan, and more and more people using the rail passes, more
and more stations will be maintained and upgraded. This means that not only will tourists be able to
use these great forms of transportation, the citizens of the communities will get better trains and
better stations because of all the people coming. Because of the industry needing these upgrades and
upkeep, the everyday transit user will get better facilities for them to use. Newer and better and

Yutaka Nakamura in 1979, working under RTRI (Railway Technical Research Institute) of JNR,
developed a new idea for EEW system and called it UrEDAS, Urgent Earthquake Detection and
Alarm System. The main UrEDAS functions are the estimation of magnitude and location,
vulnerability assessment and issuing warnings within a few seconds using initial P–wave motion at a
single station. UrEDAS calculates parameters such as back azimuth, predominant frequency for
magnitude evaluation and vertical–to–horizontal ratio for discrimination between P and S waves,
using the amplitude for each sample in realtime. UrEDAS can issue a P–wave warning with a
processing time of just three seconds after detecting the P–wave. After the 1995 Kobe earthquake, ...

(m/2π).Kd. ab2 Kd = A2/F (3) where m is the mass of the object undergoing seismic acceleration.
The dominant frequency (F) and amplification factor (A) are directly related to the seismic motion
applied to the train body. The dynamic characteristics of the trains are known in general. F and A are
estimated from F g and Ag for a train resting on the ground surface. For a train resting on a
structure, these values are termed as Fsg and Asg for both structures and ground. Site characteristics
are reflected by the Kd–value. In the case of a large Kd–value, work rate (w) and the possibility of
derailment/overturn are also large. The Kd–value was therefore considered as an index of
vulnerability of trains to derailment overturn. As previously mentioned, Kd values for a train
derailment/overturning are directly related to the power of earthquake motion. It has also been
clearly shown that there is a strong relation between K value and damage. Starting from equation
(3), two new parameters PI (P–wave Index) and DI (Damage Intensity) were proposed.
The earthquake destructiveness is estimated with the help of the power density PD (W/kg) of the
earthquake vibration which is calculated from the inner product of the acceleration vector a (cm/s2)
and the velocity vector v

Western Influence on Japan Essays
The new Meiji Period was the starting point for Japan's isolation from foreign countries. During the
end of Edo period, Matthew C. Perry came to Japan and established the Nichi–Bei Washin Joyaku,
the Japan–US Treaty of Amity and Friendship, allowing Japan to be fully open to the United States
of America. Soon after, foreign officials from other countries came to Japan to make similar
friendship treaties, changing Japan to be one of the global nations. From the treaty, Foreigners
started to build homes and live in one of the ports opened to them, creating cultural influence on the
people who had never seen foreigners. Through the opening of Japan during the Meiji Period,

Soon after, the new government publicly allowed consumption of meat for the first time in the
history.
Even though the law allowed the consumption of meat, it did not become instantly a part of
Japanese cuisine until the people knew the nutritional benefit of it. For several hundred years,
Buddhism had forbidden people to eat four legged animals so the people were not familiar with
eating meat. However, due to the lack of beef in the Japanese diet, many people suffered from
illnesses such as Beriberi and a sickness called Nihonbyo. Fish provides high–protein and healthy
nutrition, but meat provides different type of nutrition essential for stronger body that prevents from
these illnesses. With the promotional effort by the educator, Fukuzawa Yukichi, the nutrition
benefits of meat spread and the myths surrounding the impurity of beef were cleared. New recipes
that included meat needed to accommodate Japanese diet in order to naturalize Western food in
Japan. The introduction of Western food dramatically changed how most Japanese household ate
with an introduction of meat. In Japan, Western food is commonly known as Yoshoku, a shortened
form of Sei–Yoshoku. One of the first Yoshoku introduced–was curry. Curry is originally from
India, but the curry introduced in Japan was British style. When Japan was looking for a new naval

Transport
Transport or transportation is the movement of people, animals and goods from one location to
another. Modes of transport include air, rail, road, water, cable, pipeline, and space. The field can be
divided into infrastructure, vehicles, and operations. Transport is important since it enables trade
between peoples, which in turn establishes civilizations.
Transport infrastructure consists of the fixed installations necessary for transport, and may be roads,
railways, airways, waterways, canals and pipelines, and terminals such as airports, railway stations,
bus stations, warehouses, trucking terminals, refueling depots (including fueling docks and fuel
stations), and seaports. Terminals may be used both for interchange of passengers and ... Show more

[edit] Operation
Private transport is only subject to the owner of the vehicle, who operates the vehicle themselves.
For public transport and freight transport, operations are done through private enterprise or by
governments. The infrastructure and vehicles may be owned and operated by the same company, or
they may be operated by different entities. Traditionally, many countries have had a national airline
and national railway. Since the 1980s, many of these have been privatized. International shipping
remains a highly competitive industry with little regulation,[14] but ports can be public owned.[15]
[edit] Function
Relocation of travelers and cargo are the most common uses of transport. However, other uses exist,
such as the strategic and tactical relocation of armed forces during warfare, or the civilian mobility
construction or emergency equipment.
[edit] Passenger
Passenger transport, or travel, is divided into public and private transport. Public is scheduled
services on fixed routes, while private is vehicles that provide ad hoc services at the riders desire.
The latter offers better flexibility, but has lower capacity, and a higher environmental impact. Travel
may be as part of daily commuting, for business, leisure or migration.
Short–haul transport is dominated by the automobile and mass transit. The latter consists of buses in
rural and small cities,

Should High Speed Trains Be Introduced To Australia?
Senior Division – Should high speed trains be introduced to Australia? The high speed trains or
bullet trains, are called Shinkansen. They run at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour. Japan's
main islands of Kyushu, Honshu and Hokkaido are connected by a network of high speed train lines
and they connect Tokyo with most of the country's major cities which are operated by Japan
Railways. The Shinkansen is known for their punctuality, as they depart on time to the second,
comfort, as they have relatively silent cars with spacious, always forward facing seats, safety as they
have no fatal accidents in its history, and efficiency, as it can be a very cost effective means of
travel. Implementing a high speed rail system in Australia would definitely ... Show more content on

economic viability. Japan's maglev train which recently broke a land speed record over 600km/h
during testing does not signify that Australia will or should implement a high speed rail, especially
since Australia is not as technologically advanced. However, Australia may implement a high speed

Why I Would Like To Visit Japan Essay
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world and the key to
unlock golden door for freedom. George Washington Carrer once said:" If IICP were to fully

they had powerful weapons and skillful warriors. At that time, our country is totally being control

bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima and another bomb on Nagasaki. This has changes the
state and history of our country from being colonized towards freedom and independence because

The Tokyo Railway Station Building
The Tokyo railway station building is located in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Japan in the Marunouchi business
district. The station which acts as Tokyo's main intercity terminal is served by the Tokyo Metro
network, Japan Railways' regional commuter lines as well as the Shinkansen high speed railway
lines. The Tokyo Station also has a reputation of being the busiest station in the country, judging by
the number of trains it serves per day; approximately three thousand trains in one day. Furthermore,
the train station has a hotel and gallery within its premises. In terms of architecture and historical
culture, the station actually has a long history that dates back more than a hundred years, thereby
making it one of the one of the few major examples of buildings designed in classical style
remaining in Tokyo, and Japan as a whole.
Chronicle information of the building Even though the Tokyo Station was constructed in 1914, its
actual plan is connected to the history of Japan's rail in the 1880s (Ito n.p). It is therefore viewed by
the Japanese as being significant in the advancement of rail technology and as a symbolic structure
within Japan. By 1885, several railway tracks were already passing through Tokyo, thereby
necessitating the need for a central terminal to be built in the region between Ueno and Shinbashi.
The station which was to accommodate Tokyo's entire network was simply referred to as the
"central terminal" (Ito n.p). The project for the Tokyo Station was first offered

that of Honshu, with colder temperatures, lower rainfall, no rainy season, few typhoons, and a much

in premodern Japan, but modern cold–resistant strains will grow there and it now produces large
quantities of rice as well as live stock, dairies produce, fish, potatoes and other crops. About ninety
percent of Japan's pastureland is found in Hokkaido and nearly as much of its dairy produce comes

High Speed Rail ( Hsr )
Abstract High speed rail (HSR) is a rapidly expanding new transport mode all over the world and is
often described as the "transport mode of the future". This paper discusses definitions of high speed
rail, provides an overview of high speed rail development in selected other countries and regions. It
then analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of HSR in several different aspects, such as
mobility, choice, environmental, safety, cost and regional feasibility. Based on the opportunities
presented by these features of HSR to learn, the article will provide recommendations and
conclusions regarding to the future development of HSR. Introduction What is High Speed Rail?
Although there is no universal and authoritative speed definition for High Speed Rail (HSR), the
threshold can be found in many administrations or official organizations. For instance, the European
Union defines HSR as: Separate lines built for speeds of 250 kilometers per hour (kph) (150 mph),
or Existing lines upgraded to speeds of 200 kph (125 mph), or Upgraded lines whose speeds are
constrained by circumstances such as topography or urban development. High Speed Rail in the
World The world's first high speed rail line, between Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, was built in time for
the 1964 Olympics. Known as the Shinkansen, or bullet trains, this high speed rail travels across the
country at speeds up to 185 mile per hour, expending the traffic capacity on overcrowded rail lines.

We would keep it tightly regulated and only the
upmost security would be kept.
A high speed rail system would be a good idea for many reasons. Primarily, it would cut down on
the amount of people who drive or fly. In 1997 the government issued a report about how high speed
trains would help solve congestion problems that face our nation's highways and airports
(www.fra.dot.gov/o/hsgt/index.html). Also, most high speed trains require less fuel than your
average airplane or automobile.
Money left over form the tax, or if we choose to continue the tax just for this purpose, would be
used to help fund research on alternative fuels. They have already made a great many advances with
alternative fuels and hybrid cars. Honda has already made a that can travel up to 700 miles on one
tank of gas. And it can get up to 70 mpg on the highway
(www.consumerenergycenter.org/transportation/afv/hybrid.html). This kind of progress has all been
done within the last decade. Imagine with a little extra funding the progress that could be made.
Imagine, driving down the road, getting about 100 to 150 mpg. You would no longer have to even
worry about gas prices because you would only have to fill up about once a month, which leads me
to the next reason why raising gas prices would be a good idea.
If we raise gas prices now it'll mean a lot lower prices later on. Simple math will

Essay about Cleaner Alternative Transportation
When people think pollution, most think straight to automobiles producing harmful emissions which
contribute to global warming or climate change. Well, this is true. Motor vehicles account for about
half of the toxic air pollutant emissions in the United States. A large part of these toxic air pollutants
is the need to rely on oil as a fuel source. The fact that oil is still the main source of energy for
things like automobiles, when there are other alternatives like electric vehicles, creates many
problems within our society. The United States' dependency on oil causes incidents like the

Automobiles have since evolved and become almost a necessity for people. While they have become
of major importance, they also hold many drawbacks to our environment. They are the leading cause
of transportation emissions and they generate a majority of America's global warming emissions.
Even though air pollution emissions from motor vehicles have dropped considerably since 1950,
Automobiles still produce about 60% of US transportation emissions and generate nearly 30% of
America's global warming emissions (Car Emissions and Global Warming). The average
conventional automobile can be seen as fairly gas inefficient. Compared to a hybrid electric vehicle,
conventional cars produce about 1.5 times more greenhouse gas emissions and costs more in fuel
costs. Within a 100–mile trip, conventional vehicles produce about 87 lb CO2, hybrid electric
vehicles produce 57 lb CO2, plug–in hybrid electric vehicles produce 62 lb CO2, and all–electric
vehicles produce 54 lb CO2 (see table 1). This shows that hybrid and electric cars produce less
greenhouse gas emissions and costs less for fuel, compared to a conventional pure gas powered
vehicle.

Government's Role in Setting Policty in Maylasia
1.0 Introduction "Governments will always play a huge part in solving big problems. They set
public policy and are uniquely able to provide the resources to make sure solutions reach everyone
who needs them. They also fund basic research, which is a crucial component of the innovation that
improves life for everyone." (Bill Gates). Malaysia sought its independence in 1957 though faced
with many trials and tribulations. In 1957, Malaysia faced the problem of consolidating a nation
with a multiracial society characterised by socio–economic and cultural differences. Furthermore,
the emergency period lasting until 1960 posed a threat that called for bravery, fortitude and sacrifice
on the part of all Malaysians to overcome. The birth of Malaysia in 1963 brought in another period

relationships. The success and strength of the partnership can be attributed to the commonly held
values of both countries, including a commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law,
along with similar approaches to international security. Japan forms Australia's second–largest
export market and third–largest source of foreign investment. Australia is a critical supplier to Japan
of clean and safe food products as well as minerals and energy. Trade relations between the two
nations were recently given legal recognition and force with the ratification of the Japan Australia
Economic Partnership Agreement (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, 2014). 1. Population
and demographics Japan has a significantly higher population density in comparison to Australia.
Japan's population is an estimated 126.66 million people. The population is estimated to be 126.66
million people, which decreased at about 0.89% from the last record of population (World
Population Statistics, 2013). The majority of Japan's population is comprised of the Yamoto
Japanese ethnicity. They make up approximately 98.5% of the population, followed by people of
Korean ethnicity, and with some representation from the Chinese and Japanese Indigenous peoples.
Japanese is the official spoken language of the country, with 99% of the population conversant in
Japanese. Widely used written languages

China also has the most ambitious expansion plans, with the most kilometers of lines currently under construction and the most planned. Spain is also undergoing an HSR construction and planning boom, with France and Turkey also notably having ambitious HSR expansion plans. If it is assumed that expansion proceeds as planned, in the next few decades, China will have the largest HSR network, with Spain and France in a distant second and third, both surpassing Japan in total system size. This means that unlike other methods of damping, such as constrained layer damping, the dynamic response and material properties are unaffected by its addition into the system. Furthermore, many applications require a damping system that will not degrade in performance over time. This is not the case for other viscous dampers; for instance, many dampers require a viscous liquid which may leak over time. These two points are just a few of the many advantages offered by eddy current damping systems. The most widely researched and well–developed area of eddy current damping systems falls in the category of magnetic braking. While the research in this area will be thoroughly discussed, the literature is very dense and every paper cannot be reviewed. The work in magnetic braking will be presented first, followed by studies into eddy current damping of rotating machinery, and finally a wide range of research using eddy currents for dynamic systems will be presented. The concept of using eddy currents for damping purposes has been known for a considerable time, with manuscripts dating to the late 1800s. Therefore, the history of the eddy current damper will not be presented and only work from the past few decades will be revilements are generated in the conductor. Cadwell, ... Introduction Transportation is one of the most essential spheres of human's life in such aspects as economic growth, communication, tourism, and utilization of space. Thence, it is very important for it to have minimal effect on the environment, be safe, cheap, comfortable, and fast in use. Conventional transport, such as trains and airplanes, causes a number of problems including air pollution, high amounts of energy consumption, huge need of maintenance, high prices, and risks of safety, thus not being efficient enough. Therefore, new generation of transport must correspond to definite requirements: be efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound. Air transport is constructed to be faster and more convenient than trains, however there are also several burdens that are associated with airplanes. The most important aircraft problem is vast fuel utilization – European Commission 2009 indicates that airplanes have huge CO2 emission – 51.5 gram per passenger–kilometer. In addition, serious risks of safety usually worry people, for instance, there is a recent loss of Boeing–777 airplane with all the passengers, which is usually considered to be very safe, and still cannot be found (Ranter 2014). Airplanes are also very dependent on weather conditions, – as can be seen on Figure 3, number of delays lead to considerably high financial expenses – more than 7 billions in 2012. Figure 3. • 20. A Report On Growth Of Japan From The Post War Period A report on growth of Japan from the post war period to present This report explores the rapid growth in Japanese economy after the Second World War and how the growth would affect the Gross Domestic Product. The Solow Growth Model was used to explain the catching up theory on Japan's economy and showed ways to recover the economy after the disaster in 2011. Background Japan is the second largest developed economy and the third biggest in the free market economy among the world. Facing the intense competition, Japan decided to transform and focus their industry from agriculture and low–tech manufacturing to high–technology and precision goods (e.g. optical instruments and hybrid vehicles) sectors in 1970s to resolve the on–going crisis. Japan had become a wealthy country and moved from a less developed country into a more developed country by the end of 1980s and successfully transformed itself into a high–technology region in 1990. Hence they have the largest electronics industry in the world. Japan's economy is well known for its efficiency and competitiveness in exports sectors. However the productivity is lower in segments such as agriculture, distribution and services. (Blomstrom et al., 2000) After World War II, Japan had a strong economic growth in which their economy experienced a period of rapid growth as Japan implemented various political and economic reform measures. The dominant frequency (F) and amplification factor (A) are directly related to the seismic motion applied to the train body. The dynamic characteristics of the trains are known in general. F and A are estimated from F g and Ag for a train resting on the ground surface. For a train resting on a structure, these values are termed as Fsg and Asg for both structures and ground. Site characteristics are reflected by the Kd–value. In the case of a large Kd–value, work rate (w) and the possibility of derailment/overturn are also large. The Kd–value was therefore considered as an index of vulnerability of trains to derailment overturn. As previously mentioned, Kd values for a train derailment/overturning are directly related to the power of earthquake motion. It has also been clearly shown that there is a strong relation between K value and damage. Starting from equation (3), two new parameters PI (P–wave Index) and DI (Damage Intensity) were proposed. The station which acts as Tokyo's main intercity terminal is served by the Tokyo Metro network, Japan Railways' regional commuter lines as well as the Shinkansen high speed railway lines. The Tokyo Station also has a reputation of being the busiest station in the country, judging by the number of trains it serves per day; approximately three thousand trains in one day. Furthermore, the train station has a hotel and gallery within its premises. In terms of architecture and historical culture, the station actually has a long history that dates back more than a hundred years, thereby making it one of the one of the few major examples of buildings designed in classical style remaining in Tokyo, and Japan as a whole. Chronicle information of the building Even though the Tokyo Station was constructed in 1914, its actual plan is connected to the history of Japan's rail in the 1880s (Ito n.p). It is therefore viewed by the Japanese as being significant in the advancement of rail technology and as a symbolic structure within Japan. By 1885, several railway tracks were already passing through Tokyo, thereby necessitating the need for a central terminal to be built in the region between Ueno and Shinbashi. In 1997 the government issued a report about how high speed trains would help solve congestion problems that face our nation's highways and airports (www.fra.dot.gov/o/hsgt/index.html). Also, most high speed trains require less fuel than your average airplane or automobile. Money left over form the tax, or if we choose to continue the tax just for this purpose, would be used to help fund research on alternative fuels.
