Gender Bias Of Becoming A Leader
Key issues research brief set out to address are the gender bias in becoming a leader. Several key
findings are that man over emerge as leaders in over emerge as leaders in self managing teams while
women emerge as leaders once engaged in more agentic behaviors. One interesting finding revealed
that gender roles did not matter when individuals engaged in social behaviors in fact man and
women under–emerged as leaders, because social behaviors were not considerate as leadership traits
by the groups.
The article addresses the gender role inequality in pursuing leadership positions, trough out our class
time on several occasions we touch upon gender inequality, gender related traits and how to
influence some behaviors to promote gender equality (negotiations topic, communications, etc.)
Most importantly I would like to discuss the current gender inequality situation in the world. We all
know the good old saying "if you do not include women in your daily activity 50% of your
populations intellectual wealth is eliminated". Although this is a common understanding amongst all
in modern society yet it lacks the practical application. There are ample research articles that outline
the wage and leadership inequality amongst genders but there are no concrete articles or suggestions
how eliminate gender bias. The research findings reveal general idea of what can be done to solve
the leadership gender inequality by suggesting activities for women to engage that would positively

Gender Bias In The United States
Throughout the history of the United States, gender bias has been and still is an immense concern.
Women have been at the forefront of such prejudice. For several centuries, women have battled for
equity in their everyday lives, academically, and professionally. The push for justice has been a slow
process, with incremental gains. Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a
curriculum that would support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males.
Women were identified as the homemakers and their essential duties only entailed domestic skills.
There were several ideas that contributed to the connotation of gender bias of women. Notions such
as educated women were dangerous to society, their mental and physical well–being were at risk if
subjected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The differences in the interaction between teachers and their male and female students are vastly
different. Teachers have a tendency to be ignorant of their contribution to the continual trouble of
obtaining gender equity. A teacher should be studying their students, just as must as a student is
required to learn from teachers lessons. Constant awareness of classroom interactions is
fundamental to develop and model equity that is beneficial to supporting each student's ability to be
successful. In more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our
country back into segregation. Single–sex education has resurfaced; jeopardizing the gains our
ancestors fought so hard for. A few people believe that the biological make–up between genders is
significantly different, that having coeducational classes is doing more harm than good. Conversely,
there is no proven study that supports these claims; however studies have displayed the exact
opposite. Separating genders within the educational system will only perpetuate and magnify

Rhetorical Analysis On Gender Bias
Questions for Rhetorical Analysis
1. What historical occasion gives rise to the need for investigation and the creation of this text?
Gender Bias is being taught and occurs unintentionally in our schools. Teachers challenge boys
more than girls. Sexism is so elusive, it is being taught every day and educators are not even aware
they are doing it.
2. Does the author come across as knowledgeable? fair? Does the speaker's reputation convey a
certain authority?
Author(s) have many case studies, two decades of research, grants for programs, hours of classroom
observation and statistical information as evidence.
There seemed to be some bias towards the male gender, there was not enough information disclosed
about the demographics of the schools or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
9. What is the structure of the article; how is it arranged? What effect does the structure of the article
have, and does this aid or hinder the author's intention?
The structure of the article would be Cause and Effect, the article points out serious issues and
blames gender bias. The writer explains how being gender bias affects girls, especially in education.
The writer could have went more into the cause and effect gender bias has on boys. Teachers might
have reason to specifically pay more attention to boys, maybe to keep them engaged. The teacher
might know the girls are fine when she turns her back. The rotten boy in the back might whip a
spitball at her if she turns her back on the boys, and she knows it. (This was only added for humor)
A teacher with gender bias might unintentionally effect how a class participates, if girls are never
called during a discussion, they will probably quit raising their hands.

Gender Bias On The Classroom
Gender Bias In The Classroom Gender roles are widely accepted societal expectations about how
males and females should behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). Gender roles create a difference in the
way that masculine and feminine behaviors are accepted among society. Gender roles are often
depicted as just a part of who a person is and help better define the difference between male and
female. When society begins to use these gender roles as norms we often see those who don't fit into
the correct role become ostracized by society. When these gender roles become rigid they can
become gender stereotypes. These stereotypes are fixed and oversimplified beliefs about the way in
which men and women ought to behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). One of the most common gender
stereotypes is that men are the breadwinners and women are the homemakers. These stereotypes
also carry into emotions as well, women being more likely to feel sadness, fear and sympathy, while
men are more likely to feel anger and pride. Another area where gender stereotypes can be observed
is in the work place with women taking jobs such as nursing and teaching, and men holding jobs in
fields like medicine and law. (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). There are many physical, cognitive,
personality, and behavioral differences between genders. Physically men and women have different
primary and secondary sex characteristics. The primary sex characteristics are the organs of the
reproductive system where women have ovaries and men

Gender Bias In Sports Media
Sport media is no different from any other profession. There is gender bias in this field. Due to
sexism, it makes it hard for women to even enter into the career path they desire most. There are
many factors when it comes to gender bias, especially in sport media. Women are at a disadvantage
in the field of sport media. Before 1978, female reporters were not allowed to interview players in
the locker room before and after games (Clapp). It was not until 1978, when a female reporter
decided enough was enough. In 1978, Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke sued the New York
Yankees for banning her from entering the locker room to interview players during the 1977 World
Series (Clapp). This case went to federal court and the judge decided that banning female reporters
violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution
(Clapp). The Equal Protection Clause demands that the states "must treat an individual in the same
manner as others in similar conditions and circumstances" (LII Staff). Since women reporters were
not allowed in locker rooms and men were, then this was a direct violation because women and male
reporters were in the locker rooms for the same reasons. In the business of sport and as a sport
manager, women being treated unfairly in sport media is something that needs to be addressed by
fining and suspending those coaches, players and anybody involved with a sport organization who
make sexist remarks toward women

Gender Pay Bias
The Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed gender discrimination
(Macionis, 2012). That is, employers cannot discriminate when setting pay for men and women
(Macionis, 2012). Although these laws exist in the United States, median wages for women amounts
to seventy–nine percent of median wages for men (Hirschfeld Davis, 2016). As a result, President
Barack Obama signed an executive law that will close gender pay gap with mandatory reporting and
penalize companies that engage in discriminatory pay practices (Hirschfeld Davis, 2016).
According to Macionis (2012), gender biases affects how women are promoted in the workplace.
This is a form of glass ceiling, which is the "subtle discrimination that effectively blocks

Gender Bias In The Women's Rights Movement
In this society, men have more privileges than women in the workplace. It is true the world we live
in today has many opportunities for women. Women can vote, have their own property, have jobs
like men, etc. However, there is not much equality between men and women working. Women are
often worse paid than men with few rights, which is one of many examples of gender bias. Gender
bias is the unequal treatment between men and women in the employment area, based on their
gender expectations. It turns out gender bias exists especially in the workplace. According to
TechRepublic, unequal pay, diminished responsibilities, and positional bias are emphasized for
women working.1 These examples of gender bias go back all the way to before when women's
rights were fought for. Women then had a basic education, they were generally married off by their
parents, they had to take care of their children and the house, which their husbands owned, and they
were not acknowledged of their hard work. That all began to change when the 1848 Seneca Falls
Women's Rights Convention triggered the beginning of the Women's Rights Movement in the
United States. Individualists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony have been devoted
to the fight for women's rights.2 Changing the unjust and unequal society was their purpose.
Through petitions, meetings, and public speaking, they were able to achieve their purpose. Margaret
Mead, an anthropologist said, "Never doubt that a small group of

Gender Bias In The Workplace Essay
In today's society, we are faced with many challenges in the workforce. It can be as simple as the
initial trial of finding a job, or getting along with our coworkers. Not many individuals are jumping
at the opportunity to complain about work, since our economy is continuously going through up's
and down's as is. Once we finish our education and are out in the "real world", our expectations
conclude that people have reached maturity, and that stereotyping and discrimination cease to exist.
But it is from my own personal experience that I have found this is in fact, not the case, and that
harassment in the workplace is a very real issue. Primarily, I am researching the way media portrays
gender–biases in the workplace, and why they are relevant. Additionally, I am looking at which
occupations might lead to higher levels of emotional stress related to gender inequality for women,
and to what historical events or patterns may have manifested these inequalities. My goal is to
provide specific examples of sexism towards women in the workplace, and I will be demonstrating
how feminist theorists discuss the topic of inequality at work. Starting out in the working world is
always a nerve–wracking point in one's life. Once hired, you have certain expectations to uphold,
expectations on deadlines, work performance, and interpersonal performance. By dealing with the
additional burden of harassment in the workforce, one is bound to have a harder time satisfying
these expectations.

Gender Bias And Gender Inequality
The average american female only makes ⅔ of what the average male does. Whether it is in school,
or the workforce, gender inequality still exists and is a major problem. There is still a huge
difference in the way women get treated compared to the way men get treated. Due to the invisible
barrier that is holding back the success of women, social realities need to be redefined in order for
gender inequality to longer exist. Gender inequality refers to the unequal rights, responsibilities and
opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. There are three main ideas that contribute to it,
but there are still many others that do too. One of them is sexism, which refers to the range of
attitudes, beliefs, policies, laws, and behaviors that discriminate on the basis of gender. A second
idea that also contributes is gender roles. Gender roles are rights, responsibilities, expectations, and
relationships of men and women in a society. The third idea is gender bias, which is the favoritism
toward one gender or the other. All three have a direct correlation with each other. Gender inequality
is most common at school and in the workforce. A lot of people seems to think men hold a higher
rank in life than women do just because they think women cannot do the same things a man can do.
Just because the the anatomy of a woman and a man are different, doesn't mean one or the other
should get better treatment, but that is still a reality women face today. Men have access to many

Question: – The problem which are being faced in India and the gender bias in the "healthcare
sector" of India
India is a developing country and we all know that India is still in a health crisis. Although, India
has been awarded a 'Polio–free' status by an official certificate by the World Health Organization
(WHO), we still occupy 2nd position when it comes to population and the 112th position in sex ratio
out of 190 countries . With this data we can assess the condition of healthcare in India. The
healthcare system is very bad in our country and for a developing country like India, we require that
everyone, at least the work force and the children who are the future of our country should be
healthy, because if we want India to reach at a stage of a developed country then we need to make
sure we have an overall development. One of my findings was a survey conducted by
Dr.C.Chandramouli who is the Registrar general and the census commissioner of India. His survey
was conducted in different states of India but the information I have taken is from the state, Madhya
Pradesh the heart of India. The information was gathered from each and every district in Madhya
Pradesh in form of questioners and in form of the verbal information which had to be gathered
because there are still some villages in India who still don't know how to read or write. The result
which came in front was very

The Null Hypothesis : Gender Bias
2. Null Hypothesis – Gender bias does not have a role to play in people's mind–set towards male
victims.
When asked if DV affects a significant number, small number of men or doesn't affect men, 53.2%
male respondents and 58.6% female respondents think that it affects a small number of men. Only
23.8% male respondents and 31.3% female respondents think a significant number of men are
affected and a further 10.9% male respondents and 10.1% female respondents think it doesn't affect
men. Since the p value show no statistical relationship, there is no difference between how men and

Although men and women show different views, the Cramer's V of 0.154 shows only a weak
association. A bigger sample size could've produced different or more reliable results.
Gender bias is the distortion of views and preferences based on the sex of a person. Biases are
preformed based on what kind of surroundings a person grows up in and their personal experiences.
This bias exists in everyone's mind and subconsciously make people act and react in different ways
based on stereotypes rather than reality (Rhonda. E, Dugan, 2008). Everyone has different views on
male masculinity. Even in this day and age where there are equal rights for both sexes there is a
patriarchal view about men in society, where they are classed as the stronger sex which has led to
the belief that male to female aggression is more serious than female to male aggrrssion (Drijber et
al, 2013). Sexual assaults and DV are disproportionately considered as women centric problems.
Surveys conducted reports victims in rape cases are 90% women, one in four women are a victim of
intimate partner violence and 44% lesbian women and 61% bisexual women have been subjected to
physical abuse by a partner or sexual abuse. (Bureau of Justice Satistics and the centres of Disease
control and prevention (CDC). These facts combined with preformed notions

Examples Of Gender Bias In Julius Caesar
In sexism, gender bias has existed throughout history and still exists today. Gender bias is frequently
called sexism or gender discrimination. "A study by four researchers, Kelly Jones, Cay Evans,
Ronald Byrd, and Kathleen Campbell, analyzed videotapes of teachers while they taught the
students in the classroom, then they had the teachers watch themselves on the video while pointing
out the gender–biased attitudes, languages and behavior; most teachers were surprised to see how
they gave their attention on one gender over the other and the unintentional gender bias happening
in the classroom" (A World of Gender Bias, 2015). Researchers recommended methods for the
teachers to use when having to do an activity to decrease the stereotypical behavior ... Show more

Sexism puts a barrier on what society views as acceptable for a man and woman to do. It also may
be true that men and women are not necessarily equal physically. Men are scientifically proven are
stronger than women physically in terms of muscles and athletic ability. "Men are physically
stronger than women, who have, on the average, less total muscle mass, to the total body mass and
men also have denser, stronger bones, tendons and ligaments" (Burton, 2012). Men tend to be larger
than women in size which makes them tend to carry out more muscles and more muscles normally
points toward having more strength than women. But on the other hand, people should approach
fairness and not equality because sexism has negative impacts on the people which causes them to
commit suicide. In Antigone, Antigone was a strong, courageous and an independent person and
there was no definite evidence that Antigone was strong and brave person but based on what the
readers gather from the play Antigone seems psychologically capable of the things that she did more
than the other characters. "The leading cause of death of women ages 15 to 19 worldwide is suicide
and the most expected reason is sexism and gender discrimination" (Valenti, 2015). In Antigone,
Antigone buries her brother because she believes what she is doing is right so she does it but gets
punished because she did what she believed in which

Gender Bias For Dress Code
"Nineteen percent of the 7,800 students surveyed in middle and high schools across the country said
they were prevented from wearing clothing deemed "inappropriate" based on their gender..."––
CNN Student protests growing over gender–equal dress codes I think that dress code at school is
gender bias because it's female specific, your socioeconomic status will help determine if you get
dress coded or not, boys don't usually get dress coded like girls do, and girls have a harder time
dressing age appropriate. Females are often targeted for dress code because the dress code lists more
restrictions and allocations for females instead of males. "Dress code violations include baring
shoulders, wearing a tank top, or exposing a bra strap." Schools can be petty when getting on to girls
for dress code issues. Neatoday.com says, A female Kentucky student was sent home for showing
her collarbone... her Mom brought a scarf to put around her neck and they still deemed it
inappropriate. I personally do not think showing your collarbone is worth getting in trouble for in
school. "A Texas honor student gets sent home for wearing yoga pants and an oversize tee shirt." I
honestly do not see how yoga pants and an oversized tee shirt would be seen as a distraction. Kids
come to school to learn not to be in trouble because of what they wear. Although there are several
examples of females being singled out based on their attire, there are many instances of females

Gender Bias Essay
Gender bias, also known as sexism, is a full of attitudes, laws, taboos, preferences, and behaviors
that differentiates and discriminates against either sex. These may be a position of which male
dominance and female subjugation in the modern society. It could also be a form of sexual
stereotypes between men and women, these are commonly experienced in employment versus other
positions. A final place that discrimination is faced is the academic environment, the female to male
ratios are not in sync in certain programs and courses because of this and it is pressuring men and
women to not go into certain fields and do what they love and please. Most advertisements on
Television, magazines, newspapers, online ad's, use a charged sexually image with a female as the
star. Women are to be a pleasure for men, and nothing else. Many people have different opinions on
genders and sexuality and that is okay, but sometimes you just need to keep them to yourselves. I
was walking through Walmart with a friend the other night, and we turned the corner to go down an
aisle and they were walking towards us. As we approached them, they moved out of the way, so we
could get through. There were 5 male specimens, around the ages of 20–24, two white, one
Hispanic, and two black guys. Most of them were very tall, both white guys were thin and lean, the
Hispanic guy was short and lean, and the two black guys were tall and thick. All five of the guys
dress in upper class clothes such as Nike, Adidas, Under armor. As I observed these guys, they were
in a group of friends. They were walking according to race, two white guys in the front, and then the
Hispanic guy was in the middle, and following him was the two black guys. They were very
respectful when we turned the corner and let us go through, as we passed them they went back into
their formation. Two white guys in the front, and then the Hispanic in the middle, and the two black
guys in the back. I also observed that they were having separate conversations among themselves.

Gender Bias In The Workplace
Sexism– women still face gender bias in the workplace. The stereotype e.g. women more likely to
take a housekeeping job, secretarial tasks or even be look at taking notes at a college meeting.
Ageism– it's been known that because of a person age, he/she been discriminated against for job
advancement. Race– refers to the practice of treating people differently because of the race. I have
personally heard on my past job that the manager is looking to hire a Caucasian person, yes this still
exists in toady time. Discrimination– will always be a around it will take a miracle for this to come
to an end not only within the workplace.
Problems
The problem with feminist theory is gender free morality may be impossible. In today era, many
people don't agree that women should have equal pay as men within the work place. Even though
laws have been passed to equal pay, however when it comes to equal pay a lot of company still don't
comply with this ruling.
Model
The feminist model is described as conflict resolution. Feminist model aims to resolve inequality on
multiple levels of existence. In addition, feminist model of conflict determination identifies sources
of conflict as results of oppression prolonged by dominant. e.g. if a male and a female walk over to
the automotive service department to get their car work on, and the worker come out and automatic
address the male with the question, "how may I help you", the worker is looking at the male as the
dominant person.

Implicit Gender Bias Essay
Implicit Gender Bias and Women in STEM Fields
Most people consider themselves as rational, reasoning individuals who make decisions after
considering the facts at hand. Research suggests that this is often not the case, with implicit bias at
work shaping one's responses. Researchers at Cornell University have defined implicit bias as
"unconscious, unintentional bias" (Royer, Hido & Slotnick, 2017). Predictors of implicit bias
include socio–economic status, gender, ethnicity, childhood experience, and cultural experience
(Cooley, Payne & Phillips, 2013). Unlike explicit bias which reflects attitudes or beliefs that one
endorses on a conscious level, implicit bias refers to attitudes or stereotypes that affect our
understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner resulting from subtle cognitive
processes that often operate at a level below conscious awareness and without intentional control
(Gyan, n.d.). Of these, implicit gender bias affects the health and social wellbeing of women, as well
as disadvantages women economically and in the workplace. As such implicit gender bias is
endemic within the scientific, technological, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and this
bias can disadvantage women pursing these careers (Moss–Racusin, Dovidio, Brescoll, Graham &
Handelsman, 2012). The importance of further study of mitigating interventions of this implicit
gender bias is clear. Our hypothesis is that implicit gender bias related to women in STEM fields

The Importance Of Gender Bias
One of the most debated topics in modern society today is equality. Most everyone agrees that all
people are equal, however, most everyone is also implicitly biased about genders whenever it comes
to careers. For example, imagine for a moment a random piano teacher. What gender did you
automatically think of them as? You more than likely initially imaged a female piano teacher. Now,
imagine a random surgeon/ doctor. What gender did you automatically see them as? You probably
imaged them as a male. If so, you are experiencing implicit gender bias. Unfortunately, you are not
alone in this; society itself implicitly assigns males to scientific careers and women to liberal arts.
Implicit bias are the completely unconscious stereotypes and attitudes we have towards society that
affects our decisions and understanding of things. The key word in that definition is unconscious.
Most people do not even realize they hold this bias; you might not have even realized you were
experiencing this bias until reading this paragraph. This ignorance is one of the main reasons this
bias is still occurring on a daily basis to most of humanity, and it is the main reason there is such a
gender divide in careers today. It is hypothesized that helping people identify their implicit bias
(specifically gender career bias) and providing them with basic education and strategies on the topic
itself will reduce their gender career bias. The rather recent development of social media has been
helpful to

Gender, Gender And Gender Bias
Language and gender has become an increasingly popular topic of study over recent decades, most
likely due to the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 70s. This can also be seen in the fact
that goals of linguistic studies shifted at this point, to not just look at grammatical differences
between males and females but to examine sexism and gender bias in language. The wording of
such studies becomes increasingly important in the modern era, as gender is now recognised as a
socially constructed concept of masculine and feminine features, based on biological sex but not
limited to that. Simone de Beauvoir (1952) believed that we gradually become more masculine or
feminine but we are not inherently gendered.
Language and gender was not developed as a serious subfield until the 1975 publication of Robin
Lakoff's Language and Woman's Place. Lakoff argued that women use particular language features
in order to deny themselves means of strong expression, which are stereotypically reserved for
males. These features include shows of uncertainty, such as hedging and indirect requests. Indirect
requests include making a statement in hope that it will elicit the desired response from someone
else without openly asking. 'Women's speech seems... to contain more instances of 'well', 'y'know'...
words that convey the sense that the speaker is uncertain about what [she] is saying' (Lakoff,
1975:53). Dale Spender (1980) talks about gender power relations, but disagrees with Lakoff as she

Gender Bias In Sports Essay
Highly accomplished female athletes are often ''infantilized'' by sport commentators by referring to
them as ''girls'' or
''young ladies'' whereas skilled male athletes are rarely (if ever) referred to as ''boys'' (Messner et al.,

2003). A recent headline in the UK's Daily Mail regarding the Sochi Olympics read, ''Curl power:
Girls sweep their way to bronze as Britain equals its best ever Winter Olympics tally'' (Daily Mail
Reporter, 2014). Not surprisingly, the male curlers were not referred to as ''boys'' when they won a
silver medal the next day.
Commentators further infantilize female athletes by calling them by their first name only whereas
this rarely occurs with male athletes. Messner et al. (1993) found that women's ... Show more

gymnastics, swimming, and track and field competitions during the 2004 Summer Olympics and
discovered that gender biased commentary occurred more often in the sports considered ''artistic''
(e.g., gymnastics, diving) with the greatest gender bias between men and women's gymnastics.
Similarly, Angilini, Billings, and MacAuthor (2013) found the greatest amount of gender biased
commentary in figure skating in their examination of the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Typically, the negative framing described in the previous paragraphs occurs alongside positive
narratives. Duncan and

present such mixed messages. As Eagleman (2013) described, ''it is coverage that appears positive at

Gender Beliefs Of Gender Bias In The Workplace

Stereotypes
Women have long fought for the right to be viewed as equal within the work place. Over the past
decades the percentage of women in management has risen from a mere 13.8% in 1950 to 50.6% in
2007 (Latu, 2000). However, gender stereotype bias and discrimination are still present in the
modern workforce. Gender stereotypes are beliefs of how men and women should be and act. When
evaluators don't have clear criteria, ambiguity causes gender stereotypes to fill the voids. Leading to
differences in the way men and women are evaluated. This happens, in most cases, on an
unconscious level, though it does still occur consciously. It has been shown by psychologists that we
routinely categorize individuals within milliseconds of meeting them, we classify them by their
gender. In doing this we assume they will possess certain gender role traits, either feminine or
masculine. Men are expected to have strong leadership traits, while women are known to have
nurturing, submissive qualities. The cause of gender discrimination is based on cultural beliefs and
organizational policies. Women are most vulnerable to gender discrimination and sexual harassment
when they are in a male dominated environment, they may also be perceived as a threat.
How gender stereotypes put women at a disadvantage.

SONA: Own–Gender Bias in Change Detection for Gender–Specific Images
The previous research was based on change blindness, such as, not able to view change when in an
environment. Changes of the environment can vary to the color, people, etc. In addition, there are
two different types of processing, such as, bottom–up and top–down. For instances, the bottom–up
process observes the physical missing in the environment. And, the top–down process observe the
beliefs, expectation etc. of the participant. Furthermore, the question for this research was that men
and women would not differ their capability to view changes in images. In addition, that men and
women would view changes sufficiently in the images if it pertain to their gender rather than the
opposite gender.
The methods used in this research were participants, materials and procedures. For instance, the
participants consist of 53 undergraduates, in detail, 31 women and 23 men. In addition, the race of
the participants were a variety of Whites, Blacks and Hispanics. Yet, the race of the participants
were not equaled, for example, there were more Whites than Blacks ... Show more content on

projected in the question for the research. Furthermore, the changes in image were the key factor in
the research. The participants were not that successful in pointing out the changes or no change on

Gender Bias And Its Effect On Education
Leedy, LaLonde, and Runk (2003) found that their data supported and built on the findings of other
researchers concerning gender stereotypes. They found that girls who were motivated and had
mathematical talent were still subject to the effects of gender bias and that they had decreased
confidence in their mathematical abilities. The research also indicated a continuing belief that math
is a male domain. Females did not acknowledge the stereotype and felt the survey was biased and
insulting and left comments saying so. No such comments were left by males. The belief by men
that math is a male domain, coupled with the failure of women to acknowledge the biases existence
sets up an unrealistic relationship. The researchers postulated that rather than denying biases exist,
we must acknowledge them so that we can move on and reform education. They felt that the reforms
need to occur outside, as well as inside, the classroom, and must include parents, especially mothers.
The attitudes of all parties involved must be changed for reform to be effective.
Riegle–Crumb and Moore (2013) found that females were underrepresented in the engineering
course they studied. Although female students made up 50% of the enrollment at the high schools,
they only comprised an average of 14% of course enrollees. Women in the classes shared similar
academic backgrounds with their male classmates, but the women were more likely to have a parent
who worked in engineering or a scientific field.

Relationship Between Gender Bias And Gender Essay
This study focuses on the relationship between gender bias, gender ideology, and gender roles in
everyday life. The study analyzes how differences in gender affect professors' behavior in the
classroom. My research question is how do men and women view professors' treatment of students
based on gender? Some basic guiding questions are: In your opinion and experience, do professors
treat certain groups of students differently? Who are these students? Specifically, do professors treat
men vs. women differently in the classroom? Why do you think professors do/don't do this? My
hypothesis was that respondents would think professors call on men in the classroom due to their
stereotypical qualities of being competitive, confident, and dominant. The overwhelming majority of
people describe women as shy, compassionate, and timid . Men are more willing to speak up and
shout out an answer in the classroom because of their confidence and dominance. Given these
stereotypical traits it would be more likely for a male to answer a question, get called on, or engage
in a conversation with the teacher rather than a women because of women's timid traits . I believe
that the majority of men are less likely to filter a response and think before they speak in class,
therefore leading them to get called on by the professor to share their opinion. From my own
experience I have seen this begin to change over the years possibly because of the increase in
women in the social and political

Gender Bias Of Face Recognition
The ability of humans to recognise and remember faces is remarkable. Interestingly, there seem to
be many factors that influence the performance of facial recognition, such as age, gender, race and
even particular social or cultural groups that people belong to.
This experiment explores whether there is gender bias in face recognition.
Own–gender bias in facial recognition is the tendency to recognise individuals from one's own
gender better than individuals from the other gender (Herlitz & Lovén, 2013).
Categorisation–Individuation model: (Herlitz & Lovén, 2013)
Categorisation: classification of face according to shared group features
Individuation: classification of faces according to individual features
Individuation is more effective with faces you are most familiar with. Our perceptual expertise
comes from early childhood caregivers, friendship groups, cultural representations etc. (Herlitz &
Lovén, 2013)
Categorisation is more effective when faces belong to a group you identify with. Out–group faces
are processed categorically, whilst in–group faces are processed individually. In–groups can include
gender, age, ethnicity, membership or organisations etc. (Wolff, Kemter, Schweinberger & Wiese,
2014)
Review relevant literature: theories & past research,
In the past, there has been evidence for bias in facial recognition for people that are similar to us in a
certain way, whether it be race, age, or some other characteristic. For example, there is own–race
bias,

The One Child Policy And Gender Bias
Everyday, people talk about major global issues, such as the economy, access to better health care,
and education. However, one major issue that still needs to be addressed in particular is access to
education for women in various countries. Women's access to education is more limited in China in
comparison to the access to education in the United States, due to the one–child policy and gender
bias. Women's access to education in China is much more limited than it is to women in the United
States and one main reason for this is something called the one–child policy. The one–child policy
basically states that families in China are only allowed to have one child. Before the one child policy
existed, parents had families with more than one child; this often led to parents favoring the male
child (Lee, 2012, p. 41). When parents favor their male child, this is referred to as "son preference"
and son preference is something that has continued in China among most parents for centuries (Lee,
2012, p. 41). Male children, therefore, are preferred and more privileged, leaving little or no
opportunity for the female children to progress educationally. "This gender bias has resulted in
significant gender inequalities in many respects, such as the large gap in the literacy rate or in
educational attainment between the genders" (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Both the gender bias and son
preference have led to the wide literacy gap as a consequence and this is something that needs to
change. If a

Gender Roles, Stereotyping and Gender Bias Essay
Gender affects every aspect of our life, from how we feel about ourselves and set our goals in
educational, recreational and work opportunities as well as the the nature and extent of our
participation in social and civic life. It has a strong impact on the way we practice our religion, the
way we dress, the way we express our feelings and the nature of all of our relationships with others.
This paper explores various facets of gender roles in order to understand this topic such as what role
males and females are expected to play in today's society, how gender roles are decided, affected
and exaggerated by stereotyping. Futhermore, this paper will draw attention towards how
stereotyping leads to gender biases.

An individual can either identify themselves with a subculture or social group which results in them
having diverse gender roles.
Today when a human baby is born the first question that is asked is '' Is it a boy or a girl?'' In human
culture the answer to this question is gigantically significant. This definition of ''femaleness'' or
''maleness'' is the hypothesis of the society which assumes that the child who is born a girl will
remain female forever, while a boy will be a male. Gender roles are created by society and vary
from society to society as it takes all sorts to make a world. It does not matter where ever you are in
the world its just ''society'' which assigns the gender roles without even having enough knowledge
about one's gender identity. We living in 21st century but when it comes to gender role orientation
we are in total chaos. Gender identity :
Most non– Western societies have three human genders man ,woman and third gender. In the West,
gender is consider to be the same as one's sex identity and there are only two valid options male or

Gender Bias In To Kill A Mockingbird
The Human Class
Throughout all of history and still to this day, gender bias and discrimination remains a huge issue in
our world. Harper Lee chooses to address gender bias in her powerful and provoking novel called To
Kill a Mockingbird. Gender bias occurs far too often, and Lee clearly holds a true understanding of
the powerful impact it makes on our society as a whole. All through the novel, any reader could easy
see the negative impact that gender bias can do to a community, society and even nation. Gender
bias most efficiently is portrayed by how Jem and Aunt Alexandra relates to Scout, by the fact that
women could not usually work jobs and last of all, the way that Mayella is portrayed and understood
in court.
Gender bias in Maycomb occurs in Scout's own home between her and her own family members.
Jem and Scout would often times fight, like normal siblings, but it was clear that at times, Jem took
it too far by speaking words of hurtful bias towards Scout's gender. After Jem hurts her, Scout
doubts the power and beauty of being a female by stating, "I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was
being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so, and if I started
behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with" (54). Not only does conflict arise
between Scout and her brother in regard to gender bias, but it also occurs between Scout and her
Aunt Alexandra. Time and time again, Aunt Alexandra scolds Scout for

Gender Bias Within The Workplace
Gender bias is a concept that is seen every day, where society has taken upon itself to place male
and females in certain stereotypical categories. For instance, gender bias in the workforce is one of
the most common areas where women and men are treated differently. Women are "supposed to"
work in fields such as nursing, office work, and so on; while men work in the fields of construction,
engineering, athletics, etc.. In addition, there is a clear difference in the pay amount and promotions
that men and women receive. What's the situation and where does it need changing? What laws have
been passed?
Before anything, some may ask, what gender bias is well, gender bias can be defined as the
discrimination of one gender, giving the other gender more favoritism. Gender bias can also refer to
the unequal treatment of certain individuals, whether female or male. This treatment can be clearly
seen in the workplace standpoint.
Gender bias in the workforce has been present for centuries. It is a persistent problem that, despite
the progress that has already has been made, there is still much to be done before it can disappear. A
Gender stereotypic viewpoint in the workforce has been passed down from generations to
generations, and these sorts of ideas are hard to get rid of.
For years men and women have followed a certain stereotype, with the woman being a simple
housewife, staying with the children and sharing an unbreakable maternal bond with them. As

Gender Bias : Denial Of Clergy Rights
Chapter 9
Gender Bias. Denial of clergy rights
"I have been a practicing Christian all my life and a deacon and Bible teacher for many years.... So
my decision to sever my ties with the Southern Baptist Convention, after six decades, was painful
and difficult. It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the Convention's leaders, quoting a few
carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was
responsible for original sin, ordained that women, must be "subservient" to their husbands and
prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors, or chaplains in the military service" – (Jimmy Carter,
2009).
In A. L. Cook's 2010 study,36 The Denied Calling: A Look at the Role of Women in the Southern
Baptist Church (SBC), she discusses the uneven history of the church in regard to its female
members. In earlier years of the SBC, women were ordained to preach and ordained as deacons.
Beginning in 1984, this act was rescinded with the caveat that women leaders ordained earlier than
1984 can retain their ordination. This has resulted in women leaders leaving the church.36 After
the1984 resolution, opposition began to build both within and outside the Southern Baptist
Convention. Scriptures opposing the views presented by the Convention were cited, and women's
organizations began to research the issue.36 The SBC claims that I Tim 2: 11–15 is their authority to
deny female leadership in the Convention. The SBC also passed a resolution

Gender Bias In Nursing
What comes to your mind when you think of a nurse? Usually the image of a women in scrubs with
a stethoscope around her neck is what comes to mind. Although we may not do this on purpose, it is
quite normal for us to see only women unfortunately. When attending hospitals or clinics, I am often
assisted by a female nurse and usually a male physician. Gender bias has largely been present within
the medical field, especially when discussing nurses, physicians, or simply even medical school
students.
This article reached out to me as very interesting and pointed out some factors that I did not realize
prior to reading the article. Discrimination based on your gender should be nothing held against us
in the eyes of the medical field. Looking back into time, the association of women in nursing began
in the mid–1800's. Many of our elders have been raised associating nursing as a feminine
occupation, and they have passed this belief onto their offspring. This belief has been passed down
through several generations, but as time is passing, gender roles are becoming less common, and we
need to translate this into nursing. When talking about gender equality, most of the time we think of
women fighting for the opportunities that are provided to men. This situation is almost completely
reversed. Men are now the minority fighting to have the same opportunities as women in the nursing
field. We need to stop thinking of nursing as a feminine occupation, but as an occupation for all

Gender bias is unequal treatment in employment opportunity, such as promotion, pay, benefits, or
privileges due to attitudes based on sex of an employee or group of employees. Gender bias can be a
legitimate basis for a lawsuit under anti–discrimination statutes. Workplace gender bias not only
attempts, but succeeds in several ways that people don't recognize for woman in male professions.
Men automatically have an advantage over women when it comes to getting a certain job because
several people view men as being more powerful, influential, and dominant than women in
workplaces. Stereotypes have been embedded in our brains, and we tend to go along with them
without even being aware of what we are doing. There's hope that citizens mindset can be changed if

Gender Bias – Mountains On The Playing Field "97% of everything you know about yourself and

NBC news anchor Carol Jenkins. This is an indirect example of sexism in our society. Sexism has
changed since the 20th century. We've gone from women strictly being classified as housewives to
women being discriminated against in leadership positions. Much of the discrimination that women
face is closely related to issues surrounding body image. What we cannot forget in the year 2014 is

Employers and society believe the media so the men get the job. This is not just true in positions of
entertainment but in politics as well. In state government there have been 2,319 men as governors as
compared to 35 women ("Miss Representation"). Women feel as if they don't have the criteria to run
for governor. The media uses this against women. In American politics only 20% of the people that
serve in Congress are women and women make up 51% of the U.S. population ("Miss
Representation"). The media is to blame for this. The 20% of females in Congress have to be more
educated than the males in Congress (Galer). John Boehner has been on the cover of 4 national
weekly magazines compared to Nancy Pelosi who was speaker of the house for 4 years and has been
on zero national magazines ("Miss Representation").The US is not one of the 71 countries on Earth
that has had a female president but China is one (Aliprandini). If the American people knew China

Gender Bias In The Elizabethan Era In England
The issue of gender bias has been in play in every society since the creation of man. After mankind
had sinned, eating the fruit, God punished man, woman and serpent. To the woman, He said "Your
desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you." (Genesis 3:16b). In each
society, however, men and women played different roles. Although I don't necessarily disagree with
the gender bias that exists and has existed, I am still shocked at how differently people of different
genders lived differently in the past. My opinion is that people are making gender bias in the world
today much worse than it seems. This can be seen history, biblical events and personal experience.
In the Elizabethan Era in England, there was a great difference between the treatment of men and
women. Elizabethan women were to be subservient to men and relied on a male relative to support
them. After a marriage, the women were expected to run households and take care of children. On
the other hand, men dealt their jobs and were allowed to go around and have fun. Women in this era
were, although treated with respect, still somewhat looked down on and it was very difficult for a
woman without a male relative to live well. This is very different from today's society, as there are
many independent women living around the world. I am quite shocked at the way the Elizabethan
women had practically no say in things, as in many cultures, and that they had no choice over their
marriage. Everything

Is Gender Bias For College Aid?
Original Thoughts
We started our research expecting to find that there was gender bias in college aid.
For example we thought that men would get more sports scholarships than women and women
would get more STEM scholarships than men
This, we thought, was because the colleges were trying to draw in genders to certain fields.
We thought that males would get more scholarships because colleges want more male athletes and
that women would get more STEM scholarships because they want to draw more women into the
STEM fields.
Gender Bias?
Contrary to our original ideas, our research showed us there was not a bias in the areas we thought.
In fact, our research revealed to us that there was not actually any true gender bias in financial aid
and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

STEM Scholarship Programs
Another one of the main areas we expected to find gender biases was the STEM Scholarship
programs.
The STEM program is a very successful program which was designed to provide resources and
opportunities to underrepresented groups.
In order to research this, we looked into a specific scholarship program geared toward the STEM
program at Wright State University.
The Wright Science Technology and Engineering Preparatory Program is an academic pre–
engineering program at Wright State University.
This program provides resources and financial incentives to encourage students to pursue degrees in
the STEM field.
Wright STEPP Students By Gender
This graph shows the distribution of students involved in the program based on gender.
As you can see, the undergraduates that are part of the program are dominantly females, while the
graduate students are much more balanced, but there are slightly more males.
STEM Scholarship Programs
We recently interviewed Barb Gunnison who works as the Special Programs Coordinator in the
Learning Resource Center here at Behrend.
She was a big part of the STEM Scholarship Program that we used to have here.
The program started because they wanted to "give a home to minorities in STEM fields".

Gender Bias In The Early Greek Culture
Gender Bias in the Early Greek Culture
It's important to know that discrimination is the unjust treatment of a person or thing based on age,
race, and or sexual orientation (CITE THIS). Discrimination is seen throughout the world's history
in forms of slavery, social inequality, racial bias, and gender inequality. Unfortunately, women in
history also faced discrimination by not having much of the same rights as men did. More
specifically, when looking at the history of the Greeks, one can clearly point out gender inequality in
everyday life, law, and even literature.
Athenian women were the subjects of bias in day–to–day life. A women's property was controlled
by her father until she entered an arranged marriage, usually at the age of fourteen. Her husband
would then "supervise" her and that was because it was "believed that a woman could not act
independently"( PAGE NUMBER). If they left the house or attended court they were accompanied
by a male. They didn't receive formal educations and couldn't act in plays. Women essentially
couldn't do anything. Women were seen as inferior to men and therefore were treated like such. This
idea bled into the belief that women should do things at home while the man goes off to work. Men
were taking advantage of women by stripping them from any potential power by controlling every
aspect of their lives. Although it may seem odd that women did not fight for their rights, many of
them feared the consequences for not obeying her husband,

Gender Bias in Education
Gender bias has existed in education since the inception of schooling. According to the National
Women's History Museum (NWHM), during the 1700's, women were denied access to secondary
schooling, and were only given the most basic education deemed necessary to fulfill the "women's
duties" (NWHM 1). Research from the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education
(NCWGE) has shown that when Title IX was introduced in 1972, girls were able to participate in
any state–funded activity, resulting in protest from those who believed gender bias did not exist
(NCWGE 1). The opposition argued that girls are just different from boys, and incapable of doing
the same things. The gender bias in schools across America, since the conception of schooling, has
led to hardships and stereotypes faced by females in education and society. During the 1700's, the
education of women was basic. Some girls were taught how to read, strictly to read the Bible, and
they were taught skills considered useful, like knitting, sewing, and other household duties. It was
considered strange and undesirable for a woman to be well educated. As the 1800's began, female
academies began to be formed, which provided women with a similar education to men, teaching
math, writing, reading, and history, but separate of the opposite gender. Heading into the 1900's,
African American women were finally Higgins 2 given a proper education, although separate of
whites (NWHM 3). With the creation of Title IX in

Gender Bias Of Becoming A Leader

  • 1. Gender Bias Of Becoming A Leader Key issues research brief set out to address are the gender bias in becoming a leader. Several key findings are that man over emerge as leaders in over emerge as leaders in self managing teams while women emerge as leaders once engaged in more agentic behaviors. One interesting finding revealed that gender roles did not matter when individuals engaged in social behaviors in fact man and women under–emerged as leaders, because social behaviors were not considerate as leadership traits by the groups. The article addresses the gender role inequality in pursuing leadership positions, trough out our class time on several occasions we touch upon gender inequality, gender related traits and how to influence some behaviors to promote gender equality (negotiations topic, communications, etc.) Most importantly I would like to discuss the current gender inequality situation in the world. We all know the good old saying "if you do not include women in your daily activity 50% of your populations intellectual wealth is eliminated". Although this is a common understanding amongst all in modern society yet it lacks the practical application. There are ample research articles that outline the wage and leadership inequality amongst genders but there are no concrete articles or suggestions how eliminate gender bias. The research findings reveal general idea of what can be done to solve the leadership gender inequality by suggesting activities for women to engage that would positively ... • 3. Gender Bias In The United States Throughout the history of the United States, gender bias has been and still is an immense concern. Women have been at the forefront of such prejudice. For several centuries, women have battled for equity in their everyday lives, academically, and professionally. The push for justice has been a slow process, with incremental gains. Initially, educational experiences for women were limited to a curriculum that would support and/or reinforce the ideas that women were less superior to males. Women were identified as the homemakers and their essential duties only entailed domestic skills. There were several ideas that contributed to the connotation of gender bias of women. Notions such as educated women were dangerous to society, their mental and physical well–being were at risk if subjected ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The differences in the interaction between teachers and their male and female students are vastly different. Teachers have a tendency to be ignorant of their contribution to the continual trouble of obtaining gender equity. A teacher should be studying their students, just as must as a student is required to learn from teachers lessons. Constant awareness of classroom interactions is fundamental to develop and model equity that is beneficial to supporting each student's ability to be successful. In more recent years, our educational system has faced challenges that are leading our country back into segregation. Single–sex education has resurfaced; jeopardizing the gains our ancestors fought so hard for. A few people believe that the biological make–up between genders is significantly different, that having coeducational classes is doing more harm than good. Conversely, there is no proven study that supports these claims; however studies have displayed the exact opposite. Separating genders within the educational system will only perpetuate and magnify ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Gender Bias is being taught and occurs unintentionally in our schools. Teachers challenge boys more than girls. Sexism is so elusive, it is being taught every day and educators are not even aware they are doing it. 2. Does the author come across as knowledgeable? fair? Does the speaker's reputation convey a certain authority? Author(s) have many case studies, two decades of research, grants for programs, hours of classroom observation and statistical information as evidence. There seemed to be some bias towards the male gender, there was not enough information disclosed about the demographics of the schools or the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 9. The structure of the article would be Cause and Effect, the article points out serious issues and blames gender bias. The writer explains how being gender bias affects girls, especially in education. The writer could have went more into the cause and effect gender bias has on boys. Teachers might have reason to specifically pay more attention to boys, maybe to keep them engaged. The teacher might know the girls are fine when she turns her back. The rotten boy in the back might whip a spitball at her if she turns her back on the boys, and she knows it. (This was only added for humor) A teacher with gender bias might unintentionally effect how a class participates, if girls are never called during a discussion, they will probably quit raising their hands. 10. • 7. Gender Bias On The Classroom Gender Bias In The Classroom Gender roles are widely accepted societal expectations about how males and females should behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). Gender roles create a difference in the way that masculine and feminine behaviors are accepted among society. Gender roles are often depicted as just a part of who a person is and help better define the difference between male and female. When society begins to use these gender roles as norms we often see those who don't fit into the correct role become ostracized by society. When these gender roles become rigid they can become gender stereotypes. These stereotypes are fixed and oversimplified beliefs about the way in which men and women ought to behave (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). One of the most common gender stereotypes is that men are the breadwinners and women are the homemakers. These stereotypes also carry into emotions as well, women being more likely to feel sadness, fear and sympathy, while men are more likely to feel anger and pride. Another area where gender stereotypes can be observed is in the work place with women taking jobs such as nursing and teaching, and men holding jobs in fields like medicine and law. (Rathus, 2010, pg. 447). There are many physical, cognitive, personality, and behavioral differences between genders. Physically men and women have different primary and secondary sex characteristics. The primary sex characteristics are the organs of the reproductive system where women have ovaries and men ... • 9. Gender Bias In Sports Media Sport media is no different from any other profession. There is gender bias in this field. Due to sexism, it makes it hard for women to even enter into the career path they desire most. There are many factors when it comes to gender bias, especially in sport media. Women are at a disadvantage in the field of sport media. Before 1978, female reporters were not allowed to interview players in the locker room before and after games (Clapp). It was not until 1978, when a female reporter decided enough was enough. In 1978, Sports Illustrated reporter Melissa Ludtke sued the New York Yankees for banning her from entering the locker room to interview players during the 1977 World Series (Clapp). This case went to federal court and the judge decided that banning female reporters violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution (Clapp). The Equal Protection Clause demands that the states "must treat an individual in the same manner as others in similar conditions and circumstances" (LII Staff). Since women reporters were not allowed in locker rooms and men were, then this was a direct violation because women and male reporters were in the locker rooms for the same reasons. In the business of sport and as a sport manager, women being treated unfairly in sport media is something that needs to be addressed by fining and suspending those coaches, players and anybody involved with a sport organization who make sexist remarks toward women ... • 11. Gender Pay Bias The Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed gender discrimination (Macionis, 2012). That is, employers cannot discriminate when setting pay for men and women (Macionis, 2012). Although these laws exist in the United States, median wages for women amounts to seventy–nine percent of median wages for men (Hirschfeld Davis, 2016). As a result, President Barack Obama signed an executive law that will close gender pay gap with mandatory reporting and penalize companies that engage in discriminatory pay practices (Hirschfeld Davis, 2016). According to Macionis (2012), gender biases affects how women are promoted in the workplace. This is a form of glass ceiling, which is the "subtle discrimination that effectively blocks ... • 13. Gender Bias In The Women's Rights Movement In this society, men have more privileges than women in the workplace. It is true the world we live in today has many opportunities for women. Women can vote, have their own property, have jobs like men, etc. However, there is not much equality between men and women working. Women are often worse paid than men with few rights, which is one of many examples of gender bias. Gender bias is the unequal treatment between men and women in the employment area, based on their gender expectations. It turns out gender bias exists especially in the workplace. According to TechRepublic, unequal pay, diminished responsibilities, and positional bias are emphasized for women working.1 These examples of gender bias go back all the way to before when women's rights were fought for. Women then had a basic education, they were generally married off by their parents, they had to take care of their children and the house, which their husbands owned, and they were not acknowledged of their hard work. That all began to change when the 1848 Seneca Falls Women's Rights Convention triggered the beginning of the Women's Rights Movement in the United States. Individualists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony have been devoted to the fight for women's rights.2 Changing the unjust and unequal society was their purpose. Through petitions, meetings, and public speaking, they were able to achieve their purpose. Margaret Mead, an anthropologist said, "Never doubt that a small group of ... • 15. Gender Bias In The Workplace Essay In today's society, we are faced with many challenges in the workforce. It can be as simple as the initial trial of finding a job, or getting along with our coworkers. Not many individuals are jumping at the opportunity to complain about work, since our economy is continuously going through up's and down's as is. Once we finish our education and are out in the "real world", our expectations conclude that people have reached maturity, and that stereotyping and discrimination cease to exist. But it is from my own personal experience that I have found this is in fact, not the case, and that harassment in the workplace is a very real issue. Primarily, I am researching the way media portrays gender–biases in the workplace, and why they are relevant. Additionally, I am looking at which occupations might lead to higher levels of emotional stress related to gender inequality for women, and to what historical events or patterns may have manifested these inequalities. My goal is to provide specific examples of sexism towards women in the workplace, and I will be demonstrating how feminist theorists discuss the topic of inequality at work. Starting out in the working world is always a nerve–wracking point in one's life. Once hired, you have certain expectations to uphold, expectations on deadlines, work performance, and interpersonal performance. By dealing with the additional burden of harassment in the workforce, one is bound to have a harder time satisfying these expectations. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Gender Bias And Gender Inequality The average american female only makes ⅔ of what the average male does. Whether it is in school, or the workforce, gender inequality still exists and is a major problem. There is still a huge difference in the way women get treated compared to the way men get treated. Due to the invisible barrier that is holding back the success of women, social realities need to be redefined in order for gender inequality to longer exist. Gender inequality refers to the unequal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men and girls and boys. There are three main ideas that contribute to it, but there are still many others that do too. One of them is sexism, which refers to the range of attitudes, beliefs, policies, laws, and behaviors that discriminate on the basis of gender. A second idea that also contributes is gender roles. Gender roles are rights, responsibilities, expectations, and relationships of men and women in a society. The third idea is gender bias, which is the favoritism toward one gender or the other. All three have a direct correlation with each other. Gender inequality is most common at school and in the workforce. A lot of people seems to think men hold a higher rank in life than women do just because they think women cannot do the same things a man can do. Just because the the anatomy of a woman and a man are different, doesn't mean one or the other should get better treatment, but that is still a reality women face today. Men have access to many more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. India And The Gender Bias Gender Economics Weekly Report 1 Prof. Rupa Korde Name: Ronak Shah LE2012761090 FSLE3 Question: – The problem which are being faced in India and the gender bias in the "healthcare sector" of India India is a developing country and we all know that India is still in a health crisis. Although, India has been awarded a 'Polio–free' status by an official certificate by the World Health Organization (WHO), we still occupy 2nd position when it comes to population and the 112th position in sex ratio out of 190 countries . With this data we can assess the condition of healthcare in India. The healthcare system is very bad in our country and for a developing country like India, we require that everyone, at least the work force and the children who are the future of our country should be healthy, because if we want India to reach at a stage of a developed country then we need to make sure we have an overall development. One of my findings was a survey conducted by Dr.C.Chandramouli who is the Registrar general and the census commissioner of India. His survey was conducted in different states of India but the information I have taken is from the state, Madhya Pradesh the heart of India. The information was gathered from each and every district in Madhya Pradesh in form of questioners and in form of the verbal information which had to be gathered because there are still some villages in India who still don't know how to read or write. When asked if DV affects a significant number, small number of men or doesn't affect men, 53.2% male respondents and 58.6% female respondents think that it affects a small number of men. Only 23.8% male respondents and 31.3% female respondents think a significant number of men are affected and a further 10.9% male respondents and 10.1% female respondents think it doesn't affect men. Since the p value show no statistical relationship, there is no difference between how men and women think and there is a clear indication that most people think that domestic violence for men is not a distressful issue for its not a considerable number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although men and women show different views, the Cramer's V of 0.154 shows only a weak association. A bigger sample size could've produced different or more reliable results. Gender bias is the distortion of views and preferences based on the sex of a person. Biases are preformed based on what kind of surroundings a person grows up in and their personal experiences. This bias exists in everyone's mind and subconsciously make people act and react in different ways based on stereotypes rather than reality (Rhonda. E, Dugan, 2008). Everyone has different views on male masculinity. Even in this day and age where there are equal rights for both sexes there is a patriarchal view about men in society, where they are classed as the stronger sex which has led to the belief that male to female aggression is more serious than female to male aggrrssion (Drijber et al, 2013). Sexual assaults and DV are disproportionately considered as women centric problems. Surveys conducted reports victims in rape cases are 90% women, one in four women are a victim of intimate partner violence and 44% lesbian women and 61% bisexual women have been subjected to physical abuse by a partner or sexual abuse. • 23. Examples Of Gender Bias In Julius Caesar In sexism, gender bias has existed throughout history and still exists today. Gender bias is frequently called sexism or gender discrimination. "A study by four researchers, Kelly Jones, Cay Evans, Ronald Byrd, and Kathleen Campbell, analyzed videotapes of teachers while they taught the students in the classroom, then they had the teachers watch themselves on the video while pointing out the gender–biased attitudes, languages and behavior; most teachers were surprised to see how they gave their attention on one gender over the other and the unintentional gender bias happening in the classroom" (A World of Gender Bias, 2015). Researchers recommended methods for the teachers to use when having to do an activity to decrease the stereotypical behavior ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sexism puts a barrier on what society views as acceptable for a man and woman to do. It also may be true that men and women are not necessarily equal physically. Men are scientifically proven are stronger than women physically in terms of muscles and athletic ability. "Men are physically stronger than women, who have, on the average, less total muscle mass, to the total body mass and men also have denser, stronger bones, tendons and ligaments" (Burton, 2012). Men tend to be larger than women in size which makes them tend to carry out more muscles and more muscles normally points toward having more strength than women. But on the other hand, people should approach fairness and not equality because sexism has negative impacts on the people which causes them to commit suicide. In Antigone, Antigone was a strong, courageous and an independent person and there was no definite evidence that Antigone was strong and brave person but based on what the readers gather from the play Antigone seems psychologically capable of the things that she did more than the other characters. "The leading cause of death of women ages 15 to 19 worldwide is suicide and the most expected reason is sexism and gender discrimination" (Valenti, 2015). Gender Bias For Dress Code "Nineteen percent of the 7,800 students surveyed in middle and high schools across the country said they were prevented from wearing clothing deemed "inappropriate" based on their gender..."–– CNN Student protests growing over gender–equal dress codes I think that dress code at school is gender bias because it's female specific, your socioeconomic status will help determine if you get dress coded or not, boys don't usually get dress coded like girls do, and girls have a harder time dressing age appropriate. Females are often targeted for dress code because the dress code lists more restrictions and allocations for females instead of males. "Dress code violations include baring shoulders, wearing a tank top, or exposing a bra strap." Schools can be petty when getting on to girls for dress code issues. Neatoday.com says, A female Kentucky student was sent home for showing her collarbone... her Mom brought a scarf to put around her neck and they still deemed it inappropriate. I personally do not think showing your collarbone is worth getting in trouble for in school. "A Texas honor student gets sent home for wearing yoga pants and an oversize tee shirt." I honestly do not see how yoga pants and an oversized tee shirt would be seen as a distraction. Kids come to school to learn not to be in trouble because of what they wear. • 29. Gender Bias Essay Gender bias, also known as sexism, is a full of attitudes, laws, taboos, preferences, and behaviors that differentiates and discriminates against either sex. These may be a position of which male dominance and female subjugation in the modern society. It could also be a form of sexual stereotypes between men and women, these are commonly experienced in employment versus other positions. A final place that discrimination is faced is the academic environment, the female to male ratios are not in sync in certain programs and courses because of this and it is pressuring men and women to not go into certain fields and do what they love and please. Most advertisements on Television, magazines, newspapers, online ad's, use a charged sexually image with a female as the star. Women are to be a pleasure for men, and nothing else. Many people have different opinions on genders and sexuality and that is okay, but sometimes you just need to keep them to yourselves. I was walking through Walmart with a friend the other night, and we turned the corner to go down an aisle and they were walking towards us. As we approached them, they moved out of the way, so we could get through. There were 5 male specimens, around the ages of 20–24, two white, one Hispanic, and two black guys. Most of them were very tall, both white guys were thin and lean, the Hispanic guy was short and lean, and the two black guys were tall and thick. All five of the guys dress in upper class clothes such as Nike, Adidas, Under armor. As I observed these guys, they were in a group of friends. They were walking according to race, two white guys in the front, and then the Hispanic guy was in the middle, and following him was the two black guys. They were very respectful when we turned the corner and let us go through, as we passed them they went back into their formation. Two white guys in the front, and then the Hispanic in the middle, and the two black guys in the back. I also observed that they were having separate conversations among themselves. As it appeared to me, it looked like they were just socializing and spending time together, and goofing around. • 31. Gender Bias In The Workplace Sexism– women still face gender bias in the workplace. The stereotype e.g. women more likely to take a housekeeping job, secretarial tasks or even be look at taking notes at a college meeting. Ageism– it's been known that because of a person age, he/she been discriminated against for job advancement. Race– refers to the practice of treating people differently because of the race. I have personally heard on my past job that the manager is looking to hire a Caucasian person, yes this still exists in toady time. Discrimination– will always be a around it will take a miracle for this to come to an end not only within the workplace. Problems The problem with feminist theory is gender free morality may be impossible. In today era, many people don't agree that women should have equal pay as men within the work place. Even though laws have been passed to equal pay, however when it comes to equal pay a lot of company still don't comply with this ruling. Model The feminist model is described as conflict resolution. Feminist model aims to resolve inequality on multiple levels of existence. In addition, feminist model of conflict determination identifies sources of conflict as results of oppression prolonged by dominant. e.g. if a male and a female walk over to the automotive service department to get their car work on, and the worker come out and automatic address the male with the question, "how may I help you", the worker is looking at the male as the dominant person. ... • 33. Implicit Gender Bias Essay Implicit Gender Bias and Women in STEM Fields Most people consider themselves as rational, reasoning individuals who make decisions after considering the facts at hand. Research suggests that this is often not the case, with implicit bias at work shaping one's responses. Researchers at Cornell University have defined implicit bias as "unconscious, unintentional bias" (Royer, Hido & Slotnick, 2017). Predictors of implicit bias include socio–economic status, gender, ethnicity, childhood experience, and cultural experience (Cooley, Payne & Phillips, 2013). Unlike explicit bias which reflects attitudes or beliefs that one endorses on a conscious level, implicit bias refers to attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions and decisions in an unconscious manner resulting from subtle cognitive processes that often operate at a level below conscious awareness and without intentional control (Gyan, n.d.). Of these, implicit gender bias affects the health and social wellbeing of women, as well as disadvantages women economically and in the workplace. As such implicit gender bias is endemic within the scientific, technological, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, and this bias can disadvantage women pursing these careers (Moss–Racusin, Dovidio, Brescoll, Graham & Handelsman, 2012). The importance of further study of mitigating interventions of this implicit gender bias is clear. Our hypothesis is that implicit gender bias related to women in STEM fields will ... • 35. The Importance Of Gender Bias One of the most debated topics in modern society today is equality. Most everyone agrees that all people are equal, however, most everyone is also implicitly biased about genders whenever it comes to careers. For example, imagine for a moment a random piano teacher. What gender did you automatically think of them as? You more than likely initially imaged a female piano teacher. Now, imagine a random surgeon/ doctor. What gender did you automatically see them as? You probably imaged them as a male. If so, you are experiencing implicit gender bias. Unfortunately, you are not alone in this; society itself implicitly assigns males to scientific careers and women to liberal arts. Implicit bias are the completely unconscious stereotypes and attitudes we have towards society that affects our decisions and understanding of things. The key word in that definition is unconscious. Most people do not even realize they hold this bias; you might not have even realized you were experiencing this bias until reading this paragraph. This ignorance is one of the main reasons this bias is still occurring on a daily basis to most of humanity, and it is the main reason there is such a gender divide in careers today. It is hypothesized that helping people identify their implicit bias (specifically gender career bias) and providing them with basic education and strategies on the topic itself will reduce their gender career bias. The rather recent development of social media has been helpful to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Gender Bias In The Workplace Essay While the nation today is plagued with many a social injustice, one that continues to boggle my mind is that misogyny and the objectification of women is somehow still present. Barely 60 years ago (yes, your own grandmother probably was a victim of this overt sexism), gender bias was a completely acceptable, and often encouraged office practice. While this sort of sexism is not as prevalent in today's work environment, it is important to remember that young men at work in the 1960's who experienced and practiced this overt gender bias are the men who grew up to found and run companies that many young people work at today. It is completely ignorant to even say that these sorts of biases are extinct, as they died out due to fear of lawsuits ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I walked out of my first day of work with a huge smile on my face and told my mom I felt like I had just made new friends. The next day, my manager sat me down and gave me the official 'talk' dictating my responsibilities as the 'team coordinator'. The list included, but was not limited to, making sure I wore makeup to work every day, making sure my hair looked 'neat' every day (i.e. no ponytails, buns, or as my manager said, 'rat nests'), wearing what the company calls 'active wear' only in the shades white, black, and red (this ensemble consisted of leggings, a white or black tee shirt, the company issued vest in either red or black, and preferably brand name tennis shoes with socks). The final portion of my 'talk' with the manager is one that I did not realize at the time was so astounding: I was encouraged to make polite and, if applicable, flirtatious conversation with clients. I worked at the company for over six months with no significant issues until one fateful Tuesday evening. It was an hour to closing time and I was already tired and ready to go home. • 39. Gender, Gender And Gender Bias Language and gender has become an increasingly popular topic of study over recent decades, most likely due to the second wave of feminism in the 1960s and 70s. This can also be seen in the fact that goals of linguistic studies shifted at this point, to not just look at grammatical differences between males and females but to examine sexism and gender bias in language. The wording of such studies becomes increasingly important in the modern era, as gender is now recognised as a socially constructed concept of masculine and feminine features, based on biological sex but not limited to that. Simone de Beauvoir (1952) believed that we gradually become more masculine or feminine but we are not inherently gendered. Language and gender was not developed as a serious subfield until the 1975 publication of Robin Lakoff's Language and Woman's Place. Lakoff argued that women use particular language features in order to deny themselves means of strong expression, which are stereotypically reserved for males. These features include shows of uncertainty, such as hedging and indirect requests. Indirect requests include making a statement in hope that it will elicit the desired response from someone else without openly asking. 'Women's speech seems... to contain more instances of 'well', 'y'know'... words that convey the sense that the speaker is uncertain about what [she] is saying' (Lakoff, 1975:53). • 41. Gender Bias In Sports Essay Highly accomplished female athletes are often ''infantilized'' by sport commentators by referring to them as ''girls'' or ''young ladies'' whereas skilled male athletes are rarely (if ever) referred to as ''boys'' (Messner et al., 1993; Wensing & Bruce, 2003). A recent headline in the UK's Daily Mail regarding the Sochi Olympics read, ''Curl power: Girls sweep their way to bronze as Britain equals its best ever Winter Olympics tally'' (Daily Mail Reporter, 2014). Not surprisingly, the male curlers were not referred to as ''boys'' when they won a silver medal the next day. Commentators further infantilize female athletes by calling them by their first name only whereas this rarely occurs with male athletes. Messner et al. (1993) found that women's ... Similarly, Angilini, Billings, and MacAuthor (2013) found the greatest amount of gender biased commentary in figure skating in their examination of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Typically, the negative framing described in the previous paragraphs occurs alongside positive narratives. Duncan and Hasbrook (1988) used the term ambivalence to describe media accounts about female athletes that present such mixed messages. As Eagleman (2013) described, ''it is coverage that appears positive at first glance, but actually includes words, phrases, or themes that subtly belittle women'' (p. 4). • 43. Gender Beliefs Of Gender Bias In The Workplace Gender Bias in the Workplace Brittney A. Bray College of Central Florida Stereotypes Women have long fought for the right to be viewed as equal within the work place. Over the past decades the percentage of women in management has risen from a mere 13.8% in 1950 to 50.6% in 2007 (Latu, 2000). However, gender stereotype bias and discrimination are still present in the modern workforce. Gender stereotypes are beliefs of how men and women should be and act. When evaluators don't have clear criteria, ambiguity causes gender stereotypes to fill the voids. Leading to differences in the way men and women are evaluated. This happens, in most cases, on an unconscious level, though it does still occur consciously. It has been shown by psychologists that we routinely categorize individuals within milliseconds of meeting them, we classify them by their gender. In doing this we assume they will possess certain gender role traits, either feminine or masculine. Men are expected to have strong leadership traits, while women are known to have nurturing, submissive qualities. The cause of gender discrimination is based on cultural beliefs and organizational policies. Women are most vulnerable to gender discrimination and sexual harassment when they are in a male dominated environment, they may also be perceived as a threat. How gender stereotypes put women at a disadvantage. When woman don't conform to their gender roles they are often criticized. For example; when Hilary Clinton was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 47. Gender Bias And Its Effect On Education Leedy, LaLonde, and Runk (2003) found that their data supported and built on the findings of other researchers concerning gender stereotypes. They found that girls who were motivated and had mathematical talent were still subject to the effects of gender bias and that they had decreased confidence in their mathematical abilities. The research also indicated a continuing belief that math is a male domain. Females did not acknowledge the stereotype and felt the survey was biased and insulting and left comments saying so. No such comments were left by males. The belief by men that math is a male domain, coupled with the failure of women to acknowledge the biases existence sets up an unrealistic relationship. The researchers postulated that rather than denying biases exist, we must acknowledge them so that we can move on and reform education. They felt that the reforms need to occur outside, as well as inside, the classroom, and must include parents, especially mothers. The attitudes of all parties involved must be changed for reform to be effective. Riegle–Crumb and Moore (2013) found that females were underrepresented in the engineering course they studied. Although female students made up 50% of the enrollment at the high schools, they only comprised an average of 14% of course enrollees. Women in the classes shared similar academic backgrounds with their male classmates, but the women were more likely to have a parent who worked in engineering or a scientific field. ... • 49. Relationship Between Gender Bias And Gender Essay This study focuses on the relationship between gender bias, gender ideology, and gender roles in everyday life. The study analyzes how differences in gender affect professors' behavior in the classroom. My research question is how do men and women view professors' treatment of students based on gender? Some basic guiding questions are: In your opinion and experience, do professors treat certain groups of students differently? Who are these students? Specifically, do professors treat men vs. women differently in the classroom? Why do you think professors do/don't do this? My hypothesis was that respondents would think professors call on men in the classroom due to their stereotypical qualities of being competitive, confident, and dominant. The overwhelming majority of people describe women as shy, compassionate, and timid . Men are more willing to speak up and shout out an answer in the classroom because of their confidence and dominance. Given these stereotypical traits it would be more likely for a male to answer a question, get called on, or engage in a conversation with the teacher rather than a women because of women's timid traits . I believe that the majority of men are less likely to filter a response and think before they speak in class, therefore leading them to get called on by the professor to share their opinion. From my own experience I have seen this begin to change over the years possibly because of the increase in women in the social and political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Interestingly, there seem to be many factors that influence the performance of facial recognition, such as age, gender, race and even particular social or cultural groups that people belong to. This experiment explores whether there is gender bias in face recognition. Own–gender bias in facial recognition is the tendency to recognise individuals from one's own gender better than individuals from the other gender (Herlitz & Lovén, 2013). Categorisation–Individuation model: (Herlitz & Lovén, 2013) Categorisation: classification of face according to shared group features Individuation: classification of faces according to individual features Individuation is more effective with faces you are most familiar with. • 53. The One Child Policy And Gender Bias Everyday, people talk about major global issues, such as the economy, access to better health care, and education. However, one major issue that still needs to be addressed in particular is access to education for women in various countries. Women's access to education is more limited in China in comparison to the access to education in the United States, due to the one–child policy and gender bias. Women's access to education in China is much more limited than it is to women in the United States and one main reason for this is something called the one–child policy. The one–child policy basically states that families in China are only allowed to have one child. Before the one child policy existed, parents had families with more than one child; this often led to parents favoring the male child (Lee, 2012, p. 41). When parents favor their male child, this is referred to as "son preference" and son preference is something that has continued in China among most parents for centuries (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Male children, therefore, are preferred and more privileged, leaving little or no opportunity for the female children to progress educationally. "This gender bias has resulted in significant gender inequalities in many respects, such as the large gap in the literacy rate or in educational attainment between the genders" (Lee, 2012, p. 41). Both the gender bias and son preference have led to the wide literacy gap as a consequence and this is something that needs to change. If a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Harper Lee chooses to address gender bias in her powerful and provoking novel called To Kill a Mockingbird. Gender bias occurs far too often, and Lee clearly holds a true understanding of the powerful impact it makes on our society as a whole. All through the novel, any reader could easy see the negative impact that gender bias can do to a community, society and even nation. Gender bias most efficiently is portrayed by how Jem and Aunt Alexandra relates to Scout, by the fact that women could not usually work jobs and last of all, the way that Mayella is portrayed and understood in court. Gender bias in Maycomb occurs in Scout's own home between her and her own family members. Jem and Scout would often times fight, like normal siblings, but it was clear that at times, Jem took it too far by speaking words of hurtful bias towards Scout's gender. After Jem hurts her, Scout doubts the power and beauty of being a female by stating, "I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that's why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find some to play with" (54). For instance, gender bias in the workforce is one of the most common areas where women and men are treated differently. Women are "supposed to" work in fields such as nursing, office work, and so on; while men work in the fields of construction, engineering, athletics, etc.. In addition, there is a clear difference in the pay amount and promotions that men and women receive. What's the situation and where does it need changing? What laws have been passed? Before anything, some may ask, what gender bias is well, gender bias can be defined as the discrimination of one gender, giving the other gender more favoritism. Gender bias can also refer to the unequal treatment of certain individuals, whether female or male. This treatment can be clearly seen in the workplace standpoint. Gender bias in the workforce has been present for centuries. It is a persistent problem that, despite the progress that has already has been made, there is still much to be done before it can disappear. It was, however, an unavoidable decision when the Convention's leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women, must be "subservient" to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors, or chaplains in the military service" – (Jimmy Carter, 2009). In A. L. Cook's 2010 study,36 The Denied Calling: A Look at the Role of Women in the Southern Baptist Church (SBC), she discusses the uneven history of the church in regard to its female members. In earlier years of the SBC, women were ordained to preach and ordained as deacons. Beginning in 1984, this act was rescinded with the caveat that women leaders ordained earlier than 1984 can retain their ordination. This has resulted in women leaders leaving the church.36 After the1984 resolution, opposition began to build both within and outside the Southern Baptist Convention. When attending hospitals or clinics, I am often assisted by a female nurse and usually a male physician. Gender bias has largely been present within the medical field, especially when discussing nurses, physicians, or simply even medical school students. Discrimination based on your gender should be nothing held against us in the eyes of the medical field. Looking back into time, the association of women in nursing began in the mid–1800's. Many of our elders have been raised associating nursing as a feminine occupation, and they have passed this belief onto their offspring. This belief has been passed down through several generations, but as time is passing, gender roles are becoming less common, and we need to translate this into nursing. When talking about gender equality, most of the time we think of women fighting for the opportunities that are provided to men. This situation is almost completely reversed. • 69. Gender Bias In The Elizabethan Era In England The issue of gender bias has been in play in every society since the creation of man. After mankind had sinned, eating the fruit, God punished man, woman and serpent. To the woman, He said "Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you." (Genesis 3:16b). In each society, however, men and women played different roles. Although I don't necessarily disagree with the gender bias that exists and has existed, I am still shocked at how differently people of different genders lived differently in the past. My opinion is that people are making gender bias in the world today much worse than it seems. This can be seen history, biblical events and personal experience. In the Elizabethan Era in England, there was a great difference between the treatment of men and women. Elizabethan women were to be subservient to men and relied on a male relative to support them. After a marriage, the women were expected to run households and take care of children. On the other hand, men dealt their jobs and were allowed to go around and have fun. Women in this era were, although treated with respect, still somewhat looked down on and it was very difficult for a woman without a male relative to live well. This is very different from today's society, as there are many independent women living around the world. I am quite shocked at the way the Elizabethan women had practically no say in things, as in many cultures, and that they had no choice over their marriage. Everything ... For example we thought that men would get more sports scholarships than women and women would get more STEM scholarships than men This, we thought, was because the colleges were trying to draw in genders to certain fields. We thought that males would get more scholarships because colleges want more male athletes and that women would get more STEM scholarships because they want to draw more women into the STEM fields. Gender Bias? Contrary to our original ideas, our research showed us there was not a bias in the areas we thought. In fact, our research revealed to us that there was not actually any true gender bias in financial aid and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the study, the higher proportion of aid fluctuated between genders, but the difference was almost insignificant. This does not show that there are any true biases within athletic aid. STEM Scholarship Programs Another one of the main areas we expected to find gender biases was the STEM Scholarship programs. The STEM program is a very successful program which was designed to provide resources and opportunities to underrepresented groups. In order to research this, we looked into a specific scholarship program geared toward the STEM program at Wright State University. The Wright Science Technology and Engineering Preparatory Program is an academic pre– engineering program at Wright State University. This program provides resources and financial incentives to encourage students to pursue degrees in the STEM field. Wright STEPP Students By Gender This graph shows the distribution of students involved in the program based on gender. As you can see, the undergraduates that are part of the program are dominantly females, while the graduate students are much more balanced, but there are slightly more males. STEM Scholarship Programs We recently interviewed Barb Gunnison who works as the Special Programs Coordinator in the Learning Resource Center here at Behrend. She was a big part of the STEM Scholarship Program that we used to have here.

  • 74. Gender Bias In The Early Greek Culture Gender Bias in the Early Greek Culture It's important to know that discrimination is the unjust treatment of a person or thing based on age, race, and or sexual orientation (CITE THIS). Discrimination is seen throughout the world's history in forms of slavery, social inequality, racial bias, and gender inequality. Unfortunately, women in history also faced discrimination by not having much of the same rights as men did. More specifically, when looking at the history of the Greeks, one can clearly point out gender inequality in everyday life, law, and even literature. Athenian women were the subjects of bias in day–to–day life. A women's property was controlled by her father until she entered an arranged marriage, usually at the age of fourteen. Her husband would then "supervise" her and that was because it was "believed that a woman could not act independently"( PAGE NUMBER). If they left the house or attended court they were accompanied by a male. They didn't receive formal educations and couldn't act in plays. Women essentially couldn't do anything. Women were seen as inferior to men and therefore were treated like such. This idea bled into the belief that women should do things at home while the man goes off to work. Men were taking advantage of women by stripping them from any potential power by controlling every aspect of their lives. Although it may seem odd that women did not fight for their rights, many of them feared the consequences for not obeying her husband, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Gender Bias in Education Gender bias has existed in education since the inception of schooling. According to the National Women's History Museum (NWHM), during the 1700's, women were denied access to secondary schooling, and were only given the most basic education deemed necessary to fulfill the "women's duties" (NWHM 1). Research from the National Coalition for Women and Girls in Education (NCWGE) has shown that when Title IX was introduced in 1972, girls were able to participate in any state–funded activity, resulting in protest from those who believed gender bias did not exist (NCWGE 1). The opposition argued that girls are just different from boys, and incapable of doing the same things. The gender bias in schools across America, since the conception of schooling, has led to hardships and stereotypes faced by females in education and society. During the 1700's, the education of women was basic. Some girls were taught how to read, strictly to read the Bible, and they were taught skills considered useful, like knitting, sewing, and other household duties. It was considered strange and undesirable for a woman to be well educated. As the 1800's began, female academies began to be formed, which provided women with a similar education to men, teaching math, writing, reading, and history, but separate of the opposite gender. Heading into the 1900's, African American women were finally Higgins 2 given a proper education, although separate of whites (NWHM 3). With the creation of Title IX in ...
