2. About the writer :
Forster is one of the influential literary figures
of twentieth century. He was born in London on
January1, 1879. Educated at Tonebridge School
and King’s college, he travelled Italy, Greece
and then came to India where he studied
different cultures and examined different social
classes. He had got sound knowledge about
India and the Indians. He had deep analysis of
the rising conflicts, the stress and strain
between the rulers and the ruled. The twist
later on, between them gave birth to the Indian
Independent Movement the reasons of which
have clearly been pinpointed in A Passage to
India (Attila 23).
3. About the novel :
This novel written by E.M Forester. In this novel,
A Passage to India Forester reflects on his
experiences during his travels of India. It is
considered of his most famous works which were
written by him after his two visits in India
In 1911 and 1921.The time Forster travelled
India, was the period when India was under the
British raj. There were two races: the East and
the West; the English – the colonizers and the
Indians- the colonized (Degan 29).
A Passage to India was the outcome of Forster’s
lingering studies in India which transformed the
novel into an interesting document. He argues
that this novel is a shift from realism to a serious
and historical document based on facts and his
own experiences. Forster represented the
relationships of the English with Indians very
realistically and criticized the English for being
rude and inert.
4. In this presentation we will discuss
about British-Indian conflict in the
novel “ A passage to India’’
5. Introduction:
The Indian subcontinent was ruled
by the British Empire for almost 90
years. The reason that made The
British Empire colonized India was
to take advantages of India since it
has many fertile lands and natural
resources. the Colonialism began
with the establishment of an
English trading company in India.
And after the failed of Sepoy
rebellion in 1857 , the British
government officially ruled India in
1858.
6. During the long colonial period, and as a result of the
racial oppression and cultural misunderstanding , a
conflict arose between the British and the Indians. ‘’ a
passage to India ‘’ presents this conflict between the two
people, it also shows the difficulty of the friendship
between them under that kind of situation .
7. There is many reasons that lead to the conflict
between the Indian and the British people , and
some of which are:
1- the arrogance of the British in contrast of
native pride of the Indian people. British people
thinks they were better than the Indians .
8. 2-The differences between English and India are in many
aspects , such as different religion . In India the were
Muslims , Hindus and Christians . Also the different life
styles and cultures of these two people lead to the
misunderstanding between them .
9. One of the most important issues that is portrayed in A
Passage to India is the arrogance of the British ruling
class in contrast with the native pride of the Indian
people. The ruling people always feel superior to
themselves and tries to keep themselves aloof from the
native and the result is the hatred and bitterness that
are generated in the minds of the native people against
the ruling class.
10. At that time the British people used to treat the Indians
with disrespect. It is demonstrated by Major Calleneder's
summon to Aziz and his wife's oblivious attitude towards
Aziz. This sense of superiority had a tremendous impact
on the native people and they remarked bad comments
against them.
11. Another examples are Mr. Turton and his wife ,
They despise the Indians .At the Reception party they
invited just the British people there and rich Indians. Just
a perfect Material relationship. Mr. McBryde who thinks
that inferiority of dark-skinned races to light-skinned ones
and Mr. Ronny and . Each one of them look down on the
Indians differently .
12. At the beginning of the novel Aziz did not like to make
friends with English and he ignore them . After he met
Mrs. Moore in a mosque he feel that relationship with
the English possible .
13. Religion is probably the most definitive factor in the way
Indians lead their lives, particularly if they practice
Hinduism and this is why the clash between Hinduism and
Christianity in A Passage to India parallels the conflict
between the Indians and the British. Hinduism is best
represented in the novel by professor Godbole, and
Christianity is epitomized in Mrs.
14. Moore who comes to India with the kindness and
understanding heart of a devout Christian but leaves
morose and peevish. Perhaps she is haunted into this
state by professor Godbole’s strange song. It is this song
that forces Mrs. Moore and Adela Quested into emotional
cocoons from which they only escape to meet horrible
circumstances: Mrs. Moore is terrorized to the point of
apathy and Mrs. Quested meets horror in caves.
15. In brief the conflict between Indian and British was because of
the differences between the to country in religion , culture.
And as long as the British keep treating the Indian with less
respect this conflict will not end . That was clear in the novel .
in the beginning the relation ship was cold between them and
when some British try to befriend Indian it success because they
respect each other , at the end this friendship between them
fail .
The conflict between the two country effect the friendship
between them in India .
