U.A.E:Sharjah National Oil Corp. launches gas storage project
TradeArabia + NewBase
Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC) has announced the start-up of its new gas storage project.
This follows a small-scale pilot phase using existing infrastructure that has been running since early
2017.
The first gas was introduced to the project on January 1, 2021 following a turbulent year and marking
a new era for SNOC. The project was completed on time and on budget and within a year from the
EPC contract being awarded in December 2019.
SNOC will enter into a new area of business with the completion of this project and will help balance
the gas supply and demand for Sharjah and meet the required supply flexibility for Sharjah’s power
sector, said a top official.
"The completion of this project is an outstanding achievement considering the local and international
supply chain challenges we met due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was completed without any
operational, safety or environmental incidents," remarked its CEO Hatem Al Mosa.

The project included the installation of high
pressure (HP) gas compression units, HP gas
pipeline, utilities and support facilities, metering
and tie-ins to existing plant and wells. It will be
operated in a fully automated mode with world-
class technical and safety standards. The new
infrastructure is designed to allow future
expansion.
"The timely launch of this project is a major new business development activity for SNOC. It will
allow us to store excess gas in the winter to satisfy the summer peak demand as well as provide a
readily available strategic reserve for energy security allowing us to respond to unexpected
operational or market issues," he added.-TradeArabia News Service

UAE and Britain powering ahead to green energy targets
Copyright: Arab News © 2021 All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (Syndigate.info).
The UAE has shown foresight in the greentech space by laying out its Energy Strategy 2050, With
climate change and resource scarcity looming, the global green technology sector is leading the
charge to create a cleaner energy future.
Green technology (greentech) is a broad term for innovative companies that are working toward
carbon-neutral solutions for a sustainable planet.
In tandem with its historically hydrocarbon-powered economy, the UAE is now a pioneer in energy
diversification, launching some of the world’s most innovative solar, wind and waste-to-energy
projects.
Home to a growing population and rising energy demand, the UAE is leveraging its abundant
renewable resources and global technology partners to dramatically reduce its carbon footprint.
Chief among its collaborators is the UK, which has a long history of greentech expertise and
implementation.
According to Sarah Heineman, head of renewable energy at the UK Department for International
Trade, there is vast potential for investment and cross-collaboration between the UK and UAE within
the greentech industry.
“The British energy sector has one of the most advanced energy systems in the world. It is at the
forefront of the transition to decarbonize power generation and has attracted significant private
investment into innovation,” she said.
“Over the last five years, relative power emissions in the UK have fallen faster than in any other G10
nation,” Heineman noted, adding that Britain was the first major economy to pass laws for net zero
carbon emissions.
Ambitious UAE energy vision
The UAE has shown foresight in the greentech space by laying
out its ambitious Energy Strategy 2050. According to the
International Renewable Energy Agency, green energy has
advanced rapidly in the GCC countries since 2014.
The Gulf project pipeline reached almost seven gigawatts of
new power generation capacity by 2018, after record-breaking
bids in renewable energy auctions in the UAE and Saudi Arabia
made solar power cost-competitive with conventional energy technologies.

HIGHLIGHTS
• In tandem with its historically hydrocarbon-powered economy, the UAE is now a pioneer in energy
diversification, launching some of the world’s most innovative solar, wind and waste-to-energy
projects.
• Home to a growing population and rising energy demand, the UAE is leveraging its abundant
renewable resources and global technology partners to dramatically reduce its carbon footprint.
Chief among its collaborators is the UK, which has a long history of greentech expertise and
implementation.
As well as being home to the world’s largest single-site solar park, Dubai is pioneering waste-to-
energy innovation with the Al-Warsan project — which has the capacity to process 1.9 million tons
of municipal solid waste per year and power around 135,000 homes.
The UAE’s transition to cleaner energy is helping Britain make the shift to net zero in the UK too.
Abu Dhabi-owned energy firm Masdar is leading investment, research and development, and
commercialization of renewables in the UAE, and has made multi-billion pound investments in three
offshore wind farms in the UK. It has also invested millions in Britain’s electric vehicle charging
infrastructure.
Clean energy innovation
A 2018 UN report revealed that global investment in renewable energy and green technology
processes surpassed $200 billion in 2017; $2.9 trillion has been invested in sources like solar and
wind power since 2004.
In the UK, academia and research centers work closely with greentech companies to develop and
commercialize innovative technologies to meet global demand. As the government continues to
invest in the sector, Britain has inked hundreds of patents for leading environmental solutions.
“The UK — with its strong pedigree in renewables — is well-placed to help the UAE power ahead
with its innovative energy vision and achieve its ambitious targets,” said Patrick Moody, British
ambassador to the UAE.

UK greentech startups
British startups have already made significant inroads in helping to shape the UAE’s greentech
sector. Northern Ireland-based Kiverco has been chosen to design and build the solution that will
recycle all waste from Expo 2020 Dubai — a global event staged over six months that will see 25
million visits.
Kiverco installed the plant in early 2020, which will divert the highest percentage of landfill waste
than any previous Expo. The recycling solutions will recover ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals,
plastic bottles, plastic film, paper and cardboard. Organic waste from the sprawling Expo 2020 Dubai
South site will be converted into fertilizer, and construction material will be reused in roads.
Global sales manager at Kiverco, Con Gallagher, said: “The UAE is leading the charge when it
comes to sustainable policies. Kiverco now has five active plants in the Gulf region. We are seeing
more and more interest as governments turn their focus to mass-recycling strategies.”
UK-based Solar Water Plc., the world’s first carbon-neutral hydro-infrastructure dome, designed to
produce clean water for municipal and industrial consumption, is in talks with the UAE government
to implement its innovative glass technology.
The dome houses vast parabolic mirrors that capture the sun’s heat; this energy evaporates
incoming seawater, which condenses and precipitates as fresh water, creating a constant water
cycle within the dome. Salt is extracted from the brine as a by-product and sold commercially,
ensuring that neither salt nor brine is returned to the ocean.
“In the last nine months, even amid the coronavirus pandemic, we have created a pipeline of
projects in the Middle East,” said David Reavley, CEO of Solar Water. “I think there will be enormous
demand over the next two or three decades. We are solving a big problem as the world progresses
into climate change vulnerability.”
Patrick Moody, British ambassador to the UAE, concluded: “The UK’s thriving renewable energy
sector has the expertise and practical know-how to harness the UAE’s abundant renewable
resources and futuristic sustainability vision. I see great potential for collaboration between the UK
and the UAE.”

Senegal Sees 2023 Start for $4.8 Billion BP-Backed Project
Bloomberg - Katarina Hoije
The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field development, straddling the offshore waters of Mauritania and
Senegal, is expected to produce its first gas in 2023 following delays related to the coronavirus
pandemic, according to Senegal’s Oil Minister Sophie Gladima.
The two countries and international oil companies BP Plc and Kosmos Energy Ltd. are collaborating
on the $4.8 billion project set to produce 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas LNG annually and
70 million cubic feet of natural gas a day in its first phase, to be equally shared between Senegal
and Mauritania, Gladima said in response to emailed questions.
“The start of the pandemic coincided with a key period corresponding to the development of the oil
and gas fields,” she said. “Many development-related activities, such as the mobilization of
resources and people, the construction phases on various sites around the world and installations
were affected.”
The delay from a planned 2022 start has denied Senegal much-needed oil and gas revenues as its
economy seeks to recover from the impact of the pandemic, which pushed down its 2020 economic
growth target to 0.7%. Between 2014 and 2017, reserves of more than 1 billion barrels of oil and
40,000 billion cubic feet of gas were found in Senegal -- most of them shared with Mauritania,
according to the International Monetary Fund.
That’s prompted Senegal to be hailed as one of the region’s most promising new producers and a
possible future member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries.
“Any talk of joining any international organization or not is premature,” said Gladima. “Senegal is
focused on the development of its oil projects to meet its objective of starting production from 2023,”

she said. The resources will be used “to build an economy that’s connected and competitive,”
through the reduction of electricity costs, the development of local content, and industrialization.
Cheaper Power
Power plants run by the state-owned Senelec and independent producers such as
Turkey’s Karpowership are expected to switch from heavy fuel to gas after gas-to-power projects
are completed, President Macky Sall said at a climate conference in October.
+
“There’s a lot resting on gas-to-power,” said Kissy Agyemang-Togobo, a managing partner at
Songhai Advisory Group Ltd. “Electricity is expensive in Senegal -- the cost of production is high,”
with many plants running on imported fuel, she said.
Senegal’s Sangomar project, developed by Perth, Australia-based Woodside Energy, with an
estimated production capacity of 75,000 to 100,000 barrels of oil per day, is also set to start
production in 2023, Gladima said. The $4.2 billion project will receive 18% of its funding from state-
owned oil company Petrosen, she said.
The country had already started to reap benefits from its discoveries when the pandemic hit. The
government’s revenues from the hydrocarbons sector reached 22.8 billion CFA francs ($42.5
million) in 2019, a 37% increase from 2018, according to a report by the National Committee of
Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The rise that year was driven by a tax adjustment of
5.21 billion CFA francs paid by Kosmos Energy.
Another gas field, Yakaar-Teranga, a resource of 15 to 20 trillion cubic feet, seeks to start production
in 2023 or 2024, she said.

OPEC crude output cuts should help U.S. shale profits in 2021
Reuters + NewBase
A decision by OPEC and allied countries to cut crude production through March delivered a late
Christmas present for U.S. shale firms that have slashed costs, but any rise in prices spurred by the
unexpected move may be just a modest stocking stuffer.
U.S. crude oil production has fallen 2 million barrels per day in the last year as low prices and
demand forced shale producers to cut their losses. Investors had already been pressuring the
industry to curb spending and boost returns before the pandemic hit. Shale output was quickly cut,
but might return quickly if prices keep rising.
On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, said it would voluntarily reduce its
production by 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March, after Russia pushed to increase
output, worried about U.S. shale capitalizing on the group’s cuts.
Russia and Kazakhstan will increase their output, reluctant to cede market share to the United
States. Overall, OPEC+ had been due to restore 500,000 bpd in each of the two months. Saudi
officials were concerned new increases would outpace demand during new coronavirus lockdowns.
Prices for West Texas Intermediate on Friday topped $52 per barrel, and the 12-month futures’
price, which producers use to plan spending on new wells, hit $51.37 a barrel, up from $44.63 at
the start of December.
BOTTOM LINES TO BENEFIT
Higher crude prices will fall directly to U.S. producers’ bottom lines given recent cost cuts and
commitments to keeping output flat. Companies pledged to keep production flat and use any price
increases to boost investor returns or pay down debt.

Rising prices in recent years have “tended to be a bit of a mirage,” said Thomas Jorden, chief
executive of Cimarex Energy. “We’re going to be highly disciplined in setting a budget,” he added
at a Goldman Sachs conference on Thursday.
In top two U.S. shale fields, oil and gas companies are profitable in the $30 per barrel to low $40s
per barrel range, according to data firm Rystad Energy. This year’s higher prices could push the
shale group’s cash from operations up by 32%, Rystad said.
Another factor that will benefit producers is low oilfield service costs. Excess capacity at the
companies that provide fracking sand and services cut fees and have not been able to raise them.
“Margins are terrible,” said Chris Wright, chief executive of Liberty Oilfield Services, the second-
biggest fracking company in North America. “They’re slightly better now then they were six months
ago, but they’re still terrible.”
ACTIVITY REMAINS DEPRESSED
Liberty has kept existing customers through the pandemic, but pricing remains so low it has not
made sense to go after new clients. Demand for fracking services is improving but falls short of
levels that would boost U.S. shale production, he said.
Shale producers historically lifted production budgets with rising oil prices, said Linda Htein, senior
research manager at consultancy Wood Mackenzie. But “this time is maybe a little bit different”
because global demand remains uncertain, she said.
Oil would have to hit $60 to $65 per barrel to restore U.S. output by 1 million barrels per day while
improving investor returns, said Raoul LeBlanc, a vice president at data provider IHS Markit.
Energy executives in Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and northern New Mexico in a Federal
Reserve Bank of Kansas City poll released Friday the said oil prices would have to average $56 per
barrel for them to substantial increase drilling. The industry pulled back activity so much last year
that oilfield work this year will mean “mitigation of declines rather than growth,” said Sarp Ozkan, a
senior director at analytics firm Enverus.

U.S. Imports No Saudi Crude (0MBPD) for First Time in 35 Years
Bloomberg + NewBase
The U.S. didn’t import any Saudi crude last week for the first time in 35 years, a reversal from just
months ago when the Kingdom threatened to upend the American energy industry by unleashing a
tsunami of exports into a market decimated by the pandemic.
Eliminating the reliance on Middle East oil has been the dream of every U.S. Administration since
the presidency of Jimmy Carter in 1977. Just 12 years ago, when Joe Biden became U.S. Vice-
President, American refiners were routinely importing about 1 million barrels a day of crude from
Saudi Arabia, the second-largest supplier to the U.S after Canada and seen as a major security risk.
Just three presidential terms later, that flow has fallen to zero. It is the most visual manifestation of
how little America now relies on Middle East oil, after shaping its foreign policy for decades around
its need for crude. If this abstinence from Saudi oil continues, it would weaken the economic, political
and military links that have defined relations between Riyadh and Washington for decades.
The lack of deliveries follows a slump in crude shipments to the U.S. that left the desert kingdom
in recent months. Since tankers from Saudi Arabia take about six weeks to reach import terminals
on either the west or Gulf coasts, the drop is only starting to show up now.
This is the first week America had no deliveries based on available weekly data through June 2010
from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A longer history of monthly figures shows this is
the first time there were no Saudi imports since September 1985.
Earlier this week, OPEC and its allies reviewed their production plans, allowing small increases for
Russia and Kazakhstan in February and March, with the rest keeping production unchanged. Then
Saudi Arabia surprised even its fellow producers by announcing a unilateral cut to its own
production of a further 1 million barrels over the next 2 months. The OPEC leader’s decision caused
global benchmark Brent oil futures prices to surge beyond $54 a barrel and its U.S. counterpart,
West Texas Intermediate crude, to break through $50.

The supply cuts which date back to a producer agreement last year, have helped shore up crude
prices, even as fuel consumption struggles to return to pre-pandemic levels. In the past month, oil
prices have risen on hopes that demand could improve as a number of vaccines are starting to be
administered to combat the health crisis.
“While the U.S. imports of Saudi oil hitting zero is historic, its likely this is temporary and and only
an aberration given the current low refinery runs and deep Saudi production cuts that are going to
increase, against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic environment,” said Karim Fawaz, Director
of Research and Analysis for Energy at IHS Markit.
America is still in the throes of the pandemic, with record infections in many states forcing new
restrictions, while some other parts of the world are recovering. U.S. gasoline
consumption plunged to the lowest in years during the usual high-demand Thanksgiving and
Christmas holiday periods.
The demand loss is so acute some U.S. refineries have been idled. “Throughput is still below where
it was before the crisis because of reduced domestic demand. So why send more here when Asia
is where recovery has been clear,” said Sandy Fielden, director of oil and products research at
Morningstar Inc.
For Saudi Arabia, cutting shipments to the U.S. is the quickest way to signal to the wider market
that it’s tightening supply. The government is alone in publishing weekly data on crude stockpiles
and imports, which carry enormous influence among oil traders. Other big petroleum consuming
nations, like China, publish less timely information about oil supplies.
In May and June, Saudi deliveries to the U.S. more than doubled from a year ago in the aftermath
of a bitter price war with Russia. The onslaught prompted Senator Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican,
to tweet in April: “My message to the Saudis: TURN THE TANKERS THE HELL AROUND.”
American refiners received the final installment of that bumper load in early July.
Since then, Saudi oil shipments to the U.S. have steadily declined. In November and then again in
December, they delivered only 73,000 barrels a day to customers, preliminary U.S. Energy
Information Administration data show.

Oil prices with Brent above $55/B, with Virus & expected stock draw
Reuters + NewBase
Oil prices slipped on Tuesday as investors remained concerned about climbing coronavirus cases
globally, but expectations of a drawdown in crude oil inventory in the United States for a fifth straight
week kept losses in check.
Brent crude oil futures at $55.75 a barrel by 0700 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI)
at $52.17 a barrel. See details in below charts”-
Worldwide coronavirus cases surpassed 90 million on Monday, according to a Reuters tally, as
nations around the globe scramble to procure vaccines and continue to extend or reinstate
lockdowns to fight new coronavirus variants.
In Asia, Japan is planning to widen a state of emergency beyond its capital Tokyo to stem the spread
of COVID-19 while China is implementing movement curbs in some parts of the country.

“I think the market will be rapid to conclude that yesterday’s modest pullback in price, provided the
virus spread in China remains contained, was but a blip on the radar screen,” said Stephen Innes,
chief global market strategist at Axi in a note, citing the prospect of increased economic stimulus in
the United States.
President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office on Jan. 20 with his Democratic party in control of both
Houses, has promised “trillions” in extra pandemic-relief spending.
U.S. crude oil stockpiles likely fell for a fifth straight week, while refined products inventories were
seen up last week, a preliminary Reuters poll showed on Monday.
The poll was conducted ahead of reports from industry group American Petroleum Institute later on
Tuesday and the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the U.S. Department
of Energy, on Wednesday.
Brent could rise to $65 per barrel by summer 2021, Goldman Sachs said, driven by Saudi cuts and
the implications of a shift in power to the Democrats in the United States. The Wall Street investment
bank had previously predicted oil would hit $65 by year-end.

Saudi cut to boost oil market de-stocking, even as demand falters
By Ahmad Ghaddar of Reuters
Saudi Arabia’s voluntary oil production cut is expected to bring the oil market into deficit for most of
2021 even as new lockdowns to contain the spread of the coronavirus batter oil demand, analysts
say.
Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, surprised the market on Jan. 5 with a voluntary output
cuts of 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March.
The move came as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies - a group
known as OPEC+ - agreed most producers would hold output steady in February and March, while
allowing Russia and Kazakhstan to raise output by a modest amount.
With coronavirus infections spreading rapidly, producers are wary of a new blows to oil demand
which could lead to rising inventories.
“We remain in uncharted territory as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, but [OPEC+] has
so far succeeded in both putting a floor below prices and reducing volatility, which should encourage
further cooperation,” Barclays said.
News of the cut boosted oil prices to an 11-month high, with backwardation, when prompt prices
trade at a premium to future prices, widened, which could encourage traders to take oil out of
storage.

Still, and largely as a result of the Saudi cut, the bank sees a small deficit in February, a revision
from an implied build of 0.6 million bpd previously.
It expects the oil market to be in deficit for the remainder of the year, peaking at 2.3 million bpd in
September, or nearly 3% of global oil supplies for that month.
“In the most optimistic case which includes full OPEC+ compliance and the voluntary Saudi cut, we
see crude stocks decreasing by 1.3 million bpd for February, and 0.8 million bpd for March,” Rystad
head of oil market research Bjornar Tonhaugen said.

The 10 Ways Renewable Energy’s Boom Year Will Shape 2021
Bloomberg - Brian Eckhouse + Will Mathis
Even after Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on almost everything else, the new year begins with surging
growth for renewable energy. “2020 was the year of positive surprises for the environment in a way
that very few saw coming,” says Jeff McDermott, head of Nomura Greentech. “It was the breakout
year in sustainability and infrastructure.”
Growth will likely continue into 2021, fueled in part by last year’s major turning points. China has
now committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, putting the world’s biggest market for solar
and wind power on the path to ramp up installations as it begins its next five-year plan. Some
analysts have started predicting that the U.S. power sector is approaching peak natural gas. That
would leave room for solar-panel installations to build on the ongoing boom.
To understand what’s driving the renewable expansion—as well as what might hold it back—we’ve
put together a guide to the biggest recent developments and the major forces shaping the global
renewable market in 2021.
Residential installations in the U.S. dropped nearly 20% in the second quarter of 2020 from the
first—the most ever—as the pandemic prompted stay-at-home orders, according to Wood
Mackenzie and the Solar Energy Industries Association. By the end of the year, however, the sector
bounced back and the country added 19 gigawatts of total solar power, based on projections in
December from Wood Mackenzie and SEIA. That would be slightly more power than existed in the
entire nation of Colombia at the end of 2019, according to BloombergNEF.

Installations doubled in China
Even after the government locked down large swathes of the country early in the year, businesses
still wanted solar. The country’s main solar industry group expects a record surge in business over
the next five years following President Xi Jinping’s September announcement that the country will
zero out carbon emissions by 2060.
A battery boom in the U.S.
New battery-storage capacity in the U.S. more than doubled in the third quarter of 2020 from the
second, according to Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association. Projects in
California were a key reason for the surge.

Spain emerges as solar powerhouse
Electricity from solar farms in the country with Europe’s greatest solar potential was up over 60% in
2020 compared to 2019, generating over 15,000 gigawatt hours of power, according to data from
the country's grid manager Red Electrica.
While the sunny Southern European country still has about a third of the installed solar capacity as
the EU’s leader Germany, Spain’s sector is set to grow at about double the Germans’ pace in the
next two years, according to BloombergNEF.
Renewables top fossil fuels in European energy
During the height of the pandemic, when overall power demand sank, renewable power's share of
the grid surged in Europe. About 40% of the electricity in the first half of 2020 in the European Union
came from renewable sources, compared with 34% from plants burning fossil fuels, according to
environmental group Ember.

U.K. goes coal-free for more than two months
A 67-day period became Britain’s longest stretch without coal since the Industrial Revolution and
helped make 2020 the country’s greenest y ear yet for its power grid.
Britain is going to completely phase out the polluting fuel by 2025 as a growing share of its power
comes from wind farms. Prime Minister Boris Johnson also vowed to ban new gas-power cars by
2030 and spend $1 billion this decade to capture carbon emissions from at least two industrial hubs.

Solar installations dropped in India—by a lot
India's debt-burdened utilities were further battered by the world’s largest lockdown in 2020, leading
to a 72% drop in solar installations and the slowest addition of wind power in more than a decade.
On the plus side, though, bids to develop new solar projects continued to set new records—meaning
that once power company finances are in order, it’s a good bet that solar will be the cheapest option.
Another bit of good news was that clearer skies when factories and streets were empty meant that
there wasn't as much smog blocking the sunshine, allowing for higher generation from the country's
existing panels.
Australia’s grid is overwhelmed
High power prices and abundant sunshine have spurred a love affair with rooftop solar, with about
29% of households now outfitted with panels.
That's wreaking havoc on power utilities with daytime demand for electricity from the grid falling to
record lows in three states in 2020, leaving expensive power plants running well below capacity.

Solar-panel makers face rising prices
An explosion and a flood shut down two Chinese factories that produce polysilicon, a crucial material
for photovoltaic cells, sending prices up 75% in less than two months. Solar glass prices also soared
as increased use of two-sided, or bifacial, panels boosted demand, while capacity was constrained
by limits on heavily polluting glass factories in China.
Rising costs have so far not affected sales, but they have rippled through the solar supply chain,
with module prices experiencing the first quarterly rise since 2015. That could be bad news for
project developers who bid low prices assuming equipment costs would continue to follow their long
historic decline.
A new climate-change risk
While electricity shutoffs prompted by wildfire risk has contributed to mounting U.S. homeowner
interest in rooftop systems and batteries, Northern Californians in September learned a cruel
irony: smoke from a large blaze blotted out the sun, and so rooftop solar withered.

This follows a small-scale pilot phase using existing infrastructure that has been running since early 2017. The first gas was introduced to the project on January 1, 2021 following a turbulent year and marking a new era for SNOC. The project was completed on time and on budget and within a year from the EPC contract being awarded in December 2019. SNOC will enter into a new area of business with the completion of this project and will help balance the gas supply and demand for Sharjah and meet the required supply flexibility for Sharjah’s power sector, said a top official. "The completion of this project is an outstanding achievement considering the local and international supply chain challenges we met due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was completed without any operational, safety or environmental incidents," remarked its CEO Hatem Al Mosa.

Page 3 UAE and Britain powering ahead to green energy targets Copyright: Arab News © 2021 All rights reserved. Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (Syndigate.info). The UAE has shown foresight in the greentech space by laying out its Energy Strategy 2050, With climate change and resource scarcity looming, the global green technology sector is leading the charge to create a cleaner energy future. Green technology (greentech) is a broad term for innovative companies that are working toward carbon-neutral solutions for a sustainable planet. In tandem with its historically hydrocarbon-powered economy, the UAE is now a pioneer in energy diversification, launching some of the world’s most innovative solar, wind and waste-to-energy projects. Home to a growing population and rising energy demand, the UAE is leveraging its abundant renewable resources and global technology partners to dramatically reduce its carbon footprint. Chief among its collaborators is the UK, which has a long history of greentech expertise and implementation. According to Sarah Heineman, head of renewable energy at the UK Department for International Trade, there is vast potential for investment and cross-collaboration between the UK and UAE within the greentech industry. “The British energy sector has one of the most advanced energy systems in the world. It is at the forefront of the transition to decarbonize power generation and has attracted significant private investment into innovation,” she said. “Over the last five years, relative power emissions in the UK have fallen faster than in any other G10 nation,” Heineman noted, adding that Britain was the first major economy to pass laws for net zero carbon emissions. Ambitious UAE energy vision The UAE has shown foresight in the greentech space by laying out its ambitious Energy Strategy 2050. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, green energy has advanced rapidly in the GCC countries since 2014. The Gulf project pipeline reached almost seven gigawatts of new power generation capacity by 2018, after record-breaking bids in renewable energy auctions in the UAE and Saudi Arabia made solar power cost-competitive with conventional energy technologies.

Chief among its collaborators is the UK, which has a long history of greentech expertise and implementation. As well as being home to the world’s largest single-site solar park, Dubai is pioneering waste-to- energy innovation with the Al-Warsan project — which has the capacity to process 1.9 million tons of municipal solid waste per year and power around 135,000 homes. The UAE’s transition to cleaner energy is helping Britain make the shift to net zero in the UK too. Abu Dhabi-owned energy firm Masdar is leading investment, research and development, and commercialization of renewables in the UAE, and has made multi-billion pound investments in three offshore wind farms in the UK. It has also invested millions in Britain’s electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Clean energy innovation A 2018 UN report revealed that global investment in renewable energy and green technology processes surpassed $200 billion in 2017; $2.9 trillion has been invested in sources like solar and wind power since 2004. In the UK, academia and research centers work closely with greentech companies to develop and commercialize innovative technologies to meet global demand. As the government continues to invest in the sector, Britain has inked hundreds of patents for leading environmental solutions. “The UK — with its strong pedigree in renewables — is well-placed to help the UAE power ahead with its innovative energy vision and achieve its ambitious targets,” said Patrick Moody, British ambassador to the UAE.

Page 5 UK greentech startups British startups have already made significant inroads in helping to shape the UAE’s greentech sector. Northern Ireland-based Kiverco has been chosen to design and build the solution that will recycle all waste from Expo 2020 Dubai — a global event staged over six months that will see 25 million visits. Kiverco installed the plant in early 2020, which will divert the highest percentage of landfill waste than any previous Expo. The recycling solutions will recover ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, plastic bottles, plastic film, paper and cardboard. Organic waste from the sprawling Expo 2020 Dubai South site will be converted into fertilizer, and construction material will be reused in roads. Global sales manager at Kiverco, Con Gallagher, said: “The UAE is leading the charge when it comes to sustainable policies. Kiverco now has five active plants in the Gulf region. We are seeing more and more interest as governments turn their focus to mass-recycling strategies.” UK-based Solar Water Plc., the world’s first carbon-neutral hydro-infrastructure dome, designed to produce clean water for municipal and industrial consumption, is in talks with the UAE government to implement its innovative glass technology. The dome houses vast parabolic mirrors that capture the sun’s heat; this energy evaporates incoming seawater, which condenses and precipitates as fresh water, creating a constant water cycle within the dome. Salt is extracted from the brine as a by-product and sold commercially, ensuring that neither salt nor brine is returned to the ocean. “In the last nine months, even amid the coronavirus pandemic, we have created a pipeline of projects in the Middle East,” said David Reavley, CEO of Solar Water. “I think there will be enormous demand over the next two or three decades. We are solving a big problem as the world progresses into climate change vulnerability.” Patrick Moody, British ambassador to the UAE, concluded: “The UK’s thriving renewable energy sector has the expertise and practical know-how to harness the UAE’s abundant renewable resources and futuristic sustainability vision. I see great potential for collaboration between the UK and the UAE.”

Page 6 Senegal Sees 2023 Start for $4.8 Billion BP-Backed Project Bloomberg - Katarina Hoije The Grand Tortue Ahmeyim gas field development, straddling the offshore waters of Mauritania and Senegal, is expected to produce its first gas in 2023 following delays related to the coronavirus pandemic, according to Senegal’s Oil Minister Sophie Gladima. The two countries and international oil companies BP Plc and Kosmos Energy Ltd. are collaborating on the $4.8 billion project set to produce 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas LNG annually and 70 million cubic feet of natural gas a day in its first phase, to be equally shared between Senegal and Mauritania, Gladima said in response to emailed questions. “The start of the pandemic coincided with a key period corresponding to the development of the oil and gas fields,” she said. “Many development-related activities, such as the mobilization of resources and people, the construction phases on various sites around the world and installations were affected.” The delay from a planned 2022 start has denied Senegal much-needed oil and gas revenues as its economy seeks to recover from the impact of the pandemic, which pushed down its 2020 economic growth target to 0.7%. Between 2014 and 2017, reserves of more than 1 billion barrels of oil and 40,000 billion cubic feet of gas were found in Senegal -- most of them shared with Mauritania, according to the International Monetary Fund. That’s prompted Senegal to be hailed as one of the region’s most promising new producers and a possible future member of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. “Any talk of joining any international organization or not is premature,” said Gladima. “Senegal is focused on the development of its oil projects to meet its objective of starting production from 2023,”

The resources will be used “to build an economy that’s connected and competitive,” through the reduction of electricity costs, the development of local content, and industrialization. Cheaper Power Power plants run by the state-owned Senelec and independent producers such as Turkey’s Karpowership are expected to switch from heavy fuel to gas after gas-to-power projects are completed, President Macky Sall said at a climate conference in October. + “There’s a lot resting on gas-to-power,” said Kissy Agyemang-Togobo, a managing partner at Songhai Advisory Group Ltd. “Electricity is expensive in Senegal -- the cost of production is high,” with many plants running on imported fuel, she said. Senegal’s Sangomar project, developed by Perth, Australia-based Woodside Energy, with an estimated production capacity of 75,000 to 100,000 barrels of oil per day, is also set to start production in 2023, Gladima said. The $4.2 billion project will receive 18% of its funding from state- owned oil company Petrosen, she said. The country had already started to reap benefits from its discoveries when the pandemic hit. The government’s revenues from the hydrocarbons sector reached 22.8 billion CFA francs ($42.5 million) in 2019, a 37% increase from 2018, according to a report by the National Committee of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The rise that year was driven by a tax adjustment of 5.21 billion CFA francs paid by Kosmos Energy. Another gas field, Yakaar-Teranga, a resource of 15 to 20 trillion cubic feet, seeks to start production in 2023 or 2024, she said.

Page 8 OPEC crude output cuts should help U.S. shale profits in 2021 Reuters + NewBase A decision by OPEC and allied countries to cut crude production through March delivered a late Christmas present for U.S. shale firms that have slashed costs, but any rise in prices spurred by the unexpected move may be just a modest stocking stuffer. U.S. crude oil production has fallen 2 million barrels per day in the last year as low prices and demand forced shale producers to cut their losses. Investors had already been pressuring the industry to curb spending and boost returns before the pandemic hit. Shale output was quickly cut, but might return quickly if prices keep rising. On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, said it would voluntarily reduce its production by 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March, after Russia pushed to increase output, worried about U.S. shale capitalizing on the group’s cuts. Russia and Kazakhstan will increase their output, reluctant to cede market share to the United States. Overall, OPEC+ had been due to restore 500,000 bpd in each of the two months. Saudi officials were concerned new increases would outpace demand during new coronavirus lockdowns. Prices for West Texas Intermediate on Friday topped $52 per barrel, and the 12-month futures’ price, which producers use to plan spending on new wells, hit $51.37 a barrel, up from $44.63 at the start of December. BOTTOM LINES TO BENEFIT Higher crude prices will fall directly to U.S. producers’ bottom lines given recent cost cuts and commitments to keeping output flat. Companies pledged to keep production flat and use any price increases to boost investor returns or pay down debt.

Page 9 Rising prices in recent years have “tended to be a bit of a mirage,” said Thomas Jorden, chief executive of Cimarex Energy. “We’re going to be highly disciplined in setting a budget,” he added at a Goldman Sachs conference on Thursday. In top two U.S. shale fields, oil and gas companies are profitable in the $30 per barrel to low $40s per barrel range, according to data firm Rystad Energy. This year’s higher prices could push the shale group’s cash from operations up by 32%, Rystad said. Another factor that will benefit producers is low oilfield service costs. Excess capacity at the companies that provide fracking sand and services cut fees and have not been able to raise them. “Margins are terrible,” said Chris Wright, chief executive of Liberty Oilfield Services, the second- biggest fracking company in North America. “They’re slightly better now then they were six months ago, but they’re still terrible.” ACTIVITY REMAINS DEPRESSED Liberty has kept existing customers through the pandemic, but pricing remains so low it has not made sense to go after new clients. Demand for fracking services is improving but falls short of levels that would boost U.S. shale production, he said. Shale producers historically lifted production budgets with rising oil prices, said Linda Htein, senior research manager at consultancy Wood Mackenzie. But “this time is maybe a little bit different” because global demand remains uncertain, she said. Oil would have to hit $60 to $65 per barrel to restore U.S. output by 1 million barrels per day while improving investor returns, said Raoul LeBlanc, a vice president at data provider IHS Markit. Energy executives in Colorado, Oklahoma, Wyoming and northern New Mexico in a Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City poll released Friday the said oil prices would have to average $56 per barrel for them to substantial increase drilling. The industry pulled back activity so much last year that oilfield work this year will mean “mitigation of declines rather than growth,” said Sarp Ozkan, a senior director at analytics firm Enverus.

Page 10 U.S. Imports No Saudi Crude (0MBPD) for First Time in 35 Years Bloomberg + NewBase The U.S. didn’t import any Saudi crude last week for the first time in 35 years, a reversal from just months ago when the Kingdom threatened to upend the American energy industry by unleashing a tsunami of exports into a market decimated by the pandemic. Eliminating the reliance on Middle East oil has been the dream of every U.S. Administration since the presidency of Jimmy Carter in 1977. Just 12 years ago, when Joe Biden became U.S. Vice- President, American refiners were routinely importing about 1 million barrels a day of crude from Saudi Arabia, the second-largest supplier to the U.S after Canada and seen as a major security risk. Just three presidential terms later, that flow has fallen to zero. It is the most visual manifestation of how little America now relies on Middle East oil, after shaping its foreign policy for decades around its need for crude. If this abstinence from Saudi oil continues, it would weaken the economic, political and military links that have defined relations between Riyadh and Washington for decades. The lack of deliveries follows a slump in crude shipments to the U.S. that left the desert kingdom in recent months. Since tankers from Saudi Arabia take about six weeks to reach import terminals on either the west or Gulf coasts, the drop is only starting to show up now. This is the first week America had no deliveries based on available weekly data through June 2010 from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. A longer history of monthly figures shows this is the first time there were no Saudi imports since September 1985. Earlier this week, OPEC and its allies reviewed their production plans, allowing small increases for Russia and Kazakhstan in February and March, with the rest keeping production unchanged. Then Saudi Arabia surprised even its fellow producers by announcing a unilateral cut to its own production of a further 1 million barrels over the next 2 months. The OPEC leader’s decision caused global benchmark Brent oil futures prices to surge beyond $54 a barrel and its U.S. counterpart, West Texas Intermediate crude, to break through $50.

Page 11 The supply cuts which date back to a producer agreement last year, have helped shore up crude prices, even as fuel consumption struggles to return to pre-pandemic levels. In the past month, oil prices have risen on hopes that demand could improve as a number of vaccines are starting to be administered to combat the health crisis. “While the U.S. imports of Saudi oil hitting zero is historic, its likely this is temporary and and only an aberration given the current low refinery runs and deep Saudi production cuts that are going to increase, against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic environment,” said Karim Fawaz, Director of Research and Analysis for Energy at IHS Markit. America is still in the throes of the pandemic, with record infections in many states forcing new restrictions, while some other parts of the world are recovering. U.S. gasoline consumption plunged to the lowest in years during the usual high-demand Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday periods. The demand loss is so acute some U.S. refineries have been idled. “Throughput is still below where it was before the crisis because of reduced domestic demand. So why send more here when Asia is where recovery has been clear,” said Sandy Fielden, director of oil and products research at Morningstar Inc. For Saudi Arabia, cutting shipments to the U.S. is the quickest way to signal to the wider market that it’s tightening supply. The government is alone in publishing weekly data on crude stockpiles and imports, which carry enormous influence among oil traders. Other big petroleum consuming nations, like China, publish less timely information about oil supplies. In May and June, Saudi deliveries to the U.S. more than doubled from a year ago in the aftermath of a bitter price war with Russia. The onslaught prompted Senator Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican, to tweet in April: “My message to the Saudis: TURN THE TANKERS THE HELL AROUND.” American refiners received the final installment of that bumper load in early July. Since then, Saudi oil shipments to the U.S. have steadily declined. In November and then again in December, they delivered only 73,000 barrels a day to customers, preliminary U.S. Energy Information Administration data show.

President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office on Jan. 20 with his Democratic party in control of both Houses, has promised “trillions” in extra pandemic-relief spending. U.S. crude oil stockpiles likely fell for a fifth straight week, while refined products inventories were seen up last week, a preliminary Reuters poll showed on Monday. The poll was conducted ahead of reports from industry group American Petroleum Institute later on Tuesday and the Energy Information Administration (EIA), the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Energy, on Wednesday. Brent could rise to $65 per barrel by summer 2021, Goldman Sachs said, driven by Saudi cuts and the implications of a shift in power to the Democrats in the United States. The Wall Street investment bank had previously predicted oil would hit $65 by year-end.

Page 14 Saudi cut to boost oil market de-stocking, even as demand falters By Ahmad Ghaddar of Reuters Saudi Arabia’s voluntary oil production cut is expected to bring the oil market into deficit for most of 2021 even as new lockdowns to contain the spread of the coronavirus batter oil demand, analysts say. Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, surprised the market on Jan. 5 with a voluntary output cuts of 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March. The move came as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies - a group known as OPEC+ - agreed most producers would hold output steady in February and March, while allowing Russia and Kazakhstan to raise output by a modest amount. With coronavirus infections spreading rapidly, producers are wary of a new blows to oil demand which could lead to rising inventories. “We remain in uncharted territory as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, but [OPEC+] has so far succeeded in both putting a floor below prices and reducing volatility, which should encourage further cooperation,” Barclays said. News of the cut boosted oil prices to an 11-month high, with backwardation, when prompt prices trade at a premium to future prices, widened, which could encourage traders to take oil out of storage.

Page 16 Still, and largely as a result of the Saudi cut, the bank sees a small deficit in February, a revision from an implied build of 0.6 million bpd previously. It expects the oil market to be in deficit for the remainder of the year, peaking at 2.3 million bpd in September, or nearly 3% of global oil supplies for that month. “In the most optimistic case which includes full OPEC+ compliance and the voluntary Saudi cut, we see crude stocks decreasing by 1.3 million bpd for February, and 0.8 million bpd for March,” Rystad head of oil market research Bjornar Tonhaugen said.

Page 17 NewBase Special Coverage The Energy world – Jan-11- -2020 The 10 Ways Renewable Energy’s Boom Year Will Shape 2021 Bloomberg - Brian Eckhouse + Will Mathis Even after Covid-19 has wreaked havoc on almost everything else, the new year begins with surging growth for renewable energy. “2020 was the year of positive surprises for the environment in a way that very few saw coming,” says Jeff McDermott, head of Nomura Greentech. “It was the breakout year in sustainability and infrastructure.” Growth will likely continue into 2021, fueled in part by last year’s major turning points. China has now committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2060, putting the world’s biggest market for solar and wind power on the path to ramp up installations as it begins its next five-year plan. Some analysts have started predicting that the U.S. power sector is approaching peak natural gas. That would leave room for solar-panel installations to build on the ongoing boom. To understand what’s driving the renewable expansion—as well as what might hold it back—we’ve put together a guide to the biggest recent developments and the major forces shaping the global renewable market in 2021. Residential installations in the U.S. dropped nearly 20% in the second quarter of 2020 from the first—the most ever—as the pandemic prompted stay-at-home orders, according to Wood Mackenzie and the Solar Energy Industries Association. By the end of the year, however, the sector bounced back and the country added 19 gigawatts of total solar power, based on projections in December from Wood Mackenzie and SEIA. That would be slightly more power than existed in the entire nation of Colombia at the end of 2019, according to BloombergNEF.

The country’s main solar industry group expects a record surge in business over the next five years following President Xi Jinping’s September announcement that the country will zero out carbon emissions by 2060. A battery boom in the U.S. New battery-storage capacity in the U.S. more than doubled in the third quarter of 2020 from the second, according to Wood Mackenzie and the U.S. Energy Storage Association. Projects in California were a key reason for the surge.

Page 19 Spain emerges as solar powerhouse Electricity from solar farms in the country with Europe’s greatest solar potential was up over 60% in 2020 compared to 2019, generating over 15,000 gigawatt hours of power, according to data from the country's grid manager Red Electrica. While the sunny Southern European country still has about a third of the installed solar capacity as the EU’s leader Germany, Spain’s sector is set to grow at about double the Germans’ pace in the next two years, according to BloombergNEF. Renewables top fossil fuels in European energy During the height of the pandemic, when overall power demand sank, renewable power's share of the grid surged in Europe. About 40% of the electricity in the first half of 2020 in the European Union came from renewable sources, compared with 34% from plants burning fossil fuels, according to environmental group Ember.

Britain is going to completely phase out the polluting fuel by 2025 as a growing share of its power comes from wind farms. Prime Minister Boris Johnson also vowed to ban new gas-power cars by 2030 and spend $1 billion this decade to capture carbon emissions from at least two industrial hubs.

Page 21 Solar installations dropped in India—by a lot India's debt-burdened utilities were further battered by the world’s largest lockdown in 2020, leading to a 72% drop in solar installations and the slowest addition of wind power in more than a decade. On the plus side, though, bids to develop new solar projects continued to set new records—meaning that once power company finances are in order, it’s a good bet that solar will be the cheapest option. Another bit of good news was that clearer skies when factories and streets were empty meant that there wasn't as much smog blocking the sunshine, allowing for higher generation from the country's existing panels. Australia’s grid is overwhelmed High power prices and abundant sunshine have spurred a love affair with rooftop solar, with about 29% of households now outfitted with panels. That's wreaking havoc on power utilities with daytime demand for electricity from the grid falling to record lows in three states in 2020, leaving expensive power plants running well below capacity.

Page 22 Solar-panel makers face rising prices An explosion and a flood shut down two Chinese factories that produce polysilicon, a crucial material for photovoltaic cells, sending prices up 75% in less than two months. Solar glass prices also soared as increased use of two-sided, or bifacial, panels boosted demand, while capacity was constrained by limits on heavily polluting glass factories in China. Rising costs have so far not affected sales, but they have rippled through the solar supply chain, with module prices experiencing the first quarterly rise since 2015. That could be bad news for project developers who bid low prices assuming equipment costs would continue to follow their long historic decline. A new climate-change risk While electricity shutoffs prompted by wildfire risk has contributed to mounting U.S. homeowner interest in rooftop systems and batteries, Northern Californians in September learned a cruel irony: smoke from a large blaze blotted out the sun, and so rooftop solar withered.
