Immigrants To America
The great influx of immigrants who came to the United States during the nineteenth century faced
xenophobic sentiments from everybody– commoners and government officials alike. Consequently,
the immigrants who came to America in search of economic opportunity were attributed with the
characteristics of filth, laziness, and inferiority. Accordingly, editorial cartoons of the time
encapsulated these nativist views held by Anglo–Saxons. One such cartoon, "The Stranger at the
Gate", depicted a rugged immigrant carrying various pieces of luggage labeled "disease", "poverty",
and "anarchy" (Stranger). Through the use of symbolism, the cartoon reflects the popular sentiment
that immigrants are filthy and offer America nothing but disease and poverty.

Illegal Immigrants
Contrary to belief, many immigrants do not want to come to America, they are forced to move to
America because they have no other option. Immigrants aren't criminals crossing the border to bring
in drugs or steal jobs, they are creating a new life in America. Immigrants are fleeing their country
because of poor government, poor education, and crime. Immigrants deserve our sympathy, when
pilgrims came to America, they too, were forced to leave their native country and hope for a better
life. Furthermore, immigrants boost the economy and abide the law. While immigrants do take jobs
from other Americans, those positions were not made specifically for Americans. Immigrants have
every right as americans do to work. As far as illegal immigrants "stealing" jobs, it is not their fault
for getting hired, it is the corporation that hired them. To immigrants, america is a symbol of liberty
and a chance to succeed, Americans should not punish them for seeking a more prosperous future.
Security is a big problem to many people, they will be happy to know that immigrants aren't
criminals, in fact they are less likely to commit a crime than someone born in the United States.
Research shows that immigrant men around the ages 18–49 are one fifth to one half as likely to be
imprisoned than Americans (Pérez–Peña). This illustrates how twisted our view is on immigrants,
media has pinned immigrants as dirty criminals. With President Trump in office, his single sided
view on immigrants only makes things worse. Not only are immigrants law–abiding, they also take
up arms and protect our nation; around 8,000 noncitizens join the military each year (Powers).
These patriots will lay down their life for America and Americans still persecute them, this is
unacceptable. Lastly, the logistics of coming to the United States after a long journey and a fruitless
life only to be incarcerated doesn't make any sense. Furthermore, study shows that even illegal
immigrants pay their taxes when they could easily get away with it. "Undocumented immigrants are
trying to abide by the law and are fulfilling their civic and financial responsibilities." Say's Magaña–
Salgado, filing their taxes and abiding the law helps them in judicial cases (Blanco). The

Illegal Immigrants : An Illegal Immigrant
Imagine as a young Mexican woman citizen in her mid–twenties who is living in a horrible
conditions in the Southern part of Mexico with no job and with four kids. She also has terrible
sickness condition and doesn 't have any health care and insurance to take care of her and her
children. The mother is thinking about to move from her current place to a much better place, U.S.,
but however, she has not filled out any legal documents to move to the United States of America. So
then, she picked up everything she has and her kids, too. When she arrives at the national border of
Mexico and United States, then she have to get across the border without anyone founds out,
because she is not legally to do that, anyway. The most important reason to ... Show more content on

The following immigrants do get in the U.S. from Mexico, or anywhere in Central America do
carrying viruses and, or diseases, so the immigrants can easy contact to other citizens in the United
States and pass the virus around to other people with minimum effects. The almost immigrants is
not so health, clean and don't take care of themselves, because of, immigrants' pervious living
condition. Like for an example, couple years ago in the West Africa there were a major outbreak
with horrible virus, called the "Ebola." According to Wendy Rhymer and Rick Speare, in the
"Countries' Response to WHO's Travel Recommendations During the 2013–2016 Ebola Outbreak,"
on January 1, 2017, they states that, "Ebola virus diseases – previously known as Ebola
haemorrhagic fever – was first identified in 1976 in Zaire..." (Rhymer and Speare 10). The Ebola
virus was around, at least in the 1970's and it's still a terrible virus to have. So then, if the illegal
immigrant get in the country by cargo ship, then contact other people with the Ebola and the Ebola
will spread very quickly. It's so important to make sure that, every sea ports, borders, trains and etc.
where anyone, basically can get in that special place without anyone knowing.
So what if, for an example, an immigrant who emigrant from the country of Angola who has the
Ebola, the immigrant is on the cargo ship heading towards Miami, once the immigrant arrives in
Miami and he got in the city. The first two

February 27, 2012 The Benefits of Illegal Immigrants Are illegal immigrants or undocumented
immigrants beneficial to America's economy? Most illegal immigrants have a positive impact on the
United States (U.S.) economy. Illegal immigrants have a positive impact on the United States
economy because they increase our tax revenue, they add to our social security, and they also
increase our employment rates." In 2000, statistics revealed 8.7 million illegal immigrants resided in
the United States" (Knickerbocker pgs.11–12). "A study of illegal immigrants living in Texas
showed a 420 million dollar increase in the states economy" (Strayhorn). Companies risk hiring

However, they have provided 33 percent of services to construction companies, 17 percent to
industries, 16 percent to repair and installation, 13 percent to administrative support and sales, 10
percent to professional and management businesses, 8 percent to material moving and
transportation, and 3 percent to agriculture (Pew Hispanic Center). If illegal immigrants were able to
earn a legal status their giving would be even greater (Ewing) and they could help better their
families. Releasing illegal immigrants is very important to America's economic wealth in the future
(Ewing). Many United States citizens say that illegal immigration is a crime. According to (Border
Control) an entry into the United States illegally should be a misdemeanor and is like sneaking into
the country as a violation. Many things about illegal immigration laws is that why is it illegal to
come to a better country to try to better their lives as people. It is understandable that the country
that they were born in has a low–income environment and it is not their fault if they are willing to
do anything necessary to make it in this world. Every human being living should have access to the
American dream. It should matter if you are from Mexico, China, or Japan we are all created equal
and I strongly do not agree with the illegal immigration rules why stop a person trying to travel

Credibility For Immigrants
The U.S Government should make citizenship more accessible for immigrants because there were
111,000 immigrants deported when Trump was in office. They should be helping immigrants, it is
also difficult for immigrants to gain citizenship. Also the government will stop young adults from
doing great things. Why they should be helping immigrants because the statue of liberty shows
pulling in immigrants not deporting them. Some evidence is Barack Obama helped 4 million
immigrants. Also George w. Bush wanted to reform a bill the bill would allow certain
undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship. But the bill was not made. In 2013 a bill similar to
George w. Bush was passed by the senate. But polls showed that a large chunk of the republican

Status Of Immigrants
Do immigrant people that crossed the border, deserve the same legal status as U.S Citizens, and
should children born here with immigrant parents receive the same rights as a U.S citizen? An
estimate of 60% of immigrants in America have lived here for over a decade, and the law states that
foreigners that have lived in America over 5 years, are eligible for naturalization/ become a citizen.
Also if a foreigner is married to a U.S citizen, and has lived in America for over 3 years, they are
eligible as well. Children born here with immigrant parents have always had the same legal status as
a casual U.S citizen because they're born here, which is supported by the 14th Amendment.

citizen; According to Barack Obama, JD, "It will lift these individuals out of the shadows and give
them a chance to earn their way to a green card and eventually to a citizenship". Giving immigrants
an opportunity to have a bigger legal status will lift them up, and make them seek for bigger and
better things, for example, a citizenship. Immigrants shouldn't be gifted the same legal status than
American citizens but should be given the opportunity to earn their way to be a citizen of the United
States Of America. Also According to Hillary Rodham Clinton, JD, " American people support
comprehensive immigration reform–– not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it
strengthens families, our economy, and our country" ( procon.org). Giving immigrants a citizenship
is the right thing to do, and the American people support it, because it benefits our country, and the
Americans know it's the correct thing to do. Giving immigrants the honor of becoming a citizenship
will bring to the country so much more than stronger families, economy, and a country. There are
plenty of immigrants in my community that pay taxes, respect the law, and attempt to help out the
country in any way or form they can. The one thing all immigrants are seeking for is the honor to
become a U.S citizen. So many American citizens and other qualified people have the same opinion
as me such as, ex–president Barack Obama and ex–president candidate Hillary Clinton all believe
that Immigrants deserve a chance to earn, and accomplish their dream, which is become a U.S

Immigrant Contributions
As Woodrow Wilson once said, "We came to America, either ourselves or in the persons of our
ancestors, to better the ideals of men, to make them see finer things than they had before, to get rid
of the things that divide and make sure of the things that unite."
The Immigrant Contribution and A Quilt of a Country are both similar and different. Both the article
from Anna Quindlen and the excerpt from President John F. Kennedy's speech highlight the
importance of immigrants' contributions to both the culture and diversity of America, while also
noting some of the negative things.
The Immigrant Contribution and A Quilt of a Country both set the tone that immigrants are
important in America. Anna Quindlen states that America is an improbable ... Show more content on

Quindlen seems to touch more on the conflicts that immigrants have caused or participated in, in
America, not so much the positives. On the other hand, Kennedy seems to touch more on the
benefits immigrants have had on America. Jewish boys would walk several blocks out of their way,
just to avoid the Irish divide of Chester Avenue (Quindlen 14). Many different scientists and
investors who benefited the United States were not born in America: Albert Einstein (Germany),
Michael Pupin (Serbia), Alexander Graham Bell (Scotland)... (Kennedy 24–25). Kennedy and
Quindlen focus on separate ideas, Kennedy on what immigrants have done for our country, and
Quindlen on what conflicts immigrants have caused. In addition, the diction the author's create are
different. Quindlen uses a more sophisticated tone, she asks, what is the point of a country where
Arab cabbies chauffeur Jewish passengers, and Jewish cabbies chauffeur Arab passengers (Quindlen
14)? This creates a more sophisticated and formal tone. On the flip side, Kennedy uses a more
Ordinary and slangy in several occasions. The ideal of the "melting pot" symbolizes the process of
blending many strains into a single nationality, and we have come to realize in modern times that the
"melting pot" need not mean the end of particular ethnic identities or traditions (Kennedy 27). The
"melting pot" is an example of Kennedy's use of slang, and the rest of the

Unauthorized Immigrants
In 2008, I was only ten years old when my parents had finally become official U.S. citizens. Even
though I did not understand the magnitude of the transition from being an immigrant to a United
States citizen at the time, I could tell by how my family reacted when my parents passed that
becoming a citizen was a big deal. Since my parents migrated to the United States as authorized
immigrants, they were eligible to take the U.S. citizenship test after some years of residency, but if
they were unauthorized immigrants, the likely scenario is that my parents would still be
unauthorized today, possibly even deported out of the country, and that is the reality for millions of
unauthorized immigrants in the United States, specifically an estimated eleven million unauthorized
immigrants according to the United States Department of Homeland Security. With so many lives
occupying the population of the U.S., it thus begs the question of whether unauthorized immigrants
should be allowed in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States. Even though that
question may seem answerable with a mere yes or no, the reality of the situation is that there have
been millions of unauthorized immigrants residing in the United States for decades and that
population has yet to stop growing, making any simple solution of granting citizenship to all or
deportation to all impossible. Before the situation of unauthorized immigrants may be addressed, the

Mexican Immigrants And Illegal Immigrants Essay
Current Issues
Many American citizens are responsible for illegal Mexican immigrants' determination to enter the
United States because numerous American citizen's revenue money, drugs, and fame as a lifestyle
which makes America the center of attraction for illegal immigrants to cross the border. It is clear
that most Mexican immigrants transport an abundant amount of money payments and drugs across
the U.S. border in return for more money so gangs and cartels can earn a recognized status through
money and respect. Citizens of the U.S. have impacted and altered the American social economic
status in a negative way. Most Mexican immigrants travel north in groups to cross the United States
border to achieve their goal; live a better life so they can support themselves and their family.
Although there are U.S. customs and border patrol agencies that have a duty to protect and secure
the border from illegal aliens entering the U.S., some still successfully cross and enter the U.S. –
Mexican border illegally. In the book The Devil's Highway, Urrea explains the "Rules of the Game"
where illegal immigrants experience a traitorous journey depending on their guides. Their country
and group leader fail to successfully support the group and citizens of Mexico. Both sides of the
border (Mexico and America) should accept responsibility for illegal transportation of weapons. The
act of illegal weapon trafficking is a major crime for the U.S. – Mexican border. Border patrol

The Benefits Of Immigrants
Being an immigrant in the United States is hard. People come here to work and bring their children,
because there's more opportunities here and the country is known for being a free land. But they are
being sent back to a place where they don't get the same things as they do here.Immigrants are also a
big part of the U.S because most are in the fields, construction, landscaping, and all these jobs that
are hard. Immigrants shouldn't be deported because they are here to work hard, to help out their
families and also live the American dream like any other. Immigrants should not be deported

The same article says families face painful decision wait many years to be a considerd for a visa or
just cross the border with no documentation in order to be reunited with loved ones. I think having
them wait years and years for a visa is torture so instead they just come here illegally. They do this
because they have no choice. Being apart from family is hard and they wanna be together but it's
hard cause they either have to wait for year to able to come or come illegally here just to be with
their children and family members.
A lot of immigrants put their part in the U.S and also in a way make it better and some citizens want
them to stay. In a online article "Californians say undocumented immigrants should get to stay:poll"
by Sharon Bernstein they say "A strong majority of Californians say immigrants benefit their state
and that those who came to the United States illegally should be allowed to remain to live and
work". Residents say that immigrants should stay here cause they help their state. Some are even
agreeing for immigrants to stay cause how much they benefit us and help out."Where 83 percent of
Democrats, 53 percent of Republicans and 70 percent of independents said undocumented
immigrants should be able to stay if they pay a fine and meet other requirements, for a total of 75
percent of all adults interviewed." In this same article it shows the percentages of the people that

Illegal Immigrants : Illegal Chinese Immigrants
In the story of Forbidden Workers – Illegal Chinese Immigrants in New York, we are given a look at
American Society from the perspective of an illegal immigrant who is taken advantage of because
of their status and the vulnerable position that they are put in because of it. Peter Kwong provides a
broad, but subjective, analysis of American life, labor laws, and other key points in immigration.
However, while the message Kwong conveys with this interesting and informational work, it is
hindered by his bias which comes out blatantly throughout, limiting the book that would have
earned a recommendation for the American Psychological Association (ASA) award for the
International Migration category, but instead deserving an honorable mention.
Kwong focuses his work on illegal immigration as being more of a labor problem, as opposed to an
immigration problem and is brought up by the author as early in our reading as the introduction
(Kwong, p. 7, 3rd paragraph) as he admits – "... the problem of illegal immigration, including
Chinese immigration, can only be understood in the context of the underlying supply–and–demand
principle enshrined in traditional U.S. economics." This statement is a legitimate theory as to the
possible cause of the discrimination and other difficulties faced by Chinese immigrants, however, it
is also one of many shots at the U.S. in general as seen just three pages earlier (Kwong, p.4, 2nd
para.) – "Even though America portrays itself as a country of

Chinese Immigrant Discrimination in the United States
In 1849, San Francisco gained popularity among immigrants, people who travel from a foreign
country to permanently live in another country, because of the new job opportunities that would
change their lives. Many eager Chinese people took this rare chance to travel to a new place in order
to make money and improve their poor living conditions. With all of the immigrants coming in from
Asia, especially China, the white Americans grew anxious leading the United States government to
issue the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. This act prevented immigrants from entering the United
States for 10 years. After the span of 10 years stated in the exclusion act, America's leaders decided

support their wives and children in America and had a stronger political standing for higher wages.

What Is The American Dream Of Immigrant Immigrants
The American dream is to build or get a house, family, or job. Immigrants came to this country long
ago in order to chase this dream. The American dream is different for everyone because some
people came here to avoid a financial crisis from wherever they hailed from. While others came here
in order to provide and care for their family. Most people that are indigenous to America or are born
in America have the dream of being rich and/or famous, while foreigners just want a little bit of
money because of where they came from they couldn't get any. Some people even came over here
illegally to avoid their financial crisis, especially immigrants from Mexico who cross the border
illegally. For most immigrants the American dream is to make money or care for their families.
Immigrants most of the time couldn't care or provide for their family so they would pay money so
they could buy a boat to America. After they rode the boat to Ellis Island they would go to the
doctor they had set up there and see if they were healthy. If you were, you could continue on, if not
you were quarantined. If you passed all of the evaluations then you could go into America to care
for your family or do whatever you came over to do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They think the American dream is to be rich, famous, a movie star/actor, or anything along those

family. They might not want to be rich, but instead raise a family. Those people would definitely be

Illegal Immigrants
Most immigrants in the United States can either be part of the middle class or live in poverty. Based
on the results from Ruark and Graham, low–skilled immigrants are more likely to live poverty and
lack of health insurance. In their research, immigrants and their children made up about 32% of
those who lives in America who does not have health insurance (Ruark and Graham "Immigration,
Poverty and Low–Wage Earners") Without statistic data, one could easily draw out a conclusion:
since immigrants cannot obtain a health insurance, they cannot go to the doctor whenever they're ill.
Without proper treatment for critical diseases such as cancer, the immigrants would suffer more than
they should have. Besides the lack of health insurance, there are numerous of cases of deportation of
illegal immigrants. Luis H. Zayas and Mollie H. Bradlee's article "Exiling Children, Creating
Orphans: When Immigration Policies Hurt Citizens" explores the impact of deportation on the
immigrant's families and their children. According to the article, in 2012, the government had
deported about 409,849 illegal immigrants back to their country. If the deportation only involved the
entire family then the issue is not very serious, but it is serious when the illegal immigrant have a
child with an American citizen, thus making the child an American citizen. At this point, the child's
family have to decide whether to leave the child in the United States or bring the child with them. If

An Illegal Mexican Immigrant Immigrants
They slip into the San Diego rail yard furtively, preferably beneath the protective cover of darkness,
jumping fences, eluding guards and dodging two hundred –ton locomotives in a perilous dash for
the most elusive of prizes, a free ride to the north. According to Jose Flores, an illegal Mexican
immigrant seeking work in the United States says, "To be truthful, I have no idea of precisely where
this train goes, other than it takes us to el norte" (Griffin 363+). The fact that each night literally
hundreds of men and women clamber over the barricade is testament to its ineffectiveness and to the
irresistible pull of United States jobs "that on average pay eight times their equivalent in Mexico"
(Griffin 363+ ). Javier Ortega, a 40–year–old auto body repairman from Guadalajara, says, "It doesn
't matter how many people, horses, bicycles, helicopters or planes they use.... People will go. It
doesn 't matter if the fence is electric" (Griffin 363+). These people carry dreams with them in hopes
for a better life. These people are willing to walk day and night through any desert and any river
they come across to achieve the "American Dream." Illegal immigration between Mexico and the
United States is a serious situation that needs to be solved. To better understand this situation, one
must analyze the causes and effects and come up with a solution.

Illegal Immigrants
At the beginning of the 19th century with a big wave of immigrants came to America looking for a
new life (Estrada). Ever since then immigrants shaped America to what it is today (Jawetz). But
eventually it started to become an issue in the everyday life of the American citizens (Jawetz).
Everyday thousands of illegal immigrants cross the border from Mexico to the United States
(Estrada). This can affect The United States in a good way or a bad way (Estrada). Not only do
immigrants come from Mexico; they also come from Asia, Central America, South America,
Europe, and Africa (Estrada). Immigrants have impacted our culture, economy, and is one of the
most controversial category in politics today (Jawetz).
Immigrants can also be a good thing for our economy (Estrada). How, you might ask? Immigrants
that are here illegally will work for very low rates (Estrada). Most average Americans that are
supporting a family will not work a tobacco field for 10 dollars an hour all day 5 days a week
without any benefits? The average American would not make enough money to support a family
working for such low rates (Estrada). 25,000 people come across the U.S. border everyday illegally
for a better life (Jawetz) . It has a negative effect on our country because they bring in drugs and

Immigrant Assimilation
Many researchers have studied the immigrant assimilation in the recent years. America's ethnic
groups have been expected to come together as one and into the mainstream of american society for
decades. Immigrant assimilation is a complex process in which immigrants should not only fully
integrate themselves to a new country but also lose aspects perhaps all their heritage too if
necessary. Social scientists rely on a primary benchmark to assess immigrant assimilation which is
socioeconomic status. A melting pot can be described as a metaphor which indicates a society where
many different types of people blend in as one. Being an immigrant and assimilating to the
American society is hard but immigrants should get use to the American society and if it's possible
immigrants should accept to lose their heritage. The article posted may 1998 "Immigrants shunning
idea of assimilation" William branigin argues that " like many others her neighborhood, where most
of the residents are Mexican immigrants, the jacinto household mixes the old country with the new"
immigrants shouldn't try to keep their heritage still while in america it can cause them to assimilate
less to america or it can cause them to have a harder time to assimilate into the american country.

There are more immigrants incarcerated than natural born citizens.
Research
There are approximately 43 million immigrants in the United States and about 11 million are illegal.
Compared to the total American population, only seven percent of the nation's population are non–
citizens. Approximately 22 percent of inmates in federal prison are non–citizens. (Perez)
Analysis
There are 43 million immigrants in the United states but the immigrant population can only compare
at seven percent to the total Unites states population. There is a major disproportion comparing the
total population of citizens and immigrants. Although there is a larger disparity between the
percentage of immigrants and citizens total population, federal prison is composed of 22 percent of
immigrants. The percentage of immigrants in federal prison have a smaller disparity between
immigrants and citizens. Compared to the population of immigrants and the population of citizens,
immigrants have a larger scale of immigrants in federal prison per immigrant population that the
rate of citizens in federal prison per natural born citizens population.
Research
One quarter of all inmates in California detention centers are Mexican descendant and also more

Immigration: Is There a Limit?
Today, Canada is leading the worlds stand in multiculturalism. Not only do we accept hundreds
upon thousands of immigrants, we give them the freedom to practice their religion, as long as they
follow the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The Charter, specifically the Multiculturalism Act, is the
reason why immigrants are capable of practicing their religion freely. While many people endorse
the idea of a multicultural background, there are those who believe that there sahould be a limit to
what one can do corresponding to their religion.Instead, they believe that these immigrants should

someone under the age of 18 the required treatment based on their cultural beliefs. Implementing
new laws that would target immigrants is not the way Canada acts, nor should it ever be.

ability to congregate and control a neighborhood. This is the bad side of immigrant criminals which
contradicts my support with immigrants because I feel Americans are right on not allowing them to
migrate to the US and do whatever it takes to send them back to their countries and press charges if
they were to re–attempt on migrating to the US. The US should consider helping other foreign
countries by giving some help in finding solutions on how foreign country residents can feel safe
and succeed in their own countries.
On the other hand, we also have other kind of crimes done by immigrants that are at a different
opposite extent from immigrant gang criminals. These crimes can be justified because all these
immigrants want is an opportunity to strive anything they could not achieve in their countries
because of limited/no sources, limited/no opportunities, and/or bad circumstances of country. We
have immigrants who have committed the crime of falsifying a matrimony with an American
citizen. The meaning of this action is where an illegal individual processes a false matrimony and
proves the US Department of Homeland Security that the individual can meet the requirements to

Impacts Of Immigrants
Immigrants are people just like you and me. Immigrants are people who come to live permanently
in a foreign country and like most people in the world, immigrants need jobs to sustain a healthy
living. People in today's society are shaming immigrants and believe they are taking our jobs. Dr.
Apostolos P. Georgopoulos, an immigrant from Greece said, "We risked it all. We left everything
behind, came as a family of four with no guarantee beyond a year, and here we are, doing pretty
well in Minnesota."(Green Card Voice) Immigrants just like Georgopoulos are risking everything to
come to America for a better life. Public Agenda, a New York based group conducted a survey on
what immigrants say about life in the U.S. In the survey, eight in 10 (81 percent) said, "a person has
to work very hard in this country to make it – nobody gives you anything for free."(Farkas, 2003)
Immigrants must work hard in order to become legal immigrants and to get a job. Some jobs look

According to NY times, we are at an all time low for employment at 16 years. We actually need
immigrants to come and work otherwise, we could have a negative economic impact. Immigrants
aren't stealing American jobs, if anything, they do jobs we won't do. Virgil Goode, a Congressman
Goode who represents Virginia 5th District states, wrote in his article Immigration Moratorium
Needed Now, "Immigrants are doing the jobs Americans won't do"(Goode, 2017), and it's true!

"prefer" not to do are high in immigrant workers. An example of a couple of these jobs would be

Synthesis Essay
Prompt: Is the United States a desirable place to immigrate to?
Although some may argue that the United States is the "land of opportunity," or the home of the
"American dream," the reality when it comes to the matter of whether or not the U.S. is a desirable
immigration destination falls flat in that it is nothing better than an advertisement jingle on
television, just a catchy phrase and tune. The truth of the matter is that the United States, as it was in
the 20th century as presented in the provided sources was not the ideal immigration destination as
the United States United States presented immigrants with perils of limited opportunities presented
to the immigrants and unsafe labor and living conditions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the work place, the new immigrants where used as strike breakers, brought in to work in factories
for lower wages than non–immigrants. Although some critics of this argument have argued that
there where plentiful jobs available which was beneficial to the immigrants, the jobs that they where
given where menial and dangerous, as well as exploitive, with many of the wages inhumane. As a
result, many children of the immigrant family's were forced to go directly into the workforce, taking
away from their ability to a "free" education. Carl Sandburg describes the conditions the immigrants
had to endure in his poem "Chicago." In this poem he writes, "On the faces of women and children I
have seen the marks of wanton hunger." In this line of his poem Sandburg shows that the women
and children who were forced to work so that the family could make ends meet showed signs of
cruel hunger and health. This line works to prove the cruel conditions that immigrants were forced
to endure in America. Jacob Riis, famous for his book of photographs titled, "How the Other Half
Lives," represents the poor living conditions of immigrants in his photograph titled "New York:
Tenement Yard." In this photograph, Riis shows the claustrophobia

The changing environment throughout time has caused many families to move out of their
homelands. These families are either forced to make the decision to move out, or they move by their
own desire. Migration and parenthood in a new country are significant transitions that pose stressful
challenges for immigrant and refugee parents. Although living in Canada can be rewarding,
however, there are challenges that immigrants and refugee face through trying to adapt to the culture
of Canada. These challenges may include, battling cultural shock, Language Barriers,
Misconceptions of Homeland and culture, employment, and depression. Moving from where one

Having to move to a new country can cause a cultural shock, with this cultural shock, comes
Language barriers. Many immigrants and refugees are faced with language barriers upon entry into
a new country Language barriers causes an immense amount of difficulties and make simple day to
day interactions seem impossible. More often immigrants and refugees get to Canada with a little to
less fluent grasp of English. Employments, transportations, and even receiving assistance in both
areas is more daunting without a good grasp of English. Immigrants and refugees worry that their
foreign accent and cultural traits will make them seem too different. Immigrants and refuges to
Canada bring a vast amount of benefits that will be beneficial to the Canadian economy, society, and
the country has a whole, this is overlooked because the English language skills of these immigrants
and refugees is often too dwelled on. Refugees and Immigrant parents are usually disadvantaged
and disfavored in terms of finding a meaningful employment because of their English proficiency
levels. Despite most immigrants and refugees have enough knowledge of the English language, if it
is not their first language, they are faced with communication struggles on their arrival to Canada.
Language barriers followed by employment is another challenge faced by immigrant and

Stereotypes Of Immigrants
Stereotypes of Immigrants
Everyone in life wants a better life for themselves and their next generations. Many people in
different countries are migrating to The United States for one or two main goals. Those two goals
are a better opportunity for employment and education. Which in turn, accomplishing either one of
these goals will provide a higher quality of life and a sense of importance for themselves and their
family. However, Americans view the immigrants differently from what they are. Some Americans
view the immigrants with different stereotypes such as being lazy system abusers, dangerous
criminals, and job thieves, just to name a few. However, these stereotypes are not true and does not
represent the majority of immigrant. In actuality, immigrants are very disciplined, hard workers
whom are also highly motivated opportunity chasers, where in these ways they should and need to
be viewed by Americans.
Immigrants are hard workers; however, the Americans are viewing the immigrants as lazy and as a
burden to The United States when in actuality, research shows that, some immigrants come to The
United States legally although they may not have papers to work legally when they first arrive. For
many immigrants the process to get legal documentation to work is a long, tedious, and expensive
process. Even though this issue is very common, many immigrants are positive and productive
contributors in society. On the other hand, there are immigrants who are roaming around the streets,
and looking for places to sleep on the roads. As an immigrant in any country, these things can
happen to anyone, due to the fact that some immigrants do not know anyone as they migrate to a
foreign land. Many immigrants are struggling and are facing many problems that come along their
way as they try to become stable and achieve their goals in The United States. In an article written
by Octavio Blanco titled "Immigrant workers are most likely to have these jobs," he states, "That is
especially the case in America's beauty business, where immigrants made up 63% of those that
provide services as manicurists and Pedicurists, makeup artists, shampooers and skin care
specialists. Slightly more than half of these workers (51%) were

Immigration For Immigrants
Moving to a new place you have never been before is hard. You don't know anybody or where
anything is, it is a whole new world. This can be experienced by every immigrant coming to
America. The United States is the number one country when it comes to immigrant population.
According to Politifact, the US Department of Homeland Security has gathered data of immigrants
coming to the U.S and in 2013 it was 990,553. These immigrants have special laws though, laws
made for immigrants alone and not everyday people. They should have the same rights as
everybody else has.We have the right from the constitution to have the choice to choose our own
language, religion, and beliefs. Immigrants should have the choice to choose how far they would
like to assimilate into American culture, so that they may feel comfortable. Immigrants that want to
learn English should be given the opportunity to learn. In the argumentative essay , "Why Make
Unnecessary Demands," by Jacob Stokes where a man argues for immigrants to be required to learn
English an article that he argues that, " Many Immigrants who desire to learn English are already
struggling for a chance to do so. Cities across the U.S. are experiencing severe shortages of English
teachers, leaving lines of would–be English speakers waiting outside their doors." The Immigrants
who want to learn English to better themselves don't have the opportunity to learn because of lack of
resources. Learning English, to these immigrants, can help

Early education of children is so important because it usually decides whether or not the children go
to college or be successful in life; so this is the reason American government should invest more in
improving the education for the children of immigrants.
I have read about how immigrants struggle to get their education in the United States because of
lack of well qualified ESL teachers, limited resources in schools for immigrants etc. The education
system has been very unfair for the immigrants because very little things are done to help them be
more successful in getting their education. In an article published in Harvard University journal a
researcher says, "Even though one out of every four children in the United States is an immigrant or
the U.S.–born child of immigrants, many schools are ill–equipped to meet their needs," which
shows how the education system has not been fair for the immigrants (Tamer). As we all know there
are lots of immigrants in United States and I think that the education system in United States should
be changed in such a way that it suits everyone including the immigrants. In the same article Tamer
says, "Even though one out of every four children in the United States is an immigrant or the U.S.–
born child of immigrants, many schools are ill–equipped to meet their needs", which shows more
importance of schools and programs to help the immigrants in the United States.

Immigrant Immigrants
Should Immigrants Assimilate or Not?
We all come from different places and ethnicities, and because of having a dream, people fled away
from their home to seek for something to make their life better. Going to a country like United
States, is not only a dream but also, an opportunity because many people think that America is the
best place to settle in, where work, and education are an easy access. Though this statement is partly
true, it is not that easy. Everyone envied because America is a great nation because it's a country of
opportunity, but a part of it also is a mixture of feelings that are hard to explain especially if you are
immigrant. Every day in your life, you are fighting for something in order to fit in and survive.
However, in the process of fitting in or blending to a certain place, people, and culture, it requires a
lot of personal choices and a lot of effort as an immigrant. It does not only affect you as a human,
but also it draws a lot of attention, conflicts and tension between the government and community.
Most immigrants have a harder time to adjust or assimilate even though they speak fluent English
and eat American foods. Whenever you see a person of white complexion, people assumed that blue
eyes and blonde hair are the characteristics of an American, though these are how we perceived
American long time ago, this are still the standards of a few now and doesn't make a big change at
all. The judgement of how a person look physically and how they

Media History and Culture Writing Assignment 2 Film's unique visual and narrative properties in
"The Immigrant" aid in critiquing the popularly held "American Dream". The dream stated that
anyone, even foreigners, could achieve financial/personal success in America if they worked hard,
but Chaplin believes this is not completely true. Narrative qualities of film in "The Immigrant"
present concrete stories and characters that visually demonstrate the hardships, mistreatment, and
luck involved in the misunderstood "American Dream". The exaggerated rockiness of the ship and
the implied death of the female character's mother showed viewers that traveling to America is not
as glamorous as the American Dream makes it out to be. When immigrants finally

A documented immigrant is usually an immigrant who has lived here for a while and have the
chance to expand and maintain a stable lifestyle. They are usually able to manage and work in high
paying jobs. The work that they do usually comes with multiple side benefits such as health care,
sick days, and vacation pay. Jobs, such as cashiers, or driving for a pizza store, or other careers that
require a degree. As long as documented and has the authorization to work, many documented
people are able to settle in Boston, since it's a city with a lot of opportunities. As an undocumented
immigrant, there are not as much jobs available. It is illegal to work. Many usually finds some type
of low–skill jobs to make money to survive. Undocumented immigrants

The Federal Government of Canada should provide not only access to immigration but also make
sure to provide new immigrants with opportunities. Firstly, there are still employment issues for
Immigrants. According to an interview conducted by CBC, interviewing new immigrants and
refugees, Sandy chugh, an immigrant said, "I don't see a lot of growth," when describing his current
job. Despite having years of experience in marketing and a bachelor's degree from Ireland, the 32–
year–old is working in a warehouse for the retailer Best Buy (Dunn, 2016). This relates to the issue
as due to refugees and immigrants not having an absolute experience, yet being highly qualified for
jobs, are not given equal opportunities than the natives who were born and educated in the country.

In 1980, the low–income rate among new immigrants was 1.4 times that of the Canadian–born,
while by 2000 the relative rate was 2.5 times higher. Between 2000 and 2010, the relative low–
income rate between these groups changed little and stood at 2.6 at the end of the decade. The major
regional exception to this pattern was in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, wherein 2010, low–income
rates among new immigrants were 1.2 times that of the Canadian–born (Canada, 2014). This is
significant because more immigrants are being treated unfairly by the natives, and due to that, are
not given different opportunities in their communities. Lastly, immigrants are still finding it hard to
get proper health care due to language barriers. In an article written by the Vancouver Sun,
healthcare was another area of concern identified in the research, with just under half of
respondents, 49% of patients reporting problems understanding or accessing the system (Carmen,

Latino Immigrants
Immigrants have played a vital role in the cultural and economic growth of the United States. Many
of these individuals view the US as a land of educational opportunities, some even considering
higher education (Rivera, 2014). Although immigrants leave their native countries in hopes of a
better life, they experience displacement from their native culture through physical dislocation (Fox,
2007). These immigrants are overcome with challenges pertaining to immigrant stressors, such as
discrimination, as well as educational and political challenges. Specifically, those from Latin
countries often lose their drive to better themselves and often times, accept a place in poverty
(Arellanes, Viramontez Anguiano & Lohman, 2017). However, there are some Latino immigrants,
who regardless of these negative circumstances, are able to showcase persistence in the face of
adversity. This study will explore examples of these individuals, specifically, three Latina
immigrants who persevered despite challenging obstacles and were ultimately able to complete
higher education.
Latino Immigrants
From the beginning of its development, America has drawn in immigrants from all over the world.
Between the years 1990 and 2000, a majority of these immigrants arrived from Mexico and Central
America (Wainer, 2004). As of 2011, up to 40 percent of Latinos living in the US were foreign–born
(Rocha and Matsubayashi, 2012). Due to this rise in the Latino population, Latino adolescents are

The opportunities of racial minorities such as the Chinese or African Americans different from those

Chinese left their home countries due to poverty and famine, cities were the first place they settle
down in, making their way to the US they had great opportunity, from owning their own business,
opportunity to socialize, opportunity of establishing rotating lending pools, and one of the thing was
that they were able to support one another. Moreover, like the Chinese immigrant, European

Chinese and African American immigrants, European immigrant had better opportunities for
example, European immigrants were considerably older, had higher household incomes, and they
were more educated though they were less likely to participate in the labor force. If they did

difference in opportunities that European immigrant had from other immigrants was that you would

Mexican Immigrants
The United States of America was created by Europeans immigrating to North America. Over the
past three hundred years European immigrants have worked hard to develop the United States for it
to become one of the most advanced countries in the world economically, culturally, and militarily.
Although the U.S is made of mainly immigrants who came to this country and made it theirs, they
are not fond of immigration themselves, even the ones closest to them, such as Mexican immigrants.
The U.S. should grant Mexican immigrants citizenship because they are upstanding people and
contribute to American, culturally and economically.
Mexican immigrants go through many dangers in order to get into the U.S. For example, many have
crossed the southern U.S. border which stretches from Texas to California. The border is fenced off
and guarded around the clock, usually some Mexican immigrants chose to sneak through the
checkpoints by hiding in vehicles or by bypassing the fence and border patrol. This method is also
very dangerous because of the environmental factors such as Mexican immigrants having to walk or
run across many miles of desert and swimming across the Rio Grande while also making sure they
are not seen. All of these obstacles in crossing the border could all lead to death. If caught enough
times they could even be imprisoned.
There are times in which Mexican immigrants want to return to Mexico to visit their family
members, but they do not leave the United States

Immigrants in the USA The United States has been the land of opportunity for immigrants. It is a
place where immigrants from all over the world come to build a better dream and future for their
families and leave from poverty, they come with nothing but determination. One thing that every
immigrant brings with them is their culture. A person's culture is strongly tied to the country where
they grew up. It is tied to their relationship with their family. Many people come to America from so
many different places all over the world. For this reason, people call America a melting pot of
cultures immigrants are striving for a better future even though when they migrate to the USA they
don't know the consequences they will face and struggle to be successful living in the United States.
Being an undocumented immigrant is hard and just by when others notice that one is not fluent, they
will begin to treat one differently and even look down on them even though the immigrants adapt to
the melting pot. They have abandoned their cultures to become assimilated into the American
society. In the article, "My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant" by Jose Antonio Vargas, he states,
"However, I grew up this is my home yet even though I think of myself as an American and
consider America my country. My country doesn't think of me as one of its own" (236). In stating
this, Juan adapted living in the USA he is more part of the melting pot, not the salad bowl he feels

The attitudes of immigrants who have arrived recently differ from those who have arrived earlier in
many ways. From 2002–2009 the percentage of votes from a series of questions has changed

another native from their country. The next one question was if they called another immigrant in
their country at least once a week on the phone. The final question was if that immigrant spoke their
native language at home.
The attitudes of immigrants who have arrived here recently differ from the earlier immigrants

Every year, people from different cultures and ethnicity become citizens of the United States.
However, some people see this as a bad thing, which is where other people see this as a problem.
America should be a nation where it should not matter what your race or ethnicity is to others.
America was built upon the ideas and dreams of others. We should be promoting those ideals to
immigrants so they can become citizens. Immigrants should assimilate into American culture
because it could affect a work place, the topic is getting less attention, and they do a lot to come into

newcomer to abandon there old traditions and start a learn American traditions. It can be challenging
to let go, but in response, Tommy De Seno states that, "anyone who won't let go of their old country
makes themselves an outsider here, not the other way around." This quote comes from Frank Sharry,
founder and executive director of America's Voice, who talks about what Latinos and Hispanics do

Undocumented Immigrants
Having nothing and fighting for the American dream just to be thrown to the start again. This is
what undocumented immigrants deal with daily when crossing the border for freedom. Even though
many immigrants are successful and without criminal activity, numerous Americans think they
should be deported back to where they came from. Undocumented immigrants should be granted
citizenship because this is all most immigrants have, immigrants improve the economy, and
immigrants do not cause crime. To start, undocumented immigrant should be able to obtain
citizenship because they have nothing to go back to. Undocumented immigrants come to the United
States to live a more safe fulfilled life. The Gonzalez family from the documentary 30 Days is an
example of this incident. The Gonzalez family had nothing in Mexico, all the family had was walls
for a house with almost no roof. To get water the family ran a hose from a well nearby. This is why
the family came to the United States for a start of a new substantial life. Secondly, undocumented
immigrants come to the United States to support their family. In Mexico, the immigrants do not
make nearly as much of an annual income as Americans do. According to the "Habitat for
Humanity", "More than half of Mexico's employed population make less than 20 dollars a month."
The family does need more of an income to support their family than what they are getting. One last
example is that in Mexico the living conditions are poor. As stated in

Immigrants To America

  • 1. Immigrants To America The great influx of immigrants who came to the United States during the nineteenth century faced xenophobic sentiments from everybody– commoners and government officials alike. Consequently, the immigrants who came to America in search of economic opportunity were attributed with the characteristics of filth, laziness, and inferiority. Accordingly, editorial cartoons of the time encapsulated these nativist views held by Anglo–Saxons. One such cartoon, "The Stranger at the Gate", depicted a rugged immigrant carrying various pieces of luggage labeled "disease", "poverty", and "anarchy" (Stranger). Through the use of symbolism, the cartoon reflects the popular sentiment that immigrants are filthy and offer America nothing but disease and poverty. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Illegal Immigrants Contrary to belief, many immigrants do not want to come to America, they are forced to move to America because they have no other option. Immigrants aren't criminals crossing the border to bring in drugs or steal jobs, they are creating a new life in America. Immigrants are fleeing their country because of poor government, poor education, and crime. Immigrants deserve our sympathy, when pilgrims came to America, they too, were forced to leave their native country and hope for a better life. Furthermore, immigrants boost the economy and abide the law. While immigrants do take jobs from other Americans, those positions were not made specifically for Americans. Immigrants have every right as americans do to work. As far as illegal immigrants "stealing" jobs, it is not their fault for getting hired, it is the corporation that hired them. To immigrants, america is a symbol of liberty and a chance to succeed, Americans should not punish them for seeking a more prosperous future. Security is a big problem to many people, they will be happy to know that immigrants aren't criminals, in fact they are less likely to commit a crime than someone born in the United States. Research shows that immigrant men around the ages 18–49 are one fifth to one half as likely to be imprisoned than Americans (Pérez–Peña). This illustrates how twisted our view is on immigrants, media has pinned immigrants as dirty criminals. With President Trump in office, his single sided view on immigrants only makes things worse. Not only are immigrants law–abiding, they also take up arms and protect our nation; around 8,000 noncitizens join the military each year (Powers). These patriots will lay down their life for America and Americans still persecute them, this is unacceptable. Lastly, the logistics of coming to the United States after a long journey and a fruitless life only to be incarcerated doesn't make any sense. Furthermore, study shows that even illegal immigrants pay their taxes when they could easily get away with it. "Undocumented immigrants are trying to abide by the law and are fulfilling their civic and financial responsibilities." Say's Magaña– Salgado, filing their taxes and abiding the law helps them in judicial cases (Blanco). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Illegal Immigrants : An Illegal Immigrant Imagine as a young Mexican woman citizen in her mid–twenties who is living in a horrible conditions in the Southern part of Mexico with no job and with four kids. She also has terrible sickness condition and doesn 't have any health care and insurance to take care of her and her children. The mother is thinking about to move from her current place to a much better place, U.S., but however, she has not filled out any legal documents to move to the United States of America. So then, she picked up everything she has and her kids, too. When she arrives at the national border of Mexico and United States, then she have to get across the border without anyone founds out, because she is not legally to do that, anyway. The most important reason to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The following immigrants do get in the U.S. from Mexico, or anywhere in Central America do carrying viruses and, or diseases, so the immigrants can easy contact to other citizens in the United States and pass the virus around to other people with minimum effects. The almost immigrants is not so health, clean and don't take care of themselves, because of, immigrants' pervious living condition. Like for an example, couple years ago in the West Africa there were a major outbreak with horrible virus, called the "Ebola." According to Wendy Rhymer and Rick Speare, in the "Countries' Response to WHO's Travel Recommendations During the 2013–2016 Ebola Outbreak," on January 1, 2017, they states that, "Ebola virus diseases – previously known as Ebola haemorrhagic fever – was first identified in 1976 in Zaire..." (Rhymer and Speare 10). The Ebola virus was around, at least in the 1970's and it's still a terrible virus to have. So then, if the illegal immigrant get in the country by cargo ship, then contact other people with the Ebola and the Ebola will spread very quickly. It's so important to make sure that, every sea ports, borders, trains and etc. where anyone, basically can get in that special place without anyone knowing. So what if, for an example, an immigrant who emigrant from the country of Angola who has the Ebola, the immigrant is on the cargo ship heading towards Miami, once the immigrant arrives in Miami and he got in the city. • 4. Illegal Immigrants Michael Jones Dr. Cindy Murillo English 1020 February 27, 2012 The Benefits of Illegal Immigrants Are illegal immigrants or undocumented immigrants beneficial to America's economy? Most illegal immigrants have a positive impact on the United States (U.S.) economy. Illegal immigrants have a positive impact on the United States economy because they increase our tax revenue, they add to our social security, and they also increase our employment rates." In 2000, statistics revealed 8.7 million illegal immigrants resided in the United States" (Knickerbocker pgs.11–12). "A study of illegal immigrants living in Texas showed a 420 million dollar increase in the states economy" (Strayhorn). Companies risk hiring illegal immigrants ... If illegal immigrants were able to earn a legal status their giving would be even greater (Ewing) and they could help better their families. Releasing illegal immigrants is very important to America's economic wealth in the future (Ewing). Many United States citizens say that illegal immigration is a crime. According to (Border Control) an entry into the United States illegally should be a misdemeanor and is like sneaking into the country as a violation. Many things about illegal immigration laws is that why is it illegal to come to a better country to try to better their lives as people. It is understandable that the country that they were born in has a low–income environment and it is not their fault if they are willing to do anything necessary to make it in this world. Every human being living should have access to the American dream. It should matter if you are from Mexico, China, or Japan we are all created equal and I strongly do not agree with the illegal immigration rules why stop a person trying to travel across the world trying to better their lives. • 5. Credibility For Immigrants The U.S Government should make citizenship more accessible for immigrants because there were 111,000 immigrants deported when Trump was in office. They should be helping immigrants, it is also difficult for immigrants to gain citizenship. Also the government will stop young adults from doing great things. Why they should be helping immigrants because the statue of liberty shows pulling in immigrants not deporting them. Some evidence is Barack Obama helped 4 million immigrants. Also George w. Bush wanted to reform a bill the bill would allow certain undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship. But the bill was not made. In 2013 a bill similar to George w. Bush was passed by the senate. • 6. Status Of Immigrants Do immigrant people that crossed the border, deserve the same legal status as U.S Citizens, and should children born here with immigrant parents receive the same rights as a U.S citizen? An estimate of 60% of immigrants in America have lived here for over a decade, and the law states that foreigners that have lived in America over 5 years, are eligible for naturalization/ become a citizen. Also if a foreigner is married to a U.S citizen, and has lived in America for over 3 years, they are eligible as well. Children born here with immigrant parents have always had the same legal status as a casual U.S citizen because they're born here, which is supported by the 14th Amendment. Nowadays, America has started to overpopulate, and American Citizens ... Giving immigrants an opportunity to have a bigger legal status will lift them up, and make them seek for bigger and better things, for example, a citizenship. Immigrants shouldn't be gifted the same legal status than American citizens but should be given the opportunity to earn their way to be a citizen of the United States Of America. Also According to Hillary Rodham Clinton, JD, " American people support comprehensive immigration reform–– not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it strengthens families, our economy, and our country" ( procon.org). Giving immigrants a citizenship is the right thing to do, and the American people support it, because it benefits our country, and the Americans know it's the correct thing to do. Giving immigrants the honor of becoming a citizenship will bring to the country so much more than stronger families, economy, and a country. There are plenty of immigrants in my community that pay taxes, respect the law, and attempt to help out the country in any way or form they can. The one thing all immigrants are seeking for is the honor to become a U.S citizen. So many American citizens and other qualified people have the same opinion as me such as, ex–president Barack Obama and ex–president candidate Hillary Clinton all believe that Immigrants deserve a chance to earn, and accomplish their dream, which is become a U.S ... • 7. Immigrant Contributions As Woodrow Wilson once said, "We came to America, either ourselves or in the persons of our ancestors, to better the ideals of men, to make them see finer things than they had before, to get rid of the things that divide and make sure of the things that unite." The Immigrant Contribution and A Quilt of a Country are both similar and different. Both the article from Anna Quindlen and the excerpt from President John F. Kennedy's speech highlight the importance of immigrants' contributions to both the culture and diversity of America, while also noting some of the negative things. The Immigrant Contribution and A Quilt of a Country both set the tone that immigrants are important in America. Anna Quindlen states that America is an improbable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Quindlen seems to touch more on the conflicts that immigrants have caused or participated in, in America, not so much the positives. On the other hand, Kennedy seems to touch more on the benefits immigrants have had on America. Jewish boys would walk several blocks out of their way, just to avoid the Irish divide of Chester Avenue (Quindlen 14). Many different scientists and investors who benefited the United States were not born in America: Albert Einstein (Germany), Michael Pupin (Serbia), Alexander Graham Bell (Scotland)... (Kennedy 24–25). Kennedy and Quindlen focus on separate ideas, Kennedy on what immigrants have done for our country, and Quindlen on what conflicts immigrants have caused. In addition, the diction the author's create are different. Quindlen uses a more sophisticated tone, she asks, what is the point of a country where Arab cabbies chauffeur Jewish passengers, and Jewish cabbies chauffeur Arab passengers (Quindlen 14)? This creates a more sophisticated and formal tone. On the flip side, Kennedy uses a more Ordinary and slangy in several occasions. The ideal of the "melting pot" symbolizes the process of blending many strains into a single nationality, and we have come to realize in modern times that the "melting pot" need not mean the end of particular ethnic identities or traditions (Kennedy 27). • 8. Unauthorized Immigrants In 2008, I was only ten years old when my parents had finally become official U.S. citizens. Even though I did not understand the magnitude of the transition from being an immigrant to a United States citizen at the time, I could tell by how my family reacted when my parents passed that becoming a citizen was a big deal. Since my parents migrated to the United States as authorized immigrants, they were eligible to take the U.S. citizenship test after some years of residency, but if they were unauthorized immigrants, the likely scenario is that my parents would still be unauthorized today, possibly even deported out of the country, and that is the reality for millions of unauthorized immigrants in the United States, specifically an estimated eleven million unauthorized immigrants according to the United States Department of Homeland Security. With so many lives occupying the population of the U.S., it thus begs the question of whether unauthorized immigrants should be allowed in the process of becoming a citizen of the United States. Even though that question may seem answerable with a mere yes or no, the reality of the situation is that there have been millions of unauthorized immigrants residing in the United States for decades and that population has yet to stop growing, making any simple solution of granting citizenship to all or deportation to all impossible. Before the situation of unauthorized immigrants may be addressed, the definition of who an unauthorized ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Mexican Immigrants And Illegal Immigrants Essay Current Issues Many American citizens are responsible for illegal Mexican immigrants' determination to enter the United States because numerous American citizen's revenue money, drugs, and fame as a lifestyle which makes America the center of attraction for illegal immigrants to cross the border. It is clear that most Mexican immigrants transport an abundant amount of money payments and drugs across the U.S. border in return for more money so gangs and cartels can earn a recognized status through money and respect. Citizens of the U.S. have impacted and altered the American social economic status in a negative way. Most Mexican immigrants travel north in groups to cross the United States border to achieve their goal; live a better life so they can support themselves and their family. Although there are U.S. customs and border patrol agencies that have a duty to protect and secure the border from illegal aliens entering the U.S., some still successfully cross and enter the U.S. – Mexican border illegally. In the book The Devil's Highway, Urrea explains the "Rules of the Game" where illegal immigrants experience a traitorous journey depending on their guides. Their country and group leader fail to successfully support the group and citizens of Mexico. Both sides of the border (Mexico and America) should accept responsibility for illegal transportation of weapons. The act of illegal weapon trafficking is a major crime for the U.S. – Mexican border. People come here to work and bring their children, because there's more opportunities here and the country is known for being a free land. But they are being sent back to a place where they don't get the same things as they do here.Immigrants are also a big part of the U.S because most are in the fields, construction, landscaping, and all these jobs that are hard. Immigrants shouldn't be deported because they are here to work hard, to help out their families and also live the American dream like any other. The same article says families face painful decision wait many years to be a considerd for a visa or just cross the border with no documentation in order to be reunited with loved ones. • 11. Illegal Immigrants : Illegal Chinese Immigrants In the story of Forbidden Workers – Illegal Chinese Immigrants in New York, we are given a look at American Society from the perspective of an illegal immigrant who is taken advantage of because of their status and the vulnerable position that they are put in because of it. Peter Kwong provides a broad, but subjective, analysis of American life, labor laws, and other key points in immigration. However, while the message Kwong conveys with this interesting and informational work, it is hindered by his bias which comes out blatantly throughout, limiting the book that would have earned a recommendation for the American Psychological Association (ASA) award for the International Migration category, but instead deserving an honorable mention. Kwong focuses his work on illegal immigration as being more of a labor problem, as opposed to an immigration problem and is brought up by the author as early in our reading as the introduction (Kwong, p. 7, 3rd paragraph) as he admits – "... the problem of illegal immigration, including Chinese immigration, can only be understood in the context of the underlying supply–and–demand principle enshrined in traditional U.S. economics." This statement is a legitimate theory as to the possible cause of the discrimination and other difficulties faced by Chinese immigrants, however, it is also one of many shots at the U.S. in general as seen just three pages earlier (Kwong, p.4, 2nd para.) – "Even though America portrays itself as a country of ... Immigrant Discrimination Chinese Immigrant Discrimination in the United States In 1849, San Francisco gained popularity among immigrants, people who travel from a foreign country to permanently live in another country, because of the new job opportunities that would change their lives. Many eager Chinese people took this rare chance to travel to a new place in order to make money and improve their poor living conditions. With all of the immigrants coming in from Asia, especially China, the white Americans grew anxious leading the United States government to issue the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. • 13. What Is The American Dream Of Immigrant Immigrants The American dream is to build or get a house, family, or job. Immigrants came to this country long ago in order to chase this dream. The American dream is different for everyone because some people came here to avoid a financial crisis from wherever they hailed from. While others came here in order to provide and care for their family. Most people that are indigenous to America or are born in America have the dream of being rich and/or famous, while foreigners just want a little bit of money because of where they came from they couldn't get any. Some people even came over here illegally to avoid their financial crisis, especially immigrants from Mexico who cross the border illegally. For most immigrants the American dream is to make money or care for their families. Immigrants most of the time couldn't care or provide for their family so they would pay money so they could buy a boat to America. After they rode the boat to Ellis Island they would go to the doctor they had set up there and see if they were healthy. If you were, you could continue on, if not you were quarantined. • 14. Illegal Immigrants Most immigrants in the United States can either be part of the middle class or live in poverty. Based on the results from Ruark and Graham, low–skilled immigrants are more likely to live poverty and lack of health insurance. In their research, immigrants and their children made up about 32% of those who lives in America who does not have health insurance (Ruark and Graham "Immigration, Poverty and Low–Wage Earners") Without statistic data, one could easily draw out a conclusion: since immigrants cannot obtain a health insurance, they cannot go to the doctor whenever they're ill. Without proper treatment for critical diseases such as cancer, the immigrants would suffer more than they should have. Besides the lack of health insurance, there are numerous of cases of deportation of illegal immigrants. Luis H. Zayas and Mollie H. Bradlee's article "Exiling Children, Creating Orphans: When Immigration Policies Hurt Citizens" explores the impact of deportation on the immigrant's families and their children. • 15. An Illegal Mexican Immigrant Immigrants They slip into the San Diego rail yard furtively, preferably beneath the protective cover of darkness, jumping fences, eluding guards and dodging two hundred –ton locomotives in a perilous dash for the most elusive of prizes, a free ride to the north. According to Jose Flores, an illegal Mexican immigrant seeking work in the United States says, "To be truthful, I have no idea of precisely where this train goes, other than it takes us to el norte" (Griffin 363+). The fact that each night literally hundreds of men and women clamber over the barricade is testament to its ineffectiveness and to the irresistible pull of United States jobs "that on average pay eight times their equivalent in Mexico" (Griffin 363+ ). Javier Ortega, a 40–year–old auto body repairman from Guadalajara, says, "It doesn 't matter how many people, horses, bicycles, helicopters or planes they use.... People will go. It doesn 't matter if the fence is electric" (Griffin 363+). These people carry dreams with them in hopes for a better life. These people are willing to walk day and night through any desert and any river they come across to achieve the "American Dream." Illegal immigration between Mexico and the United States is a serious situation that needs to be solved. To better understand this situation, one must analyze the causes and effects and come up with a solution. More and more people are coming from Mexico and entering the United States illegally. The average American would not make enough money to support a family working for such low rates (Estrada). 25,000 people come across the U.S. border everyday illegally for a better life (Jawetz) . • 17. Immigrant Assimilation Many researchers have studied the immigrant assimilation in the recent years. America's ethnic groups have been expected to come together as one and into the mainstream of american society for decades. Immigrant assimilation is a complex process in which immigrants should not only fully integrate themselves to a new country but also lose aspects perhaps all their heritage too if necessary. Social scientists rely on a primary benchmark to assess immigrant assimilation which is socioeconomic status. A melting pot can be described as a metaphor which indicates a society where many different types of people blend in as one. Being an immigrant and assimilating to the American society is hard but immigrants should get use to the American society and if it's possible immigrants should accept to lose their heritage. The article posted may 1998 "Immigrants shunning idea of assimilation" William branigin argues that " like many others her neighborhood, where most of the residents are Mexican immigrants, the jacinto household mixes the old country with the new" immigrants shouldn't try to keep their heritage still while in america it can cause them to assimilate less to america or it can cause them to have a harder time to assimilate into the american country. Which in turn, accomplishing either one of these goals will provide a higher quality of life and a sense of importance for themselves and their family. However, Americans view the immigrants differently from what they are. Some Americans view the immigrants with different stereotypes such as being lazy system abusers, dangerous criminals, and job thieves, just to name a few. In actuality, immigrants are very disciplined, hard workers whom are also highly motivated opportunity chasers, where in these ways they should and need to be viewed by Americans. Immigrants are hard workers; however, the Americans are viewing the immigrants as lazy and as a burden to The United States when in actuality, research shows that, some immigrants come to The United States legally although they may not have papers to work legally when they first arrive. For many immigrants the process to get legal documentation to work is a long, tedious, and expensive process.
