Careful use of mise en scene
1.
2. The majority of our outdoor filming took place within a local
forest (The insinuated murder of Olivia's best friend) we used
this location to break up and show contrast between the indoor
scenes and domestic settings. The forest helps to build the
narrative as it creates an uneasy atmosphere as there is
limited vision which makes it suitable for jump scares; the
forest is often separated from the public which makes it difficult
to access help making the scene even more scary.
The trees also create a range of silhouettes and figures which
helps to create more tension.
Forest scenes are common within the horror genre and in
trailers such as 'Cabin in the woods' and 'GET OUT', and as a
group we wanted to try and included common elements in to
the trailer. For visual effects we add blood to the face of the
friend to connote a violent act that was carried out.
3. The domestic setting of a teen on her laptop ( a
common behaviour within youth culture) gives the
audience a false sense of security, as a home
suggest a normal place and painting and image of
cosy domesticity. Domestic locations such as
homes and bedrooms are commonly seen within
the horror genre. As the audience is familiar with a
bedroom setting makes it more scary when we
contrasted it with something more sinister such as
the under the bed scene , as the protagonist in
unaware of the figure that is lurking beneath as a
home is supposed to be protection of the outside
world.
4. As well as the domestic setting that were filmed indoor ,
we also filmed in a living room to present therapy
sessions. Our target audience preferred psychological
horror above all the sub-genres , so we wanted to
incorporate therapy sessions to show the element of
psychology. We had the protagonist Paige wearing a
bandage to suggest a different point in time (the present)
and the therapist wearing a shirt , tie , glasses and
notebook to show that he is a genuine therapy as well as
showing the couch which is often a piece of furniture in a
therapy room.
5. We show a contrast between the protagonist and antagonist
with the use of colour. The protagonist Oliva is seen wearing
the colour yellow throughout the trailer , the colour yellow has
connotations of joy , cheerfulness and warmth showing that she
is not character to be feared. However the antagonist is seen
wearing black gloves and a black hoodie, that have negative
connotations associated with evil and mystery ; the ideas linked
to the narrative of the antagonist Paige. This is linked to the
media theory of binary oppositions , the idea that if there is a
good character there must be an evil counterpart to show the
difference in their dispostion.
