2. NORMAN BATES CHARACTER ANALYSIS:
The character of Norman bates was inspired by Ed Gein (1957) Americas first
modern psycho –killer who also had a overbearing hyper-moralistic
mother.
Norman Bates the antagonist played by Anthony Perkins in Alfred Hitchcock’s
‘psycho’ (1960). He is presented as the typical boy next door who owns a
motel : Norman comes across as unassuming and shy as well eager to
please from the very outset as he makes Marion feel very welcome.
However there is something unsettling about his disposition along side his
love for taxidermy (preservation of animals) which seem to always been in
the shot during the parlour scene .
When we are first introduced to Norman bates we get see his perspective of the
world and some of his underlying personality traits that are our first
indication of his split personality such as his aggressive body language
towards Marion to establish dominance as well as to scare her. At the
beginning we are led to believe that Norman and his mother are two
separate beings as Norman talks as if he has to care for his mentally ill
mother.
As the plot developments we find out that Norman suffers from dissociative
identity disorder (DID) / alter ego. Norman has a split personality he is
both himself and his mother Mrs Bates. Norman shares his personality with
his mother a side that is filled with anger , hurt and betrayal resulting in
her/his need to hurt others such as Marion. By the end of the film He no
longer is Norman bates but has completely transformed in to his mother
Norma. A theory has suggested that the names distinguish the characters
Norman can be separated in to norm and man suggesting that Norman is
the likeable and normal character that he chooses to present to everyone
specifically Marion.
Psycho shows societies interest in the brain and though processes as well as
paving the way for screen violence . This was at a time when people had an
interest in psychological movies .
“It’s not like my mother is a maniac or
a raving thing. She just goes a little mad
sometimes. We all go a little mad
sometimes. Haven’t you?”
3. PENNYWISE CHARACTER ANALYSIS
Pennywise is a Horror character that challenges the notion that monsters
are no longer scary. Clowns had previously been viewed as comic
performers that provide joy and entertainment however as time has
gone on people view clowns differently ; they are feared by many
people. Clowns have been very popular in recent times such as people
dressing up as killer clowns and tormenting people so filmmakers
noticed this and used the human fear of the unknown and the fact
that they are unfamiliar to us due to their over exaggerated features.
IT (2017) directed by Andy Muschietti is a character based off of the 1986
Stephen king novel.
He looks like he belongs to the past (e.g. Victorian) due to his thrilled collar ,
puffy coat and pantaloons giving him a doll-like quality.
Pennywise also known as IT he is a an evil character who comes in varying
shapes and sizes (shapeshifting monster). His main purposes is to
murder children and he is able to achieve this is by being dressed as a
clown and he uses his image to lure children in.
His physical appearance, IT’S sinister smile and his eyes filled with malicious
intent paired along side his sinister voice is an embodiment of
childhood anxieties.
Pennywise feeds of children's emotions ; when children are most scared and
panicked he is the happiest .
