3. Introduction
o English for specific purpose has for about 30
years been a separate branch of English language
Teaching. It has developed its own approaches,
materials and methodology and is generally seen
as very active, even ‘feisty’ movement that has
had considerable influence over the more
general activities of TESOL and applied
linguistics.
o ESP has always seen itself as materials driven and
as a classroom based activity concerned with
practical outcomes.

4. ESP : Definition
o Robinson (1980) has defined it as the teaching of
English to the learner who have specific goals
and purposes. According to him, these goals
might be professional, academic, scientific etc.

5. What is ESP
o ESP in brief is the use of a particular variety of
English in a specific context of use and justified by
learner’s needs.
o ESP requires analyzing language that is required in
the area/ profession, conducting student’s needs
analysis, conducting interviews with subject matter
specialists in the area.
o ESP one can be more precise about learners need:
Their needs are defined by a learning or
occupational situation in which English plays a key
role.

7. Characteristic of ESP
• Absolute characteristic of ESP
o ESP is designed to meet the specific need of the
learner.
o ESP makes use of the underlying methodology
and activities of the discipline it serves.
o ESP is centered on the language (grammar, lexis,
register),skills, discourse and genres appropriate
to these activities.

8. • The variable characteristics :
o ESP may be related to or designed for specific
disciplines.
o ESP may use, in specific teaching situations, a different
methodology from that of general English.
o ESP is likely to be designed for adult learners, either at
a tertiary level institution or in a professional work
situation. It could however, be used for learners at
secondary school level.
o ESP is generally at secondary designed for
intermediate or advanced student.
o Most ESP courses assume basic knowledge of the
language system, but it can be used with beginners.

9. Need Analysis
o A ‘need’ can be defined as a condition or situation
in which something is required or wanted.
o Teachers should be aware of the requirement of
the students towards learning the language before
designing the curriculum.
o The term‘ needs analysis’ in general refers to the
activities that are enveloping in collecting info that
will serve as the basis for developing a curriculum
that will meet the needs of a particular group of
students.

10. • The concept of need in esp can be understood in
relation to:
a) Goal- oriented needs(target needs):
communication in the target situation.
b) Process oriented need (learning need): what the
learner needs to do in order to learn.

o Target Situation Analysis(TSA)
o Learning Situation Analysis(LSA)
o Present Situation analysis(PSA)

13. Conclusion
o English for specific purposes is not a different
variety of English in its nature. In the sense of
linguistic terminology ESP means, what
learner needs in target situation or what
he/she wants about his function of language
usage or what his/her needs are according to
his/her own views.
