 WHAT IS TOURISM?
• Tourism is one the world’s fastest growing sector. Tourism is
the travel for recreational (fun), leisure (rest), family or
business purposes, usually of a limited duration.
 WE CAN SAY,
Tourism is commonly associated with trans-
national travel but may also refer to travel to
another location within the same country.
Temporary short- term movement of people to
destination outside their resident places.
 WHO ARE TOURISTS?
The world tourism organisation defines tourists as people
“travelling to and staying in places outside their usual
environment for no more than one consecutive year for
leisure, business and other purposes”.
 THE ECONOMIC EFFECT OF TOURISM
The economic effects of tourism include improved
tax revenue and personal income, increased
standards of living, and more employment
opportunities. Sociocultural impacts are associated
with interactions between people with differing
cultural backgrounds, attitudes and behaviours, and
relationships to material goods.

TYPES OF TOURISM
1. Ecotourism
Ecotourism in India is a thriving industry owing to the fact that country has
managed to save its resplendent natural beauty.
2. Medical tourism
Medical tourism (also called medical travel, health tourism or global healthcare) is a term
used to describe the rapidly-growing practice of travelling across international borders to
seek healthcare services.
3. Cultural tourism
One can see the influence of various cultures in dance, music, festivities, architecture,
traditional customs, food, and languages . This richness in culture goes a long way in
projecting India as the ultimate cultural tourism destination given boost to tourism in culture in
India.
4. Wildlife tourism
India has a rich treasure of fauna and flora. In fact, it is not wrong to say that
India is the biological capital of the Earth. India is in the top list for wildlife
tourism in the world.
5.Religious tourism
since India is birth place of Indian -origin religions, namely Hinduism ,
Jainism , Buddhism , and Sikhism , their holiest sites and highest
concentration of religious sites pertaining to these religions are in India .
6. Sports tourism
Sports tourism means to travel for the sake of either viewing or participating
in sports event staying a part from their usual environment.
7. Geographical tourism
Falling south along the Indus river valley, the North becomes flatter and more
hospitable, widening into the fertile plains of Punjab to the west and the
Himalayan foothills of Uttar Pradesh and the Ganges river valley to the East.
8. Agro tourism
Agriculture is the main sector of Indian Economy. Around 65 per cent of the population is
directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. Out of total GDP around 13 per cent
comes from the agriculture sector.

 TAJ MAHAL
The TAJ MAHAL is an Islamic ivory-white marble mausoleum on the right
bank of the river Yamuna in the Indian city of Agra. It was commissioned in
1632 by Mughal emperor SHAHJAHAN (r. 1628–1658) to house the tomb of
his wife.

 THE HOLY CITY OF VARANASI
Varanasi is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world.
According to Hindu mythology, Varanasi was built by the god
Shiva. Because of this direct connection with Shiva, one of the
most important gods in Hinduism, Varanasi is considered one of
the holiest cities in Hinduism.
HARMANDIR SAHIB THE GOLDEN TEMPLE PF AMRITSAR
The Golden Temple (also known as the HARMANDIR Sahib or
the DARBAR Sahib is a GURDWARA located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab,
India. t is the preeminent spiritual site of Sikhism. The man-made pool on the
site of the temple was completed by the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das, in
1577.

THE GOLDEN CITY JAISALMER
JAISALMER nicknamed "The Golden city", is a city in the Indian state

ancient JAISALMER Fort. This fort contains a royal palace and several
ornate Jain temples.

 THE RED FORT OF NEW DELHI
Is a historic fort in Old Delhi, Delhi in India that served as the main residence of
the Mughal Emperors. Emperor Shah JAHAN commissioned construction of the Red Fort on
12 May 1638, when he decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. Originally red and
white, its design is credited to architect USTAD AHMAD LAHORI, who also constructed
the TAJ MAHAL.

 The Gateway of India
The Gateway of India is an arch-monument built in the early 20th century in the city of
Bombay (now Mumbai), India. The foundation stone was laid in March 1913 for a monument built
in the Indo-Islamic style, inspiring by elements of 16th-century Gujarati architecture. The final
design of the monument by architect George WITTET was sanctioned only in 1914, and
construction was completed in 1924. Which is 26 metres (85 feet) high.

According to world tourism organization estimated, India will
lead in South Asia with 8.9 million arrivals by 2020.
India is poised to emerged as the 2nd fastest growing (8.8%)
tourism economy in the world over 2005-2014 according to
the world travel and tourism.
India received 23.3 million foreign and domestic tourists in
2016.
About 10 million foreign tourists arrived in India in 2017
compared to 8.89 million in 2016, recording a growth of
12.49%.

Domestic tourism:-
Domestic tourism is tourism involving residents of one
country traveling only within that country.
Inbound tourism:-
Incoming tourism is also known as ‘inbound tourism’. Incoming
tourism means traveller's arriving in different countries from their
own.
Outbound tourism:-
Outbound tourism refers to residents to travel outside their
home country.
 THREATS DUE TO TOURISM
Terrorism incidents like 26/11,11/7 have an impact on the
psyche of the visiting tourists.
These incidents dramatically reduces the foreign tourist
arrivals in India.
Diseases in recent years such as dengue, chikungunya
and swine flu are causing the tourist to stay away from
visiting different part of the country.

6.8% contribution to GDP.
42nd position globally and 16th most visited country.
Domestic tourism contributes to 3/4th of the tourism economy with
6.97 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2013.

gift sales, exhibition spaces, and sales of media copyright.
Furthermore, foreign tourists bring diversity and cultural
enrichment to the hosting country.

Promotion and marketing to increase the visibility of Indian

In the year 2002, the Government of India announced a New Tourism
Policy.

Incredible India is the name of an international tourism campaign maintained
by the government of India since 2002, to promote tourism in India.
The incredible India title was officially branded and promoted since 2002.
The exclamation mark forms the ‘I’ of India.
CONCLUSION
 The main focus of celebrating India National Tourists day
is to educate people about the benefits of traveling and the
importance of tourism. India is a tourist's paradise and this
trade plays an important role in the economy of the country.
