Guided Notes: There is space for the students to write 6 things about Douglass’s life. I’m going to have them only write the events in bold (his birth, publication of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, the purchase of his freedom, and (from the next slide) his North Star newspaper, appointment as a US Marshall, and his death.
This slide is intended to give the students some context about how the Civil War impacts Doulass’s life and his involvement in the war. They do not need to write anything from this slide.
Coincides with the right hand side of the chart about Douglass’s life; again intended to give some context to what was going on in the States during his lifetime
I’m just going to have the students put what they think a slave narrative is in their own words. They will already be familiar with the concept from Equiano.
I’m going to have them write the four in bold (or some that we come up with as a class), which link well to Douglass’s work.
After finishing background notes, read Chapters 1-3 and discuss. There are reading comprehension questions available if you want them. That will probably take the rest of the period, but I attached the Curse of Ham activities to this powerpoint in case you have time to start them. If you don’t have time, those slides are included on the next powerpoint as well.
