1. FUGITIVE SLAVES
Running away to regain their freedom.
They escaped their masters to travel to a
place where slavery was illegal.
Many of the runaway slaves ran to the
northern states.
Bounty hunters were sent out to find any run
away slaves.
The underground railway was one way that
the slaves could to escape.
2. FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT
Declared that all fugitive slave were to be
returned to their masters.
The act was passed on September 18,1850
The act was repealed on June 28, 1864
The south agreed to have California enter
as a free state and the south got the fugitive
slave act.
3. FREDERICK BAILEY
Ran away when he was nineteen
He was captured and returned
Escaped 2 years later
He moved to Massachutes
Frederick was self educated and he
changed his name to Douglas after
escaping the first time. He joined an
antislavery society, became a successful
speaker and became editor if the North Star.
4. HARRIET JACOBS
Ran away when she was twenty seven
years old.
Harriet use the pen name Linda Brent. She
was self educated.
Wrote Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.
Her book was the first account about a
struggle for freedom by female slaves.
Became an a abolitionist speaker and
reformer
5. JOHN THOMPSON
There is little know about John he was not
as famous as Harriet and Frederick and the
little that is know about him comes from his
narrative.
He escaped to Philadelphia and feared that
he might be recaptured
He worked in the Whaling Industry
Contributed his story to the Massachusetts
abolitionists press.
