Comparison Between Claude Debussy And G.f
Debussy Versus Handel Claude Debussy and G.F. Handel are well known for long musical presence.
Although they have similarities within their pieces being studied, the various differences are present
more often. Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is a softer, springtime sound with the
flute as its main instrument. Handel's "The Trumpet Shall Sound" has a gospel feel with the soloist's
melismatic notes and the presence of the trumpet soloist. Through the comparison between rhythm,
harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, and word–music relationship, we will be able to see the
similarities and differences. Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" starts off soft, almost
eyrie sounding. The flutes presence is well known as it glides to its next note. The flute aspect
sounds as if the sun if rising across a meadow. At around 0:25 seconds, the flute sounds dissonant
with the other instruments making a somewhat clash. The flute rises and falls like a roller–coaster.
The instruments become louder at 1 minutes 30 seconds and grow faster and faster in pace at 1
minutes 40 seconds. The instruments even out to hear the flute playing in a more dominate role
again at 1 minutes 48 seconds. The music crescendos until is as soft that you hear nearly nothing.
The melodies come back in to play with the flute. At 3 minutes 10 seconds, the eyrie sounds creeps
back in with faster changes and buzzing, almost bee like. At 3 minutes 45 seconds, the violins play a
almost fairy like noise,

Drago Shelly Manne Analysis
Bassist Michael Bisio and trumpeter Kirk Knuffke, two relevant contributors for the improvised jazz
panorama, got together at Park West Studios in Brooklyn to shape the six tunes that would be
included in Row For William O. Bisio dedicates this album to William O. Smith (better known as
Bill Smith), a clarinetist, composer, and educator who occasionally recorded with Dave Brubeck
and had a hand in Shelly Manne's Concerto for Clarinet & Combo. The constructive duo opened
with one of the honoree's compositions entitled "Drago", which exposes the theme's melody in a
gorgeous unison and is designed with absorbing grooves and stimulating swinging sections. The
title track gets a classical chamber feeling during its four–minute introductory section,

Jazz Guitar Critique
On November 10, 2016, the jazz guitar ensemble at Palm Beach State College had their first concert
for the fall semester with a special performance by the 2:00 Jazz Sextet directed by Neil Bacher and
co–directors David Gibble and Stephen Scott. The Jazz Guitar Ensemble performed five pieces
including "Bittersweet," "On Green Dolphin Street," and "Bill's Bay" – Last two pieces very
different in style had allowed the audience to enjoy the variety sounds of jazz music.
"Bittersweet," arranged by Mundell Lowe was a very mellow piece with a bass guitar lead in a 2/3
measure. The ensemble played in a monophonic texture, and each player took turn as the lead
throughout the piece. The bass guitar played by Angel Leiser, led the ensemble to a great
performance of "Bittersweet". The piece lasted about four minutes. There was a short pause, and the
instructor took the opportunity to talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
David Gibble gave some insights about the piece to help the audience understand how it came
about. "Bill's Bay" started with a ¾ measure, guitar player 2 and player 3 played the same note who
led the ensemble, while the other players joined in one after the other with variations in tune. The
piece sounded a bit identical to the previous one with a different tune and measure, but it was very
inspiring sound that makes jazz music unique. "Stolen moments" was another great piece,
performed by the guitar ensemble. The bass guitar started the piece while the electric guitar featured
as the soloist, they took turns with a little bit of blues, each player showcased their skills as soloist.
The instructor, Neil Bacher, started the piece the snapping of fingers, and counting the 2/3 measure.
The delicate texture of instruments blended closely in a fair exchange of melody and continued
throughout the entire piece. The ensemble did an amazing job of accentuating the rhythm of the
piece. The piece lasted about 3

Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis
Watching Louis Armstrong's live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure,
especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and
his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods' entrance on
vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert.
As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each
song throughout the concert.
Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, "Sleepy Time Down South," before
formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the
tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the
opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion.
Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and
was named "Indiana." In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the
performer's immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from
beginning to end.
After "Indiana" was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante
"Black and Blue." Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a
piano level until Armstrong's trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The
song's

Personal Narrative: My Decision To Play The Trumpet
I was sitting in my dad's car while going to the store when he asked me if I wanted to join the band
in sixth grade. I thought to myself for a moment, but decided I wanted to. When I agreed, my dad
asked me what instrument I was interested in playing. Once again I thought for a moment and then I
made my decision to play the trumpet. Joining band has shaped me into the person I am today,
because I discovered something about myself that I probably would never have found, I made more
friends, and I can now play a few different instruments and read most music. When I joined band, I
was one of the two girls playing a brass instrument. I chose the trumpet, because it is the loud, proud
one. Little did I know, I had quite a talent for playing instruments. I (not to brag) was one of the best
players in the whole band. I started out kind of weak with my sound, but after a while it sounded
less staccatoed and exasperated and I had a loud, strong sound. By seventh grade, I was lead trumpet
of the 7 other guys. At first, I only knew two other people in the band. I was just that one quiet kid
in the back row. The whole band was made up of just brass players, since the woodwinds had
different practice days. By the end of my sixth grade year, I knew just about all the band members.
In my seventh grade year, we had the woodwinds join the band. The band was suddenly ... Show

day, I got home and immediately started practicing. After at least four hours, I could play the music
we were working on in class. I came to band the next day knowing how to play the French horn. Mr.
Belliston was completely astonished, and he kept calling me either magical, a unicorn, or the magic
French horn. He says he's never seen or met and never will, meet someone who can learn that

I Attended The University Symphony Orchestra Concert
I attended the University Symphony Orchestra Concert on Sep 30. Being my first ever symphony
orchestra concert, the excitement was at its peak. I learned about the concert before so that I could
understand a bit more about what is being played and the history of that piece. Reached UCA before
time so that I could find a seat for myself and glance through the program book. When I sat down,
there were already musicians on stage who were wearing formal black clothes, some of the
musicians started working on the passages they needed to polish up before the performance, with no
regard for what anyone else is practicing. With time, the hall started to fill up and just before start, I
could see that it's a full house. I didn't know that so many people love Symphony. I could see that
the number of string instrument were far more then brass or woodwind instrument. As I was
observing the musicians I saw my TA Courtney Pham on flutes. The conductor of this concert was
Wes Kenny, who came on stage with fourteen years of experience. And also featuring performance
by famous Caleb Hudson on trumpet. Beethoven 's Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 was the first piece
played by the orchestra. The piece was nine minute long. Concertmaster "Frangel Lopez Cesena"
comes out and sits in the first chair of the first violins. This music is all about a roman patrician
'Coriolan' who has been banished from his native city due to betrayal. He then returns with an army

Antonio Vivaldi : The Most Influential Italian Composer
The following program was chosen to provide a wide variety of trumpet literature ranging from
major masterworks as well as transcriptions that translate well to the trumpet. A historical time line
was also considered when selecting the following pieces. One of the objectives of this program was
to display a linear progression starting with the Baroque era that show how art music evolve up until
the 21th century. It also displays how the physical and musical demand change for the trumpet over
a long period of time.
Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in A Minor, RV 35644
Born in Venice in 1678, Antonio Vivaldi became a Catholic priest and a virtuoso violinist and was
known as the most influential Italian composer of his time. He was a prolific composer who wrote
more than 500 concertos, 230 of them for violin and the others for instruments ranging from cello,
bassoon, oboe and flute to viola d 'amore, recorder, and lute. He also wrote 46 operas and sacred
choral music, as well as 90 sonatas and numerous chamber music works. Due to his use of
programmatic material in some of his musical works, such as Four Seasons, he is seen today as a
pioneer in the development of programmatic music.
Vivaldi 's Violin Concerto in A Minor, RV 356, is a three–movement work that has become a staple
in the violin repertoire. The exact date of this composition is not known, but it was first published in
1711 as the sixth in a set of twelve solo string pieces. The collective title for these pieces

Graduation Speech
I was always particularly early getting to class, but today I was running a little late. I shifted my
backpack 's weight nervously from shoulder to shoulder as I hurriedly made my way down the fifth
grade hallway. I skipped into the class room with just enough time to take my seat as the teacher
began to take roll. The teacher managed to get the room quiet enough to tell us that we were
expecting a guest speaker that morning. "Perfect timing! Here he is now." As she finished telling us
his name he reached the doorway and knocked rhythmically on its frame. He waddled up to the
front of the room and introduced himself with the biggest smile on his face. "Hey guys I 'm Mr.
Womack!" He was a short fat man with patches of thin brown hair lining the sides of his head. "I am
the band director at the middle school, and I am here to talk to you guys about joining band!" I
perked up from my typical 'slid down in the bottom of my seat ' posture so I could pay more
attention to what he had to say. "Has anyone ever had a family member play a musical instrument?"
He looked around the room filled with wide eyed fifth graders squirming in their seats half listening.
I wanted to pipe up from my small blue desk to say I have, but I was so painfully shy it made that
action almost impossible to preform. After what seemed like forever he dismissed his question and
moved onto the next. "Would anyone be interested in playing an instrument in the middle school

The Trumpet Shall Sound
The Trumpet Shall Sound by George Frideric Handel and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by
Claude Debussy are both different but very well done pieces of music. The Trumpet Shall Sound
was composed in 1741 and is known to many people as the "trumpet aria" or oratorio because in the
piece there is a main trumpet with a singer. However in Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, there is
no singing or voices present as it is an all–instrumental piece that was written in 1894. With the time
period difference between both pieces, it is definitely shown how music changed from 1741 to 1894.
While both pieces were written and composed in different time periods, the genres of both are
different. The Trumpet Shall Sound's genre is simply classical music ... Show more content on

In the symphonic poem by Debussy, I mentioned that it sounds like a story is being told. After
listening to the song many times I can imagine a guy on a spring day walking through the woods
where he falls asleep into a deep dream, which would explain the dreamy emotion at the beginning
of the song. In his dream he goes through a scary situation that he has to get himself out of. This
resembles the crescendo or the climax of the dream at approximately three minutes, fifty–five
seconds. Then he eventually gets through the battle and wakes up from his horrible dream towards
the end of the song. At the end of the song the orchestra is more peaceful that it was during the
middle. However a classical music piece would differ from this. In Handel's classical music piece
there is not a storyline feeling to the way the orchestra or singer is playing. Although it resembles an
opera, it is not because it is neither dramatic nor there is any impersonations or speaking involved. I
personally feel that the way that the orchestra and singer are playing is to convince the listeners of
something by singing and playing in a very powerful

Personal Narrative Essay: The Trumpet
The Trumpet In fourth grade our class was taken to the gym to see the older kids playing
instruments. There were so many different instruments being played, the sounds they were making
with their instruments were awesome. It looked like it would be a lot of fun to play an instrument in
the band and I couldn't wait to get to try it. They let us pick our top three instruments we thought we
liked and let us see them closer up and try them out. The trumpet was the first and the only
instrument I tried because once I played it I realized it was the perfect fit. I picked this instrument

Playing the trumpet in the band taught me many lessons and helped influence me to become the
person I am today. I learned a lot about responsibility, how to do many things on my own, how to do
work on my own that would later be used with the entire group, and if I had my part done it would
make working with the entire group run more smoothly, this goes for starting with practicing my
trumpet, to doing my dot book for marching band now. I learned in order to improve I had to take
matters into my own hands and practice with this I learned that practice does not make perfect it
makes permanent so I should not strive to be perfect, because it will never happen, but I should just
work to get one day better. With the trumpet I have learned that I am important and I need to do my
part to make the whole great but as I do that I also have to think of everyone around me and how to
work with them to make the whole great. I have learned how to work with many different kinds of
people both alike and different, those I agree with and those I do not, those I have stuff in common
with and those who the only thing we have in common is band but we do not even play the same

History Of The Trumpet
The trumpet is a musical instrument classified under the brass family of instruments. Its history
dates back to at least the 15th century when people used horns, bones and wood to magnify their
voices. Today's trumpet however, is made of brass that can be lacquered with silver, nickel, gold,
and titanium. It possesses seven essential features: a mouthpiece, mouthpiece receiver, bell, valves,
leadpipe, tuning slides, and water key. The trumpet is considered the smallest member of its family,
yet it plays the highest pitches with a bright and vibrant sound depending on its register. There are
two to four trumpets in the orchestra playing both harmony and melody, and supporting the rhythm.
One characteristic of the trumpet that captivates my

The Trumpet Analysis
The Trumpet – various, trumpet A mixture of feelings is how I reacted to this particular recording.
First was confusion, as the album consisted of a selection of pieces, experts, and composers that I
have not heard of. This album also introduced many new trumpeters to my collection as well,
making it hard to hone in on specifics on the technique of playing for each. Ludwig Guttler,
however, did appear on many of the pieces and had an interesting sound. At first listen, I was struck
by the style of his tone and timbre. Ludwig sounded very in the throat, as in playing far back into his
mouth and pallet. The sound almost sounded a bit muffled at times. Guttler's range and tonguing
also struck me. His tonguing was very frontal in attack, something ... Show more content on

Names like Wynton Marsalis, Maurice André, Håkan Hardenberger, and Philip Smith appear on this
recording, but I wanted to expand my understanding and focused my efforts on the names less
known to myself. First, I liked the fullness of each note of the Haydn "Trumpet Concerto in Eb"
played by Adolf Herseth. Even on the fast passages, Herseth managed to stay full and into the
sound. This provided me with a different sound and texture than I normally hear for Haydn. I did
not necessarily like this sound and did not dismiss it as well, but I generally thought that the
constant fullness made the piece sound more forceful than it needed to be. Other interesting pieces
included Stravinsky's "L'Histoire Du Soldat", performed by Armando Ghitalla and Rafael Méndez's
selections as well. With Ghitalla, I was shocked by the shortness of his staccato notes, leaving just
enough room to still produce a good sound and doing so while in conjunction with super fast fingers
and moving passages. Not only did Méndez's selections sound very technical in the same aspects as
the Ghitalla selections, with short and fast notes, but also captivating culturally. The "Hora
Staccato", was played with great stylistic contrast to the normal classical pieces and seized a sense
of the Balkaian or Romanian culture it deserved. The "Czardás" also captured the Spanish and
Mexican spice of Mendez's homeland, which

How Musical Instruments Has Affected Society
Musical instruments have played many major roles in helping with the construction of many
societies around the world today. Many people do not realize what musical instruments have been
responsible for and how they have helped shape the world today. There have been many instruments
that have helped create and sculpt the world, but one instrument that I want to inform readers about
is the trumpet and where it came from, as well as how it has changed over many years. The point
that I am arguing is the fact that many people do not know where the trumpet has come from and
how it has affected society. The trumpet has been used for many years for many different uses that
many folks do not even know about or have even thought about. In ... Show more content on

It is very unfortunate that the youth of the world today do not know how little things such as where
the trumpet came from has affected society and possibly the way they live there own life.
Today the trumpet is used for making music in many different kinds of musical situations. It is used
in musicals with other instruments for theme music as well as dance music. The modern day trumpet
is also used in marching bands, concert bands, as well as jazz bands. My favorite setting where the
trumpet is used is brass choir, where only two trumpets are used along with a trombone, tuba, and
French horn. There are so many venues that the trumpet is used that many do not think about, such
as rock bands and even country bands. When most people think of the trumpet, they think of
marching bands or concert bands, but in reality the trumpet has a much wider variety that it is used
for in today's world than many think. According to Edward Tarr in his book titled, "The Trumpet,"
he explains that the use of an instrument called a "trumpa" was used and was locally referred to as a
"tubae." "As Richard was pausing in Sicily before setting out for Palestine, a new kind of instrument
– the trumpa – was demonstrated to him. Roger of Wendover (d. 1236) wrote about 'tubae called the
trumpae'. This instrument was mentioned for the first time around the year 1180 in

jazz concert review Essay
The first question I asked myself at the beginning of the quarter was how much do I actually know
about jazz? I have always characterized jazz music as a rhythmic and instrumental form of music.
My impression on the basis of the jazz has always been portrayed with the African–American race. I
think this was build up from the rhythm 'n' blues era and meaning according to the dictionary ("style
of music that was invented by African American musicians in the early part of the twentieth century
and has very strong rhythms and often involves improvisation"). But Louis Armstrong's famous
reply was "if you had to ask, you'll never know". Whatever else he meant, he was at least saying that

Botti Performance Review
On February 10, 2017, I attended Chris Botti's nearly sold out show at the Hilbert Circle Theater.
This was the most brilliant performance I have ever seen. While I was not familiar with Botti before
the show, I had been asked on a date by a guy from church who was a fan of his work. After having
dinner at Oceanaire, we arrived at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, where women were dressed from
casual attire with black pants to full length ball gowns with mink fur coats, while the men wore suits
or sports coats with dress pants. Our seats were located in the middle of the theatre on the edge of
the balcony in front of the stage. Botti created an intimate atmosphere as he related the show to a

Each member of Botti's band performed a cadenza near the end of the show. The other musicians in
Botti's band included Geoffrey Keezer on piano, Richie Goods on bass, Lee Pearson on drums and
Ben Butler on the electric guitar. Keezer played at the mezzopiano dynamic level. Botti played at
the piannissmo dynamic level in "The Look of Love" but in some of his other songs he would begin
in a soft piano and crescendo to a mezzo forte with some subito changes from mezzo piano to forte.
While there was contrast due to the nature of jazz, most of the harmonies were consonant and the
melodies were conjunct and pleasant to hear. There was never a moment in the performance where I
felt the need for tension to be resolved, it was generally smooth. Overall, the wind instruments
played included a bass clarinet, clarinets, an English horn, flutes, a piccolo, oboes, and bassoons.
Among the strings heard were violins, violas, cellos, a harp, and double basses. Besides the trumpet,
the concert included other brass instruments such as French horns, trombones, and a

Trumpet In The Old Trumpet
Introduction
The word trumpet in the Old Trumpet is translated from the Hebrew word Showphar (sho–far –
Strong's Number: 7782) and also from the word Chatsotsrah (Khats–o–tser–aw – Strong's Number:
2689)
Another word that implies the sounding of the trumpets is truw'ah (ter–oo–aw' – Strong's Number:
8643). It is an acclamation of joy or a battle–cry; especially clangor of trumpets, as an alarm, blow
(–ing) (of, the) (trumpets), joy, jubilee, loud noise, rejoicing, shout (–ing), (high, joyful) sound (–
ing).
In the New Testament, the word trumpet is translated from the Greek Word Salpigx (sal'– pinx –
Strong's Number: 4536) and is defined as trumpet or trump.
Showphar is horn, ram's horn and is usually made from the horn of a ram but sometimes ... Show

The third is the Teruah and consists of nine staccato notes blown in succession. It is a plea for mercy
and also a sound for alarm. A wave–like sound of alarm calling upon man to stand by the banner of
God. Teruah in Hebrew means not only a certain unique sound. It also connotes "to break", denoting
breaking something and/or causing damage. It is the note for bustling, speedy activity, the signal for
breaking up, for striking tents and breaking up camp. Within the Biblical texts, the word teruah has
wide and diverse applications. On the one hand, it is the term used to define a verbal shout (e.g., 1
Samuel 4:5) and in particular the high pitched, warbling battle cry that is still heard today in the
center East (e.g., Job 39:24, 25). It was also the sound associated with war and is often times
translated as the alarm in English translations. The underlying etymology of the word teruah in
relation to the shofar or the two silver trumpets of the priests appears to be its apparent mimicking
of the verbal shout of war. The teruah was also the call sounded by the two silver trumpets that
signaled the breaking of camp for the Israelites in the desert (e.g., Numbers 10:5) and the term used
for a rapid, oscillating cymbal pattern (e.g., Psalm 150:5). On the other extreme, teruah is also a
word for joy (e.g., Psalm 89:15 (89:26 JPS)) and even a joyous shout (e.g., Ezra

The Seven Trumpets Interpreted In The Bible
Trumpets mentioned in the Bible are interpreted as an announcement, a warning, or a way to praise
God. In the Old Testament, the shofar is predominantly mentioned and the silver trumpet as well.
The Feasts of the Trumpets announces that Jesus will return and a new life will come. Not only do
the seven trumpets reveal a signal, but they are prophecies that are preparing the followers of Jesus
and enter the Kingdom of God. The seven trumpets states that events will occur with each involving
its own purpose. God has his ways of making himself known, if these trumpets have a significant
meaning, it should make people aware of their actions and preparing themselves for the day of
judgment. In the Bible the first day of the seventh month happens ... Show more content on

As stated in the first two trumpets, is WWII triggered by this? The third trumpet has some type of
connection as the Chernobyl disaster as well (End of Time 2014). The fourth trumpet is linked to the
"new world order", when Ronald Reagan was President in 1989. The fifth trumpet is prophesized to
have a connection with the Gulf war and the Iraqi soldiers spilling over 800 oil wells around the
deserts of Kuwait (End of Time 2014). Suddam Hussein being their president which in Hebrew
means destroyer as stated in Rev 9:11, could this actually be coincidence or a prophecy? At the end,
God will come and judge those on Earth. I believe that some of these events have occurred and are
occurring today. Whether people believe in these prophecies or not, God makes himself known
though the trumpets. The Bible is revealing how this will end, God wants to save everyone. He
wants for people to follow the Word of God, but those who do not believe will end up suffering the
most. I believe that these revelations and the symbolism of the trumpets are a way for people to get
closer to God before it is too late. As Jesus told the disciples, "I have told you now before it
happens, so that when it does happen you will believe" (John

Essay about Latin jazz orchestra
If I were to use one word to describe the "Afro–Latin Jazz Orchestra" that word would be
astonishing. At first, hearing that I was required to attend a Jazz concert I was completely turned off.
I am very closed minded and automatically thought to myself that the kind of music would be
dreadful. That is not the case anymore. This genre of music is amusing and very pleasing to the ears.
The band members are some of the most talented musicians that I ever saw or heard.

They would then stand up and take a bow. The female member, Erica von Kleist, was very good at
the alto saxophone. I also liked Mario Rivera who played the tenor saxophone. The soloists' that
would perform during each song would stand when it was time for there solo. My favorite song of
the night was entitled "Wild Jungle". Before the song Arturo gave us a brief introduction on what to
expect. He mentioned a saxophone duo solo between Mario Rivera and one of his fellow band
members that he taught. Arturo referred to the solo as "the master vs. the apprentice." When the solo
began my jaw dropped. It was so fast and lovely to listen too. Both musicians went back and forth
playing. I could not tell who was a better saxophone player. Mario Rivera must have taught his
student really well because they were both remarkable. In this song there was also a bongo solo that
really caught my attention. The musician played so fast and kept a perfect beat.
Another song that I enjoyed was entitled "Humility". There was also some mild humor in the
introduction to this song. The trumpet soloist took off Mario Rivera's jacket and put it on creating
laughter when Arturo said it's a good look for him. I too found his outfit rather funny. He was
wearing leather pants, and chain wallet, and a nice button down shirt. He stood in the front of the

Thad Jones Summary
HISTORICAL AND REHEARSAL NOTES
This is one of Thad Jones' most iconic arrangements. Don't Git Sassy recalls the energetic, hand–
clapping tradition of a church camp meeting, and the energy level stays strong throughout. This new
edition of Thad's work is taken directly from the original ink parts Thad handed out to the band in
1967, and from Thad's original pencil score now housed in the Thad Jones Archive at William
Paterson University, where Thad served as Founding Director of Jazz Studies.
The key to this arrangement is its rhythmic style – a hard–driving shuffle. In a shuffle, a constant
snare pattern is in tandem with the ride cymbal, all with a very tight "skip beat" played close to each
upcoming downbeat. The sax and brass figures are tight, always playing their upbeats to lock in
with the ride cymbal/snare skip beat. A great description of this time concept comes from the
legendary Basie alumnus Frank Wess, who once said, "That accent is not on the upbeat of four, it's
just before one!"
As with many Thad Jones arrangements, a number of key stylistic elements are not printed on the
original chart. The rehearsal comments below are taken from recorded performances of the original
recording by the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Orchestra, and from more recent Vanguard Jazz Orchestra
recordings. This arrangement can be performed at the deepest level when band members are hearing
these great recordings in their minds as they play.

Cichowicz, Stamp, And Adam Pedagogies
Even though the Cichowicz, Stamp, and Adam pedagogies come with disadvantages, they do come
with many benefits. Each pedagogy takes a different path to the same goal, a high level of trumpet
playing, which is why they don't have to contradict one another. When studying the trumpet or
teaching a student, combining the three methods can be beneficial. The three methods take different
polarizing sides, occasionally refusing to accept the benefits from the others. Since all three methods
lead to the same destination, their benefits do complement each other. Cichowicz's method
emphasizes the importance of the musical line. This complements Adam's method, emphasizing the
sound. To both, everything is goal–oriented.1 The goal of the musical line ... Show more content on

When teaching students one of these methods, teachers should incorporate the other two methods.
One example is the Adam method with the incorporation of mouthpiece buzzing and the expansion
of the sound to musical phrases can help aid students on their journey. A second example is with the
Stamp method, the incorporation of more musical and sound based explanations can also help aid
students on their journey. All three methods lead to the same destination, but they can be merged
together in certain areas giving students a higher quality education in their journey to becoming

Brass Instruments: Classical Vs. Big Band
Every brass instruments have mouthpieces, however there are different types and sizes of these
which give different sounds. The mouthpiece is there to help your upper and lower lips vibrate when
air passes between them. The different sizes of mouthpieces have their advantages and
disadvantages, beginner students should use the mouthpiece that comes with the trumpet until their
development changes.
There are different mouthpiece rims and they all have different sounds to them. A wide rim gives an
increase of endurance. A narrow rim improves your flexibilty, a round one improves comfort and a
sharp rim increases your precision and attack.
The mouthpiece cup also have different sizes and therefore makes the trumpet sound different.

The timbres between Classical and Big Band are completely different. There is an assortment of
mutes used in Big Band which are hardly ever featured in classical pieces. The playing styles
between the two are different. Classical brass players use minute or no vibrato and tend to produce
less bold growls, screams and wails which Big Band players play with ease. Quite often the brass
section plays similar phrases and rhythms for a dominant, brassy sound. "These instruments can also
make use of sound–changing mutes, which are widely used in jazz." –

players in Big bands. If the section is playing in unison the first trumpet (lead player) is then
followed in volume, articulation, and phrasing by the rest of the section. The second trumpet is

Trumpet Music Research Paper
There are some basics techniques that must be learned in order to learn how to play the trumpet.
However, as with most arts, it's not always as easy as it seems. Most people figure that simply
stated, if they want to play the trumpet they have to learn two things: how to make a sound and how
to play different notes. That's true, but that first one is a biggie. Being able to play notes on a
trumpet is very different than playing musically, with an enjoyable sound. There's knowing how to
play the trumpet, and then there's really knowing how to play the trumpet. It's that quality of the
sound that trumpet players strive to improve and maintain, even after years of playing.
The basic sound of the trumpet is produced by vibrating the lips to make a buzzing sound. Other
articles discuss making a good buzz, but here we'll look at how to really support that sound once a
buzz is established. Three pointers that support trumpet players over their entire trumpet career are:
Keep the corners of the embouchure firm – this is the area that helps control your sound, your tone
& your pitch. Take a deep breath – stand up straight or sit up straight, breathe deeply starting from
way down in you abdomen. – A deep breath supports your tone and range Blow all the way through

suit that should be illegal. It's not enough alone to make you a great performer, but it gives you a
solid base to grow from, and supports you rather than holds you back. Learning these fundamental
ideas here at the very beginning will make everything come much easier as you progress. So let's

The Importance Of Being A Successful Work Of A Trumpet Player
Anxiety, endurance, knowledge, Focus, Preparation
As a trumpeter a successful musical performance experience is the ultimate goal. We spend
countless hours trying to prefect our craft that at times can feel like a futile endeavor. In our
preparation for the perfect performance at times we forget to address our greatest impediments that

Walt gapes at the instrument. The horn blazes under the spotlights. Walt spills the rest of his ice

must be molten brass. Three people serve drinks. They lean over the polished wood; they nod
consent. They mix liquors and liquor?s accoutrements, they shout prices, they run credit cards and
stuff tips into a big jar by the registers. One of the bartenders is a brawny, scowling man. He works
hard at his body and wears tight black shirts to prove the way his muscles knit together when he
makes his circuit from the bar to the register and to the wall of bottles with their mirrored backing.
He likes to lean forward and flex for women when he sets down their aviations, their gimlets, any
cocktail housed in that delicate, long–stemmed glasses. He knows Walt. He has kicked Walt out of
the bar before, and done it roughly. The bartender crushes a wedge of lime into a drink with thumb

Trumpet History Essay
The trumpet is an important component of the brass family, however it is in a catorgory called
aerophones. The definition of aerophone is a wind instrument. The trumpet dates as far back as 1500
B.C. and was primitively utilized as a military signals and civilian signals as warnings
(Encyclopaedia Britannica). Trumpets played a preeminent role in numerous countries throughout
history. Nearly everyone has in one way or another observed an individual blowing into a sea shell
or an animal horn. This in my point of view was the evolution of the trumpet. At one time, trumpets
were constructed out of silver or bronze and practically all trumpets were valueless. For instances,
trumpets were restricted in the notes that were playable on them, due to the fact they did not have ...

Consequently, Heinrich Stoelzel and Friedrich Bluhme would create the box tubular trumpet, in
1818. In 1839, François Perinet would make improvements to Stoelzel's and Bluhme's trumpet.
Perinet would invent the piston valued trumpet. This would develop into the modern trumpet of
today (Trumpet). Today's trumpets are predominately manufactured out of brass, however there are
other materials which include steel, cork, monel (a metal alloy), felt, and mother of pearl. Presently,
trumpets are constructed with machinery. Unlike in the past, when they were constructed by hand.
They have six components, which are a mouthpiece, lead pipe, slides, values, value block, and the
bell. Even though, trumpets are manufactured by machinery, nearly all bells are still hand–made

Natural Trumpet History
The natural trumpet was very different in comparison to the trumpet we have and think of today.
The modern trumpet is made mostly of brass and copper, three valves, and a four slides. Modern
trumpets are used for many purposes including ensemble and solo playing. Early natural trumpets
were short straight instruments made of wood or metal which were used for both militaristic and
ceremonial purposes. The natural trumpet had no holes or valves for altering pitches, while the
trumpet today has three valves for altering the pitches. The pitches on the natural trumpet were
altered by the performer adjusting his or her embouchure and the speed of the air being used; while
this concept is used while playing the modern trumpet, we have valves to assist ... Show more

One of the more interesting developments that has happened recently is the introduction of the
pTrumpet, or plastic trumpet. The pTrumpet is, as the name suggests, a trumpet that is made entirely
out of plastic. The entirety of the instrument is made of plastic, including the valves. It is incredible
seeing how far the trumpet has come and how much changed from the natural trumpet to the
modern trumpet, from no valves to three valves. The development of the trumpet was no doubt
attributed to the demands and the music that composers composed over time. As time goes on, the
trumpet has and will continue to develop as the demands and needs of composers continue to

from the trumpet. The trumpet was very wild and had many different ranges. The melody was the
same throughout the song aside from the trumpet as well. There was a steady flow throughout the
whole song. The dynamic of the song was very calm and quiet aside from the trumpet. I didn't
appreciate that because it was so distracting. The tempo was at a mild pace. Not all the instruments
were played during this song. It was only 2 instruments played at a time during the whole time. The
next song on the playlist was called "Everything Happens To Me". The texture to this was very soft
as well. The instruments were playing off each other but it was still a freestyle type of song. I think
jazz is generally played like freestyle. There was no melody to this song. The rhythm was not
existent as well. It was more of a free flowing song. This song had a very quiet dynamic. It sounded
very romantic like something out of a movie. The tempo of the song was very slow and mild but the
trumpet was going very fast. The cello and the drums had a portion of the song where they fed off

Experiencing the Trumpet Essay
He who is a true trumpeter ... can both sound across a great distance out in the open air, and also
moderate with a pleasing voice in the princely chamber when the occasion arises'
–The Gentleman's Journal of January 1692
The trumpet is an aerophone, and it produces sound by passing a airstream "through the player's
vibrating lips, so gaining intermittent access to the air column which is to be made to vibrate" (14,
par. 1). Present–day trumpets are made of brass, and can play a very wide range of registers through
the use of the instrument's valves or the musician's 'lipping' technique to modulate the pitch of the
trumpet. According to Bo Lawergren, the trumpet was originally used to mask and intensify the
human voice (42). However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The ancestor to the modern trumpet is the Roman tuba, a long metal trumpet with a wide 'J'–shaped
end. The Roman tube was played with a bone mouthpiece, and was used for military signalling (14,
par. 8).
Despite the atrocities committed during the third crusade from 1189–1192, useful methods of artistic
metalworking were reverse–engineered from Muslim prototypes. These methods, along with the
recent discovery of many copper and silver mines in Germany, and "development of water–powered
rolling mills and forge hammers" (13, 350) allowed the construction of high quality brass and silver
trumpets which produced their familiar "loud and bright sonority" (13, 350).
The buisine, sometimes called the herald's trumpet, was created using the new metalworking
technologies described above. The buisine was a straight trumpet at 150cm in length with a belled
flare at the end (7, 26). Peter Downey explains that in it's early life, the buisine was used for
signaling military commands. Downey states that the buisine was not seen in a music performance
until the Ars Nova period when it "began to find a place in the performance of dance music at the
courts" (26). In this setting, the buisine would usually provide accompaniment as a bass drone for a
shawm, or the

Undeterred: A Concert Report
Each time I set my embouchure on my mouthpiece, I create a mass–spring system with my lips.
They oscillate, providing an air current. As my lips transition through a series of motions and
contort to control the tension, I scale through a large range of pitches. I produce multiple series of
resonance as my trombone resonates, each one creating a different standing wave from the last. I
change the frequency of the vibration of my lips, increasing it in order to reach a higher note. I try to
sneak in a G above the staff at pianissimo, but clip. Undeterred, I attempt to play a little louder,
providing a velocity of air sufficient enough to allow me to reach it. I masterfully move the slide,
manipulating the complex closed pipe so that it will resonate at the frequencies I desire. I make sure
to achieve a mix of accuracy and speed in order to play the music at the tempo I want and also be in
harmony with the rest of the band. Each note has a deliberate and careful style, crafted to share the
emotion I feel with the audience. Having played the trombone for eight years, I have always had a

Dizzy Gelespie (John Birks Gillespie) Essay
The people of today, raised by the sounds of The Beatles and Pearl Jam have forgotten all about the
musicians that paved the way for these artists, and the musical styles that evolved into rock and roll,
rhythm and blues and rap or hip hop. Unfortunately the music that once dominated the night clubs,
restaurants, and radio stations is now heard only in elevators or when we go to a grandparents house
to visit. What is left of jazz are small portions of the music that people take and sample with in a

Gillespie admired the style and work of Roy Elridge so much that he started to sound like Elridge.
Some time later Gillespie was hired in a band because he played with Elridge=s style so well. In his
studies he would transcribe or learn the notes and phrases that Elridge would play during his solos
(Powis, 58). Although to become a Jazz musician, Gilllespie did not idolize only jazz musicians, he
also greatly enjoyed listening to and examining the styles of musicians like Stravinsky, a virtuoso
composer of the classic period, and Maurice Ravel another composer, famous for works like
"Bolero", a piece that consisted of a phrase that repeated over and over, each time
getting louder and thicker (Powis, 58).
Dizzy unfortunately was to be later recognized by many for his many distinguishable trademarks
instead of the musical proficiency he worked so hard for. He was famous for his sense of humor. At
a performance Dizzy asked the audience if he could introduce the band. The audience replied
swiftly "yes". He than began introducing the saxophone player to the drummer and the
trumpet player to the trombonist and so forth (Wastrous, January 17). He also expressed his
incredible humor within his music as well. In his own interpretation of the spiritual, "Swing

Compare And Contrast Bb And C Trumpets

that make it useful in different contexts. The C trumpet has a bright and penetrating sound, while the

but all professional trumpet players play the C trumpet as well. Changing between instruments
poses nominal problems since the basic finger combinations stay the same.

Comparison Between Claude Debussy And G.F

  • 1. Comparison Between Claude Debussy And G.f Debussy Versus Handel Claude Debussy and G.F. Handel are well known for long musical presence. Although they have similarities within their pieces being studied, the various differences are present more often. Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" is a softer, springtime sound with the flute as its main instrument. Handel's "The Trumpet Shall Sound" has a gospel feel with the soloist's melismatic notes and the presence of the trumpet soloist. Through the comparison between rhythm, harmony, timbre, dynamics, form, and word–music relationship, we will be able to see the similarities and differences. Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" starts off soft, almost eyrie sounding. The flutes presence is well known as it glides to its next note. The flute aspect sounds as if the sun if rising across a meadow. At around 0:25 seconds, the flute sounds dissonant with the other instruments making a somewhat clash. The flute rises and falls like a roller–coaster. The instruments become louder at 1 minutes 30 seconds and grow faster and faster in pace at 1 minutes 40 seconds. The instruments even out to hear the flute playing in a more dominate role again at 1 minutes 48 seconds. The music crescendos until is as soft that you hear nearly nothing. The melodies come back in to play with the flute. At 3 minutes 10 seconds, the eyrie sounds creeps back in with faster changes and buzzing, almost bee like. At 3 minutes 45 seconds, the violins play a almost fairy like noise, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Drago Shelly Manne Analysis Bassist Michael Bisio and trumpeter Kirk Knuffke, two relevant contributors for the improvised jazz panorama, got together at Park West Studios in Brooklyn to shape the six tunes that would be included in Row For William O. Bisio dedicates this album to William O. Smith (better known as Bill Smith), a clarinetist, composer, and educator who occasionally recorded with Dave Brubeck and had a hand in Shelly Manne's Concerto for Clarinet & Combo. The constructive duo opened with one of the honoree's compositions entitled "Drago", which exposes the theme's melody in a gorgeous unison and is designed with absorbing grooves and stimulating swinging sections. The title track gets a classical chamber feeling during its four–minute introductory section, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Jazz Guitar Critique On November 10, 2016, the jazz guitar ensemble at Palm Beach State College had their first concert for the fall semester with a special performance by the 2:00 Jazz Sextet directed by Neil Bacher and co–directors David Gibble and Stephen Scott. The Jazz Guitar Ensemble performed five pieces including "Bittersweet," "On Green Dolphin Street," and "Bill's Bay" – Last two pieces very different in style had allowed the audience to enjoy the variety sounds of jazz music. "Bittersweet," arranged by Mundell Lowe was a very mellow piece with a bass guitar lead in a 2/3 measure. The ensemble played in a monophonic texture, and each player took turn as the lead throughout the piece. The bass guitar played by Angel Leiser, led the ensemble to a great performance of "Bittersweet". The piece lasted about four minutes. There was a short pause, and the instructor took the opportunity to talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... David Gibble gave some insights about the piece to help the audience understand how it came about. "Bill's Bay" started with a ¾ measure, guitar player 2 and player 3 played the same note who led the ensemble, while the other players joined in one after the other with variations in tune. The piece sounded a bit identical to the previous one with a different tune and measure, but it was very inspiring sound that makes jazz music unique. "Stolen moments" was another great piece, performed by the guitar ensemble. The bass guitar started the piece while the electric guitar featured as the soloist, they took turns with a little bit of blues, each player showcased their skills as soloist. The instructor, Neil Bacher, started the piece the snapping of fingers, and counting the 2/3 measure. The delicate texture of instruments blended closely in a fair exchange of melody and continued throughout the entire piece. The ensemble did an amazing job of accentuating the rhythm of the piece. The piece lasted about 3 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Louis Armstrong Concert Analysis Watching Louis Armstrong's live performance in Berlin during the year 1965 was a pleasure, especially because I am a great fan of his music. Throughout the concert in Berlin, Armstrong and his chamber orchestra played 13 different pieces. With the exception of Jewel Woods' entrance on vocals for two songs, the makeup of the chamber orchestra did not change throughout the concert. As a result, the cello, clarinet, drums, piano, trombone, and trumpet remained vital parts of each song throughout the concert. Armstrong and his All Stars quickly began their first song, "Sleepy Time Down South," before formally introducing themselves. This song allowed the audience to prepare for the concert as the tempo was consistently adagio. The song also gave each instrument in the chamber orchestra the opportunity to each warm up with a song that was completely dolce and legato in fashion. Next, the chamber orchestra quickly transitioned to a vivace song that was performed con fuoco and was named "Indiana." In this song, every instrument was given an uptempo solo to showcase the performer's immense talent. The dynamic throughout was forte in fashion and did not vary from beginning to end. After "Indiana" was performed, the chamber orchestra transitioned to a more dolce and pesante "Black and Blue." Throughout this song, each performer played softly, keeping the dynamic at a piano level until Armstrong's trumpet began to raise the dynamic to a more mezzo piano level. The song's ... • 5. Personal Narrative: My Decision To Play The Trumpet I was sitting in my dad's car while going to the store when he asked me if I wanted to join the band in sixth grade. I thought to myself for a moment, but decided I wanted to. When I agreed, my dad asked me what instrument I was interested in playing. Once again I thought for a moment and then I made my decision to play the trumpet. Joining band has shaped me into the person I am today, because I discovered something about myself that I probably would never have found, I made more friends, and I can now play a few different instruments and read most music. When I joined band, I was one of the two girls playing a brass instrument. I chose the trumpet, because it is the loud, proud one. Little did I know, I had quite a talent for playing instruments. I (not to brag) was one of the best players in the whole band. I started out kind of weak with my sound, but after a while it sounded less staccatoed and exasperated and I had a loud, strong sound. By seventh grade, I was lead trumpet of the 7 other guys. At first, I only knew two other people in the band. I was just that one quiet kid in the back row. The whole band was made up of just brass players, since the woodwinds had different practice days. By the end of my sixth grade year, I knew just about all the band members. In my seventh grade year, we had the woodwinds join the band. The band was suddenly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My band director, Mr. Belliston, said I could bring the horn to my house so I could practice. That day, I got home and immediately started practicing. After at least four hours, I could play the music we were working on in class. I came to band the next day knowing how to play the French horn. Mr. Belliston was completely astonished, and he kept calling me either magical, a unicorn, or the magic French horn. He says he's never seen or met and never will, meet someone who can learn that complicated instrument that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. I Attended The University Symphony Orchestra Concert I attended the University Symphony Orchestra Concert on Sep 30. Being my first ever symphony orchestra concert, the excitement was at its peak. I learned about the concert before so that I could understand a bit more about what is being played and the history of that piece. Reached UCA before time so that I could find a seat for myself and glance through the program book. When I sat down, there were already musicians on stage who were wearing formal black clothes, some of the musicians started working on the passages they needed to polish up before the performance, with no regard for what anyone else is practicing. With time, the hall started to fill up and just before start, I could see that it's a full house. I didn't know that so many people love Symphony. I could see that the number of string instrument were far more then brass or woodwind instrument. As I was observing the musicians I saw my TA Courtney Pham on flutes. The conductor of this concert was Wes Kenny, who came on stage with fourteen years of experience. And also featuring performance by famous Caleb Hudson on trumpet. Beethoven 's Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 was the first piece played by the orchestra. The piece was nine minute long. Concertmaster "Frangel Lopez Cesena" comes out and sits in the first chair of the first violins. This music is all about a roman patrician 'Coriolan' who has been banished from his native city due to betrayal. He then returns with an army for revenge but stops when he sees his ... • 7. Antonio Vivaldi : The Most Influential Italian Composer The following program was chosen to provide a wide variety of trumpet literature ranging from major masterworks as well as transcriptions that translate well to the trumpet. A historical time line was also considered when selecting the following pieces. One of the objectives of this program was to display a linear progression starting with the Baroque era that show how art music evolve up until the 21th century. It also displays how the physical and musical demand change for the trumpet over a long period of time. Antonio Vivaldi: Concerto in A Minor, RV 35644 Born in Venice in 1678, Antonio Vivaldi became a Catholic priest and a virtuoso violinist and was known as the most influential Italian composer of his time. He was a prolific composer who wrote more than 500 concertos, 230 of them for violin and the others for instruments ranging from cello, bassoon, oboe and flute to viola d 'amore, recorder, and lute. He also wrote 46 operas and sacred choral music, as well as 90 sonatas and numerous chamber music works. Due to his use of programmatic material in some of his musical works, such as Four Seasons, he is seen today as a pioneer in the development of programmatic music. Vivaldi 's Violin Concerto in A Minor, RV 356, is a three–movement work that has become a staple in the violin repertoire. The exact date of this composition is not known, but it was first published in 1711 as the sixth in a set of twelve solo string pieces. The collective title for these pieces ... • 8. Graduation Speech I was always particularly early getting to class, but today I was running a little late. I shifted my backpack 's weight nervously from shoulder to shoulder as I hurriedly made my way down the fifth grade hallway. I skipped into the class room with just enough time to take my seat as the teacher began to take roll. The teacher managed to get the room quiet enough to tell us that we were expecting a guest speaker that morning. "Perfect timing! Here he is now." As she finished telling us his name he reached the doorway and knocked rhythmically on its frame. He waddled up to the front of the room and introduced himself with the biggest smile on his face. "Hey guys I 'm Mr. Womack!" He was a short fat man with patches of thin brown hair lining the sides of his head. "I am the band director at the middle school, and I am here to talk to you guys about joining band!" I perked up from my typical 'slid down in the bottom of my seat ' posture so I could pay more attention to what he had to say. "Has anyone ever had a family member play a musical instrument?" He looked around the room filled with wide eyed fifth graders squirming in their seats half listening. I wanted to pipe up from my small blue desk to say I have, but I was so painfully shy it made that action almost impossible to preform. After what seemed like forever he dismissed his question and moved onto the next. "Would anyone be interested in playing an instrument in the middle school band?" Almost instantly every hand in ... • 9. The Trumpet Shall Sound The Trumpet Shall Sound by George Frideric Handel and Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun by Claude Debussy are both different but very well done pieces of music. The Trumpet Shall Sound was composed in 1741 and is known to many people as the "trumpet aria" or oratorio because in the piece there is a main trumpet with a singer. However in Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, there is no singing or voices present as it is an all–instrumental piece that was written in 1894. With the time period difference between both pieces, it is definitely shown how music changed from 1741 to 1894. While both pieces were written and composed in different time periods, the genres of both are different. The Trumpet Shall Sound's genre is simply classical music ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the symphonic poem by Debussy, I mentioned that it sounds like a story is being told. After listening to the song many times I can imagine a guy on a spring day walking through the woods where he falls asleep into a deep dream, which would explain the dreamy emotion at the beginning of the song. In his dream he goes through a scary situation that he has to get himself out of. This resembles the crescendo or the climax of the dream at approximately three minutes, fifty–five seconds. Then he eventually gets through the battle and wakes up from his horrible dream towards the end of the song. At the end of the song the orchestra is more peaceful that it was during the middle. However a classical music piece would differ from this. In Handel's classical music piece there is not a storyline feeling to the way the orchestra or singer is playing. Although it resembles an opera, it is not because it is neither dramatic nor there is any impersonations or speaking involved. I personally feel that the way that the orchestra and singer are playing is to convince the listeners of something by singing and playing in a very powerful ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Personal Narrative Essay: The Trumpet The Trumpet In fourth grade our class was taken to the gym to see the older kids playing instruments. There were so many different instruments being played, the sounds they were making with their instruments were awesome. It looked like it would be a lot of fun to play an instrument in the band and I couldn't wait to get to try it. They let us pick our top three instruments we thought we liked and let us see them closer up and try them out. The trumpet was the first and the only instrument I tried because once I played it I realized it was the perfect fit. I picked this instrument even though most of my other friends had picked different instruments; like the clarinet, the flute, and the several instruments that are part of the percussion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Playing the trumpet in the band taught me many lessons and helped influence me to become the person I am today. I learned a lot about responsibility, how to do many things on my own, how to do work on my own that would later be used with the entire group, and if I had my part done it would make working with the entire group run more smoothly, this goes for starting with practicing my trumpet, to doing my dot book for marching band now. I learned in order to improve I had to take matters into my own hands and practice with this I learned that practice does not make perfect it makes permanent so I should not strive to be perfect, because it will never happen, but I should just work to get one day better. With the trumpet I have learned that I am important and I need to do my part to make the whole great but as I do that I also have to think of everyone around me and how to work with them to make the whole great. I have learned how to work with many different kinds of people both alike and different, those I agree with and those I do not, those I have stuff in common with and those who the only thing we have in common is band but we do not even play the same ... • 11. History Of The Trumpet The trumpet is a musical instrument classified under the brass family of instruments. Its history dates back to at least the 15th century when people used horns, bones and wood to magnify their voices. Today's trumpet however, is made of brass that can be lacquered with silver, nickel, gold, and titanium. It possesses seven essential features: a mouthpiece, mouthpiece receiver, bell, valves, leadpipe, tuning slides, and water key. The trumpet is considered the smallest member of its family, yet it plays the highest pitches with a bright and vibrant sound depending on its register. First was confusion, as the album consisted of a selection of pieces, experts, and composers that I have not heard of. This album also introduced many new trumpeters to my collection as well, making it hard to hone in on specifics on the technique of playing for each. Ludwig Guttler, however, did appear on many of the pieces and had an interesting sound. At first listen, I was struck by the style of his tone and timbre. Ludwig sounded very in the throat, as in playing far back into his mouth and pallet. The sound almost sounded a bit muffled at times. Guttler's range and tonguing also struck me. Names like Wynton Marsalis, Maurice André, Håkan Hardenberger, and Philip Smith appear on this recording, but I wanted to expand my understanding and focused my efforts on the names less known to myself. First, I liked the fullness of each note of the Haydn "Trumpet Concerto in Eb" played by Adolf Herseth. Even on the fast passages, Herseth managed to stay full and into the sound. This provided me with a different sound and texture than I normally hear for Haydn. I did not necessarily like this sound and did not dismiss it as well, but I generally thought that the constant fullness made the piece sound more forceful than it needed to be. Other interesting pieces included Stravinsky's "L'Histoire Du Soldat", performed by Armando Ghitalla and Rafael Méndez's selections as well. With Ghitalla, I was shocked by the shortness of his staccato notes, leaving just enough room to still produce a good sound and doing so while in conjunction with super fast fingers and moving passages. Not only did Méndez's selections sound very technical in the same aspects as the Ghitalla selections, with short and fast notes, but also captivating culturally. The "Hora Staccato", was played with great stylistic contrast to the normal classical pieces and seized a sense of the Balkaian or Romanian culture it deserved. The "Czardás" also captured the Spanish and Mexican spice of Mendez's homeland, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It is very unfortunate that the youth of the world today do not know how little things such as where the trumpet came from has affected society and possibly the way they live there own life. Today the trumpet is used for making music in many different kinds of musical situations. It is used in musicals with other instruments for theme music as well as dance music. The modern day trumpet is also used in marching bands, concert bands, as well as jazz bands. My favorite setting where the trumpet is used is brass choir, where only two trumpets are used along with a trombone, tuba, and French horn. There are so many venues that the trumpet is used that many do not think about, such as rock bands and even country bands. When most people think of the trumpet, they think of marching bands or concert bands, but in reality the trumpet has a much wider variety that it is used for in today's world than many think. According to Edward Tarr in his book titled, "The Trumpet," he explains that the use of an instrument called a "trumpa" was used and was locally referred to as a "tubae." "As Richard was pausing in Sicily before setting out for Palestine, a new kind of instrument – the trumpa – was demonstrated to him. I have always characterized jazz music as a rhythmic and instrumental form of music. My impression on the basis of the jazz has always been portrayed with the African–American race. I think this was build up from the rhythm 'n' blues era and meaning according to the dictionary ("style of music that was invented by African American musicians in the early part of the twentieth century and has very strong rhythms and often involves improvisation"). While I was not familiar with Botti before the show, I had been asked on a date by a guy from church who was a fan of his work. After having dinner at Oceanaire, we arrived at the Hilbert Circle Theatre, where women were dressed from casual attire with black pants to full length ball gowns with mink fur coats, while the men wore suits or sports coats with dress pants. Botti played at the piannissmo dynamic level in "The Look of Love" but in some of his other songs he would begin in a soft piano and crescendo to a mezzo forte with some subito changes from mezzo piano to forte. While there was contrast due to the nature of jazz, most of the harmonies were consonant and the melodies were conjunct and pleasant to hear. There was never a moment in the performance where I felt the need for tension to be resolved, it was generally smooth. Overall, the wind instruments played included a bass clarinet, clarinets, an English horn, flutes, a piccolo, oboes, and bassoons. Antonio Vivaldi : The Most Influential Italian Composer The following program was chosen to provide a wide variety of trumpet literature ranging from major masterworks as well as transcriptions that translate well to the trumpet. A historical timeline was also considered when selecting the following pieces. Trumpet In The Old Trumpet Introduction The word trumpet in the Old Trumpet is translated from the Hebrew word Showphar (sho–far – Strong's Number: 7782) and also from the word Chatsotsrah (Khats–o–tser–aw – Strong's Number: 2689) Another word that implies the sounding of the trumpets is truw'ah (ter–oo–aw' – Strong's Number: 8643). It is an acclamation of joy or a battle–cry; especially clangor of trumpets, as an alarm, blow (–ing) (of, the) (trumpets), joy, jubilee, loud noise, rejoicing, shout (–ing), (high, joyful) sound (– ing). In the New Testament, the word trumpet is translated from the Greek Word Salpigx (sal'– pinx – Strong's Number: 4536) and is defined as trumpet or trump. The third is the Teruah and consists of nine staccato notes blown in succession. It is a plea for mercy and also a sound for alarm. A wave–like sound of alarm calling upon man to stand by the banner of God. Teruah in Hebrew means not only a certain unique sound. It also connotes "to break", denoting breaking something and/or causing damage. It is the note for bustling, speedy activity, the signal for breaking up, for striking tents and breaking up camp. Within the Biblical texts, the word teruah has wide and diverse applications. On the one hand, it is the term used to define a verbal shout (e.g., 1 Samuel 4:5) and in particular the high pitched, warbling battle cry that is still heard today in the center East (e.g., Job 39:24, 25). It was also the sound associated with war and is often times translated as the alarm in English translations. The underlying etymology of the word teruah in relation to the shofar or the two silver trumpets of the priests appears to be its apparent mimicking of the verbal shout of war. The teruah was also the call sounded by the two silver trumpets that signaled the breaking of camp for the Israelites in the desert (e.g., Numbers 10:5) and the term used for a rapid, oscillating cymbal pattern (e.g., Psalm 150:5). • 20. Thad Jones Summary HISTORICAL AND REHEARSAL NOTES This is one of Thad Jones' most iconic arrangements. Don't Git Sassy recalls the energetic, hand– clapping tradition of a church camp meeting, and the energy level stays strong throughout. This new edition of Thad's work is taken directly from the original ink parts Thad handed out to the band in 1967, and from Thad's original pencil score now housed in the Thad Jones Archive at William Paterson University, where Thad served as Founding Director of Jazz Studies. The key to this arrangement is its rhythmic style – a hard–driving shuffle. In a shuffle, a constant snare pattern is in tandem with the ride cymbal, all with a very tight "skip beat" played close to each upcoming downbeat. The sax and brass figures are tight, always playing their upbeats to lock in with the ride cymbal/snare skip beat. A great description of this time concept comes from the legendary Basie alumnus Frank Wess, who once said, "That accent is not on the upbeat of four, it's just before one!" As with many Thad Jones arrangements, a number of key stylistic elements are not printed on the original chart. The rehearsal comments below are taken from recorded performances of the original recording by the Thad Jones–Mel Lewis Orchestra, and from more recent Vanguard Jazz Orchestra recordings. This arrangement can be performed at the deepest level when band members are hearing these great recordings in their minds as they play. – The opening piano solo at Letter A is shown as ... The rhythm was not existent as well. It was more of a free flowing song. This song had a very quiet dynamic. It sounded very romantic like something out of a movie. The tempo of the song was very slow and mild but the trumpet was going very fast. The cello and the drums had a portion of the song where they fed off each other's energy and the trumpet was doing its own thing. The last song on the set list was called "Talk About It". The texture was very thick because all the instruments were playing over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. Trumpet Coursework "Explore the way that Kay portrays family relationships in Trumpet. In what way does this theme relate to the struggle for identity?" Joss Moody the protagonist of Jackie Kay's novel Trumpet lived in a world full of contrasts – internally Josephine but to all who knew him the famous trumpet player Joss. Having to deal with so much contrast so close to home can make a person wonder who is right and what to believe leaving them struggling to figure out who they are amongst it all. Being that the novel has a 70 year time span starting in 1927; the reader has the chance to experience society at different points in Joss' life and we can infer what the norm and day to day life would have been for Josephine. "Whatever" is a dismissive word often used by a mother who having grown tired of repeating the same thing over and over, has given in and has ultimately stopped caring. Only once, they overcome this barrier, are Colman and Millie able to grieve together. Following this is the relationship between Edith and her husband. Though we never hear from her husband, we learn about him through Edith. Edith is an elderly white lady who has been widowed for a long time. Her husband was a black man who had come from Africa to Scotland on a boat. He came over as a young man at the 'turn of the century.' At this time, racism was still very prominent and so interracial couples were virtually non–existent. Edith says that people were shocked that she was "going out with, no, married to, a black man." A black man in a 'white' country at the beginning of the 20th century was almost certain to encounter racism and inequality. Like Joss, Edith's husband was lucky enough to meet and marry someone who accepted him for who he was as a person. This total acceptance and love for a man who society at the time said she should discard and look down on as beneath her gives promise that had she of been told, she would have been accepting of Joss' choice to become a man in the best embodiment that he could achieve as Edith has been portrayed as a non–judgemental, un–conforming and loving character. • 32. Experiencing the Trumpet Essay He who is a true trumpeter ... can both sound across a great distance out in the open air, and also moderate with a pleasing voice in the princely chamber when the occasion arises' –The Gentleman's Journal of January 1692 The trumpet is an aerophone, and it produces sound by passing a airstream "through the player's vibrating lips, so gaining intermittent access to the air column which is to be made to vibrate" (14, par. 1). Present–day trumpets are made of brass, and can play a very wide range of registers through the use of the instrument's valves or the musician's 'lipping' technique to modulate the pitch of the trumpet. According to Bo Lawergren, the trumpet was originally used to mask and intensify the human voice (42). However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The ancestor to the modern trumpet is the Roman tuba, a long metal trumpet with a wide 'J'–shaped end. The Roman tube was played with a bone mouthpiece, and was used for military signalling (14, par. 8). Despite the atrocities committed during the third crusade from 1189–1192, useful methods of artistic metalworking were reverse–engineered from Muslim prototypes. These methods, along with the recent discovery of many copper and silver mines in Germany, and "development of water–powered rolling mills and forge hammers" (13, 350) allowed the construction of high quality brass and silver trumpets which produced their familiar "loud and bright sonority" (13, 350). The buisine, sometimes called the herald's trumpet, was created using the new metalworking technologies described above. The buisine was a straight trumpet at 150cm in length with a belled flare at the end (7, 26). Peter Downey explains that in it's early life, the buisine was used for signaling military commands. Downey states that the buisine was not seen in a music performance until the Ars Nova period when it "began to find a place in the performance of dance music at the courts" (26). In this setting, the buisine would usually provide accompaniment as a bass drone for a shawm, or the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Undeterred: A Concert Report Each time I set my embouchure on my mouthpiece, I create a mass–spring system with my lips. They oscillate, providing an air current. As my lips transition through a series of motions and contort to control the tension, I scale through a large range of pitches. I produce multiple series of resonance as my trombone resonates, each one creating a different standing wave from the last. I change the frequency of the vibration of my lips, increasing it in order to reach a higher note. I try to sneak in a G above the staff at pianissimo, but clip. Undeterred, I attempt to play a little louder, providing a velocity of air sufficient enough to allow me to reach it. I masterfully move the slide, manipulating the complex closed pipe so that it will resonate at the frequencies I desire. I make sure to achieve a mix of accuracy and speed in order to play the music at the tempo I want and also be in harmony with the rest of the band. Each note has a deliberate and careful style, crafted to share the emotion I feel with the audience. Having played the trombone for eight years, I have always had a fascination for how instruments have worked. Why does a larger instrument produce a generally lower pitch? • 34. The Cornet: The Evolution Of The Cornet Looking at both instruments side by side, there are minute differences in their construction. However, the cornet did not start out looking like a shorter trumpet. In fact, in the 1800's, the cornet looked something like a curly "q" made out of miscellaneous metal. Noted for its warmer, softer, and rounder sound, the cornet has evolved since the early 19th century. Evolution of the Cornet The late 18th century involved a lot of modifications to earlier models of horns. Beginning with the bullhorn and into the development of the bugle in 1810, instrument materials shifted from horn to wood, to eventually copper, silver, and brass. • 35. Dizzy Gelespie (John Birks Gillespie) Essay The people of today, raised by the sounds of The Beatles and Pearl Jam have forgotten all about the musicians that paved the way for these artists, and the musical styles that evolved into rock and roll, rhythm and blues and rap or hip hop. Unfortunately the music that once dominated the night clubs, restaurants, and radio stations is now heard only in elevators or when we go to a grandparents house to visit. What is left of jazz are small portions of the music that people take and sample with in a new song. Jazz and its historical figures have mistreated and forgotten by today's society. One of the figure most forgotten is John Birks Gillespie, known to the jazz world as "Dizzy" Gillespie. "Dizzy" Gillespie was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gillespie admired the style and work of Roy Elridge so much that he started to sound like Elridge. Some time later Gillespie was hired in a band because he played with Elridge=s style so well. In his studies he would transcribe or learn the notes and phrases that Elridge would play during his solos (Powis, 58). Although to become a Jazz musician, Gilllespie did not idolize only jazz musicians, he also greatly enjoyed listening to and examining the styles of musicians like Stravinsky, a virtuoso composer of the classic period, and Maurice Ravel another composer, famous for works like "Bolero", a piece that consisted of a phrase that repeated over and over, each time getting louder and thicker (Powis, 58). Dizzy unfortunately was to be later recognized by many for his many distinguishable trademarks instead of the musical proficiency he worked so hard for. He was famous for his sense of humor. At a performance Dizzy asked the audience if he could introduce the band. The audience replied swiftly "yes". He than began introducing the saxophone player to the drummer and the trumpet player to the trombonist and so forth (Wastrous, January 17). He also expressed his incredible humor within his music as well. In his own interpretation of the spiritual, "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," Gillespie develops the song into "Swing low Sweet Cadillac." • 36. Jupiter Xo Research Paper Louis Daniel Armstrong is known as one of the greatest trumpet players in history, and his talent came from long hours of practicing and playing with the right horn. There are beginner and professional horns that are sold in various places. However, a professional trumpet can give a better tone compared to a beginner trumpet. As of right now I am looking into two professional horn brands, Bach and Jupiter XO. Bach horns are known for having excellent quality and tone, and Jupiter horns are known for having nice quality and much less expensive than others. Although the Jupiter XO trumpet is not as efficient as a bach horn, it will still give me a better deal and enough room to improve as a trumpet player. "(They go for about $1300–1400 ... You can even opt for a vertical stop on the third valve tuning slide instead of the standard horizontal. In addition to these options, the horns come with both rounded or elliptical main slides and two sets of valve springs of differing strengths come as standard equipment. These add two more ways you can alter the instrument to suit your preferences on top of the built–in options. For a first professional series, Jupiter has given the player a wealth of choices." "My instrument is a 180 model Stradivarius that I acquired new in '72. It is the most popular Bach model, with a silver plate finish, ML bore, and a #37 bell. While not of Mount Vernon vintage, it is old enough to make a comparison with its current counterpart interesting and informative. It is a high–mileage horn, but has been lovingly (some say obsessively) cared for. It still plays beautifully and sounds wonderful. It was going to be a hard horn to beat, especially with only me as judge and jury." These two quotes give me an insight of the quality of the two trumpets. The C trumpet has a bright and penetrating sound, while the Bb trumpet has a mellow, relaxed sound. The more commonly used instrument is the Bb trumpet, but all professional trumpet players play the C trumpet as well. Changing between instruments poses nominal problems since the basic finger combinations stay the same. Timbre The C trumpet has a brighter sound and is more agile than the Bb trumpet. The Bb trumpet, characterized by its mellow sound, provides a darker pitch. Fanfares more commonly use Bb trumpets, while slow lyrical passages fit the C trumpet.
