Influencers are the embers of the community that have been filtered to the top because they are owning their voice and personal brand. So what can you learn from them - What are online influencers doing to win!
1. They know their personal brand inside and out and are not afraid to share it (tell your message in all the content you share online – write blogs, share content on twitter, guest blog on industry blogs, comment on industry blogs, publish videos on youtube/vine/instagram)
2. Connect (this has two sides – online and in person. Ensure you connect with the leaders in your space and reach out to them online, connect on Linkedin, identify twitter chats where you can bring value and become part of the community.
3. Connect Offline - Social Media is not just about the online world but the magic really happens when you take the conversations offline, attend industry events and connect with people you have met online or reach out to new people you have never met. Having an opportunity to meet in person will strengthen the relationship you will have online from event to event.)
4. Bring Value to the table (so now you have a personal brand and made connections online and from the events you have attended but what do you do now? You need to bring value to those relationships, don’t ask for something first you need to offer something to the people who connect with – help them promote their brand, share your knowledge for free, be generous with your time. This can be the time heavy part but is the most important if you want to make a strong foundation for your brand and the reputation you have within the online community. Remember that social media relationships are not different in real life, in both cases you are dealing with people and not just a tweet, facebook posts, blog comment. Remembering that will ensure you have strong online relationships that will help you grow your personal brand.
5. Connect with other influencers – smart people hangout with other smart people. This is what is so great about the online community – everyone has access to knowledge and to each other. Not many people are out of reach these days. So if you are looking to be a leader in your field you should reach out to the ones that already are. You have already been listening to their message online why not take the leap and reach out?
You’ll often notice that one influencer will write for, tweet about, or highlight another online influencer.
Surround yourself with influencers. Share their content. Ask them insightful questions. See if they’ll let you interview them for your blog, newsletter, YouTube Channel, etc..
In other words, be ACTIVELY looking to buddy up with, learn from, and emulate what online influencers in your industry are doing.
Remember just like any relationship it doesn’t happen over night, you need to be active in the online communities, stay true to your brand, your voice and work at bringing value to communities you participant in. But it is important you starting building relationship and the reach of your personal brand before you need or have an ask from your relationships. Take ht time to build them and offering them value. Giving value with no strings attached will bring value back to you in spades!
